the transformation

of Noah's character,
like, that's why I'm fascinated

with Mekki today because
I was a hundred percent sure

he was one way, and now
he's the complete opposite, you know?

Jeannie trying to hide

how excited she is
that maybe she has a shot.

Well, it wasn't one, like,

behind me, there was a hidden door.

And the last episode,
Ronald, didn't he check it

to like, "What in the hell is this?"
Like, "Oh, shit, he's onto it."

Yes, yes.
The mirror was coming up

-a little bit.
- Yeah.

And then the next day,
it was repaired.

By the way, this is so great.
No one knew what the hell--

No one-- I didn't know
he was going to bring this in.

-Outstanding.
- And this was because

or did it happen to be at the hotel?

No, so because production
felt bad for us.

They said,
"Hey, we're gonna give you books,

DVDs, board games,
just make us a list,

we'll run it by the court
if they approve it.

We'll get it for you."
That was the first thing I requested.

That was literally number one.

- I will say, though, James,

I didn't know there were cameras
in here right now,

that's why I was having you sign it,
because Jordan, one of the producers,

was really pushing to get me
to have you sign the notebook

'cause it was a family friendly movie
in front of the camera.

There was a conversation that--

and you were such a fan of this show,

this movie, that as a gift back
after I embarrassed myself

in the next episode,
I think it's the next episode,

the birthday party,
as a sort of like an olive branch,

you know, just whatever-- To try
and get back in good graces with you,

we were gonna deliver you

this is another example

of Ronald getting that DVD

and requesting it, which we didn't know
he was gonna bring it in

and ask you to sign. Playing perfect--

As if it was scripted because,

James, your goal going in that morning
was find a natural time

to ask him to read lines with you,

-but try to make it not out of nowhere.
- Right.

And so then he asked you
to sign the DVD and just like

lob you that softball,

and you were like, "Boom. I'll do this
for you if you do something for me."

It's crazy the puzzle
that this is.

- But we did not plan that.
- Yeah.

- There's a luck component.
- Yeah, there is.

- We really stumbled across--
- And that was the other thing,

it's like, even when we as the actors

were, like, going-- were in it,
we sometimes forgot

where we were and it was almost like
you had the script of like,

this is what we're doing, like,
"Oh, yeah, that's right."

Yeah, I wonder-- It makes you
wonder like how much of this is like--

There is an energy out there
that somebody is just

-compelled to do something...
- Yeah.

...because there's an energy,
you know what I mean?

That was crazy.

You know what? That's funny.
Our DP, Chris Darnell,

-who's fantastic--
- Whoa, Darnell!

- Darnell, baby!
- Darnell! Darnell!

And he's done a lot of work
in this genre

and some hidden camera stuff,
and he worked on Borat,

and filmed that Giuliani scene,
but he was telling me,

he was like, "Wait till you see, man,
though. A couple days into this,

if it's going right
and all the actors are on the same page,

and if Ronald's in too,
there's this subconscious thing

that starts to happen and it is--
it's like an unspoken energy,

and all of a sudden, everyone's
just flowing in the same direction...

- Yes.
-...going where they're supposed to.

And he said it's a thing
that happens sometimes

on projects like these
where everyone kinda just lines up

without saying it.

- Absolutely.
- And we also had to have

a ginormous amount of trust...

- Yes!
-...just to like, be like, "Okay,

we're in this together," so...

Which kudos to, you know,
production team

and Jake, especially Nate and Jake and...

and Cody for making it,

and making it a community,
making it an environment

that we could all collaborate
and trust each other.

This just gets one of
the biggest laughs in the whole show.

I think this is Andrew Weinberg

adding one of the best jokes
of the entire show.

Which theater was it?

It was the-- at The Grove.

James was saying,
"Yeah, we've all been there."

- Yeah.

-Yeah, soft shoulders, soft shoulders.

'Cause there was like an hour
of this guy testifying

-really good stuff.

Really good stuff about
the defendant before she knocks him down.

And Evan is just
at a loss for words.

Ronald,

Yeah, I just-- Truthfully, I had
no idea where he was gonna go with this.

I was like, "You can't recover from that."

But I was also shocked 'cause I was like,

"You knew that he was coming up
on the stand."

I was like, "Why would you even
have him up here

knowing his past?"

I saw that on Video on Demand
and there was zero arousal for me.

That was a four-second clip
of Ron talking for twenty minutes.

To get two sentences out.

Yeah, it's not even
a sexy movie.

Dude, when you say,
"Come up from the crust of the Earth..."

