We are in Belgrade, headed down to meet the Seitz family.

We would come up here with my dad and he passed away when I was a teenager.

This was just like his special place to come.

The loft is kind of dangerous.

And it would be really great to have that bit safer.

We're gonna have to have our lunch thrown up to us.

We don't have a ladder big enough,

and we just closed ourselves on this roof.

- Cast iron sink. - This is gonna be tricky.

We're going up to our castle in the British countryside.

Moved up from camps to castles. I like it.

Welcome to the Seitz family.

- Cabin... on Salmon lake. -Yeah.

It's a cool spot.

So tell us all about it.

So my grandparents

bought our cabin in the 1960s.

We come every summer. Have been coming every summer,

since I was a kid.

Best time of my life with my family was definitely right here.

Me and my brothers, we were always in the water.

There's just so much to do here.

We would come up here with my dad

and he passed away when I was a teenager.

And, kind of the last photo I actually have of my dad

is on the porch.

This was just like his special place to come.

And it's our happy place. And it's been our happy place.

And so, yeah, it's really special to us.

When her father, my brother, got sick...

uh...

-this is the only place she wanted to be. -Yeah.

I just think it's so special

that I can take the same pictures that I had with my dad,

sitting on my dad's lap. Now I can do that with my kids.

So what are you looking to have done to the camp?

It definitely needs a new roof. It's the original roof.

I have a three-year-old and a almost six-month-old baby.

And the loft is kind of, dangerous for the kids.

It's a miracle that like, none of us has ever fallen out,

'cause I slept in that little, little loft area.

That was like, my room, which I thought was the coolest.

And it would be really great to have them here and have it safer.

So we like a dormer and more sleeping space.

Kitchen and bathroom need to be updated.

Probably needs new windows.

- New windows for sure. - Yes, yeah.

The screened-in porch, we don't want screened-in anymore.

It would be more living space,

-if we were to close that in. -Okay.

Now, is there anything on the exterior?

We would really love a new dock system.

Is there anything about the cabin you wouldn't want us to touch?

- He likes the red. - You like it red?

I do and it's because everybody knows

it is the red camp in Belgrade, you know.

Yeah. That's fair.

The only thing I like to keep would be the sink in the bathroom.

I think that actually fits the style of the camp.

And it was also where my father shaved.

- Yeah. - Sinks and color.

Yeah. So, you're looking for more sleeping space,

new roof which includes a dormer.

Make the loft safer.

Update the kitchen.

Update the bathroom, leave the sink.

Yeah. I think that covers everything.

Hold on. Sorry. There's a Seitz curse.

Every visit, it's like the last day or the second to last day,

like someone get a concussion, someone...

-You know. -Oh, gosh.

Not for you. You gotta be a Seitz.

The family's cursed, not the camp though.

What do you have for budget for the renovations on this camp?

-So we have $65,000. -Okay.

We'd love it by sometime in July.

It really feels all surreal.

To see Ashley and Ryan and Chase actually know that,

you know, our cabin was gonna be redone,

it just meant a lot.

This is in really good shape.

Galley kitchen.

Kitchen gets redone.

You know, that's not safe.

Definitely wouldn't want any kids up there.

- There's the sink you wanna keep. - -Yeah.

Tiny little bathroom.

It's a big bedroom.

Dormer's gonna be huge here. Look at that.

Yeah. And we're getting so much more space.

You have a lot of extra sleeping up here.

In the interior of the camp, we're going to update the bathroom,

update the kitchen.

They wanna open up some of the porch to make it part of the living space.

Safer stairs.

Make the loft safer.

And add a dormer.

So I've seen enough. Let's go check out the outside.

See, there are pocks.

Yeah, I know. I like it. We can crawl under.

The sills are all good.

This camp's in remarkably good shape.

It's a dream. We can crawl under it. We can decide to jack it up.

That's it. It's go time.

The trees have been down. There's no trees over hanging it.

- Great parking. - -Not a lot of neighbors.

- Yeah, lots of parking. - Close to the water.

You guys, we are jinxing the heck out of ourselves right now.

So, yeah. We are gonna have to just test for lead paint.

Because the place was built before 1978.

But, I think it's probably safe to assume that

these screens are not original.

On the exterior of the camp, we're going to jack and level everything.

Close in the screened-in porch.

New windows, new roof, and add a dormer.

Hopefully everything goes smoothly.

And we can be out here before the Fourth of July.

- Knock on wood. - All right.

Snow's pretty much gone, Ryan.

Boy, this looks like one we've done two, or three, four times.

Doesn't a cold breeze mean there's a spirit or curse in the air?

