We don't consider him a
suspect in the case anymore.

We saw leads and tips
drop off dramatically

after Michael Klunder,
because everybody, like us,

assumed that it was Klunder.

And so we wanted
to pick up the tips

and tell people Michael Klunder
right now is off the table,

and we're going to continue
doing our investigation.

We don't have any answers of
who killed Elizabeth and Lyric,

but that person is
still out there.

Or persons.

It's unsettling,
to say the least.

And Evansdale, you know,
it could be your neighbor.

You just don't know.

No parent should have
to go through this.

Like I wouldn't want my worst
enemy to go through this.

I never want this person to be
able to do this to another family.

And I want justice for my girls.

For the past two years, Eastern
Iowans have been waiting for answers

about who kidnapped and
killed two Evansdale cousins.

After we buried Lyric and
Elizabeth, I haven't heard

from one authoritative
figure at all.

No one. No updates, no
phone calls, no information.

There's a lot of
resources involved

for weeks and weeks and weeks
on the front end of this case,

and there were some people that worked
it you know, pretty much nonstop

for the first couple of years,
but it's hard to maintain that.

You know, at some point it
does start to slow down.

The FBI came in and they
issued a profile of the killer.

You know, one, that
they were local.

They had to be familiar
with Meyers Lake

and Seven Bridges Wildlife
Area in Bremer County.

The FBI said the killer may
be part of the Evansdale,

or surrounding area.

Probably had changed
their appearance recently.

And that the killer may have
attempted to abduct children,

or adults in the past.

It would be very, very unusual

if this was the first
time they'd acted out.

Maybe not to this degree.

But they probably had
inappropriate contact,

surely, fantasies,

with other...

juvenile, prepubescent girls.

I was doing breaking news reporting
at the Des Moines Register,

and during the evening shifts, I would
notice, you know, every few weeks that summer,

there had been news releases

coming from law enforcement
agencies around Iowa.

We'd get a news release
from one county that said,

"We got a report that a
man tried to kidnap a girl.

"She didn't go into the car."

But two weeks later, we
get another press release.

And you're like, "Okay,
this summer is there just

a bunch of different people
trying to abduct kids in Iowa?

I remember that I was
at a police department

and they had a map of the
state, and they had these tacks,

where each one of
his things happened.

A man approached two
11-year-old girls

who were walking
together in Colfax, Iowa,

and he offered both
of them $100 bills.

One of the girls did get into the car
with him and sat in the passenger seat.

He molested her and touched
her over her clothes.

And he had made her
touch him as well.

And she asked him to get out of the car
and he dropped her off at the library.

The ages ranged.

It could be as young
as six to as old

as 13 in Onawa, 220
miles west of Evansdale.

One six-year-old girl who was just
walking back home after school.

A silver Ford Focus
pulls up to her

and a man offers her a $100
bill to get into his car.

She immediately rejects the
money, runs off, goes home,

and she tells her mom
about the situation.

I was over at a neighbor's house
and her daughter come running in.

She was pale white, saying
some man tried to abduct her.

She said he had a blue
shirt, silver car.

I was just in such disbelief.

I raced out the door,

I get in the car, I
see the silver car

at the end of the block.

When I pull next to him, I go,
"Hey, you picking up kids?"

And that's when he sped off.

I follow him and I caught up to
him, and that's when I decided

like, "Hey, we got to
call the police now,"

you know. They were just,
like, you know, "Stay on him,

"don't lose him," you know, I said,
"I'm going at a high rate of speed,

"upwards of 95 miles an hour."

They're like, "Just stay
on him, do not lose him."

Finally, the state troopers
arrived and he pulled over.

No incident, no
altercations, got arrested,

put him in the cop car and
he looked like a normal guy.

The police arrested
Jeff Altmayer.

He's a 58-year-old
from Ankeny, Iowa.

When police searched Jeff Altmayer's
vehicle they found Viagra,

Xanax, they found over
a dozen $100 bills.

Looking at Jeff Altmayer, he really
wouldn't be on anyone's radar at all.

I mean, he was quiet.

He lived in a suburb
of Des Moines.

He didn't have any previous
criminal convictions.

He had a wife and two adult
children that he lived with.

He was a vehicle inspector
for an insurance agent.

And his territory that he covered
was the entire state of Iowa.

His job gave him a
huge hunting ground

to just go into all these towns
and just be completely anonymous.

There had been multiple different
cases, and with the Evansdale case,

it was two little girls who
were around the same age

of the girls that he
would try to abduct.

