Safe with the Lord.
Yes, he is now present with his Lord Your father was not only a
great preacher. He was a great man Our
church has prepared a place for you and your aunt to come and be taken care of
as long as you need
john harper was born on may twenty ninth eighteen seventy two in the quiet
village of houston renfrewshire scotland into a devout christian family from his
earliest days the truth of the gospel was woven into the fabric of his home
prayers at the table scripture read by lamplight and a deep reverence for the
saviour who had given his life for sinners
Mr. Harper, you have a son, a beautiful baby boy.
Father, he is a gift from you.
Thus we will dedicate him to you.
His name will be John.
Yes, John.
A good Bible name.
Running and playing through the yard of his family's modest home, Woodside
Cottage, the world was a place of endless wonder for young John.
Chickens to chase, puddles to splash.
This way!
This way!
Come look at the well. You can see way down to the ground at the bottom.
I think I can touch the water.
I gave him life once.
By God's grace, I gave it to him again today.
Aye, God himself watched over you, John, or surely you would have perished in
that well.
To those watching, it was rescue.
To his parents, a mercy.
Only later would it be understood as something else entirely.
Not just a life spared from death, but a life spared for purpose.
Father, will you... read a sermon. Aye, laddie.
This one's from Mr. Spurgeon.
Christ is not valued at all unless he is valued above all.
If he not be all to thee, he is nothing to thee.
Does he mean everything?
Aye, aye, laddie.
Nothing can be kept back.
Long before John Harper ever stood in a pulpit, he learned that Christ demands
all of a man with nothing.
Jesus told his followers, I am the good shepherd.
The good shepherd watches out for his flock.
As Jesus watches out for his flock, he also calls to his flock.
When you hear his voice, then simply respond to him and obey his gospel.
The only hope for this world is the gospel of Christ.
Some of the young men among you may have the opportunity to minister the gospel
of Christ when you are old enough.
If you feel that calling, then you should act on it.
On that day, at the tender age of 13, John heard that call and he responded.
It didn't make him extraordinary.
It simply made him willing.
Do not neglect so great a gift.
God has provided a way of salvation and forgiveness.
This gift can only be discovered through calling on Christ for forgiveness of
sins.
What does that pipsqueak have to say to me?
A lot of nonsense.
Jesus said, In the world ye shall have tribulation, but be of good cheer, I
have overcome the world.
Your God ever work fourteen hours in this mill, boy?
Or protect the hands of the wee ones that the boss has shuttling the beams?
God does care about you and your condition, and his promise of salvation
is sure.
And I am the King of England.
Slow down, Harper. The boss is not here, and we have plenty of time to load this
cart. I am doing this as unto the Lord.
Wish it was the Almighty that paid the wages around here instead of Gresham and
Sons.
John's hands may have been calloused from hard work, but his heart was
burdened for lost souls.
Stay close, my love. We'll get through this.
I'm so cold, Mama.
I know. It's taught to me.
It is going to be cold again tonight, and you will need this.
And this is a gift from Jesus to warm your stomach.
Thank you.
This means everything.
Stay warm.
Pray it, Mama.
You need this more than I do.
God bless you, sir.
Will you be cold?
I'll manage.
Mum, do you know him?
Of course, love.
He's an angel sent direct to us in these slums.
It was not the first time John gave up warmth and safety for someone else, and
it would not be the last.
Jesus said,
Not every door opens with ceremony.
Sometimes God opens a door quietly through simple, persevering faith.
John 3.16 For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that
whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
Young man, you have a gift, but gifts must be tended.
I have a proposal.
While Reverend Spurgeon and his associates have provided training and
mentoring for young men to bring spiritual awakening to our nation, I
don't want to see your spirit dimmed or your evangelistic zeal lowered with a
higher theological education.
England used to trust in God.
Now, in this age, the trust has turned to the wisdom and genius of man instead
of the abilities of God.
You'll work and study with the Baptist Pioneer Mission, with Reverend E.A.
Carter.
Practical work, hard streets, real people.
