Law said that Belania had an issue with her body language,

which is being criticized.

When you are being critiqued, your body language gets a little nasty.

Well, as you know, in fashion, one day you're in, and the next day you're out.

What started out as 12 designers is now down to the dirty half dozen.

For this next challenge, it's all about Western flair.

Not only is pop culture obsessed with all things country,

from Yellowstone to the Queen B herself, Cowboy Carter,

but runways across the world are saddling up

to fresh takes on classic country western styles, fabrication, and design.

So for this next challenge, you will be tapping into the type guys

and creating a look that is your take on Western chic.

[Jesus] Western is one of the challenges

that Antonio and I are so excited to have in the competition.

I mean, I basically live with a cowboy.

I love my cowboy hat. I love my cowboy boots.

His closet, it's literally all western.

Chaps, like leather jackets. This could be my win.

You have sunrise to sunset to complete your look.

Half of us are gone

and now another one-day challenge is gonna decide the final five.

[sighs] The anxiety levels are ramping up like… [groaning]

[Christian] All right, good luck, designers.

Christian, should we mosey?

-[Ethan] Thanks, divas. -Mwah!

[Christian] Oh, God, this place.

I'd love, like, a burgundy leather.

I know that a lot of designers are going to the leather section

because, yes, it's a western chic fashion challenge,

and to me, why would I go there if all of you are already going there.

Next.

You're doing… How is this Western?

-You'll see. -[Jesus] Oh.

[Veejay] Silent killer.

Like, I just don't understand how vinyl can be Western.

[Antonio] This way, this way, this way, this way.

This week, the pressure is on. I have to win a challenge.

What am I going to do?

So far in the competition, I've used a lot of color, I've used a lot of print,

and I'm like, you know what, I'm gonna shock everyone and I'm gonna do white.

I can do a mini scarf with fringe. I can do my jacket crop with fringe.

[in Spanish] How much is this one?

[in English] It was, like, calling me. I was like… [vocalizing] Oh.

Okay, this is cool.

[Yuchen] I don't know too much about Western culture.

[Producer] Do you know what a lasso is?

Lasso? No.

This looks like Christmas. Do not get this.

[Jesus] This challenge is very personal for me

because Antonio and I are from Northern Mexico.

When I was three, I remember coming into America in our cowboy boots.

So for this look,

I really wanna lean into a Western indigenous vibe.

It's in my roots and it's in my DNA.

And that's why I need to find the perfect fabric because I have to deliver.

[contestants chatter]

-[Jesus] I love my fabric. -Your fabric loves you. [laughs]

[Jesus] Guys, I'm putting the interfacing by the muslin okay?

Getting into the workroom, I automatically just go straight to cutting my fabric

because I really wanna figure out what I'm gonna make for under this coat now.

I got this beautiful leather, but I don't have much of it.

So I have to be really careful in how I use this leather.

And at this point, I have to make something so innovative

and amazing to be able to win this challenge.

-[Jesus] Oh. -[bleep]

Clearly, you can't interface on leather.

-[Belania] Oh. -[bleeping]

I just [bleep] up my fabric.

[Antonio] It burned it.

[Belania] Stop! Stop.

Oh, no. Like, I don't know what to do. I'm freaking out. I have no backup.

I haven't really, like, messed up throughout this whole competition

and then this happens to me.

I cannot believe I just did this.

He interfaced almost all his fabrics for some reason,

but leather already has a body, so why would you interface a leather?

The burning on Jesus's leather is giving kind of an armpit kind of energy.

Okay, I'm gonna be honest with you, it looks like pit stains.

Because of the coloring. Are you gonna treat it of some sort?

At this point, there's nothing I can do. I just have to make it work.

[Ethan] I'm doing these front panels. I am making an eveningwear leather gown.

[Christian] She literally is gonna look like a python.

I love like a little snake in the grass. I grew up on a farm and snakes and--

I grew up on country western films and I literally grew up on a farm,

and these films just surround themselves with powerful female energy,

and I'm trying to pull that energy into my clothes.

I'm making a two-piece denim, western-inspired set

[Belania] It's not. I promise it's not. It's gonna look totally different.

Okay. All right. All right. Are you feeling good? You won the last challenge.

I feel like a disciplined child though.

What did Law say?

My body language is disrespectful when I'm getting a critique,

so I have to be sharp.

After getting called out about my attitude last week,

it's very, very important to me to show the judges that I am listening.

I need to leave it in the workroom and not bring it on stage.

-[Christian] We're fringing? -[Veejay] Yeah.

[Christian] We're gonna fringe this whole thing?

[Veejay] For this challenge,

I want it to be a little unexpected, but still western chic.

Yeah. Yes.

[Veejay] I am making a futuristic vinyl fringe dress.

How are you gonna do this?

Mmm. That's a good question.

I'm gonna do a leather jacket crop.

It's gonna have a mini skirt that I'm gonna fringe.

Don't you think that it's, like, kind of a little bit done.

[Antonio] He's right. It's just white leather jacket, a white leather skirt.

