You realize you're watching a
real human experience the whole time.

What's interesting,
I've had people tell me that

they've seen it thinking that
Ronald was also an actor...

Oh, my gosh, so many people

-think he's an actor. I know.
- But it was still good.

It's like, "No, man."

And then a new appreciation
once they saw it again.

I have so many friends texting me.

"Is he really a regular person?" "Yes."

I think episode five
really lets people know I'm not an actor.

That's when
I'm reading lines with James.

- Oh, my God. It's my favorite.

It's my favorite episode.

The Internet
would disagree with you, James.

No, it is the funniest one.

You were with him the whole time.
It was so good.

Like this morning coming in, packing up,

you're like,
"Okay, I guess I've packed a suitcase.

Now I'm showing up and I don't know
where I'm staying tonight."

Yeah.
That's exactly what I was thinking.

I was honestly worried that
we were gonna have to share a room.

-That was my biggest fear.
-Should we stand?

I wanted to reintroduce
Nikki, my bailiff, and...

- Hi, Nikki.

Uh, first of all,
I wanna thank you for your patience.

There's a few people
I couldn't look at

while we were doing these scenes.

- Why?
- And Shids was one of 'em.

Because her face would start to--
her little mouth

would start to curl up
and she'd start to get,

get like, you know, get the giggles
and would just be contagious.

And the other was Ron.
I just couldn't look at him...

Yeah.

...when he was doing his slow talking.

There's actually so much of Ron

as of Ken's character that ultimately
didn't make the edit because--

- Because of timing?
- Because of timing.

But it was so funny in real time
that he would go

in these big speeches
and conversations with you, Ronald,

and he would just take so long
to get through the lines.

- That Ron Song who plays Ken.
- Yeah. Well...

It was a testament to my patience
to have a full-on conversation with Ken.

'Cause it-- Oh, man,
they were so, so long.

This is--
I get so many people saying this bit,

which is ever--
Does Lonnie ever felt marginalized?

I feel marginalized.
Lonnie, what about you?

That slow blink. He's like...

You ever felt like treated

And, Ronald,
you and Ish, or Lonnie in the show,

like, he's one of the people early on
you connected with as well.

I would say him and Jeannie
were definitely the first two

I connected with. Absolutely.

It was the hardest
to keep it together, listening to him.

- Talk about his gumball machines

When he put his debt
in terms of gumball machines...

I wish that would've made it.

What was your take on him
as a businessman?

'Cause you were very nice to him.

I thought it was
a questionable route he was taking,

but if he could make it work,
good for him.

- There was so many things

that we did little rehearsals
on our bus rides to and from,

like the T-shirt factory,
where we were just, you know,

getting used to the-- the chat
and the setups on the bus.

And I remember her going on
about her bits about all the old

-great musicians she slept with.
- Which she slept with. Yeah.

Did you buy that one
or did you watch it on Hulu?

- This is my favorite.

James, right-- right there,

like, that was the official moment
when I was like,

"Oh, my God,
I cannot fangirl over this guy."

Once I realized you were
in Recs and Sex Drive, I was like,

"All right, I gotta keep it cool."

And the internet is like,
"We love that that's the movie

that Ronald loved from James'..."

It is a great comedy performance.

It's so underrated, man.
You killed it.

Take your phones out
and write down any phone number

that you will need to contact.

- I know. What were you thinking?
- My stocks!

I was thinking I had some options expiring
and I was gonna lose money.

This is the other big moment.
We were like,

"If we can get past this,
we might have a show."

But we thought, "No matter what, you know,
he's gonna freak out about this."

You can see all the other actors like,

"Right. I gotta pretend
to be freaked out too."

And then everyone was kinda looking
at Ronald going like,

"Oh, he's-- he's dealing with it okay.
Maybe I should deal with it."

"Okay." Not sure how to play it.

Yeah, James's resistance though,

this made it very, very believable because
obviously James is gonna resist us.

He's trying so hard
to look like so important.

And I just...
I didn't even know who he was. I saw...

Roasted.

That part was true.
I didn't remember you.

Okay. You don't have to...

Come on. This is not a tell-all.

- So I--
- Hey, great.