You know, the closest case
that law enforcement knew about

that he was a suspect in
was in Cedar Falls, Iowa,

which is just a little over a
dozen miles away from Evansdale.

It's very close.

When Jeff Altmayer came up,
it would be a logical step

to make a guy that's driving around
and trying to entice kids, um,

he would be a name
that you would want

to vet through a case like
what we have with Evansdale.

When I seen Jeff Altmayer's
name in the paper

absolutely, I was thinking,
somebody like that!

Are you guys watching him? You
know, and I'm calling them,

you know, talking
to DCI and stuff,

and, you know, ask some
questions about this guy.

The only thing that didn't make
sense was he's let these girls go.

He wasn't killing them.

These kind of people, they
might start off molesting kids,

and then it kind of progresses.

And I don't think you go backwards
after you kill a couple of kids.

I think you get more deviant.

He's gonna do it again
if he hasn't already,

and he'll do it
until he gets caught.

On February 13th 2017
in Delphi, Indiana,

another dual abduction occurred.

I'm a news junkie.

So when there is an abduction
of a child in this country,

the first question I ask myself,

"Is this our guy?"

In the Delphi Indiana case,

I read the news article,

and said this could be the guy.

Delphi is a really
nice small town.

It's a quiet place to grow up.

You know, your kids know
all the kids in their class.

Sports teams are still
big on Friday night.

It's just a good
place for families,

and nobody, really, you know,
had a second thought about it.

Oh, that was right there in
the yard. That was Mother's Day

in our matching outfits.

Our denim jackets.

This one, um, I took
sitting across from her.

It was my cousin's
bridal shower,

and when we had to find,
like, a current picture of her

even though it's with the hat,

it's, like, this is it.

Abby was, like, the
coolest, kindest kid ever.

She really cared about people,

wanted to help out with
everything and everybody.

Loved sports.

Tried everything at least once.

Stuck with volleyball
for three years,

Abigail had a lot of
really good friends.

Libby being one of them.

Liberty had just turned 14 and
Abby would have been 14 in June.

Her team photos.

There they are by each other.

There's Abby, and there's Libby.

In the short time that Libby was
here, she had a passion for life,

she wanted to get as much
out of it as she could.

She was an adventurer.

Like we'd go to a theme park,

she'd want to ride every
ride that was out there.

Until she got right up
to the edge, you know?

And then it was like,
"Uh-oh, we got to go."

On Monday, February 13th 2017,

the kids had had a long
winter break weekend,

so they got Friday
through Monday off.

Monday ended up being a
gorgeous plus 50 degree day.

Abby and Libby had stayed over
at Libby's house overnight.

They came down
9:30, ten o'clock.

Libby's sister Kelsey came in

and Libby jumped up and said,
"Can she take us to the trails?"

They got dropped off a little
after one o'clock that afternoon

for, you know, an hour long,
picture taking and hike.

The Monon Trail's main feature
would be the high bridge.

It's an old railroad bridge.

Um, it hasn't been
in service for years.

Old, broken railroad ties.

But it is a beautiful spot.

Lots of folks go out
for pictures there.

A lot of people
enjoy it out there.

They started walking the trail.

Libby's dad, Derek, would be able
to pick them up hour and a half,

two hours later, around
three o'clock that day.

When Derek got
out to the bridge,

he tried calling and texting

because the girls weren't at
the immediate pick up spot.

And they didn't answer.

Derek called me

and said, "Can you call her

and see if she
answers for you?"

So I started calling
and there was no answer.

She doesn't ever not
answer her phone.

So I'm like, there's
something not right.

So we decided,

you know what, we're
going to go to the trails.

I'm gonna walk the trails
and see if we can find her.

Mike come walking up and
he had been searching,

and I said, "It's
going to be dark soon.

We need to call the police."

I received a phone call from
Becky around 5:30 or six o'clock,

"Abby's missing,

and we're not sure
where they are."

Near the Monon High
Bridge Trail in Delphi,

two Carroll County
girls have disappeared.

Several law enforcement
agencies are looking for them.

And the search will continue.

We kind of made a Facebook post and
said, "Hey, if you happen to see

either of these kids, you know, tell
them that they're in big trouble.

We're looking for them. They weren't
where they were supposed to be."

By that time, I think
the local news crew

was starting to show up
there because it was dark.

We've seen volunteers who
don't even know the family

and people walking
onto this trail area

over the past hour or so. They
are fighting the darkness now,

using flashlights as they
continue that search.

Basically, Delphi was lit up
with flashlights that night.

Well the search was called off around
10:30 or 11 o'clock that night, um...

Officially, they said, "It's
getting dark, it's cold,

it's dangerous."

