Today we are on Black Mountain in Rumford, Maine.

We purchased the land last year, looking to build a ski camp.

It's a lot of snow.

You guys, there's so much snow.

- I don't know. - I've been working.

Today we are on Black Mountain

We've got a cabin build close by.

So I wanted to get a few runs in on the mountain.

Get up top, check out the view and hopefully get some inspiration.

For once I think there was a caveat, but you knew it was coming.

You guys are right down the road.

-My name is Justin Richardson. -I'm Ella.

So I grew up with a ski area right in my town.

In college, I was a ski instructor, Amy was a liftee.

So, we've always been close to ski areas.

So we came up, I think it was about five years ago,

and just fell in love with the place.

And finally this piece of property came up.

So I reached out to Ryan

to see if those guys could build a ski camp.

Looks like you guys got a lot of the stuff here.

Yeah. We've got in techno metal posts,

waste water's in.

Under here wrapped up, we have all the framing.

All the sheathing.

You have a size, a style, a design in mind?

Yeah. We've got plans.

Uh, it's primarily, ski camp.

Fairly small. It's only 20x28.

But there's gonna be an eight foot porch on the front.

Just one bedroom. But there's gonna be a loft on the second floor.

So that we could have all our friends come up to go skiing.

- Nice. - Absolutely, absolutely.

You have any colors in mind?

- Natural. Not really... Yeah. -Natural, yeah.

No bright colors or anything like that.

-So, yeah. Yeah, blends right in. -We love your style.

- Yes, of course. - Awesome.

Is there anything special that we can do for you guys?

-Yeah. So a ski storage would be great. -Okay.

I have skis and a snowboard.

And I like to switch back and forth.

So, having a place to put both of them would be good.

Absolutely.

And then, we have a dog who has severe anxiety.

So, while we're skiing, the dog's gonna be at the camp.

So it's gonna be as much her place as it is ours.

Yeah. So we prefer, you know, during lunch time,

we can come and, you know, spend time with her.

And so she's not by herself all day at the house.

Yeah. I think, you know, you've got plenty of materials on site.

What do you have for a budget to put into this project?

Yeah, we have a very tight budget.

We only have $50,000 to work with.

So, use everything we have.

Stretch our money as best you can.

And then, whatever's left over,

I'm comfortable finishing the camp myself.

-Okay. So... -Oh, wow.

Yeah. I mean, I think $50,000, we could get a structure built for you.

You'd be okay with us getting it built framers finished.

And then, time frame?

What do you think?

Uh, we're really in no rush.

Because... I mean, we're in the dead of winter.

So it won't be ready for this ski season.

But, if I can get in there for this summer to wrap it up,

- that'd be nice, so that it's ready for next... - -Ready for next.

Yeah, I think $50,000 and we'll say 12 weeks,

just to give ourselves a little bit of a buffer there,

It's a 28x20 structure.

Main bedroom on the first floor.

Open living, kitchen area, bathroom.

Second floor loft open

with extra sleeping on the second floor.

Then they told us that they have a dog with anxiety.

So I'm just gonna look around

and see if there's anything that I can do to, you know, bring in to the camp,

that would help the dog.

If there was an avalanche,

then they could, may not be dealing very well with us.

I mean, if all the framing and sheathing material's here...

We're not doing a build from the ground up for $50,000.

We're doing a build where site work's already done,

the material's already on site.

They're $40-50,000 ahead now.

So this is really $90-100,000 budget.

- So, we literally gotta clearly clear that whole site. - -Yeah.

and tell them, they need to bring some shovels.

Chase and I showed up early to go over the plan,

drop off some materials, and some equipment.

A neighbor had saw that we had a ton of snow to move.

-You knew we were gonna struggle, huh? -Yeah.

Twenty minutes later, Ed's coming down the road with that tractor.

And we're all darn happy.

All right, guys. Let's do it.

Yeah. Today there really isn't any real demo necessarily.