I'm the forgettable guy.

I actually never saw Todd's ear,
which kind of bummed me.

I only ever heard about it
being discussed. Never saw it.

Yeah. I think that was done
intentionally though,

because I think they didn't want it to--

I don't know. I was told that
that was done intentionally.

Maybe you guys can speak to that.

No, we weren't trying
to hide it.

I think you were
really preoccupied with--

But again, then balancing it,
like, if everything comes your way,

-you're gonna get suspicious.

If we put everything

So things have to be happening
on the periphery as well.

It's also probably good
you didn't see a piece of speaker wire

clipped to a rubber ear that
we were trying to say it was a telephone.

It is kind of a nice break
to be away from the phone.

It is nice being able to talk
to somebody and they're not doing this...

That was a direction that we had,
was like, if you're gonna do a bit,

it doesn't necessarily have to be
in front of you.

Just make it like
you would be in frame basically,

or you would be around, so that way,
that it could be used, you know?

Absolutely.

- Ladies and gentlemen...

I think that Shid's
actually walking away from your bit there.

But then looking at her face,
she does always have this grim...

This was like a full year before that...

that this is, yeah, related to that.

...of the defendant's conduct.

Ronald, I'm very curious,
and you talk about it a little bit

in the show, but what--
Well, I don't wanna talk over this,

but I wanna know your impressions of them,

the lawyers and defendants
when you saw them.

And also the impression of this
being played in court early on.

He showed up disruptive to work.

- It's very glossy.
- Everyone was so funny.

Oh, my gosh.

Clearly intoxicated.

It was evident to everyone
that the defendant

both used drugs at work
and encouraged others to do so.

As a result of his wildly out of control
drug and alcohol abuse...

Were we worried at all
that this animation was--

I mean, 'cause it's all about tone
with this stuff, right?

- Yes.
- Was the animation

-gonna be too goofy?
- Yeah. And they do--

-they do play animations in court, right?
- Yeah.

But yeah, Ronald,
how is it hitting you?

I mean, when I saw this,
I literally, like--

I just thought
they were trying to just get

like an emotional plea from people.

They're like, they were trying
to anger people.

They were trying
to bring some shock value.

So, truthfully, I didn't really pay
too much attention to the video,

'cause I saw it
as like a defamation video.

I made a mockumentary
a couple years ago

with Andy Samberg called 7 Days In Hell.

And we... I went back to this company--
We had a company make an animation

of a crazy fake prison sequence in that
that has a lot of inappropriate nudity.

And then when we were planning this,
I was like,

"Oh, I got these guys
that can make these animations.

We gotta go use them for this."

- They're the ones who did it?
- Yeah, same team, yeah.

Get logged on here, then I wanna...

- Shaun Sanders.

He's so good.

Barbara already dozing off.

There was a part in voir dire
where there was like, uh...

It was one of the extra actors.

It was a Black guy,
and the whole group of people...

It was like, you know,
a couple different ethnicities,

but there was one Black guy,

-one Black person...
- I remember that one.

And finally, Evan gets
to the Black guy and he says his name,

and the guy stands up and he is like,
"How you doing?"

And he's like, "That's all I want."
And he sits back.

He's like,
"Thank you very much."

- "Thanks for being here."

And for anybody
that doesn't know Evan Williams,

who's the defense lawyer, uh,

he was a real lawyer also
for, like, nine years.

No, that's nine cases.

Nine cases. He was practicing
for like three years, I think.

Yeah, and...
Yeah, he talked about this being cathartic

because he got to do every wrong thing

that he was always afraid of doing
in court.

Yeah, that's the way, you know--

We really should have picked
an easier scenario for ourselves

to pull off than a court case.

But the only way it worked
is that Evan who plays Shaun

and Trisha who plays Debra
were real lawyers,

who are now actors and writers
and performers,

but have real law training experience
because we would need them...

Again, you don't see it in the show.

We would need them to riff for an hour
and do legalese

and do motions before the court.

We work very hard to try
to get all of you together...

I have said many times that
the real prank is that for three weeks,

we all sat in court
on a stupid fake case that we made up

-for six hours a day.
- Right.

