We are headed to meet Tom Gallagher.

It is a nice day to be on the water.

The foliage is not even close to peak yet.

So, where are we headed today, Chase?

We are out on Long Pond in Somerville,

We are headed to meet Tom Gallagher.

He bought his camp 20 years ago.

Tom is a regular at our restaurant, Woodshed.

He's been talking about his place for a long time, so--

It's about time we do one for the regular.

- Yeah. - All right.

We love our regulars, don't we, Triggy?

I'm Tom.

- This is Willie. - -Trigger, you wanna come meet Willie?

And growing up in the middle of Manhattan...

...our parents always made sure

that we had the taste of the country.

Maine was always perfect because it had both ocean and mountains

and pine forests, which we always loved.

All right, come on up.

So, from then on, I was hooked,

and I said, "I needed to have the camp."

- Come here. - -It's safe to say Trigger likes Willie.

Right.

So, I looked for quite a while, probably a couple of years.

And I found this place.

Cool.

And it was perfect.

So, tell us about the cabin.

Well, I bought it in 2002, and I've done a little bit of work.

Well, actually, a lot of work.

One of my best friends, Artie,

he was an electrician.

He passed away a year and a half ago,

and he was up here quite a bit.

He helped me do a lot of the electrical,

and just general help, just getting things done.

So, this renovation is in his honor.

-Awesome. What a special thing to do for him. -Thank you.

When I bought the place, it was pretty much a shell.

And he helped me do a lot of the work.

And after we were done for the day,

we'd sit by the fire, have some beers.

And he was just that special guy, you know,

he was a brother.

So, the outside, you know, looks like fairly new siding,

fairly new roof.

So, I mean, it's on a foundation.

What are you looking to have done to the camp?

Yeah, I like to entertain folks up here,

and I need some more space to do that.

So, I have an addition put out on the side here,

basically open up the kitchen area

and move the kitchen into that addition.

That way, you can open up the living area

to be more receptive to having guests.

And then, have a slider coming out to a covered porch.

And that way, you could sit there.

And enjoy the like--

Just covered, not screened-in, just--

Not screened-in, just a covered porch.

You wanna keep this entrance?

Keep this entrance, and then have a new front door put in

- on the other side of the addition. - -Sure.

And that would pretty much become the main entrance.

Is there anything landscaping wise

you'd want done out on exterior?

Well, probably, we'll have to move this stone wall out

a little bit to fit the deck on the outside.

So, as far as the cabin itself,

I mean, how much are we doing inside?

The wood, I'd like to keep the kitchen cabinets a nice retro style.

I'd like to have those restored.

I'd like to keep a couple of walls inside

and build bookshelves.

And there's a loft inside,

have that taken down, and then that would open up

the inside living space.

Bathroom, bedroom, all that's fine?

That's all been updated over the years I've been here.

- Plumbing is good, electrical is good? - - Plumbing is good.

Electrical is good.

What do you have for budget for this project?

Thirty-five-thousand dollars.

Okay, I think that's doable.

When are you hoping to have this work completed by?

Do you use this in the winter?

I can. The road is plowed,

so I still have access to it all winter.

So, maybe ready for ice fishing season.

Yeah.

Okay, so timeframe...

-Twelve weeks. -Yeah.

To have this ready for you for winter season

to come out here, ice fish and just hang out.

I think 12 weeks is probably a reasonable amount of time.

We just need a set of keys.

That's a cool old cabin.

I'm gonna do some art for Artie.

Yeah, Tom mentioned Artie was up here

helping him with a lot of the projects around the camp.

So, it's going to be really nice

to try to find something to do,

to remember Art.

So, because we aren't starting this one for so long...

-Yeah. -...we're just gonna focus on that front porch.

So, you can still come out and use it.

Yeah, the ceiling's all done up there.

It's gonna be nice.

This is the perfect build for going in the winter because it's on a foundation.

We don't have to jack it and level.

We don't have to touch the roof.

This is a dream job.

Yeah, and it's insulated.

It has some heat, so if it does get cold,

we're not totally--

And the best thing about it.

You don't have to go to a cold outhouse to use the bathroom.

- True. - Points.

