Today, we're gonna do something that was designed by the Romans in 100 A. D.

A dome.

This might be the ugliest cabin yet.

And we've been doin' a lot of traditional builds forever.

And, uh, today, we're gonna do somethin' that was designed

by the Romans in 100 A.D. A dome.

A geodesic dome.

And how do you think they got there?

but I think it was built in the '70s.

So yeah, so we're gonna meet, uh, Bruce and Becky.

They, uh, bought the place about two years ago.

Bruce has been, um, you know, knows what we do for work,

and it's close to headquarters, so he reached out to me.

And Bruce is also an old Deadhead?

Yeah, Bruce might be a Deadhead too. So...

Oh, now we're finding out why you and your Bruce

became such close, fast friends.

So, this is another Ryan arrival.

And the hope is to renovate the dome so that it's livable.

And then, eventually, we'll end up here full-time

at some point in a few years once we retire.

So, it has power.

Yup. There's electricity, there's a well, uh, and septic.

Yeah. What are you looking to have done to the dome?

Well, we're looking to have a lot done actually.

The whole outside needs to be taken off

and hoping to get architectural shingles

and, um, we need a new front entrance

and a new back exit.

Looking to get maybe French doors out the back

so we can have a nice, um, opening.

Some dormant windows.

And this decking all gone and something, you know, little better.

And on the inside,

there's two bedrooms upstairs, but the wall that's between 'em is kinda funky.

Yeah, so, something with the bedrooms to separate them better.

- And then, we're looking to get the kitchen done. - -Mm-hmm.

The bathroom, we did the floor ourselves,

but we didn't finish the bathroom.

- So it needs a shower. - Okay.

So, how much do you have to put in to this project?

Well, we're looking to put about $60,000 in.

And when are you looking to get this work done?

We're hoping to get it done in about three months or so.

So we can enjoy the summer a little bit here.

- Okay. - That's fair.

I mean, I don't know it's fair.

It's fair for you. I don't know if it's fair for him.

That's perfect timing.

Our next day at the dome, we're gonna rip out

all the rot at the base of the structure.

New deck, new front entrance, and new back entrance with nice, big French doors.

Put in dormant windows that open up

for better air flow and to bring in more light.

And add architectural shingles all around to give it a much better look.

-We just need a set of keys. -Excellent.

It has potential.

But I think it needs a lot of work.

Look at Chase's new stairs.

Sure. If we're gonna change the upstairs

and make it easier to get up here.

So these aren't...

Well, I've seen geodesic dome plans

where you build triangles and lock them together with some sort of connector

so that they're their own separate piece.

And then you can connect or disconnect them however you want.

But these are all locked on each side as one.

Just the way it was built, it's super custom.

Each strat or whatever you wanna call it, locks together on all ends.

So we just have to be careful about what we pull out

because we don't want the whole thing to collapse on us.

On the interior of the dome, we're gonna have to re-support it

and make it stable, insulate it.

New windows that open and close.

New kitchen, update the bathroom with a standing shower.

Get rid of the spiral staircase,

and built a new one for easier access.

And build a wall in between the two bedrooms upstairs for more privacy.

I think we could get our guys in here, Chase, right?

And peel this place back, let it air out...

It's quite a bit of demo that we know of, so we got most of the crew with us.

You know those Deadheads. They really stick together.

I've already heard about it.

My dome is fried just looking at it.

So it's... supposed framing on the inside.

Mm-hmm.

- Uh, some major rot issues along the base. - -Mmm.

So, yeah. The goal today is to try and get these decks stripped back.

So we can get right up close to it, see what's going on.

- One crew working that way, one crew working this way. - -Mm-hmm.

Crew can start pulling off that entrance there.

into a place that's not dimensional?

Hopefully none of the framing is too bad

'cause it's probably gonna be pretty tricky. But...

again, we won't really know too much until we get it opened up.

There's quite a bit of moisture.

It actually penetrated further under the floor than I thought it would.

And the challenge is rebuilding. Supporting everything.

We've got a bunch of 2x6s we set aside first thing.

-Out in that shed. -Then we'll...

We can cut out temporarily.

- Build a solid, couple, two or three of 'em together. - -Yeah, exactly.

