Tang Weimin?

Are you ok?

I'm fine.

Why aren't you at the show?

Go back to the show.

My mom is here.

(One month later)

Huaibin Theater.

Take Tiger Mountain by Strategy.

Happy?

Not bad.

Take Qiufang to the theater.

Last time, your show of Pioneer Siblings

was delayed.

Mom, there you go again.

Are you going or not?

I am going.

Wednesday, remember?

(Theater Ticket)

Excuse me.

Jiali. Jiali.

Jiali. Jiali.

Stop.

Take Tiger Mountain by Strategy. Tomorrow.

I can't make it.

The tickets are hard to get.

I got them for you.

I have tickets.

How did you get them?

I have to take the girls with me.

I promised them.

Then take them with us.

Why don't you understand?

We can't be that close.

- Then, I... - Get out of my way.

Jiali.

Where are you going?

No where.

Wanna see a movie?

What movie?

Take Tiger Mountain by Strategy. Tomorrow.

(Huaibin Theater)

Gotta go. See you then.

See you then.

He didn't even fold his quilt.

Are you here to see me?

What's up?

Take it back.

What's this?

Your daughter is seducing my son.

I came to tell you

out of kindness.

A girl should guard her dignity

and not be so shameless, ok?

I'll ask her when I get back.

(Ticket Box)

Ticket.

Ok.

Let's get in.

Ticket.

Where is Jiali?

She took Jiayi and Jiahuan to the theater.

Jiawen, follow your dad. Hurry.

The emperor dominates his subjects.

The pagoda suppresses the monster.

Talking at midday, we have no faction.

Why are you blushing?

I'm in high spirits.

Why did your face turn yellow?

It's the wax against cold.

You work for Brigade Commander Xu?

Commander Xu's aide-de-camp, Hu Biao.

Hu Biao?

Let me ask you.

When did you start working for him?

When I was the police commissioner.

I heard that Commander Xu

has a few favorites.

Do you know where I got this?

Dad,

it's

not what you think.

Then what is it?

I...

It...

Did you make a date with him?

Sir, you've got it wrong.

I came with Qiufang.

Did you see that?

He's dating someone else.

Dad, let's go back.

Come here.

Come here. Let me ask you.

Do you like her?

Then why are you dating another girl?

It's two-timing.

Let's go.

How can you have

such a man with no backbone?

Dad!

Dad.

Do you hate Tang Weimin that much?

Jiali.

Apples and oranges.

Tang Weimin is a good guy.

Apples and oranges, seriously?

His last name is Tang.

It just doesn't work.

We don't care who you're with,

except for Tang's son.

What are you talking about?

I've never been with him.

This is feudalism.

Feudalism?

Ask your mom.

See if she agrees.

Ask your sisters.

(Liu Xiaoling, He's fifth daughter) Feudalism?

Let's have democracy, ok?

Listen up, girls.

Your big sister

wants to date that Tang boy.

Do you agree?

Raise your hands if you don't agree.

Can I abstain?

No.

Minorities follow majorities.

Write a pledge.

I won't.

Write!

Come on.

Go inside.

Jiawen, take your sisters inside.

Sit in the bed.

Jiali,

we don't want to force you.

You know our families

have unresolved feuds.

They've been giving your dad

and you a hard time.

To put it bluntly,

if it weren't for them,

your dad wouldn't have wanted a son.

Besides,

even if you get together with him,

then what?

Marry him?

What's the point of marrying him?

Do you really think you can get along

with Big Tang and his wife?

If you have any problem,

do you think that guy

would stand up for you?

I can tell you, no.

Because his last name is Tang.

He wouldn't listen to you.

He listens to his parents.

You may end up

getting a divorce.

Jiali,

I had you after ten-month pregnancy.

Think about it.

How could I not plan for you?

If you

insist on going out with him,

word may get back

to your grandma back home

and make her die of anger.

You'll be a great sinner to our family.

