Today we are on Cobbossee Lake, in central Maine,

and headed over to meet Dan Patrick.

So, I said to get sporty,

you guys took it to the next level.

You know, we decided to have a little fun today.

If we're going to meet Dan Patrick, we're going to be dressed up.

But, as you know, he's been a big supporter of us since the early years.

Dan and his wife, Sue, are building, you know, a family compound on a lake.

There's a main house, a barn/studio,

and he wants us to build a cool bunk house

in our cabin style.

-So, he's got a big family-- -We better not strike out.

My name's Dan Patrick, I'm a sportscaster.

A couple years ago, I first met Ryan.

I really have gotten to know him and it's been a great relationship.

I told these guys to get sporty

and they took it to the new level.

Maybe I hired the wrong people.

Am I on the wrong show?

You could've worn this

and I could've just worn the T-shirt that said "football."

No, you guys wear those well.

-We excel at building, not necessarily sports. -Oh, no.

Or dressing.

I just wanna know what was the outfit you said "no" to.

Like, when you said, "I got it!"

but there had to be one where you go, "No, that's too much."

-Chase is, like, he's a team player. -No!

He is a team player.

Well, the reason why I'm up here in the first place,

is because of you guys.

-Oh, well, thank you. -You made the place look beautiful.

And I got up here

and I fell in love with a piece of property

and I'd never built a house before.

I wanted something on the lake

and I figured this is a family compound.

I have four kids and a grandchild

and everybody's already staking their claim to bedrooms up here.

Right?

It'd be great if we could do something,

a small, little bunk house.

And it's gonna go right behind,

-right down here by the water, huh? -Yeah.

He saved the best spot for us at least.

I just wanted something that looks like it's belonged here

for a long, long time.

-I-- -So, are you looking to...

kind of match the style,

have the bunk house fit in with what you've got going on already?

Yeah, I'd like the roof,

you know, the metal roof, to be universal,

-because-- -Guess what his favorite color is.

-Green. -Yes.

-So, yeah, green roof will tie everything in together, right? -Yes.

I wondered if a small, little bedroom there

and a loft space where you had another bedroom up there as well.

And, then, sort of have a central living room maybe.

-With a little kitchenette? -Yeah.

Just something kind of simple, roll out of bed and you're in the lake.

- Yeah, roll out-- - I mean, not literally, but...

- Pretty close. - ...close to it.

A little deck along the front

-probably with some seats on it and stuff? -Yeah. Yeah.

What I'd love to have is a back porch

and use the stone

and just create sort of a natural dock

or gathering area down there.

And, then, have a dock that goes out on the lake

How often do you see this camp being used

in the winter time?

I would treat everything

-as it's gonna be used year-round. -Perfect.

So, you're looking for a bunk house

that fits the area,

fits in with the new builds on the barn and the main house.

-Yeah. -Roughly 30 by 36,

kind of taking advantage of view of the water,

couple of bedrooms.

What do you have for a budget?

We can do $150,000.

When would you like the camp back?

Can I get it by Halloween?

- I mean, we are dressed up. - You are.

-Yeah, we do fit the fire right now, so... -You do have costumes on

-right now. -Kinda walked into that one ourselves.

We're building a cabin in a big hole.

We're very concerned with water runoff at this job.

This is a sloped lot.

Everything goes to the lake, so we've got to put drainage in.

The goal is to have a nice winding path down.

Walk off the path, into the deck.

We are building a bunk house on posts.

We've got bedroom downstairs, a bathroom, and a small kitchenette.

Loft space upstairs for sleeping.

We're gonna add a metal roof, covered porch,

and bridge to access into the camp.

New patio area down by the water,

and... new dock.

- It's gonna be a fun one, huh? - -Yeah.

So, I'll make some calls,

we'll get the guys over here, tell them what's going on,

we'll get on project.

-I got tee time. -Par for the course.

Back at Dan Patrick's,

I'm gonna do a layout for the bunk house.

We are about two months behind schedule on this.

It's been the wettest July on record.

But, like we like to say, better late than never.

I've got my excavator coming in, Corey.

He's been doing earthwork for me for 15 years.

