To shoot two people
six times each--

I can't even climb
into that darkness.

The creepy dude was
most likely right there.

They assume that the
murderer knows the victims.

Everyone is a suspect.

Gabby Petito
never goes outside.

Did Brian Laundrie
have something

to do with the disappearance
of these two girls?

This blew my world apart.

I decided that I was
actually going to try to solve

the crime myself.

And I was relentless
to get answers

and to even enlist
Dog the Bounty Hunter

to come and help me.

I said, please, please,
please come help me.

There's a body in the creek,
and he's screaming.

No, what the fuck
are you doing?

Get back in your car.

And she kept repeating,
"He's going to kill me."

And he shoots my daughter.

That's about the
only time in my career

that I just wanted
to shoot him.

You can run.

You can't hide.

The skies in Moab
are phenomenal.

They're just phenomenal.

The landscape is majestic.

We have strange,
rare mountain features.

You feel like you're at a
foreign planet, like Mars.

It is one of the most
beautiful places to visit.

So as much as I loved
Moab's landscape,

I did not like Moab's energy.

I'm Sean-Paul Schulte.

Kylen was my lovely daughter.

She was probably
17 years old

when she moved to Moab.

She came to Moab
to be with me, her dad,

and she really started
to grow and blossom.

She grew up in a rural area
with very few close friends.

And her best friend probably

was her little brother,
Mackie.

In 2015, Mack was killed
by one of his friends

who shot him
through the window.

Mackie boy was rapping on
his window to come sneak

out and come play with him.

His friend thought
it was a bad guy

and took the gun out from
under his bed and shot

at the head in the window.

Kylen came there to heal.

And she worked at the
till, at the front desk,

of this health food store.

And as the guests
would come in,

they'd see this big,
beautiful, tall girl

with dreadlocks sticking up
and a big, beautiful smile

on her face.

I was there the first
day Kylen saw Crystal.

So Crystal was shorter

and older and leathered up
and rode a Harley.

And Kylen was tall
and young and beautiful.

Kylen looked at me,
and she said,

I just want you to know that
Crystal and I are together.

And I had already knew.

I already saw this blossoming.

I saw this happening.

I'm just-- I'm
thrilled to death

that you two are in this
wonderful

relationship together.

And they were just--

wow, thanks, Dad.

There was an old Moab
that wasn't so accepting,

and then there was the
rest of us that were.

I would watch them go
into Village Market,

and they would be dancing and
holding hands and twirling.

Oh!

It's pollen.

OK.

The pollen is everywhere.

They got married in a big
giant tree house in the forest.

I was their best man.

I was their bridesmaid.

I was the ring bearer.

They called each other
big wife, little wife.

There was a stark
difference between them.

They were happy.

I mean, you could
see it in their faces

when you saw them in town.

Kylen had a job at
the Moonflower Co-op,

while Crystal was
an assistant manager

at the local McDonald's.

And even though many would
consider their lifestyle

to be, like, subpar
on the economic scale,

they seemed very happy.

And money did not
really resonate

to them as a necessity.

Moab seemed to
attract people who

maybe weren't what we
think of as ordinary

or people who fit in,

a lot of people there who
were living in the van life,

not very materialistic, almost
like a little hippie community.

People looked out
for each other.

They cared about each other.

When they couldn't
afford a place,

that didn't bring them down.

Kylen always had a bunny.

Kylen loved bunny rabbits.

If you looked at her
name tag at work,

you'd see she drew a little
bunny rabbit next to her name.

They were happy
and excited and-- and--

and had fun living out of
their van up on the mountain.

But I believe that if they
were behind a locked door,

they would still
be with us today.

I got a call from
Moonflower Co-op.

She says, Sean-Paul, I don't
know how to tell you this,

but Kylen has pulled
a no-call, no-show.

She's missing.

She didn't show up to work.

And Kylen never misses work.

And she said, wait,
Sean-Paul, there's more.

