but safety is a big issue with us.

Russ, we're happy to be here.

It's a nice change from Oahu.

I might even do some sightseeing while I'm here.

I never saw that volcano.

There's a car rental, booked under your name

and I've made some reservations for rooms at the Hilton Waikoloa.

Ah, I've stayed there before. It's a fun hotel. Lots to do.

As soon as we get there, I'm heading straight for the beach.

[suspenseful music]

Somebody, please, help my husband.

Oh, John?

Oh, my God. somebody please help my husband!

John! Are you okay? Please, somebody help!

Hurry! Help him.

Please, somebody help him!

Please, somebody help my husband. Oh, my God.

Please.

-Jessie? -Kekoa!

Quick! Help me swim him in.

[opening theme song]

[slow music]

[man] I called the hospital. They're waiting for us.

[wife] I guess it caught him, he was floating, I'm not sure.

-[police man] Okay. -I don't know.

I don't like it. He got dumped really hard

and he doesn't have any feelings in his hands and legs.

I didn't have a chance earlier to thank you both.

Without you, he would have drowned.

-[crying] -Try not to worry, Sarah.

We're gonna come by the hospital and make sure you're okay.

Okay. Thank you.

[sighs] Jessie.

-[chuckles] -What are you doing here?

-[siren wailing] -Oh, and thank you.

I don't know if I could have gotten him out without you.

I thought my Baywatch days were over.

[laughs]

I never got a chance to complete in the Iron Man last year,

so I'm back to give it another try.

How's baby Luke? How are you coping?

It's been tough since Richard left.

No chance of a reconciliation?

[chuckles] Doesn't look like that.

It's especially hard when I don't have the bonus of a trainer like JD.

Jessie, about JD.

I heard.

Congratulations on your engagement.

It's wonderful news.

You knew?

Yeah, sure. I heard from JD. He wrote me.

We just heard. Is everything all right?

Victim has a possible neck fracture.

Jessie?

How you doing, JD?

Jessie Owens, a flash from the past. How are you, girl?

-Great. How are you, Sean? -Good.

Jessie, it's good to see you. Let me guess, Iron Man?

[Kekoa] JD, Jessie and I are going to go to the hospital.

I'll see you back at the hotel.

[very softly] Okay.

[soft music]

It's not good news. It's a T5 break,

which means there's going to be some paralysis.

How extensive?

Too early to say. For the moment we want to monitor him.

Then we'll do a stabilizing procedure

to better determine a long term prognosis.

I'm sorry.

Thanks, we got her.

The doctors are saying...

[cries]

We're so sorry.

If there's anything we can do.

No... there's nothing anyone can do now.

Nothing.

[cries softly]

[slow music]

Is something wrong, K?

I don't know. You tell me.

Tell you what?

You want to let me in on this?

Did you know Jessie was going to be here for the Iron Man?

No. Of course not. How could I have known that?

Jessie knew we were getting married.

Any idea how she knew about that?

No.

-Maybe she heard from Sean or... -Don't lie to me, JD.

You've been writing to her, for God's sake.

Is there anything else you want to let me in on?

Look, Kekoa. I wrote her once, okay? That's all.

Jessie and I go back a long way. And honestly...

That'd be nice for a change.

I wanted to tell her how happy we were.

I was... I was gloating in a way, okay?

Well, you should have told me.

Who didn't you trust, me or you?

[phone ringing]

[sighs]

Yeah?

Sure. He's right here.

It's Jessie. She wants you to help her train.

[slow music]

[door closes]

Yeah.

[dolphins clicking]

Hey.

Hey.

Sure you want to do this?

JD, right now, I'd be lucky to even complete the race.

My times are way down and I just can't seem to get the drive.

I can't get to the next level.

It's not the same as last year.

[huffs] A lot of things have changed from last year.

Please, it's just for this week.

All right, I'll speak to Russ.

And... maybe take some time off.

Thanks, JD. I'll make you proud. You'll see.

[soft music]

When do you want to start?

There's just one more thing.

Here. I'd like you to meet baby Luke.

-Oh. -[Jessie laughs]

-What do you think? -God, Jessie, he's... he's beautiful.

-Hi. -You're a natural, JD.

Notice anything in particular?

He's a boy?

Look at his eyes.

He's got his father's eyes.

Wait a minute. You're not saying...

Are you?

This...

he's...

he's mine?

He sure looks like you, doesn't he?

[Russ] Plus, there will be medical officers on all of these boats,

as well as lifeguards positioned every 200 yards in kayaks.

Sean, this is where Baywatch can help.

You can have your team cover the south leg,

then the Kona lifeguards can handle the rest.

-No problem. -Morning everyone. Sorry I'm late.

