Our mighty winds,

and my fellow Canadian, Catherine O'Hara.

She made us laugh until we cried.

Annie Hall, the Godfather, Reds.

And that's just her first decade

for over 50 years,
luminous on screen and indelible in life.

Believe me when I say
there isn't an actress of my generation

who was not inspired by and enthralled
with her absolute singularity.

She wore so many hats,

literally

and figuratively.

Actress, artist, author, activist.

But no hat more important to her
than being a mother to her two children.

She meant so much to so many of us.

I remember she used to sing this old Girl
Scout song on set,

which is just so her

make new friends,
but keep the old one in silver

and the other is called A circle is round.

It has no end.

That's how long I'll be your friend.

And so to our friend Diane Keaton,

celebrating a life in silver and gold,

a legend with no end

attached,

The audience was there waiting for it.

And you get caught up
in a heat of the moment and you just,

you know, you want to give them anything
they want and,

oh, you think

if a man sincerely depends
on what they've done wrong,

they might get to go back to the time
that was happiest for him.

It's just that,

again, often

and sometimes things may
or may not be true,

but the things I've managed
to believe in the most.

But people are basically good.

Honor,

courage and virtue in everything.

But I just think of myself

thinking, you know,
what would you even problem?

The answer is yes,
that I know exactly where

I'm supposed to be.

After I wrote

the first script of the way where

I could only imagine one man

in the role of Hubble.

And that was Robert Redford.

But he turned it down
because he said character

had no backbone.

He doesn't stand for anything.

And he was right.

So many drafts later,

Bob finally agreed to do it.

He was a brilliant, subtle actor,

and we had a wonderful time
playing off each other

because we never quite knew what the other
one was going to do and see.

And I'm thrilled that the way we were
is now

considered a classic love story.

But it's also about a dark time
in our history.

The late forties and early fifties

when people were informing on each other

and subject to loyalty oaths.

Now Bob had real backbone

on off the screen.

He spoke up to defend

freedom of the press,
protect the environment,

and encouraged new voices
at his Sundance Institute,

and some of whom

some of whom

are up for Oscars tonight,
which is so great.

He was

he was thoughtful.

And bold.

I call him the intellectual cowboy

who blazed his own trail

and won the Academy Award
for best director.

And I miss him now more than ever.

Even though he loved teasing me,

he called me.

He called me Babs.

And I said, Bob, you know,
do I look like a bad brother?

Babs? You know?

But the way he said it made me laugh.

And many years later, we were

we were chatting on the phone
about the usual politics

or modern Johnny, our favorite.

And as we were hanging up, he said, Babs,

I love you dearly

and I always will.

And in the last note I ever wrote to Bob,

And I signed it.

So it's laughter.