Crystal-- because when
Kylen came up missing,

we called McDonald's.

Crystal has missed two shifts--

no-call, no-show.

I called the
police, and I said,

you need to put an
APB out on my girls.

And they said,
there's already an ATL.

And I said, what's an ATL?

They said, attempt to locate.

My name is Nate Whitney.

I work for the Grand
County Sheriff's

Office here in Moab, Utah.

We cover the Grand County area.

Overall, the county
is fairly large.

It's 3,600 square miles.

Crystal and Kylen
had told people

that they worked with
that they were camping

near the Warner Lake camp area.

Warner Lake is a 30-,
45-minute drive

from center of Moab.

It's just a vast area,
and people have a hard time

understanding that there's
just so many places where

these girls could have been.

I immediately went online,
and I started posting,

"All my Moab friends, keep
your eyes out for the girls,

"for the girls' van.

They were camping
up on the mountain."

I mean, Sean-Paul put
the post up on August 17th,

and I read it that
morning as I was going

through my regular routine.

And I instantly started
being told, you have to go.

You're going.

At the time, I called
it source energy,

because it's not like
I'm hearing a voice.

It's more of a--

a gut feeling sensation.

So I finally called
him and I said,

Sean-Paul, is this normal?

Do the girls normally
no-show, no-call?

And he said, no.

And I said, do you know
where the girls are?

And he said, no, I just know
they're up in

the La Sal somewhere.

Cindy said,
me and all my doggies

are getting in the car,

and we're going
up on the mountain

to try to find the girls.

These girls do not
camp in a campground.

They'll be in the
woods somewhere.

And he told me, you know,
look over ravines, look over

cliffs, look for
broken taillights,

look for pieces of
bumper, you know.

So I said, I will search all
day until I run out of gas

or until it's dark.

And she would stop
and show them the--

the pictures and say,
have you seen these girls?

They're in a silver
Kia, a minivan.

And I passed Whispering
Oaks, and shortly after that,

I went over a cattle guard.

And that's when I saw
a flash of silver.

And so I stopped my car
in the middle of the road,

and I backed up
and looked again.

And I'm like, oh, there's
a campsite down there.

I started feeling like
something was wrong.

And I needed to hurry.

And that's when I
called Sean-Paul.

And as I was approaching,
I was like,

oh, it's a silver Kia.

And then I turned around
and I saw there was a tent.

And I said,
do you see the girls?

And she said, no.

I then walked over
to the pet enclosure

and saw that the
bunny was inside.

The bunny had no food
or water.

And at that point,
I started crying.

And then she went silent.

And I was like,
Cindy, are you OK?

That's when I saw
the stream.

And I looked to the
left, and I see a body.

Of course, I'm losing it.

I'm in Montana, distraught.

I'm on the floor like a puddle.

I don't know what's going on.

So I'm saying to myself,
no, this is-- the police

are supposed to do this.

I'm not supposed to do this.

Um--

sorry.

So I finally tell him that
there's a body in the creek.

And he's screaming.

She said, I see a body.

And I was like, no--

I fell on the ground.

I was crying.
I was screaming.

And he's going, is it Kylen?
Is it Crystal?

And I don't want
to tell him it's Kylen.

I know it's Kylen because she's
so much bigger than Crystal.

I tell him I don't know.

And I look again, and, uh--

and then I have to tell him
that it's his baby girl.

And then I said,
oh, my word, Sean,

I have to call the police
back and let them know.

Kylen was found face down in
the-- a small stream nearby.

And Crystal's body was
found a dozen yards--

or meters-- further away.

I said,
I think she's that way.

I don't know why I knew
where she was, but I said,

I think I know where she's at.

As soon as Cindy Sue
called 911

and let us know that she
had found the girls,

I was immediately called up
and dispatched to the location.

Myself and former
Lieutenant Kim Neal

started processing the scene.

