That was always the joy to me.

And by the way, did not know

-if people would be down with that.
- Yeah.

As opposed to a more flashy,

more reality-show thing
to get an audience.

I'm just happy
people are watching the show, guys.

- No, you guys--
- It's crazy.

- You guys--
- It's insane.

You guys
did something so special.

- You guys did.

Margaritas, mar-margaritas!

Hey.

Not-- Maria and I rehearsing

our, uh, heh,
our handshake for hours.

So yesterday we had a day off
and we had our hotel bailiff...

Yeah, I wasn't
the only obnoxious one.

You know, both hotels altogether, so...

It was so joyful to see--

'Cause, again, there's a lot of footage
that's not in the show--

to see you two and energy
between you two you put in it.

And sometimes, we'd literally
have to separate you guys

-because...

...because it would be a moment
where we didn't want

to feel too happy in the room, right?

-Like whatever deed we needed Ronald...

...and we'd be like, "You guys gotta...

-...not be so fun right now."
- We gotta chill out, I know.

- It was so bad.
- Well, two things.

We weren't--
We wanted to do a different song

that we couldn't say
because it was beyond 1923.

-So, Cassandra and I

had to make up this song.

- Oh, right, you got to just...
- Song and dance.

- Yeah, yeah.
- Margarita, margarita...

- Hey...
- I'm enjoying

-the subtle wardrobe change for James.

See if he comes in a blue collar.

Going into the everyman.

- The everyman.
- When did Ron--

I don't think it ended up
being in the show,

but do you remember
when James kind of first...

hinted to you or told you

that he was kind of be
in character for a while?

How did-- How did that idea
get across to you?

Well, so--
And again, I'm not an actor.

I've never been in this world.
He did mention something

about method acting.

I didn't have my phone.
I couldn't Google it.

-I had no idea what that meant.
- Right.

So, I didn't-- I had no idea
what to expect from him.

And then you felt--
and then you're like,

"Like wait, is he doing a voi--?"

Like how did you start realizing
what he was doing?

It was when he was sitting
on the forklift at the end,

and I was, like, "What the hell
is this guy doing?"

That was one
of the moments, I didn't know,

I was most nervous about, to be honest.

The whole going
into the character method thing,

I was worried that that was going to fly.

And I think at think point, I got enough,

I got enough belief in Ronald

that like I'm-- I'm an eccentric...

...self-involved actor,

that he would buy
the fact that, you know,

maybe most actors
don't go into character

while they're doing other st--
you know, whatever they're doing

at the court.

But at this point,

maybe you would believe
that James Marsden

is just enough of a jackass
to actually try to go into it.

But I'm mixing it with conviction as well.

Like, I'm actually really
genuinely trying to be thins character.

That's what made it
so funny to watch.

And we talked about it, Jake,
about like how goofy

is the accent, how, like...

Be dee bow ding dong ding.

I go, like,
"No, no, can you do like...

Supposed to be an Oscar movie.

"...Bradley Cooper from American Sniper.

Or like Matt Damon from Stillwater,"
or something like that, right?

Yeah, I wrote Lone Pine

-and it was, uh...
- Yeah, it was.

It was just Stillwater.

-It was just precisely...
- That's hilarious.

...exactly Stillwater.

Kudos to Pramode,
also, for that song,

'cause he just pulled that
out of nowhere...

-...and it was so cool. It was so cool.
- Oh, that was so funny.

Well, this was a, production wise,

our most stressful day
because all the other episodes

is actually two or three days
distilled down to one, right?

-We're doing boring stuff in between.
- Yeah.

The whole idea of the pressure
of getting to Margaritaville on time,

we had to do--
This entire episode was just one day,

one real day of filming you guys in court,

trying to get to Margaritaville on time
and then having dinner at Margaritaville.

And that was very hard to try
to pull off all the beats in one day.

And we didn't have the space
to rehearse in that much either, did we?

- Right.
- Although the day before,

because we were shooting
during the pandemic,

we had a fake COVID scare.