...I'm like, it's unreal
how funny that is.

- Why is that funny?
- It's just so specific of you.

She found that emotion or whatever
and flowed into that,

and, like, that was not in the plan.

She knocked it
into the frickin' park.

- Unbelievable.

how, you know, the architecture,

the structure of this point
we're trying to--

and then they fall on their face.

Well, in our,
you know, master plan...

but also not say
he's maybe not a screw-up,

to be believable to Ronald as well

that some people would vote for Jacquees.

kind of a screw-up even though--

So, it was-- That was tricky too.

How do we humanize him and say,
"Hey, please don't screw this guy over,"

but also, it has to be believable
that some people would vote against him

-when we get to deliberations.
- Yeah.

You got to have something
to deliberate over.

- Yeah.
- Yeah.

- Oh, man! Oh, my God!

Mekki, when you called me over
here, man, I had no idea what to expect.

"Can you come over here?"

So that was-- Yeah, the way we
orchestrated that was that it, you know,

you were gonna have to do an interview
in the hallway,

and then my real-life girlfriend,
again, Dessie,

is in courtroom two,
in the control room,

waiting by a phone,
and I gotta wave Ronald over,

and then she breaks up with him,
or breaks up with me, to Ronald.

Look at the phone.
I'm just, "Wow."

Precariously almost falling off the wall
with that guy.

It's this fake phone that's...

And then the hidden camera...

He, uh, he was given
the wrong drinks on accident.

- Wow. Wow.
-She doesn't like that I drink.

Okay. Well...

- Oh, no.
- Yeah. So, I mean, this is--

Again, everybody takes a turn
where you're the one

who could mess everything up,
and Dessie is--

Dessie's an artist, she's not an actor.
You know, so it's like,

she was like, "I don't know.
I'll give this a try.

-Like, whatever."
- Oh, man, yeah.

- Really just nailed it.
- She did.

She had no experience
yelling at her boyfriend, I assume.

Definitely one
of the most awkward situations...

and you're like, "Ah, I don't know."

She just seemed mad.

I can understand why

people would think
that it was scripted because

how perfect is that
that I'm just walking away from him,

-he's like, "Right, Ronald?"
- You're so annoyed here.

You are so annoyed right here.

How did you handle that
knowing that she said,

"Tell him it's over."

I was not gonna break
the news to him.

The only thing in my mind was like,
"You need to call her later."

That was all I was gonna say.

- Yeah, that's what you said.
- That's all I was gonna say.

- "You handle that, bro."
- Yup.

Does she wanna get back together?
Is it-- is it...

- Oh, God.
-It didn't sound like it.

these people that had to do
something on the stand,

Whitney and Ben,

they had to like sit there
in this entire thing

-for, like, two and a half weeks.
- Yeah, that's right.

And then they had one
45 minute-period to, like, not mess up

-anything at all.
- Anything. Yeah.

That's like
a different type of pressure.

- Yeah.
- Really delivered.

to speak of,

whose own mom
has kind of called him a dirtbag...

When did you realize
what he was doing, Ronald?

during times of this,

but the way that you kept
linking everything back

to your personal life, I was like,
"All right, man,

you gotta just give this a break."

There was a point
where you were clearly like, "Okay, bro."

- Yeah, come on.
- 'Cause you're so annoyed.

Yeah, yeah.

You were pulling
typical James Marsden.

You're making everything
about yourself, man.

- What's wrong with that?

His counsel
will remain as co-counsel...

Ronald, did you ever feel like
the cameras were pointed at you too much?

Not too much.
Um, so Parker, I realized, was on me

every single day,
and that's why I knew his name,

'cause I talked to him every day.

But they did a great job, James,
of putting you right next to me.

So it's like, "Well, of course,
there's a camera on me.

-James is right here with me."
- Right!

Of course. Come on!
Of course, the camera's on the guy.

But we did have to, like,

make sure that the cameras
went away from him

and to film the other actors,
so it was balanced.

Well, then it was tough,
like we had visible cameras

in the courtroom
and the whole idea of being the judges

allowing the cameras,
and that was tough too,

'cause, like, there are only two
or three cameras in there

and it was like, "Yeah,
Ronald's gonna notice if one

-is only ever on him."
- Always pointed at him.

Actually, that brings up a good point.

Um, in the very beginning,
I think it was like

the first or second day,
you guys intentionally made

somebody on the camera crew
like drop something

or make a loud noise,
started interrupting,

and the judge acted mad.

He pulled everyone back,

he's like,
"Look, I'm doing you guys a favor

for allowing this,"
he's like, "Don't take advantage

-of my kindness."
- Yes, I remember.

