of bothered me, honestly.

If you forgive other people
when they sin against you,

God will also forgive you.

What was it about the
verse that bothered you?

Hope: All of it.

I mean, I understand the idea.

I know in church,

they say you're supposed
to forgive people, but...

is this saying that God won't
forgive us if we don't?

Jennifer: That's a
challenging question.

Well, if that were the case,
how would you feel about it?

Hope: I think that
would be unfair.

Also, I thought the
whole point of Jesus

was that God is
supposed to love us

regardless of what we've done.

I mean, isn't that what
everyone's been saying here?

Jennifer: No, you're right.

The grace that we receive
from Jesus is free.

It's a gift.

You don't have to earn it.

But if you accept it, He'll
separate you from your past,

and He'll make you a new person.

Hope: OK, but that's not
what this other verse said.

The verse in the prayer
closet made it seem like

you have to forgive in
order to be forgiven.

Jennifer: OK.

how do you feel about forgiving
the people who hurt you?

Hope: I don't think...

That's...

That's not going to happen.

What they did was unforgivable.

They should go to prison,
all of them, forever.

They shouldn't be allowed
to hurt anyone ever again.

And they should be
brought to justice,

and hopefully they will.

But what is it that makes
their actions unforgivable?

Hope: They're criminals.

Bad, horrible people.

They took everything from me.

I used to be...

normal.

I had a normal
family, a normal life,

and they took that from me.

They took that from me,
and I'll never get it back.

All the girls I used to know,

they're graduating high school,

and picking out colleges
and going out with boys,

normal boys.

And what do I get?

I'm an addict.

I'm a dropout.

I'm a whore.

I didn't get to choose
anything in my life.

Everything just happened,
and I just had to take it.

Now I can't sleep.

I can't breathe.

I can't talk to my family.

I can't let my dad touch me.

And it's because
they did this to me.

I didn't get a choice.

I didn't get a choice
about anything.

I didn't choose to do drugs.

I didn't choose to let people
buy me out for a night.

I didn't choose to leave
behind everything in my life

that was good.

It was them who did this to me.

And I am never going to
forgive them for that, ever.

that you went through.

I hate them so much.

I used to hate them, too.

Hope, I mean, everybody
heals in their own way.

I can't say that's what's gonna
work for you, but it did for me.

Eventually...

I forgave them.

Hope: How?

Jennifer: Look, I...

I never thought
that I would ever

be able to forgive
my traffickers...

after what they put me through.

But forgiveness,
in this case, Hope,

it has nothing to do with them.

It's about you, what
you're storing in here.

Look, when we're hurt, we hold
all of that hurt in our hearts.

Okay, that's normal.

We all do that.

But when we can forgive...

we can start to release all
of that anger, and that pain,

and that grief that's been
keeping us from moving on.

We can let go of the way the
past has given our life meaning.

We can finally be free.

Hope: But how do I do
that when I keep feeling

the way that I'm feeling?

How do I forgive...

when I completely shut down
every time I think about them.

Jennifer: You're
still processing, OK?

That is OK.

Keep processing.

Maybe while you're working
through those feelings,

maybe there's something
that you can store

in place of the thing that
you want to let go of.

Hope: Like what?

Jennifer: I don't know.

It's your heart.