Changsheng, say something.

What can I say?

She's grown up.

She has her own ideas.

Your mom and I

always thought you were

the sweetest of the six girls.

You always think of our family.

We have always been proud

of you.

Our eldest daughter is so good.

She's much better than a son.

Didn't you say it yourself?

We didn't have a boy.

You said, "It's ok, Dad.

I'm sure I'll be better than a boy."

I didn't expect you

to be drawn over to their side.

You're the eldest.

How can you set such an example

for your sisters?

Jiali, when I think of you

marrying into the Tang family,

I feel like

I've been stabbed

in the heart.

Take it easy.

She'll come to her senses.

I'll write it.

(Pledge)

(He Jiali)

(I'll have no contact with Tang Weimin.)

(If not, I'll be expelled from my family,)

(give up my name, and cut off my family.)

You've got to do something.

Your son is obsessed

with He Jiali.

Short-sighted woman.

You need a plan.

A plan?

You make me a plan.

Can you force them to break up?

The harder you try, the closer they get.

It's rebellion, understand?

So you're saying

we should leave them alone

and let them do whatever they want?

Of course not.

The point is to do it right.

What?

Business.

What business?

What business?

Go home

and discipline your daughter.

That's what I want to tell you.

Go home and discipline your son.

You're funny.

Why doesn't your daughter

look at herself in the mirror?

She's so ugly.

Her face is like a pig's belly.

How can my son be interested in her?

I heard your son

wouldn't stop chasing her.

You're ridiculous.

Your daughter

gave her picture to my son.

She is throwing herself at him.

Shameless.

Say it again.

Shameless.

What happened?

Jiali, Big Tang beat Dad.

What?

Jiali, where are you going?

Take revenge.

(Self-reliance)

Big Tang,

come out!

Jiali.

Youmin, close the door!

- Open it! - Can I talk to you for a second?

What's wrong with your family?

How can you bully us like that?

Your dad is the bad guy!

- He beat my dad badly. - Youmin.

My dad is the bad guy?

If you don't make it clear,

I'm not done with you.

Jiali, Jiali!

This isn't the time for that.

It could be a misunderstanding.

You go home first.

I'll find out what happened

and meet you again.

He beat my dad and broke his head.

There's no misunderstanding.

Get out of the way!

I'm not here to see you.

I'm here to see your dad!

Jiali,

be reasonable, ok?

My dad's all bruised

and swollen.

I don't know the details,

but even if your dad

had plenty of reasons,

he shouldn't have beaten him so badly.

Nonsense!

Who beats who?

My dad got hurt, too.

Jiahuan, calm down.

Jiali, let's avenge Dad today.

A robber acts like a cop.

I'm going to teach all of you

a lesson.

- Jiali! - Someone help!

These shameless guys are hitting girls.

Aren't you the one who is hitting me?

Our families

will never make up.

Mrs Zhu.

What's up?

My mom went to Chaohu to see my dad.

She's not back yet.

I know.

What's up, Mrs. Zhu?

Qiufang,

I have something to tell you.

You must stay strong.

Mrs. Zhu, tell me.

I can handle it.

Your dad

is gone.

(Zhang Qiulin)

Qiufang.

Qiufang.

Hang in there.

Kid.

Kid.

You must hold on.

Your brother is here.

Hang in there.

Cry, if you want to.

Don't hold it in.

Qiufang,

have a bite.

I'm not in the mood.

Still, you have to eat.

Now your dad is gone.

The rest of you must stay strong.

What's your next plan?

I don't know.

I'll see what happens.

Actually, my mom

wants me to get married.

It's not hard.

You will meet the right guy.

I'm going home.

Have some food.

(Two months later)

Mrs. Zhang.

- Mrs. Tang. - Washing clothes, huh?

It's a rare sunny day.

Have a seat.

What's this?

I can't take it.

Take it.

It's not for you.

It's for Qiufang.

