HEIDI: Antonio and Veejay,

you made our two favorite looks on the runway.

This is out of control.

I'm literally in loss of words.

I've performed so well in this competition.

I think I also delivered something nice on the runway.

And I had a reveal. So, I'm so confused

as of why Veejay is not sitting in my spot right now.

I'm sorry.

[Belania giggles]

But that is... until someone convinced us otherwise.

CHRISTIAN: Hello.

I think you're both really talented and worked really hard.

JESUS: I'm so excited that my dream is still alive,

and I have never been more motivated to make it

to the finale than I am right now.

I am more confident as a solo designer than I've ever been.

And the finish line is really, really, really close.

HEIDI: There's five of you, but unfortunately

only three of you will make it to the big finale.

This is the most important challenge of this competition.

This is the challenge before the finale, and knowing that

two of us are going home, I can't mess this up.

Because this challenge determines who is going

to the finale, we had to do something

And we're certain the experience has changed you for good.

ARIANA: We wish we could be there in person,

but you are in amazing and talented hands.

We're pleased to welcome to the runway

the most swankified man in Oz.

Oscar-winning costume designer of "Wicked"...

- [Ethan screams] - How?

CYNTHIA: ...and the upcoming "Wicked: For Good,"

Paul Tazewell. - Good luck, designers.

- JESUS: Wow. - [designers cheer]

- Hi, designers. - Wow.

It is such an honor to have you here.

Aw, thank you. It's so great to be here.

- Oh, wow. - Oh, pinch me, pinch me!

Paul Tazewell is the first African American man to win

an Oscar for Best Costume Design,

on top of, like, all his other accolades,

'cause he's been really running these costume design

Broadway streets since the '90s, so, um, you know,

just in the presence of an icon. No big deal.

You will be creating an avant-garde look

based on the themes of the upcoming movie,

"Wicked: For Good."

[designers cheer]

To help inspire you, you are getting a sneak peek--

You're the only friend I ever had.

ELPHABA: But there's no going back.

[Glinda whispers] Think of what we can do...

Wow.

I can relate to this so much because Antonio and I

have such a strong brotherhood.

And Glinda and Elphaba have such a strong sisterhood.

So like, wow. This is such a beautiful challenge

for Antonio and I.

"Wicked" focuses on the power of friendship, marginalization

of people that are different, and also self-empowerment.

So, it's on you hopefully to take that inspiration

and create it in your own way and reimagine the idea of Oz.

HEIDI: And what if I told you

you might have not only one day...

- [Jesus screams] - ...but you have two days!

[designers cheer]

- VEEJAY: Oh, my God. - Finally!

- [laughter] - Girl, I'm about to cry.

A lot of emotions. I got saved, Paul Tazewell,

"Wicked," avant-garde. Damn it. [laughs]

Paul and Christian will meet you guys in the workroom

where there will be some other surprises, so enjoy.

Hi, designers.

So fragile, so expensive, so designer.

Is this for real? [laughs]

So, not only did you get a special look at the film,

you also get this fabulous, special look at the costumes

from the film, which is incredible.

And you're gonna get to talk directly

with the man who made it all come to life.

PAUL: What you see before you is Elphaba and Glinda.

For Elphaba, I leaned into all that was organic.

I was influenced by mycelia, the bark,

the underside of mushrooms.

Speechless.

With Glinda, it's all that is artificial,

all that is sparkly and beautiful.

I then wanted to really establish that idea

of the iridescent bubble-- the swirls and those things

that are whimsical,

and pink and green define what the world of "Wicked" is.

Think about this idea, take in the inspiration

of "Wicked: For Good" but still avant-garde and whatever

that means to you and your brand and your work.

It still needs to be fashion. It's still a runway.

Push it really hard.

You guys go sketch, and we'll come around.

[person screams]

This is my challenge.

I'm good at avant-garde.

- Hi. I'm Glinda. - [Paul chuckles]

- Obviously. - Very good.

ANTONIO: Thinking about doing a head-to-toe, beaded bodysuit

with gloves and do a beautiful cape of organza.

PAUL: Amazing. Well, make sure that you're also thinking about

avant-garde, like, something you've never seen before.

- Yeah. - Because, like, a pink bodysuit

is fabulous, but, like, Jennifer Lopez literally wears

that every single night, and a flowered cape, Valentino's

made for like, 20 years. - Yeah.

So, push it more.

ANTONIO: I'm not worried at all.

I hope my win last week can carry me through this challenge

and into the finale.

My biggest competition is my brother till, like,

I finally catch up, up to him,

the judges really are gonna see

what Antonio Estrada is capable of.