- They're still in my ear. - I'm sorry.

We've gotta dig out the materials,

dig out the site we're gonna be working on.

We were gonna do it all by hand.

But we will definitely take the help.

He was able to run his snow blower right in between all the posts,

clean up around the perimeter.

And more snow we can get out of the way.

we cut our posts two feet in length.

And it just gets the camp off the ground.

Next step is to get our carrying beams.

6x6 pressure treated.

Four runs of that.

Diagonal bracing to help hold it all together.

And we'll have our beam system

and then we can start putting our floor framing in.

So we got our carrying beams up.

We are now building our first-floor floor system.

But this'll be perfect. Our pine's all pressure treated.

If you look at most of the problems we have,

are because camps are sitting on the ground,

or nature, leaves,

brush are packin' up, and don't get cleaned. And water sits there.

Having a camp high and dry with air flow...

Perfect.

It's gonna be bullet proof forever.

Little straight. Square where we need it to be.

Time to lock it into place.

So next step, pressure treated is coming tomorrow morning,

for the deck off the front.

and then we can start, you know, laying out walls and framing walls.

Week two at the Richardson camp.

In week one, we were all here together. We did a heck of a job,

getting the first-floor floor system ready to go.

Since then, Brad has had that decked over.

This way here.

He's got all of the exterior walls up.

- Good? - Yup.

And all those windows were cut in.

That's a lot of work.

-Looks good. -Yeah.

-That's nice and high off the ground, huh? -Oh, yeah.

You know, I had imagined by after this week,

he will have the interior walls in.

He'll have his beams in.

Second story floor joist's up.

And be working on to his gable linings and his roof pattern.

- Here. - Right there.

Heavy.

Just one more check.

One more check. He's normally got all of these.

Anyway, we're not finding another one.

-222 and three quarter here. And do you see it? -I see it.

This will take months to come in special order.

- We're lucky Chase had one of these. - -True.

Today's the start of week four at the Richardson camp.

And we're making a lot of progress.

I got the board.

Brad and the guys have all the beams up

for the second story loft system.

And now they're putting up walls.

Goal today is to get the rafters up.

That's some money, dude.

You can see, ah, this is...

...area right here, is living space and sleeping space.

You know, this time of year,

Chase and I like to check in on the projects. You know, once a week or so.

We got a million things going on.

So it's good to know that the projects are in good hands.

So after they get this framed up,

they'll work on sheathing it.

We'll get the gable ends framed and sheathed.

That feels nice and tight right there, Justin.

After the guys get this sheathed...

there will be a roof system going over our covered porch.

Baby.

Trying to get this thing watertight.

We got long ways to go, but we're getting close.

It's week five at the Richardson camp.

And the place is looking great.

High and dry. Nice farmer's porch like they're looking for.

Brad, Justin, Andy, Carter, Ben here.

They've got the roof rafters on.

They've got the roof sheathed over.

Walls are up. Walls are closed in.

So today, we're gonna try and get as much roofing on the camp as we can.

Thirty foot, three inches.

So that we can get it watertight,

and start installing windows and doors.

How far across?

Thirty foot six-- Thirty foot, three inches.

- So ten panels? - Yeah.

Let's do that.

We had quite a bit of roofing at our headquarters.

Perfect.

So, you know, we brought that down here. Cut it to length.

We had drip edge.

Yeah, baby.

Once we got that installed, it was time to get the roof on.

- All right, I'll get set up the screw gun. - -Perfect.

Beautiful.

Getting the roof on went very quick.

All right. We're good.

Oh, that's beautiful.

It's light weight.

It's durable and it'll last the Richardsons a lifetime.

Oh, we're having a good time now.

Well, maybe I'll start hucking it this way.

You know, there's snow on the roof. But we shoveled it off quickly.

What the heck are these under here?

Normally, we get rid of these gaps.

'Cause we can come and just spray foam it, and fill the gaps,

just to get it sheathed.