I want Qiufang to be my daughter-in-law.

I'll never change my mind.

- No, no. - Come on, keep it.

No, how can I take this?

Keep it.

Keep it.

Well...

Say something.

What do you think?

I'll listen to you.

I just don't want you to suffer.

I won't suffer.

Who knows what Weimin

truly feels?

Qiufang,

if he really wants to marry you,

I don't mind.

That's not what you said before.

Circumstances alter cases.

Your dad is gone.

If there's a man

in the world

who will treat you

like a treasure,

Mom would be relieved.

Mom.

Silly girl.

Mom, can I sleep in your bed tonight?

Weimin,

come out.

We can talk about this in person.

You're being unreasonable.

I want a revolution!

I want to rebel!

Why don't you shut up?

Want to rebel?

Are you still thinking about that girl?

I'll tell you what,

give it up.

If you want to be with her,

you'll be an unfilial son.

I'm not in love with Qiufang.

Marriage is voluntary now,

not arranged.

I'm going to arrange it.

What can you do?

You're not coming out, right?

Fine. Come on.

Lock him up.

Let him stay in there.

Lock him up.

(Self-reliance and relentless effort)

(Huainan Xiangyang Cooperative)

Qiufang!

Mrs. Tang.

I was just passing by.

It's about time,

so I'm waiting here for you.

Thanks, Mrs. Tang.

Qiufang,

I like you from the bottom of my heart.

To be honest,

Weimin has feelings for you.

He's just bad

at expressing himself.

He is shy.

I'm here to ask you something.

Do you have feelings

for Weimin or not?

Well, you don't have to talk.

If you do,

stand still.

If you don't,

shake your head.

Done!

You like Weimin, right?

But the problem is, Weimin...

Yes, Weimin is a little stubborn.

Qiufang,

I have a favor to ask you.

(Huainan Huaishang Vegetable Company)

Come.

(Authentic Beef Soup)

(State Run Muslim Restaurant)

Mrs. Tang came to my house the other day.

Mrs. Tang?

Weimin's mom.

What did she want?

Nothing good, I'm sure.

Propose.

Who did she propose to?

Childhood betrothal?

Another one?

She proposed to me for Weimin.

And then?

Our parents all agreed.

What about you?

You're the one getting married,

not your parents.

I don't know.

That's why I came to ask you.

You don't have to ask me.

Weimin is on a hunger strike.

He hasn't eaten for days.

Hunger strike?

You must find a way to help him.

What can I do?

Yes,

I have feelings for Weimin.

I can't forget him.

I know your....

I know your feelings for each other.

I'm not in a position to say this.

But

if it won't work out in the end,

you may as well let it go early.

You know our situation.

I really want my own family.

Jiali, I also want to tell you

that you're always my best friend.

You...

You...

Let me think about it.

Our families

will never make up.

(State Run Dongfeng Barber Shop)

(Serve the people wholeheartedly)

(Follow the Party)

(Blessings)

(Blessings)

Jiali.

What are you doing here?

I want to see Tang Weimin.

Don't worry.

I have agreed with Qiufang.

Ok.

Say what you agreed with her.

Jiali,

it's really you.

Dad.

Let me out!

Jiali.

Let's make it clear with my parents.

Tang Weimin,

from now on,

you follow your path

and I'll follow mine.

What do you mean?

Jiali,

don't you fight anymore?

This is the pledge I wrote

to my family.

I'll read it to all of you.

(Pledge)

I, He Jiali,

write down the words as proof

and swear to heaven.

I'll have no contact with Tang Weimin.

If not,

I'll be expelled from my family,

give up my last name,

and cut off

my family.

Jiali,

you must have been forced.

- Jiali. - Weimin. Weimin.

Silly boy!

Hurry.

Why are you so stupid?

It's all settled.

I've taken care of

all your concerns.

(1975)

(Strengthen ideology, harden work style)

With the development of economy,

the environment has been greatly improved.