-So Ronald was stuck in his room

and we took the whole cast--

He thought everyone else
was in their room.

We took the whole cast down to the factory
and then to Margaritaville.

So the day before we filmed this,

-we did a full run without Ronald...
- Right.

...trying to remember so we could
actually get through it all in one day.

- Mm-hmm.
- And the only person that didn't

have any story beats was Edy,
so she stayed behind

at the hotel with Ronald
and they watched movies all day.

- Aww.
- Nice.

That was when we watched
Dewey Cox, yeah, I remember.

- Edy talked about that.

She was, like, "You know,
I like really, really had fun...

-...with Ronald today."
- Yeah.

That makes me so happy to hear.
I had such a great time with her.

I'm so glad that that wasn't acting.

You know, that's what made
this whole thing so cool.

Yeah.

And that's what people--
I mean, I guess,

if they watch the show,
they realize it now,

but the way to make the show work

with all the extra down time
that's not on, that doesn't get edited in,

that also where people are basically being
as much as themselves as possible

and actually just hanging out
and connecting with you and being friends.

You know, with a different name,

but being themselves,
and we don't put that in the show, right?

It's those heightened character moments
that make it in the show.

-And that's kind of how, how it works.
- Yeah, there's like real bonding

-happening during those hours a day...
- Mm-hmm.

...with Ronald, we're also in character.

-But the connections are real.
- Sorry.

James, James giving a nice yank

-to the printer.

Stop it! Stop!

- The whole thing was an essay...
- He's so annoying.

He's just desperate
for your validation.

- My brain started to hurt

from the amount
I was rolling my eyes at you.

This was--
Also, this, and a little bit later here,

I did not think this was gonna work.

I was-- I was-- There were more people
that were optimistic,

more optimistic than me,
about getting Ronald

-to get upstairs in that room.
- Yes.

And then the, uh...

I know we're getting ahead
of ourselves here, but the...

the mannequins and the smell
and Todd jumping out was, like...

"Good luck. I hope this works, but, boy,
how are we gonna get him up there?"

- So nuts.
- Forget how we constructed that.

Well, that was, like,
gettin' dirty, James.

It's one of the best examples
of, like, how to try to plan this show is,

it was like what I've been
referring to as flow chart directing,

of, like, "Okay, here's how we're going
to try to get him up first.

If this doesn't work, we should try this.

What do we know about Ronald by now?
Like, oh, he might not want to go."

And I remember it was, like,

"Okay, we gotta send two other people.

If he really won't go,
we're gonna give you a cue,

we're gonna send to other people up

to show him that it's okay
and he won't get in trouble."

And I remember
specifically selecting

two actors who he felt close with, right?

It was Lonnie-specific, because...

- To be with him.
- To be with him...

...because he needed
to go up there, right, right.

Yeah, we needed Lonnie
to be your partner that day.

Right. We watched
throughout the first,

you know, however many--
What, we're a week and a half in now--

seeing who Ronald would be
kind of gravitating towards.

-Jesus.

- Is it in-- Is it in where you--
- I think I actually spit

on the floor and rubbed it in
and licked it off.

- Ugh!
- Yeah.

Doing ridiculous stuff and...

Well, I think
you were trying to figure out

if Trevor had really peed.

I think there was
a trace of urine there.

- I think he spit on the ground

-and you're like, "That's piss."
- Ew!

- I don't remember that.

-See how it's very clean at the bottom?
- Yeah.

If he tries to claim
that this wasn't here,

I can see some validation
in the simple fact

that looks like a new HVAC.

He's taking it
so seriously, I love it.

Ronald, did you think
that you could go up there?

No, not at all.
Um, you guys, it was very crucial

that you guys had two other people
go up before us...

- Yeah, Ron and I...
-...because I wasn't goin' up there, yeah.

- Ron and I...
- There's a good 15 minutes

before we even sent, uh,
Ken and Vanessa up there,

because we had to see
if you were going to go,

and then I remember
putting in the call, like,

"All right, give him the signal,
tell him to go up. Tell him to go up."