Since that's not happening, we have to do a few different steps.

Because, this is framers finished right now,

and, we know they're gonna finish it off by themselves over time,

we can't have gaps in the siding.

So, insects can get through.

So what I would do, I'm gonna put this strip, right?

I'm going in for a block right there and boom, boom, boom, boom.

The carpenters are trying to do the right thing.

They'd cut out for the rafters.

Oh, man!

That's really tedious.

And to get it perfect is a lot of time.

We got an eight foot piece.

So let's start where eight feet is.

So I just showed 'em about the Chase and Ryan trick we've learned.

Okay, see now, that's... What that's gonna do is,

now that's gonna allow us just to put a block.

It's gonna be, but easier in the long run.

And quicker.

You know, fill that strip up.

There you go.

That's beautiful.

Put a blocking on, inside the sheathing.

And then you put the sheathing up.

Yeah, baby. Let me get the lower frame in. Ready it all.

And camp like you mean it, baby.

It's actually a lot quicker. Doesn't seem like it,

but in the long run, it'll be a better insulation.

Our friend, Scott showed up today and had some great ideas.

As you know, the Richardsons, they're big skiers.

So yeah, we had a thought we might do couple of cool things for them.

So, on the side of the building here,

-is there gonna be a place to keep their skis? -Yeah.

So was thinking about building individualized cubbies

that can pull out where they can store all the equipment.

Cool. So if we went in between these...

-But... -Yeah, that's perfect.

Um, so I was thinking about what I wanted to do special for the family.

Um, they talked a lot about the dog.

The Richardsons mentioned that they have a dog.

Um, it gets anxious and, you know, gets like,

misses them when they leave.

So, one of the big things that they're looking forward to,

is being able to bring their dog up here.

So, I was thinking something that would be cool is...

I think to build a stand for them.

So, that they don't have to bend down.

-Yeah? -For their water dish and their food dish.

Can you make me one of those too...

It's kind of hard sometimes, when the dogs have to bend all the way over.

Um, and the dog's getting older.

So, I think it would just be a nice little special touch for their dog.

And then also, I was thinking, since we have this beautiful porch,

I was thinking like maybe, you know how in the mountains, you see those cool ski chairs,

or, snowboard benches.

-Yeah. Oh, yeah. Those are wicked good. -Same like,

doing something like that over here.

- Yeah. Dog on it, you're gonna kill it. - Dog on it.

Today, I am at Chris and Ryan's workshop.

So yeah, the Richardsons have a dog.

And, the dog just has a lot of anxiety, it's getting older.

So I just thought it would be nice if we build a feeding station.

It's elevated.

-Nice. -There's a lot of times, where the older dog,

it's hard when they have to like, bend way down.

-Great. Nice. -So yeah. I got these bowls.

So now we just need some wood.

Yeah, I think I have a perfect piece over here, Ash.

Chris is Ryan's best friend.

-And it has some knots in it. -That's beautiful.

They went to preschool together.

And then off to elementary,

junior-high, high school, um, eventually college.

So, this is their woodshop,

where they are just making furniture, and like, being creative.

It's like a best-friend barn.

So, I think these will fit right in those knots.

Well, first we measured out where the hole was gonna be for the dog bowls.

And then we took this fancy new tool, that I've never seen before.

This is a carpenter protractor.

It's a protractor-type tool

that you attach your jigsaw to...

Oh, my gosh.

And then it just goes...

It makes a perfect circle.

That's cool.

I've never seen this before.

On a scale of one to ten,

I actually love protractors...

Probably a 20.

We're little more than half way through the build.

All the framing's done.

So now it's just a matter of closing up the camp.

So, today,

me, Andy, Justin, and Carter

are working on getting these windows in.

It's pretty important that we get these in,

to keep the snow out of the building.

As you can see,

the electrician's already started laying some of the wires.

So we want to keep those dry.

So today, I'm meeting Chris back at the workshop

that he and Ryan have together.