I wanted to tap more into the nature side, so I thought

about a beautiful tree. Nature has no linear lines.

- Absolutely. - But remember,

you still want that fashion moment.

BELANIA: I'm trying to use the design style that

I discovered for myself-- sophisticated streetwear--

and push it to avant-garde.

The pressure is turned up to 5,000,

and I really, really, really want to make it

to the finale, so I'm determined to deliver.

"Wicked: For Good" is a movie

about friendship being torn apart,

and I kind of want to create the fabric that's kind of like,

peeling off or being torn apart.

I really want it to be crazy, but in a good way.

I mean, what I'm seeing is really exciting.

Huge fan of texture.

Also like, your work is some-- you know, very quiet sometimes.

I think this has to be the fantasy.

- Yes. - CHRISTIAN: Right?

VEEJAY: I really agree with Christian.

In my work, it's very quiet because I think

that there is beauty in simplicity.

But avant-garde should not be quiet.

I love to play with restraint. A lot of Elphaba's journey,

she's restraining herself because of her skin.

Growing up, I was a little queer kid,

and I didn't know really how to express myself,

and so when I saw "Wicked,"

it did help me like, feel comfortable in my own skin,

and it really means a lot to me.

Ugh. I'm obsessed.

So, I wanna play with this beautiful, crystal overlay,

off the shoulder, flowing down.

It's just beautiful fabric.

You did do the first challenge where you had a glove

through your giant wind-cape.

And not standing still might not be enough.

This needs to be incredible,

which you of all people can do.

ETHAN: Mm. Avant-garde is my bread and butter.

I think that I could do a hybrid of what I've done before,

but these decisions are the ones that are gonna push me

to the finale, so I gotta make the right decisions.

It's a lot of pressure.

♪ Everybody get ♪

I have a really strong connection with Elphaba.

I wanna create this really amazing avant-garde coat dress

with really huge hips.

I don't know if avant-garde is in Jesus' wheelhouse

because he makes a lot of beautiful dresses.

But a beautiful dress is not avant-garde.

Then I want to mold the collar into around the neck

and into a hat.

VEEJAY: I mean, the silhouette of the dress is something

that we've seen before. It's literally exactly the same.

I don't know what he's thinking.

This challenge might be Jesus' downfall.

I got this.

And we're back. This is probably

the most important shop of the season.

Fabric is so important.

I have been eyeing this crystal fabric,

and I find this beautiful, green satin.

My original plan was to do silver

because of Glinda's shoes.

But that crystal fabric is more of a green tone, so, like,

green is just a natural choice.

Veejay, all this red is for you!

A lot of your budget is going to this one fabric.

VEEJAY: Setting myself apart from other designers

is a strategy that I've used for the entire competition

because you need to have a unique point of view.

- All gonna be red? - VEEJAY: Yes.

- The whole thing? - VEEJAY: Yes.

Very powerful.

It's a risk to use red because I know that

this is not the usual colors that you can associate

with the movie. But no risk, no reward.

Can I see your sketch, Veejay?

- No! - JESUS: See? See? See?

I don't know yet what I'm making!

CHRISTIAN: You don't have to show him.

I like that she doesn't show anybody.

I'm not taking it in a very personal level.

because I'm always very honest, and sometimes I lose friends

because of that. It might come across offensive.

I'd rather wear a Christmas sweater rather than

"Dancing with the Stars" that looks like a magician.

My coat was stronger than all your three pieces.

All your looks look from different designers.

Veejay has always seen us as frenemies.

But she's pushed me way too far.

I don't know if that's her strategy to make it to the top,

because I truly have no idea

why she's still in this competition.

There's not that much done.

I was gonna do a jumpsuit. I kinda had a nightmare

that J-Lo sent me home. So, I changed my mind.

I'm not doing a cape.

- It's almost like a shawl. - Okay.

And I wanna make it big, and I wanna make my own flowers.

- Big? It has to be huge. - Huge, yeah.

Focus on this "wow" moment piece. You need a flower cocoon.

- Flower cocoon. - Flower cocoon bubble.

Let me write that down. How do you spell "cocoon"?

[chuckles] I don't know.

This is one of Elphaba's friends from the forest.

- CHRISTIAN: Tree creature. - BELANIA: Yes.

This is really cool.

BELANIA: It's really hard to find texture

in the right color of trees and moss.

I don't think you should go too costume-esque.

- BELANIA: Right. - Like, the tree, what's gonna

make you stand out?