We had to do that fairly
quickly because there was

a big storm head coming in.

We were worried it was going
to wash away

even more evidence.

There was blood underneath
the mattress in the tent,

but not next to the mattress.

And then I remember
wondering why one body was

in one location of the creek
and the other body was in

another location of the creek.

They both had been
shot five times.

According to their
forensics, they determined

that the two girls were shot
while in their tent,

but their bodies were
found outside of the tent.

We were behind the
eight-ball the entire time.

It turns out that the homicide
happened on August 14th.

The bodies weren't
discovered till August 18th.

We were already trying to
make up for that time gap.

We were also fighting
weather conditions.

There was a
reception center nearby

where the girls were camping.

And they had
surveillance footage,

and they can see
vehicles coming and going

up and down the mountain.

One of the vehicles that stood
out to them as being unusual

was a black Yaris.

The detective watching the
footage of all these cars going

on the La Sal Loop Road
picked out the black Yaris,

and for some reason,
it stood out to him.

It didn't fit in his mind,
and he stuck with it.

According to law
enforcement, the girls

got home to their tent about--

shortly after 1:00
in the morning.

By 11:00-something
that following morning,

the surveillance footage
nearby

at the reception center,
you can hear gunfire.

The night when Kylen
and Crystal disappeared,

they went to Woody's Tavern
for drinks.

And there was
surveillance video.

And a lot of interest
came from that

because that was one
of the last times

that the girls
were seen alive.

Crystal and Kylen

drive in
to Woody's World-Famous Tavern,

which is a local hangout
for a lot of people.

They come in,
according to the bartender,

you know,
once or twice a month.

They're not big drinkers.

They're really just there to
socialize with their friends.

Friday the 13th,
the girls met up with

some of their workmates
to have a beer

and celebrate the weekend.

They reported
to their friends

that there was a creeper
dude camping next to them.

And they said

there was a creeper up there

who didn't talk to them,
but was too close to them

and made them uncomfortable.

This is when they mentioned
to people that they're

with about this creepy guy
who has not only camped

uncomfortably close,
but had actually

walked through their
campsite and appeared

to be looking around.

This is the way into camp.

Kylen and Crystal were
up at their campsite

up on the mountain,
and somebody

had howled like a wolf,
and Crystal howled back.

He had kind of ended up
camping what they thought

was too close to
them, because there's

a million acres out there.

We don't have to be
right next to each other.

This is where Crystal
and Kylen camped.

And the creepy dude was
most likely right there.

Their friends were like,
oh, Kylen and Crystal,

don't go back up there.

And the girls were like, we're
not really worried about that.

There's two of us
and one of him,

and it's not that
big of a deal.

And-- and back up the
mountain they went.

It was the last
time anybody saw them.

Anytime somebody
is murdered,

you look at the family,
you look at friends,

you look
at the person who found them.

You look at everybody
as if they could

potentially be a
person of interest

until you can
prove they're not.

Given that we had no motive,
we had to look at all motives,

for lack of a better term.

There were
so many tips from--

from people from all walks of
life saying, look at this guy,

look at this guy,
look at this guy.

And I'm sure they
were just being

pulled in multiple directions.

Like, which way do we go?

Right away,
clues came in

about Adam Pinkusiewicz.

The clues were
from Crystal's workmates

from McDonald's.

Adam and Crystal worked
at the same McDonald's,

but Crystal was
the morning shift,

Adam was the night shift.

They never worked at
the same time together.

And Adam had recently been
fired from McDonald's.

He was a disgruntled
coworker that had

incidences at the workplace.

He was even given a warning
during a confrontation

where he threatened to harm
somebody, the manager at work.

There were thoughts
that perhaps he

had grudges against his boss
at McDonald's because she was

a lesbian, and that he
had problems with Crystal

because she was
a lesbian and she

was getting special treatment.

Shortly before the
murders happened,

he's being told at one point,
you've got to work faster.

