And then she developed this program, science class outside.

She got teacher of the year, and then she got a grant,

What you got going on, Sharon?

Probably four or five years ago,

we really started noticing a decline in kids' grades.

We know that all outdoor research says

that once kids are outdoors for a little bit,

when they come back in, they're more focused.

So we opted to offer an outdoor earth science class for all of our freshmen.

The thought is that it's a more engaging program.

It's hands on, and we're seeing some steady increases

in grade point averages.

We're seeing better engagement.

So Isaac, from a student's perspective,

anything else you think you can add to this?

Uh, I really think it's a good idea 'cause

it's really good for, uh, hands on learners.

Not sitting inside a classroom reading papers all day.

So what are you looking for?

I think we're looking for about 24x24

with about four feet in the back being for storage.

And we're thinking right over here.

It's kind of an area that's between the football field

and the baseball field

tucked back into the woods a little ways.

Yep, they do a lot of their work right, back here in the woods.

So this would really be a place for us to continue to do

all of our outdoor hands on science experiments,

um, without having to stop and put it away,

or drag it into the building.

Ashley couldn't be here today. There wasn't enough room on the bus.

I wanted my Gardiner boy, Jedi, with me,

but, um, she would want to know if there's any colors we should stay away from

-besides red and white, -or... Yeah, yeah.

Any aesthetics that are important, or...

I think just kind of the natural look.

I mean, that's why we're interested in working with you guys.

Doesn't need insulation?

Doesn't need power.

Some windows to let some light in?

Windows would be good, since there won't be any electricity.

And on nice days you want it.

So, like, maybe big doors so you can let the air in, and--

And, plus some of the equipment will need to--

It's easier to open the doors if we can move some of the things in and out as well.

-I have four rain barrels. -Yeah.

So if we could do some sort of a, like a guttering,

that would bring that down 'cause that would provide water for us out there.

some way that we could put up like a... like maybe a beam

so that we could do some of the physics activities outside.

That might be really, kind of cool.

Drip kind of mechanics and all that.

And you need something that's gonna be ADA approved.

Yes. So there are all terrain.

A wheelchair has to be able to get up some sort of ramp.

Let's do a nice, durable floor that you can sweep up every day, and...

-Yes, yes. -Something that can get messy, and...

you don't have to worry about it.

Is there anything you'd like in the building that you think

would kind of help with the class at all?

I think it may be a long table so you can spread everything out,

-kind of gather around. -Yeah.

Typically, we always ask about time frame and budget.

- Yeah, mm-hmm. - Um...

Do you have either of those?

I think we're looking at about 25,000,

- um, and then timeline, like-- - About eight weeks.

- About eight weeks. - -Eight weeks would be great.

$25,000 to build a 24x24 structure.

For me, this is... This is real science,

and I think all educators, all science educators,

really want to give kids an opportunity

to learn about science in a real setting.

So for me, this is like a dream come true.

See, this is where I would have been hanging out in high school.

They got paths everywhere.

A nice spot tucked back here.

They are looking for an outdoor learning structure,

a 24x24 outdoor structure on pucks, beams,

a solid floor, closets on one side,

barn doors, wood exterior windows, a hanging pole,

metal roof for a rain collection system,

and a nice ramp up into it.

We have plenty of materials back at our work yard in Monmouth.

We have a cabin there. Probably somewhere.

Yeah. Anything we can do to help stretch that budget,

just helps students.

So we framed up, used 2x6s, used 2x4s and sheathed it over.

That's nice that we were able to reuse those walls from that other project.

So are we going to use the same, uh, rough opening windows?

I'm not sure if we'll, you know, we may end up stringing them down.

And then two on that back wall.

This front is gonna be two small walls with a garage door,

barn door opening, and then we'll use the trusses over that one.

today we are setting the trusses.

24-foot trusses, 13 of them.

They're not very heavy.

So we should be able to set these. No problem.

We are getting 4x6 for a post

to hang science experiments off from.

and just help balance it in place while holding it up there.

and that's got your vertical studs built into it

so it sheaths up conventionally.

About a year ago, we started realizing

just didn't have a way of...

adequately installing the systems.

It was so much work, so much effort.

So we decided to build these all in one systems

that really made it super simple and easy.

That's what we're kind of thinking might work here.

Basically, put up on the wall, put the house on one side

and the solar panels on the other side

and hopefully away they go.

It's gonna be great to offer the high school

a little bit of solar power.

They can use it, you know, as an educational part of their classroom.

So today, Ryan and I are making a sundial

for the Gardner High School outdoor science building.

This will be our base.

Gonna probably pop it out and just have it be concrete.

But then once we go like...

And we're going to put this right here.

And this will be the center that casts the shadow.

I think when we were talking about it on the job site,

I had my speed square in my hand.

I thought sundial. That's a cool science project.

And that was really cool.

Because we needed that triangular shape.

It's a cold, cold morning.

I think it was about three degrees in my house when I left.

You can see the windows got installed yesterday.

They look great.

We wanted it to look like a cabin.

Ashley picked out a nice stain color.

It's gonna be beautiful.

Over here is gonna be Sharon's storage area.

We're gonna have our solar array right here,

and then she can have all kinds of shelving.

Brad and Jay are gonna frame this out today.

And today we are working on floors, doors and walls.

Got some OSB board that we painted at our shop in Monmouth.

talking about where I'm supposed to put the sundial.

are putting up a rainwater collection system.

And as you see,

we had to fur our gutters out beyond our roof line,

do we were able to catch the water.

It's going to transfer from this end,

pitch all the way down to this end,

and we're going to pipe it down

so it can drop into the rain barrels.

That comes down.

What's nice about the way Chase designed it,

is like on a cold day, you shut the doors

and all that south-facing sun hits it.

And on a warm day, you can open up

the windows on each gable end

and the breeze will come right through.

You had asked for a 24X24

self-contained science building.

We went with an eastern white pine siding,

metal roof, nice big barn doors

and we even have a few extra special surprises inside.

And, um, there appears to be, like,

some amazing little something on the roof there.

That was one of the surprises.

Oh. That's awesome.

You're probably excited to go inside.

We went with this painted floor.

We went with a truss system for the roof,

put this metal roofing on top of that.

Framed in closets, and then

closed in the interior walls with pine v match.

Light outlets along the walls.

We had a nice big slab,

so we threw that in here,

so you can all stand around that and work off of that.

You guys are gonna have a lot of fun in here.

I'm jealous. Gonna have to come hang out.

This has been like a decade long event.

Come on up, guys.

I wrote for grants to build

an outdoor classroom, which allowed us to

look at teaching students differently.

And so I had an opportunity

to convince people that being outdoors

is really where students learn best.

It's a great opportunity for our students.

It's going to really help further this amazing program,

and it's going to continue to get our kids outside.
