My first grandson! I've got a grandson!

Mom, why are you crying?

Weiguo, you're great!

My grandson!

Great.

Dad.

Congratulations!

You're a dad now.

Well done.

Mom.

Mom.

Why don't you sleep inside?

I'm not tired.

Aren't you? You were asleep.

Give me.

What's wrong, Mom?

- Numb. Numb. - Numb?

Good.

Not tired, huh?

Alright, alright.

Let me see.

Mom.

Why don't you give him a name?

Shall I?

Yes.

By the way,

Jiawen,

the power went out the day you gave birth.

When he was born, the lights came on.

Isn't it obvious?

Guangming, means "light".

Ok, let's call you Chen Guangming.

You brought light.

Chen Guangming.

(Spring, 1984)

Be careful. It's hot.

The food is ready.

Dad, what day is it today?

Why did you call us home

and cook so much food

to feast?

Your dad has some big news to announce.

You're being dramatic.

Don't listen to your mom.

- Just say it. - It's not that formal.

I just have something

to tell you.

(He Jiahuan, He's fourth daughter)

(He Jiaxi, Sixth daughter, Liu Xiaoling, Fifth daughter)

From today,

I am

a Party member.

Great.

Congratulations, Dad.

- Congratulations, Dad. - Dad, congrats!

- Dad. - Come on.

Dad!

Congratulations.

- Congratulations, Dad. - Congratulations.

Congratulations, Dad.

You got what you wanted.

- Xiaonian, stand up. - Congrats, Grandpa.

Let's drink to Mom, too.

Mom, thanks for your hard work.

This is to you.

- To Mom. - Come on, Mom.

Follow your dad's example.

Can we eat now?

Can we eat now?

Congratulations.

Dad,

the organization can see

that you've been seeking to improve.

And skilled people like you

are in high demand.

You can use your skills

to start a small business.

The market is open now.

The East Market in the North

is full of legitimate small businesses.

If you open a fur shop,

you'll earn 10,000 yuan in no time.

Are you asking me,

a man with a regular job,

to open a fur shop?

Your skill is worth a lot of money.

Let's hear what Jianguo has to say.

If you ask me,

it's better to wait for your retirement.

Though things are looking good,

we shouldn't be reckless.

Stay steady.

It's good to be steady.

Dad,

congratulations again.

Dad, congratulations.

Dad.

Let's drink to your dad together.

- To Dad. - To Dad.

- Ok. - Congratulations to Dad.

To the Party member!

Have you thought about getting a boyfriend?

No.

You can think about it now.

But I don't have a target.

May I help you?

The second nephew

of my second brother-in-law, again?

Why are you still complaining?

They just want you to meet.

The point is, he's not a bad guy.

Whoever thinks he's good should go.

Jiawen got the good guy,

but the fat, dark, and ugly one

is left to me.

What am I?

Do I have to take whatever she doesn't want?

If so, I won't call her Sister again.

I should call her Auntie instead.

She moves up the rank fast.

No way! I'm not going!

Enough. you've made your point.

Don't be so harsh.

This one works at the paper mill.

He's got a good job

and good looks.

If you have time,

go and meet him.

You may make one more friend.

The paper mill?

How old is he?

Do you have a photo?

Why don't you go and meet him in person?

It's no big deal.

Come with me.

He's in the pavilion.

I'm not going up with you.

Jiali, how do I look?

You look good.

Go ahead.

Hello.

I'm He Jiayi.

Do we know each other?

He Jiayi.

Hello, I'm Wu Suowei.

He Jiayi! He Jiayi!

Where are you going?

Why do you always set me up with fat guys?

He's strong, not fat.

Why don't you just get me a pig

from the meat processing plant?

Why are you so mean?

In your eyes,

am I only worthy of a man like this?

Like what?

You're skinny.

Make up for what you lack.

Jiayi,

what are you doing here?

Do you like collecting stamps?

No.

No?

You're almost lost in it.

Do you dare to go to Shanghai?

Where?

Forget it.

Of course.

What wouldn't I dare?

I dare to do anything for you.

Aren't you afraid of losing your job?

I can find another job.

Anyway, I will defy

all difficulties and danger for you.

When are we going?

Go get tickets now.

I'll go to the office and ask for leave.

We're going tomorrow.

Ok.

I'll go buy the tickets.

See you tomorrow.

- Mom. - You scared me.

- What's up? - Mom.

