This is Korea, 1952.
The combat zone has developed into a sporadic twilight war
of artillery duels and night patrol.
Flash attacks in small areas.
Rollovers and rollbacks.
And positions that change hands over and over and over again
until neither side could say what positions it controlled.
Not even the soldiers themselves.
And these are the soldiers.
Officers like Lieutenant Tom Flagler
whose decisions must not be wrong.
Non-coms like Sergeant Vince Gaspari
who must see these decisions carried out.
And the men who follow.
Felix, who tries to laugh at war.
Stacey, who fights it with his Browning Automatic Rifle.
O'Hirons, to whom the battlefield
is the shortest route home.
Moose, the communications man.
Geronimo, the Apache Indian
taking to a modern kind of warpath.
Mark Hu, the boy.
The only one who didn't have to cross an ocean
to find this war.
There's the mortar team, George and Strangler
called the plumbers because of that tube that spits death.
And the other soldiers of the United Nations
as represented by the British tankers
Sergeant Kensemmit, Corporal Enoch
and Private Fontenoy.
Every soldier fights his own war.
But win or lose, he tries to do that
which is the most difficult of all things in war.
He tries to stay alive.
An idiot child my mother raised.
I'd no business setting our camp so close to the front.
There are many refugees alive today
because wewerethat close.
It's a fine thing.
We start out shooting inoculations into refugees
and wind up with the Reds shooting at us.
We knew there was some danger. They warned us.
In this cautious world, honey, they warn us about everything.
You should have heard what they told me about men.
Sue?
Sue?
- You alright, miss? - I'm alright.
No, she's dead.
You'll have to come along with us.
- I can't leave her here. - You must leave her.
We're behind enemy lines.
That's not possible. Our lines are...
I've been unconscious for five hours.
Consider yourself lucky, if you'd been moving
the Reds might have noticed you when they passed.
Our lines have been rowed wayback, miss.
They're somewhere towards the south now if they're anywhere.
Hello, miss. Right this way.
I have to clear that engine soon, David.
Not here, Devon. It will have to hold on.
Harry, lend a hand.
Hey, careful there.
- Thanks for the hand. - It's my pleasure, darling.
We've been needing a woman's touch around the place.
Where'd you come from, miss?
I'm with the United Nations' health team. This morning--
Yeah, they smeared us real bad.
We took a bad one ourselves.
Some shell fragments got in.
You'd have thought that was a madman
swinging an axe around in here.
- Must have been terrible. - Bad enough.
Two of the crewmen got killed.
Radio equipment smashed.
Oh, well, Phyllis still runs.
She'll get us out of here.
'Harry! Get out there.'
Give us a ring if you want a thing, miss.
The service is bad, but, oh, the food'shorrible.
Move out!
She'll go soon, David.
How long will it take to fix it?
Depends on what's wrong.
Alright, get into that brush.
Harry, the 50.
You may as well get some air, miss.
We'll be here for quite a while.
Few more minutes, miss, and Phyllis will be purring
like a well-fed kitty.
- Isn't this an American tank? - Yes, miss.
We lost some of our tanks and no time to replace them
'so the Yanks loaned us Phyllis.'
The Yanks, as usual, are most generous.
Ah, everybody is using Yank equipment this war, miss.
Even the Chinese.
They captured most of the stuff from the nationalists
and they're still picking stuff up from the battlefields here.
- What do we do now? - We try to find our people.
We'll...
We'll go through the brush. You all stay close.
Stay close to the ridges.
I'll go ahead on foot and scout.
- What is it? - Harry, man your gun.
Move slowly. We're being watched.
Reds have mop-up patrols about.
Yeah, so I imagine.
Hi.
Hello.
Tank?
My name's Flagler.
Tom Flagler.
Lieutenant Tom Flagler.
I'm Sergeant Kensemmit, sir.
Corporal Enoch, Private Fontenoy.
Ann Galloway.
You know anything about nursing?
