Fashion takes inspiration from all kinds of things.

Art, music, even the unconventional.

So for your next challenge, you'll be creating a runway-worthy version

of your unconventional materials look

completely made out of fabric.

Runway version?

[Antonio] I know not to use denim. [laughs]

- Wow. - [Madeline] Ugh.

If I had the energy to scream, I'd probably be screaming quite a bit.

I didn't love the look that I made.

[Christian] And it can't just be a story.

Visual, meaningful, they have to connect

because both looks are gonna walk down the runway together.

- [Antonio scoffs] - Wow. Oh, my God.

- [Ethan] Damn. - Wow.

Head home tonight, do some sketching, get some rest.

because I want to prove to the judges that I am an amazing designer and stylist.

I think the only complaint in my life is Law Roach so we gotta fix that.

Guys, that was rough.

Ms. Joan, how do you feel? You're back for another week.

- Yeah, just need to process everything. - Yeah, okay.

I'm gonna put Joan on the runway.

Veejay: This is a great opportunity to show your other side.

Veejay: as a tailor.

I've been tailoring for over 20 years.

This is what I do. I can tailor a suit so this is my opportunity to bring it.

- Look, that's sick. - [Joan] I was thinking...

Antonio: I don't even sketch.

Antonio: Jesus, usually I'll tell him what to sketch for me.

I'm jealous of you guys for having brothers because if I had my brother here...

Veejay: I think it's an advantage.

- [Veejay] It's a huge advantage. - [Madeline] ...because they're going to,

- no matter what, help one another. - [Veejay] Yeah.

[Ethan] The last challenge was the first individual challenge

but the twins are still working together.

If that is what it takes for y'all to win, awesome,

but I'm able to eat it up without having family in the room.

[Veejay] I have a question.

Do you think both of you can do one challenge

where you're completely separate?

Because you're used to be, like, working each other,

so maybe for this challenge, like, just challenge yourself.

[Madeline] I'm capable of a lot more than what I put down the runway

in the last challenge.

However, to turn something that I hated into something that I like

is going to take some real work.

[Christian] You don't want anything iridescent-y?

[Madeline] I think that that's pretty iridescent, and I'm gonna do stuff to it.

My confidant, my best friend here, Joseph McRae, has left.

So I'm definitely feeling that loss.

And I need a solid amount of time to sit with what happened,

but I don't have time to do that.

[♪ "Designer (feat. Suedecouch)" playing]

[Antonio] Child, it looks like rotten in here.

Oh. It's Miss Joan's dress.

[Joan cackles] I don't wanna see that.

Last challenge, I was so far in the bottom that they had to dig me out the dirt.

It looks like dead vegetation. Just throw her in the compost.

I have to take inspiration from it. I'ma try and redeem myself.

So I'm gonna have to show Law who I am as a designer.

Leave it all on the runway.

I really don't wanna look at this all day.

- I shoved bitch in the corner. [laughs] - [Antonio laughs]

[Ethan] I wanna create a cocoon outer shell gown

that reveals into, like, a J.Lo butterfly sexy moment.

I think because these are triangular

they're gonna be covering the whole thing, sort of like a wing.

[Madeline] I didn't love the look that I made last week, that's not me.

So I'm making these hard kind of sharp edges into something more soft.

She's going to be feathery. She's going to be birdlike.

She's going to be awesome.

[Christian] What's happening over here?

I wanna keep the same silhouette where it's see-through and sexy.

So I wanna do a see-through pant with a corset.

- Your corset top needs to be incredible. - It's gonna fit well.

[Christian] Make sure. Okay.

[Antonio] I'm cutting it now. I'm pretty fast.

[Antonio] Last challenge, I almost got voted off.

But I'm here for another week

and I'm gonna set myself apart from the other designers and my brother.

I wanna stand out. I already do because I'm gorgeous.

[smacks lips] Uh. Perfection.

Okay, I can figure this out.

- Look was very rock and cool... - Yeah. So I wanna--

[Christian] ...but you're doing like an evening gown.

But it's like how do you make that feel, like, edgy.

[Jesus] I wanted to utilize the red, instead of doing a front lapel,

to incorporate a back lapel.

- I mean, you have to have the red... - [Jesus] Yeah, of course.

[Christian] ...in some way. To visually connect.

- So it's a gown, right? - Yes. This is very streetwear.

Very "I'm going to a bashment party," you know.

[Christian] Uh-huh. Yep.

And this is very "I'm stepping on the runway."

[Belania] I've never made a dress specifically like this before,

but I want to showcase my skills as far as gown-making goes for a curvier woman.

[Christian] It's a flag dress.

When I think of soccer, I think of World Cup.

All these countries, it's exciting.

My idea is to make this black and white soccer ball bomber jacket

with this big flag dress that celebrates the energy of the soccer stadium.

Edit the colors like you edited those colors on that look.

- Remember, visually connected. - [Yuchen] Yeah. Yeah.

Wow. That looks pretty.

For this one, I want the boning to be outside.

Yeah.

[Veejay] I really wanna make another structure using the boning.

