the murder of Biggie Smalls

was commissioned by
Suge Knight.

And the last living
eyewitness to Tupac's murder

is telling his story.

By 2005, Suge Knight's celebrity

was a shell of its former self.

It suddenly became not cool
anymore to be Suge Knight.

Bad record deals,
not paying his artists,

gangster stuff that he did.

It all just came home to roost.

All of the bad karma
came to find him.

On top of losing
everything,

Suge is still connected to

the Tupac Shakur
and Biggie Smalls murders,

which never have been solved.

like a Hollywood movie.

Rapper Tupac Shakur is gunned
down in September of 1996.

Six months later,
rapper Notorious B.I.G.

is shot to death
in Los Angeles.

At "Vibe,"
we spent a lot of time

trying to figure out why
the cops couldn't figure it out,

and why nobody was being

brought to justice for
Tupac's or Biggie's murder.

How are these
murders unsolved?

They both happened on
crowded streets.

There were dozens of witnesses.

How is it possible that both
these shooters got away with it?

Looking at how both of these
murders didn't get solved...

... people still suffering

and they need the closure,
they families need the closure.

Eight years...

three months
and 29 days...

today...

my son was murdered.

The truth will come out.

Voletta Wallace apparently
believed that LAPD officers

were involved in the murder.

She sued the LAPD
for $500 million,

which is Biggie's estimated
lifetime earning potential.

LAPD got really scared about
this potential suit,

so they brought in
LAPD detective Greg Kading

to reopen the case.

He demanded
a lot of respect

and developed a reputation

as a guy who could
really get things done.

I never would have imagined
that I'd end up

working on this murder case.

I didn't know
anything about

Biggie Smalls' murder
at the time.

This case is important,
not only to the families,

but to millions and millions
of fans around the world.

After reviewing the case,

we came to the decision that we
needed to form a task force,

so I started to
bring in and recruit people

from other agencies.

Since a lot of the information
they had gotten about

Tupac and Biggie
when it first happened

had come from my partner and I,
from Compton PD,

they wanted me
to join the task force.

(Greg)
LAPD, the FBI,
the ATF, the DEA--

there was a huge effort.

(birds chirping)

The first week,
we had 97 four-inch binders

worth of material to look at,

review, catalogue
and figure out

what has happened
in the last ten years.

There are three
prevailing theories

regarding the murder of
Biggie Smalls,

two of which
involve Suge Knight.

One is that there was
an unpaid debt

owed to the Southside Crips.

"The Los Angeles Times"
reported this week,

the Notorious B.I.G.

may have been killed by
Southside Compton Crips

over a money dispute.

(Carter)
According to Kading,

the Southside Crips were
pissed off with Puffy

because they thought
they were owed money.

They thought they had done
a favor for Puff and Biggie

by killing Tupac,

and when they didn't
get their money,

they retaliated
by killing Biggie.

(Greg)
We did everything
we possibly could

to look into
this theory,

but at the end of the day,

there was a lot of
false information

and lack of evidence.

(birds chirping)

Another theory was that
off-duty LAPD officers

carried out the murder
at the request of Suge Knight.

Suge Knight was affiliated
with the police,

and to some extent,

had the police force
on his side.

(Ben)
The Death Row payroll

included a lot of off-duty
and former cops from LA

who worked as security.

(woman)
The family of Notorious B.I.G
contends that a bloody rivalry

was going on between
Tupac's record company

and Wallace's label.

They say Mac and Perez
were hired to kill Wallace

as revenge for Tupac's murder.

There was good circumstantial
reason to believe

that could be true.

It was investigated,
but we just couldn't

make that connection
in regard to Biggie's murder.

The third theory
was that Suge Knight

had hired a gang member

in retaliation for
the murder of Tupac Shakur.

Allegedly,
Suge wanted revenge

for the death of Tupac,

so he hired a gang member
to murder

Puffy and Biggie,

and only Biggie
was in the car,

so Puffy lived and Biggie died.

(Greg)
There was so much documentation

showing gang associations

with both Bad Boy Records
and with the Southside Crips,

and Mob Piru affiliation

with Death Row Records
in Los Angeles,

but gangs aren't gonna snitch.