All right, gentlemen, that is enough for today. We will resume in the morning
after we gather for prayer.
There you go, a lovely warm broth for you. Thank you kindly, sir.
I have something for you.
Oh, sir, thank you.
May it bring you comfort.
Jesus said... Let the little children come to me, for the kingdom of God
belongs to such as these.
Reverend Carter?
Yes, John?
My time with Baptist Pioneer Mission has prepared me.
I believe I am ready to build God's church in Scotland.
Go with God's blessing, John.
With your giftedness, I expect God will use you greatly, whether in Glasgow or
London. So we make it our goal to please him, whether we are at home in the
body... or away from it.
2 Corinthians 5 verse 9 You are ready.
John was ready.
But those whom God calls, he does not place beyond harm.
He places them in his will.
Look at the state of the roof up there.
We need a place to gather, a place to worship the Lord together.
Reverend,
It will take a lot of work, and there are only a few of us.
There are so many poor people in this area of Govan.
Yes, and we will serve them here.
We shall call the church Paisley Road Baptist Mission.
It will be a church for the community.
John did not build a church for comfort.
He built it where need was loudest.
If thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine
heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
Jesus said, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No man cometh unto the Father
but by me.
John 15, 13.
Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.
Tomorrow is a holiday, reverend.
Would you like to join me and my friends at the beach?
Wonderful idea.
I haven't had a good hardy swim in months.
The salt air will do me good.
Aye, laddies, I am dressed and ready to swim.
Aye, it's a grand day.
Robert and I will get changed and be right there with you.
What a glorious day.
Care to walk along the beach with me? Certainly, my dear.
Help! Help me!
What is happening?
I think a reverse current's caught him.
He won't be able to get out of it.
I'm drowning!
Keep up. We're almost there.
I've got the ring. I've got the ring. He's slipping.
Pull him in. Use the rope.
Almost there.
Thank you, lads.
Well done, lads. Man, we've got you.
Take a deep breath yourself.
Thank you, I'm grateful.
This would not be the last time John was tested by water.
And the next time, more would be asked of him.
Pastor, we are so glad God saved you.
Aye, but he saved me at 13. This was but a brief resuscitation, like the one my
mother gave me as a wee child.
To quote the psalmists, he hides me in the shelter of his wings.
May the Lord make sure those wings are waterproof.
And I understand there is another young lady very happy about this.
Yes, Miss Bell and I are to announce our wedding soon.
Congratulations, Pastor.
Thank you.
John had been given much by then.
He did not know yet how much would be required of him.
I, John Harper, take you and Leckie Bell to be my wife.
to walk with you in faith and in truth, wherever God may place us.
I, Anne Leckie Bell, take you, John Harper, to be my husband, to share your
calling and to stand with you in all that is asked of us.
Then may God bless what you have promised this day.
Earthly happiness was never denied to John.
It was simply never promised to last.
Thank you for coming, Doctor.
My wife, she's having a time of it.
Come in.
How long has the labour been?
Since before nightfall and the consumption has her breathing worsened.
Yes, sir Then we must move quickly Childbirth alone is dangerous enough,
but with tuberculosis her strength will not hold long May the Lord preserve her
doctor
Reverend Harper, meet Annie Jessie Harper.
And my wife?
The labour has ended, but the consumption has taken its toll.
We shall have to see.
You should go home and get some rest, Jessie.
We'll be all right.
She's my sister.
And this is my niece.
I'm here as long as you need me.
I'm so sorry, John.
She is with the Lord now.
This child is not alone, and neither are you.
I will help with her.
That's what Anne would want.
John had been entrusted with a life, and with the knowledge of how briefly such
gifts are held.
Bring her down slow.
Coming down steady.
Clear the way below.
The design is sound.
Stronger than anything we've built.
Her subdivision will keep her afloat in conditions that would doom lesser ships.
That is precisely what the public expects of her.
Complete safety.
She meets every regulation.
Exceeds several.
The lifeboats provided are more than the law requires, but they are fewer than
the number she could carry.