-I like your trust in me. -I trust you.

So, Corey and I, we're laying out roughly

where the bunk house is gonna go.

And to do that, we have to take in a lot of factors.

We have to figure out...

we're within the 100-foot setback,

which is these blue marking lines.

We have to stay 8 feet off the septic tank.

-There? -Ten foot's right here.

-Ten foot? -Yeah.

And we have to stay out of the way of the view of the beautiful barns

Everyone loves new builds,

but there's a lot of different stuff

you're dealing with in new builds.

but he doesn't know how to pull the tape yet, so we'll get there.

We're gonna hold back the earth where it's sunken down,

Wednesday I have a huge delivery scheduled.

We're supposed to start building.

So, we're putting in our retaining wall.

Once we paint this nice line,

we know that's the edge of the blocks, so that we can keep the wall straight.

Good thing I wore my steel-toes today.

Very critical that this gets done perfectly.

We have posts coming tomorrow,

so if we can get this one wall in,

he can, do the rest tomorrow, so we can keep working through.

This is gonna be our highest camp off the ground.

You know, it's all about elevations and water runoff.

A lot of water comes through here,

that's why we're building this retaining wall.

So, this is gonna be the bunk house

-for this project. -Okay.

Well, I'm back at Dan Patrick's

and it felt like I never left.

Corey and I were here late last night, working on the wall.

We got it to a point where I can meet Cam this morning

and get him going on the techno posts.

Corey's gonna be back today.

As soon as Cam comes out, he's gonna finish that wall.

We're gonna be here tomorrow with a full crew

and try and get the deck going and get this thing busted out.

So, Corey's got his block walls here.

I envision the camp coming to the edge of these blocks out here.

Today we would like to get all the beams up in the floor system.

So, carrying beams running this way.

Yeah, four of them.

Cut the posts down to the ground,

get our measurements.

I'm gonna get some tools and start cutting these.

Perfect. All right, we'll get going.

Pipe is 3/16th to a quarter inch thick.

Typically you want them between 3 and 6 inches above the grade.

Perfect.

We're a little bit behind, I'd say, oh, probably eight weeks.

We're way out.

Out of the past 60 days, it's rained 40.

It was so wet, we couldn't get the machinery in here

to do the groundwork that was needed.

Now the groundwork's done, it's time to roll.

20-foot beams weigh around a couple hundred pounds.

It was nine feet up there.

Little bit at a time.

We got a lot done today,

but that back corner, it just drops off so it's really high.

So, we're gonna have to get some staging out to do it safely.

We'll get a crew here tomorrow that'll finish that beam.

They'll put in all that 45 and bracing and it's secure.

I'm gonna jinx us, but I think this is gonna be the hardest part of the build.

At Dan Patrick's,

the guys, they're getting their 4-system on, which is 2 by 10.

and they got it squared up to the edge of the retaining wall.

-We might have to work to put in... -Yeah, go for it.

As soon as that's done, we're out of here.

We're gonna have the deck at the same level as the floor,

so we'll order 2 by 10 pressure treated

-to frame this up. -Just the two I'm looking for.

So, I'm coming up to check on this and...

I think we've got some problems, guys.

When we first met with Dan,

I remember specifically him saying he wanted, like, a nice, little bunk house,

nestled into the woods.

When I showed up, I felt like we're in a tree house

and it was pretty big.

It feels like... It feels like a second home,

not a bunk house.

I feel like it's gonna block the view from the barn.

- How high up are you? - I know.

When you stand up there,

-it does actually look pretty high up, doesn't it? -I know.

-Seriously. -Go right to the top of your head.

That is high when you're up there and we're down here.

I think he just wanted a cozy, quaint, little bunk house.

Wait, what are you trying to tell us?

we could lower it and shrink it a little?

I think he wanted something nestled down here,

tucked away.

We haven't been asked to make this camp small and lower, have we?

No.

Look how high up I am.

He didn't want something big.

Well, we're lucky you came when you did.

Couple days later, we would have already been on to the walls

and it would have been a hard "no."

But, you know, with Ryan and I being down at the low point,

Ashley standing up there, it definitely was high up.

