Original subtitles

I remember everything.

I can see things that happened in the past.

I can see things happening now.

All over the world.

We have suffered at each other's hands.

We have lost people we loved at each other's hands.

A good man does everything into his power to better his family's position.

What good is power if you cannot protect the ones you love?

This isn't about noble houses.

This is about the living and the dead.

The same thing is coming for all of us.

The enemy is real. It's always been real.

Dead men, dragons and dragon queens...

Whatever stands in our way...

We will defeat it.

The Seven Kingdoms need a monarch who could inspire the people.

You stand in the presence of the mother of dragons!

A ruler loved by millions.

You need to know the truth.

He is Rhaegar Targaryen He's the heir to the Iron Throne.

Before there were Targaryens there were Starks and Lannisters.

For centuries our families fought against their common enemy.

We need to do the same if we're gonna survive.

Together, we will save this country from those who would destroy it.

When the long night comes again...

I need to be ready.

GAME OF THRONES

Please welcome your host for this evening.

Rightful heir to the Late Night Throne.

Protector of House O'Brien.

Father of a tiny trouser dragon

and scorer of 100% Irish on 23andMe.

Conan O'Brien!

Please, remain seated! Thank you!

Thank you so much! Hello, Belfast! How are you?

Thank you! This is every comedian's dream:

to walk onstage to The Game of Thrones' team.

Because it so doesn't match how I feel about myself inside.

"I hate myself!"

I'm Conan O'Brien and welcome! This is a real honor.

I was chosen, over 15 other American talk-show hosts,

not because I'm the best, but because HBO said

"Look at him, he probably lives in Belfast."

"We can save on a hotel room."

True story, ladies and gentlemen: I am Irish and this is a true story.

Just last week I had my first DNA test. Never had one before.

Got the results back, my doctor called me

and he said: "I've never seen this before, Conan. You are..."

This is true! I swear to God. "You are 100 percent Irish."

"Not 99 percent, not 98, not 97... 100 percent genetically pure Irish."

I asked him to scientifically explain what that means and he said:

"You're inbred, you fucking idiot!"

130 years of brothers and sisters getting it on in Massachusetts.

But we'll talk about the Lannisters later. Listen...

This is a special night, a chance to get everyone together, reminisce

and say good-bye to what is considered

on of the greatest television shows of all time.

This is my first time in Belfast. And I love visiting Ireland.

I came here years ago and I drove from Kerry to Dublin.

I don't know if you've ever done that drive,

you start at Kerry and you drive across the countryside.

I had so many great adventures... One of them...

Was such an important moment to me. I stopped at a gas station.

In the middle of the countryside.

It's the kind of gas station you only find in Ireland: a cottage.

Just a little cottage in the woods. One pump.

And it was run by a very friendly old woman.

And this is true. She came out and she starts filling my tank.

And she asked me what village my people were from.

- Already? - Yes.

You fucking dick!

"I'm Kit Harington, I can do whatever I want!"

I'll settle this hash later.

Where was I?

I met this old lady and she's filling up the gas tank

and she's filling it up and we have this great moment.

She's just this little old lady and she's filling up my gas tank

she asks me where my people were from, I tell her what village,

she starts to say "I know people in that village"

and then she says "You know what I'm gonna do?"

I'm gonna light a candle for you tonight in the church."

She started to get weepy, I got weepy, we actually hug,

I got back in the car... Tears down my cheeks...

I got back in the car I start it up and I drive.

15 minutes later my car grinds to a halt.

And I realized that old woman had filled my Diesel engine

with unleaded gas.

In that moment, all I wanted to do was hike back to that gas station

and strangle that old bitch.

Just see the light leaves her eyes!

And I realized it's the perfect Irish story.

It has love, it has tragedy, it has revenge...

All the themes we'll be exploring tonight,

as we celebrate the eight glorious seasons of Game of Thrones.

Ladies and gentlemen, this is exciting!

So exciting to be in Belfast, the seat of Northern Ireland,

the real home of Westeros

and no better place to raise a glass to Game of Thrones

than in this amazing city that gave it life.

Tonight we're celebrating with the people who made it all happen.

Our audience is entirely made up of the Game of Thrones cast and crew.

Give yourselves a hand. This is an amazing night.

You've earned this night. It's your night.

We've got some great surprises up our sleeve, so let's get started.

My first guest have the best credit scores in Westeros,

'cause they always pay their debts,

the formidable House Lannister, ladies and gentlemen.

Do you know what "legacy" means? It's what you pass down to your children.

Not your personal glory, not your honor...

it's the family name that lives on.

I would do things for my family you couldn't imagine.

We fight and die or we submit and die. I know my choice.

Shame!

Do you know what they call me?

Kingslayer, oath breaker, man without honor.

No matter what you do, you're forsaking one vow or another.

I understand the way this game is played.

Every time we deal with an enemy, we create two more.

Any fool with a bit of luck can find himself born into power.

But earning if for yourself, that takes work.