The law assumes these ships will never need them at all, for, as you say, she's
stronger than anything built. The law assumes many things, Mr. Ismay, but does
not factor in all contingencies.
White Star sells confidence, Mr. Andrews, not alarms.
We want our passengers to experience the finest amenities possible, and more
boats would obstruct the views on the promenade deck.
And her watertight compartments will make her practically unsinkable, as they
say. This ship will be judged by her crossings, by her comfort, her
steadiness, her reliability, her success.
Not by contingencies no one expects.
Then she will be built exactly as approved.
she will be the finest ship afloat
mr
andrews what a glorious start
The keel plate is being laid, and what a mighty one it is.
Thank you, Mr. O'Sullivan, for the update.
They're calling this the unsinkable ship.
There is no such thing.
Reverend Harper, we are pleased that you have accepted our invitation to pastor
our church.
What you did there in Govan in growing that church from a meagre 25 people to a
mighty 500 has become well known.
God grows his church.
He just looks for willing vessels.
From your preaching, we can tell you are a willing vessel.
A gifted one at that.
My mission is unchanged.
Prayer, revival, and preaching the gospel continues to drive my heart.
Wherever God sends me to preach the gospel, I will go.
Is there anything further we can do to help you get settled?
No, thank you. My sister-in-law, Jessie Leach, has moved into our home and helps
with my little nana.
She has everything well sorted.
Easy, easy.
Let her settle on the blocks.
Oh, steady.
All right, Eve, let her down now.
Steady as she goes.
Tighten that valve. We are losing pressure.
Secure on level three, mister. Hold fast.
It's on my count. Ready?
One, two.
Rounding is perfect on the main condenser. Yes, and the tuning coil
alignment needs final calibration against the blueprint, sir. Let's check
the calibration against the blueprint.
Steady. She's in position. Hold fast.
Right,
push it hard.
Steady. Now, bring her down slow. Stuck on the tile. Push harder, lads.
We need to secure this section before the next cabin goes up.
Mr. Andrews, your design is magnificent.
The Great Pyramid has nothing on you and this vessel. I can only hope we are not
sending gilded eggshells out to sea.
Look at her. She exceeds the imagination before she even reaches the water.
But... no christening?
No bottle here.
White Star relies on engineering, not ancient rituals.
No blessing, no prayer.
Only iron, gravity, and confidence.
What do you have there, John?
A letter.
An invitation from Moody Church in Chicago.
It is one of the greatest churches in America and they want me to come speak.
Nana and I will be fine while you are gone.
No, I would like you both to accompany me.
I can't be away from my daughter for that long.
Yes, she needs you and she needs a woman's touch to look after her.
It will be nice to visit America.
I will telegram Moody Church then.
and accept.
Would you look at this? A floating hotel, a town at sea.
I have never seen the likes of it. I've heard it even has a swimming pool on it,
as well as Turkish baths. Brilliant.
Let's go inside and see what they have to say about it.
You don't want to miss your chance to sail the maiden voyage of the Titanic.
Among all the great ships, it is the greatest ship ever built.
It is now the largest man-made movable object in the world.
It is unsinkable.
God himself couldn't sink this ship.
I wouldn't step foot on it. We couldn't afford to anyway on our foundry wages.
Even if we could, who would want to be packed like sheep in steerage?
But my dear, this is a once in a lifetime opportunity, a chance to be a
part of something that will go down in history.
That is my exact fear.
Going down.
The ship is an engineering marvel. It is completely safe, with a wireless system
to communicate with land and sea.
They are flying in the face of God, saying that even he could not sink it.
Dear, that is just advertising bravado.
This will be one of the most memorable times the Hart family will ever have.
We will be talking about it for years to come.
Mr. and Mrs. Astor, welcome aboard.
Thank you.
John, this is as wonderful and as exciting as seeing the pyramids. My
dear, there is much more excitement ahead.
No expense will be spared for my precious wife and the new child we have
on the way.
Pastor, you will be missed.