I'm a biochemist. I-I studied nursing--
Bring him in.
His name is O'Hirons. Fix him up.
No, thank you, sir.
Separated from your column, sergeant?
No, sir, our tank was dug in on a forward outpost
on Hill 801.
Chinese rolled over and bypassed us.
We lost a couple of crewmen in the fight.
You're a part of a larger force?
What you see is all we've got.
We were a night combat patrol out of Easy Company.
Walked right into their big push.
This is the piece that got out.
- How's your radio? - Knocked out. And yours?
Moose, any luck?
Still on sick call, lieutenant.
- Could be fatal. - Well, stay with it.
We've been rattling around trying
to get back to Easy Company.
Bouncing off Red patrols and all
we've worked our way around till here...
...behind the Muscle.
- The Muscle? - Sullivan's Muscle.
For Captain Sullivan of Easy Company.
Hill 806.
They must have evacuated that hill.
A whole line's been broken.
The Muscle is the key to this whole range of hills.
They wouldn't bug out of that position.
Well, even if your company is there
it would be far more sensible to head south.
Easy Company needs us.
We're headed up there, sergeant.
You can come along if you want to.
If we married up with these foot soldiers, David
we'd have scoutin' and security.
And the petrol's low, we don't know where our people are, we...
We might stall out before reaching end of day.
Yes.
The sound of the tank carries, sir.
You have to put your scouts far out.
Vince, put that on the tank.
On your feet. Lend a hand here.
You ain't gonna take that beastalong.
- We're not gonna leave it here. - What do we do with it?
Its mating call carries 50 mile.
You heard the man, Felix.
You did fine, lady.
Stay with him.
They can take it, lady.
These married men can take most of anything.
A magnet. That's what it is. It's a magnet.
It will draw every Red in Korea.
Alright, knock it, Felix. You make more noise than Phyllis.
They're puttin' everything in cans these days.
What are you? Peaches?
- The name's Harry. - Harry?
Peaches, I can tell by your honest face that you was framed.
Now, tell you what, if the moon's full tonight...
...I'll slip you a can opener.
Geronimo.
Take Mark Hu. First scout, 200 yards out.
You stay 100 yards behind him. Move.
Felix and Moose, right and left flankers.
Vince, bring up the rear.
Stacey, you stick with Vince.
'Let's go.'
- Let me up out of here. - Lie back now, soldier.
- Take it easy. - Let me out.
Listen to the lady, Dan. She knows.
How did I get on this roller coaster, lieutenant?
The boys chipped in and treated you.
You caught one, Dan, but stay with it.
We'll get you back to Maggie, two-story frame house
Paterson, the whole Megillah.
Who's your lady friend?
Best-looking nurse on the peninsula.
And don't get fresh. Your old lady would knock your ears off.
Ain't it the truth?
When it's bad, talk to him about his hometown
Paterson, New Jersey.
Maggie's his wife. He's crazy about her.
- Know anything about baseball? - A little.
He's got a dream, he dreams all the time
that Boston is beating the Yanks.
If he gets violent, tell him Boston won.
He a good friend of yours?
Depends on what you mean by friend.
Well, you seem to know all about him.
Vincent Gaspari, wife, two kids, girls.
Paying off the mortgage on a small house in Los Angeles.
Likes to fish. Going to college when he's discharged.
Felix O'Hara, age 24, cotton salesmen out of Memphis.
Studied accounting nights.
Four girlfriends, engaged to three of them
probably marry the other.
Stacey Della Nueva, fair middleweight fighter.
'Worried about putting on pounds.'
Wife in Duluth.
What's your story, lieutenant?
Work that out for yourself, lady.
Didn't you come to Korea for adventure?
My job brought me here.
I had all the adventure I could handle on my back porch.
I can see why.
Where's your back porch?
Evansville, Indiana.
But you won't find it where you're looking.
You talk big city. Go to college in New York?