We're just finishing up, JD.

Sean can fill you in. It's pretty straightforward.

-That's great. -Okay, so any questions?

All right.

Sean, I gotta talk to you about Jessie.

Yeah, I heard.

You heard? About what?

The training. I told Jessie it was fine.

No, there's more to it than that.

Oh, you mean Kekoa.

Well, yeah, but--

Look, I trust the two of you to have a relationship and still be on the team,

but I can't help you negotiate between Jessie and Kekoa.

Sean, it's more complicated than that.

Yeah, it always is, isn't it?

We got about a week left before we start full time with Russ and the guys.

I need some time to get outta here and unwind.

Yeah, of course. You deserve it.

Jessie and I start training, tomorrow.

Look, JD, I tell you what, I'm hiking up to the volcano.

When I get back, we can talk about this some more, okay?

Yeah.

Sean, here you are.

I marked up some good trials for you.

So, hopefully, you won't get too lost.

All right, what I was gonna do was drive part of the way and hike the rest.

Should be fine.

Ah, one thing.

Don't ignore any lady hitchhikers on the way up.

Could be Madam Pele in disguise.

Pele?

Fire Goddess of the volcano and not to be disrespected.

Russ, I know who she is.

What happens if I don't pick her up?

[chuckles] Bad luck, brother. Lots of bad luck.

Look, ya know, I'm a practical sort of guy.

I don't really buy into that thing.

Okay. But don't say you weren't warned.

-[panting] -C'mon, Jessie, hang in there.

Breath.

Even pace, Jessie.

-Keep your pacing regular. -[panting]

Jessie, stop. Let's take a break.

Jessie, this is ridiculous.

There's no way I can get you to competition level

between now and the race.

I don't expect to win.

I just want to finish the race.

Jessie, this is the Iron Man.

The toughest triathlon in the world.

You promised to train me, JD.

I know, but so soon after having a baby?

People train for this event for a year.

What were you thinking?

The baby is irrelevant, JD.

You should have told me sooner.

I had a right to know.

Is that what this is about?

How come you never told me you were seeing Kekoa?

The first I hear, you tell me you're engaged to her.

Jessie, I'm not doing this.

Let's get back to work.

[suspense music]

I'm a practical sort of guy. Right?

Right.

I don't buy into that stuff. Right?

Oh.

Hi.

Hi.

Here, I bought you some clothes and I put some magazines in there, too.

Thanks.

So, how's John doing?

Okay.

Listen, Kekoa, I really don't want to keep throwing my problems on you and...

Sarah, I want to help.

Tell me.

[slow music]

He... he won't have the stabilizing operation.

He says there's no point.

He's not going to live the rest of his life as a quadriplegic.

[crying] God, he says he'd rather die.

Sarah, you can't let that happen. What about counseling?

I tried.

What about your baby? He's got to want to see his son.

He won't even discuss it.

Sarah, I'm so sorry.

[crying] God, I don't know what I'm going to do.

I don't know what I'm going...

It's okay.

[suspenseful music]

[pop]

[softly] Damn.

No spare.

[scoffs]

[beeps]

No signal. Okay.

[music continues]

Thanks for hanging in with me, JD.

It's okay, really.

I was being kind of a jerk.

This thing with the baby got me all confused.

I understand. And you're right.

I should have told you earlier.

Because of Kekoa, right?

I thought I could handle it.

I was...

Up until I saw you, that is...

I'm okay, now.

Jessie, it doesn't have to be that way.

I realize now I have responsibilities.

I want to take care of my child.

Aren't you forgetting something? What about Kekoa?

I'm not forgetting about Kekoa.

It may take a little time, but we'll work it out.

JD, you're engaged to Kekoa.

I know, but...

JD, please, stop worrying about me.

I can take care of Luke. We'll be fine.

[slow music]

Jess, no, no.

[woman far away] Help.

Where are you?

[woman] Over here.

All right. Keep shouting. I'll find you.

[woman] Over here. I fell in a hole.

Keep talking to me. I'm on my way.

[woman] Help me, please.

Over here. I'm right here.

All right, hang on. I'm coming down.

Oh.

[suspense music]

Didn't I see you...?

[soft music]

d Ohd

d Yeahd

d How can I let you know How much I feel for youd

d Baby, you just do so many thingsd

d That wanna make me fall in loved

You hardly said a word all evening.

And now you're gonna leave without saying good-bye?

What's going on, JD?

What do you mean? We talked about this.

I'm going to train Jessie.

Why are you sneaking around here like you're on some guilt trip?

Look, I came here to do our job and to be with you.

I sure wasn't looking for an extra gig training Jessie.

You two cooked that up.

Because I thought our relationship was much stronger

than any relationship you had with Jessie.