So that we can replace all the rot down below,

and then, figure out a way to reframe in order to get

walls in there, to put real doors, real windows that open.

Not just, you know, glass triangles.

So, take this spot right here.

Right?

- And start conventional framing straight up. - -Yeah.

Wherever it takes you.

That's where it takes you.

Lock it in.

And so, it's basically from that one to this one, right?

- Yeah. - You've got one plain right here.

Straight up.

Then you go from this one...

straight up. You leave all this...

Do-over and just have dead space?

Dead space. Insulate behind it.

Box out all windows.

Box out your windows and then you can close it in properly.

On the inside. So what are you gonna do on the outside?

I don't know.

I think once we get going, the framing will be fine.

I'm sure you'd get into weird angles.

But it's all wood, it's all angles.

I've got confidence we can figure that out.

It's more the exterior that's kind of the unknown.

This is something we've never dealt with. So...

We're definitely gonna bring in somebody who knows...

who's an expert on it and can do it right.

It was good having everybody here.

We got that 30-yard dumpster full very quickly.

It's emptied out. It's cleaned out around it.

Now we just need the sun to come out, dry the place out,

and then we can start figuring out the rebuild.

Put your thinking caps on 'cause it's... we're gonna have to get very creative.

It's week two up at the dome.

We've had some good weather. Things have dried out.

So we're getting started on the interior.

We've got the crew getting rid of as much

as the old spray foam as they can.

And replacing all of the rotted sills down below.

We've got Sara in the bathroom taking apart the old tub.

So we can give them a stand up shower.

And then, once we get all of the existing framing bracing supported...

...we can start framing out our new walls.

I mean, how deep is it saturated with all the moisture?

I don't know.

The next step really is to get kind of a spray foam expert in here

to kind of let us know what's possible, what are the limitations of spray foam.

It needs to have a waterproof membrane

- on the outside. - It does.

And how we're gonna deal with the exterior.

You want anything with a shingle?

I don't know.

Ee boy. This one definitely is gonna be a challenge.

Today we're here at the dome, it's about week three.

Sara and Shaun and Corbin are here.

They've gone through and replaced all the rot.

We went through and we did a plumb wall all the way around

so we could install our windows and doors to that plumb wall.

There. Okay.

Got it all anchored to the concrete.

So today we're just working on framing and door openings.

And windows.

And we have a skylight going in so we can get some more light in there.

Should I apologize now about this one?

So Chase and I are back at the fry dome.

We decided to meet our buddy, Jay Cook.

I was just trying to apologize for getting us into this build,

but it's gonna be awesome.

He's an expert in all things spray foam

and we need to figure out what we're gonna do with the exterior.

So, hopefully, Jay can save my butt, to be honest with you.

- You think so? - You hope so.

So this place is built in the '70s.

It's super asymmetrical, and...

It looks like they coated it with foam,

coated it with some sort of waterproofing membrane.

Concrete on top of that

- and paint on top of that. - Sure.

- And a tarp. - And a tarp.

- Tarp. - The homeowners...

they love the, like, asphalt shingle look of it.

Yeah, but he wanted... he wanted dormant windows

and he wanted light everywhere.

Of course you said yes.

Of course I said yes.

That's a different story. We're here in the now.

But it's just not possible on this one.

You're really pigeonholed in what you can do I think. Yeah.

That's what we found out pretty quick.

Sure, sure.

But, yes, it's spray foamed on the exterior.

I mean, honestly, I think spray foam would be your best option here.

It's, uh, three-pound closed-cell foam, which could be the base layer

of insulation around the whole dome structure...

When you say three pounds, what do you mean by that?

So-so there's different, uh, closed-cells, uh, foams you can use.

Two-pound is usually the stuff we use on the inside of camps, right?

Three-pound is a denser... has a higher uh, strength.

It's used for exterior applications.

Mostly commercial flat roofs.

And when you use closed-cell versus open-cell,

can you describe that to us?

Open-cell is, uh, air permeable, can absorb water.

- We don't want that. - -But I wouldn't consider

using open-cell, specially on the exterior.

You need that closed-cell structure for condensation issues

and it has insulation all the way around.