Our loss for these few weeks will be Moody Church's gain. Just remember to
hold me up in prayer, that I will be a faithful witness for him.
I am afraid to go all the way to the top of the ship. It is too high.
Don't worry, son.
Only the rich passengers will be on the upper decks.
We will be kept in the lower decks, F and G.
They're afraid of disease.
We'll be examined when we reach America.
I can't believe we're actually leaving.
Don't look back.
Just keep moving forward.
A very smooth departure, Mr Murdoch. Yes, Captain.
The embarkation went exactly as planned.
We'll proceed to Cherbourg, then on to Queenstown to take on the remaining
passengers. After that, we'll make our crossing to America.
They're expecting us.
Yes, sir.
Your tea, madam. Thank you.
I must say, the accommodations are far grander than I anticipated for the
second class. Absolutely.
And the air up here is simply invigorating, isn't it?
Calm and clear, Captain. A perfect day for sailing.
Yes, it is, Officer Murdoch.
I suppose I'd better go down and hobnob with the guests.
For some reason, they like to dine with the Captain.
Is that why they call you the Millionaire's Captain?
Maybe so.
Maybe so.
Stay a steady course.
I believe dinner is served promptly at eight.
I am quite looking forward to it. I hear the orchestra is superb this evening.
It's simply magnificent, isn't it? Absolutely.
They say she's unsinkable.
Let's hope they are right.
This lamb is exquisite, isn't it? Absolutely.
The service has been impeccable tonight.
Eat up. Thank you kindly, sir.
It's simple, but it warms the belly. Aye, that it does.
We'll need our strength for the journey ahead.
Could you pass the bread down this way, please?
It feels like a floating hotel.
Better. Nothing here to remind us of land.
For a brief time, joy found its way into every corner of the ship.
At least a good night for spotting bergs, though it would be nice to have
the field glasses.
They said they don't have the key to where they're kept.
Nice night, but still every bit of 30 degrees.
I'm ready for the shift change.
You'll get no argument from me there.
In the morning hours, the first warning.
Ice reported ahead from the Coronia.
Take it to the bridge.
Right away.
Ice warning from the Coronia, sir. Thank you.
Inform the officers.
We'll keep a sharp lookout.
Yes, Captain.
Later in the day, more warnings began to arrive.
Another message from the wireless room, sir, from the RMS Baltic. Heavy ice
reported. Thank you. Post it.
From the America.
Ice again.
We'll pass it on.
What kind of work do you do?
I pastor a church in London.
Religion, huh?
I don't have time for religious things.
It might be well to pay as much attention to spiritual things as to your
business, sir.
Your business is temporal, but your soul is eternal.
The Bible says our lives are like a wisp of smoke that quickly disappear.
I'm not really concerned about that sort of talk.
I have worked very hard to make a successful business, and now I intend to
relax and enjoy the good things of life, such as this voyage.
Be careful, my friend.
Jesus told of a man who spoke like that, and God's response was to call him a
fool.
To say that his soul would be required of him that very night.
And he warned against acquiring things for oneself.
Rather than being rich toward God, the Bible is gibberish.
I decided a long time ago to live life on my own terms.
It is appointed once for man to die, then face judgment.
I urge you to prepare for that.
Ready for our billiards game?
Yes, I am. Shall we? Yes.
Father, show him mercy and help him not to trample on your grace.
Who was that chap?
Some religious zealot.
Did you learn anything from him?
Learn that I don't want it.
The 1907 vintage, madam.
Oh, absolutely splendid.
To the success of the voyage.
Here, here.
That ice report earlier. Anything further?
No change, Mr. Ismay. We're watching it.
We'll keep our course for now.
The officers are aware.
From the Mesaba.
Heavy pack ice.
Large bergs.
Get word to the Titanic and other ships.
We have spotted Major Berg's. Right away, sir. The Californian had stopped
for the night.
One last ice warning was sent into the dark.
The reply was brief and technical, but routine.
Spoken under the pressure of a wireless room, busy with passenger traffic to the
land station at Cape Race.