And I think we were going into this with the mindset...

"try and get as much as we can for the camp owner."

Get the highest peak of a roof we can,

but that's not what Dan is looking for.

Because we're gonna end up building a smaller structure,

I think the amount of labor it's gonna take

to drop this down isn't that much.

Timeframe, we're probably adding one or two weeks

to get back to that position.

Cut it down,

we can cut off what we need to from the deck itself.

We'll save it, we can pull it apart and use it somewhere else.

Slide it off,

lower these down,

and then just set it back down on that.

It's not that big of a deal.

I think that Dan will really like it like that.

If we give this back to Dan and he says, "Oh, I wish it was bigger,"

Just when you think you're done swimming for the year,

I just got a call from Ashley,

demanding this log out of the water.

Corey's onsite, so it works out well.

I got my chainsaw, and a lifting strap.

He's gonna walk his machine down in a minute

and we're gonna haul that thing out.

We'll get this out of here,

get it to a kiln, start drying it.

I think Ashley wants to do an accent wall,

so we'll mill up some boards and she can do what she wants.

Things are coming along nicely at the Dan Patrick project.

Walls are framed up, we got it shrunk down.

Lots of floor has gone in,

rafters have gone up to sheath.

If the guys keep up this pace,

we'll be picking out a costume for Ryan in no time.

Back at the Dan Patrick camp

and as you can see Brad and team have been really, really busy.

This is about where the old camp platform was.

Brad and the team dropped it down about three or four feet

and it does really look good. Don't tell Ashley.

Inside, we're in the back bedroom.

This will be a full bath, nice big shower

and then we've got this beautiful Cathedral part.

We've got a nice loft up there.

Really tall peaks so it really feels great.

Then come out front,

and the guys are working on the deck.

We're gonna get put a hip roof over this.

It's gonna be beautiful.

Chase and I are getting ready to put a new hip roof on this porch.

A hip roof is pretty much where all sides slope down

creating a ridge, no gable ends,

similar to a pyramid.

Getting up our post.

They're not light.

We ran our headers across.

See how close we are.

Right where they need to be.

It's gonna be a cool, cozy little spot to sit in comfortably.

Well...

We've got all our posts up, our headers run,

and we got all our patterns for our roof rafters

and now we gotta get that roof on.

Now it's just lugging and plugging.

I think Cory's ready to put in the floating boom.

Since we're gonna be doing a patio here with the landscapist,

we are gonna install our erosion control fence out into the water.

And it catches all the sediment,

keeps it contained into one area

so it doesn't spread out to the lake.

How come you don't use this at all on all the job sites?

Cause we've never done anything like pulling this big stump out.

Normally we touch the earth and we don't touch the shoreline like this.

This is cause we're actually gonna touch right next to it.

We have about three weeks until Halloween at the Dan Patrick camp

and the guys are throwing up the siding.

Lower part of the cabin is vertical shiplap

and the upper part is cedar shakes.

It matches the barn and the main house.

On the inside, things are really heating up.

and the electricians are getting the place wired.

Tom is gonna work on

getting us a cool library ladder

to get in the second story loft.

It'll come right up through this bay

and then it'll be open, that way the heat pump can blow through it.

-It won't affect anything. -Yes, yes, yes, yeah.

This cabin has high ceilings

and a really high pitched roof.

So we need a steep but safe accessible way to get there.

So Tom's gonna do a library ladder with handles.

It's gonna be a two-foot knee wall on each side.

Once the interior frame is finished up,

we can get the place spray foamed

so they'll be able to enjoy the cabin year-round.

- Very nice. - All right.

We are very concerned with water run off at this job.

Corey said he would do a nice job with riprap

and try to channel the water.

We're gonna have a riprap channeled.

We're gonna have a bridge built from really beautiful rock

across that and into the cabin.

The draining and what not, you could still get in.

It won't get their feet wet, it'll be awesome.

This week was all about wrapping up the exterior.

We installed green metal roofing and green windows

to match the other cabin.

We finished up the last piece of siding,

threw on a porch railing

and started working on the interior.

Roll it up!

Love it.

So it is the last week at the Dan Patrick camp.

