THE PROMISE
In August 1961 the world was already divided.
But no one ever dreamt of this long border
reaching its full height.
Moscow had the copyright for the concept and execution,
West German firms delivered the barbed wire.
An unjust regime has committed a new injustice...
The West protested, threatened, lamented...
the wall grew.
All arteries between the two halves of Berlin were severed,
and to the people on both sides, the few hundred meters between
East and West became the longest strip of land in the world.
So began one of the strangest experiments in history.
A people, once mad enough to want to rule the world,
slowly became two peoples.
And soon only the wall kept up the illusion,
that all that divided the German people was a wall.
EAST BERLIN FALL 1961
It's time.
- Fast! - You first! - Hurry!
Konrad! What is it? Come on!
Come on!
Hurry!
Go! I'll come later.
- I'm going back. - Do you want to get us all caught?
- Not without Konrad! - He'll come later!
- Careful! Shit! - what did you expect?
There are a million asses up above us.
At least they can't divide the shit.
Hey! You'll make us puke too.
- Are you sure that it's here? - I'm sure. It must be here.
He described it to me.
Then they're gone. It's all over.
He's ruined us all. We're too late.
I can't believe it! It's all over!
I knew you wouldn't do it to us.
Have you all lost your minds?
Didn't you think of your parents? Of the consequences?
Where are the others, down there?
You can't keep it from me!
Come on.
Shit.
And now?
So...
That way.
- Is it true that your aunt lives in a villa? - With 4 bathrooms?
No, just two.
How about an uncle who lives in Charlottenburg Palace?
- You want to report him? - Don't you get it? They'll know anyway.
We have to go to them before they come to us.
- You're worse than he is. - He made me tell him.
And you know I can't lie.
- Oh no... - What is it?
- We're still in the East. - That can't be!
- I swear. It looks exactly the same. - Take a closer look!
But be careful!
I...
I love Fords!
Hey. Hey! Sophie!
- Oh my god, you scared me. - How did you get here?
Look at yourself! What is this?
- How did you get here? - Worth celebrating, no?
I'm the only one with an aunt in the West.
This is a full-scale invasion...
- Did you bring your entire class? - Only the best.
What a stench!
We came through the sewer, like rats.
- Nothing can go wrong now. - But they're only children!
- What am I going to do with them? - Don't be mad.
I told them, there's nothing you can't handle,
You'll take care of all of us.
Me for all of you?
Konrad?
That's Max.
Wolfgang. Monika.
- Where's Konrad? - He's coming later.
Unlawful emigration, illegal border crossing...
That adds up to five years.
Whose bright idea was it?
You're a mess. Tie your shoelaces!
I know what's going through your mind:
Border posts, barbed wire, the feeling you're locked in.
It makes you want "out" doesn't it?
Maybe you're just not well-informed?
Did you know the West was planning a war against us? An attack.
Your father told us you tried to stop your friends.
You made the right decision.
A secure border keeps Germans from shooting Germans.
It's a shame you couldn't convince your girlfriend.
You'd help her and your father by telling the truth.
Out with it!
Who had the map of the sewer system?
Of course we caught all of them. Did you think we wouldn't?
So you want to say it was just a kind of game?
A test of courage, a silly little prank? And who found the way to the West?
You simply counted the manhole covers, right?
How many are there to the West?
Ask Sophie's mother.
Right away.
- You owe it to me. - If they'd been caught,
we would know by now.
- You mean, they all made it? - Of course.
You'll see, the dust has settled.
- What if I never see Sophie again? - The wall won't last long.
...a striking, loosely cut overcoat with side slit pockets,
and wide sleeves.
On the dress,
please note the eye-catching suede bow.
Yes, very good.
You're doing fine.
The "Viktoria".
It owes it's feminine elegance partly to the new collar design.
The jacket accentuates a high waistline,
which, as you can see, tapers out gracefully in the back.
And now our "Piccadilly" model.
A suit, featuring high pockets which underscore
the lines of the hips...