Susan had the bit
about falling asleep,

but I truly fell asleep
every day that we were in court.

Well, that's what would happen,
right? When Ronald would somehow--

There were a few times he got suspicious
and Jake would say,

"We gotta pull it back now,"
and, and like you said,

let the lawyers go in
and do all the legalese boring, you know,

droning on in court and we would
actually be taking real naps.

- Oh, yeah.

There was a lot of doodling.
I've seen a lot of the jurors' notebooks.

-A lot of really fascinating doodle.
- Very interesting ones, right?

I was gonna say
some really interesting...

I found some in my notebook.

I know. I'm like notebook--
It was like being in,

you know, high school again,
like passing notes.

By the way, that bailiff
is our producer, Matt McIntyre,

who is-- we had to put in a uniform.

Ronald,
what were you thinking here?

- Yeah. Take us through it.
- Did you think this was

a real thing that I could get
my own bailiff and all this?

I mean, I wasn't that surprised
because I was like,

"Yeah, I'm sure this guy
probably has the money to do it."

Obviously, I don't really know
how these things work.

- Oh, do I?
- But I was not happy about it.

Yeah. And again, you know, I was stoked
that not only did you make it on the jury,

but I was like, "Oh, my God,
this guy's gonna stay in my hotel too,"

and I was like, "Shit."

Where were you thinking
this was gonna go, Ronald?

The look of disappointment.

I thought you said you didn't
want a roommate at the hotel.

Only if it was you,
James Marsden.

Yeah. Only you, James.

Also, there's a lot
in that van of footage

that didn't make it of you, James,
on the ride home.

Not saying you were gonna have
your own bailiff and just going like,

"This is gonna be great, guys.
It won't be so bad.

Come on, it's like camp.
We'll get through it."

-And then you immediately bail.

There's a bit that got cut
that's one of my favorite things

that James improvised where he takes
us all to the middle of the parking lot

and points to the hill and says,

"You can actually see my house,
it's right up there.

It's the one with the Spanish roof."

Actually, I think
that was a Jake, that was a Jake line.

-He just pointed up at the hill.

He's like, "Not the second to the top one.

The top one.
Right there, looking over you."

Guardian angel.

Oh, man.
We spent so much time in that room.

- It was furnished just for you.
- This is another thing, right?

I mean, yes, I went home at the end
of the day and slept in my own bed.

These four actors and Ronald
were sequestered for three weeks...

- Yep. Crazy.
-...in this abandoned hotel.

It wasn't even
a fully operational hotel, right?

No, it was just us and maybe,
maybe some people using it as an office,

but pretty much just us
in an empty hotel,

and yeah, we really were right there
the entire time.

Because you never knew
if Ronald was gonna...

David. Just look at his face.

Ronald, you are playing
so nice to this guy who's like,

"Open the door between our rooms."

This thing that happens
is hilarious.

Totally just real, and it's one
of my favorite moments of the entire show.

When Todd goes behind and startles sheets.

-It is so freaking funny.
- It's genuine.

- Her reaction is so real.
- Could not be recreated

if we tried.

I'm going to check in
the other two downstairs.

She's looking for him.

There'll be another officer over here
to make sure

that y'all are good for food,
things like that.

-I'm sorry.
-Don't. I don't like people behind me.

Yeah, sorry.

The two rooms that we have
are next to each other.

This is the first moment where
the character of Todd was supposed to--

-was supposed to test, you know--
- Wait, no.

David came up with that on his own.
That-- that note. Wasn't that David's?

- Oh, really?
- Yeah, it was.

Well, I guess
it might have been a written bit.

Yeah,
but what he wrote and stuff...

Yeah. Okay, okay, okay.

Him being kind of
in a room side by side

and he's kind of this eccentric weirdo.

Oh, got it, got it, got it. Okay.

And this is when we start
to fall in love with Ronald Gladden.

Well, here's the thing
that people don't realize too,

was that Todd was also made out
to be a fresh out of prison felon.

You know, they made a pretty big deal
about that in court.

- That's right.
- Yeah, like-- And so,

I was under the impression
not only was he this, you know,

-kind of weird guy, but he was also--
- One of the major storylines

that got cut is in front of the judge
in voir dire,

we say he's like just had
his rights restored, and it--

- So did Todd scare you?
- No.