Yeah. Everybody be extra cautious and careful on this job site.

So it's demo day at the Seitz camp.

And, you know, there isn't a lot that really needs to be demoed.

But, the plan today is to...

get the interior cleaned out.

- Let's test that curse and get doing... - -No.

Test the curse? Let's cut this cable right here.

I don't believe in it.

Day number one of knocking down the curse.

Can you grab that?

Oh, what is that?

Oh, that stinks bad.

It's not a spider, I promise.

Chase calls me up to the loft.

And anytime Chase calls me to go anywhere, I am extremely suspicious.

Look at that nest.

- That's, oh, a mouse nest? - Not a mouse.

- Oh, squirrel? - Yeah.

I see the biggest squirrel nest I've ever seen.

Um, and then, over in the little corner,

is a petrified squirrel.

Oh, it stinks.

It was stuck to the floor.

Squirrel got caught by the curse.

We're getting this porch prepped up.

'Cause we're gonna close it in eventually.

So we're just gonna get rid of these screens

and just pull all the stops.

These screens are all built as one unit.

Once you get the stops gone,

they just pop right out.

So this camp was built in the 1950s.

It was built before 1978.

So we have to assume that they could have used lead paint.

So we just have to do a quick test.

They make easy at-home tests.

You can pick up and you know, you get down to the base layer.

Break the two vials inside, shake it up, test it.

If it turns pink, there's lead.

That tells me there's no lead here.

I'll do a few other spots,

on a few other windows to be sure.

But that right there is a good sign that there's no lead.

We can safely assume

that there's no lead here and we're good to go.

Oh, boy.

It had some copper pipe on 'em.

'Cause I figured I'd do Doug a favor and get under there.

I'm glad that we took this built-in out.

Before we thought we might be able to keep the lower cabinets.

When I try to do and we do demo,

I try to get in the trenches with the guys.

But crawling under there as you get old is not easy.

That looks like it's pushing up.

So there's some weight on it.

You know the camp is cedar log vertical cabin.

They can be a little tricky, because the vertical cedar logs,

the tier sheathing, your framing, it's structural.

The Seitz want little bit more living space.

They wanna open up some of the screened-in porch

to make it part of the living space.

But, they also want a dormer.

So it's all about transferring the weight down.

And if you start ripping walls out,

where's that weight gonna end up?

We may even wanna move that door.

That's a good idea.

As for the new dormer and open up the living space,

we're going to remove a wall, fill in the doorway,

and add a new wall with a door.

I mean, for that, you could put a big...

-double door. -...double door. French door there.

We do have a couple of nice French doors.

So that when we add the dormer on that side,

So today, we're at Ryan and Chris' workshop.

Chris is Ryan's best friend and he's an amazing wood worker.

We are making a bench in memory of Paul Seitz.

He passed away a while back.

I thought it would be cool to just like, make a bench

that we could put outside...

-Outside? Okay. -Yeah.

...that they could just sit by the water

and just kind of, you know, reflect.

I know the place to come,

-'cause I know who's got a ton of slabs. -I do.

The slaboratory.

For this bench, we went with cedar.

Because cedar is, um, a harder wood.

And it's better to be outside in the elements.

So, three people?

-About from here to here. -'Kay.

Let's cut her.

After we cut its size, we sanded it down.

Cheers.

Then I did my wood burning.

Tell me if you guys are gonna make any sudden movements.

Look. Perfect, right?

- It looks great. - Doesn't it?

- Good job. - Thanks.

-We should put the legs on next. Yeah. -Okay.

Chris has a friend who makes metal legs.

So he's just showing up his legs to me.

-Do you have four of these ones? -I do, yeah.

I think I like that look.

So I chose the nice needle nose legs.

They have a black powder coat on.

So that's why they will last outside.

And then we put a coat of polyurethane on it.

I've never had anybody do this for me.

we've gotta get this place jacked and leveled.

we kind of, went over a game plan.

And we have gotta get ready to tear the roof off.

We're removing the wall,

so we can move half of the living space

out on to the front part of the porch.

Doing some framing, to just expand the bathroom a little bit.

Now poke it right up in that seam right there in that corner.

We're at the Seitz camp today.

We're just cutting sections of the roof apart and getting it out of here.

'Kay, perfect.

We're cutting off on sections, toss 'em off the roof.

Clean 'em up and get 'em out of here.

It's week four at the Seitz camp.

And Jedi and crew have done a heck of a job.

Camps all jacked and leveled.

They got the roof off in prep,

and today we're gonna put the dormer on.

They got the new screened porch over here.