Excuse me a moment.
Keep out of this, I'm here to take Sophie home.
- She has a say too. - No she doesn't. She's a minor.
That attitude drove her here.
Nonsense. Your fashion glitz enticed her.
You underestimate her. Wait here.
You see the collar...
You wall in a whole country then pop over here for a coffee.
This is no time for your impudence.
Your mother wants you to come back to us.
Me or you. She chose you from the start.
I didn't take your father from you.
- You only killed him. - Who put that nonsense in your head?
Your father committed suicide in prison and you know it.
It's not nonsense, it's the truth.
And he wasn't the only one.
This sick lack of trust! You kids are paranoid.
What do you know? Think it's resistance?
I can take you back in a police car.
You're still a minor. They have laws here too.
All of a sudden? You used to call it the Wild West.
Frau Radke!
Please come with me.
Incomprehensible! A fabulous teacher and now this.
Still no news from your daughter?
You know that.
We must ask you to sever all contact.
I can't do that.
You can't ask that of me.
What do you expect?
It's very simple. Don't write any letters, don't answer any letters.
You daughter has joined the class enemy.
She went to her Aunt. She's just a child...
Talk it over with your husband.
I'm always holding your hand.
That's right.
You were always my little girl.
Please, write to her. Tell her I still love her...
- even though I left. - I'd like to.
But my letters don't get through now either.
You're not shooting at your brother when you stop a border violation!
How can he be your brother and betray our republic?
He is a criminal! Your weapons are protecting the most humane system,
that has ever existed in German history!
Stop! Don't move or I'll shoot!
Stop! Don't move or I'll shoot!
Stop! Don't move...
When you take so long he's already over the top!
The orders are to find, capture,
or destroy! Again!
Stop! Don't move...
You're against peace? Fall out!
- Carry on! - Stop! Don't move or I'll shoot!
Stop! Don't move or I'll shoot!
Stop! Don't move or I'll shoot!
- Stop! Don't move or I'll shoot! - Stop! Don't move or I'll shoot!
Willy Brandt want to take the following monstrous incident,
before the United Nations:
The Volkspolizei forced two bicyclists...
Attention! This is the Studio along the Wall!
To the border brigades:
No deserter will be sent back.
Stop your threats, Mr. Brandt!
Germans! Don't shoot Germans!
Free the citizens of West Berlin
from imperialistic warmongers, from revanchists...
Freedom is freedom to dissent!
Who can be proud of barbed wire?
Brandt and his cronies...
The Romans wore red in battle so their blood wouldn't show...
...and you're wearing brown pants!
Down with Brandt and the revanchists, victory to the Socialists!
Nobody has to be a border guard and shoot at people.
He should be glad they assigned him to the border.
- Don't take this probation lightly. - Probation?
You told me it was an honor, a sign of trust.
He has to do it, if he wants to go to college.
They wouldn't let him go in the West.
He knows that.
I told them I wasn't mature enough.
We'll see who's better off in five years.
- I'd leave if he treated me like that. - But you'd confess first.
- Every Sunday... - When else can they argue?
- Can't anyone here talk sense? - First, I have to be walled in here,
because I live in a better country, and then my own father turns me in,
- for wanting to escape. - I reported your friends, not you.
And now because my father turned me in,
I'm at the wall aiming at people who don't want to be walled in!
- It's not a wall. - No, it's a "peacekeeping measure."
- What is this all about anyway? - Your son!
He'll learn. Since the wall,
our cause has a chance.
Uwe.
Uwe!
- Stop! Don't move! - Stop! Don't move!
Are you crazy? Are we going to shoot each other?
Lower your rifle! What are you doing here?
I saw something move.
I didn't see anything here but you.
- I have to report this. - And you were sleeping on duty.
I almost thought you were trying to go over.
On the other side of the wall there will now be many sitting at their TV sets,
who have been thinking of fleeing for a year and a half. We must ask you,
not to let these recordings prompt you to do anything rash.