No breaks in the insulation.

So, at this point, what do we need to do to prep it?

Well, the first thing we gotta do is we gotta kinda

take-off all that loose stuff that's kinda hanging on.

- Yeah. - -All those little bits of stucco and stuff like that.

So we can have just a good substrate that we can spray to, that's kinda critical.

As far as weatherwise...

- Pray for... 70 degrees and sunny. -Pray for... Got it.

Well, I appreciate you coming down. I know you can't give me

- a overall price, but... - Sure.

- I'll go back to the shop and, you know... - -Yeah.

...put some numbers together for you for sure.

That's gonna be insulation inside, insulation outside,

and then, it's gonna be coated, so that's your roofing as well.

- And you gotta figure all that in. So, I mean... - Absolutely.

So I'm at the dome camp, and...

this dome has been an amazing project

and it's also been an amazing learning experience.

Yeah. Normally, we don't, uh, have the camp owners come in midway, but...

we just ran into so many issues

and we just wanna kinda run everything by you to make sure you're okay with it.

Yeah, you know, our biggest concern is what to do on the outside

and how to do it correctly.

To do it correctly, we got a quote from Jay Cook, our spray foam guy,

of almost $50,000.

So, we made the call. Get Bruce and Rebecca up here.

Let's just go over it where it is.

- We're making progress. It already looks better. -Yeah.

The biggest thing to me is Bruce had all these beautiful, amazing ideas

and drawings. He did so much research about

roof systems and windows, and big dormers,

and the whole thing covered in asphalt shingles.

Structurally, we knew we couldn't do that.

So, we wanna be on the same page.

We don't wanna let anyone down.

Where do you wanna start?

But I'll tell ya, I'm nervous, you know.

Bruce is probably one of my favorite homeowners, being a Deadhead

and for other reasons, you know.

We've come a long way, guys,

and we still got a long, long way to go.

I want them to be happy. So, I'm just...

Hope this comes up, I hope they see

and know that we're gonna make this amazing.

But it might not just be exactly what they picture.

- Yeah. - Wow. How different.

- Yeah, huh? - Wow.

- Wow. - So, you know...

when we first started demo, we got in some of the walls

and the lower sills were rotted out.

Ended up replacing the sills with pressure-treated 6x6's.

You can see those cracks in the spray foam that go right to the outside.

We've stripped off any rotten interior sheathing boards.

Framed in as much of the original geodesic dome as we could.

And then, built these supporting walls to help transfer the weight

and stabilize everything. You know, because...

as it shift... as it rotted and it kind of settled,

things shifted and everything. So...

I think we've got that...

-under control. -Cool.

And it also gives us room to put more insulation into

these walls with spray foam.

And then, on the exterior, we'll do spray foam as well.

Our spray foam expert, you know, he's gonna come in,

like, an inch on the outside with closed cell,

and that's gonna get coated with a polyurea.

You know, it'll be an additional $50,000 cost,

but we just wanted... we wanted you to see it

just to make sure you're okay with where things are at,

just because, you know, it doesn't necessarily...

isn't what you envisioned, but it's kind of what the building

has dictated can be done.

-I think that's the most concise way to put it. -Yeah.

That was kind of crazy.

But I've done some research and the spray foam is gonna be nice

because it'll be waterproof and last for many, many years.

So what are you thinking timeframe now, actually?

Our goal is,

if everything stays on schedule, if weather does cooperate,

- we just finished up this round. - -Yup.

Our next round, we're hoping to finish end of September.

- So maybe a few weeks. - Mmm-hmm.

- I don't think that's unrealistic. - -Mmm-hmm.

On next year's dome, we're still gonna have

windows and doors that open up and a new deck.

But instead of architectural shingles,

we're gonna do a spray foam application

that ensures the camp is insulated and watertight.

Well, you know, when life gives you lemonades, you make...

Yeah, exactly!

That's right. So let's make this thing into some lemonade, yeah.

It's gonna be awesome.

I'm pretty happy, still, and we're really excited to come see it when it's done.

to move forward with the exterior.

So this week, we're going to keep pushing forward,

getting everything prepped and ready.

We've got the electrician here, roughing in electrical.