Knowing that I could have gone home in the last challenge,

it is shaking my confidence.

I'm worried about my look not standing out in the room

full of glitter, sparkle, and 3D definition.

I'm concerned.

CHRISTIAN: Who is she, Lady Godiva?

So, you're sticking with your plan.

Like, you're not gonna see the body at all? No.

Like, you're covering her up in green.

Even if it was just a small amount into a V or something.

You know, I could plunge this down

and really get it close to the body.

I think so. I don't want them to be like,

"This just isn't enough."

Throughout this competition, I have had to tone it down

because, you know, my sentiments for fashion

is really loud and bananas. But this challenge

is my opportunity to really turn what I'm good at up to 100.

This is that one challenge that you could push it

even just a little bit more. - Okay.

I don't want it to kind of look like

what I did for Unconventional. You know, the gown?

CHRISTIAN: Mm-hmm, mm-hmm.

I wanna make her a little more sexy.

CHRISTIAN: Mm-hmm. Think you can do all this?

- I'm just--let me. - I know but it's a lot of work.

Mm, I can handle it. I need to send her home.

Uh, yeah, what'd you just say?

Veejay just killed the vibe not too long ago.

She... she's one of those.

VEEJAY: I am sad because there's a lot of assumptions

that I am stirring the pot.

One of the things that I learned in this competition

is that you gotta be very careful

because people just really create drama out of nothing.

Veejay, the room is very frazzled about you today.

I know. I just don't know why.

It just feels so weird because it...

[voice cracking] they thought that I should...

that I should got eliminated last challenge.

I don't know.

Elphaba is a person

that kind of, like, being rejected for who she is.

- Mm-hmm. - And you know it's like, yeah.

[voice breaking] Like, you know, it's like,

I felt rejection so many times, and it's not that easy.

It's kind of like a--I kind of relate to that character.

As a trans woman being rejected...

- CHRISTIAN: Mm-hmm. - ...being said "no" a lot

of times, it's like...

no matter how hard it is...

- CHRISTIAN: I understand. - Yeah.

Trust me, I was an out little gay boy when I was on this...

- Yeah. - ...in 2008.

- Yeah. - It was rough. It wasn't fun.

- Yeah. - But you're here,

and there's so many allies in the world, and people are gonna

be so inspired by you. - Yeah.

There are things about me that people don't understand,

as an immigrant woman, as a trans woman,

and as a fierce competitor.

But those are the things that I like about me.

I see my uniqueness as a special power,

and I want to channel all of that into this design.

You get to create and show people what you can do and--

Yeah.

So, be proud of yourself.

A little trepidatious about them being like,

"It's too similar to the first one." But--

REBECCA: But it's a totally different, like, headpiece.

And pivoting last week hurt a lot.

But I'm hoping that I kill it.

One stumble could let me fall out of this competition.

I have never had an opportunity to have my work critiqued

by an Oscar winner.

- PAUL: How are you? - It's a pleasure.

- Nice to see you, yeah. - VEEJAY: So, this is...

this is it.

It's definitely avant-garde, and it would be great

to understand direction... so that it doesn't feel random.

Okay. I'll do that.

- It needs to be intentional. - Yeah.

My worry is that are they gonna get it?

Are they gonna see "Wicked"?

The face of your model is open,

and how does it relate to the green skin?

I think it could be kind of cool if all of her face

was covered, too.

Well, that's what I was wondering as well.

And I think that it would also push the avant-garde.

- ETHAN: That's a good idea. - Yeah, I'm excited to see that.

- PAUL: Antonio. - Hello, Your Majesty.

Well, thank you. Tell me about your design.

So, originally when we spoke, I wanted to do a catsuit.

Remember, Christian was like, "Oh, J-Lo's done that."

- PAUL: Right, right. - And I'm like, "You know what?

I'm gonna do the most beautiful evening gown I've ever made."

- Okay. - ANTONIO: And I'm adding

the green heart because it's this special place

for my Elphaba, which is my twin brother.

PAUL: Okay.

We've seen many evening dresses.

How is this an avant-garde statement?

Because this poppy flower that's on the floor,

it's gonna be her flower cocoon.

- Mm-hmm. - Kind of like wings?

♪

Pushing your silhouette is the direction that I would suggest,

really make it something we've never seen before.

That was fueling almost all of my decisions

when I was designing "Wicked."

So, how can you take us to that next level?

This is my interpretation of her hat.

Right? So, I want the point to be dramatic,

like, avant-garde.

And I wanted to do a 3D heart,

'cause you know, my brother's doing green.

And I mixed the pink in it.