I remember coming
home to change clothes

and grabbed her jacket because
I knew she didn't have one

and she was gonna be cold
when she got back to the car.

I remember just thinking,
"Well, she's... they'll be back.

They're coming back."

I remember waking up earlier

that next morning,

on Valentine's Day 2017.

Uh...

It was the first thing
that came on the news.

The search continues
as police try to find

two teenage girls who went
missing early yesterday.

There are nearly 200
volunteers working

with police and fire officials
and others trying to help.

I jumped in a canoe, with
another volunteer fireman,

and we floated down all the
way into the city of Delphi.

A friend of mine
come running up to us

and said that they found them.

Her husband was in a
group that found them.

As I ran up to
one of the firemen

I said, "You need to take
me to Libby, they found her.

She's gonna need us," you know.

As I sat there...

The coroner...

The coroner's van

come driving by.

And that's when I
realized they were found.

Oh, it was awful.

Everything just stood still.

By the time word had gotten out

that they had been found and
they were no longer with us...

Then the rest of it just
kind of... was a whirlwind.

It just didn't seem real.

Not to anybody.

Why Libby?

Why Abby?

Why Delphi?

Words tend to escape,

during these periods of time,
because this is a classic example

and a clear example that
evil lives amongst us.

I first became aware of
Evansdale not long after.

It was probably
two or three days.

Similarities I thought were,

the girls being, kind
of, similar age wise or,

you know, an old trail system.

The terrain looked similar.

It was like looking
at our backyard.

It was like looking at
where the girls were.

Anytime anybody
does things where

it's, you know, more than one,
takes, you know, two kids,

that's where we go,

"Could that be a
suspect in our case?"

We kind of went into
overdrive, like,

thinking that could be
somebody traveling, doing it.

There were a lot of
similarities between

the Evansdale and Delphi cases.

But there was one
big difference.

And it's a case where they had
video footage, audio recording.

There's some cell phone evidence

from one of the victims
in this Indiana case

where they were able
to take a picture

of a guy walking along the trail that
they had apparently had encountered.

And there's, um, audio

where you kind of hear
part of the guy's voice,

kind of saying something
about down the hill.

Down the hill.

Down the hill.

That's the killer on
her cell phone footage.

She felt uneasy.

I think she was
uncomfortable enough

that she decided she
wanted to video him.

But it's tough.

Everybody in Indiana
dresses like that,

so I don't see
anything specific.

As poor as this picture
is, somebody knows.

And if you're watching...

We'll find you.

He has to be lucky every day.

All we've got to do
is be lucky one day.

But for right now, he better
keep looking over his shoulder.

Investigators hunting
Libby and Abigail's killer

are comparing notes with
authorities 400 miles away

in Evansdale, Iowa.

As protocol with any
investigation of this nature,

we compare to unsolved crimes

throughout the nation.

Part of that is
the double homicide

that occurred in Iowa.

At this time, I can assure you

we have spoken with the
investigators in Iowa,

and at this point

it does appear to be coincidental
that the two cases are similar.

But based on the evidence, we are not able
to connect the two cases at this time.

They think, same with ours, where
they think it's somebody local.

On that case, they think it's
a local Delphi person, too.

It has been very
frustrating over the last

five and a half years
now to still have nothing

and still not be a
whole lot farther,

we feel sometimes,
than we were at day one

and it just hurts.

It makes you angry.

While the Delphi case was in the
early stages of investigation,

back in Evansdale, the impact
of having no answers was heavy.

And had had a profound effect on
Heather and Drew's relationship.

Between Klunder,
Altmayer and Delphi.

There was nothing concrete.

All right, I'm rolling.

So my first interview with Heather
and Drew, they were together.

It's hard because...

It's just been... it's
been up and down since,

since the girls have been gone.

A lot of ups and downs,
but we're going...

staying together and
going through it.

A lot of days, he's
just kind of down.

We just deal with it different.

So I did two
interviews with them,

and then I kind
of took time off.

And when I reached out
to Drew again in 2017,

he just said... Let me know
that him and Heather had split

and that, uh, you know...

I had to film Heather
and Drew separately.

- All right, Drew, how's it going?
- Good.

Okay, so...

Mark, three rolling.

How is the family doing?

Um...

A few things have changed.

Um, Drew and I got a divorce.

We were together for 25 years.

So to me, just kind
of, I don't know,

that's all I knew, was him.

So that's been really
emotionally mind numbing.

It's just... it's really hard.

Everything just went to shit.

Even if it's your wife, it's
hard for her to understand

how you're going through
it or how you're reacting

and for a dad, it's
different than a mom.