Yeah, to Lonnie's credit,
he was trying to get me to go up there

the whole time, but I'm, like,
"Dude, nothing happened up there.

-This is where we need to be, you know."
- There he goes.

And then as soon as he went up,

-we scattered...
- Oh, my God.

...to go do something, didn't we?

I remember everybody was, like,
"He's upstairs, he's upstairs.

He's upstairs. We got him up,
we got him up there."

- No.
- "Oh, my God, it's happening."

I remember, I remember
pitching this bit in the room.

I drew a bunch of stick figures,
and was, like,

- "It'll be like Westworld."

And, boy, did we not have
the budget for that.

And then, Ronald,...

You just used
stock footage of it.

Ronald, you got the flashlight
from him at one point,

and I remember, he had an earpiece in,
and I was screaming, I was, like,

"Get the flashlight back,
take it back from him,"

because the whole point of,
you had to investigate this room,

but we didn't want you to find
the cameras that we hid up there.

-So I was so nervous about you...
- Oh...

-... having a flashlight.
- Yeah, I was wondering

why Lonnie was so hesitant
to give me the flashlight.

I was like, "Dude, just let me see it,
like what's the big deal, you know?"

Are you, in your mind,
are you like cracking this case right now?

- Ah, in a sense, yeah.

-I was definitely piecing it together.

I will say, though, the reason I thought
this was so funny

was because I thought Todd
heard us coming up there

and was intentionally trying to scare us,

because that's exactly
what I would've done.

You know, if would've been
in that dark room by myself,

I hear people come in,
I'm scaring 'em, absolutely.

Learned something new
about Ronald.

Um, sorry.

-Hey, it's okay. Hey, Todd, it's okay.
-No, it's okay. No, yeah.

"It's okay, it's okay."
Oh, my God, you're so sweet.

- We were laughing so hard.
- Guys, a testament to David.

He, oh, he looked so freaked out...

-...and fried and startled.
- Yes.

And, like, dude,
he's such a good actor.

-...seem to have soiled my shirt...

Also that shot
of the hidden camera

just getting lucky and capturing
his fall perfectly.

-And you see him pouring the drink on us.
- Yes.

- Rehearsed the heck out of this.
- I was gonna say...

...in fact, most of our rehearsal
on this day was for this room.

- Yeah, this was it.
- And he's shirtless.

That perfect
behind-the-mannequin shot.

Again, this is
one of the ones where I was, like,

"I think Ronald's in by now,
but we might blow it here."

- Yeah.
- Telling him to take

a shirt from the factory and put it on.

Oh, yeah, I was trying
to do everything I could

to get him to not put that on.

Fashion-wise, does it look okay?

What the is going on?

But when he was,
like, just dead set on doing it,

I had him turn
his backpack backwards

so you couldn't read it,

I was, like, "All right,
if we're doing this..."

...here are Jean's answers.

- Yeah.
- Yeah.

No friend of mine's
gonna wear a wet shirt.

- True.

I think it came down
to Ish just being, like,

"I can't let my friend go down there

with-- in a wet shirt," and you were,
like, "Yeah, that's a great point."

There is not.

"How much urine can
a Cinnamon & Sparrow shirt absorb?"

Is this a joke?

I think
that was a Todd question.

- Yeah.
- It was supposed to be.

"Was this where"--
I'm pointing so you can all see me.

- The hat, yes. Yes. Yes.
- Come on, Alan. Come on, Alan.

- Yes. Yes. Yes.
- Getting through the day here.

This was the most--
Every time a court thing like this,

or a field trip, it's, like,
"And then we want to do this,

and, Alan, we'll have you do this,"
and then we just look and go, like,

"And would a judge do that?

-I don't know, is that okay?"

"Can you do that?"
We have to, like, pitch story beats

and then check it out
with all our lawyers.

No. That's it, I think.

-Your Honor, I'd like to ask...
- Again, it's such a gift

that we had Alan,
and just anchored this whole thing.

- Impossible without him.
- Right. Yeah. Impossible.

Um, I was wondering,
if the human body became wet,

uh, would there be any equivalent...