In rural areas, large-scale construction

of farmland water conservancy

(Zhang Jianguo) and mass afforestation campaigns

have effectively improved

agricultural conditions and the environment.

In cities and industrial areas,

the government focuses

on industrial waste treatment

and environmental protection.

The general policy is as following:

(He Jiali) overall planning,

rational layout,

and comprehensive utilization.

(Long live Mao Zedong Thought) Any questions,

feel free to discuss with me.

Class dismissed.

Comrade,

is this on the blackboard?

Yes.

He...

He Jiali?

You're the guy who joined the army at 15?

Zhang Jianguo.

He Jiali.

Do you still want to join the army?

You were passionate about the revolution.

I've got a job.

What do you do?

Something with vegetables.

Grow vegetables or sell them?

Something like that.

It's important to do the logistics well.

Let's go eat at the Cafeteria.

No, I have to go home.

Ok.

- Bye. - Bye.

Jianguo,

how do we

practice the general policy?

I don't know, either.

I was late, and you're asking me?

Let's discuss it.

(He Jiali)

He Jiali!

Do you know where the girl

who was sitting here lives?

- I don't know. - No.

Sir,

do you know where

Comrade He Jiali works

or her home address?

I'll check for you. Come with me.

Okay.

(He Jiahuan, He's fourth daughter)

Who do you want?

Does

Comrade He Jiali live here?

(He Jiaxi, He's sixth daughter)

She isn't home. You're...

Zhang Jianguo of the Armed Forces Department.

Did anything happen to Jiali?

No.

I just came to see her.

Are you friends?

Kind of.

Well,

please come in.

You don't have to bring presents.

Sit down.

Sit down, please.

Comrade Jianguo,

how long have you known Jiali?

- It's... - Where did you meet her?

The Recruitment Registration.

- Where are you from? - Jing County.

Jing County? Not far from here.

How old are you?

I was born in 1942.

Ten years older than Jiali.

How many siblings do you have?

Just me.

Only child?

I'm home.

Her dad is home.

- Dad. - This is her dad.

We have a guest.

Changsheng, this is Jiali's friend,

Zhang Jianguo of the Armed Forces Department.

Hello.

- Comrade Zhang Jianguo. - Yes.

Hello.

Where is Jiali?

Go to the dam

and see if your sister's back.

She's back. Jiali.

Your good friend is here.

- Jiali. - Jia...

- Why are you here? - Jiali.

I came to bring your notebook back.

I didn't realize I'd lost it.

How did you find our house?

I asked Mr. Chen for your address.

Mission accomplished.

I'm leaving.

No hurry.

Stay for a while.

Shall we ask Jianguo to stay for dinner?

Okay.

Would you like to stay for dinner?

- Ok. - Sit down.

- Girls, go. - Sit down.

Wash the pig's feet.

Great, we can eat pig's feet today.

- Sit. - Let me help.

- Sit down. - No need. I'll go.

- You... - Sit.

Sit down.

The man

must be Jiali's new date.

We can tell, too.

Jiali is good.

One guy goes,

and another one comes.

Jiahuan, if you don't work,

you'll get nothing to eat.

It's not yours.

Why can't I eat it?

Jiahuan, stop it.

The fire's almost gone out.

Put some more wood on it.

I don't drink much.

The alcohol content is high.

Dad, I'm getting my sisters to eat.

Go ahead. Try this.

Okay.

Jianguo,

come over when you're free,

- ok? - Ok.

I think

we get along well,

right?

We kind of hit it off straight away.

Yeah, definitely.

I...

The biggest regret of my life

is not being in the army

or wearing a uniform.

We can serve the people

in any position.

You're right.

- Come on, Jianguo. - Come on.

Hit it off straight away.

I'm happy.

Look how happy your dad is.

He hasn't been so happy in a while.

We haven't even served the food

and they've almost finished the alcohol.