Don't think that it is easy or risk-free,
to build a tunnel like this.
Many of these escape attempts have failed.
Because of traitors, cave-ins,
and other disasters.
41 people gathered together,
to build this tunnel. 41 reliable people.
They dug in three 8 hour shifts, day and night...
Know any people who do that?
Are you crazy? Much too risky. I worry they'll catch Max.
- Max? He gets people out? - The Wall won't last long.
- The German People won't let it. - I wouldn't be so sure.
They've put up with worse.
You're not going to fall for that rabble-rouser.
He doesn't really care about those people.
And what do you really care about?
The time will come when there will be no wall.
- Max, is that you? - I'm blinded.
My camouflage duds.
Nice wheels, hey?
- I heard you miss someone. - Yes.
A technicality: How do you know Konrad wants out?
- I just know it. - To this day we don't know why
he closed the manhole cover. He could've come.
He was protecting us. The truck was coming.
Still, he always obeyed his daddy.
- You don't want him out. - How do you explain,
that he's become a border guard?
He wants to go over.
- Sure, like he stumbled... - Oh, stop it.
Love goes through concrete.
Do you have a picture of him?
- How much? - Women and children half price.
So long.
Thanks.
I'm an idiot. I waded through that sewer for you.
That doesn't make you an idiot.
Think it over. There's no turning back.
You can still say no. One rule:
No goodbyes, no sign - to anyone.
You'll find out the details one day before.
Let me go! You bastards!
Only the first 5 made it. The rest were caught.
- And Konrad? - Lucky.
He didn't show up.
It's not true.
It's not true! You didn't even tell him!
It's not true!
Where's the "Opera" model?
SUMMER 1968
ASTROPHYSICS INSTITUTE POTSDAM
Yes.
Go on, go on... Good, stop.
A little more. Good.
Yes.
My congratulations!
It's as elegant as it is simple.
Mr Richter's dynamo theory
has succeeded in explaining the periodicity of sun spots.
We ought to give him the chance
to present his theory at the IAU convention in Prague.
But Mr. Richter has no travel authorization.
Then arrange it. I'm not going without him.
Barbara!
Stage fright?
- It's my first sermon. - Stand up there.
Something's wrong.
Much too seductive.
I have to tell you the news.
It's official. I'm going to Prague.
Congratulations. And what was the price?
- Scientific brilliance, my dear. - Going to see Sophie?
If she gets this letter. The ways of the Lord are many.
Not with me, I have my price:
the latest flyers from Prague.
Excuse me. Is this the "Hradshin?"
"On the Hradshin at the Lantern with three women."
- Where is that? - I have no idea.
Three women out of iron?
- Iron, plaster, marble... - I know of two squares.
Here is the first one, and here is the second. But both have 4 women.
- There are two? - One on each square.
- Four women, not three. - Four. Right.
- Recognize me right away? - Immediately.
- Even that far away. - Anywhere.
If it weren't for me we'd have missed each other.
That's not true.
- It is. - I'd have gone to every hotel...
turned Prague upside down in order to find you.
Like you closed the manhole over me.
I fell, you saw me fall.
And when I organized your escape, you never even showed up.
Who told you that?
Wolfgang? And you believed him?
At least you finished your studies.
They need good people like me.
Something wrong with that?
There was just a small price to pay... Me.
Sophie!
You know that's not true. You could've come back,
when you saw my situation.
Come back? I thought we both wanted to leave.
Your life there was more important.
I left but I don't know if I really got anywhere.
I've always missed something. You, my mother...
Sophie.
This is the start of a new era.
Very nice examples of eruptive sun protuberances.
These pictures were taken with a Lyot filter in H-Alpha.
The movements of the gas masses show the structures
of the magnetic lines in the corona.
These pictures are of the sun's west side
on July 12th, 1967.
A few days earlier we measured the magnetic fields
in the photosphere,
and discovered that they had very complicated structures
with immense gradients.
Among them a spot with delta configurations,
which means several umbras
can be found in one penumbra. Structure like these
make strong eruptions on the sun very probable.