He essentially was like,
"If you guys keep messing up,

I'm not gonna allow this anymore."

Yeah, he yelled at him
for having hats and shorts and stuff.

He's like, "Next time, come in..."
Yeah. Reality Bank.

That was one
of the big early plans.

-How do we make you buy this?
- Yup.

Speaking of cameras,
there were--

I had to be the cameraman in this scene

because there was a--
I had to set up the actual shots

for this whole thing.
There was one long lens

across the way, but that camera bag
sitting next to me

-had a hidden camera in the side pocket.
- Goddamn it!

- Wait, where is it?

You didn't even know that,
did you?

- No.
- Wait, where is it?

Where is it again?

- In the side pocket of the...
- That gray camera bag.

is I think that those button cameras
inside of this gray bag

were designed specifically for some
of the scenes they did in Borat 2.

You guys put me up against button cameras,
of course I didn't stand a chance.

two little cameras on tripods
around in here.

where I just did something stupid

And he goes, "Yeah, it wasn't your best."

Like, you wouldn't have said it
to me unless you were prompted.

- No, for sure, yeah.

whenever you walk in,
she's one of our writers,

and came up with everything
that would be said...

And also, I think you guys
were in there for about an hour

before Mekki came in.

So, really, we had to make sure
you did forget about it.

Oh, true, yeah.

The improv assist,
popping over my movements.

All right, so now he goes...

The door on the right, the prop guy's
waiting on the other side of that door

with a giant rubber turd.

- In Todd's room. Yes.

And as soon as he goes in,

they come into the room where I am.

I come out,
they put the turd in the toilet...

What did they put, like, chunky beef stew

-or something in there...
- Eww!

- And spray.
- Campbell's.

I have to say,
I think one of the biggest risks

of the whole thing was,

"Wait, we're gonna put fake poop in there,

but have him believe it's real poop?
That's hard to do."

Mekki, my God,
you sold this. Holy cow, man.

Like, I was like,
"Dude, this guy is so nervous right now."

I mean... And like, that's why
I stepped in front of here like this too,

'cause I was like, "I'm gonna give him
a minute to go collect himself."

I literally was like,

Uh, I'm bummed about this
'cause my body's blocking his entrance

his first reaction when he smells

the doo-doo in the air.

You know? And it was--
it smelled like livestock.

It wasn't like a normal crap.

It might've stirred it up.

And then the idea was
try to tell him you didn't do that.

- Ugh!

Yeah, and that's the thing too,
when you're like,

"Oh, there was already one in there."

I was like, "James, I think I would know
if I left something."

That was it. In the script,
it was like, I'm gonna like,

"Dude, come on now, that was not me.

- That was Ronald.
- It was you.

And then the plumber's on the way
and you gotta cop to.

That was definitely not mine."

James, was it-- This was
the one thing I watched and I'm like,

"I don't know if I could've done that."

Like, was it hard to pretend that you just
dropped that big-ass deuce over there?

- No. No.

No? Felt nice and easy?

But I just was worried
that he wasn't gonna smell it.

So I ended up spraying it
outside of the door sill.

- Oh, no!
- Eww!

And it didn't occur to me
till later that night,

he went back to his own room
and had to sleep in it.

The room just still smelled like--
Yeah, we sent a cleaning crew in

-while he was still at court.
- Aww!

And by the way, kudos
to Cody Heller, who I remember,

'cause we were all nervous about that bit.
Again, getting you to actually--

It'd be a lot weirder
if you showed up and--

"There's a fake piece of clay
in my toilet"?

- Right. Right.

Cody, man, she was trying the poop spray,

she was-- she was making sure
we had the spray--

to actually provide her own.

because as we were reading these,

to the role. Do I just kinda back up
and let him do his thing?"

So, like, when you were giving me
that guidance,

so I should probably do

a little bit more to help him."

Well, it was also--
With the understanding that,

"Hey, this is just sort of
a-- a practice, like, this is a--

- I appreciate it, man.
-Don't even worry about it.

No, no, no. It's like something
you do in acting class.

Like, it just-- We're not gonna use it
for the bit,

but if you can say this like...
in falsetto...

it just, you know,
it just helps me-- I can say anything

and just make you do whatever I want,

as long as you know
that it helps my performance.

- Even if it sounds absurd.

Did you ever wonder, like,

"This guy's a famous celebrity actor.
Like, how am I gonna help him?"

Or were you just like,

that's exactly my thought process,

And they really do wonders
