Hold your soul and body as one.

First, observe Heaven.

[Wu Gen]

[Xiaobangchui] Second, observe Earth.

Third, observe people.

The artwork is so bad.

And they charged me 30 wen?

Save me!

Darn it.

Master, slow down.

- Master! - Master!

Stay back!

The demon hiding in your estate is powerful

and very cunning. It's quite troublesome.

Xiaobangchui, have you found out what kind of demon it is?

I've figured it out, Master.

This trip is dangerous.

This demon is called Tanmei. It feeds on human life force.

At best, it brings illness and misfortune.

At worst, you'll see blood within ten days.

Master, it's a bad omen!

Master, please save my family!

Please save me.

Sir, please rise.

I'll do my best.

Master, no!

Defeating this great demon will cost you 30 years of your life.

It'll damage your very core.

Only a thousand-year Lingzhi can restore it, Master.

Well...

Master, here's the money for the Ganoderma lucidum.

Everyone, watch out!

Heaven and earth, source of all energy.

By this talisman, reveal yourself, demon!

Go!

Demon! There it is!

A demon! Look, right there!

Right there!

Take the money to solve their problem. Be quick.

Me again?

Who else, me?

Master, hold the fort here.

I'll go handle the demon.

- Such skill! - Indeed.

[Ancestral Hall]

By the power of the spirits, break!

[Lei Xiuyuan]

Who are you?

- You're not from Longming Sanctuary. - You are...?

No, wait.

Whether you're human or a demon,

can we talk this out?

Just find another place to stay.

Stop bothering the owners of this house.

What a fierce demon.

Bind the soul and expel evil, seal!

Sir, the demon you're looking for is right here.

I... I'm just passing by.

You menace!

You're the menace here!

Go die somewhere else!

What's wrong with you?

Master, I'll see you in the next life!

Senior Brother, you finally showed up.

[The Eternal Fragrance]

[Qingqiu]

Go away.

Master!

Master! Master?

Master!

You old geezer!

You always bail whenever there's trouble.

What kind of master does that?

You are so clever.

You'll always find a way out of trouble.

Oh,

I got this for you.

You're wasting money again!

Is it easy for us to make money

by pulling these scams?

And you keep buying stuff!

Open it up.

Do you like it?

Are you still

my stingy master

who wouldn't even buy me candy?

What are you talking about?

If you like it, wear it.

If not, I'll return it!

Xiaobangchui!

You're a girl. Don't you know

you're supposed to change in your own room?

Of course, it's not all your fault.

I'm to blame too.

I've always treated you like your senior brother.

I've practically raised you like a boy.

You keep talking about him.

But I've never seen him

since I can remember.

Did you just make him up?

Have I ever lied to you?

Your senior brother

is smarter than you. Extremely talented.

By the time he was in his teens,

I had nothing left to teach him.

Eventually,

he got into Chufeng Academy on his own.

Then keep thinking about him.

I'm going to change into my new clothes.

Fine. Then get the radish stew going.

I'm hungry.

You had money but didn't buy meat?

You're so cheap!

Add more salt. I like it salty.

Got it.

Xiaobangchui.

What now?

Nothing. Just be careful when you cook.

Don't get your new clothes dirty.

I'm not as unreliable as you.

Xiuyuan, put me down. Just leave me behind.

Don't talk nonsense.

[Lu Shanhua] We said

we'd find a place where no one knows us.

We can farm or fish.

Just never live a life on the run again.

You can't leave me.

[Young Lei Xiuyuan]

My spirit meridians are completely broken.

I don't have much time left.

I can't drag you down.

Isn't that what family do? Drag each other down?

When Gaolu fell,

our whole family

went down together.

We made it out and survived this long

because heaven wants us to live.

Soup's ready!

Why are you using an evasion spell at home?

Are you hiding money or something?

Master?

Master?

Where's Master?

Master?

Master!

Master!

Xiaobangchui,

I must leave for something urgent.

Can't take you with me.

Go to Chufeng Academy to find your senior brother.

I've included his portrait with the letter.

He seems quite capable.

You can't go wrong with him.

Why suddenly ask me to find some senior brother?

You didn't even take your bag?

He left all the money to me?

Master.

Master!

Master!

Master!

You old geezer!

You abandoned me.

I can't live on my own!

I might as well die!

Help, Master! I'm dying!

That heartless old geezer!

Silly me.

That old man always fears death. He won't come save me.

That's not right.