That's why I want the details to really stand out.

I'm the only one that hasn't had a win.

I've been in the top, but this close to winning.

And I know that the techniques that I have in my brain

could really take this look to the next level and win this challenge.

What did you do?

[Jesus] So, it was a mistake.

Uh, I tried to interface my leather and it burned.

I think maybe the burning technique is kind of interesting.

Maybe you do more to the skirt.

[Yuchen] So, I'm making this dress. I wanted to make it all sequence

and I'm gonna have like, you know, a little bit dripping on here.

I can buy this at the mall right now.

I just wanted to take this shining part of Western, like, you know, culture.

I get it. Like a performance-esque. Like Dolly Parton. Do you know who that is?

so I'm doing something different. I'm making a dress.

I've made my decision. I just hope I have enough time.

[Yuchen] But I will make something on the dress though.

-I know you've been really close. -How many times?

I've been close two times. I was on the top twice.

[Antonio] It's been very exciting to see my brother winning challenges,

but I came into this competition thinking I was gonna do better than him.

[gasps] Wow.

[Antonio] I'm starting to think Jesus is my biggest competition.

Designers, there's a new sheriff in town.

And there's only gonna be room for one twin in this competition.

-Who would it be? Who would it be? -Are you sure, bitch?

-[Yuchen] What is happening on here? -[Veejay] Oh, my God.

One of them has to go at some point, so is it today? [chuckles]

[Veejay] I think that dealing with one twin is very challenging

and dealing with two twins is even more challenging. They should both go home.

[Belania] That looks like somebody's weave.

because I think that he does not have a clue what Western is.

I don't understand why he's doing a gown and not something that's in his element.

He say he's pushing himself.

I have hit a wall. I feel stuck and I'm moving so slow.

I am so thankful for my second chance, but I need to prove I belong here.

I cannot believe that this mistake

might turn out to be the greatest mistake I've ever done in this competition.

It's looking almost like a piece of art.

What about we have a lot of flag fringe from the hat?

I think you should make your dress more interesting first.

[Yuchen] More interesting?

Or you can add a jacket because it's boring.

But I don't know how to make progress.

Since we already have the base dress,

it's time for me to think about how am I gonna make this more Western.

If I had to go to a western event, I would make this for myself and put it on.

I know that I want to create something unexpected and out of the box.

but girl, I feel like she's going to be in the bottom.

I know it's risky, but I hope that the judges will see the work that I put in.

[Veejay] Ethan's dress is similar to the dress that I made

from the boring fabric challenge.

The judges don't like it

when you show something that the other designers have already done.

[Veejay] Jesus, I saw Ethan's dress and it kind of reminded me

of the gray dress that I made for Luz, right?

Maybe it's unintentional, you know? But, I mean, what do you think?

it kind of reminded me of the gray dress.

For this challenge, you had one day to create your take on Western chic.

CFDA award winning stylist and image architect Law Roach.

And joining us, a country music star

and the first African American female to be nominated for a Grammy

in the country music category, Mickey Guyton.

And executive vice president and creative director for Gap Inc.

and Chief Creative Officer of Old Navy, Zac Posen.

I've seen that face on Project Runway so many times.

This is not cute.

He is very meticulous with craftsmanship, one of the best designers that I know.

It's great to be back in the saddle here on Project Runway.

[Jesus] I nailed my look and it's Western and it's so chic.

And this burned leather,

what really was stressing me out, has turned into greatness.

This burn is a technique that I would definitely do again.

[Heidi] That is gorgeous

Like, I'm ready for a country Met Gala.

[Belania] As I see my look go down the runway,

I'm excited. I'm proud of it.

My eye goes directly to the denim and the tan leather,

and the sharp point cutouts look really cool. I like it a lot.

[Zac] Mm-hmm.

Like, I'd wear that right now.

[Ethan] I love this. I love seeing it just snake down the runway.

[Heidi] It's like Roberto Cavalli from ten years ago.

I just wish it would fit better on the breasts.

[Ethan] It feels really good to see what I have accomplished.

The styling and the detail and it's fun and it's a moment.

And if there's anything I know how to do, it's a moment.

[Antonio] I'm feeling so proud of myself, showcasing a piece

that I put all my soul and intentions into it.

[Antonio] I'm a fierce competitor. Don't underestimate me.

[Veejay] My vision to create something unexpected

and not the usual Western chic fashion is very risky.

Looking at all the creations on the runway, mine is different,

but I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the judges will appreciate

that I'm a designer who takes risks.

[Zac] It's like Casey Caldwell for Prada?

I don't understand that.

-[Heidi] Booby horns. -[chuckles]

[Yuchen] As Liris is going down the runway, I feel so happy.

She's totally rocked it out and she looks so fierce.

I'm very happy with the outcome.

[Jesus] I can literally read Mrs. Law's face

just by him rolling his eyes.

[Ethan] I can see that some of these designers are in trouble

and I just hope I'm not one of them.

because I know my look is really good

comparative to, like, some of these looks that are so, like…

There's got to be another word for boring. I just don't think they're interesting.

and I just thought the lines and everything was so beautiful.