-So we're building a snowboard bench? -Yeah.

-So the Richardson kids love snowboarding. -Nice.

-And they had extra snowboards. -Cool.

And we're building this beautiful porch for them.

So I thought it'd be great to build a snowboard bench.

-So that we can put that on the porch. -Okay, great.

What's the first step here?

You can take this.

We're gonna go over to the table saw.

-This is gonna be cool. -Yeah.

Well, so the first thing that we did

was that we had to cut down the legs to size.

It's all you.

Got it.

And then we plane them out.

To make them smooth and the right width.

-Right there? All right. -Yeah.

Good job.

And that'll be notched out...

The legs, so that, then they would fit in properly together.

Oh, she fits in nicely.

- Is it? - Yeah, look at that.

And we drilled out holes.

Put these guys together.

So that we could put the bolts in 'em.

It feels so nice.

And once we actually had the end pieces...

...we were able to attach the snowboards.

Put a screw right there, please.

Nice.

I love the bench. I can't wait to see it on the porch.

And I really just like the idea of these things,

not ending up in the shed or in the dumpster.

So it's really cool.

They'll be able to come in and see it,

and like, remember their days of snowboarding.

-We need a snowboard ottoman. -Yeah, exactly.

I like painting on the other side. It's warmer.

So it's last day of construction at the Richardson camp.

Not a lot to finish up.

You would know there's nothing to do if I'm painting.

If I'm volunteering to paint.

Jake is here, working on painting.

Doug is here, finishing up the plumbing.

Covered porch, front entrance.

And to the main living area.

We've got a main bedroom there.

Doug is working on the bathroom.

Kitchen over here.

We'll have stove there, fridge there.

Everything is framers finish.

Usable in the summer time, not insulated.

Not finished interior.

Homeowner at some point is gonna come back in.

And that's something that they can do down the road,

at their own leisure.

But right now, the camp's usable.

And then we got a decent-size loft up here.

So we've got windows on the back side, plenty of head space.

Loft railing there.

Open up down below.

Plenty of room for the kids sleeping upstairs.

Again, everything is framed, finished.

But it's ready for a good cleaning

and Ashley's team to come in and decorate.

You know, this is a ski cabin, and the Richardsons all ski.

We have all kinds of room under the camp.

We got a great idea about putting a rolling ski storage tray.

- It's gonna hold everything they need to put in it. - Yeah. And then some.

Yeah, it's all aluminum.

It's light weight, but it's deep.

We're gonna pull these drawers out, set 'em over there.

Then we're gonna grab this.

Then walk it underneath.

- Watch your fingers. - Ouch.

Scott had come, you know, taken out all the measurements he needed.

Holes were drilled.

Ready? One, two, three.

Nice and light.

So, pretty straightforward.

Yeah, nice.

It's cool. Like a dog system...

It's really just a matter of holding in place and,

locking it in to the floor joist.

-Oh, yeah. -That is slick.

Thought that's pretty odd,

this thing's bullet proof. They're gonna love this.

- Aw, that's like butter, baby. Like butter. - Butter? Cool.

Well, that looks great.

So the Richardsons had $50,000 and 12 weeks to get this cabin built.

These are their old snowboards.

We were only taking it to framers finish.

They had quite a bit material on site,

and they can now take it from here.

And finish it off at their leisure.

And, I can grab the dog dish.

So at least now, they'll have a space that's closed in, watertight,

and ready-to-use for the summer.

It's a ski cabin, so we kind of, you know, went with that theme.

Like, little touches of the mountains,

and skiing and just the outdoors.

It's just exactly what we wanted.

-It's gonna double our days on the slopes. -That's right.

Yeah, the last time we were here, there was, two to three feet of snow.

- Everything was buried. - Below zero.

- Yeah. - -But the neighbors were great.

They had a small tractor, they came and cleared it out for us.

And, then 'cause it was a new build,

techno metal posts were in place,

material's onsite.

We were able to get going right away.