The code of the streets
that the gangs operated under

was never cooperate with police,

don't talk to the police,
you're a snitch.

(Greg)
The most frustrating
thing for me

was interviewing
hundreds of people,

including gang members,

and dealing with all
the misinformation

that had come in
with ill intentions

and false motives that
contaminated the case

and led it astray for years,

and we were
up against the clock.

The problem was
a lot of people had passed on.

Many of the Mob Piru affiliates
of Suge Knight's had died

and some of the Southside Crips

that we had determined were
associated with Bad Boy

had passed on.

But through
a process of elimination,

our big break in the case

is a guy named
Duane "Keffe D" Davis.

He's a Southside Crip,

kind of a shot-caller,
known drug dealer,

and he also happens to be
the uncle of Orlando Anderson.

(Tim)
Keffe D was in Las Vegas

at the same time of
Tupac's shooting

and had been at
the Petersen Museum,

speaking with Biggie Smalls

several minutes
before he was killed.

Keffe D was also a pretty
good-sized narcotics dealer

at the time.

He was moving up to
90, 100 kilos of cocaine

around the country.

During our investigation,
we became aware of a courier

and gave him the option
of either jail

or working on our behalf.

He chose
to work for us

and we utilized him
as an informant

to start to make
purchases of cocaine and PCP

directly from Keffe D.

(camera clicking)

It took time,
a lot of money and manpower,

but in the end, we got
what we wanted.

We told Keffe D, straight up,

we have an airtight case
against you.

You've got no way
to wiggle out of this,

so you either come clean

or else you got to prison
for the rest of your life.

When Greg Kading's task force
compelled Keffe D to confess,

they thought he was gonna
confess to Biggie's murder,

and instead, he said,
"That wasn't us."

(Greg)
So we're a little bit,

you know, disappointed,

but we realize, well,
what's he really saying?

"That one wasn't us."

So we then begin to make
inquiries about

Tupac Shakur's murder

and that's when
he breaks the case on that.

All right.

It was ten years ago today

that the prolific rapper
and actor Tupac Shakur

died in Las Vegas.

Six months later,
Notorious B.I.G. was killed.

And the rap world has
never been the same.

(Greg)
If anybody knew anything about
the murders of either

Biggie or Tupac,
it would be Keffe D.

(man)
Keffe D.

He was from Southside Crips,

one of they so-called
leaders over there.

(Tim)
They were natural
enemies with Mob Piru Bloods.

Suge Knight had Mob Piru
gang members

that were his
security and his entourage,

so it seemed these murders

were about the Crips versus
the Bloods in Compton.

(Greg)
In regard to Tupac's murder,

Suge Knight wasn't talking,

and so Duane "Keffe D" Davis

was one of the last
remaining witnesses.

... and rolling.

Getting Keffe D into a room
with his lawyer...

... and along with myself
and other agents...

... this was kind of
the moment of truth.

We talked to Keffe D
about his nephew Orlando.

At the time of Tupac's murder,

Orlando Anderson's name
was popping up everywhere.

He was the most obvious
initial suspect.

He was at the MGM.

In Compton, Orlando tried to
snatch one of the homies chains,

so Pac took off

and the fight broke out
in the hallway.

(Greg)
They just beat him down.

Hours later, Tupac is shot.

Orlando Anderson,
he's got the motive.

Las Vegas PD knew that,

but they just didn't have
the evidence to prosecute him.

(Greg)
Keffe D immediately starts to
plan on a retaliation.

(Greg)
Zip, Eric Martin,
says, "What do y'all need?"

Zip pulls out his Glock 40,

hands it to Keffe
and then the hunt's on.

Keffe D and his entourage
get into a white Cadillac.

Along with Keffe D,

the driver is a guy named
Terrence Brown.

They called him "Bubble Up."

Behind the driver
is DeAndre Smith.

He's in the left-rear
passenger seat.

And Keffe D.'s nephew,
Orlando Anderson,

is sitting behind
the right-front passenger seat.

All Southside Crips.

♪ Sniper with a... ♪

I ran the door
at the 662.

I seen Orlando and them

when they pulled up
in the Cadillac.

And I told my homies,
"The Southside's up here."