There are a couple of other big cities.
Like Chicago... Institute of Technology.
Not married, probably not engaged...
...by your own choice.
Well, now you know all about me too.
It's important here, lady.
I gotta know which way you'll jump when something pops.
What do you think?
You'll do.
I'll do what?
Help cover it up.
Vince, take the front.
- Steady now. I'll say when. - No, sergeant, I'll say when.
Forget my rank and sound off. You'll feel better.
A small mop-up patrol. We could have smeared them.
I'm not out to win the war here, sergeant.
I don't wanna attract attention.
You Yanks have to run the show, don't you?
So you don't like us colonials, eh?
Now, that's a crying shame.
Get ready to go.
And if that scout had got any closer
he could've enlisted.
This is as close as I like it, mister.
I'm tight.
Felix, get down there and keep an eye on them.
What am I? The only guy on salary?
This is the sloppiest battlefield.
Hold it down. Lieutenant.
It could be.
See if any of these are live, Moose.
You never could tell, lieutenant, the way the lines
work out in this mess, some are always bleedin' into networks.
But with our luck, these will probably
lead to the Russian embassy.
The poor bloke.
In this rattling tank, his wound can't close.
Don't be angry with her, miss.
She was made to kill. She does that well.
Come on, help me.
Hello, hello. Anything doing?
This is Easy Patrol 1. Hello.
Who said you could bring him down?
He's had all he can take.
That shaking, jolting tank
is tearing him apart.
It takes four tired man to carry him, lady.
I need every man and his rifle.
I don't care much what you need.
Do you want this man to die?
O'Hirons, on the stance, put him on the tank
and keep him in one piece. That's your job.
Dan's a little guy, lieutenant. I could pack him on my back.
I'll spell the sergeant.
Alright.
Mortar.
'Hello, hello, do you hear me?'
Anybody there? Hello?
Hello!
What gives?
Must be that Red patrol that passed.
I guess they ran into something down there.
A couple of plumbers. How'd they get here?
Probably the same way we did.
Fire.
Fire and move.
That would have been right on the nose.
Those Reds are darn good.
Fire.
Those guys were good.
But only second best after all.
I could cry.
Fire.
Let's go.
Picked a fine time to foul up.
I'm sorry, George.
- It must be a dud. - Ya clobber head.
If you just wouldn't be so loud.
It's all your fault, the Reds wouldn't have spotted us
if you hadn't moved. I ought to feed you to 'em.
It's my fault, George, absolutely.
But you'll get me out of it. You're the greatest.
Boy, the way you got that mortar.
Man, am I glad to see you people.
I'll bet you are. Where's your outfit, soldier?
We got shoot up this mornin'.
Me and, uh, Strangler played dead.
The Reds moved on past keepin' up the pressure. We just...
We'll have to fight them now.
Vince.
Come on.
Felix.
Go to the left.
Get down with Vince.
Spread out.
Ha!
Here they come!
Now's the time.
Point-blank, fire at will.
In!
In.
Hello, hello, anybody sober?
Good morning.
Goodnight.
Good girl, Phyllis.
You've earned your keep.
We accept your apology.
Okay, back it up.
Alright, Vince.
The tank.
Easy Company's gonna like you.
- What's so unusual? - Nothin', nothin'.
Geronimo, Mark Hu, same deal.
Find cover for the tank.
I'll take him, Moose.
Where're we going, lieutenant?
Sullivan's Muscle.
It, it's awful quiet up there, lieutenant.
There was heavy fire up there this morning, sir
and then it stopped sudden.
Like somebody pulled a switch.
If anyone knows for sure that Easy Company
isn't on that hill, speak up.
Does he know what he's doing?
He's an army pro.
And Easy Company's home, mother and apple pie to the man.
How can he be sure his company is on that hill?
The man's got an instinct about that company.
Something that comes right out through the soles of his boots
and leads him to it every time.
- He could be wrong. - Yeah, he could be.