Then we're gonna start working on windows.

Would you look at it.

And then, spray foaming

of the framing on the inside.

So wintertime, it will be nice and warm,

summertime, it will be nice and dry and cool.

Yeah, so we're at the Fry camp today and it's dome time.

So what's the plan today?

So we've had some good weather.

The plan today is to start getting the dome prepped and ready

for exterior treatment.

So we gotta pull that canvas tarp?

We have to pull the canvas tarp

we have to knock off as much loose stucco as we can,

and then try and clean off as much of the lichen,

and just scuff the surface off everything else so it adheres to it.

You know, we're not even to the midpoint yet of this build.

This is a long one. It's gonna be about 15 weeks.

Start chipping away.

Probably, we start low and work our way right around.

So we got a lot of work to do.

Oh, I'm liking this.

- It's coming off? -It is. It's scraping right off.

This is a... a big boy man lift. It's a 65-footer.

So we can reach the whole dome.

I don't think it's nails. I think it's just glued together

and draped to it itself.

So, we have to peel that old tarp off.

What's crazy is some of this glue is still wet.

Oh, it's slimy too. Oh, yuck!

Clean it up and get ready for Jay to come in,

put an inch down of closed cell foam,

and then put this new spray over that's gonna make it bulletproof,

almost like a bed liner.

- Guys, I'm gonna peel the tarp back... - -Okay.

...like an orange, and then I'll work my way down to the side,

so you guys can reach it.

You sure it's not like a banana?

It's definitely round like an orange.

It's week eight up here at the dome and it's a big week.

The guys are taking down the rest of the tarp

so we can prep it and get spray foaming.

What they're gonna do it take a three pound closed cell spray foam.

It's high-strength, high-density material,

and it's a great waterproofer and insulator.

Then they're gonna take a polyurea coating

which actually comes out a little tan in color.

But over time, it's gonna fade to a more neutral color.

It's gonna help the dome blend in the landscape.

I think that Rebecca and Bruce are really gonna love it in the long run.

And when that dries, we've got the guys inside working on sheathing.

- How does that fit? - I like it.

And building out the wall to separate the two bedrooms upstairs.

Doug is in the bathroom getting the stand up shower put together.

And we're finally gonna get the decking delivered so we can get working on that.

So we were able to get these pre-stained deck boards,

which is great because they are all set and ready to be installed.

It's gonna save us a bunch of time not having to stain them

and wait for them to dry.

Once the decking is done, we'll be able to finish the windows and doors.

Going up inside.

- How does it look from out here? Pretty even? - Yeah.

And, hopefully, we should be able to give it to Ashley and her team

sooner than later.

I'm really excited.

Today, I am meeting my friend John at his shop

and we're gonna make some tie-dye-inspired glasses.

We have a really funky, funky, funky dome that we're working on,

-and this beautiful deck. -Mmm-hmm.

So we're gonna put some lawn deck chairs out there,

and let you sit there and enjoy the view,

-and drink out of some really funky glasses. -Awesome.

We know that the Frieds are big Deadheads.

That fits the mold?

- Yeah, totally. - Nice.

And, you know, people that love hippy music,

I just associate that with tie-dye.

This is what it looks like to begin with.

So the first process is heating up the glass.

Whoa.

-It's getting big, right? -Yeah.

And then, once everything is to temperature...

One tubing will stay.

- First down. -Pull gently. There you go.

You stick the hot glass on, pull it off, twirl.

- Right there? - Yeah.

I mean, you're the designer in the room.

I just assume you're telling me where you want the dot.

Oh, yeah, baby!

And then, just continue and go around and around in the pattern that you want.

- Oh, yeah. This is my perfect glass. -Nice.

So grab it with the tongs one last time, we throw it in the kiln.

Now they have to sit in the kiln for another couple of hours.

Just set them.

Yeah, so if you wanna just give me a call,

I can come back and pick 'em up.

And I think they look fantastic.

It's really cool to have something custom

that's gonna be custom to this unique build.

So things are taking shape at the dome.

Bathroom's getting completed.

All the walls, interior have been closed in with pine.

Exterior's all sealed up. This place is watertight.