And it is.

But now I'm not sure it feels right.

You understand?

It's...

it's weird, ya know?

What I know is that you've been acting weird

since Jessie stepped in front of your face.

Kekoa...

[sighs]

I have to tell you something.

I haven't told you 'til now

because I've been trying to figure out the right thing to do.

It looks like...

I mean...

I'm... the father of Jessie's baby.

You're?

[slow music]

How... how is that possible?

Look, we can work this out.

Just because I have this baby, it doesn't mean

it changes anything between you and me.

What are you talking about, JD?

You're the father of Jessie's baby and that doesn't change things?

It doesn't have to.

I just need some time to figure things out.

Kekoa, you gotta believe me.

Getting married to you is more important than anything.

Even the baby.

I can't hear anymore of this, JD.

Go train with Jessie.

I need some time,

and when you get back,

I'll let you know whether or not we're still getting married.

Kekoa, c'mon.

Just go, JD. Just leave.

[suspense music]

How'd you sleep?

Fine, I guess.

Here, have some coffee.

Thanks.

How did we... get here?

[laughs] You don't remember?

To tell you the truth, I don't remember much of anything.

Mm, the mountain can do that to you.

It's the air. It's different up here.

So, ah, how did you find this place?

I live here.

Nobody knows the mountain better than I do.

Well, great. Because, I have no idea where we are

and I need directions up to the crater.

I can't believe you're just going to leave me here.

After last night, I would have thought...

Whoa, whoa, whoa, last night? What happened last night?

You don't remember that either?

[chuckles] You are in a bad way.

[suspense music]

[woman] I was hoping you were going to accompany me down the mountain.

You wouldn't want me to fall into more holes, would you?

No, no, I...

I wouldn't. Ah...

Look...

I...

I was really hoping on getting up to see the crater.

Since you know the mountain,

maybe we could go together.

It's too far.

Trust me, we're better off going down the mountain.

This is really, really important to me.

What the hell is that?

[things trembling]

It's an earthquake.

Don't worry. It's just a little one.

Quick, under the table.

[laughing]

[laughing] Did you have something in mind?

Your safety, that's all.

Very impressive.

Are you this chivalrous with every woman you meet?

I'm a lifeguard. It, ah, comes with the territory.

You know, these tremors happen a lot on Mauna Loa.

Legend has it they act as a warning of further eruptions.

I really think we should be going down.

Both of us.

Look, I'm not going to be scared away by some half-assed legend, okay?

So, does stubbornness come with the territory, as well?

I guess it must.

[suspense music]

I think I'll go outside for some air.

-Oh, oh, my ankle, oh. -Okay.

-I think it's broken. -Come over here.

Oh, damn, oh.

[moaning]

Well, it's not broken. It's a sprain, at the worst.

Well, I can't walk on it.

So now you'll have to take me down the mountain.

Uh huh.

Sarah?

Kekoa, thank you so much for coming.

So, what's going on?

[voice trembling] Um... it's John.

[sighs] He still won't have the operation to stabilize and...

We're on vacation, you know?

He... he runs into the ocean, laughing,

"One more ride."

And in a second, it's all changed.

It just ripped us apart.

And the man who could hardly wait to be a father,

who loved every minute of every day, now he wants to give up.

You can't let him, Sarah.

I know. I know, but how do I get to him?

How do I make him see that I need him?

No matter...

what's happened, no matter what the future is.

God, I can't see it without him.

I guess the only way to make John understand

is to look him in the eyes

and tell him over and over again, until he believes you.

You don't want him to give up, Sarah.

So you shouldn't give up, either.

Keep fighting?

Fight like hell, sister.

Sometimes that's the only way to wake a man up.

[sighs]

[soft music]

I thought I'd find you here.

It's a good place to sit and think.

Come to any decisions?

Not yet.

Well, I have.

I realized something at the hospital today.

I'm not giving up on you, JD.

No matter what happens with Jessie,

no matter what relationships or children come crawling out of your past.

I love you.

And I'm not letting you go.

[man over speaker] Next stop the Hilton Waikoloa Village landing pavilion.

Please watch your step.

Jessie, we... we need to talk.

Jessie, last year, when we were together, it was the best year of my life.

We had some great times and I wanted us to stay together.

But, if I'm totally honest,

I guess I didn't want it bad enough.

If I had, we'd be together, now.

So, what about the letter? Just wounded pride?

Just letting go. As gently as I knew how.

Jessie, until you left, I didn't really know Kekoa.

I was too preoccupied with you.

She never pushed herself on me.

I only knew her as someone I worked with and respected.

Then one day I woke up. I knew.

This was the woman I was going to spend the rest of my life with.