This is-- And that's Jean,
the actual, his actual T-shirt factory.

-And he was so great to us.
- Yes.

And let us get in there and shoot there
and I think he had a blast.

like, I mean, look at Evan's suit

needs to be just kind of a bad suit.

- Yeah.

I will say, James,

This is another deal.
Like, I had to hide,

kind of, back in the factory.

- Yeah, sneak back?
- Yep. Couldn't be obvious.

And these are big swings.
Again, to pull this off...

That's so good a move.

That part cracks me up.

Well, and I did that for...
maybe a good five minutes.

for him to come back in.

- Yes.
- Right, to see it.

I called Margaritaville...

Yeah, Ronald,
never knowing exactly

when you would come
around a corner to see something,

a lot of our actors
were like in animatronic mode,

like repeating action over and over,
and waiting and waiting.

For three Chuck E. Cheese characters.

Waiting for you to see it.

It's like double Dutch,
when are we gonna throw

-the dice, you know?
- Yeah.

Pretty sure Pramode just
showed up in his sunglasses by the way.

Yes.

He's a bum that got high.

Shootin' from the hip.

Just a quick
three hour drive to Margaritaville.

- Oh, my God!
- Here's another thing, like,

that the audience doesn't
necessarily think of all the time.

Obviously, there's times
when Ronald sees cameramen

pointing cameras at him,
and then there's other times

where there's hidden cameras, right?
This is one of them, right?

I mean, were there planted cameras
on the bus?

No, on the bus,
you could see the cameras.

- Okay, Okay.
- On this bus, it was, like,

this is part of the court case
of the documentary crew's there.

- Got it. Right.
- But in Margaritaville,

like, the cameras
came with you guys to Margaritaville,

-and then, you know...
- He's first.

'Cause, Ronald, right,
we told you guys, like, have lunch,

we're gettin' dinner too, we're takin'
a break, all the cameras disappeared,

and then you didn't know that we had
all these hidden cameras still in there.

Correct, yes.

That was a big part
of it too, what should we play

in front of a documentary crew
for Ronald, because that affects

how people act
when they know they're being filmed,

and what would we do
when you don't know

there's cameras still there, right?

Oh, my God,
we wanted to drink so bad.

Oh, my God!

We were, like,
"Please order me a damn drink!"

All non-alcoholic drinks.

That was one of
my favorite things to see in the footage.

Wait, who's
was non-alcoholic?

I did not see
that happening when it was happening.

I only realized later in the footage
that you guys were going nuts

to, like, finally order a beer.

We were, like,
"Go, go ahead, go ahead." Heh.

In episode, um, episode eight, yeah.

- Yes, right.
- We're so far in it

at this point, this is
the blending of reality

-in our fiction, too.
- Yes.

- Okay, we are here.
- Yeah. Yeah.

- Let's have a drink, come on.
- Yeah.

- And this next-- The next epis--
- We've earned it.

Well, this next part,
I was literally so stressed out.

No, we need to order at the table.

-Do you want--
-Please?

Do you wanna do the talking?

Okay.

It was her job to be there.

If you don't do this...

-...I'm gonna let everyone down.
- That was a tough one.

The scene doesn't go on.

-I'm, like, "You better do this."
- Yeah, it was high pressure.

And he did. Thank you.

- I hated you in this moment.
- That took a while.

I hated Inez.
I was, like, "Oh, great."

- No, you didn't.
- How you gonna do me like this?

- I remember that taking a while.
- Yeah, it did.

To convince him
to go over to that table.

By the way, this is
one of the great character actors

of our time, Biff Wiff.

- Biff!
- Biff Wiff!

- Biff...

We don't know how long you guys have.
Um, just curious.

Ronald, are you just trying
to get out of there?

I was trying
to literally get out of there.

Inez put me
in an uncomfortable situation

-I was not prepared for.
- No... I know, I love you!

I thought I was showing up
for moral support, you know.

- She's like you wanna use the bus.
- Then she's like, "You ask him."

"Oh, my friend
wants to ask you something."