My homies that was at 662,

everybody had
their guns.

We knew it was
gonna be something.

They sat about five minutes.

Keffe D and crew
go back towards the strip.

(Greg)
Meanwhile, Tupac and Suge are
driving towards the 662 Club.

Behind them, there were some
girls screaming, "Tupac, Tupac."

Tupac!

Tupac!

When we interviewed him,

it was under much different
circumstances.

He had this kind of
"queen for a day,"

as they call it,
a proffer agreement,

where he could confess
to pretty much anything

and not have his words
used against him.

(Greg)
So he's safe to admit to us,

but he's not safe to
admit it publicly,

so he made it
explicitly clear that his nephew

Orlando Anderson was absolutely
the trigger man

that shot and killed Tupac.

(Greg)
So he grabs the guns,
leans across big Dre,

puts his hand out the window

and then just
starts pumping away.

The Cadillac makes a quick right
at the intersection

and disappears into the night.

Pac, stay strong!

Suge starts
heading towards a hospital

and hits a median...

(car crashing)

... and he comes to rest down on
Harmon and Las Vegas Boulevard.

September 7, 1996,
around 11:00 p.m.,

an officer came on the radio
saying that they had just heard

shots fired form
a number of vehicles,

so I started riding my bike
up the strip here

on Las Vegas Boulevard.

Tupac and Suge's vehicle
spun out at the intersection.

Suge is running around
like a maniac,

he's yelling, he's got
blood flying out of his head,

and I noticed that there
was somebody

still sitting in the car.

Turns out to be Tupac
and he starts to try to speak.

And I looked at him and I said,
"Who shot you?"

He got his breath together,

and he looked right in my eyes
and he said, "Fuck you."

They stashed the gun,

they walked out to
the intersection

on the way
back to their hotel

and the ambulance with

Tupac and Suge in it
are driving by.

(Greg)
During our
dealings with Keffe D,

he shows no remorse.

You know, and here
we are 20 years later...

... and his impression is that
this guy had it coming.

(Greg)
Keffe D is absolutely
a co-conspirator in a murder.

He is out there looking for
Tupac and Suge,

he gets a gun,

he knowingly hands the gun

to the individual
that shoots and kills Tupac.

Orlando would shoot
Tupac just on principle.

He's got his reputation
to defend.

(Carter)
We tracked down Anderson

and he ended up denying it.

From 1995 to date,
have you ever ridden

in a white Cadillac?

No.

Whether or not he was
telling the truth or lying,

to this day...
I don't know.

I mean, I'm like a victim.

I feel-- you know what
I'm saying-- sorry for him.

I see a lot of stories about
who killed Tupac.

Goddamn,
it's plain and simple,

it's in your face.

Orlando shot this man
because this man jumped him.

This is some gangbanging shit.

Tupac died
from gangbanging.

It shouldn't have never been
the Bloods against the Crips.

So how it
got there?

Because of Suge.

It was fantastic

to get some understanding
and some evidence

in the murder of
Tupac Shakur through Keffe D.

However, it's a little bit
bittersweet,

because our primary objective
was to solve Biggie's murder.

With plenty of potential
witnesses to a capital crime,

there have been no arrests.

The result for
Los Angeles Police,

Biggie's friends and millions
of fans is frustration

and speculation.

of the suspect do
you have, sir?

We have a male
black in his early 20s.

And that's the description
we have right now.

We eliminated
two of the three theories

for the Biggie Smalls murder.

It wasn't Southside Crips and it
wasn't rogue LAPD officers.

All that you have now

is the theory
that Suge Knight

had hired a gang member
to kill Biggie.

When Tupac died,

Suge had to say,

"We gotta kill these
motherfuckers."

Yeah, Suge didn't have a choice.

It's that mentality.

Tupac allegedly got
killed by Crips,

so if I lose a soldier,
you got to lose a soldier.

If I lose a general, you gonna
lose a general.

We begin to look at people
that we know

are closely associated
with Suge Knight,

who we believe
would be close to the action

and then put them
into a position

where it's
in their best interest

to cooperate with us.

As we're scouring through this
mountain of case files,

we see that a name
frequently comes up...

Theresa Swan, and that's
not her real name.