VEEJAY: The twins obviously are helping each other.

But they're not helping each other editing the look.

If I am Jesus,

I will tell Antonio right now

to get rid of that ugly flower.

[giggles]

It represents the love that she

will forever in her life have for Glinda.

Wonderful. It--it touches my heart.

There may be strengths in what you have already that

if you focus on that and make that really beautiful,

then you really won't need anything else.

BELANIA: Where I'm at in my process is getting

the moss effect full throttle going.

What I see currently are silhouettes that

in and of themselves are interesting.

It's how do you keep all of it talking to each other.

Talking to each other. Mmm.

I like Belania's, but it doesn't read avant-garde.

It reads streetwear.

There's a lot at stake

'cause two people are gonna go so, girl, go big.

Push yourself beyond your comfort zone.

That's what avant-garde is all about.

Everybody, I'm hugely impressed.

Welcome to the runway, the final five! Yes!

As you know, in fashion, one day you're in,

and the next day you're out.

But tonight, two, unfortunately, will be out.

For this challenge, you had to create an avant-garde look

based on the themes from the new film,

She was morphing into the dress,

and the dress is morphing into the hat.

- It's gorge. - LAW: Stunning.

JESUS: My vision has come to life to perfection.

Such an iconic moment.

HEIDI: Uber gorge.

ANTONIO: I accomplished everything I wanted to

accomplish for this look.

She looks so, so elegant

and so avant-garde.

It's making me feel so proud of myself.

BELANIA: I'm happy seeing this green goddess

walk down the runway. My look does not have sparkle.

It does not have that much volume, but it's me.

Definitely me. And I'm obsessed.

I am hopeful that it's still enough to get me to the finale.

♪ You're messing with trouble ♪

VEEJAY: Seeing my look walk on the runway,

I feel spiral detail is so beautiful,

and the movement, it's so powerful.

I mean, the color is so dramatic,

and I'm really, really happy with the outcome of the dress.

♪ Know what I mean? I'm not regular ♪

ETHAN: This is all so magical,

to be able to see that look just fly down the runway.

It's sparkling under the light.

The lines are gorgeous. It looks expensive.

It looks unique. It looks so avant-garde.

And I think that I did myself so proud today.

This is gonna be so hard today. Oh, my gosh.

Designers, please step onto the runway.

We've scored your designs, and we wanna talk to all of you.

Jesus, we're gonna start with you and your model.

I really wanted to just create something very powerful.

I wanted to do a heart to incorporate the pink

of Antonio's fabric because to me,

it represents the love that Elphaba has for Glinda.

But for me, it's the love that I have for my twin brother.

Avant-garde means being innovative...

being experimental...

and that all came through.

It really is pushing the boundaries.

- [voice breaking] Thank you. - NINA: Well done.

Aw, Jesus!

It's okay to be emotional.

I think it's really, really, really beautiful.

Now, the shoes came out really draggy to me.

But you know what? This is a runway look.

This is the avant-garde moment when you can be outrageous.

It's going to hit Nina first.

She's gonna photograph it, edgy, cool.

No, it's gonna hit me first 'cause I'm gonna get it

- right off the red carpet. - Oh, you gonna fight. Okay.

- We're gonna get it-- - Oh, now you fight, baby.

Nina came back feisty tonight.

That's what you say every time I come on.

I did love the look. It came out and I was like, "Wow."

The sparkle, how you placed them all.

I don't know, it just gives it this kind of, texture in a way.

It's divine.

Okay, Antonio. Let's get your model out.

I knew that I was gonna do a pink dress inspired by Glinda.

- WOMAN: Mm-hmm. - And what really came

to my mind is the poppy flower in the movie.

I love the dress. I think the dress is beautiful.

Does it read to me immediately "Wicked"? No.

I'm seeing a little bit more Vegas.

The construction on the actual dress is really beautiful.

Let's talk about the back,

because that's what I'm most troubled with.

That's a disaster. And it is not defying gravity.

- [gasps] Ugh. It's bad. - LAW: Tell the truth.

Shame the devil.

It's--it's--its--it's a-- it's like a bad piñata.

I know that deep inside you know this is...

The back of the dress looks really unfinished.

I see all your seam works.

It is a bit messy from the back. But I do love the volume.

This brought me back, I feel like, to the beginning.

So, even though I was rising to the top,

I feel like I'm back to square one so, I'm... shutting down.

Um, I think the dress is beautiful,

and I actually like the flower.

- I want it. - You can have it, Tyra.

- Thank you, Antonio. - Hi, Veejay.

