"Blank space" is one of my favorite moments

in the show every night because the song is essentially about

a girl who comes off incredibly charming and is very seductive

and... and pulls people into her world,

and then she proceeds to just go absolutely psycho.

We wanted to kind of replicate the video,

and we wanted it to be a performance showcasing me

and all these supposed ex lovers who I've terrorized and ruined

and, um, become absolutely obsessed with.

And we wanted to... to watch that play out on stage.

The media kind of got onboard with this idea

a couple years ago that I'm this player

and I'm a serial dater

and I just am constantly dating for sport.

So when I wrote "blank space," I just thought,

"all right, if they want to play this character,"

if they want to paint this picture of this girl

who's just picking up men left and right

and, you know, this whole imagery of this

jet-setting, um, tragic mess that I apparently am,

cool, I'll write a song from that perspective

"and see how you like it."

And it ended up being the biggest song I've ever had.

is that every person in the audience probably know

A few years ago, I was at the grammys,

and I was, um, lucky enough to be nominated

for album of the year for my last album, "red."

The announcer said, "and the album of the year goes to"

'random access memories'... Daft punk."

Which sounds a lot like "red,"

so for about two seconds, I thought we had it,

but we didn't, and I ended up going home, like,

thinking a lot about everything.

Thinking about where I was going, what I'd been doing,

how I felt like I... I needed to change something.

And I went to bed,

and I woke up at 4:00 in the morning,

and I knew what the next album needed to be.

"I'm gonna completely switch gears."

It needs to be called '1989.'

everything about this new phase and this new chapter

has to be different.

Oh, it's good to be back in Australia.

I've spent a lot of time here.

I always come to see you, and I'm always going to.

And, uh, because I've been to Sydney so many times,

I'm very well aware of the fact that there are a million things

I'm hearing people screaming every single word so loudly.

And let me tell you why that makes me so happy.

Because that... That kind of behavior

is free and uninhibited and warm.

And the way you've treated us is so open and welcoming.

You know, these days, there are millions of ways

for people to tell you how to be, how to act in public,

what's cool, what's not, what's beautiful, what's not.

And it's really easy to become completely preoccupied by

the idea of trying to be cool.

My band had been with me for years.

Um, some of them had been with me for 10 years,

and they're an amazing group of musicians and singers.

They can learn a song within less than an hour,

and this tour has been unbelievable

because I got to see them really flex their muscles

in terms of how quickly they could learn something.

someone else's song,

regardless of what genre they fell into.

And it's really exciting to be around people

who were so focused,

and we all ended up

on the stage we wanted to be on.

Every night before the show,

the band and the dancers and the singers and I...

We all get together in a huddle.

It's a way for us to all get together

and have somebody from the group make a speech.

It's really amazing to get to hear

from everyone who we perform with

because you hear their life stories,

you hear, sometimes, funny stories,

you hear what's motivating them lately,

and it just makes you realize

that you're performing with people

who have been dreaming about this

their whole life.

The same way I started writing songs when I was 12,