But you did think
he was a felon.

- I did, yeah.
- But how did you get past that?

Your pass doesn't
define you, man. People can change.

I love this guy.

Come through, Ronald.
Come through.

-...inside the house.
- What is a casita?

It's like a guest house.

You should've seen his face when
I was putting my makeup on this morning.

You put-- you put--
you put makeup on?

David was next
to Ronald's room

and was so afraid of Ronald finding out

that he had access to technology
that Ronald didn't have.

He didn't type on his keyboard,

-he didn't use his phone really.
- Wow.

He was so terrified
of alerting Ronald and ruining everything

-that he kind of just sat in there.
- David is amazing.

- Yeah, he really committed.
- David was really...

That was the moment
where you let us know

you were actually
a little miffed with James.

I feel like you can tell,
yeah, just by--

But like again, you know,
I was just trying to keep it calm,

keep it professional.

-I wanna be foreperson.
- Oh, here we go.

The foreperson battle.

And were you thinking,
Ronald, like, "Okay, this--"

What were you thinking
this documentary was gonna be, right?

'Cause everyone asked like--
There's cameras around,

obviously picking up all this dialogue
and you're getting interviewed.

You just thought it was gonna be
a boring documentary being made

that was gonna go to public broadcast
about jury duty.

That is exactly what I was thinking.

I did not think
this was gonna be entertaining at all.

I thought it was gonna be boring.

I thought it was gonna be informational
at best.

But I was there.

- Oh, his only line.
- His only line.

By the way, I do--
I want to give you the opportunity

in this audio commentary,

'cause I know, Ronald, a lot of people
going, "What is going on there?"

But I asked you afterwards, you actually
didn't hear what he said there.

Yeah, I'm really wasn't
a 100% sure what he said.

And my reaction was more
of just like a knee-jerk reaction.

Like, "Yeah, whatever.
Do what you gotta do," you know?

Right, right.

I wanted to give you
the opportunity to go on the record,

say you did not know
he was going to rub one out.

No judgment if I knew, though.

I was gonna say,
if you knew what he said,

would you have changed
what you replied with?

Shaun Sanders' incompetence,

like it really built a case
for Trevor though,

because I wanted so bad
for Trevor to win,

because I was like, "Oh, this guy is just
getting screwed over left and right."

Like, he does not have
a good representation.

-Like, he's, you know-- I hope he wins.
- Yeah.

Evan drinking
the Mountain Dew Code Red is one of--

What attorney is drinking--

Not just Mountain Dew,
but the Code Red version.

I think him
not being able to play the TV

was also spread out over two days.

I think he had so much
not being able to make it work.

was that he forgot to bring the cord,
so he couldn't hook it up.

We were worried that there were
too many pauses being taken to in court.

It's 10 minutes to 12.
Let's break for about 40 minutes.

- We were breaking all the time.

One of the great things
about Jeannie is that

she was the only character
who's really free to just like laugh

-and not give a shit about things.

And so funny.

Now this was--

Again, this is one of our moments
with a lot of rehearsal heading up to it.

A lot of nervousness.

We didn't wanna scare you
too much, Ronald,

like, we wanted to let you know
he was okay,

but we still wanted it to be a big deal.

And you see when I'm up there
with him and I didn't--

I actually didn't know that was when
we were gonna do that piece,

and I pull your shirt
'cause I really got so scared

when it happened
and you didn't even react.

It's right here.

Yeah. I want you guys
to take us through this.

I, like, pulled your shirt
so hard 'cause I got scared.

Right. So the scripted bit
is that Ron, Ken, uh,

spills water, and then Brandon
or Tim goes to get the paper towels.

I was like, "Why is my shirt fla--?"

I didn't even feel you pull that.

I pulled it so hard,

'cause I didn't know it was gonna
happen there for real, for real.

It was the perfect time
to make a pass at him.

After the incident.

- And then said?
- Maybe we should get coffee."

- And then?

Yeah, recently divorced.

There was discussion
about how--

what his reaction should be,
'cause we were like, "Let's not..."