Iceberg! Right ahead!
Hard as starboard, full as stern.
What was that noise?
What was that?
Perhaps we lost a propeller.
The sister ship, the Olympic, had the same problem.
She struck ice, sir.
Yes. I've sent Andrews to inspect. Close the watertight doors.
Move! Get through!
It's floating! Hurry!
Mr. Andrews, what's the status?
The forepeak is flooded.
Holds one and two are taking water.
Euler room six is gone.
And five?
Five is taking on water.
How many compartments?
Five.
She was built to remain afloat with four.
Yes. Can she float?
No. She will sink.
How long?
An hour and a half.
Perhaps two.
Very well.
We must prepare the boats.
Mr Murdoch?
Yes, Captain.
Have the boats cleared away and tell the Marconi room to send the distress.
Sir.
The nearest ship that night was the Californian, but her wireless operator
had gone to bed minutes before the collision.
When the distress calls began, there was no one listening.
On her bridge, officers saw rockets flare against the cold Atlantic sky.
They did not understand what they meant.
Farther away, other ships heard the call. The Frankfurt, the Mount Temple,
the Baltic.
they answered but they were too distant too hemmed in by ice too late
fifty-eight miles away the carpathia turned at once and drove hard through
the frozen sea but the nearest ship slept in silence
What a marvellous evening.
I haven't heard such a performance in years.
Ladies and gentlemen, if you would please dress warmly and come up on deck.
This is quite unnecessary, isn't it?
Only a precaution, madam.
Sir and madam, if you would please come up on deck. My wife isn't properly
attired. There may be time later, sir. Please, just bring a coat.
Lifeboat's uncovered.
Orders are women and children first.
Ladies and gentlemen, up to the boat deck, please.
What has happened?
Come, you need to bring Nana topside. I need to get you to the lifeboats.
Boiler room six is gone.
Five's taking water.
How long can we keep her running?
The pots are going full.
They won't keep ahead of it.
We'll keep steam on her as long as we can.
Everyone stay calm.
There's no danger.
Then what is that?
Please wait. We don't want to panic and I'm waiting for orders.
From who?
No one is coming.
Women and children, this way, please. Step carefully.
Hand the infant over. Thank you.
Next group to the rail.
Women and children only, Mr. Astor.
I'll meet up with you later.
Will you be all right? Of course.
Daddy!
You stay with your mother.
Hold her hand.
Be a good girl.
Come on.
Both of you into the boats.
I will join later after this resolves itself or we are rescued.
But sure, they would take you onto a lifeboat. You are a pastor. We need you.
Women and children, only Jesse. Please just take Nana now. God will be with me.
I will meet you at the next port.
Lower away together. The first lifeboat launched with only 28 people on board
out of a maximum capacity of 65.
Far below, in the forward third class sections,
was setting in water had already flooded the mail room and was creeping through
the lowest compartments in some forward corridors cold sea water began seeping
along the floor steerage families were pressed closely together along the
narrow corridors and stairwells confusion prevailed how many decks is it
above the ship still appeared calm and illuminated but below the atlantic
had begun its slow advance the water is coming in we must get to the
deck keep moving don't look back we have to get to the deck
turn the valve man turn it it's jam solid the illusion of safety
was beginning to fade
put on your life jackets in first and second class corridors the language of
precaution had given way to urgency maintain order stewards who had knocked
gently minutes before were now returning with firmer insistence life belts were
no longer suggestions there aren't nearly enough lifeboats are there
passengers who had lingered in warm lounges or stepped out in evening coats
now hesitated at the rail looking down into lifeboats suspended over a black
and silent sea the ship still seemed steady beneath their feet the lights
still burned yet something had shifted everyone to the boat deck please the
calm was thinning surely this is just a precaution steady pace everyone we must
reach the deck and for the first time unease began to ripple through the decks
does the ship seem lower forward to you
probably just adjusting the ballast.
John Harper, however, was concerned not for the ship, but for the souls aboard
her.
Please, Lord, give me souls for your sake.
