my hometown.

-because all the rain that we just got. -Yeah, oh yeah.

And we're at Rick and Janet Carter's

streamside estate.

I can't remember how, but someone in town

reached out to me, told me about Rick Carter.

-I think maybe-- -Probably the town office.

You got best friends down there.

it's a major on Saturday.

All joke aside, Rick and Janet Carter

are great members of West Gardiner community.

Rick has given back to boy scouts

like youth groups use his property,

people kept telling me how great they are

and we already got out to the property to help.

What was the question? Where are we?

From what I'm told,

these are your old classic-style camps.

You know, just little tiny things.

-It's actually two. - It'll be right... It'll be right on the water.

Right on the water. But we've had

-historic rain. -Wait, there's two?

We're lucky we even got down here.

Our kids loved growing up here.

Now with seven grandkids.

They were built around 1940 or in the '40s.

It looks like the roofs are in decent shape.

First, I'd like to see

both of the foundations

- leveled out. - Okay.

I'd like to see them spray foamed inside.

Insulation, there is none.

I like to make sure that the squirrels

can live outside versus inside.

So right now, they've got home in there.

What is this thing that's right... Just here?

My goal was to get it over where that window is.

-And board in - the side to make-- - Detach it.

And make it a little chemical toilet, bathroom.

How about the color?

Like to keep the same red.

And I'd like this one to be gray with white trim.

Well, that's easy.

But yeah.

Yeah, this camp was definitely built

before 1978, so we'll have to test

for lead or just assume that they are lead paint.

You know, that one cabin was recently repainted.

So it shouldn't be a problem.

Update the cabins, attach that building,

insulate, make them critter-proof,

jacking level.

How much do you have to put into the cabins?

- $50,000. - Okay.

When would you like this completed by?

-It's really up to you. -The horses come home

August 12th.

-What'd you say? -The horses come home

-August 12th. -They go to camp.

- That's a first. - Horses go to camp?

To Camp Kippewa, so we can get away.

And collect 50 horses for the summer.

-How many-- -And ours are two.

So the kids from all over the country to come in.

Chance to ride, a chance to get introduced to horses.

Are you gonna return on horseback?

We could, if it's after August 12th.

$50,000 to update the cabins,

jack and level 'em out,

attach that out building

as a new bathroom for this camp.

New windows throughout,

insulate, closing the inside.

We got until the horses are home.

we're going to clean it all out,

new sheathing, and a new set of stairs

leading up to the loft space.

On the interior of the red camp,

we'll clean it out, paint the floors,

new sheathing, and build a new loft ladder.

to how to do this the right way.

On the exterior of the red camp,

we'll jack and level it.

New windows, touch up the paint,

and build a new set of railings

for the deck to make it safer.

And on the gray camp, we'll jack and level it,

attach that small out building

so that Rick can put in a bathroom, new windows,

and give it a fresh coat of paint.

I think our biggest concern right now

is making sure that water level drops

and we can get in here

and everything is nice and dry.

and see what they left us.

Should be able to back that trailer down here 5 miles.

Next step is to get in here and I think

do some jacking and leveling.

This is my type of job.

It's in West Gardiner, roosted down,

and I can show you guys the special project's done.

Yeah, we're at the Carter Camp today,

the guys been moving right along.

Over at the gray camp, the guys are working

on getting jacked and leveled.

This one when we came in,

got our last few posts,

we got the sill around our deck replaced.

I like it, Josh.

That's one end, baby.

And they're working on removing

the old rotted sills

along the camp

and replacing those.

Then they'll tear off the old rotted shingles

and get those replaced with new cedar shakes.

We're trying to get these old posts out of here.

The old posts are just telephone poles

that had set down in the ground.

So, they're just continuing to sink

they've got no base underneath them.

So we're, uh, just having to work

to get these up out of the ground.

Throw that off.

So, we can get it filled in with some good stones,

get our epoxy, get our foam,

and get new post underneath.

Take it to the bank.

Now that we got this old floor system all torn out,

got some new timbers that we're gonna use here

for our new sills.

Our new ledger right here is gonna help

catch these posts.

I'm gonna slide that beyond your direction.

Okay. It's gonna allow us to fasten this addition

to the main building which you can see here,

it's been coming apart for quite a while.

You know, that's closing.

We'll get these sills replaced...

get some new floors jointed in,

we'll be able to deck this over

and have a new floor in here.

And she's also a beautiful painter.

She does landscapes, flowers,

and those cabins sit on the beautiful stream

so I thought, we could come up

with a beautiful scene to paint.

Yeah. Well, I know she loves loons.

And these all kind of driftwood.

These are cool. Isn't it so cool the way

the lakes preserve wood?

Right. It is.

So, I didn't know if maybe you'd like to pick one.

I think, I like one of the funky ones.

Yeah.

But you know, my heart is a little bit different.

So, I'll probably do something not so fine arty on mine.

- That's okay. - Yours is very fine art.

So, I think that we should leave the loon,

-uh, to you. -Oh, okay.