And so I think his response to
that was, it's not me, right?

It's not the fact that
I'm not working faster.

It's the fact
that I'm not a lesbian.

I'm not these women.

They're, in some ways,
discriminating against me

because of who I am.

And he's a gay man,
and that's what he resents.

There was a huge red
flag about this Adam,

and one of the clues said he
left town without picking up

his last paycheck.

Who doesn't pick
up their final check?

We continually
tried to contact Adam,

but we never got
anything back.

Talking to Adam's
other coworkers

at other establishments,
they described

Adam's car as a
white hatchback,

not a black hatchback.

And because Adam Pinkusiewicz
had left town so early,

they had no idea
where to look for him.

But at the same
time, he kept getting

pushed to the back burner.

There was such a wide
spread of different suspects,

everything from drugs,
to debt, to the creeper

dude, and even others.

For the funeral, it took
us 11 days to get the girls.

And we were not allowed
to have an open casket.

The girls had been exposed to
the elements,

the mountain, the rain,

animals, the gunshots.

I never got to see her,
period.

She just was gone.

When your children
are murdered,

you're absolutely
lost in the dark.

Law enforcement has
a tendency to

button up and not share
information.

So even though they
may be working hard,

that doesn't always translate
well to a victim's family

because they're not seeing
what they're doing every day.

So the day after the funeral,
I said,

I've got to go to Moab.

I decided that what
I was going to do was,

I was actually going to try
to solve the crime myself.

I'm not going to let
the crime of the two

hippie lesbians on the mountain
get swept under the rug.

I think that the kind of
people that maybe might know

what happened
are not the kind of people

who are going to go into the
police station and give clues.

These are the
kind of people who

are-- kind of roughnecks
off the street

are who I need to talk to.

And so I thought,
I'm just going to--

I'm going to set
up a clue booth

every morning at 9:00.

And I'm going to take in
clues from the community

and see what happens.

You want all the
help that you can

from civilian population,
to law enforcement,

to anybody else,
private sector investigators.

You want all that
help that you can get.

The thing that Sean-Paul
did that we really liked

is, people would come to him
who weren't comfortable coming

to talk to law enforcement.

Every once in a while, he was
able to bring us something

that we were able
to look further into.

I'd set up here every
morning from 9:00 till

noon to do the clue booth.

Folks would come and
tell me real clues.

I would basically
have the girls' Harley

jackets here, and their boots.

I'd have some rocks and some
paintings and some flowers

and a couple things
hanging up, you know?

And people were used to seeing
my books, my pamphlets, my clue

cards, and my pencils,
and of course, my phone,

because I would be texting--

or literally messaging
the sheriffs as they

were giving me the clues.

Basically, wait there all
day, all afternoon, for someone

to come forward with any tip
of any kind at a park bench

to help solve his
daughter's murder.

Over that time frame between
the murder and the time

I came on board, he had already
amassed 37 different suspects.

And then, from noon
till 1:00 every day,

I would do press.

There's not just one
escape route through town.

He didn't go through
town and stop and gas

up and get caught on video.

He may have.

I just remember being
amazed at his strength

and, uh, resilience.

I personally do not believe
that Kylen and Crystal

are resting in peace.

I was just astonished

by his sheer determination

to show up there every
day and sit in that park

and take clues
from anybody that

would bring him information.

It boggled my mind.

There were so
many tips from--

from people from all walks of
life saying, look at this guy,

look at this guy,
look at this guy.

I kind of had to weed
through and learn how to be

an investigator and figure out
what was pertinent to right

here, right now and what was an
event that happened nine years

ago that probably didn't
have anything to do with--

with our case at all.

But, uh, this is where
I sat every morning.

This is where I was sitting,
taking in the clues.

Every day,
clues would come in.

So wait till you hear this.

Crystal came to the Moonflower
to pick up Kylen after work.