I'm traveling on business tomorrow.

Where are you going?

Shanghai.

The factory sent me to Shanghai

for an exhibition.

Did you tell your dad?

Dad isn't home.

Shouldn't they send the salesmen?

Why did they send you?

I'm going to learn.

Our products will be exported

and should be introduced to the public.

I know them well.

How many of you are going?

Five.

Ok.

Stay with the group.

Don't run around.

Got it.

Attention, travelers.

The train to Shanghai is about to depart.

Please get on the train.

Excuse me.

Go.

(Shanghai)

(Fudeli)

Turn left.

- Jiayi. - Where is it, exactly?

Don't worry. I'm looking.

Let me ask.

Hello.

Hello.

What do you want? Take a look.

I'm not buying magazines.

I want to ask for directions.

I was told

there's a guesthouse in the neighborhood,

but I couldn't find it.

Guesthouse?

No.

But there's a small hotel.

Where is it?

There.

(Uncle Gu's Hotel)

That's it.

Let's go.

- Thank you. - You're welcome.

- Thanks. - You're welcome.

Come.

(Uncle Gu's Hotel)

Let's go shopping later.

- They have a lot of fabrics - Okay.

that we don't have at home.

Ma'am,

any rooms left?

Just one.

I'll take it.

No, not one.

We need two.

You can stay in one room.

No, we need two.

Look, we've had a long day.

Would you please

spare us another room?

Any room will do.

The reception room, then.

It's not that good.

I'll cut the charge by half.

But you must help with the night shift.

Ok.

I think it's fine.

I'll stay here.

Ok, let me check you in.

What's your name?

Ouyang Bao.

Ouyang Bao.

What's hers?

He Jiayi.

He Jiayi.

(Uncle Gu's Hotel)

Hi, bro.

Did you check in?

Yes.

Come here.

Thank you for helping us.

Don't mention it.

Would you like one?

Oh...

No, I don't read such things.

I've got something else, from China Hong Kong.

China Hong Kong?

Show me.

(Beauty in the Fog)

This is good.

(Beauty in the Fog)

Ouyang.

You're still up?

What's in your hand?

Nothing. Pictorial.

Give me.

Where did you get it?

Jiayi,

I...

I...

I bought it at the bookstall.

You can get everything in Shanghai.

I'm sorry, Jiayi.

I was wrong.

About what?

I was wrong

to watch such unhealthy things.

I'll never do it again,

never.

Ouyang Bao.

Yes.

Tell me the truth.

Who means the most to you in your life?

You, of course.

Isn't it your dad?

My dad

and my mom

brought me into this world.

They raised me.

But because I came into this world,

I met you,

found the meaning of life,

and saw the hope in life.

You are just saying it.

Who can be good to someone forever?

I can be good to you forever.

What if you betray me?

I won't betray you.

I'll give up

anything for you,

as long as you're with me.

Still, I can't marry you.

Why?

Because I want my own place.

I want 5,000 yuan for the bride-price.

I want to be the hostess of my family.

You can't do any of those

or give me any of those.

I can do it!

I can give it to you!

Whatever you want,

I can give it to you.

I swear!

Still, my parents

won't agree easily.

I got a call from Mom

at work today.

She said she'd come over

after my aunt's funeral.

Really?

She'll probably be here in a few days.

Go pick her up when she arrives.

I will, of course.

Great.

Your mom left in 1969,

when Jiali went to the countryside.

It's been 15 years.

- Yes. - It's time for her to come back.

The girls got jobs

and married one by one.

Our burden is less now.

Your mom's coming over just in time

for the family union.

They say mothers-in-law

and daughters-in-law are natural enemies.

But my wife is reasonable.

- Cut the crap. - It's been years

and you've never fought

with your mother-in-law.

My mom was lucky to have you.

You're wrong.

I'm lucky to have a good mother-in-law.

What's wrong with you?

You know your mom's coming.

Why go on a business trip?

I'm the best at acquiring furs.

Also, I'm a Party member.

Your consciousness has been raised.

I should take the lead, right?

How long will you be in Zhenjiang?

A week at most.

Don't forget about Jiahuan.

What? About who?

About Jiahuan.

Ok. When I get back,

I'll pull strings for her.

Jiayi will be back in a few days.

As for

Jiayi,

why don't you

ask Jiali to help her find a date?

I know

it's hard for them to agree.

But I can work with you.