In the process, proton flares are also released.
My professor.
Let's say, his very worried friend.
- Ewald Lorenz. - Sophie Sellmann.
I've heard of you. Please.
Thank you.
Your friend is about to ruin his career.
I'm not the only one who's noticed his absences.
- You're not luring him away from us? - On the contrary.
I've decided to let Socialism keep him.
- I'm moving to Prague with him. - You want to live here in Prague?
How?
With your help. Why shouldn't a colleague
of the famous Lorenz write his doctoral thesis here?
Kepler wrote his "Astronomia Nova" here.
If you delegated me to...
And you would leave the West for him?
Does that surprise you?
Democracy and Socialism are the future.
Sounds like Rosa Luxemburg.
Tell me why.
Konrad told me that,
after the war you didn't go to the West,
despite the offers you had.
So you made a choice back then, too.
More against something than for something.
When I got back from the Soviet Union,
my former employers at Siemens invited me to Munich.
I knew most of them from the Nazi days.
Everything about them bothered me.
One old Nazi even said:
"Only a German can solve the riddle of hydrogen fusion."
They wanted to hear how much I had suffered
in the Soviet laboratories.
Their arrogant ignorance!
They wanted me as their trophy.
I didn't want to be one.
Still think your decision was right?
Here in Prague, this Spring, I've found hope again.
"I search for traces of your spirit in space,
in wonder of the magnificence of the heavens,
and note the orbits you have placed there.
And in the middle, to give life, the Sun."
The Institute's delighted with the idea.
If Lorenz lets you, no problem.
- We'd love it. - Thank you.
- And you're coming too? - That's right.
- It was Sophie's idea. - Do you have work?
- She's an interpreter. - Right now.
I can design clothes too.
I'll dress all of Prague!
Fantastic!
Thank you.
You're from the West, aren't you?
I've lived there.
Won't you miss some things here?
Over there I also missed something.
Now tell me: do you believe in Socialism with a human face?
- Don't you? - What a crazy world!
Know "Everywhere you are?"
Konrad. Konrad!
- Sophie! I looked for you everywhere. - I'm going outside. Are you coming?
Are you crazy?
Sophie, stop!
- Quit it, you idiot! - No one's allowed out! Wait here.
Quit it, you idiot! Are you all crazy?!
Come back! This is insane! Sophie!
Freedom! Freedom!
Sophie!
Sophie!
When the first shots fell,
it was reminiscent of 1953 and 1956,
of East Berlin and Hungary.
These scenes from Prague in 1968 are yet more evidence
that Soviet tolerance stops
where Soviet realpolitik begins.
- What are you doing? - Mourning.
Whom? Name! Address!
A great hope that was buried today.
Mr. Richter!
Especially in times like these, our Soviet friends
need our solidarity.
Incidentally, your friend and mentor, Professor Lorenz, signed it.
He must have good reasons.
I can't.
Yes, I know.
My signing was a mistake.
What happened in Prague is a crime.
But it's not just the tanks. It's because of people like you,
who keep quiet and sign, that the tanks can decide.
Outrage is quantitative. It gets used up.
It will happen to you too. I don't have the strength anymore.
I have talent and not much more time. I have to protect it.
Still, what you did was a crime.
I know but I'm part of this fucked-up country!
By the way... I'm proud of you.
- Your entrance card? - The trial is public.
- With an entrance card. - I'm a party member.
Sorry, comrade. Ask the judge.
Pardon me. I'm the father of the defendant. My name is Richter.
They won't let me in.
- That's my son. - If there's room, of course.
Thank you.
- You heard, we can go in. - If there's room. But it's full.
That bench there...
Reserved for a factory delegation.
Even in the Nazi days,
they let my parents into my trial!
Well we no longer live in the... did you say "Nazi days?"
Show me your ear.
- Go on through. - Thank you.
Your papers... Come with me.
Just a moment.
Go in there and wait.
You know very well that we can't grant you entry.