I believe men of talent have a part to play in the war to come.

A toast! To the proud Lannister children.

The dwarf.

The cripple.

And the mother of madness.

Please welcome Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Peter Dinklage,

Lena Headey and Conleth Hill!

Nice to have you all here. Welcome. Peter!

You and I had dinner, the night before last, here in Belfast...

- Alone... - Alone. A romantic dinner.

We shared some wine, a couple of glasses of wine...

And at one point, after, I think, your fourth glass,

you claimed to have improvised every speech you've ever given.

On Game of Thrones. Off the top of your head.

Care to elaborate?

Did I say that?

I think you were joking. I'm paying you a compliment,

but I think you have one of the greatest evolutions of any character

in television history. It's amazing.

Did you know you were gonna take that journey, from the very beginning?

No, I mean I met with Dave and Dan in Los Angeles

and I said a couple of things... that I didn't want.

- Yeah... - Before I read anything.

Right. Did you lay out things that you did not want?

Yes. I didn't want a very long beard, but now I have a beard...

And I didn't want pointy shoes, so they gave them to Conleth.

- Those were your big demands. - Yeah.

- For this very important role. - Yeah. Only two.

Only. No long beard, no pointy shoes.

Yes, exactly. 'Cause I think that speaks to a lot of other things.

I only knew, then, up until the end of season 4, I think, at that time.

Or maybe a little... soon after that, of killing Tywin, my father.

And I thought from where I start to doing that...

was enough for me... to sign on.

- That's a brilliant character arch. - Yeah.

- And then it went somewhere else. - Yes.

In addition to that. So that was... even... better.

What's amazing is that you two have this incredible onscreen hatred

for one another and I'm sure it's more complex than that.

But you're arch-rivals, in so many ways...

in real life you're best friends.

Oh, best friends.

Used to be.

- Used to be? - Yes.

- Season 2. - And then we negotiate...

Wait, Season 2?! It all went South in Season 2.

It all went tits up.

It's different when you work with someone.

That goes South quick.

No...

I did something with Lena, a show that never went anywhere...

Thank God...

A was a mad professor and I had cats.

And one of the cats was in a remote-controlled car.

And it went... I just remember...

What were your demands on that?

- I don't remember... - No beard, no pointy shoes.

It's always the same demands.

Now I add "no cats in remote-controlled cars".

But there was a cat in a remote-controlled car

and I don't remember anything about the pilot, except for Lena and the cat

in the remote-controlled car.

And you were the one that told Lena "I'm reading the script".

Yeah. We were doing an indie movie in L.A... together.

And I said "This is some really mediocre material. You should read it."

- No cats. - We can improvise around it.

But there's no cats in remote-controlled cars.

Yeah, totally improvised.

It was really like free form, improvised show, yeah.

The first thing you do, Nikolaj, is you push a small boy

out of a tall 30-story window.

- Yeah. - And cripple him for life.

- Yeah. - Yet...

People root for you and like you. Explain how that's possible.

Explain how you took that journey.

It tells you about people, really. People's personality.

- I mean we've all done it. - Exactly.

I see... no, it's a mystery to me.

Why would you forgive a guy who tries to kill an innocent boy?

No, I think he tries to save his own children.

So in that way it makes sense.

You really didn't have to push him out the window.

Now... he then gets superpowers.

I mean, we wouldn't have a show without that.

- So you should thank Jaime Lannister. - Yeah.

Eight years of work for everyone here. That's...

Everyone here!

- "Shove the boy!" - "Shove the boy!"

- Conleth! - Yeah.

Help me. I have my methods, but how did you prepare to play a eunuch?

- I cut my testicles off. - You...

- You cut your testicles off. - I'm wearing them as cufflinks now.

No, I didn't have to do any method...

it's all pretty figuratively...

A eunuch anyway...

- I shaved my head. And that was it. - Really. Just shaved you head?

- And got pointy shoes. - You got the pointy shoes.

Luckily, I got pointy feet, so... they fit like a glove.

- They fit perfectly. - Yeah.

I do have to say this, compared to many of the other characters

who had to walk through hell and walk through fire...

In the show, you had it pretty easy.

- Yes. - You're always sipping wine.

You're always in a comfortable, warm location.

You always... you get so say some brilliant little speeches...

And you're always dressed

wearing like those pyjamas they give you in first class.

You have the most comfortable role. Physically comfortable.

I have also many, many naked photographs of producers.

And... So I never have to do any battle scenes.

I do all my own stunts. Pour all my own wine.

- I've noticed that. - And it's not easy.

- Roll my own eyes... - Yeah.

But... you know, we have training, we have rehearsals, but...

It's not easy. I make it look easy.

- Yes! - But it's...

Actually... I'm working with... And...

Lovely Lauren and Paul, here.

For all these years, it's been a pleasure and I've learned so much...

You should really learn their names.

Conleth, George R.R. Martin wrote you a letter about your character.

- What?! - Yep. And he said...

- What the fuck? - You could tell people...