Give me the strength to do thy will.
The uneasy calm was beginning to fracture, as what had been caution now
felt like danger.
Maintain order!
Move to the boat deck!
Passengers, who had obeyed quietly only minutes before, now looked from face to
face, searching for answers no one seemed willing to give.
The realisation spread in whispers first, then in anxious voices.
There were not enough boats.
Women, children and the unsaved to the lifeboats.
Pastor, unsaved? What do you mean? The ship is sinking, friend.
Ah. If you will confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your
heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved
and receive the gift of eternal life.
God be with you.
The discipline that had held the decks together began to strain.
Proceed to the lifeboats in an orderly fashion. Polite patience gave way to
urgency, and urgency to fear.
In the dim corridors below, and along the railings above, the oldest instinct
of all began to surface.
The instinct to survive.
The next shot will be in the head for the next man who tries to jump on. It's
mine! Give it here!
No, we need it! While the first lifeboat had launched with too few aboard... Hold
her steady, men.
Lifeboat 11...
was overloaded with seventy passengers our father who art in heaven
hallowed be thy name how can the sea look so
beautiful tonight
Friend, are you saved?
Saved?
No, I cannot say that I am, and now it's too late.
Sir? What are you doing?
Here.
You need it more than I.
It's never too late.
But believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you shall be saved.
Lord Jesus.
Have mercy on this man.
Open his heart to believe in you and grant him the gift of eternal life.
Trust him.
As the panic spread and the final moments approached, Run!
Help us!
most fought desperately to live. Give it here, you fool!
Mommy! Mommy!
Mommy! Where are you?
But John Harper spent those same moments pleading with men, to prepare for
eternity believe on the lord jesus christ and thou shalt be saved
Dear God, have mercy on us.
Where chaos had roared only moments before, there was now a terrible calm.
The sea lay quiet.
Only the cold remained, and the scattered remnants of what had been.
Bebeth, believe in Christ.
He can and will save you.
All of you!
Christ died for your sins.
Ask for his forgiveness.
Help! Help me!
Is anyone there?
Please help us!
We have got to go back and save some.
We cannot.
They will overwhelm our boat and we'll all die.
My husband and son are out there, dying.
Only one lifeboat came back to the scene to attempt to rescue survivors.
In the early morning hours, the Carpathia arrived on the scene and began
rescuing survivors.
Give me your hand. Easy now.
Thank you. Thank you so much.
Here you are, miss.
Careful, it's hot.
Bless you, sir. Thank you.
The evening of April 18th, the Carpathia arrived in New York, bearing the
survivors of the Titanic.
Of the 2,200 on board the Titanic, over 1,500 people
perished. 700 to 706 passengers and crew survived.
When I was alone on a spa that awful night, John Harper came to me in the
water, holding to a piece of debris.
Oh, friend, are you saved?
No, I don't think I am.
If you believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, then you will be saved.
He was weak and nearing death.
But again...
He pleaded with me.
Have you asked Christ to save you?
I don't know how.
Call to him now.
Ask him and he will hear you.
Just believe and you will be saved.
Then he slipped beneath the water.
So alone in the dark with two miles of ocean below me, I
cried out to Christ to save me.
I am the last convert.
Of the approximately 706 survivors of the Titanic disaster, survival
rate was greatest among the first class passengers.
where better access to the boat deck and early awareness of the evacuation
allowed around 62% of the passengers to survive.
Second-class passengers had some barriers to boat access and were
notified of the evacuation more slowly.
Approximately 41% of second-class passengers survived.
Third-class steerage passengers were last to be notified, faced complex
passageways and delayed access to lifeboats.
Many were immigrants and struggled with language barriers.
Around 25% of steerage passengers survived.
The fewest amount of survivors were from the crew at around 24%.
I can't bear it, the thought of that ship.
It's all right, we'll be together.
I'm so scared. I know, we'll be brave together.
Eva Hart was seven years old when her family sailed on the Titanic.
she became one of the most outspoken of the survivors her mother had a strong