My job, I thought, was try
to keep our family afloat.

So I really didn't
show much emotion.

Drew was a mess.

I didn't, like, hold
back my emotions,

like, I don't care.

Like, if I lose my
shit, I lose my shit.

I started throwing shit,
anything I could get my hands on.

I've done a lot of
things in anger.

There was one time, I came home,

and everything in
my yard got broke

in the middle of the night
and I just lost my shit.

I mean, completely understandable
but I didn't want the kids to see

both of us distraught and
not able to do anything,

even though I was like,
going crazy inside.

It was just too much for our
marriage to work through.

One of the first stories that I
wrote about the Evansdale case

was during the five-year anniversary
of when they had been abducted.

Even though five
years had passed,

the case was on everybody's
minds in Evansdale.

I mean, there was still ribbons hanging
up to rememberLyric and Elizabeth.

Not just in abduction
case, but in any case,

time on the front
end is your enemy.

The person who committed the crime has
more time to recover psychologically,

more time to get rid
of physical evidence.

At some point, what you see
sometimes is the reverse effect,

as time goes on, time may
work to your advantage.

It's feasible that whoever did
this told somebody some part of it

or relationships change
over time, people break up.

If there's somebody
that does know

something about a case,
sometimes as time goes by,

they're more likely to come
forward and say something.

Time can become your ally.

Belle Plaine, Iowa is
a pretty small town.

It's about 2,400 people, and it's
just 50 miles south of Evansdale.

So, in the early morning
on May 4th, 2018,

Teresa Gerleman goes out and crosses the
train track with her son, Henry Fields.

A conductor who was
in an oncoming train,

says that he remembers seeing
her going onto the track

and then grabbing Henry's arm

and pulling him onto
the track as well,

right before the train hits
and kills both of them.

Teresa Gerleman committed murder
suicide with her son, Henry.

Normally, you know,

I mean, that's just
tragic in and of itself.

But within, I believe,
the first 24 hours,

you know, there was rumblings about
connection to the Evansdale case.

What they had learned was that she had
been dealing with mental health issues.

She had been going to a local
center for people with disabilities.

What Teresa had told some
of the staff at the center

was that she was hanging
out with these guys who said

that they had murdered
Lyric and Elizabeth.

And they had given
her a six-page letter,

kind of detailing
how it happened.

The DCI, they had went

to her house after that
and searched her house,

and I know they left with,
like, a box full of stuff.

But supposedly it was a letter
written from somebody, two guys.

I don't know who
wrote that letter.

They won't say who
wrote that letter.

Most child predators
are lone wolves,

so to have possibly multiple
people involved is really odd.

If you talked to
ten investigators,

you could have ten
different opinions

and ten different,
you know, arguments,

of if it was one person,
it was two people,

so I don't think you
can take a position

that it had to be two, or
could have only been one.

I mean, until you
know what happened,

uh, you have to consider
both possibilities.

In all likelihood, I venture
to say one, but possibly two.

We can't rule that out.

I think every single scenario
needs to be considered.

They didn't find anything that was
new or revelatory in the letter.

So whatever it is, I don't know.

Is it something
that's a smoking gun?

Or is it something that's...
They know is nonsense.

I don't know. They
won't tell me.

Today marks six years since
hunters found the bodies

of two missing Black
Hawk County cousins.

Volunteers are helping
build a beautiful memorial

to remember Elizabeth and Lyric

and other young victims.

This came together with
a ton of people helping.

Three...

One.

We're open.

You know, I ask a
lot of questions,

but I don't get a lot of answers
when I talk to the police.

Eight years running, and it's still
an unsolved Evansdale criminal case.

The DCI, they just... they
keep everything very quiet,

and they're very good
at keeping secrets.

But that doesn't mean
they don't have something.

We don't know what they have.

They could have the
card in their hand

and they're just waiting for the
other cards to match up with it

and solve it. It could
be solved Monday,

I don't... Or
tomorrow, who knows?

Exactly ten years ago today,

the first reports came in that
Lyric and Elizabeth were missing.

And Drew reminds
everyone you're invited

to attend the tenth annual
ride and drive for the girls.

It's this Saturday morning
at Lofty's in Evansdale.

There's still a lot of anger
in the community over this.

Somebody knows something

- Yeah.
- And they're gonna come forward.

And, you know, I hope it does come
out what happened, God willing.

If anything, we're
getting stronger

and we're not going anywhere.

We're gonna continue to
get this case out there,

and until it's solved, we want
to bring this monster to justice.

