Do you think that we are in something of a Verstappen era?

I would put Max now on the verge of breaking into that top tier.

I don't think he's even at his peak powers yet.

I still think there's more to come from Max.

Is he now in that bracket of all time greats,

although he's still relatively young?

If you want to be as good as Max Verstappen,

you have to be racing cars at 3, 4, 5 years old.

You have to be living, breathing the sport

every day of your life through your childhood

I know it's very controversial the way Jos moulded Max.

Max, you could argue, is the first ever really purpose built F1 driver.

Bred to be an F1 driver.

There was a mission on the table, and it was

bringing Max in the best preparation to enter in motorsport.

And I think Jos was in his time

one of the top five, six quickest drivers in the world.

And I think the schooling Max had with Jos

is the basis of everything.

The 21-year-old Dutchman

is sensationally quick in a Formula One car,

or in any car, actually.

This is where Grand Prix 1994 is go!

My dad's design was something which was very important to me.

First of all, because that is how I remembered when I started racing,

may be a surprise signing for the Benetton Team.

Only two years between Formula Three and now Formula One.

So, we made a decision to go with Benetton...

and they put me in the car for the season.

These two drivers could well be on the grid for Benetton in Brazil.

That was not the easiest time to do it next to Michael

It's always difficult to apportion blame,

but it may well have been a car problem.

What a great shame, this season

really is not going the right way at all for him.

So, I stopped in 2003.

I could have done another year but I said, "I can't do it anymore."

I had a good time.

But knowing if you go to the race,

you finish somewhere between 10 and 20.

That was not good enough for me, so I decided that was it.

My dad had been on the podium, so, yeah, he had special moments.

But now he doesn't really care about what went wrong in his career.

I think he just said to himself, learn from it and just move on.

For me, I just saw him as my dad who was doing what I wanted to do.

That kart goes about 110 kilometres an hour.

And isn't it quite a dangerous sport at that kind of speed?

Who is your mechanic?

I was a mechanic, I was doing the engines...

I was driving the van.

And every weekend we were driving to Italy to go testing.

It was around 1200 kilometres one way.

Max was sleeping in a van, he had his bed behind the seats.

And then on Saturday morning, 8 o'clock,

went to the circuit, testing the whole day.

And Sunday the same,

and then around 4 o'clock I was driving back.

And then I dropped him off school on Monday morning.

I always kept it fun, or maybe he will stop with it or whatever.

So, he really enjoyed that time.

As a father, he was driving, he was financing, he was mentoring,

he was everything to make it happen.

Max Verstappen has made his way back to the front!

I was very proud of him.

It was fun. It was professional.

And we were doing it for a reason.

You were always in front, always first.

Can you explain us how can you do this?

Actually, you cannot explain it,

because every start is different.

I think at the time I was too young to fully understand everything.

It was just fun, you know.

I didn't realise that there would be tougher situations coming.

I went to like a psychology trainer, to talk with him.

and when we were driving to all the go kart races,

he didn't probably enjoy as much travelling in a van all the time,

the hours, the months.

All that work in the previous years, pushing myself to the limit.

And the travelling, going all over the place.

It was just so intense.

I was a bit like, "Why does it need to be like this?"

I know, some, like my dad,

it didn't matter if it was warm, cold, dry, wet,

he was out there like, "Every lap you make a mistake in that corner.

You're doing it wrong!" These kind of things.

Always constantly trying to improve me, you know?

Sometimes you take it a bit easier than others.

You have to keep in mind how straining it is.

But physically they have to be able to manage.

And sometimes it got a bit heated.

One time, my dad was very upset.

It was a World Championship.

That was the first opportunity for me to win

the World Championship.

In the years before, he was preparing everything for me,

testing the engines, everything was really set up well.

What a mistake by Max Verstappen!

My dad was just so upset with me doing that stupid move.

I basically threw everything away.

Of course, I was very sad and upset with myself,

you know, making that mistake.

I then start tried to talk to him afterwards in the van,

trying to travel home for 17 hours.

He didn't want to talk to me.

He was just so fed up with it.

He's like "Get out!"

He stopped at the fuel station and he's like " You get out."

And then he drove off.

People say how a bad father I was to him,

to abuse your child.

I never abused him. I was teaching him.

I was hard on him,

and that was also my plan on that, to learn,

to think.

A lot of people have no idea what you have to do to arrive

to the top of a sport.

And sometimes I said, "Jos, you're from a different planet."

He said, "I know,

but, we have to do it like this to be successful.

End of story."

I think Jos did everything with the right intention

because he knew that Max was very gifted.

the best period in my life.

There was so many family matters over the years.

With Jos especially there was some very bad times in his life.

I went to prison.

I stayed three nights in the police cell.

They decided I have to stay longer because they want to investigate.

It came to nothing but still, I'm not proud of it.

That was hard. The noise of the door shut and click, click, click.

And I had time to think and to reflect.

Visiting him was weird, of course, to see your dad like that.

It's definitely one of the hardest times in my life.

Sitting there on the other side of the glass is your father.

That quite hard, especially for Max.

I can remember he had a go kart race in Italy

and Jos was not present.

Without my dad, it was very weird because he was always there.

You could sit and cry,

but I mean it won't solve anything or bring you anywhere.

But you have to just move on.

- I think they're arriving. - Yes.

We are more like, we don't want to talk

about the bad things and more about the positive things,

and what we have now.

I think that's more important for us than back in the day.

Prison was a tough time.

It changed me.

It really put me in front of the mirror

and it opened my eyes.

I needed that, to put the focus on the things, what's important.

For sure it was hard for him.

But then, I think also in a way that motivated him a little bit

to show that he also could do it without me.

It is so new to me, so different, my dad not being around.

It was definitely hard,

but all of that I think at the end of the day,

makes you a stronger person, for sure.

He always talks in "we."

He just seems so calm behind the wheel now.

Nobody has been on the same plane as Max Verstappen.

Like we have never had any sort of argument in our friendship.

This could be the first time we had an argument

- if our children raced each other! - Because we are a very similar age,

so, for sure they will compete with each other

if they grow up and decide to go into go karting.

But I think horse riding or golf is a much better sport for our kids.