When I saw you here,

the feelings I had were feelings of guilt,

that I had let you go.

I got them confused with how things used to be.

And Luke?

What about him?

Jessie, I've gone over this a thousand times in my head.

I will do whatever it takes to support you in raising Luke.

But first, I need to know the truth.

Is Luke really my child?

[slow music]

Well, it looks like the end of the trail.

Almost. This is where I leave you.

I can make it back from here.

Wow. We've come this far together.

I'd like to be sure you make it back okay.

I'll be fine. Don't worry.

Listen, I was.... I was wondering...

If you could see me again?

Yeah. Something like that.

I'm sorry, but my situation is... it's far from straightforward.

Hey!

How do I make it back?

Follow the path along the cliff top.

It'll take you back to civilization.

You can use your cell phone from there.

[tense music]

[panting]

[Jessie] Help! Please, help.

-Oh, God. Help! -JD, Kekoa. Are you there?

-We read you, Sean. - All right, look,

I'm at the cliffs at Leina Point.

I gotta swimmer in trouble. I need a Jet Ski ASAP.

I'm going in after her. And JD,

try and judge the sets, all right?

You're gonna have to ride one in and keep going.

-Please! -Won't be time to stop.

Copy that. Sean, it could be Jessie.

She was supposed to train in that area today.

That's not good news.

The currents can be pretty treacherous around there.

-We're going to need 2 Jet Skis. -Sean, we're on our way.

Help!

[tense music]

Somebody help!

Please!

Somebody!

[tense music continues]

[panting]

[coughing]

[panting]

JD! Kekoa!

Over here!

[JD] Hey. I see them.

Okay, I'm going in.

If I don't get them both, circle around and go in hard!

Don't stop!

JD, be careful.

She's on! Go! Go! Go!

[tense music continues]

I'm on! Go! Go!

[knocking on door]

Ah, Jessie.

Ah, JD's not here right now. But he'll be back. He's with Sean.

Actually, Kekoa, I wanted to see you.

[soft music]

It's a beautiful view.

Yes, it is.

I came to apologize, to explain.

JD's not Luke's father.

Richard is.

Then why did you...?

I met Richard on the rebound from my break-up with JD.

He adored me and I thought that I was in love with him.

I wasn't. But by then it was too late.

I was already pregnant with Luke.

And what was going on between JD and me didn't matter.

Kekoa, you have every right to be angry.

You know, that Asian and Hawaiian upbringing I had,

it teaches you to be tough.

But it also teaches you about compassion.

Jessie, I realize coming here must've been incredibly difficult for you.

I remember Jessie, the friend I used to know and love.

That's the real you.

I'm gonna go to the hospital tomorrow and visit Sarah.

Why don't you come along and bring Luke?

Sarah says she would love to see him.

I will.

Do you think we can do it in the afternoon?

There's something I have to do in the morning.

[man over speaker] Swimmers, take your mark.

[people cheering]

[soft music continues]

[people cheering]

Last report had her one hundred and fifty first.

Well, at least she's gonna finish. That was her goal.

Here she comes.

[happy yell]

-[cheering] -You did it!

-I told you I'd make you proud. -You made us all proud.

Nice job, Jessie.

Listen, you feel like doing some duty on the tower?

Does it have to be today?

Whenever you want. There's always a job for you at Baywatch.

Let us know.

Congratulations, Jessie. You did it.

You conquered the Iron Man.

With a little help from my friends.

[soft music]

[monitor sound]

d Yeahd

d How can I let you know How much I feel for youd

d Baby, you just do...d

[Kekoa] Knock, knock.

[Sarah] Come in.

-Hi. -This is for you.

-You like orchids, right? -Oh. It's beautiful.

Thank you for coming, Kekoa.

And Jessie, congratulations on completing the Iron Man.

-That's terrific. -Thanks.

I was told that you wanted to meet someone.

[Sarah] This is Luke?

-Yes. -Ah, he's beautiful.

[laughs]

-Oh. How old is he now? -Four months.

Ah.

[laughs and makes cooing sounds]

John, these are my friends I told you about.

And this is Jessie's baby boy.

Isn't he beautiful?

[Luke gurgles]

[Sarah] Yes.

d It ain't nothing I wanna do Without you, babyd

-Thanks for everything, Russ. -Okay, man.

-All right. -Come back real soon, brother.

Oh, I will. Soon as those 30 footers start rolling in.

Sure. You say that every year.

We're going to hike to the top of the volcano.

And if you've never seen it before,

it is spectacular, over 14 thousand feet to the summit.

I'm telling you, I love it up there so much,

sometimes I feel like I almost live there.

But first, we have to collect our bags. So, come along.

d You better think about itd

d Before you faced it all again...d