It's not likely.
'You cotton pickin'..'
Felix, my lad, you'll catch your death of cold.
Don't make jokes, Harry.
One of my best friends is open to exposure and pain.
Would a size eight be of any help?
Peaches, you British dog.
You never told me we had the same size feet.
You never asked.
Go forward, Moose. I'll take him.
I'll carry that for you, mister.
Lady, you can have anything I've got except this gun.
Besides do you wanna lose your amateur standing?
You mean if I don't carry a gun, they can't shoot at me?
That's what the book says.
Of course, most of these people can't read.
That's a fine figure of a soldier you make.
Aren't I though? I'll tell you a secret.
It's the man, not the uniform.
Uh, so that's what it is.
Yep, thanks, old buddy buddy. I'll save you a dance.
Imported.
Just keep carryin' that tube, never mind that stuff
the gunner carries his own weapon.
You're always complainin'.
Look, you wouldn't last five minutes
in this world without me, not five lovin' minutes.
I know that, George. I don't mean anything.
I just thought you might spell me for a while.
Will ya just shut up, huh, and carry your load?
Look, Strangler, I'll look after ya.
I'll even do your thinkin' for you
but just shut up now, huh?
Hey, knock it off or keep it to yourselves.
Ya hear him? Quit complainin'.
He's always riding the little guy.
Why don't you stop him?
Every man fights his own war, lady.
And every man's afraid.
The big guy burns off by riding the little guy.
Doesn't make it right.
Strangler carries the big man on his back like I'm carryin' Dan.
Feel sorry for George, lady. He's the one that's hurting.
Don't be so sure of everything and everyone.
You could be wrong.
Can't afford to be. Not about my people.
Now take you. Like the rest, you're afraid.
To ease up your nerves, you jump at everything I say.
Alright, lieutenant, that's the rest of us.
You're the only one that's not afraid of anything.
Stop a minute. I think his bandage is loose.
Make it tight, lady.
Stop calling me lady.
- I've got a name. - But you are a lady.
- Is that thing loaded? - Yeah, why?
Back in Evansville, I used to handle fresh guys
with bare knuckles.
But a girl has to keep up with the times.
Stacey, bring him along.
We haven't got enough petrol to go on like this, sir.
Alright, we'll take the shortcut then.
Freeze! We're in a mine field.
'Hey, help me, Strangler's hurt.'
Nobody move.
Let's take him behind the tank.
You follow me. Geronimo, pick up this gear.
Forget about yourself, or what just happened.
Forget where you are, where you're going.
A man is hurt. He needs your help.
Just think about that. Nothing else. A man is hurt.
Help him, girl, help him.
I want you to fix his wound.
Only that. His wound.
Watch what you're doing, huh?
It's alright, George.
It's not her fault.
We have to figure this whole forward area is mined.
It would take us as long to back out
as is it would to probe forward.
We gotta get off this plain and quickly.
We're sitting ducks out here.
Anti-personnel mines won't hurt this tank.
There may be anti-tank mines.
That's always a possibility, sir.
- It's your party, sergeant. - I'd like to clear my crew.
You command the tank.
Harry, Devon, back here.
Get in the tank tracks. Watch your step.
Walk in the tracks. I'll drive it.
- But, David-- - You heard me.
Look after him, soldier.
Good luck.
Space out and stay in these tank tracks. Don't straggle.
We wasted too much time here already.
Alright, move her out.
Geronimo.
What's new, sarge?
I always gotta look after you.
I swear you wouldn't last five minutes in this world
without me, not five lovin' minutes.
Every man fights his own war.
Every last one of us.
You must too.
Take five.
Poor kid, I've never seen him crack a smile.
What's he got to smile about?
This is his country being chopped up.
Well, goodness glory, it can talk.
How?
It's easy, sucker. Be nice to me.
Maybe, I'll give you a break on Glory Day.
What Glory Day?
Don't you know what us Mexicans are doin' in this man's army?