I will do the loon.

But, you know, she also likes these blue heron.

Oh, blue heron would fit nicely on this.

That would be pretty.

Week five at the Carter Camp

in West Gardiner.

Looks like your handle is pretty sweet.

Been extremely wet summer.

And the road just hasn't had the chance to dry out

and driving over it every day

constantly just has made it a lot more soupy and muddy.

You know, a lot of cars don't make it in

but we've got RTVs here side by side.

And but we've got Francis Ryan here

with their machines...

to hopefully, get a good base...

and get us so the road is passable.

That's awesome.

You got me all muddy.

- How's it moving? - Oh, nice.

You want me to push it?

And today, we are working on getting

the outbuilding attached

to the main camp for the bathroom.

Oh, jeepers.

So, when we first arrived...

-Hi. -How's it going?

There was the addition, whatever you wanna call it

that Rick caught and had brought down here

at some point.

And his goal had always been to attach it

to the gray camp

and turn that into a bathroom

with a compost and toilet.

Keep going.

It's solid so we just decided

to get it on some skids

and, you know, use fulcrums and levers

and just move it over with brute strength.

Sweet.

Once we got the bathroom addition

close to where it was gonna go,

we stripped the shingles off...

and made it so that the new addition

will sit flat against the camp.

So, in order to make this building watertight,

you have to be able to step flash

the roof properly so it won't leak.

And then you have to be able to side up to the addition.

So, it's just as easy to strip it back.

Get it right back to wall sheeting,

and then we can attach the little building

to the big door.

Yeah. And you can't put this building up

against a building already sided.

There is just no way to keep it watertight.

Yeah, Chase.

Dustin, I think we're gonna get anything

and try to, uh, get a couple of these on

and then we're gonna try to...

Once it got cleaned off, we brought it up tight.

they're getting everything prepped and ready

for spray foam by adding nailers

to the interior.

And setting post for a cable rail

around the front deck.

and then a loft ladder from there.

I just wanted to pull those out

so that when they spray foam,

they'll be able to get in around that.

And we don't have to worry about locking those into place.

We are here at the Cotta camp.

We're just putting the, uh, cable rails onto this porch.

We've got some good post secured,

half-lapped and lagged right into the deck.

So, we're just gonna get the deck secured

and then we're gonna do a little bit of prep work.

Majority of our windows came in.

So, we're starting to get these, uh, windows installed.

My electricians were here yesterday.

Everything's roughed in.

Over at the gray camp, the guys are working

on putting together the steps up

to the second story

along with building a ladder for the loft.

In the door.

Get that now.

-Turn it around. -Okay.

And then working on paint.

We're going with a nice light gray

for the deck railings and trim.

And then a darker gray for the rest of the camp.

The camp owners wanted to keep it close

to the same color.

So all we are doing is freshening it up

with a nice new coat.

And now, we can get ready for the spray foam.

And climb this up and close this place in.

Today, Fiona and I are at the Cotta's barn.

Oh, look at this.

They have mentioned that they have

a bunch of stuff in the barn

that we could take and use.

This barrel's cool.

Yeah, and right off the bat,

I discovered things. I mean, just like that.

Almost immediately.

-I want to take this. -Okay.

I think, we can think of something cool

to make out of... This out of.

So, we can save money

by taking some of the homeowner's stuff.

You wanna grab some of that rolled barrel?

Yeah. So, Fiona and I found some great things.

We're gonna grab them, take them back to my place

and I'm really excited to come up

with some really great ideas for some special projects.

We're down to final push of the Cotta camp

and it's been a struggle.

We are into the midst of our rainiest summer ever.

As you can see, the streams come back up,

but the guy's doing a heck of a job.

The old outbuilding is attached.

Dixie's putting in the last of the windows.

I love the paint.

I haven't been out here in a while to see it.

The guys did a great job painting.

Inside, Chase is looking on the kitchen.

Josh and Tim are putting out more sheathing boards,

trimming out the windows,

and then the front porch is all leveled and straight.

And as you come over to the second camp, it's amazing.

The water's been coming up almost like tidal.

You know, like an ocean. Comes in, comes out.

And over here, the... I mean, this cable rail looks amazing.

That's the cable railing we've had left over

since six years ago.

It's amazing what you find in the back

of your storage units.

And here, the paint was pretty good

so we were able to keep that.

But all new windows around,

it's been spray foamed,

new lights, new electrical, new sheathing,

and it looks like a million dollars.

And the Cotta family's gonna be able

to use this year-round.

It's gonna heat so easily.

It's gonna be amazing.

I had the painting that I'd done.

This is Janet's favorite bird.

I actually went and painted it with Marylu, her sister,

um, and she did a loon painting,

which I am hoping to pick up today

so that we can bring it and put it here.

I wanted to take a peek, see how far along we are.

They're not quite ready for me to get in there.

Um, so Fiona and I just decided to take

the side by side and get out.

Tuesday, what are you doing?

