Yet, many of the stories I
read in writing workshops

begin, inevitably, with someone
getting up in the morning.

Much less often
does a story begin

with someone going to bed.

Of course, real
people seldom behave

as predictably as
characters in stories.

That's one of the first things
you taught me as a writer.

And strangely,

one of the last
things we talked about

while you were still alive.

[Jerry] And o'er
this sickle bending;

motionless and still;

As I mounted up the hill,

Long after it was heard no more.