- Hi, Heidi. - Let's bring out your model.

"Wicked: For Good" is about friendship being torn apart.

So, I bought red silk, and I literally...

- HEIDI: Shredded it. - ...shredded it apart.

And Paul mentioned that one of the most important

design elements for "Wicked" is the spiral.

The deconstruction of wrapping that boning

and making it look shredded looks fantastic.

The shoe is spectacular.

Kind of took my breath away.

There was a lot of creativity to it.

- I really loved it. - I think it's beautiful.

I think it's avant-garde. And then the shoe looks clunky.

Does it read "Wicked" to me? No.

The red totally threw me off.

Had this been in green or black,

you could have told the same story,

and it would have made more sense for the movie.

But I do think that you did make something really interesting.

I used to teach branding, and there are certain things

with branding that are non-negotiables.

And one of those is color.

So, for me, that's, like, a big miss.

Like, a huge miss.

- Thank you, Veejay. - Thank you. Thank you so much.

Okay, Ethan. Let's bring out your model.

This could have easily been a $50,000 couture dress,

and you ruined it with those underwear.

That is one of my biggest pet peeves...

- Right? - LAW: ...on the red carpet, when

...when it's the wrong underwear, but it's fab.

I love the addition of the ostrich feathers.

It also is Elphaba with the cape,

and the end of the first movie

when Glinda threw that cloak around her, and she flew off.

I think you did an incredible job.

It's gorge. I mean, you definitely took a risk

by hiding her face, because it could have been like,

that you either hate it or love it.

I happen to love it. You know, it's like...

[operatically] ♪ Ahh ♪

What I like the most about your work

is when you play with these opposites, right?

So, here is a sense of modesty

but at the same time, a sexiness.

I was just blown away. I think it's very stunning.

This is unique. This is special.

Okay, Belania, let's bring out your avant-garde look.

When Paul was explaining his inspiration,

he went to nature to see all the textures and the colors,

and I was inspired deeply 'cause I'm a plant person.

But since this is avant-garde, I had to go a little bit bigger.

I'm so torn here.

I love the gauchos.

However, I don't know about that tail.

It's giving me a little crocodile tail.

And it's not even even. So, there's--

Well yeah, that-- that speaks to nature

and the unevenness in nature. It's supposed to be

representative of moss. - NINA: Okay. But does it

give you a little crocodile, alligator tail?

To me personally, no, it doesn't.

I love it. I think there's different levels of avant-garde.

- Right. - There's avant-garde couture,

and there's avant-garde street fashion.

Right.

I think it's absolutely stunning.

My issue is everybody else took a chance.

And I think this was pretty safe.

In your opinion, what you've seen so far.

That's not helping you, babe.

Really? You don't think this is you? I think this is--

I'm uncomfortable putting this on the run-- I love it.

But this is, to me, this is like, big.

Well, you're gonna have to be uncomfortable a lot

in this business. That's the name of the game.

Fashion is all about the new.

It's safe.

I have never yelled at a girl likes before!

I was rooting for you! We were all rooting for you!

- BELANIA: God... - Is it really that serious?

- JESUS: Oh, bitch, it is. - That was iconic.

I actually agree with Tyra.

Rick Owens is considered to be one of the greatest

avant-garde designers of our generation.

And for me, this is what that feels like.

I do think it's avant-garde.

And I do think it's really beautiful.

It's the thing of not being able to take the critiques

that loses me with you every single time

because if I didn't care, I wouldn't say anything.

I always say, like, cuss us out in your head.

- Right. - [voice breaking] I'm sorry.

I'm not trying to be disrespectful.

do you think should come with you?

Whew. Well, I can just say I would love to see my brother

do a collection.

And I would love to see Ethan do a collection.

I've been so proud of what he's been doing in the competition.

Belania, who would you take with you?

I would go with the two twins.

Throughout the whole competition,

I have volleyed so many ideas, and my work has grown so much.

Like, they've been just watering the seeds...

to see my brother be in the finale with me

because I am so proud of what he's done

and what he's learned in this competition.

And then Ethan-- we saw the growth in him

through this competition.

I would love for top four

because I think Belania found who she truly is as a designer.

I truly don't know if Veejay

really knows what her DNA is in the competition.

The strategy is they don't want me to be in the top three

because they know that if I'm in the top three,

I have a strong chance of winning this.

LAW: So, who would you take with you?

I will definitely take Ethan and Belania

because I think that these two people are kind.

And I think that we need the money more than them.

And I feel--

Well, what makes you think that?

I like to work with people who are kind and humble.
