So we are sailing on Pocasset Lake today in Wayne, Maine.

Chris and Lisa Toomen got a camp on this lake.

It's ready for a refresh, and, uh, we're looking forward

to what you can do with it.

We had to 'cause we were short two people.

There's some wacky stuff going on here.

Where we sailing off to today?

So we are sailing on Pocasset Lake today in Wayne, Maine.

- Question. - What?

You couldn't have found a bigger sailboat?

I'm comfortable.

It's not really a giant lake.

Perfect size boat for this lake.

This is the most comfortable ride I've ever had, actually.

- This is great. - I'm comfortable.

-I'm just sure I'm gonna go swimming anytime. -Um--

So, Pocasset, you spent a lot of time here.

Yeah, so Pocasset is right in Wayne's hometown.

Chris and Lisa Toomen,

who actually live in Wayne, New Jersey.

They've got a camp on this lake,

and they're looking for more space, planning for grandkids,

and they're just ready for an update.

Um, I think we lost our wind.

I can make some wind.

No.

- Sure? - -What is wrong with you?

You should've told me to have beans

if you were going sailing.

We're the Toomans.

Well, this is really a special place for my family.

I've actually been coming to this lake since I was born.

Nice camp.

This doesn't look that bad at all.

We rented on the other side of the lake, uh, for many years,

and then we bought this camp in 1989,

and it's really been a blessing

to be able to share that with our kids.

We have three adult sons now

that have done many of the same things we did as kids,

so, uh, that's been great.

And it's ready for a refresh,

and, uh, we're looking forward to what you can do with it.

Yeah, so what are you looking to have done to the camp?

Well, when the whole family's up,

it's a little bit of a challenge with sleeping space.

We only have two small bedrooms off the back,

so we have bodies on couches, bodies on air mattresses.

So if we can squeeze some more sleeping space,

it would be really good for us, maybe even a loft.

A new, uh, kitchen and a new bathroom, if we could.

A bigger shower with a washer dryer.

Well, we have rocks in there

that the kids have been getting every year.

They write their name and the year on the rock,

and we'd like something to put them in

because they're starting to overflow on the floor.

That would be nice.

-Rock and roll. -Yeah, rock and roll.

And right now, there's only one small door

in and out of the camp,

so a second door would be really useful.

Is there anything about the camp that you love

and wouldn't wanna see changed?

-We spend 99% of our time on that porch. -Okay.

It doesn't need to remain untouched,

but as long as we still have the view of the lake

and we can spend time there.

And I do a lot of grilling outside,

so if we could do something with that, that'd be great, too.

One last thing,

if you look behind us here, you can see our wellhead,

which ended up right in the middle

of the front yard and is kind of--

Yeah, interesting spot.

Yeah, so if you can figure out

something to hide that, we'd appreciate it.

Are we doing the exterior?

-Yeah. -Oh, yeah.

Are there any colors that you're leaning towards?

I would just really like it to blend into the background.

We are exposed here on the lake,

so it doesn't stand out in the scenery.

When are you hoping to have this completed by?

I know we're on the end of the summer season.

End of October, eight weeks.

How much do you have to put into this renovation?

Uh, we're thinking $50,000.

Eight weeks to get this camp refreshed.

Sounds reasonable. We just need a set of keys.

I can't even begin to express how much it would mean to us

to know that it's going to be in good shape for our kids

and the next generations,

and hopefully, it'll be in our family forever.

How do I get in?

She really likes bears.

A Burns bear to cover the wellhead.

Now, our good friend, Danny Burns,

makes amazing carvings of bears.

We haven't seen him in a while,

so I think it's about time we give him a call.

I think a bear would be a great way to cover up that well.

I want a bear that's spitting water

- the whole time or something. Put a hose up through it.

So, a door on this side, you know,

close access to the kitchen.

This is like we're at a diner.

Better use of this space and then the bathrooms.

This is where it's gonna get a little challenging.

It's just one big bathroom right here?

No.

It's a tight little bathroom to start.

It's all gally.

Come look at this room. The windows are so cute.

I love these windows.

Oh, and one more bedroom?

Yeah, one more small bedroom over there.

How small is this room?

It's not that small.

Well, you wanna look... you wanna have a couple more days, though,

thinking about it.

-It's tough call, isn't it? -Oh, that's a little...

I hope there's another bear up there.

It's gonna be hot.

- And there's no light switch. - -I know, that's what I was thinking.

How much space is there for a loft?

Enough for a sleeping loft.

But even if it's just over the back third

where the bedrooms and bathrooms are...

I love these doors.

All right, here are the rocks.

All they need is a bigger basket.

This is nice.

I say we, um... Soon as they get their stuff out of here,

we push back down and we can spend a week out here

and just hang out.