I keep trying.
Today's your lucky day. We're making an exception.
Who knows? Maybe you'll come back home.
Until midnight.
That's her.
And they just let you in?
Yes, all of a sudden.
Sophie, that can't be. What did you promise them?
I said that you and I had to come together sometime.
That I could imagine living here with you.
Now you say that? After what happened in Prague?
Something wonderful happened in Prague.
I'm...
I'm having your baby.
You'd come back here and apply for citizenship?
Yes.
What's with that?
- It's your imagination. - Look out the window.
Go on.
Do you really want your child to grow up with them?
Do you know what will happen if you come back here?
They'll interrogate you in a camp for weeks,
give you a background check.
I have nothing to hide.
Lorenz made me the main speaker at the IAU convention in Stockholm,
the keynote lecture.
It's already been approved, my name is printed, it's a sure thing.
So? Whose plan is better, yours or mine?
Let... let him go.
He wants to go to his child.
If you go now it'll kill him. They'll keep Barbara in jail.
She won't be able to say goodbye to him.
Follow your heart.
Take good care of your child.
Yes.
Excuse me.
Im very sorry.
Why must I always bring bad news?
- My father? - No.
The minister is worried on your account.
In Stockholm they've announced you're ill. The visa's been canceled.
Lorenz and I tried everything, believe me.
What on earth happened?
I'm to give your speech for you.
I'd be glad to do it.
I mean so that your study is presented.
But only with your permission, of course.
You know I'd do you justice.
It's the third time I've been turned back.
I can't wait anymore and I don't want to.
The baby feels my anxiety. With this endless uncertainty,
I can't give it the trust it needs.
Please don't write me anymore.
We each have to live our own lives.
12 YEARS LATER
"Woe to those who move down to Egypt for help
"and rely on horses, and hope for carts for they are many.
"and beasts to pull them.
"We still have mouths to speak, we still have air to breathe,
we still have bread to eat."
But by talking and pleading
we won't stop the missiles, on either side of the border.
Our peace movement needs acts that bear witness.
How are you going to defend freedom?
- With a hymn book? - By negotiating?
No, with friendly sermons.
Why do we even need a peace movement?
Our whole country is a peace movement. Cheers!
This is a church, not a bar. May I continue?
May I continue?
Boo! I also wanted to say...
Please let me finish.
Today we wanted to...
- I have a protest letter here... - Let me finish!
A protest letter we should vote on. For the Bonn government.
- I wrote it myself. - Please be patient.
I'm afraid you have a warped notion of democracy.
The majority wants to hear the letter.
Let's vote.
- You see, a majority. - This is my church.
No letter leaves here without my approval.
This is a dictatorship! Clerical fascism!
"Peaceniks brawling in church".
- Who grabbed my arm? - One of us.
I don't believe it. I almost hit someone.
I don't go anymore. I'd hit somebody too.
- How long has this been going on? - For months.
The worst thing is they're so punctual.
They get paid to go to church.
But I'll tell you one thing:
Someday I'll baptize one of them.
You and your protestant faith.
I wish some would rub off on Harald.
THE COUNTRY IS SILENT - But not for long!
Professor, you think in large time periods.
How long does a decline last?
I read history books and ask:
How long did the Roman Empire decline? The Ottoman Empire?
How long will our socialist paradise take till it falls?
What did you find out?
Too long for a lifetime.
It can't be! Konrad? Please come in.
You look just like I imagined you would.
Sophie bet me you wouldn't come.
I won. You're here. Gรฉrard Robleau. - Konrad Richter.
Have a seat. Would you like a drink? Whisky? Gin?
Scotch.
Your being here is a sensation.
I wrote about it in "Le Monde".
The first time a delegation from GDR to come to West Berlin,
for an IAU convention. Please sit down.
What do you think it means?
Will Germans work together to explore space?
- We're just doing basic research. - Everyone knows, without GDR experts,
Soviet rockets couldn't get off the ground.
We're either underestimated or overrated.