If he's scared of dying,

he should hide with more money.

Unless...

Unless he ran into some life-threatening danger

and knew he probably wouldn't make it?

That's why he left me behind?

Master... Master's in trouble.

Demon.

[Nine-Tailed Fox, Riyan]

A fox spirit!

You're hurt?

[Immortal Dongyang, Wuyue Court]

[Zhenyunzi, Xingzheng Hall] Why is there a mortal in Qingqiu?

[Lady Longjing, Huolian Abbey]

It's a child.

Who are you?

Why are you alone in this deep forest?

Whose blood is this?

Mine. I got hurt.

Tell me, what did you see?

So cold. He's casting a spell on me.

Mr. Zhenyun,

she's just an ordinary person.

She can't handle your verbal command spell.

Don't be scared.

Where's your family?

Why did you come into the mountains alone?

I... I live up in the mountains with my master.

But my master disappeared.

I've been looking for him everywhere.

I don't know... where he is.

Who's your master?

Wu... Wu Gen.

Wu Gen?

There are countless reclusive cultivators in this world.

This girl has a pure aura.

She must be a good person.

Don't be afraid, child.

Did you see a white-furred fox spirit

pass by just now?

Where did it go?

There!

A white shadow

just flew that way.

Tell me, where's the fox?

I don't know what you're talking about!

Let me go!

What about Riyan?

What Riyan? I don't know anything about that!

I don't know who Riyan is!

Speak!

If you kill me,

you'll never find out!

Speak!

This girl is looking for her family.

Please spare her.

Please, have mercy.

Let me go.

Sir, your vital energy was already unstable.

And now you've been badly wounded by the fox.

If you don't retreat to heal soon,

you might go berserk.

Thanks for the warning. I'll spar with you another day.

Sir,

um, could you

take me to Chufeng Academy?

Shanhua.

Shanhua.

You really think you can escape?

Gaolu fell seven years ago.

Why is Longming Sanctuary still hunting us down?

Eighteen years ago,

that traitor stayed in Gaolu's palace for several years

and then vanished without a trace.

Tell me!

Where is that traitor hiding?

I don't know what you're talking about.

You'll find out once you get to Longming Sanctuary!

Xiuyuan!

- Shanhua. -Are you okay?

Elder Zhenyun?

Longming Sanctuary is hunting these Gaolu remnants.

Is Xingzheng Hall going to interfere?

You actually got yourselves this beat up by some small fry

from Longming Sanctuary.

What do you mean?

Is Xingzheng Hall

really going against Longming Sanctuary?

His heart meridians are damaged.

Ordinary medicine won't work anymore.

Senior, please save Shanhua.

Gaolu fell seven years ago.

Why are Longming Sanctuary's people

still hunting you?

I dragged Shanhua into this.

It's because... I have a spiritual root.

They won't let me go, fearing I'll become

a threat later.

You are incredibly talented.

You mastered the basic spells Lu Shanhua taught you

and formed your own style.

What a pity.

Xingzheng Hall has made its stance clear.

We won't interfere in Gaolu's affairs.

I'm not asking to join Xingzheng Hall.

I only ask you to save Shanhua.

Shanhua's life is hanging by a thread.

To save him,

we need the power of the nine-tailed fox.

Nine-tailed fox?

What a shame.

Go on.

Her?

Find this tomboy

to track down the nine-tailed fox.

Remember, do not alert anyone else.

Especially the immortal sects.

[Lugong Town]

Little trinkets!

Please take a look. They are for blessings. Really nice.

Wish you many children and great wealth.

The ancestral hall in Lugong Town ahead

is the registration site for Chufeng Academy.

I'll only take you this far.

Mr. Dongyang, you're leaving already?

Then I won't even have anything to remember you by.

Here, take this evil-warding bead bracelet.

Even if you can't get into Chufeng Academy,

with this bracelet,

you should be safe.

Thank you, Mr. Dongyang. You're so kind.

Then why not help me all the way?

Any tips

for getting into Chufeng Academy?

How can I get in smoothly?

I wouldn't know.

Just work hard.

Then... how do you grow that gourd?

Can I grow one?

If I miss you, how do I find you?

You are so good to me.

How can I ever repay you?

Just like Master,

always disappearing into thin air.

Mr. Dongyang, until we meet again!

I'll find Senior Brother first, then look for Master.

Chufeng Academy, here I come!

Make way!

You again, you menace.

What do you want?

I have no money.