They moved the entrance over.

Look, you'd never even know the door was there. It's awesome.

Here we got temporary supports,

holding this new... the old roof up.

And today as we get the new structure on,

we'll put some collar ties in, and these can come out.

- More? - Tiny, tiny bit.

Hold on. Let me just get the bottom.

Try not to break it.

What we're doing is, we're putting in some support rafters

on the outer gable walls.

4x6, dressed hemlock.

- 'Kay. - Are you in?

I'm in.

So what we've had to do is, pull some of our sheathing boards,

so we can manipulate the rafters into place.

Nice.

- Perfect. - Right there?

Marvelous. Love it.

Nice.

-Beat it. -Beat it.

Perfect.

So I'm just gonna help support the old raw structure,

adding these 4x6s.

There it is.

So now we are working on this front knee wall for the dormer.

A knee wall is just a shorter wall.

Uh, rather than the eight foot wall, this is four feet.

It's a little higher than the knee.

I think it should be called a belly wall

So maybe we should all change it to a belly wall.

If you wear a belly shirt, we'll call it a belly wall.

So we only have to drop in where we want windows.

Once we get that, kind of in place,

we can start working on rafter detail.

At the arrival, the Seitz clearly mentioned there was a curse.

like, more than I even am comfortable with.

So, I had some sage at home

and I decided I was showing' up today,

and I was gonna sage the place.

Just lightens the air, takes away anything that's lingering around.

Any little thing helps.

I love the smell of sage.

Look at my dog going in the grossest part of the water.

He's like a little alligator over there.

Seriously? The whole beautiful lake,

The dogs are doing the opposite of a cleanse.

Living in New England, being Red Sox fans,

we believe in curses.

We just finished up cutting all the rafters and installing them.

Pretty much created a dustpan dormer.

So the next step is to sheath

the roof of the dormer.

She's getting some exorcism somewhere.

Getting this new dormer framed in, everything is great.

But there still is a lot of work.

The last big piece of the puzzle

is the kitchen layout and the stairs.

Getting a full set of stairs is going to be tough.

Because there's not a lot of space.

We had to steal some of the kitchen space to enlarge the bathroom.

But, figure something out.

Ashley vanished. So let's follow her lead.

- Let's disappear. - 'Kay. Let's vanish.

So things are looking good at the Seitz camp.

Dormer's done. Windows are in.

Roof is being finished off.

Camp's being painted.

Kept it a different shade of red.

But it's still red.

Come over to the back side.

There's a little nest up on top of the window.

We got a nest full of phoebe hatchlings.

So, we're not gonna disturb this window.

We wanna keep paintin'.

So we're just gonna work around it right now.

We're gonna let them grow a little bit, learn to fly,

and then we're gonna get in, save that work,

just before the homeowners get here.

- Ten steps. - Yeah.

Here at the Seitz camp,

we're moving to the inside.

Jaybird and I have been mocking up these stairs.

Stegosaurus.

Just is inside, taking care of the bathroom.

Over the last few days,

Doug's roughed in all the plumbing.

So now Justin's laying down new floors.

The sink was really special to the family.

That was one of the main things they wanted to keep.

And rightfully so,

it costs a lot to get a new sink like that now-a-days.

And there's absolutely nothing wrong with that one.

It's good for my house.

Just moving along, one step at a time.

On the handrail... 2x4, 2x4. Boom.

At the Seitz camp, Jaybird, Justin, and I,

we're just kind of, making up our punch list right now.

Justin's doing some pining in there.

Laying down new floors in that half of the front porch,

will make it feel like one continuous living space.

Five-eight?

Perfect.

Mark it...

We weren't able to expand the footprint

of the stance very much at the Seitz camp.

But we were able to expand it just a little bit,

to make it sturdier, more solid.

A new good solid handrail in there,

and some bigger, wider treads.

Safer for Jenna's children to get in there up.

We're gonna sheath up this last piece of this loft.

And then we'll be on to the kitchen next week.

Okay, what are we doing today?

Over the last few days,

the guys installed the safer railing in the loft.

So that area is pretty much finished.

So today, we're trying to get it as much wrapped up as possible.

Rest of the windows are going in.

We've got a few pieces of roof trim that needs to go on.

Cabinets, those will be installed. Just tying together lose ends.

-All right. -Just one more cuddle.

We just got our ridge gap in.

Our ridge gap was a special bend.

Just because of the way the dormer got put up.

These came in today. Fits perfectly.

Just gonna install this ridge gap.

I'm cutting two pieces of the cap for Jedi.

We have a dustpan dormer.