It's a very meticulous process

because boning is something that you need to hand sew.

But I haven't won yet,

and I want the judges to see my impeccable craftsmanship

in all the things that I do.

This is my power, my hands.

[Christian] Wow. This is a beautifully-cut suit.

Clearly, you can make clothes.

So I get that you wanna do this beautiful amazing suit,

but I think the connection will still be important, you know.

And that's why I'm trying to still keep the connectivity

- with the corsetry. - [Christian] With the corsetry.

I was even thinking of taking the Popsicle sticks.

If you do that, I quit. Right now.

[all laugh]

[all] Child. [laughing]

I just want them to see something here that they didn't see there, you know.

Law really didn't like this dress, you gotta prove him wrong.

Lord have mercy.

[Joan] Everyone is a little worried about me, you know.

But I got this. I'm a fighter.

I've been through the hardest fight of my life.

Back in 2020,

I made it onto the cast of Project Runway for the first time,

but I also found out that I had breast cancer.

And I needed to start treatment immediately.

My biggest fears during that time is,

"Am I gonna be strong enough to fight and beat this thing?"

But let me tell you, I rang that bell

and Mama Joan is four years cancer-free.

This is more than just a competition for me.

This is a full circle moment.

To win Project Runway would be such a validation.

I wanna feel that I can be an inspiration to so many women out there

that there is life after, you know, being diagnosed.

[stutters] I'm like a walking zombie right now.

[huffs]

[Jesus] I think the one-day challenges are definitely starting to take a toll

because, like, there is no time to rest.

[Antonio, in Spanish] What's wrong?

My body is, like, not...

[in English] Like I'm not even, like...

To be honest, like, even [bleep] like inspired to do this. [cries]

[Antonio] Seeing my brother like going through all the emotions.

That's not usually his persona, he's usually stronger than I am.

[sniffles, grunts]

[Antonio] I'm really concerned because I want him to still be in the competition.

[Jesus clears throat, sniffling]

I don't even want to [bleep] do it... to be honest.

Jesus: It's a lot.

- Antonio: Should we go home? - Jesus: No.

I'm really sorry that Jesus is struggling, but so am I.

Like, I wish I had my best friend here

so that I have someone that I can lean onto,

but you know, I have to do it on my own.

Someone needs to take that sense of comfort from them

so that they can realize that this is a competition.

[Antonio] I see everybody keeping an eye on us.

All them bitches want to separate us. He's my twin brother,

so if you [bleep] with my brother, then you're gonna have two enemies.

I made it a little bit big.

- [Christian] Is it asymmetrical, this top? - [Antonio] Yeah.

Well, it looks kind of like a little bit like a mistake

'cause it's, like, not enough.

I think you still have to figure out this understructure.

[Christian] For me. It doesn't look like anything.

And that just really truly gives me strength.

I'm ready to show the judges exactly what I am made of.

[Ethan] That red stripe on Jesus's gown is looking pretty familiar.

[Christian] Here we go.

[Ethan] I've been working primarily on the outer part,

so I have a lot of finessing to do.

[Christian] Are you realizing that this doesn't work?

- It needs a lot of zhuzhing. - [Christian] So what are you gonna do?

[Ethan] Let's try on the other dress.

[Christian] The dress underneath is not good.

- Do you think I should scrap... - I think you have to scrap one of them.

- ...the whole reveal? - Yes, that's what I'm saying.

Then you still have one look. You gotta try something.

I think the shoulders could still be more.

Yeah. This is the only one that I love,

- but I think I can elaborate it more. - Okay... You have enough.

[Veejay] Hand sewing is a major component to execute that design,

and I don't have a lot of time left.

But I've applied to be in the show since 2012.

I've waited for 13 years and now that I'm here,

I'm not gonna waste any opportunity to show the judges what I can do.

You just dislike it?

[Christian] This looks really messy.

The frayed edges on this looks very amateur.

All right.

[Madeline] I really don't want this amateur tag to be put on me.

That's a fear of mine because I taught myself for the most part,

so my construction skills are sometimes behind other people.

I gotta figure it out.

Maybe the organza looks a little more refined and beautiful and soft...

Okay.

- ...and maybe that all over in diamond... - [Madeline] Okay. Yeah, that's helpful.

I'm going for soft, feathery, maybe like a snowy egret.

But I'm seeing a dirty, dirty little pigeon.

[Christian] That's it, designers.

- I'm... I'm in trouble. - [Christian] Say goodbye to your models.

For this challenge, you were asked to create a look

inspired by your unconventional materials design,

but made completely out of fabric.

The connection between the two must be visual and meaningful.

All right, let's meet the judges.

CFDA award-winning stylist and image architect, Law Roach.

And our guest judge for today, fashion designer and business titan, Jenna Lyons.

All right, let's start the show.

[Yuchen] My looks looks very cohesive together.

The bomber jacket looks so sexy, so hot, so modern,

and the dress is cool.

It's just so amazing. I feel so good.

Heidi: Super creative.

Heidi: Like a superhero.

But this, it still looks unconventional to me.

