in this world of fashion needs to be seen.

It feels like shit, but I don't think
my look was the worst look.

from the biggest show on the planet,

We are kind of a big deal.

So as some of you may know,
Lisa and I play teachers,

and we have been known to get into
a fair bit of mischief on our show.

Because as you may notice,

we are here after the school science fair

and it will be your job
to provide the mischief.

Designers, this is
the unconventional materials challenge.

[cheering]

I knew it. I knew it.

This is the end all
be all of Project Runway.

You know every season there's gonna be
an unconventional challenge.

So I'm like, "Here we go."

Oh, I'm excited. On RuPaul's Drag Race,

I created this piece out of sleeping bags.

That's the piece that put me on the map.

That was all unconventional materials.

So I feel like I can redeem myself
from last week.

Everything you see here is fair game
to be used as material.

[Lisa] So everything
from the science fair projects,

to the craft table,
to the sports equipment,

to this banner up above you
can all be used in your work.

This is a one-day challenge.
You'll start work tomorrow.

And, designers,
we do not wanna see a bunch of junk

hot-glued to some fabric.

We wanna see something exciting,
innovative and creative.

You have exactly 20 minutes
to gather your materials

for your unconventional look.

-Designers…

I got a bunch of Slinkys.

[Joseph] This is the Joseph McRae pile.
Do not touch it. I dare you.

There's so much stuff,
and I'm just like a kid in a candy store

just grabbing stuff.

This is, like, my thing.

I use a lot of upholstery fabrics
and different kind of, like, plastics.

So everything that I create
is made out of "unconventional" material.

[Joseph shrieks]

Joseph is grabbing everything
and the kitchen sink.

-[Joseph] This is mine.
-And it's chaos around this gymnasium.

This is so fun. Isn't it great
to not be at work right now?

Oh, my God. I'm nauseous.

-Please stop.

[Madeline] I really don't like
to be rushed.

This is really out of my element,
and it's out of my zone of creativity.

I'm trying so hard
to grasp on to anything.

This is not how I… I work.

This is mine. Those are my balls.

I already have my eye on
what I want to create and make.

I can make something
really cool in structure

with the material of the volleyball.

[Veejay] I'm like, "Oh, my God.
What materials I'm gonna use?"

And I see this volleyball.
Like, I kind of want to use it.

I think Veejay

I came into this competition
to make it to the end.

I do have my twin brother,
and we'll always work as a team,

but now it's like you're on your own.

I have to prove myself to these judges
to keep rising to the top

and get that win that I'm waiting for.

I'm making this soccer ball top
and miniskirt.

It's gonna be so cool and so sexy.

You know, my whole life has been fashion.

So when I was young, like,
you know, in my childhood,

-I got abused for many years.
-[Ethan] Oh.

And after that, I'm being, like,
you know, a boy who is very shy.

I can't even look at people's eyes
when I'm talking to people.

But, you know, when my high school
is coming, Lady Gaga came out.

-Yeah?
-She's so inspiring.

From there,

I get into this whole new world of music
and fashion, you know?

I feel empowered.

Because of my childhood, I realized

whatever I've been through,
no matter it's good or bad,

this is why I am who I am as a designer,

and I can spread my message to the world.

[Jesus] I have an idea.

You do a bomber that's, like, poky.

Or I was thinking about
sewing it like this

and attach the whole jacket in the corner
so I have peekaboo skin

and the leopard dress underneath.

[Ethan] It's annoying that the twins
share the workload,

but, girl, they've been together
since birth,

so it's gonna take a lot of work
to separate them now.

But we'll see if we can get them apart.

Bubble wrap or tissue?

[Jesus] I don't think that me and Antonio

have an advantage in this competition,
to be honest.

Honestly, exactly what we do with,

like, helping each other
and bouncing ideas with each other,

we have been doing with
every other designer in this competition.

I love playing with shuttlecocks
but never did I know

That's why I wanna make sure that I have
something that it will hold on to.

What was school like for you younger?

-It's really good.

I'm getting emotional
because I had a good childhood.

Growing up as a gay guy,
like, you know, a trans kid,

-like, my parents supported me.
-Amazing.

-Yeah, they loved me, so, yeah. Yeah.

I grew up in Manila, Philippines.

And if you're a trans woman living
in the Philippines, you're not safe.

But my parents embraced my uniqueness,
so I grew up with love.

And now I wanna be the first trans person
to win Project Runway.

I got my hands on these
really cool butterflies.

It's going to be very referential
to Alexander McQueen

and just give a beautiful shape.

I really want this to be good
'cause I have a lot to prove,

especially from this
flop-a-tina of this last week.

Like, this is looking beautiful.

the whole thing has to be that.

to understanding myself as a designer.

on my idea, I have to throw it out.

and just keep it going with a romper.

So the whole coat is gonna be
in these flag pieces.

[Antonio] I'm making
an oversized bomber jacket

out of these flags stuffed with tissue

with a vinyl bubble cocktail dress.

You've gotta make this coat amazing,

-because it's kind of your moment.

And then with the dress,

I just don't think
it should be so sheer everywhere.

I am an amazing designer
and stylist on my own.

This design is gonna prove that,

This is deeply out of my comfort zone.

to merge my fashion

and my technical background.

So I'm using the science fair banner
as the base of my garment,

like, cross between technology
and fashion.

Already your clothes and your shapes
are fabulous.

from a middle school.

but I hope this runway show

[Yuchen] When my model's
walking on the runway,

I feel so excited, so fresh and so happy.

I love my soccer ball miniskirt.

Look at the booty.

I think it's super bold.

[Veejay] I'm really proud about my work.

Transforming shuttlecocks and creating
a piece that looks like lace,

it's a huge achievement
for this challenge.

So I'm like, okay,
I hope that they appreciate it.

My God, maybe this is the time
that I will win.

[Madeline] You know, watching it
walk down the runway,

it's not as bad as I remembered.

The lighting is actually helping.
It's shining, it's reflecting.

I still think I'm going to be in

as I thought it was going to be.

I am taking a chance

that they may think
it's not unconventional enough.

my own individual design and voices.

what I created with unconventional.

"Wow, I can totally see this,
like, an artist for sure."

I want Law to notice, like,
all the hard work that it took

to create this pattern out
of just volleyballs.

I want him to notice the structure,
I want him to notice the material,

but I also want him to wonder,

"What is it made out of?"
Because it looks really good.

going down the runway.

It looks super tribal
and you can't really even tell

that it's made from Popsicle sticks.

It's supposed to be like a snakeskin.

[Joan] I think I was very successful
in using these unconventional materials.