He's very injured.

Inez was recently divorced

Dude, stepping on his hand
is one of the funniest...

That's so crazy.

He was our stunt guy who--

Luckily, Brandon has
a ton of comedy experience too.

But when we needed to cast
a stunt guy, then we said,

"Hey, will you stay here
for three days before this?

And you gotta go through
the whole process."

So we couldn't just cast
a stunt guy to come in for the day

like you normally do on the project.

We had to cast a stunt guy
and then have him be part

of our entire production for a week,
just leading up to that one stunt.

The name of Jesus.

Tim was easy to talk to.
Like, Tim was really nice to me.

Oh, God,
I hated this part so much.

Oh, wait, you hated this?

I hated it because,
like, there was a part of me

that just felt like
just such a bad person.

'Cause I was like, "Man, not only
did I never hear Tim talking,

I didn't see him communicate
with anybody."

I was like, "I never talked to the guy.

You guys have
all these great stories about him."

And I was like,
"Man, I am slacking over here."

Wasn't there-- Weren't you
just wondering, when did they talk to him?

'Cause you were there for the whole time
and no one ever talked to him.

That was one of the things
I was feeling, was confusion.

'Cause I was like,
"I didn't even see him talking to people."

And all these stories
are made up, right?

Yeah, it was just written
that some people would have stories,

but everybody, like Ross, Kirk,
they made up their own story about...

We went motorcycling
in Buenos Aires or something.

Look at his face.

- Aww!
- It's like slow motion. Aww.

And that's when I was like,
"Damn, I suck."

Aww!

- It shows.

-Not that you suck.
- Good timing.

It feels like a funeral too.
Like he died or something.

Somebody literally
just text me that they're watching now.

"It's like when Tim fell,
it's like he died."

And also what they don't--
what they leave out is that

Ronald actually went to go get him a card
and we all signed it.

-Remember that huge card?

We went to the grocery store
across from the hotel.

Yes. He got a get well card
and he had everybody sign it.

-I mean, we-- It was very brief.

I will say, even if I would've
known what he would've said to me,

I wouldn't have thrown him
under the bus for sure. No way.

How do you let people know
it's a flashback?

No, that's obviously-- Oh, gosh.

Obviously a big scripted bit

is have the only thing he ever says
to Ronald be this crazy thing.

And then will you tell us
what he said, you know?

I do remember too,

there were days you would bring in
your workout equipment,

and like the first thing when I walked
through the door, you'd be,

"Hey, man, you wanna workout?"
"No, not really."

Then you're over there
just grunting loud as hell.

We were really concerned about
letting you know that he was, like, okay

and not gonna be, like-- Were you worried
about him in that moment, Ronald?

I mean, like, it wasn't like the
first thing on my mind, but I was like,

-"Yeah, I hope the guy's okay."
- Right.

You didn't care that much
about him is what you're saying?

No, no. You're number 14, correct?

Yes, sir.

Helen was so good.

Such a good bit
to just leave James out of it.

That's so funny to me.

I was thinking
I was gonna jump up on the jury today.

As an alternate, you know,
you kind of feel like...

...an afterthought, to some degree.

But Lonnie's great,
and I think he's gonna do a great job.

And there was one take
where I was like,

"Oh, sorry. Just-- I messed that bit up.
Can I just-- Let's-- let's roll it again."

You tried to get another take.

That was really funny.

When you did that, James,
I had the same feeling

as when I saw you outta corner of my eye,
checking your hair on your phone.

I was just like,
"Oh, my God, this guy."

Loves-- He's so stage-starved.

He loves the spotlight.

God, he just plays it so perfectly.

You know, new chair.
It swivels and everything.

Kind of miss my, uh, my old spot.

That is great.

Just awkwardly

I haven't had an opportunity
to watch this yet.

One of the big questions
everyone asks when they see the show is,

when are the biggest moments
where almost everyone broke?

- I died.
- We had not seen

this animation,
so we're reacting to it live.

And there was a lot more
laughter that we were suppressing...

I had to bury my head completely
in my lap.

He so desperately wants
to compete with the other animations.

like the reactions are so different
between you guys and me because again,