I don't want to embarrass you with my questions,
but Alexander will. He wants to know everything.
He asks me about black holes in the belly of the cosmos,
and I have no idea. I didn't shine in physics.
- Hello Alexander. - Hello.
Come on, Let's finish our game of chess.
- How long have you been here? - Since yesterday.
- How long are you staying? - Day after tomorrow.
How's your sister?
Fine.
Is she still with Harald?
- How are you? - Good.
Do you have children?
Nice.
I just wanted to ask you, Could I take Alexander...
...for a walk?
Yes, sure.
Want to look over?
I'll show you something.
- How does that work? - I don't know.
But it does. The ball comes back every time.
I envy Alexander.
I too have so many questions.
Perhaps next time.
- That could be a while. - Ten years?
Let's say tomorrow. At the convention.
Alright.
Gerard, come on.
Since the international boycott movement failed, the Olympic Games in Berlin
provided the Nazis with enormous prestige and glamour
as it was portrayed in Leni Riefenstahl's work.
Germany emerged victorious with...
Come here, please.
Germany emerged victorious with 33 gold medals and Adolf Hitler,
who actually hated sports, came forward as the winner.
One thing seems to be sure:
Without the many Germans cheering Adolf Hitler,
there would have been no Second World War,
no Soviet occupation in middle and eastern Europe and no...
and no Wall in Berlin. Just a moment please.
You're interested in history? How did you know I was here?
- From Alex. - Aha.
- I never heard you speak English. - When could you have?
- Sounds good. - A job.
- May I ask you for a photo with us? - Sure!
- Say... say "cheese"! - Cheese!
Can a woman love a man
she's only seen three times in 20 years?
Forever never meant waiting forever.
I had to accept you couldn't wait any longer.
You adjusted fast enough.
I couldn't get out, there was no way.
You knew when I was pregnant that you weren't coming.
- You've forgotten how it is there. - Don't be ridiculous.
You can't blame 20 lost years on shoelaces,
on the Wall, the Stasi, or whatever.
At some point you have to account for your life
even if it's only happening to you.
Wrong, just wrong, that's exactly what you can't do.
You've been doing it all along. You became Lorenz' successor.
You cross the checkpoint in a limo.
You did what you wanted to.
Everything else is an illusion.
Do you ever dream of me?
Yes.
But it aggravates me each time.
I had to learn to live with the options I had.
I live well, I'm successful,
my work satisfies me.
I have a position I deserve.
Our break-up didn't kill me.
But I never...
I've always loved you. You have to accept that it wasn't my fault.
It wasn't a weakness of mine that kept us apart.
Good morning.
You gave "Le Monde" an interview. Do you know the law on
"Conveying confidential information"?
I saw my son.
- You should have informed us before. - I wasn't sure he wanted to see me.
But now you want to see him again, don't you?
We value, we still value your work, Professor Richter,
and you can keep seeing your son. But here, with us.
An expression of our appreciation. If you'd just sign this?
It's your statement, that the so-called interview
was fabricated by the journalist.
By the way, he was very complimentary.
A signature for a son.
How can you do this sort of thing?
When I was as young as your Alexander,
I wanted to work for the Stasi.
A childhood dream.
Remember those old anti-Nazi films?
When I saw them, this hatred welled up in me.
I wanted to make sure it would never happen again.
With whatever lies it takes.
We, my dear Professor, decide what the truth is.
That thing's neat.
Really neat.
- Was it bad? - They didn't even frisk me.
- Hello. - Hello.
Nice to finally have you here.
This is Lena, your Sister. This is Alexander.
Hi. He's for you.
Thanks. Can you ride?
- Do magic tricks? - No.
- Can you fly? - No. What can you do?
I made "rouladen" for you. Do you like them?
What's your favorite dish? What does Sophie cook?
Gerard always cooks. His specialty is boeuf bourgignon.
Gerard is her husband?
No, he's her "amant".
I can tell jokes, want to hear one?
Two zeroes are in the desert and they see an eight.