On the interior of the Tooman camp,

we'll get rid of all the old paneling and replace it

with pine, new kitchen, larger bathroom space

with room for a washer and dryer.

We'll rip out the carpet and put in new hardwood floors.

And we're gonna raise the ceiling by getting rid of

all the old collar ties up in the attic

and put in a new loft space.

-Wow, that's nice. -...oh, yeah.

-A nice breeze. -Whoo!

-Yeah, there's our sailing breeze. -Right?

Just a jack and level.

Yeah, I think one of them's broken under there,

but we can, you know, minor.

On the exterior of the Tooman camp,

we'll replace the broken post underneath the camp,

add a dormer over the back third of the camp

to create more headroom for the new loft, new roof,

new entrance on the kitchen side of the camp,

and new patio space for grilling.

And we'll have our friend, Danny Burns, the chainsaw artist,

create a special covering for the wellhead.

Yeah, there's really not much more to see.

-Right. -We just need to get all the guys.

-There's nice wind, let's go get back on the boat. -Let's go, we got this breeze.

It's demo day at the Tooman camp.

And they really got all their stuff out of here.

Now, that everything's cleared out, you can kind of see

that it is definitely ready for an upgrade.

I think really today, if we focus on

getting down the paneling, getting it stripped back,

get the carpet up, get the kitchen torn out.

Well, it's not rot,

but that's right where a mouse built the house.

That is disgusting.

A lot of times, these mice are in wood piles.

They're in, you know, the tall grass.

You guys really did some deconstruction today.

But anyway, you know, I wanted to come out

and just sit on the porch

and enjoy the cabin the way the homeowners do.

Yeah, sometimes, it's good to just come out here

on demo day and just get a feel for the camp.

And enjoy the view.

I'm going to get into their mindset.

I don't think this is gonna fit me.

We came, we saw, we demoed!

Yeah, so we're at the Tooman camp right now.

We're underneath here just kind of, uh,

replacing some of these broken concrete pillars.

The camp owners did recently have

this place jacked and leveled.

But this one broke off right here just at ground level.

This edge, that goes here, this edge in here.

So, we're gonna get that up out of there.

Get that filled in and get a new post underneath it.

You think you can cut this?

- Yeah. - -Hammer drill would be perfect.

This is all gonna be hollowed out.

Then we'll get up and strip the roof.

Inside, we're doing a little dismantling here.

We're gonna raise the roof back here.

We're gonna put a dormer up above

where our loft is gonna go.

So, what we wanna do is we wanna get all those rafters

all ripped out of here.

All these collar tires gone.

We've got rain coming in over the weekend,

so we're not gonna tear the roof off today.

To keep everybody moving, keep progress going forward.

We can get our loft decked over.

Before we tear off the main part of the roof,

it'll give us a nice spot to work from.

Yep, we just wanna be able to walk behind this.

Here we are, week three at Tooman.

We had a little bit of rain come over the weekend,

but as you can see, things are dried up.

So we're gonna go ahead.

We're gonna rip off all the old shingles.

We're gonna prep that roof.

And get ready to rip it open for our new dormer.

- Look at this. - -Looks like you're getting

right to the point of painting.

Well, I'm prepping it, and this is perfect timing.

This is when I need you.

So today, I am stopping by the Tooman camp.

I like this.

Jake gave me a call

and said that he's getting pretty close

to the painting stage.

I know that they wanted something that's gonna blend in,

so I wanted to bring a few different options.

He's gonna be the one that's actually putting the paint

onto the cabin.

These two look amazing.

Yeah, well, you haven't seen this one.

I don't know--

I don't know what that... I don't-- That's a joke.

-Trust me. -Well, I will trust you.

-When it dries, it dries a little subtle. -Okay.

So it's nice to talk with him

and kind of go over the colors together.

-Okay. -This is gonna be good.

That's pretty.

It's got a pine vibe to it,

which they want the house to blend in.

I mean, they want it to blend in.

So I found three greens.

Oh, it's very similar.

Well, now that puts me in a festive mood.

You're gonna freak out. I know

- you're gonna freak out. - Definitely gonna

-be one of these two. I don't know-- -You don't know that.

Give this one a chance.

I wanna just see which one's gonna work.

Yeah, this one definitely doesn't blend.

We'll go "eh" on that one.

It doesn't need that strong of an "eh,"

- but it does get an "eh." - Eh!

And then this one, I think, is too close to the brown.

-It's just dark. -Eh!

-I like this one. We should buy this. -Ding, ding.

Ding, ding, ding. Yes.

We chose this nice light sage.

You're the executive. I like it.

And it will blend right in with the surroundings.

We're here today on Pocasset Lake in Wayne, Maine.