And Crystal would park the
van in the alley facing

the post office and the
coffee roastery place

across the street

that while they were
sitting in the van,

they saw a guy punch
a girl in the face.

The guy tried to
drive off in the van,

and the girl, like, dove in
the window to go off with him.

The guy on the curb
right next to them

was already calling
911 and saying,

hey, we just saw a guy
punch a girl in the face,

and off they went around
the corner to the north.

It was Brian Laundrie
and Gabby Petito.

Gabby Petito
never goes outside.

They had observed Brian
Laundrie and Gabby Petito,

and they had observed
Brian Laundrie being

abusive to Gabby
Petito, which would

have been extremely upsetting.

The couple had been
on a cross-country van

trip when she
disappeared in August

and he returned to Florida.

Brian Laundrie
and Gabby Petito

were in Moab
the exact same weekend.

Brian's stretching,
doing some morning yoga.

And Kylen
and Crystal saw them

interact with each other right
in front of Kylen's work.

You can't keep chocolate
in Utah, not in July.

Brian Laundrie
was on our radar

as far as me trying to
figure out who did this.

When Brian Laundrie
was first brought up,

if you get any information
that might pan out,

you always have
to go and you have

to either eliminate somebody
as a suspect or build--

or build evidence
to support the fact

that they are a suspect
or a person of interest.

Crystal decided to call 911.

We know that down the road
that led to law enforcement

initiating a traffic
stop of Gabby Petito

and Brian Laundrie
outside of town

as they're headed towards
the Arches National Park.

Domestic violence
in the state of Utah

is a misdemeanor offense.

And it's usually handled
at the patrol level unless

there's a serious bodily
injury that's occurred,

in which case-- and sometimes,
I get called out on those,

and other times I don't.

That being said, this case
was handled by the Moab

City Police Department.

So it really added to the--

the flurry of rumor that--

and suspicion that maybe
Brian Laundrie was responsible

for Kylen and Crystal's
death, because his girlfriend

goes missing,
he was also in town,

these two girls go missing.

So it just seemed like there
was a nexus between it all.

Did Brian Laundrie
have something

to do with the disappearance
of these two girls

and their subsequent murder?

It really did kind of inspire
these theories that somehow,

maybe Kylen and Crystal
had been the ones to call 911,

that Brian Laundrie was aware
of this and that he had,

you know, gotten out of--
out of his hotel the next day

and gone on some
vendetta against

the people who had called 911.

So we didn't know if
it was Brian Laundrie.

Keep in mind now,
I had my clue booth,

and everything's happening
all at once here.

All of these things
intersected and happened

at the exact same time
as my girls went missing.

They had the
cell phone records.

In the cell phone data,
we were able to confirm

that Brian Laundrie and Gabby
Petito were not in the area

at the time of the homicide.

It is very coincidental.

But you know, it's--

coincidences happen every day.

A discovery today
in the Florida nature

reserve where Brian Laundrie
was believed to be hiding.

Investigators
found what appeared

to be human remains,
along with personal items,

such as a backpack
and notebook

belonging to Brian Laundrie.

God forbid your
children are murdered,

this is what you're
going to expect--

cold faces,
no answers, a lot of time,

and a whole bunch
of questions.

We decided to
just hit everything

from the very beginning
really hard again.

And we ended up
getting a warrant

and seizing Cindy Sue's phone.

There's a knock at the
door, and my dogs, of course,

go crazy.

There's three of them.

And I can't get
them to calm down.

And there's three officers
standing at the front door.

And so I get the dogs out of
the way and I get outside.

And I-- you know,
they introduce themselves.

They're from three
different departments,

these three officers,
and three separate cars.

And I, you know,
was, what's going on?

And they said, well,
we're here to serve you

with a warrant.

And I-- I was like, what?

For what?

Well, you're a suspect
in a murder in Moab.

I said, I found them;
I didn't kill them.

They said, no, this says
that you're a suspect

and we're here
to take your phone.

Why are you doing this?