There's complicated things happening here, right?

You're playing with different proportions, layering, volumes,

transparency, graphic, and it kind of all works.

I feel like you always find this way

of putting things together that, in theory, don't really work,

in a way, but it totally works and that makes it new again. So, I love it.

[Heidi] It is stunning. From every angle, every detail.

That coat is just singing, you know?

And that it's see-through and when she walked,

it was so beautiful and all this fringe you put on there.

The coat is really, really spectacular.

I love going to vintage stores

and this looks like it could have easily been from the 70s

and someone wore that to Woodstock

and just kept it in the most pristine condition.

[Zac] What is the top? Is it a print? Is it molded?

So creating this kind of, like, beautiful texture was a mistake.

-You know, I like the mistake of it. -Same. Same.

[Zac] That kind of spontaneity in design process

is when the most interesting discoveries get found.

-Like, the mess that works. -Yes.

[Mickey] I thought that that was not a mistake.

It's just so beautiful.

Out the gate when I saw it, I loved it instantly.

It's just amazing. Like, it was definitely one of my favorites.

I'm so relieved I made it to the top five and I'm just climbing to the top,

but, Veejay, girl, I think your time might be over soon.

Ethan, Veejay, and Yuchen, you created our least favorite designs.

All right, let's bring out your models.

Ethan, let's start with you. Tell us about your look.

I created my own evening wear avant-garde, snake in the grass.

When it first came out, I kind of felt like I'd seen this.

However, seeing in front of me right now, it's impeccably made.

[Mickey] I thought the dress really is stunning.

I think it was the ties that threw me off, personally.

[Law] I don't know if that's dark brown or black,

but had it been something more in the tone of the skins

that would have elevated it a little bit more and made it look even more expensive.

There's something to me that's going on with the boobs

-that's not quite flattering. -It's too narrow.

[Law] That's what pushed you out of the top three.

The styling is really good. I love the cowboy hat.

I love the drama with the tail and it does feel country, right?

-Yes, it absolutely does. -You missed the top three by a few points.

It's a showstopper. I'm not mad at it.

Veejay, see? The judges know that my work is not like your work.

Okay, Yuchen, can you tell us about your look?

I wanted to bring this excitement on the runway,

a little drama and when she walking on the runway,

-it's like… Right. -Like a nipple tassel.

So it's all about the excitement.

What I'm looking for in this country western fashion

is the authenticity and I just don't think that that was executed in this.

I don't understand how you are a streetwear designer

and you gave us an evening dress. And a really bad evening dress.

[Zac] I don't think it fit her that well.

If you're gonna play with the satire

and if it's gonna be something that's about, like, horny disco nasty couture.

Then it has to be, like, weirder and stranger and more perverse.

-Thank you, Zac. -Yeah.

I feel like you just went for something so nutty

that I'm like, did you think this was a winning look?

The taste level here is beyond. Beyond.

-Beyond good or bad? -Beyond bad.

For this particular challenge,

it was really intentional to kind of go on a different direction.

What is it gonna be in the future to see what Western fashion is?

[Law] So let's start with the good.

The good thing about you is that you know a woman's body.

-[Mickey] Mm-hmm. -The way you cut that curve

to make her waist look small in the exact place it should.

And using that nude material was brilliant.

Everything else is such a mismatch and so confusing.

Yeah, this was a miss for me.

This looked like a Project Runway nightmare.

It didn't make sense to me. Western chic, I'm just not getting that here.

Vinyl doesn't say modernity to me or futurism.

It's kind of postmodern, it's like it's been there.

We've been there since the 60s.

We asked for country chic. You gave us country shit,

and I'm not gonna hold that back.

I think you were trying to try something different

and the things that, like… Trust your gut, it's always 100% correct.

[Veejay] Both twins are in the top and I'm in the bottom.

This is embarrassing and now I might go home. This cannot be my ending.

-I was like, "not the moment." -No.

Last challenge, I was on the bottom. It took some confidence away from me.

[Yuchen] I've been questioning myself.

If I got the chance to stay in the competition,

I have to be able to shake that off.

Hopefully, they give me that chance.

There was absolutely nothing redeeming about it. The accessories, the necklace…

[Heidi] Terrible. And then he just bedazzled it everywhere.

Put the necklace on the hat. I have that hat from Etsy, by the way.

-I know you do. I saw you -I do.

Everybody who went to Beyoncé's **** tour had that hat on.

-They did. -He lost his confidence, though.

[Mickey] We've all lost our confidence before, you know?

But this? This, like, lost the plot.

Veejay, I mean, she brought something that didn't feel chic at all.

[Mickey] And the key to good Western, it has to be authentic.

Anytime that it's anything else,

it seems like it's making fun of what Western culture is.

It looked like a really bad costume party, yeah?

-It really did. -Yeah, I hate it.

-[Zac] You would never wear that. -No.

Right. This is recycled fashion and it should be recycled.
