In 2014,

I walked the Nile

from its source to the sea.

Yeah!

Now, I'm taking on an
even tougher journey.

This is hardcore.

Whoa! Whoa! Whoa!

I'm walking the length...

of the Himalayas.

It's absolutely phenomenal!

My route traces the
backbone of a continent.

I'm trekking 1,700 miles,

from Afghanistan in the west,

across soaring passes,

down into lush, tropical foothills.

Past Mount Everest

to end in the mystical
kingdom of Bhutan,

where the Himalayas drop
into the Tibetan Plateau.

It's like a party!

It will take me four million
steps to reach my goal.

Which nutcase came
up with this idea?

So far, I've walked
through five countries...

..and survived a terrifying car crash

to make it to the final
leg of my journey.

This is it, the final push.

Now, I'm heading
deeper into the wild.

I think this is generally
the right direction.

Through lands of mythical beliefs...

Absolutely unreal.

..and untouched peaks...

..where we seek...

That doesn't bode well, does it?

..the blessing of the gods

to reach our journey's end.

I need him more than ever.

He's not in a good way.

I think we should climb up here.

I'm on the final leg
to walk the Himalayas

with my Nepalese friend
and guide, Binod.

Woo!

14 years ago, we vowed to
walk these mountains together.

We've covered 800 miles

and are now entering one of
Nepal's most isolated regions.

This is pretty much the
end of the tourist trail.

This is about as far east
as most tourists get to.

Down there,

that's pretty much into the unknown.

Eastern Nepal is a place
that hardly anyone goes to

and the route that we're taking

is straight through the wilderness.

From Eastern Nepal,

we have 450 miles to
reach our journey's end.

We must first trek
through untamed wilderness

to reach a narrow stretch
of India, called West Bengal,

and our gateway to the
final country, Bhutan.

We will pass through
the capital, Thimphu,

step into a land of myth and legend

and onto the end of our route -

the world's highest unclimbed peak,

Gangkhar Puensum,

from where the Himalayas
drop into the Tibetan Plateau.

Binod reckons we're probably
the first foreigners

to come down this way

and, certainly,

by the looks that we get
from some of the locals...

For the next 50 miles,

we have porters with us.

To help lighten the load,

we're carrying minimum supplies.

Nepal's fuel crisis has left this
region even more isolated than usual,

but what we didn't realise

is that a lack of rain
has reduced this year's harvest.

The biggest problem
we've got at the moment

is just trying to find food,

so we're just trying
to find a little shop

or a little tea house
to get some food

but it is remarkable, like,
some of the places you find.

I mean, that's the village shop
there, just perched under the tree.

Can we buy some bread? Sorry?

Can we buy some bread from you?

Bread.

Bloody starving.

The drought has left
Ama's shop all but empty...

Thank you very much.

Dhanyabad. Dhanyabad.

She speaks very good English.

Yes. "Yes," see?

..but what little she does have,

she's willing to offer strangers.

It sounds like the
nearest guaranteed meal

will be at the next guesthouse,

15 miles away.

If we can track
the River Koshi,

we should get there before sunset,

but we're struggling
to find the right path.

Maybe it's just away from here.

Although, this side,

the side we're on now is
more steep than this side.

We are going down.

Yeah, well...

There's no path along the river?

No. What about on this side?

Nothing?

The old lady said there's no
path because it's too steep,

so we're going to have to climb all
the way to the top of that hill

and back round the other side.

Going over the hills was
not what we planned for

and the temperature has
hit 30 degrees Celsius

Which way do you think, Binod?

This side. Huh? I think this side.

We need to get straight up.

We've made it to the top,

and now all the way back down again.

Sweating my...

Yeah.

In three hours,
we cover just five miles...

..and our route is still not clear.

Which way?

It's so easy to get lost in
amongst everyone's fields.

You don't know what's a path
and what's just an irrigation ditch

and the last thing
you want to be doing

is treading on somebody's cabbages.

It's incredible how people
manage to thrive up here.

Most villages have no electricity...

..but those that do
sure make the most to it.

POP MUSIC FROM DISTANCE
Where's that music coming from?

Walking through the jungle

and you suddenly hear
this blaring music.

This is not what I
was expecting for lunch.

MUSIC BLARES

Hey.

People are dancing.

You come across some
weird stuff in the jungle.

I would have loved to have stayed

but we've not eaten anything
today, since breakfast,

so we've got to get to the next
village and try and find some food.

It's five o'clock,

we've got about an
hour left of light...

..and we need to
find somewhere to stay.

One false move,

you'd slip down this
and fall into that river.

Villages up here can be hours apart

and we only have 20
minutes till sunset...

I'm running low on water.

..but someone, somewhere,

is smiling down on us...

..as we stumble into
the village of Shale...

Woo! We made it.

Can we camp?

Yeah, somewhere. There is a field.

Dhanyabad.

Shall we get the tents
up before it's dark?

Literally, six o'clock comes
and it goes pitch-black,

you can't see a thing, so we were
lucky we managed to get our tents up

just in time.

And even though they
hardly have anything,

the village elder
provides us with a meal.