We'll work together

to make them agree as soon as possible.

By helping you,

I'm helping myself.

Believe me.

Anyway, not that Ouyang.

Look how poor his family is.

You...

You should look if the guy is good.

I was penniless back then,

but you still chose me, right?

I thought your mom was good.

- Liar. - Do you think it was you?

Done.

All packed up.

To find the right boyfriends for the girls,

we must take our time.

We shouldn't rush it,

right?

Changsheng,

wait!

What's wrong?

Why didn't you bring the money?

Didn't I told you

I have enough money?

Enough.

Don't be hard on yourself when you're out.

What if you need it?

Then I'll spend it all.

Go ahead.

Remember to bring me candies.

(Tianjia'an)

Grandma should be...

Yes.

Mom.

- Grandma. - Grandma.

- Mom. - Grandma.

- Grandma. - Here.

- Jiali. - Grandma.

- Grandma. - Jiawen.

Grandma.

Mom, you haven't been back in 15 years.

Yes.

Mom,

you're older than when I went home

to see you eight years ago.

A man seldom lives to be 70.

I'm over 70.

It's natural that I'm old.

Luckily, I still walk well.

That's good.

Grandma.

You're back.

Jiali.

Jiawen.

You're both moms.

Xiaonian, call Great-grandma.

Great-grandma.

What are you waiting for?

Grandma.

Stop. Let me guess.

Jiaxi.

Xiaoling.

Grandma, we all look forward to your return.

I'm sorry.

I wasn't here when you were born.

I'm so sorry.

Let's go home.

Go home.

Your dad must be happy to see Xiaonian.

Meixin.

I can't believe Changsheng.

He didn't even tell me that he left.

He was in a hurry and forgot.

I've been thinking

about seeing you these days.

I haven't rested well.

My right eyelid keeps twitching.

It's ok.

- What's wrong? - Xiaoling.

Light that candle in your drawer

and bring it here. It's dark.

Coming.

Be careful.

Here.

Here.

Be Steady.

Is you eyelid still twitching?

You taught me this.

A piece of white paper on your eyelid

turns ill luck into good.

Where did Changsheng go?

Some cattle ranch in Zhenjiang.

Did he give you the number there?

Call him and tell him

I'm home.

Tell him not to worry.

It's ok. Don't worry about it.

He'll be back in a few days when he's done.

Ok.

What are you doing?

Stay away!

I'm sorry.

It's ok.

He's just a kid.

It's going to rain.

Is it to your taste?

- It's good. - I'm glad to hear it.

Kid!

Are you ok?

Yes.

Meixin!

Coming.

Meixin.

Meixin.

You...

- What's the rush? - The Bureau...

What's up?

The Bureau called

and asked you to go to Zhenjiang.

To Zhenjiang?

What for?

It seems...

It seems that He is sick.

He is sick?

Stay safe on the way.

Yes.

Is it here?

This is the train.

This is the car.

Why don't you take me?

I don't feel ease

until I see your dad.

Mom, don't worry.

When we get there, we'll call you

and keep you posted.

Yes, Mom.

Let's not slow them down.

Call us when you get there.

Rest assured. We're leaving.

Ok.

Go back home.

- Go home. - Stay safe on the road.

Move your feet, please.

Anyone needs melon seeds or peanuts?

Excuse me,

what's all this?

This is pork sausage, a Shanghai specialty.

It's freshly made.

(Pork Sausage) Would you like to buy some?

Shall we buy some Shanghai specialties?

No.

- Peanuts, melon seeds. - You don't even know

what they did to me.

Those guys they set me up with...

Alright, forget about it.

I should thank them.

I got a chance because of them.

If you're mad at them,

just think that it isn't for them.

Think that it's for Dad.

Dad is a good man,

sensible man.

What do you think?

Dad,

we're taking you home.

Jiali, are you alright?

- Dad. - You care about your mom.

Shouldn't I care about you?

We have always

been proud of you.

Our eldest daughter is so good.

She's much better than a son.

You said

you'd protect Dad,

Mom,

Grandma, and your sisters.

If anything happens to Dad,

will you protect the family?

We have to tell Mom the truth.

But we'd better keep it from Grandma.

I know.

But she is clever.

She didn't need details

to figure it out.

It's better to give her some time

and tell her slowly.

Why can't I stop the tears?

Jiali.

Jiawen.

So,

did Jianguo take your dad back?

What happened?