- One Zero says to the other... - Wait, wait!
"Man, isn't she dumb, wearing a belt!"
"Man, isn't she dumb, wearing a belt in this heat!"
- I don't get it. - Man, are you dumb!
Careful, it's hot.
Know what they call pizza? "Krusta".
- We didn't have it back then. - Know what they call hamburgers?
- No. - "Grilletta".
Grilletta?
- How do you like your sister? - Okay...
And Elisabeth?
Is she pretty? How old is she?
Don't make me pry it out of you.
She looks kind of like you.
She can't be as pretty as your mother.
Konrad said, for him you're still the prettiest.
I don't want to start being glad the Wall's there.
- Lena drew panda bears today. - Nice.
Alexander promised to take her to the zoo next time.
How do you tell him he can't?
- They can go to the zoo here. - The Tierpark?
They don't have pandas here.
She can't tell a panda from a brown bear.
That's what you think. And he'll keep making promises to her
that we can't keep.
Then we'll just tell her.
How do you do that?
I think it would be better if you see Alexander alone next time.
But if you'd come with Mom before I was born,
- We would be together now. - That's true.
Why didn't you come?
You were scared, right?
Scared?
Did Sophie tell you that?
Staying here... that was daring,
an adventure.
We wanted to build something new.
- Yeah? What? - We called it Socialism.
- What's that? - I'll tell you later.
You know, there was a difference
Between your mother and me. I felt at home here.
What would've happened if you'd gone too?
My life would've been different.
Then maybe I wouldn't even have been born.
You would've argued, and I wouldn't be here.
Or you'd already be 16.
- What else did she say about me? - She said you were a genius.
- And you're a genius at chess. - Gerard's even better.
- You two get along well? - Yeah.
- Does Sophie? - You sure are nosy.
This the one?
Where were you?
How'd they do it?
- Give me your belt. - Come on, let's go.
We'll wait until dark.
I have an idea. Let's both go over tonight, together.
In the first column, units of the army,
the border brigades,
the "Feliks Dzierzynski" guard regiment, from the ministry of State Security,
as well as Volkspolizei units from the ministry of the interior.
They all attest to the partnership
between the working class
and the armed forces of our socialist state.
All led by the party of the working class,
in alliance with the Soviet Army, committed to the people of the GDR,
they safeguard our socialist achievements.
They guarantee the security of our borders and territory.
As they did on August 13th, 1961,
as they do today and always will.
East Berliners could watch from their rear windows today
as a car convoy formed this afternoon,
to demonstrate against the Berlin Wall,
initiated by the International Association for Human Rights.
They laid wreaths for the victims of the Wall
and held a moment of silence.
The crowd of demonstrators carried banners
and wooden crosses
as reminders of the 70 people
who died at the Wall since 1961.
The official activities in East Berlin were marred by a spectacular event.
An unidentified man in a building
facing the border had tied himself to a window frame,
with the number 20 painted on his chest.
He was later forcibly removed
by Stasi officials.
Stop the coughing!
We used to do things together.
Did it have to be the crucifixion?
Too much pathos, I admit.
I miss you. I never missed anyone so much.
I miss you too.
You're the sexiest pastor I know.
The bishop said we'll get you out on probation.
The bishop let's the Stasi fuck him. He's a pawn.
- You're unfair. - Just honest. No more lies.
I could be out tomorrow. But it's not up to me.
- Then who? - You.
They made me an offer
millions of people dream of:
Any time. Emigration to the West. If you come.
- You turned it down? - I'd never go without you.
They want us to give up.
Harald, you're not alone!
1000 people came to the rogation service for you.
- We have to make it here! - Don't forget,
I don't have your damn patience.
Well...
Professor?
Things working out with your son?
I'd say you owe me something in return.
Your brother-in-law's applied for an exit permit,
and we'll let him go - if your sister accompanies him.
You could be a big help.
- My sister has a mind of her own. - Well...
how is she going to cope,
if little Alexander can't visit his father?