Right, let's go.

From Shale, we enjoy some of the
most untamed terrain of our journey.

It's bloody freezing.

Over the next five days,

we pass the elusive Dharapani

and push 100 miles east,

leaving Nepal to reach a slice
of India called West Bengal.

We're stepping away
from the rural wilderness,

and walk 100 miles,

past tea plantations and villages,

to the town of Jaigaon.

This is the last port of call

before we enter our final country.

It's a bit of a culture
shock to be back in India.

Binod's found a new friend.

This is low land and...

..it's a bigger part,

and it's not really
like the mountains,

but I think we will go up in
mountains and it will be so nice.

But before I climb
the property ladder,

Binod and I have other
business to deal with.

All this area is known
as the "Dooars" region

and it literally means "doors"

and this is the gateway to Bhutan.

That's the gate

and beyond it is
the Dragon Kingdom...

..and the place we'll
reach our journey's end.

'We're near the end of our journey
to walk the Himalayas.'

Well, this is it,

we're finally at the border
with Bhutan

and this is the final
country on the journey.

'It's home to the holy Mountain
of Gangkhar Puensum, where we plan

'to finish our trek.

'Neither Binod nor I
have ever been there.'

Are you excited to be entering
Bhutan, Binod?

Yeah, it will be nice to get in
there and see different things,

different worlds, yeah.

So here we go into Bhutan.

'Bhutan only opened its borders to
foreigners in 1974.

'So few people come here, it remains
largely untouched

'by outside influence.'

It's like entering another world.

You can hear all the car horns,
noise, shouting on the Indian side,

all the chaos that you'd expect.

Whereas this side,

it's very calm and peaceful
and quiet.

Just a very different atmosphere.

'Bhutan's government only
allowed TV here in 1999.'

Massive prayer wheels, aren't they?

I've never seen one that big,
have you?

'And the internet was
a millennium gift

'from the former king, Jigme Singye.'

'It's his birthday
in four days' time,

'and we want to be
in the capital for the party.'

I think Thimphu is going by
this way.

Maybe we should try by this side.

Hell of a walk.

'Just 750,000 people

'live in a country
the size of Switzerland.

'Like so many of the last thousand
miles, it's just me and Binod.

'Although today, he's not so good.'

I think Binod's struggling a bit.

He's lagging behind quite a way.

He's brilliant off-road -
whenever there's steep uphills,

he always plods on way ahead of me,

but when it comes to these
flat roads...

he hates it.

Binod's been struggling over
the past few days,

and I wonder if he's actually
recovered from the crash.

We've gone through a lot together.

You know, walking with somebody

for such a long, long time,

you know, you form
this incredible bond.

The journey isn't over yet,

and I need him more than ever.

of pounding the tarmac

'to arrive on the outskirts

Well, this is it. We've finally
made it 100 miles from the border,

and here we are at the gateway
to Thimphu.

'Arriving here is like stepping
into a completely different Bhutan.'

There's a real festival atmosphere
everywhere you look in this town...

and this is
the night before the big day,

tomorrow is the previous king's
60th birthday.

'The royal family took power here
in 1907.

'The much loved Fourth King

'passed the throne to his son
eight years ago.

'To help with our
Bhutanese knowledge,

'we've asked a smartly dressed
local guide - Jamyang Dorji -

'to join us.'

So this is the national dress?

Tomorrow, will more people

Oh, yeah, sure, because it's the
birthday of the Fourth King and so

everybody has to wear it.

Easy to be a policeman in
this country.

'I can see why crime is so low here.

'There are cops everywhere.

'I'm starting to see
another side to Thimphu.'

The thing that's noticeable

is just how strict
and controlling this country is.

Everywhere you go

there's rules, regulations.

A lot more than anywhere else
I've seen on this journey.

There's quite a controlling vibe
that sort of overrules everything.

I think it was the first
country in the world to ban smoking.

All the pubs are closed, all the bars
are closed for the king's birthday.

There's signs everywhere telling you
what you can and can't do.

There's definitely this feeling
that...

you know, people do as they're told.

'Despite Bhutan's picture postcard
image, I'm told that 25 years ago

'the state expelled
over 100,000 non-ethnic Bhutanese

'for not adhering to national values,

'including wearing the gho.

'Maybe citizens here have little
choice but to love their rulers.'

This is the queue for people wanting
to go into the national stadium.

The king's inside, and his wife.

Can we go inside?
I've got new shoes and everything!

'Some people have been waiting here
for eight hours.'

We're in the stadium.

About 30,000 people, and so literally

half the population
of Thimphu is here.

'A strong cultural identity
is key to GNH.

'For locals, it's events like this
that bind them together.'

So this pass represents
leaving behind Western Bhutan

and entering
the wilderness of the East.

And this is one of the most remote
and inaccessible places

In the entire Himalayas.

My friend Binod and I
are on the final leg

to walk the Himalayas.

Today, we're stepping into
one of the most curious regions

of the entire journey.

'Our Bhutanese guide, Jamyang Dorji,
has joined us...

'..in possibly the most striking
art gallery I've ever come across.'