What happened to him?

Tell me.

You tell me.

Mom.

Where's your dad?

Dad...

He had a car accident.

He's gone.

Mom.

- Mom. - Mom.

Mom.

How come?

How come he's gone?

Mom, you have to hold on.

Think about Grandma.

(Yanhuai Road)

Grandma.

Take a break.

- Give it to me. - You're back.

Jiayi.

Jiayi.

Grandma.

Jiayi.

Grandma.

Jiayi.

You've grown so much.

I was on a business trip.

They told me.

When will Changsheng be back?

In seven or eight days.

Seven or eight more days?

I haven't seen him in years.

If he doesn't come back,

I'm afraid I won't recognize him.

Grandma,

we'll call Dad and urge him.

Call him today.

Grandma, let me tell you the truth.

Dad was arrested

in Zhenjiang.

Arrested?

Did you see him?

Yes.

Why?

Because...

I didn't see it.

I don't know.

It's Heavens' business.

Your dad has never done anything bad.

Why did they arrest him?

What can the Heavens do to him?

Jiali.

Mom!

Mom!

There's someone from Dad's workplace.

This is Mr. Wang, the Deputy Party Secretary.

Ma'am,

I'm sorry for your loss.

Why?

He Changsheng was a good comrade.

He had just joined the Party before he died.

It's such a shame.

What are you talking about?

Meixin!

Mom.

Changsheng is gone.

Mom.

Grandma.

Changsheng is gone.

Grandma.

Hurry, hold Grandma!

- Hold Grandma. - Grandma.

- Grandma. - Grandma.

- Mom. - Grandma.

Grandma.

- Mom. - Grandma.

- Grandma. - Mom.

Grandma.

Weiguo and I will handle

the compensation for the accident

and Dad's death benefit.

Mom, don't cry.

I'm leaving.

I'm worried about my grandma.

I'm afraid Mom and Grandma will collapse.

Dad's gone, but our family can't fall apart.

I've got to buck up.

We have a lot of work to do.

Jiawen is married.

But Jiahuan, Xiaoling, and Jiaxi

haven't started working.

They all have to get married.

One step at a time.

Dad died as a hero.

Normally,

one of the girls should get his job.

(Yanhuai Lu)

Why is it so unfair?

Those who shouldn't be dead are dead.

Those who should

are still alive.

They need people in heaven.

Those who were capable

were taken away.

I don't know why we should live.

You mustn't think that way.

No matter who falls,

you can't.

The girls are still young.

They haven't started working.

You'll have to take care of

what Changsheng hadn't done yet.

You have to take care of it.

Sometimes

when I walk by the river,

I just want to jump in.

Don't do such a silly thing, Meixin.

Hello, Mrs. Chen.

I have to go now.

Meixin, I'm leaving.

Thank you.

I'll walk you out.

- No, thanks. - I'll do it.

No, no.

Jiali,

comfort your mom and grandma.

Ok, stop here.

Goodbye.

Are you cooking Chinese medicine?

Who's sick?

Your mom's stomach is acting up again.

Grandma,

Mom,

I'm staying home for a while.

Don't you have to take care of your family?

Jianguo can do it.

Dad's gone.

I'm afraid the girls won't behave.

They have to date,

get married, and have children.

There's so much to do.

Mom, don't worry. One step at a time.

If anything comes up,

we will work it out together.

Your dad loved Jianguo

and thought of him as a son.

Let Jianguo be the head of the family.

Grandma, I don't think

there should be three surnames in one family.

Dad thought highly of Jianguo

and Jianguo is dedicated to our family.

But I have several younger sisters.

Jianguo can advise us

and be our counselor.

When it comes to specific matters,

we should make our own decisions.

We'll do as Jiali says.

Jianguo will help out,

but we should

make our own decisions.

Dad died as a hero.

At least,

one of the girls can take his job.

I don't know

whether we can or not.

I'll go to his office tomorrow.

They must give us an answer.

At least one job offer.

I've worked with your dad for years.

If there's an opportunity,

don't you think

I will think about it?

So, is someone

obstructing it?

No one's obstructing it.

You should

be patient.

Wait a little bit.

In the next recruitment,

when we get a quota, we'll give it to you.

Then write me a guarantee.

You're such a stubborn girl.

Mr. Zhang, I have no choice.

How about a verbal guarantee?

At the latest,

two months.

Two months?

After Gaokao is over, ok?