On the interior of the camp,

we're gonna tear down the wall that separates the living room

from the mud room and get rid of the loft.

We'll add a new addition and extend the kitchen out into that space,

so that we can give Tom more space for family and friends.

On the exterior of the camp, we'll move the rock wall out

a few more feet from where it sits now,

so that we can put a deck off the new addition

with a covered porch facing the water.

We'll add an eastern white pine

that ties in nicely to the existing siding

with another door off the backside.

-Perfect. -All right.

Today, we are back at Tom Gallagher's camp

Wow, not a lot of ceiling space, and I'm not even a tall guy.

Get it back to the bare bones.

Eventually, this picture window is coming out,

door is coming out, open it up.

And then, in here, this kitchen is going to swing that way in the new edition.

So, this will all be open.

This will all be open, and then you open that up.

The loft goes away,

this all just becomes nice living space.

Yes, absolutely.

Yeah, we're gonna not get too deep,

so that Tom can still come out and use the space.

But we're gonna pull off the walls

in the front porch.

- We'll start stripping. - All right.

And peel off some of the siding.

It's gonna come out real easy.

Strip it back to see what we're working with.

I've never seen that.

So, this is kind of more of like an exploratory demo.

Those must have been the blind mice.

They didn't know they were outside, not inside.

We're not gonna start this until November.

So, by giving Tom a couple of more weeks

to use the camp for this beautiful, splendid foliage festival fall we're having.

And we'll get Francis in here,

we'll have him move that wall over for the new edition.

put our footage down and go to town.

Yeah, so we're in tearing the plywood

off the ceilings and the porch.

And it just so happened that one of the pieces of plywood that we pulled off

popped off and slid in and cracked

one of the window panes.

And so, today we're gonna get it prepped.

And so, then when we take it out to the camp, we can put it in.

I'm definitely gonna need a second coat.

I don't have to worry about getting paint on,

you know, the new wood.

I know and I'm fixing it.

Obviously, I could paint it by myself,

but it's more fun to have him painting it with me.

I picked sage just because I know that

that's one of Tom's colors that he likes.

- That's gonna look great. - -Are you gonna walk around with it all day?

He likes the neutral natural colors,

so I thought sage would look nice with the wood.

It looks great, we'll put one more coat on it.

We'll get it down to Tom's.

Do something special for Art.

So, it's gonna look great.

- Nice rake. - You laugh, but it actually works pretty good.

Yeah, so we're still pretty early in the Gallagher build.

Oh, look, a lot has changed since we've been gone.

And we knew it would be a little while

between demo and when we started building,

that's why we didn't get too far into the main house.

Rocks are out of the way.

Francis came in, moved all those.

We stripped this back last time.

But where the addition is gonna go,

Tom came out, shut the water off, pulled the dock,

you know, still use it, it was a nice fall,

so we didn't wanna take away from it entirely.

Very nice.

He had everything emptied out in the kitchen.

Today, we're focusing on just getting the platform built and supported...

...so that we can know where we need

to rebuild the stone wall.

So, we are building a platform for the addition.

So, the first step is to figure out your overall dimensions.

And then, you basically build a box.

in order to get up this wall, so we can strip back the interior sheathing.

To see what's going on because the goal is to have

this entire wall open as much as possible.

And I just came up with this crazy idea,

and I wanted to pick his brain.

So, I already repurposed the bookshelf.

Yep, he reads a lot.

Yeah. And now, his friend, Art,

- who passed away. - -Yeah, the electrician.

Yeah, so I thought it would be fun to, like,

incorporate some sort of wire or...

Do something like that.

Right about, like, the bookshelf area.

Yeah, but you could, like, kind of, like,

circle some wires together and make a lamp shade.

Don't you like that?

That would be a good project.

So, what do you want me to do?

No, no, no, you're not.

You're not off the hook yet.

But we're talking about get these re-done.

- Yeah. - I really don't know--

Wire brush from drill, the wheel brush.

And then what? Take 'em, just put a fresh coat of paint on it?

Okay, you can focus on figuring out what we need for this.

Now, that we have everything transferred down

and braced off, squared, leveled.

So, now we're just installing our floor joists.

And then, put in all the joist hangers.