For anyone's that curious,
and I don't think they really show up,

you can kind of see one,
that big mirror behind them there.

- Oh, yeah.
- The hidden cameras are all

in these sort of, like,
Margaritaville-themed, like, tiki sheds

-that have some mirrors. It is...
- Yes.

They sort of look like pillars,
they sort of look like just part of the...

- Decor.
-...part of the decor

of the restaurant, yeah.

And we had
to add lighting, too,

so that we could like have
enough light to film you guys.

-And had to make that seem all...
- Andres!

And also, there was
no music in Margaritaville.

-Did you notice that, Ronald?
- I didn't-- I've never been

-to Margaritaville, so I didn't...
- I mean, except for chatter.

Well, I didn't know that
they even played music there normally.

-'Cause I'd never been.
- By the way, kudos

to Margaritaville
for letting us film there,

'cause Margaritaville was written
into a script early on,

and we were, like,
this would be so great

-to go to Margaritaville...
- Oh, man, yeah.

...but how are we actually gonna
and do it, then work it out?

And how did that happen?
I'm curious.

I don't know,
we asked 'em and they said yes, right?

- Essentially?
- I mean, we had to pay 'em...

-...and then work that angle.
- Buffett's my boy!

- This is where we started

to worry that the word "jorf"
was actually something

that could be loo-- No, looked up?

But it was-- Did we insert--

on the urban dictionary

two months beforehand
so it would be there.

And it's something very offensive.

she was so good as our waitress...

- Yes!
-...and then we had Luke Millington-Drake

and Damon as the guests back there,

and just pivot--
Those tiny roles are pivotal...

- Yes.
- ...to creating the reality.

That was actually
one of the last-- But, yeah, Ronald,

you were talking that, that was one
of the last things you realized,

just that everybody
in the restaurant was fake,

and the people
that complained were fake.

- Yeah.
- That was one of the harder

times to suspend disbelief.
- That's insane.

White supremacists.

Table two, because, like,
it doesn't show it in here,

but as they walk by when they're leaving,

like, I could see them,
'cause I'm sure you guys planted me there

to be in my eye sight,
but as they were leaving,

they made it a point
to walk by and touch Todd

and be, like,
"Hey, thanks for changing your shirt.

You shouldn't be wearing
that stuff anyways,"

you know, something like that,
and I just remember

-just getting so annoyed at that.
- Yeah.

- Protecting your bud.
- I mean, we didn't know.

David shirtless
in Margaritaville.

Yeah, I hated that part too.

I was, like, "Ah, why aren't you
in the bathroom?"

Ronald.

But ultimately,
I mean, this dinner

and having a few drinks
and hanging out,

it must've felt like a release,
in a way, to, like, get this moment

out of court, and all that, right?

Because I think for the actors
it felt like a release

-just to get to hang a little bit.
- For sure.

Oh, absolutely. And well,
'cause, like, James said earlier,

this was, like, I think this was the end
of our second week, you know.

So we'd been sequestered
for, like, 14, 15 days.

"Salt! Salt! Salt!"
The pocket.

How long did you breastfeed?

I think Nikki just asked the bartender
if he likes handcuffs.

I know my skin is, like,
almost the same as yours...

If I remember correctly,
this is a moment

that we were most worried about.

-The bill, picking up the bill.
- Oh, my God, yeah.

How're we gettin'--
Who's paying for it?

And it came up to the last--
The day before we shot it.

We were figuring out--
Because it used to be-- It was a bit--

- It was a hot--
- I'm getting ahead of myself.

It was a hot wing eating contest.

- That's right.
- How did it change

-to the arm wrestling?
- And we're like, "There's no way

that he's gonna buy that--

So, we set it up that
there was gonna be a tray hot wings

that were-- the actors were gonna try,
and it was gonna be way too hot,

and we couldn't even get through a bite,

but the idea was, if you cleared
this whole plate of these hot wings,

-that we'll pick up your bill.
- Your bill would be free, yeah.

But then we were gonna give
Ronald the hot wing plate

-that obviously wasn't as hot or spicy...
- Not as spicy.