Oh, yeah! There is one. A big one.

'Jamyang tells us
that a hard-drinking,

'womanising Buddhist monk lived here
who was famed for his...

'thunderbolt of wisdom.'

'He claimed it drove away
bad spirits.'

That's why you put a phallus
in front of the door... Yeah.

..and in the four corners of
the house.

That's the protection from the evil,
actually. Right.

I see. And how many people do this?

Well, everybody, they do. If there's
a newborn baby, they put out

wooden phallus on their necks
to protect from evil spirits,

and when people buy a new car,
they have to put a phallus.

For the next 100 miles,
we will walk ever deeper

into the country's mystical regions.

We're aiming for Chamkar -

the final town on our route and one
of the holiest places in Bhutan.

So, the landscape
has changed quite a lot.

We're now in this pine clad valley.
It's absolutely spectacular.

It's like small heaven.

Like paradise, isn't it?
Like a paradise, yeah.

'Prayer flags commemorate the dead.

'It's said every flutter
sends a prayer heavenward.'

Most of Bhutan is virtually
unspoiled and untouched,

and it's easy to see why myths
and legends are so popular here.

Everyone's very superstitious...

and the one thing that a lot of
people actually genuinely believe in

is yetis...

because this is
the land of the yeti.

We're setting out on one
of our toughest missions yet,

into a mysterious region of Bhutan
where few people venture.

When we are up in mountains
we must pray.

We must pray for the God
who lives up in mountains.

We have to say then we are in
your place, so please protect us.

Locals believe climbing these peaks
can upset the mountain gods.

But our guide Jamyang has found
a crew willing to take us there.

we must trek 50 miles

and scale 3,000 metres

to reach the base
of Gangkhar Puensum,

the tallest unconquered
peak in the world.

It's forbidden to climb it,

but we can climb a nearby peak
to reach our final destination

and the point where the Himalayas
drop into the Tibetan Plateau.

Winter's driving people
down from the mountains.

But we have to head up...

and Tenzing's not hanging around.

He says he wants to go fast
because the yaks are coming down.

Why, is that a problem
for the horses?

'And we continue past
the final few yak-herders.'

Now it's us and the woods. Yeah.

So we're the last ones
up to the mountain. Yeah.

'But not everyone's
heading downhill.'

We've got a new addition to the team.

This black dog has been following us
for the past ten miles.

But I don't know how far this dog
thinks he's going to come,

because we're going up
pretty high soon.

'He's certainly determined
to join us, I'll give him that.'

After 20 miles
we're at 3,500 metres

and Binod's starting to suffer.

He's lagging behind today.

I thought he was going to be OK
back in the mountains,

but I think he might
be struggling a bit.

Binod's feet are swelling up.

The best remedy I know
is glacial water.

25 miles from Gangkhar Puensum

and the end of our journey,

Binod's feet are getting worse.

He's limping now,
he's really struggling.

He's not in a good shape.

We slow down to walk together,

with the Holy mountain,
Gangkhar Puensum, in our sights.

We're in a very sacred
place, aren't we?

This is the end of the Himalayas.

Beyond that is the Tibetan Plateau.

This is it, you can see it...

in the form of a big, white wall
of snow and rock.

HE BREATHES HEAVILY

Getting to Gangkhar Puensum
is only half the job.

The real mission tomorrow will be
to climb above 5,000 metres

to view the edge of the Himalayas.

But after five months,
trekking 1,700 miles,

we stop to stand in awe of
one of the world's finest views.

So this is it.

We're going to pick
one of these mountains

and get to the top of it...

tomorrow morning.

And from where I'm standing now,

that one there

looks like the best bet.

A hell of a climb.

I only hope that Binod
can make it with me.

It would be nice
to get up in there.

But let's see...

until tomorrow morning,
how my feet will be.

The Lama warned us of problems,

but I'd hate to think that
after all we've been through

it means Binod and I
won't finish together.

It is absolutely freezing out there.

Strange to think
this is the final night...

..before the summit.

could hardly have been more wrong.

This is it, the final push

to the summit.

1,000 metres of almost
vertical climbing.

It's going to be hell.

Yes.

That way.

We're on 30-degree incline,

but this is the easy part.

What concerns me is the boulder field
500 metres above us.

The higher we get,
the thinner the air gets.

I reckon we're at about...

HE CATCHES HIS BREATH

..4,700 here.

We'll get up to 5,000
and have a little rest,

then push for the summit.

It takes two hours
to reach 5,000 metres

and the foot of the boulder field.

This is where it gets dangerous,
because a lot of these

rocks are quite loose.

So we have to be really careful.

It's like this all the way
to the top, by the looks of things.

This is an absolute BLEEP.

'This is seriously tricky terrain.'

It feels surreal to be here
on my own.

You know, I've met some
incredible people along the way

and had the most amazing guides.

I've seen everything
the Himalayas has to offer.

It's been magnificent

It's taken me five months...

..and four million steps

to walk 1,700 miles.

I've experienced five
incredible countries...

..all belonging to the mightiest
mountain range on earth.