-We got a football team today. -I know.

We've got to get the gable end wall done

with the boards from the log that came out of the lake.

The knee wall on the loft gets the boards as well.

We've got to get the kitchen counters installed.

Couple of people will be sanding the boards.

I'll go help sand.

-I'll be a sander. -I'll sand.

I'll install.

We should be able to get a lot done today.

We need to.

These are the boards that we took out of the lake.

Now we're just trying to hit them really quickly

'cause we wanna retain that character

but we also want it to pop.

So I'm just, you know, hitting it really quickly

and then at the end, knocking off these little hairs.

To really need to see those boards come back,

I was like, it's like I was telling it, "Oh, welcome home."

You'll be at home again.

I've never seen a tree's journey like that.

So, it's kinda cool.

I kinda felt like one with them.

I kinda felt bad sanding them.

We are using this rough cut lumber

as kind of like an accent

on the knee wall for the loft

and on the gable end wall facing the lake.

We're just gluing and nailing.

Lovely.

We're 96 hours out

and we need at least 72 of those I think

to get everything done. So Ashley's team is gonna be down to the final minute.

I'm just gonna be so glad it's over.

I'll put on just about anything.

Except like a muumuu or leotard or yoga pants.

I don't have a yoga pant butt. I can tell you that right now.

So, it is the last week at the Dan Patrick project.

Corey is cleaning up the waterfront.

We are waiting on the bridge for mainly handrails.

But deck is done.

Inside, we've got Shax putting in our countertop floors.

But everything's been timed.

to do a beautiful sunken patio here and a beautiful dock.

When you're a few hundred miles away

trying to make this happen

and you're not allowed to see anything,

and I had total trust in them

but there is still a part of you that there's some trepidation of,

"What if I don't like it?"

Everybody likes what they see and I thought,

"Okay. Is this gonna be the one where I show up

and I go, 'What did they just do?'"

Here's your new dock.

The stairs, kayak launch.

This is gonna come in handy.

Three days ago this was just mud and everything.

Nice path up to the camp and there's the camp.

Amazing work.

- It really fits in with everything. - -Yes.

Yeah. It's got green metal roof to match all the other roofs.

There's a little bit of the vertical pine siding

to match the garage, little bit of cedar shakes

to match the big house.

What do you think of the size of the camp?

Perfect. It's exactly what I wanted as far as

the height of it, and the size of it.

I think I'm gonna name the bridge after you, Ryan.

And then all of a sudden you see it and you go,

This right here is the log.

It made a little trip around Cobbossee.

-Oh, it did? -So we got Corey pull it out,

had it milled up

and put this nice grey wash on it.

When I saw the difference,

the shading of the wood in there,

it looked beautiful.

I didn't expect something like that.

The place is fully insulated.

Spray foam insulation. Floors, walls, ceilings.

Got eastern white pine on the walls and ceilings,

small kitchenette area.

Chase, there's trouble back here.

Everybody worked really hard

and they took pride in what they were doing.

It's like something that you would get out of a fairy tale

where you go and they have this little, you know, house

in the countryside by a lake.

If it's not Trigger it's Ryan jumping on the beds.

Oh, Trigger can't handle that you are up there.

They made it quaint, comfortable,

and you know, you could have a family stay in there

so it was great.

I think there's one more thing that you gotta do.

-What's that? -What day is it?

- Oh, Halloween. - Halloween.

You have to put a costume on.

-Did I really say that? -Yes, yes you did.

So, Ryan, right in the closet out back there,

I have a nice costume for you.

Dan, Chase and I will go wait on the porch for you

and then we can give this cabin back to Dan properly.

So, you had to pay up on the bet.

I was going to dress up as Chase today.

And I actually went about

trying to get a beard and red hair.

My wife goes, "What if they don't get dressed up?"

I hope there's pom poms involved.

This wasn't that bad.

I'm bringing him back to his old high school days.

- I thought it was gonna be a lot worse. - -Too nice.

-Yes... -We're too nice to him.

You watch and you don't know if people are really friends.

You know, the camaraderie. But then you're around them

and that's who they are and that was comforting.

It was fun. It's fun to be around them.