So, Corbin's done a really good job.

I was very proud today.

He's cutting, he's paying more attention,

and he's becoming a better carpenter,

which is awesome. That makes me proud.

The Cottas definitely like character,

so I think we've maintained

a lot of that with this place.

Floors on the red camp needed something.

We had a can of green floor paint,

grabbed that, gave those a try, and I paint,

coated the floors on the screen and porch,

you know, again, just to clean everything up.

Seal everything up.

are just get electrician in here

to wrap everything up

and then hand it over to Ashley.

So today, I'm meeting Josh and Dakota

at the wood shop

to take the barrel that I found

at the Cotta's barn and turn it into a table.

So what the plan for today is,

we're gonna disassemble this table,

and then we're gonna figure out

how we're gonna attach it to that barrel

so that we can put some bar stools around it.

Fiona and I stopped by the Cotta's barn

and when we were grabbing some of the furniture

that we wanted to use in the cabin,

I didn't see any tables in there.

We definitely need a table.

So, I thought it would be a good idea.

Let's see if we can make one.

I'm so happy for this wood shop.

Me too.

- There are all the tools we need in one spot. - -Oh, yeah.

And the first step was to just disassemble it.

-Okay. There you go. -There you go.

You're on it.

So the Viel brothers have been working with us,

um, for a few years now.

So, that's actually kind of perfect.

Oh, yeah. Look, you don't even--

-Yeah. -Oh, sweet.

I knew that they were gonna be at the wood shop today

because it's raining out.

Yeah. We'll go a little wide with it.

So I gave 'em a ring and said,

"Hey, you wanna help me out?"

And they are so kind and they said, "Absolutely."

It's not a perfect circle.

That's okay.

We'll work with it.

The next thing we needed to do

was to trace around

where we were gonna need to route her out.

-Wow. -Looks great.

And then we wanted to sand it down to,

you know, get all the blemishes off of it.

Well, Josh routed out the circle,

so that it'll be able to fit

right on top of the barrel nicely.

- Oh, wow. - Yeah.

That actually seems like it's a nice fit.

After that, we assembled the parts

to the table together.

I like it.

It feels flush.

That's all that matters.

-Okay. -Okay.

All set.

And then it fit great.

Sweet.

So the only thing left to do was to stain the top.

I think it was pretty.

So we had this perfect color

that matches the barrel great.

Looks good.

-I know, right? -Came out nice.

I'm gonna go find some nice stools

to put around it.

So I think now,

we'll let it dry.

Um, and then we can come back

and maybe, like, a quick coat of poly.

But other than that, you guys...

I think this looks amazing.

Yeah. It came out nice.

And, you know, there was no table before

and now we have a perfect one.

- Cool. Let's take off. - Okay.

Whoa, that was a fish.

They're all over the place right now.

This is great.

I don't know why we didn't do this a long time ago.

We should've just had a pontoon boat the whole time.

It's week 10 at the Cotta camp

and today, it's my team's turn

to put the final touches on the place.

with all these trees changing.

The road is bad still,

so I'm really glad that we decided to rent

a pontoon boat

so that we can just load that up

and we can get the stuff there much easier here.

I can't believe what was accomplished.

Way, way over expectations.

Francis, our landscaper,

excavator, extraordinaire,

kept the road passable so we could get guys in here.

He came in, he put down some erosion control mulch

something that in the rain isn't gonna wash away,

it's gonna stay here, decompose and build that.

- It's beautiful. - Yeah.

And then, you know, first thing,

we tested for lead and everything was clear,

so we're good on that side of things.

Guys got this place cleaned out,

got right underneath, jacked and leveled.

- It looks great. - -Reposted, did everything.

It came back very nicely

and, you know, the guys were super excited.

They didn't have to mess with the roofs

and the red camp.

You know, not a lot of painting on that one.

Electrician came in, all new wiring,

got that all squared away.

This piece that was off to the side,

we got this attached to the building.

- Oh, that's nice. - New windows,

safe railings on the front of the red camp.

- Looks gorgeous. - Wow.

- That's amazing. - Absolutely gorgeous.

The way the windows, the overall attachment

of that building, superb.

The color is very nice too.

just make it very light anyway,

but the windows are wonderful.

everything's been spray foamed

and then we closed everything in with pine,

painted the floors down here,

patched in the floors upstairs.

It was non-inhabitable as far as I was concerned

for sleeping overnight or any such thing,

but it's gorgeous now.

When we ride down here,

I often see great blue herons in the pond.

I love the expression on 'em.

And the loons, I love to listen to them

Yeah. So, same thing,

Jacked and leveled the camps,

all new windows, all new electrical,

closed everything in with pine boards.

We put an addition on for bathroom space.

We used the old door from the red camp.

- Put it in there. - Oh, my goodness.

So then we can put a chemical toilet.

- Yup. - Right?

in my lifetime, I'd have never got it done.

It's so much more spacious.

So we tested for lead, make sure we followed

EPA guidelines for renovations.