...and he'd be, like,
"Well, these aren't that bad."

- Yeah.
- We're, like, "There's no way.

This guy's switched on,
there's no way he's gonna buy this."

- Yeah, I know.
- He'd also eaten a full meal,

too, which he'd do this as a dessert.

-Do you like hot wings, Ronald?
- You know, I was gonna say,

you guys had so many close calls,
and it's crazy how this all unfolded,

because if you guys would've done
the hot wings thing,

I wouldn't have even attempted--
I can't eat hot stuff.

I'm terrible at it, cannot do it,

so, like, you guys got so lucky

that you didn't go with that one,
because I wouldn't have even attempted it.

- Right.
- I think we did know.

We found out, someone maybe asked you,
and they we got word, like,

"Ronald doesn't like spicy."

Maybe that's what it was,
the day before, I think, uh,

Jeanie, Edy, like maybe found out,
like, "He doesn't like spicy,

it's not gonna work."

But then, also, last second asking James
to believably pull off a reason

to have an arm wrestle contest
for dinner?

I was all-- I felt so bad
putting that on you, James.

Well, no, it was just, like,
what can we actually control?

What sort of contest or something
that we can actually, I could throw it,

-and, of course, I did.
- Here's the big question.

Did you let him win?

That's another one
I get asked quite a bit.

- Did you let him win?

- Oh, come on, seriously.
- Of cour-- Look at him.

-He's 6'6", I'm 5'10", of course he won.

And you just believe
what you want to believe.

Now you know
why James was working out in the...

I know. I did notice.

I think that might've been
the first question that Ronald asked me

after the whole thing, like,
"Sorry, man! That was great, right?"

And he was, like, "Yeah, but did
you really beat me at arm wrestling?"

"Did I-- Did I really beat you?"

I will say,
one of my biggest fears

out of all this gaining so much attention

is that I'm going to be invited
on that Hot Ones, the First We Feast.

-'Cause like, I-- I mean, I can't--
- The what?

I can't turn that show down.
That would be a great interview with us.

- Oh, the Hot Ones, yes.
- I can't--

Oh, man, DJ Khaled,
I'll tap out on the third wing, you know.

- We got to get you

-on Hot Ones, baby.
- No, I just can't.

- So, here's Mekki drinking...
- Oh, my God.

...what, four, at least four or five

-...virgin, sugary drinks.
- Virgin, watermelon...

Four or five, yeah.

Somewhere around the end of dinner,

I, like, said to Edy, like,
"I'm gonna throw up...

-"...and I'm gonna-- I'm-- I'm--
- Eww.

-It's just coming."
- Just from too much sugar.

Just from sugar really,
theses were virgins.

There was no-- I don't drink,
so it's like, there was no alcohol at all.

Um, it was just like, ugh,
extremely high volume of liquid.

- Don't give this guy Kool-Aid.

Yeah, for real.

It turned out
to be a real treasure,

but, boy, that sure would've been fun
to see you get drunk

for the first time in this scene!

Ah, yeah,
that would've been...

By the way,
playing drunk believably

in front of another person,
one of the hardest things to do.

- A non-drinker, too.
- Yes, a non-drinker.

You really knocked it out of the park.

- Yeah, you did.
- I was so impressed.

Thank you.
Yeah, that was nerve-wracking.

You know, and also,
to add to the realism, too,

like, to believe
that you guys were drunk,

when you guys got
your first round of drinks,

Kirk actually handed me
his Cadillac margarita,

and he's like, "Try this," and I was like,
"Oh, God, yeah, like, that's strong."

So I had tasted the alcohol,
so I was, like,

"Oh, yeah, these guys
are really drinking."

- I feel like...
- Well...

I was gonna say,
Vanessa, were you actually,

-uh, drunk, uh, in the scene?
- Oh, no, they gave us one drink.

-We had one real drink.
- We had only one drink.

I thought you guys found
a way to steal another drink or something.

- Just once.

All right, James,
here's our predicament.

Again, I did not think