Theresa Swan was one of
Suge Knight's girlfriends.

She was the mother to
one of his kids.

(Greg)
She's got a criminal history.

She's got multiple
identities.

She's been doing
white-collar crimes

on behalf of Suge
over the years,

so we start to
zero in on her,

we do a search warrant
at her house.

We begin to
ask her about her history

and background with Suge Knight

and we begin to corroborate
information

that she's providing us.

(Mike)
Theresa Swan
was allegedly caught

in this auto-loan-fraud
situation with dealerships,

and that's what they basically
had over her

that they could use
to compel her to talk.

(Greg)
Just basically sit down with her
and say here's the situation.

You've got young kids.

You're facing
potential criminal charges.

If you go to jail,

your kids are gonna be
put into foster care

and all we want to
know is what you know.

She either now has to betray

a man that she had been
loyal to for many years,

happened to be the father of
one of her children,

but now she's looking at going
to jail and losing those kids.

Once we secure the cooperation
of Theresa Swan,

she is given
the same type of arrangement

with the US attorney's office
that Keffe D had,

that she's
protected from her own

self-incriminating statements.

She begins to then explain
what happened.

She explains that she
begins to have conversations

with Suge here in
Los Angeles,

in county jail, he tells her,

"I want you to get a hold of
this guy, Poochie,"

Wardell Fouse.

He's a criminal
associate of Suge's,

he's a Blood gang member.

(Tim)
It was well known that
Suge Knight had the Mob Piru,

basically ex-felons
and gang members

that were his
security and his entourage.

Poochie was the main enforcer
for Suge Knight.

Poochie was one of Suge boys.

Never trusted him.

Poochie was foul.

Suge hired Poochie

by getting the mother of
one of his kids to...

hand over money to Poochie

to get him to go out
and-- and kill Biggie.

Theresa Swan agrees to do it,

meets with Poochie,

and Poochie says, "You know,
give me this much money."

And she reports
this back to Suge.

Suge says, "No problem.

"We'll figure out a way
to get this money to you

where it's untraceable."

According to Theresa Swan,

Poochie was paid $13,000 for
the murder of Biggie Smalls,

and for her role in it,

Theresa Swan supposedly
was paid 12,000,

so it was
25,000 total for the hit.

The other vehicle
pulls up alongside

and the driver shoots...

numerous times
into the vehicle.

If what Theresa Swan
said is true,

then Suge Knight
got away with murder.

Greg Kading proved that LAPD

had nothing to do with
Biggie's murder,

so that's all the LAPD needed
to make this lawsuit go away

from Voletta Wallace
and her-- and Biggie's estate.

Once the lawsuit's retracted,

the LAPD loses its motivation
and its momentum.

They essentially
disband the task force.

The case gets shelved...

and that's where
we're at today.

Theresa Swan's statement alone

was not enough evidence for them
to prosecute Suge Knight.

I think Theresa Swan's
confession is credible,

but at the end of the day,
only she and Suge Knight

know the truth of
what really happened.

I had the opportunity to go
and meet with Voletta Wallace

at her home and explain to her
what we had discovered

during our investigation.

When I'm explaining that
we know what happened

but we can't prosecute it,

the both of us, you know,
ended up just in tears over it.

It was a very hard pill
for her to swallow.

It's highly unlikely that anyone
will ever be prosecuted

for either of these murders.

Too much time
has passed.

By now, too many
witnesses have died.

(Greg)
The two people
that are confessing

have immunity from their own
self-incriminating statements.

Almost all the other
co-conspirators that have been

implicated are dead.

The alleged triggerman
in Tupac's murder,

Orlando Anderson,

the alleged triggerman
in Biggie's murder,

... they're gone.

I'm very confident that
the murder of Biggie Smalls

was commissioned by Suge Knight.

He hired a gang member
to kill Biggie

in retaliation for
the shooting that had happened

in Las Vegas where Tupac was
shot and Suge was struck.

I hate that Miss Wallace
as well as Miss Shakur

never got
the justice for their sons,

not as Tupac
and Biggie,

but as two young men

who were trying to
pursue their dream

and who were cut down.

and criminal problems
began for Suge.