What we're doing today is tearing the roof off the place...

to put in a dormer that's gonna cover the loft.

So what we have done is, uh, cut our roof boards.

Stripped our roof.

Now Brad and I are working on cutting the rafters off...

and, uh, opening it up.

So what we've got here is we've got

our roof pitch all figured out.

We've got our ridge pole in place.

Now let's just build these walls,

and then we'll put our rafters up.

Frame in our gables, sheath them up,

and get ready for windows.

Down below, we've cut out for a new doorway

for the kitchen side of the camp.

We're gonna put on a little deck

and some stairs from that.

And then we'll jump up,

we'll pull the shingles off the roof

and get ready for metal.

Oh.

It's week five at the Tooman camp in Wayne, Maine.

And today, we're gonna be roofing.

The old slow roll, baby.

We're looking good at this cabin.

I haven't been here for a couple weeks.

-It's all yours. -Yeah, I got it.

Since I've been here, the dormer's been done.

Jimmy's got us, baby.

Perfect.

Oh, we're looking good up here.

We only dormered a third of it.

When you take out those collar ties,

it feels like a whole different place.

And remember, this place wasn't bad to begin with.

They just wanted it new and updated.

Hey, is there any way to tell me if that's flush?

- That's flush. - Like that?

Yeah, I mean, the metal roof, when you have a seasonal camp,

just makes sense in Maine.

Yeah, Jimmy likes it.

Winter time, snow slides right off of it.

A little bit extra protection if branches or anything

fall out of a tree.

So, they got a metal roof.

It's just my size, and it's so easy to operate.

Today, I'm at the Tooman camp in Wayne.

The guys are roofing.

Kind of just wanted to stop in

and say hi, see what's going on.

Check out the paint job.

what I was gonna do with these rocks.

When we first arrived, the Toomans

showed me these rocks that they've collected

throughout the years.

They find them in the lake or wherever.

They put their names on 'em and the date.

We've got Connor and John

and Scott and Casey from the year 2002.

They like to go through them and just kind of like

look at them and reminisce.

And they just had 'em in a basket.

So I'm trying to find something to do with these rocks.

I'm trying to figure out a way so that then

they can continue to add to it.

'Cause every year, they said they add to their rocks.

So, I was thinking, A, we could use them out near the patio.

- Yeah. - B, we could use 'em over where

Danny Burns is gonna be doing a sculpture to cover that pipe.

If you think it, you can build it.

- What if we build, like, a box? - -Yeah.

But then just put 'em on top of each other.

- Like a rock box? - That's it.

Wait, I mean, are you gonna have a vertical box or a horizontal box?

Maybe it should be vertical.

Yeah, but how are you gonna hold the rocks in?

I'm gonna place them strategically

so they don't fall.

How many rocks are there... We're gonna have to have shelves for the rocks, right?

-Guys-- -Listen, hear me out.

You know what else you could do?

You could speakers in there

and have rock and roll playing in the rock box.

I think that's a rock solid idea.

Who knew there was gonna be this much stress with rocks.

I'm trying to find something to do with these rocks.

Before, I was kinda thinking about making, like,

a little box for the wall that you could add to,

but they're all different sizes

and that wouldn't, really, wouldn't work.

I like that idea a lot, actually.

Yes, so before, the ceiling was at this height.

And it was all paneling.

And basically, every single rafter had a truss system.

We've pulled the whole thing up,

dormered that back...

Now, we need some sort of collar tie

to lock it all together,

and we were thinking that you could do a couple of nice trusses

-just to keep it cathedral and keep it open. -Yeah.

Yeah, so Vinnie is a local timber framer.

He's worked with us on a couple projects in the past.

We needed some trusses, so I called up Vin.

- Two 24-foot trusses. - Yeah.

- Like, six by six? - Okay. Yeah.

Probably makes sense to do one right beside the door.

- Yeah. - Right?

Yep.

One to the left of the window, to the right of the window?

Maybe to the right of the window?

Yeah.

We need some sort of collar ties to hold the walls together

and hold the roof up, and it's a long span,

so that's why a truss works best.

I think that should be more than sufficient.

We might as well do something decorative and something that looks good,

and Vinnie is a great timber framer,

so it makes sense.

Yeah, so we've got all our metal roofing up,

we put our endwall flashing up.

so that the homeowners can put a grill out there,

and have a direct view to the water.

We'll get, uh, Douggie here next week

to rough-in the plumbing, rough-in the electrical,

get insulated. Then it's, uh, big old prime party.

It's week six up at the Toomen camp in Wayne, Maine,

and things are looking good.

We've got Fred working on roughing-in electrical.

Doug is in the bathroom working on plumbing.

Vinnie is back at the camp working on the timber frame trusses.

Nice. It looks like it's going slow and steady.