When we seized
Cindy Sue's phone,

it was to make sure that
what she had told us

about her whereabouts
and who she had talked to

and what she had said was true.

She actually took a couple
of photos with her phone,

from the road, of the
crime scene to show me.

When we were at
the crime scene,

one of the officers asked
me, do you know-- because I

took them to Kylen's body.

And they said, do you
know where Crystal is?

And I said, no, but I
believe she's that way.

And so an officer took off and
went walking that direction.

And a few minutes later,
he came walking back out,

and he's walking really fast.

And I said, did you find her?

You know, because I wanted
to know, was I right?

Is that where she was?

And he just put his
hand up like this.

And his lip
was trembling and he

just walked really fast by me.

And I said,
I didn't kill them.

I would never kill anybody.

They took my phone.

And that is not only to
eliminate her as a suspect

but also to eliminate the
potential for a defense

attorney to say, well,
you didn't really look

at the person who found them.

Cindy Sue should have
had a ticker tape parade

and been given
the key to the city,

not treated like a suspect.

And I was relentless to
get answers, to get help,

and to even enlist
Dog the Bounty Hunter

to come and help me.

- 2:30, sir.
- All right, god bless.

Thank you.

I said, please, please,
please come help me.

And he showed up,
much to my surprise.

You know, we had
the world-famous

Dog the Bounty Hunter
helping out.

And he got a celebrity
from across the country

to come out here with a
crew at their expense to--

to dig deep.

When Dog the Bounty Hunter
came, he put up a 1-800

number and took in clues.

Dog showed up and he wanted
us to give them a short list

of who we thought
was the greatest

suspects to-- to--
to go digging deep into.

Now, we went into
that meeting with Dog,

and the very first person
we mentioned was Adam.

When Dog came, he thought
it was someone else.

He was only here two days,
because law enforcement

called me into the office
and told me that they had

figured out what had happened.

Law enforcement called me in.

And JD was on my side when--

I thought they
going to arrest him.

Grabbed me and pulled me in.

And we thought,
what's going on here?

And they sat me down and they
gave me a piece of paper.

I read it.

When I got halfway through, and
I saw that Adam had confessed.

We were pulling
at all the strings.

We were tugging
on everything we

could right there at the end.

We were trying to find Adam
so hard there at the end

that we had the
FBI running traces

on any of his known associates
or known possible whereabouts.

And we had the Utah SIAC
doing the same thing.

They came to the
same conclusion,

that he was still receiving
mail in Hollywood, Florida.

Adam Pinkusiewicz was
driving a white hatchback,

as far as we knew, and so--

until we got to Florida
and was able to pull up

an old incident that
Adam Pinkusiewicz was

associated with a black Yaris.

We also learned a lot
about Adam Pinkusiewicz.

He also lived, according to
the police, the van life.

He was living out of his car,
which was a Toyota Yaris.

We also learned
he apparently was

a guy that was living
at the same campsite

as Kylen and Crystal.

As far as we know,
Crystal and Adam

never actually met.

You've got to understand that
when the creeper showed up

at their campsite,
she didn't recognize him,

didn't recognize him as a
person that she worked with.

We gotta remember that this
is at the tail end of COVID.

And back then, everybody was
still wearing masks, especially

in the food industry.

He had purchased a Glock
19, 9-millimeter handgun.

He had bought the types
of rounds that were

used in the double murder.

Eventually,
law enforcement caught

up with Adam Pinkusiewicz'
significant other.

When enforcement contacted him,
he said, this is about a murder

in Utah, isn't it?

And what he explained
was that Adam told him

he killed a couple
of women in Utah.

This lover of Adam's told us
details about the crime scene

that the only person who
would have known these details

was the killer themselves.

When he was asked why
he didn't report it,

he said he was afraid
of Adam, that if he

said something, that Adam,
you know, could harm him.

But what he wasn't aware
of was, by that point,

Adam had already
took his own life.