As for looks... I've got even less of that!

Where did he hide?

He? Who?

He...

He's in...

He...

He's in...

Trying to mug me?

Come any closer

and I'll gouge your eyes out!

Where's my brother?

Did your assassin accomplices take him?

Tell me!

Wait, are you crazy?

Your brother's missing. Why are you coming after me?

My master's missing too!

You menace.

You showed up out of nowhere in Dongming Town.

And now you've followed me here.

Did you harm my master?

Where did you take him? Tell me!

You're playing the victim.

If those assassins aren't your accomplices,

then you are Wugou's spy.

Wugou's spy? What's that?

I don't have time to waste on you!

Your taste

Name?

Hometown?

Which sect are you from?

My name is Xiaobangchui.

I'm from Qingqiu.

Since you are from Qingqiu, do you have a master?

Have you learned any basic spells?

I have a master.

I've learned some talisman drawing.

Talisman drawing is just a minor trick.

Nothing impressive.

[Mr. Li, Elder Zhu, Mr. Cheng, Chufeng Academy] My hometown suffered a flood.

All my siblings starved to death.

I stole a bun

for my severely ill parents.

But they held my hands tight,

refusing to eat the bun till their last breath

They told me

I had to try my best to get in here,

so I'd never suffer from hunger and cold again.

Only then

can they rest in peace.

Poor child.

Elder Zhu,

should we give her the only special-hardship

exam token?

Hold on.

[Mu, Chufeng Academy] There is someone here

who might be even worse off.

The fiend.

Why is this menace here too?

Mr. Zuo said

this selection of disciples is special.

So he sent me to assist the three of you.

With you here, we'll have a much easier time.

Come, have a seat.

Do you know this young man?

No.

I just saw him being chased

by some Yue State guards outside the town.

I couldn't stand it,

so I brought him here.

I won't interrupt your discussion.

So I'll just...

No rush.

To be fair,

let's hear what this young man has to say first.

My name is Lei Xiuyuan.

I live in Xigu Village, Luoxia Mountain.

Xigu Village? You're from Xigu Village?

Lei Xiuyuan,

why do you want to apply to Chufeng Academy?

These are the names

of all 161 people in Xigu Village.

My family and villagers

were slaughtered by evil spirits overnight.

I have no skills.

Only by getting into the academy and mastering spells

can I have a chance to avenge them.

He's obviously lying. The masters won't believe him.

Child, stand up.

Five years ago, Xigu Village was struck by a demon disaster.

Several immortal sects sent people to investigate later.

No survivors were found.

Then how did you...?

That night, I was knocked into the river.

My parents shielded me with their bodies.

I hid underwater, not daring to make a sound.

I watched as the whole village was thrown

into the river, one by one.

I am just like those 161 dead people!

I merely survived.

Impressive. He acts even better than me.

Later, I finally found those killers.

They could use spells.

They are disciples of Longming Sanctuary from the Wugou State!

Lei Xiuyuan, do you know

that mortals get severely punished for slandering immortal sects?

Every word I said is true.

This applicant can testify for me.

Come here.

Let go.

That day, I was hiding in a house in Dongming Town

and ran into Xiaobangchui.

The assassins were chasing me.

Thanks to Xiaobangchui's help,

I managed to escape.

So, Xiaobangchui,

is what he said true?

Yes, yes.

Those people were ruthless

and struck to kill.

And they all used spells.

Don't you have a brother?

Where is he?

My brother was a disciple of an immortal sect.

He protected me for years

but got into trouble and was hunted down.

Now he's missing.

The world is vast,

but there's no place for me

unless I get into this academy.

I don't ask for your pity,

only for a chance to take the exam.

I'd be forever grateful.

I never expected

we both have such tragic backgrounds.

But look, I dress worse

and live worse than you.

Plus, I saved your life before.

I'll always remember your kindness in saving me.

I'll repay you someday.

Not "someday". Do it now.

This is all I have.

Hope you don't mind.

If you try to steal my spot again,

I'll skin you alive!

I have a blood debt to settle. Please let me have this.

- I don't want it. - Take it.

No. Don't force it on me.

- No. - Here.

I said no. Let go!

I didn't even know my parents

left me so much money.

I'm leaving.

Master,

it's fine that you abandoned me,

but at least let things go smoothly for me.

Now that jinx stole the exam token.

It cost me so much money to register.

With that evil-warding beads blocking spiritual detection,

I'll just capture her first.