- No. - Basic training.
For the Glory Day when we rise up in a body
and retake the United States.
We're going to drive you people right back into the sea.
It's going to be the Little Bighorn all over.
He's kidding, ain't he?
Don't worry, Felix, if they throw you out
we'll take you back.
Thanks, old buddy.
I just don't speak the language.
You've seen people wash before?
Yes, miss, of course.
It's funny I-I-I just never noticed
a woman bathe her face before.
Isn't anything special about it.
But there is.
The way you move, hold your hands, and touch your skin.
That's funny.
Such a small thing could give you pleasure.
There are a lot of small things I've never done.
They weren't important until now.
And I might die.
- David, why do you dislike us? - How do you mean?
Why do you dislike Americans?
That's something personal.
It does concern me though. I'm an American.
I have a sister at home. She's very pretty.
You remind me of her in some ways.
Thank you.
During the last war
she fell in love with an American envoy.
It wasn't a nice affair. It wasn't nice at all.
David.
David, that was something between a man and a woman.
No, it was typical of what was happening.
I saw them spilling over, and then drunk, and brawling, and--
A few Americans soldiers.
Only a few out of the many were like that.
If the world had been different, they'd have
rather been in their own homes--
But they were in England.
Because that was the place in the most immediate danger.
David, don't smother all of us in your hate.
I don't hate you.
Eat! It's turning into a long day.
Thanks.
We don't have much farther to go, do we?
Depends on whether we find good terrain for the tank.
- Mm-mm. - If we run into any more Reds.
I'm alright as long as I keep moving.
When I stop, it's murder.
Hey!
Relax.
I don't want our medical staff to break down.
Would you believe I wouldn't do this
for any other soldier in my outfit?
I ought to kick your teeth in
but it feels so good.
I gotta treat you right, lady.
You're turning into a real asset.
I have to admit at the beginning, I thought
you were gonna be pretty useless.
Thanks, I'll be real nice and not say what I thought of you.
All the same, it's a pleasure to soldier with you.
The rest of us expected this kinda thing.
I know it hasn't been easy for ya.
I've had it worse.
And you've had it better.
A good-looking girl like you should spend her time
sitting on a soft pillow
stringing pearls.
I'd rather tend to my knitting.
The kid has opened the doors to heaven.
We can follow him now.
Thanks for the treatment.
Thank you.
You know, I think if anybody can pull us through, he can.
Well, he certainly seems to know what he's doing.
He certainly does.
He said everything you wanted him to say.
Vacation's over. Earn your pay.
Alright, up and on.
Off your tail and on your feet
and over the hills...
He has no meaning really, does it?
The way he treats people.
Making them like him, want to follow him.
- You mean the lieutenant, huh? - Mm.
Does he really care about any of us?
It's as if we're tools that he has to keep sharp
so we'll work efficiently.
He does it pretty well, don't you think?
You really do like him, don't you?
Yeah, I like him. Keeps me alive.
Same deal.
- What is it? - Small Red convoy.
She's almost dry, lieutenant.
There ain't enough petrol to clean your watch, guv'nor.
We'll leave it.
We can't do that, lieutenant.
You make it awful tough, sergeant.
Sit here with the rest of your like. We're movin' on.
If your company is on that hill, lieutenant
Phyllis could be quite a help to them.
She can fight. You've seen her, sir.
The boys could use a 76.
Will this can run on truck fuel?
She'll run on pea soup if she has to.
It will, huh?
Hold off the shooting. We need them in one piece.
Steady now.
Uh! No, no, no.
Don't worry, George, you'll get him.
Yeah, yeah, I know, I know.
- Mine's not there. - Oh, must be stuck in the tire.
Alright, wrap it up. We've got enough.
The plumbers are gone.
Everybody, aboard, we've gotta get out of here fast.
Move out.
We'll stay here tonight and get some sleep.
Our poor plumbers.