And, able to get it framed out fairly quickly.

And then, you know, nice windows across the front.

We went with a shiplap pine siding,

- with a solid stain on that. - Yeah.

-Nice metal roofs. -Snow will slide right off.

- Perfect. - I love it.

Just from the outside, it's gorgeous.

Think Zadie likes it too.

Well, we have some other things you might be excited about too.

Yeah?

- Let's go. - Let's go inside.

It's so pretty. I can't wait to bring all my friends here.

And we're gonna hang out,

and then it'll be so good to have Zadie here with us.

He went to the plants. Oh, no.

He's so ready.

- Zadie, what's this? - -Zadie, what's over here?

- It's your own area. - Zadie.

- And the snowboard bench. - -Wow.

- Look. What's in there? - What's in here?

Oh. Yummy, Zadie.

Zadie has a lot of anxiety.

So having her here with us when we come up skiing...

Look at the toys.

...be able to, you know, come and see her half way through the day

and, um, she'll feel safer when she knows she's closer to us.

So I think it's gonna help a lot.

We had a day in the barn, whooped up this snowboard bench,

- and then the dog feeding station for Zadie. - -Yeah, this is cool.

So I used to snowboard with the snowboards that are on the bench,

which is so sweet.

Be able to enjoy it forever and not have it sit in storage somewhere.

So, brings back a lot of memories.

- Oh, my... - Wow.

- Whoa. - Wow.

- This is amazing. - It is beautiful.

I love it.

Here, look at your skis on the wall.

- Oh, yeah. - I like it.

I love the layout.

Everything is just perfect.

It's exactly what I wanted.

It's gonna be a great place for us to spend time as a family.

Like I gotta sniff around everything.

Look at that.

- Wow. - That looks so pretty.

- It is so pretty. - Zadie, you like it?

- Zadie loves it. - Oh, good.

I think Zadie's already at home.

And she's already comfortable.

I think she really loves it.

- Yeah, we went with a nice, open space. - -I love it.

Yeah, it's perfect size. We could entertain.

Yeah, 24x28, we've got the main bedroom down here.

- Wow. - It's really big.

All new electrical, all new plumbing.

I love the kitchen. It's perfect.

- A little stove that fits perfect. - -Yeah.

I don't think you can make it up, Zadie.

Whoa!

-Wow. -Look at it.

Oh, it's so great.

- Look at your beds. - Oh, nice.

- Look at this. - Oh, this is big.

- Yeah, it's huge in here. - -It's awesome.

My favorite part is the loft.

I thought it would be smaller. It's nice.

I'm gonna bring my friends back,

so we can go skiing and snowboarding.

Plenty of room for tons of beds.

Yeah.

And I think it'll be fun.

You know, get it, it's framers finish.

-So you can come in and, kind of, pick away with it. -Insulate it up. Yeah.

Yeah. Pick away with that at your own pace.

- That's the plan this summer. - I'll be busy.

So the plan is, I'll do the work

to get the camp ready for ski season.

So we got some insulation to do.

Get some heat in there and we should be ready to rock and roll.

Well, we do have one more surprise for you.

A new back door.

And something else too.

Oh, yeah, that's awesome.

-Get the snow off your boots before you walk in. -Yeah, perfect.

I like that.

No snow going inside.

Look at the ledge.

The storage unit.

-Look, we all have our names on it. -Oh, that's cool.

- Isn't that fun? - Yes.

Oh, we can put a locker in on that.

It's a locking pin right there.

-Oh, wow. -Slide that out.

- What? - Wow.

- Wow, that's cool. - Wow.

And it saves space in the house.

We could put all your skis and snowboards out here.

And it keeps it up off the ground.

Out of the way, high and dry.

I love the ski locker.

That way we can keep our dirty, grungy snowboard and skis in there.

And it frees up space in the house.

-Even your locking is a... -Looks like a ski pole.

It's super cool.

So, I think we... Just time to give you your keys back.