Yeah, I gave Vinnie total creative freedom.

He's a professional on this,

he'll come up with something beautiful and something that works.

From there, we can get to sheathing in the interior.

The next step is get the floors down.

And get a coat of stain, coat of poly on them.

We got about two weeks left to get everything done.

I think we're in good shape.

...and today, we are focusing on getting

as much of the interior finished off as we can.

So, I have instructions to work on the rock shelf from the lady.

My wife is not feeling well, she's down with the count,

but she's very concerned with the rock shelf.

-Where is it going? -Right across there,

and the lights will go behind it.

-So I'll work on that. -Okay.

I think I got it.

She's not here, so I'm gonna do a really good job for her.

She'll be happy.

I just found the stud pretty much on layout,

made sure it came over the door,

and the light would go behind it.

And then, of course, I have specific instructions from my wife

on making sure Danny Burns feels at home.

And we already knew we're gonna have Dan come in to hide the well.

We're gonna do a beautiful tribute to Molly.

This was a unique process

'cause so many... when people have seen Dan was working on his past,

we'll give him a big stump.

But he had to hollow the base out to hide the well.

So, he started at his shop. He took a big piece of pine,

hollowed the inside out.

Go clockwise.

And then what he did is he made it look like bark on the outside.

Yeah.

He didn't leave the bark 'cause that would fall off.

Oh, he's been working out,

and then he brought another piece of wood

that wasn't hollowed out to become the head.

Ah, awesome.

Uh, my crew was able to come in here

and get everything set.

So we went rustic build with modern touches for decor.

Yep, we definitely had a space issue,

but it looks like you've solved that.

Yeah, so little bit of jacking and leveling, some of the posts,

you know, had cracks, so we replaced those

with six by six pressure treated,

leveled things out a little bit.

A new door.

- New door. - -Another exit in the house,

- and I'm very excited. - Yeah.

Got inside, tore out the paneling...

- Thank you. - ...tore out the carpeting,

tore off the roof and went up with it.

You've got a new metal roof, just to shed the snow

- and, you know, worry free. - Mm-hmm.

New windows,

the porch was in fairly decent shape,

so we didn't have to do much there. New paint.

Fantastic, I love the color.

- Yeah. - -Yeah, you wanted it to blend in.

- Yeah. - So we did just that.

-I love the color. This is the best shade... -It's a great color.

- ...of green they could have gone with. - -Yes.

Yeah, I mean, most of the change is on the inside, so...

- Yeah, let's head on in. Check it out. -I can't wait.

To see it felt warmer and a full second floor up,

we didn't think that would be possible.

I'm glad we were able to get it.

Like, I didn't wanna come in

and say, "Is this the same place?"

Look, the rocks are up on the--

The rocks, guys, the rocks.

- The rocks. - That's fantastic.

There's little lights coming from beneath them.

That's so much better because you can see them

- instead of sitting in the basket. - -Yeah.

I just love it.

You had a lot of dead space up above there,

you know, with paneling so low,

we got up in there and I was like, "Oh, man."

So, we were able to tear out all the old framing

and we got Vinnie Birtwell, a local, who does timber framing,

came and made these trusses for us.

You know, put those in place of all the other collar ties,

just to cathedral this space open

and then we were able to bump the dormer in

up over the bedrooms and bathroom

to get some additional sleeping space back there.

-This is really nice. -Yeah.

It's incredibly more light in there.

I mean, it was a dark cave.

I mean, we loved it. We loved it,

but it was like a dark cave going in there,

and now it's just open and airy and bright and perfect, you know?

-We know you wanted to enlarge the bathroom... -Yeah.

...and get a washer and dryer.

Washer and dryer, oh, that's a gamechanger.

And we kinda brought this space about three feet into this room,

did a bigger shower in there, all new plumbing.

- The two bedrooms. - Yeah.

Love the pine.

And, you know, the loft with loft ladder to that space up there.

Wow.

Oh, this is excellent.

The transformation from, like, attic to loft

is probably the biggest change, I think.

Now, you'll have a bedroom to sleep in.

This really works.

I just can't believe how much space they were able to make out of that.

Yeah, kitchen stayed in the same place,

just a little configuration.

New stove, new refrigerator, new cabinets.

Carried the floors right throughout into the porch area.

Look at this.

- Oh, my! - Look at the couch.

This looks fantastic.

What a great porch you have here.

Guys, look, we have a table that can actually fit all of us.

Fit all of us.

- That is true. - And...

Yeah.

That is just fantastic.

- This is really-- - This might be my favorite thing.

We spend 99% of our time on that porch

- and the table that's out there now... - -Yes.

...for family meals, and game night,

and, you know, we're gonna be out there all the time.

- Mm-hmm. - You know, it's just incredible.