- To keep you warm, miss. - Thanks, Harry.
Goodnight.
It blew off. I thought you might be cold.
- You need sleep too. - It will hold.
It's awfully quiet here.
It's quiet up there too.
There's nobody up there. We all know that now.
Sure, everybody knows, and you know too.
Who are you that you think you know?
So now you're like the rest of us.
You're afraid too.
Sorry, lady, I, I didn't mean to jump at you.
You're doing a good job.
You don't have to sell me anymore, lieutenant.
It's all you care about people.
The job they do for you.
You don't care about anything beyond that.
There is nothing beyond that.
Wait. No!
- 'No!' - Another foreign country, Yank?
Or is it just poor manners?
Stay away, sergeant. Stay away from me.
No, David, please, it was my fault.
'If you wanna fight him, it's for your own personal reasons.'
Don't use me for an excuse.
Geronimo, Mark Hu, get your stuff.
Reminds me some what of Japan.
Remember Corby, when some of our boys got out of hand?
- It's not the same thing. - Why not?
It's always a few.
Yanks in England or Tommies in Japan.
Restless, homesick, frightened.
A few of us always explode.
It's a soldier's trick, guv'nor. Every army has it.
- But that girl... - I'm not excusing that.
But if you dislike the man, then dislike the man.
Let every other man prove or disprove himself.
If you will hate 'em all, guv'nor
you've gotta hate the plumbers.
Those two that was lifting gas for a British hand crew
when they was killed.
'We're gonna scout the Muscle.'
Vince, give us a start and then follow.
Yes, sir.
Understand him.
I know.
A lonely man.
Every man fights his own war.
The only thing he's got is the company.
The letter on the book.
It's a sad thing that a man should only love
something that can't love back.
He's to be pitied, lady.
Stop calling me lady!
All of you, stop calling me lady
like I was some kind of a thing.
I've got a name like the rest of you.
My name is Ann Galloway.
Ann Galloway!
I'm somebody, I... I've got a name like anyone.
Oh, come on, Annie girl.
And we'll all have tea on the hill.
If you cry, Annie, we'll all cry.
You're one of us. Yeah, we all need each other.
Come on, Annie, hold tight.
Well, Annie's still a woman but Phyllis, only a tank.
The others are coming.
There's nothing up here for them, sir.
Let 'em come.
The Reds won't be back.
They're done with Sullivan's Muscle.
We've cleared our perimeter, sir.
Uh, from what we can tell
the company held till they were smothered.
The Reds carried off any prisoners and the wounded.
Looks like he's blowing up the blow out there.
Yeah.
Where do we go from here, sir?
We'll rest here, tonight. Tomorrow...
Tomorrow night, we'll try to walk back to our lines.
We won't make it without him.
He doesn't seem to care anymore.
Easy Company's finished. That's the story of his life.
It doesn't make sense.
You love the company too, you're still moving.
Yeah, love's a funny word.
Used too loosely in a world that doesn't understand its meaning.
I took great pride in Easy Company.
I had a deep feeling for the men in it.
It was close.
But I love my wife and kids.
You see it's a two-way street.
When you love somebody, they gotta love you back.
Otherwise find a new word for it or you're only kidding yourself.
Your wife's a very lucky woman.
Yeah, that's what I keep telling her.
Tom.
I'm sorry for the company.
But I pity you
'cause you're alive and carry their pain.
Life goes on, huh?
As it should. As it must.
Sometimes it tears holes in your heart
but it does go on.
You...
You have to find something to patch the holes with.
Someone.
Nothing changes the way I felt about the company.
Nothing should.
But something should replace it.
What?
I could if you'd let me.
Why should you want to?
Because I...
I-I like the way you look...
...carry yourself.
The way you talk.
The way you're, all thanks to your men...
...a leader.
I like your strength.
Yet you're weak enough to need me...
...even as I need you.
- Now take the law of average. - You take 'em.