He had actually
committed suicide

within weeks of his departure
from Utah,

from Moab.

In fact, he took his life
on September 24th of '21

just weeks
after leaving here.

His suicide note
that was found in Iowa,

he did go on a pretty big rant.

He indicated that he had
to contend with an unhappy

work environment.

He must not have been
happy in his own skin

to have such animosity
to a lesbian couple.

Shortly before
the murders, he

notices at one
point that Crystal

has come into McDonald's.

She's not in her
work outfit, and she

is making some sandwiches
behind the counter.

She's making some for Kylen.

And this really aggravates
Adam Pinkusiewicz.

He thinks this is somebody
who shouldn't be doing that.

And so he goes and
complains about this.

You've got to keep in mind,

Adam knew
who these girls were.

He had complained on them
to the McDonald's management.

They didn't know him.

So it was a one-sided
connection, almost.

He brought up the fact that
he was tired of being told

what to do by these women.

So I don't know if they were
telling him to quiet down

in his camp, or to stop
working on his car,

or to stop playing his
music loud at night.

We just don't know.

There was a lot of
disturbing discoveries

about Adam Pinkusiewicz.

When they were going
through his phone,

they saw that he would
have notes about how

he had these cravings to--

to rape and to murder people
and things of that nature.

It almost seemed to be more
like, if it was a hate crime,

it was more gender-based as
opposed to sexual orientation.

So it's, I think,
more of the gender

that he is angry
and blaming as opposed

to their sexual orientation.

Unfortunately for
this case and for, like,

a trial, Adam Pinkusiewicz took
his life in Waterloo, Iowa.

And then that's when
I learned the case

was closed, not closed.

And I'm like,
I don't understand.

How can the case be
closed, not closed?

And was told, they're still
looking for DNA evidence.

They're still
looking for the gun.

He took his life with a
revolver, a different gun that

was used in the murder of--

of these two girls, which was
the first thing that stood out.

After he had
committed the crimes,

he had actually physically
moved the girls,

and must've got blood
all over himself,

and then sat in his
car and fled the scene.

Well, that blood
and-- and DNA must

have transferred to his
car, into his car seat,

down in under the covers.

But once they found the
car, it had been sold.

It had been detailed twice.

So even though they cut apart
and chopped up the seats

and looked for DNA

away more than once.

When we were in Florida
and we found out

that the Yaris had been sold

and that Adam
had committed suicide,

we were able to get
ahold of Adam's family

and was able to get them to
allow us to take some of Adam's

personal effects
into custody as evidence,

including three cell phones.

In the cell phone data,
we found the connection back

to this individual in Iowa who
ended up being Adam's lover

and who ended up
being the witness

that he confessed to
prior to his suicide.

The most important thing
from the outset

was finding out who
did it, bringing

them to justice if
at all possible,

and closure for the family.

You hear about cops holding
on to things that they

didn't finish for a long time.

But at the end of the day,
the closure for the family

is way more important than
the closure for the cop.

Nate helped me.

Nate listened to me.

Nate took my clues seriously.

And Nate and Al,
the other sheriff,

really went out of their
way to go try to solve

this crime and-- and--

and do the research
across the country.

By finding them,
they got to go home.

They got to bury
their daughters.

And they got to
know what happened.

As tragic as it was,
they weren't

left with those
questions looming

over them, which so many
families have to deal with.

God forbid your
children get murdered.

I would not wish it
on my worst enemy.

By far, the most distraught
loss you could ever go through

is a child and a parent
dying in the wrong order,

OK, especially murder.

I watched the light
shine from inside

out of Kylen and Crystal.

I was absolutely thrilled
and supportive of

their wonderful relationship.

It came out over the radio.

A big, serious police
call comes out.

She wins a number of military
honors and distinctions

when she is in Iraq.

He was watching her.

It initially sounded like,
perhaps, a school shooting.

You immediately
assume the worst.