In 2008, Suge was
arrested on drug

and aggravated-assault charges

while leaving
a Las Vegas nightclub.

He's not gonna make
any comment at this time.

We're gonna argue this case
in the courtroom,

not out here.

In 2014, Suge
and comedian Katt Williams

were arrested for stealing
a photographer's camera.

You think it's fair they're
charging you with robbery?

Also in 2014, Suge was shot
six times

at a party in LA
hosted by Chris Brown.

It was a very public downfall.

Suge's downhill spiral
becomes an avalanche.

Finally, it was
murder was the case

all over again when, in 2015,

Suge is arrested for
a hit-and-run incident

that left one man dead

and another man
hospitalized.

Suge Knight was at odds,

call it a business dispute,

with some people
that were filming

the "Straight Outta Compton"
film down in Compton.

He heard that Dre
is gonna be there

and his view is,
"Dre, you made all this money.

"You owe me.

You oughta pay me."

Suge had been in communications
with Terry Carter.

They were friends.

And Terry Carter was
working out some type of truce

between Dr. Dre and Suge.

Terry Carter was recognized
from the streets

as being a peacemaker,
problem solver.

Suge went to Tam's Burger
at the request of Terry Carter

because he was
under the impression

that they were gonna finally
resolve these issues.

All of a sudden, he feels like
he's in the middle of an ambush.

He throws his car
into reverse

and just backs out in a hurry

and happens to hit
the guy that's behind him.

I get a phone call, like, within
five minutes of this happening

and they're like, "Hey,
Suge just ran over someone.

I call Suge and he doesn't even
realize he's ran over Terry,

one of his friends.

Uh, the car ran over two guys.

They were fighting and then,
um, he just pulled back

and pulled forward
and run them over.

The new attorney for Suge Knight
says that this video shows

that Suge Knight was ambushed.

Knight says he thought
he was being ambushed.

Knight's truck apparently
runs over two men.

The truck
backs up, hits one man.

Seconds later, the truck
comes back

and runs over another.

The video clearly shows
that Suge pulled up,

was ambushed
by multiple men,

and Cle "Bone" Sloan

was punching into the window
at Suge.

"Bone" is actually
hired as security detail

for Dr. Dre, specifically to
take care of Suge.

The video shows that
there appears to be a gun

that popped off of "Bone"
when he hit the ground,

and one of the witnesses

or whoever was there put it
in their pocket.

Were you in fear of your life?

How did you feel when you
found out that Terry had died?

So you didn't intend
to kill him?

It was self-defense
and it was an accident.

Suge thought that those men
were there to kill him.

Suge has a legitimate claim

insofar as what we can see
on the video camera.

His claim is that he
suffers from partial blindness

due to diabetes.

The district attorney's office,

they're portraying him as
a monster in the media.

They need to
create an image

and a storyline for them
to rebut anything

that the defense
would bring up.

Prosecutors on Friday
requesting Knight's bail

be set at $25 million.

The defendant has a great
potential to flee.

In this court's opinion,
$25 million is reasonable

and it is so set.

fighting this case.

He's fighting 30 years
of his public reputation.

If it were narrowed down just
to that particular incident,

just what took place
there at the Tam's Burger,

Suge would have a pretty
decent self-defense case.

But all of the crimes

is just gonna stack up.

Somehow, someway,
Suge became this person,

this person that doesn't
make himself

be accountable
for what he'd done.

and storytellers ever,

the most iconic
hip-hop artist ever, Tupac,

and arguably one of the smartest
businessmen ever,

Suge Knight,
all in the same space.

So... what happened?

So what can we take away
from this Death Row story?

that didn't have a lot of
room for someone like him.

But it was also fun and sexy
for the white kids

to listen to this

Gangster rap was pop music.

Everybody found their
inner gangster.

Those albums went platinum.

Suge made me miserable,

give him credit.

The influence
that Death Row had over people,

it was amazing to see it
from the inside.

When I look back at that time,

I see a young man who got
the opportunity

to live his dream
and be successful.

A lot of people have a lot of
bad things to say about Suge,

but without Suge,
there'd be no Kurupt.

Suge made hundreds of
millions of dollars.

But, you know,
look what happened.