Maybe, maybe ten lower echelon men
service one front line soldier.
Ten, count 'em.
Felix O'Hara never won anything in his life.
He never won the turkey at the Fourth of July picnic.
He could never pick the big end in the World Series Office Pool.
A real hard-luck character.
He couldn't even pull a tin whistle
out of a gumball machine.
But this...
This I win.
Mind you, ten to one odds against me being here...
Here I am.
The only prize I ever won in my life.
I though of sharing a sweepstake ticket with you but forget it.
- I am miserable. - True.
You know what I need?
A woman.
- Lush and lovely. - They don't come that ugly.
That's what I like about Felix. Unique ideas.
She's waiting for this call.
Hello.
Felix O'Hara here.
Yes, doll, as it so happens, I am available
but, uh, you have to move fast.
Yeah, roll out the wheelchair, lady.
Oh, well, you know how it is.
Every time the Pentagon gets in a jam
they, uh, they send for this boy.
And I thought our war office was fouled up.
No, I-I can't, no.
No, not in front of my staff.
'Wh.. Wh..'
Till tonight then.
Au revoir.
Felix, old buddy, has she got a girlfriend?
Yeah, she's probably a goat.
Just so she's a female goat.
I've got just the dish for you, peaches.
Hello, kitten.
This is, uh, Felix.
Felix, the cat.
'Hello, hello, do you hear me?'
CP's on the phone. I'm talkin' to people.
Hello, White 3, don't cut me off, please.
Oh, hold on, wait.
I'm Lieutenant Flagler. Don't cut me off, soldier.
This is Easy Company on the Muscle.
The Muscle? Easy Company?
The colonel's at the OP. Wait one.
Tell him to send in a taxi and pick us up.
- We made a contact, Vince. - Well, what do you know?
Yeah, still here.
- White 6, here. - Colonel, this is Flagler.
I'm on the Muscle with a small part of your friends.
One of them's sick and another one's strictly pinup material.
Flagler, I don't know how you got there
or where you found the skirt, but get this.
The Red drive bogged down about ten miles south.
Their flank's chewed up. We're coming back your way.
I want you to hold that position. What'll you need?
Any support you can give me, sir.
I'll get you some air.
Artillery's tied up but I've got a naval fire control team.
Let them know where you want your concentrations.
My helicopter's busy, but might be I could get it to you
once or twice with some ammo and a couple of men
to take your two surplus friends out.
I'm afraid that chopper will give my position away, sir.
The Reds haven't found me yet and I'd like to save
the surprise. Otherwise, I'm okay.
Alright, boy, play it smart. We'll soon be with you.
Switchboard, keep this a hotline.
Yes, sir.
Will they get us out, lieutenant?
In time. We have to hold this hill.
We? You mean us?
That's the way the ball bounced.
Moose, round up the men, everyone.
Someone has to stay on this phone.
- How is he, Ann? - Bad.
Very bad.
Help is so near.
Help is only a voice over the wire so far, Annie.
He needs a doctor.
Or a priest.
First aid or the last rites.
Good luck, Annie.
You've been told our orders.
The key to this line is the Muscle as it was before.
The Reds are being rolled back...
...this way.
Our boys are scorching their tails.
So the Reds have to take this hill in one jump or bypass it
or they'll be caught between.
Now, we'll be getting help.
Air force will be around.
And we're close enough to the sea for navy guns to reach us.
We're gonna hold.
Any questions?
Alright, then, Felix and Moose, scrounge the area.
'Pick up any weapon that'll work.'
Sergeant, dig your tank right in here.
Right, sir. Get with it.
Stacey, Mark Hu, Geronimo, in that order.
Space out. Find yourselves holes.
Geronimo, cover the front and flank.
Can you do with two men on the 76?
Yes, sir, Enoch and Fontenoy can handle it.
And set your 50 over to the right.
Right, sir.
Vince, you stay mobile.
- Cover the rear. - Yes, sir.