[Veejay] I'm so nervous, but at the same time,

I'm very, very excited and proud of myself.

It's a representation of who I am as a designer.

You can tell immediately that these two looks are a labor of love.

I [bleep] love it.

It's good.

It's like there's an actual inspiration connection.

[Madeline] I'm not proud of what I put down today.

It's not my best work.

And I'm feeling like I don't want to watch this runway.

[Belania] I feel good. It doesn't look absolutely haphazard and crazy.

Madeline: How did you get it to fit her that well?

The construction isn't bad.

They both look cohesive.

[Joan] I don't think my unconventional garment was that bad

but definitely this is an elevated version of that.

The previous critiques lit a fire under my tail for me to show them what I got.

The fashion fabric being so close to the original is cohesion.

- So, I did my job. - Heidi: Pretty.

[Ethan] I'm proud of my little butterflies,

But when I saw the red stripe, I was convinced this was Ethan's look.

it's the same feeling of what the shuttlecock is giving us.

And also what you gave here,

like, you always wanna have a lot of interest, you know,

around your cleavage and everything, and it's giving all of that.

It's fragile but strong, unexpected,

really marvelous.

The transparency, the tailoring, everything was really smart.

I mean, it's the most perfect side boob I've ever seen.

Jumpsuits are hard to fit. It's just... I think it's spot-on.

I love those little cups that are poking out and giving that fabric is so cute.

unfortunately you were our least favorites today. Let's bring out your models.

All right, Belania, I'm just so confused by what you've done.

I look at you and I see a young, clued-in, fashion-forward, modern young woman,

and then I see what you created today

and to me this looks like a real old-fashioned look.

You are supposed to create for tomorrow.

The fabric looks cheap.

Jersey fabric or something else in another color,

this might be acceptable and might be okay,

but with these colors and this fabric, there's--

Acceptable is not winning anything around here though.

- [Law] Exactly. - [Jenna] I've seen this dress...

[stammers] ...a corset with the ruffle bottom and it's not my favorite.

They're not twins but they are sisters, Tacky and Jackie.

And do you think this is a good dress?

No, but today my model called out sick,

so I had to take in my dress by at least eight inches.

That's not an excuse.

Also, the model and you have to take it in that's the strong part.

That's what you did well.

[Jenna] I don't love the really chunky straps.

I know that the person who had originally put it on might--

'Cause she was a size 20.

I couldn't put certain styles of our model so I said,

"Okay, I will make a beautiful silhouette kind of dress."

Had you presented that as a bathing suit and a sarong cover up,

it would have made more sense.

Like, putting her in shorts or pants or even a bathing suit,

you guys probably would've gave me the same comment.

What I don't understand is the body language and the attitude.

Yeah, what does that attitude tell us?

I actually like the way that you mimic the hard edges

from your unconventional look.

Just because you put some triangles onto the top doesn't make it cohesive for me.

I really don't like the length of the skirt, the bottom of the skirt.

It looks like a napkin.

Like, it's not enough strength.

When you are presenting a runway,

- it's about the complete polished look. - Mm-hmm.

I think you're demure in your approach to your shapes.

Like, the skirt and the proportion of the top are almost the same.

Can you raise the top? Like, uh...

Yeah, like if it was tiny and the sleeve was tiny

- and it was a little bit of a crop top. - [Madeline] Hmm.

I just think like you could have gone bigger

and pushed that skirt and pushed that shape.

- It feels like you're holding back. - Fair enough.

Antonio, I actually was probably the only one that gave this a high score. [laughs]

I love that it's sheer. I love that you see her G-string through it.

Obviously there's some fit issues here, but--

I don't know if it was intentionally asymmetrical,

but it wasn't asymmetrical enough,

so I couldn't tell if it was just twisted.

It should have been, could have been. [chuckles] It's not.

In terms of construction, there's a lot of problems here.

To me, she's making sad clothes.

Like the first one when it came out,

I was like, okay, it had some pop and, like, some fancy, like, sparkle to it.

[Heidi] You also could feel that the model was loving that.

It felt like somebody took the air out of it.

Like, I'm not proud of what I put down today.

I don't think it's representative of me as a designer.

I don't wanna be putting things out there that are confused and "sad girl."

When you put your heart and soul and you work for over 14 hours,

I don't feel like the judges are understanding and it's getting to me.

What do you guys think about Belania?

I was so sad to find out that that was her look.

She has this great personal style.

- You think that great personal style? - She's--

[Nina] You know, she's very memorable.

I think Belania got thrown off trying to make someone else happy

as opposed to doing her own thing.

And it feels like that kind of tripped her up maybe.

I get a sense of personality from Belania.

I think there's a spark in there.

She did have to, like, cinch that in a lot, Belania, you know.

But that's what that's what designers do.

I know, but, like, last minute?

That's not an excuse. That's what designers do.

It was like Carmen Miranda without fruit on her head.

It is a literal prom dress.

Yeah, '80s prom dress, bad '80s prom dress.

I feel misunderstood because I tried to make something

that I thought the judges wanted to see,

but that was an epic fail.