We are framing up walls...

for our addition, which will be a kitchen

and space that allows Tom to look out at the beautiful view.

And inside, the guy's got the front wall and the loft all demoed out.

So, we're not wasting any time.

We've got our walls all sheathed up.

We're getting ready to build a roof system on this addition.

We've peeled back metal panels in order to prepare

for tying the roof system into this addition.

And the guys are numbering 'em,

so when we come to reassemble everything appropriately,

we'll be able to lay the sheath back.

Put this edge on center, right?

So, we're setting our ridge beam.

-Yeah. -Yeah.

And then, figuring out our patterns for our rafters.

We've got a bit of snow the past couple days.

It slows things down a little bit and makes it messy.

You spend most of your day doing snow removal.

It's just a matter of waiting for a little warm day

and get the roof cleaned up, and then we can put the roof on.

All this way to the ceiling,

we transfer it to the new beam system.

So, we can walk right into Dougie's new kitchen.

A pretty small build, a newer cabin,

but we've just been so busy fighting Mother Nature.

You see that they all have jobs.

There's always one job and the one that gets it the worst.

But they've got a warm fire, they're fine.

So, it is rainy today,

and we are unable to work at the Gallagher camp.

So, I'm meeting Scottie here at the workshop.

Tom wanted to save those old, probably from the '50s vintage metal cabinets.

So, we are going to spruce them up.

- Hey, Scottie. - Hey, Ash.

- How's it going? - About time.

Scottie is the guy for this job

because he's really good friends with Tom.

I was supposed to do this three years ago.

Three years ago?

So, he definitely wanted this done for a while.

What do we want to do first? Get those stickers off?

We can scrape them off.

Scottie knows what he's doing...

That's not even coming off.

...refurbishing metal cabinets.

He really likes his tomatoes.

I'd say.

So, the first thing that we need to do is peel off these stickers.

Go, you got it. You did good.

Once we removed the stickers...

You can follow behind me, whatever I don't get.

...we went and did a nice sanding

to get all of the rust off.

And also just get the surface ready to be painted.

- Get the bare spots and most of the rust. - -All right.

We chose to use spray paint because it gives that really flat, flat look.

Won't have any paintbrush strokes in it because it's on metal.

Everything's really, really noticeable.

Yeah!

We picked out a semi-gloss

and that finish is very similar

to the original finish of those cabinets.

I think it's gonna look great.

There we go.

Back at the gallery camp this morning.

It's a frosty, like, 12 degrees, we got here.

Well, the guys are doing a great job.

This job for Tom is not typical,

but we're putting an addition on to the camp

that was only built 25 years ago.

You know, it has great vinyl siding.

But we don't do vinyl siding if we don't have to, we do it our way.

So, we're gonna tie in the vinyl siding on the original cabin

into our beautiful eastern white pine.

And we wanna make sure it's flashed properly.

And there's gonna be areas where water is gonna come off that other roof.

We wanna make sure we tie in everywhere,

we're gonna be protected.

Here's a good example of what we're gonna tie on the vinyl siding here.

But when we come in here, you know, we're gonna...

we're gonna wanna put an inside corner that's gonna be pine.

It's gonna get painted the trim color, green.

And then, they'll put their J-Channel in.

So, this will accept all the vinyl siding.

And this one will transition over to our pine side and keep moving.

I'm coming around here to the beautiful French doors here.

Coming over the porch looking at the lake.

When you come inside, spray foam it, and tie it back up.

This place looks great.

Yeah, I'm gonna trade you something, right there.

Yeah, we've got very little time left at the Gallagher camp.

Spray foam got done yesterday, the day before.

So, today, all about getting as much pine on the walls as possible.

I'm just loving it.

We've got Josh Bail, Andy, Jason Frappier.

So, we've got a good crew.

And hopefully we can get all the interior walls finished up.

So, Jared and I are getting to do this little ceiling slope.

And then, we'll do the ceiling flap.

And then, we'll start and do our walls up to the ceiling.

Today we are at the Gallagher camp.

That is a lot of work that needs to be done, actually.

They're putting up the sheathing, you know,

one good thing is sheathing goes fast.