Air and sea will have to come through on the nose.
'Lieutenant.'
They'll be here.
The Reds overlooked a light machine gun
and two cases of mines.
We also found some loose grenades and some ammo.
Hand the machine gun over to Geronimo.
'Right.'
Keep 'em hustling.
How you doin'?
White 3, Flagler here.
We're starting to shape up. How's the fight?
'We're coming back your way.'
Yeah, it's coming close. Alert air.
'Alright, boy, play it smart, and we'll soon be with you.'
Alright, turn me over to NFC when the ships are in place.
And I'll have my switchboard operator's voice throw ya.
Roger and out.
Hey.
What is it?
Dan... he's dead.
You did all you could.
Toward the end, he thought I was his wife.
What's the matter with me, Tom?
Why can't I cry?
You've been in war, Annie.
And here, death is like rain.
Some days you have it, some days you don't.
There's nothing you can do about it.
'So you just accept it.'
- It hurts. - Sure, it hurts.
But you live with it. You taught me that.
Things seem so distorted.
Nothing seems real or lasting.
We're real, Annie. You and me.
Well, we're as ready as we'll ever be.
Shouldn't be long now.
Oh, you stay with us, baby. You're all we've got.
- Take your position, Vince. - Yes, sir.
- Where will you be, sir? - Moving around.
You know how to handle this if necessary?
Yes, sir.
Check me at intervals. Good luck.
Same to you, sir.
- How's the ammo? - It'll do, sir.
Lieutenant...
...yesterday I got up on the wrong side of the world.
I'm glad, you did.
You're a handy man to have around.
Thanks.
Thank you, lieutenant.
Ready?
Bundle up now.
Hold fire until I let go.
When does the navy get a crack at us, lieutenant?
Right after the air force.
Sailors, 15 miles from here, they can't even see us
and they're gonna drop shells 100 yards from this hole?
They'll never make it.
What do you say, Injun?
Now I know how Custer felt.
There's nobody in the back of us yet.
They still don't know we're here.
Boy, that air raid did a good job, huh?
Let's have the navy.
Here's the Charlie tear. 3-6-4-1-7-0.
Hello, here's the Charlie tear.
3-6-4-1-7-0.
364170. Roger.
Blueberry William, this is Peter Robo.
I have a fire mission for you.
How do you read me? Over.
'...sugar'
'1-5-0-0, tear 3-5-5-0.'
'Target, troop concentration, H-E, fire quick.'
'We'll adjust. Over.'
Correction, left 200, raise 100.
Correction, left 200 and raise 100.
On the nose, march it in.
Lift 100 yards at a time.
We'll say when to hold and fire for effect.
On the nose. March it in.
Lift it 100 yards at a time.
We'll say when to hold and fire for effect.
That'll chop up their main body.
And the forward elements?
That's our job.
White 3, hello, h...
The line's dead.
They'll march that barrage right in on us.
What?
Stay on that phone and keep talking.
The line's dead.
- Hello, White 3. - 'Blueberry William .'
- Hello. - 'This is Peter Robo.'
Hold that barrage, hold it.
Blueberry William, this is Peter Robo.
Cease fire, cease fire.
Wait. Out.
I got them. They're holding the barrage.
Tell them to drop it back 100 yards and then lower the boom.
Drop it back 100 yards and lower the boom.
- You alright? - Yeah. Look out!
That's it.
You alright?
Cease fire, we're here.
- It's all over. - 'Cease fire.'
Good deal and tell those ships thanks.
Anytime, lieutenant.
The army'll be joining you in about an hour. Good luck.
Roger and out.
Looks like it's gonna be a fine day.
I'd like to see it.
Well, it's another day and everybody's right back
where they started from.
Not quite. Some of us are farther ahead.
'A man tries to stay alive so he can find things to live for.'
Keep talking, I've had it.
You know, I'll bet after this deal
we don't draw another patrol
for four, maybe five days.