What do you want the public
to know about what's happened

with the investigation,
where it seems to be?

One, it's being actively investigated
and two, we're not going anywhere.

It's not sitting on a shelf
somewhere gathering dust.

We regularly carve out time to
investigate this one with our team.

We've had 117 tips in
the last ten months.

With Klunder specifically,

I can't... I can't comment on a
decision that wasn't mine to make.

And I'm certainly
not gonna go...

It was... I'm not going to say
it was a right or wrong decision.

I might have landed
at a different place.

There's been three double
abductions in Iowa.

The first one was in 1991,
which is Michael Klunder.

He goes to prison for 20 years.

He gets out and then there's two
double abductions within two years.

And as soon as he dies, there's
no more double abductions in Iowa.

They came back and said they had no
evidence that Klunder was ever here.

But to me, that doesn't
mean he didn't do it.

To me, he's the
most likely suspect.

If he did come through town

and it was him that seen
them ride their bikes?

Absolutely, I think that he would track
them to a place where it was secluded.

My instincts are telling me

that Michael Klunder could
still be good for this.

I'm uneasy with ruling him out.

There's too many coincidences
between Michael Klunder

and the abduction he committed
in Dayton compared to Evansdale.

The police have never given
us the piece of evidence

that says Michael
Klunder didn't do this.

But you know, the way
they ruled him out,

they said, "We believe
he was at home,

or at work."

Michael Klunder worked for a hog
confinement company so he would travel

you know, in between hog
confinements, possibly one county,

into another county
into another county.

So if you're saying, you know, we
believe he was at home or at work.

I mean, what you're really saying to
me is that you don't know where he was.

I would love to hear from DCI

how they ruled Michael
Klunder out as a suspect.

I think they had some cell phone
tracking data or something.

You'd like to say, "Well, this person's
cell phone never hit the towers

near anyplace close to where it
happened, so therefore they're not there.

Well, that's not
necessarily true.

I could have left my cell
phone 100 miles from here.

If somebody was going
to go commit a crime,

they may intentionally
do that for that purpose,

you know, so their phone shows
that they're someplace else.

One of the big problems
with Klunder was that

they couldn't ever concretely
put him in Evansdale

the day the girls went missing,

and that was kind of the
reason why they eliminated him

as a suspect, at least publicly.

After digging around

I found out that Michael
Klunder had served time

with two convicted felons named
Troy Conkling, and Chris Ricketts.

Chris Ricketts was convicted of
multiple controlled substance violations

and possession of a
controlled substance.

Troy Conkling was convicted of
sexual abuse in the third degree

on an adult woman and
burglary in the first degree.

Both men were living in Evansdale at
the time of the abductions in 2012,

after all three men
had been released.

That's new information.

This raises a few questions, and
I'm not really sure what to believe.

If Chris Ricketts is
telling the truth,

he is saying that Troy
Conkling and Michael Klunder,

were together at the time of
the abduction of Elizabeth

and Lyric in Evansdale,
but who knows?

Drew wanted to hear Troy
Conkling's side of the story.

So he called Conkling's wife.

Hey, what's up, Bobbi?
Is Troy doing anything?

Is there any way he
would talk to me tonight?

Yeah.

Well, I mean, you guys got kids.

You can understand
where I'm coming from.

I'm just... I'm just trying to...
I've been waiting and waiting,

and I'm just done waiting.

I just wanna... kind of...

just do a phone call

never... I was never around Klunder.

Because he said Klunder
was with you that day,

that he talked to
Klunder with your phone.

I called Klunder
from my mom's house,

when I lived in Evansdale. And
then I seen Ricketts at Walmart.

But I never used...

I never let... Uh-uh.

Hell, no.

- He never talked to you about coming up here?
- No.

Not to visit or anything?

- Fuck.

Like I said, when the cops pulled
me in, it was to ask me about it.

I was like, um, "Last time I talked to
him was at my phone at my mom's house.

"If you want, you can
pull the records."

"Well, that takes too
long." I was like, "Yeah,

"but you're accusing me, so
why don't you fucking do it?"

Because they had me
in there three times.

Oh, okay. Is there a reason
you thought Klunder did it?

Klunder has priors for that.

Yeah.

Dude, it's been ten years.

- I just want to find out who killed my kid.
- Yeah.

And if it is Klunder, then
I just want to be able to,

you know, put that to rest.

Do you think he did
our girls or not?

Yes, that's... that's
my own opinion.

But yes.

- Who would he come up here

Well, at least he talked to me.

But as far as he says, that phone
call with Ricketts never happened.

The next question is,
should we call Chris?