Ever again.
How much shit can one person take?
I can't take it anymore. Neither can Harald.
After Prague Harald and I swore to stay here,
to change things.
We knew it was the hard way.
As if that makes it better.
I can't leave. It would be a betrayal.
Stop playing that damn organ!
All this praying and talk about peace. I can't stand it anymore!
When I look at this place... it's all got to go!
- Did you apply for an exit permit? - We're not talking about me.
- Oh, no? - ABout Harald and you.
He's burnt out. He has to get out of here. And he won't go without you.
Can you play with two hands?
No questions today?
What's an "exit permit" application?
It's a letter in which you ask the authorities
to let you leave the country.
Why do you ask?
Konrad wants to leave. I heard him say so.
I don't believe it. Did he really say that?
Yeah.
He could live with us.
Especially with Gerard in New York.
- Would you like that? - I would. What about you?
I don't know. We never lived together.
But you love each other.
He loves Lena and Elisabeth too.
Elisabeth want's a divorce.
Nonsense. You're making that up.
But what if it were true?
I think you and I do alright together.
You applied for an exit permit.
You know how that came about, the condition I was in.
The West can't be worse than a few years in prison here. Sign it.
Not without my wife.
You should've thought about that before.
I'm not going! I didn't sign it!
I'm not going! I'm not going!
I want to stay here! I don't want to go to the West!
Any spare change?
Fuck you and your "East" money!
Stop! Don't move!
Stop! Don't move!
"If I took the wings of dawn
"And flew to the farthest sea
"Your hand would still guide mine
"And be my strength
"If I said: darkness, cover me
"Wrapped in the blackest night
"It wouldn't be dark with You
"Night would shine like day
Darkness would be light."
- That's for your hypocrisy! - Have you gone crazy?
Why didn't you tell me you went to Barbara's meetings?
Why do I have to find out from Mรผller?
- I didn't want to worry you. - You wanted to exclude me!
The way you've always excluded me.
Whether it's Barbara of Sophie,
or Alexander or anything.
You didn't want Alexander to come here.
Because Lena and I mean nothing to you since he showed up.
I know what's going on in your head when you sit here
and fill up on vodka.
You're not even here. All you can think about,
is when and how you're going to see him.
Harald is dead. I can't go on as if nothing happened.
So you generously put us in danger too.
I knew you'd react like that.
You're wrong. I wouldn't be afraid.
If you really cared about us.
You don't live with me,
but with your ghosts.
My life is here with you.
And this here?
Your relic.
- Entry denied. - Why?
We aren't required to give reasons.
I don't get it.
- Let me see my son, Mรผller. - Ah, the Professor.
The West isn't for everyone. Harald, for example.
- Let me see my son. - We're disappointed.
You broke our agreement.
- Come here. - Let me see my son.
Here, give it a try.
Frees the mind.
Mama!
- You have to come with me. - I can't now, I have to work.
- You have to come. - What for?
You wouldn't believe me. Come on!
- What is it? - Come on, quick!
What's going on?
- The Wall's open! - What wall?
The wall was built on my 6th birthday and now it's falling,
- I'm just speechless. - How are you doing?
Christa! Bring me some more glasses! Cheers!
Here, have some! Bring some more! For the border guards!
We couldn't believe it. We had to see for ourselves.
- And here we are. - Even the border guards are friendly!
I never thought this day would come.
That it would be so easy.
Cheers pal! Cheers! Here, have a drink!
- Young lady, do you want to visit someone? - We just wanted to come see.
To really see it. Our daughter is home in bed.
Just once.
- And you're not cheering? - It's too late for me.
But you must be glad?
When the cage opens after 30 years, you can't fly anymore.
Come on, let's go over.
I can't. You go, I'll wait for you.
"Wait". You can scratch that word. Forever.
Go.
Champagne and tears are flowing here.
- You look like you're very happy. - And how! What a day!
We've been working towards this day for years.
Father!
Alex?
Isn't that Sophie?
Sophie!