And the only thing I have to do today

is get a lamp made

-I'm gonna take off this lampshade... -Yeah.

...and I'm gonna attach these wires to the metal frame.

How are you gonna do that?

With knots.

You know what they say?

If you don't know a knot, tie a lot.

So, I knew I wanted to do something

to honor Tom's best friend, Art.

Let's get the wire.

Art passed away a little while ago.

Here I go. I'm taking this apart.

Art was also an electrician.

And he was the one that actually helped Tom renovate the cabin.

So, I wanted to do something to honor Art.

First thing I needed to do was take off the original lampshade.

To get rid of that altogether, I wanted to use the wire frame.

All right, let's see if this is gonna be...

If I can get this tight enough to stay.

And once I did that, it was pretty much

just cutting the wires to length.

Here we go.

Oh, boy.

Then I need to separate them out into groups of roughly five-seven pieces.

And then, fold them in half.

Like that.

And then, tie a little knot around the wire.

And then, just keep on going.

Huge friendship bracelet for Art and Tom.

One-O-seven for full piece.

- Full piece. - Okay.

Perfect.

Heads up!

Yeah. That was like... whoa!

Stuff is slippery.

So, we were installing the ceiling boards

and they were all pre-stained

with a high gloss poly.

So, if they were to lean against each other,

they were very slickery.

Which is slippery and loose, all-in-one.

Then putting the addition on opening up that wall,

There's no way we're gonna get to do that reveal the next day or two.

and then just add our own little touches.

Yep, I've had some of the nice artists and craftsmen

that we have at Kennebec Cabin Company.

I picked out one pillow in particular.

It was a blue one with pinecones

because I knew the color scheme

that I had going on here,

and we were trying to keep it with a masculine feel.

You know, I like to use local whenever I can.

So, I grabbed a few things just to make sure that I'm always supporting them.

Two weeks ago, we had a storm come through.

Kind of unexpected, caught everybody off guard.

So, it postponed the reveal by a couple of weeks.

You've got a six-foot covered porch.

Metal standing seam roof to match what was there.

And eastern white pine siding with a nice exterior stain on that.

Everything's on pucks, off the ground.

Francis came in.

The first thing he did was pull the stones away, then reset 'em.

Use those two long ones right there

for a nice seat right in front.

- Great. - -They'll have views of the water.

And, yeah, it ties in nicely to the existing stairs.

I can't wait to be sitting on that porch.

I love the doors.

I wasn't expecting this. This is...

It's absolutely perfect.

with an enclosed porch.

So, to get rid of that wall in that loft,

completely opens up the whole living space.

Funky lamp I made out of wires

because, you know, your friend, Art, did the electricity, right?

I wanted to do something to honor him.

So, I got these old wires and I tied them to knots

and just something totally different.

Wow, that is so cool, Ashley. Wow.

I mean, the imagination and forethought

to do something to honor Artie.

It's you, Artie.

It really meant a lot to me.

Yeah, and then we have a reading nook over there for you.

It's a book shop.

A lot of your friends at the Woodshed

told us you were looking for a little place to sit and read.

With the lamp right there,

it kind of makes a little special spot.

- Look at this. - - A whole new kitchen.

Wow! Look at this.

- You got to keep my old cabinets and everything. - - We did.

Scottie and I took that over to the wood shop and sanded it down.

- Wow. - This is beautiful.

I wasn't sure if it was salvageable.

I didn't know if there was rust underneath and everything.

So, when they were able to finish that off,

and put it back in the kitchen,

I mean, it's absolutely fantastic. I love it.

And a kitchen door.

A new door.

Woo-hoo!

I'll have another way to get in and out.

Wow!

And it's closer to the driveway.

So, it makes a lot more convenient.

These floors.

It's gonna be a great place to sit here in the summertime.

I like sitting out and watching the weather come across the lake.

And you can't really do that sitting outside

if it's pouring rain.

This is where I'm gonna find you.

- Yes, most of the time. - I'll come visit right here.

Just put a covered porch.

And that way I could sit outside on the deck

through all kinds of weather.

We were happy to do it.

Right. We had $35,000 and 12 weeks to get it completed.

...we were able to get it done and completed.