Is this environmentally friendly stuff?

New windows, doors are installed, trimmed out.

The kitchen is going to be over here.

All that really needs to happen downstairs

is some trim, paint the floors,

and finish off the staircase.

Up here, we've got new skylight windows,

open and close, better ventilation, better light.

And then, this divider wall for the two sleeping areas goes to the ceiling.

Door's gonna go in here to give the space a little bit more privacy.

Right now, working on doing some wainscoting in the bathroom.

A little bit of trimming there,

gonna get that bathroom all tied up and finished up.

Next to the reveal, we'll coat that and paint it.

It depends on whose autograph was involved.

You know, exterior's pretty much wrapped up.

Big things that are left are kitchen.

You know, we're gonna install the cabinets.

A little bit more finishing off, but it's just about there.

and we are ready to go.

Yes, originally we had 12 weeks and $60,000 to get this dome renovated.

It ended up turning into a 15-week and a $110,000-project.

And I... You know, Chase, that doesn't go against your average.

This one's on me, you know, so...

But, you know, over time limit and over budget is 100% on me.

So you're still batting a thousand.

From the way it looked before to the way it is now, it's amazing.

Yeah, the first week was very challenging

and, you know, as we got into it

you know, we saw it was hiding a lot of secrets.

T he lower supports were all rotted out.

You know, there were the cracks on the outside.

Insects had gotten into it, animals had gotten under it.

Everything attached to the dome structure to the concrete was rotted.

-I love what you did here. -I love this dome.

- I do, too. - The entranceway is... That is gorgeous.

And not to mention, just the whole transformation of the dome itself.

Yeah, it's so much better.

I think that doing the exterior,

you know, cost a lot more money to get it done right

so that's it's gonna be waterproof and stay for a long time.

I have to touch it.

We weren't expecting it.

Wow.

But I don't think anybody knew

-what we were getting into when we all... -Exactly.

...looked at the dome. And we knew it was gonna be a challenge. Nobody knew.

To move around in the sitting areas, the kitchen,

you know, eating area, it's just lovely.

I didn't think any of it could be saved, but I'm glad they kept the original

- frame like this. - Yeah.

And it's good that the divider now

- is not a half. - It's normal. Yeah.

That old divider was weird.

It really was.

The sheepskin and the cowhide rug and the white planters...

she nailed it.

Look at this.

Oh, you gotta be kidding me!

And the windows.

- Oh, I love the window. - -Yeah?

Just removing that tub, it's bright and white.

It was kind of like a closet before,

and now it feels like a bathroom.

Like you can actually use it. It's a house now. So, yeah.

Yeah, so just getting everything peeled back

and seeing what we were working with was a huge challenge.

And then, it was a matter of

figuring out what could be saved, what couldn't,

how to support the second floor.

So we stripped back as much as we could.

We put in new 4x6 pressure-treated sills,

locked those back to the foundation,

so that we could tie the walls so it's all held together.

Jay Cook, again, came in and spray foamed the interiors,

the new kitchen, finished off the bathroom,

new windows, new doors.

- It was all out of whack. - -Yeah.

-It needed to go. -There was nothing right about the dome.

- So opening it up... - -Yeah, it's much more functional now.

Yeah.

Look at this. Oh!

- This is amazing. - Wow!

- Wow. - This is beautiful.

It's absolutely stunning.

It's solid.

- We're not gonna fall through? - Yeah.

The view from the deck is unbelievable. Came out amazing.

We have some custom glasses for you guys.

Nice. Oh, those are really cute.

You know, I mean, I saw a lot of Dead shows in 1979

till the end of the original Grateful Dead,

and I love everything about the tie-dye and the colors and the music

with those glasses. Just the uniqueness and the hand-blown...

It's something special.

Well, guys, I know I speak for all us, you know, we were very nervous

It was a challenge but, in the end, we're very happy

and glad that you guys are happy.

You know, it was... We went over time, we went over budget.

So my project doesn't go against Chase's average.

So he's still batting a thousand.

But, you know, it's 15 weeks, and with the extra money, it's was $100,000-110,000.

But I think you're gonna have a lot of equity, a lot of value,

- and a lot of good times here. - Yes.