Just gonna tie a little rabbit onto each side.

Corbs, I'll cut this. You can run up to Jedi.

I brought my assistant, Corbin, with me today.

Corbin's my nephew. He's been with us four, five years.

You know, he been doing a lot of dump runs.

But, he wants to learn stuff, dude.

Not just pick things up and put things down.

So today I am going to paint a mural,

in the loft area for the two little boys.

With that big mean forest.

So, that's what I'm... the inspiration is here.

I've got the birch trees.

Now I need to go make some stools outside.

And this place will be done.

So before the camp on the water side

had one screened-in porch all across the front.

We cut that in half.

Made half of it into a living space.

We're closing it with windows.

So it will be heated and part of the living space.

A nice French double door into that.

And then the half to the right is going to stay screened-in porch.

Marvelous.

Pretty colors this time.

Bust some moves.

Mark brought up a large cast iron porcelain sink that he wanted to use.

It was like six feet wide.

So we put in the cabinet bases.

Yep.

'Kay.

Lovely that way.

What we'll do is, we'll lock all the faces together.

And then we'll just attach it to the wall.

It's cast iron sink. It's gonna be heavy.

Don't hit Jedi's truck.

Took, you know, three or four of us

to lift it up and set it in place.

This is gonna be tricky.

Let's get it up. 'Kay. Set it down.

All right. We should be able to...

- Slide it into place, maybe? - No.

Holy moly.

Oh we hit that cable?

-I think it's the... -Yeah.

It's gotta kind of, go in.

- No, those are just mounted, right? - -Yeah.

-Hit the breaker? -Yeah. We'll have to pop that outwards.

Not going on right here.

Don't touch a wire.

Mark brought up a large cast iron sink.

We had to move a few wires, but it dropped in nicely.

And, so heavy that it's not going anywhere.

Didn't leave much countertop space.

So we ended up putting another 24 inch cabinet beside that.

And then on the opposite wall, we put some upper cabinets,

which are only 12 inches deep.

On the ground, just to have a little bit more storage and countertop space.

Anyone know where she is?

I love Ashley's idea upstairs.

Jenna's got two little boys.

You know, on a rainy day, they wanna be outside,

they'll be up, they'll be able to hang out.

Right before lunch, Ash is like, okay, I want stump chairs.

And Ashley got a chainsaw.

I couldn't find her. So I figured, as soon as I started that chainsaw

she'd come runnin'.

Well... She's taking a nap.

Let's sneak up on her.

I'm on lunch break.

I was not sleeping on the job.

Now I know why you didn't hear me, honey.

I dozed off on lunch break.

For the record, I will never come running towards a chainsaw.

I had this idea to put some little stumps around the campfire.

So we cut up three cute little stumps into three little log chairs.

This is nice.

Oh, I mean, it was this when I just wanted to be a catcher.

Gonna, you know, hopefully find a little tent to put over in the corner.

Have some sleeping bags. It'll be a cool little outdoor area inside for the boys.

It looks perfect.

Make something cute and you can get away with anything.

But I don't think I'm gonna try waking her up with a chainsaw again.

I don't think that went over so well.

- How's that, Heidi? - -Yeah, that looks great.

Over the last couple of days, my team and I came in,

and we staged it.

The homeowners have some really nice pieces.

We were able to incorporate those with some new pieces.

That's cute.

Kids area upstairs.

I'm especially excited for it.

It's always fun to do something extra special for the little kids.

Staging is complete.

We were able to get the dock installed over the weekend.

And they've got a great spot on the water.

Gives them extra swimming space,

place to tie up the boat,

and get some out on the water.

So we just have that one last piece to put in today,

and then we're ready to go.

So, you know, we just went with a different shade of red.

But, all new paint job.

You can see that you still have a screened porch on part of it.

And new dock right up front.

So we went with a metal screw down roof.

Snow is gonna slide right off of it.

Never worry about that one again.

Exactly. You know, the camp was built before 1978.

So we tested for lead. You know, we didn't find any luckily.

We have been outside too long. Let's head on inside.

Can't wait.

When I think of the cabin in my head, from the water

with the framing of the trees, this is it.

And I open my eyes and it's the best possible version

of what we could have had.

this is my favorite part.

We wanted to make something

I feel like I always lacked a space,

where I could like, sit and think about my dad.

Definitely, just wonderful for all... all of us to rally around.

We had 11 weeks and $65,000

to really update the camp,

the plumbing, the kitchen, the bathroom.

You know, new loft space for more sleeping space.

More comfortable hanging-out area.

And just making the place ready for all the kids.

It's ready to go.