- You didn't get a letter? - He wrote you a letter?!

Yeah!

He wrote you a letter and he said... you could tell people what it said.

- Have you guys gotten letters? - No! We didn't get letters.

What the fuck?

It was in the form of an e-mail...

which came around the time of DVDs...

Everyone here was imagining a parchment and a raven.

We didn't think... but he said you could reveal what he said,

after the show was done?

Yes.

- So you're gonna tell us what he said. - Oh, come on!

He said... "You're my favourite."

That's all it was.

So that was big. He said I was ultimately a good person.

- Ultimately a good person. - Yeah.

The Lannisters are, as you can see, a very talkative bunch.

You love to gab. Which meant learning a lot of lines.

Is this where they do the thing where I don't remember my line? Great.

That's not gonna happen. It's a much classier outfit than that.

I know my line!

- It's "Wait and see." - Yeah.

When you play the game of thrones you win or you die.

I'm going to open your lord from balls to brains,

and see what Starks are made of.

Big storms come and go, the big fish eat the little fish...

- Come, my lord! - I don't know what that means.

Nor do I.

- Line... - Line!

I know that's not what I've said... I'm sorry.

This is what ruling is. Lying on a bed of weeds,

ripping them out by the root, one by one,

before they strangle you in your sleep.

Language can be a bit tricky here.

Every last sparrow will die before...

that woman up there.

Do you remember what father used to say...

The lion does not concern himself...

with the opinions of a sheep!

I'm not entirely sure what you're suggesting.

I'm entirely sure you are entirely sure what I'm suggesting.

We spoke a little beforehand and you said that,

well, Peter admitted that he cracks up a lot when he does scenes with you.

Yes, but he just laughs at my bad acting and my... my silly acts.

- You were laughing at him, not with him. - Well, he thinks he's in a play.

Apparently, I got the reputation for being a diva on set.

And I think it's just because I'm an American. Honestly.

Where did you get that reputation?

Somebody said that to me the other night.

- Is he the diva? - They voted.

- He's the diva! - Shocking.

- Yeah! - I don't know.

- I wasn't there for the vote, but... - It was the crew that voted.

- The crew voted? - They said you're not polite.

They're British and they're lovely, and Irish and they're polite.

Right.

Oh, sorry.

It's getting better for you...

- I'm so sorry. - Come on!

I'm talking amongst... about the actors.

Let's roll la clip!

It's a clip of you saying that same thing.

We just had it put together and edited.

Fuck, get me off the stage, right now.

No!

The Starks! Ladies and gentlemen, the Starks!

This is the best part. This is the good stuff.

Nikolaj, your character... as much as he talks, he fights.

You must have... Obviously, you love the speeches, but...

You love the fighting? You love the battle scenes?

One of the things about this show is that...

Everyone is... Are the best in what they do, so you have

the stunt team, that are just insanely good,

and then you have the horse department...

And I think it's fun to do that stuff, so...

I've learnt so much over these years, so yes.

- I got booed and you got cheered. - Yeah, well...

- Think about it. - About what you did.

- Think of what you said. - I'm really a horrible person.

You really are. The worst guy I've met in a while.

- The iconic "shame" scene. - Yes!

Legendary scene, very painful to watch...

Do people...

and this would be an annoying by-product of such a famous scene...

Do people shout "shame" at you in any situation ever, just to try to be funny?

Yes. When I had my daughter, I was in hospital,

and she had jaundice so we had to put her in this bed...

And when you have your baby it takes a while

for the milk to come into your boobs

and they were helping me get the milk and the nurse said...

"No, I'll help you",

and she'd been really nice to me for days and I thought it was a bit weird.

She kept going "Can I get you anything?"

and I was like "No, it's fine".

And she was doing this and she went "Shame!"

And she went "I'm so sorry! I couldn't help myself."

And I was just like...

I'm kind of naked and with my... It was awful.

- Yes, yes. - So that's probably the worst.

- That's horrifying. That's just... - Yeah. That actually happened.

Conleth, you're from Northern Ireland.

What did this... meant for you home

the fact that the show was born here and raised here

and really the life of the show has been Northern Ireland, Belfast.

Yeah. I'm immensely proud, and...

I always knew the crews and everybody here were brilliant, and...

I remember being in New York when I was in my 20s,

I'm watching "The Sopranos" and going "I'd love to do a show for HBO."

That white noise in the beginning and the logo and everything...

But I'd have to leave my entire family, 'cause we all sleep together...

And my home and just move all the way across the world to do this.

But if you wait long enough, they'll come to you.

So nine years later they came, and...

But...

We were ten years in our peace process when we started this

and still not fighting, which is brilliant,

But also what it's done for... like a travel out for this place

and how beautiful it is...

and it just fills you with pride and it's the closest to teary I get

when I talk about it, because...

it's very arbitrary that they came here

and not Scotland, and not somewhere else, you know.

So we were just very lucky and eternally grateful.

You also have family that works on the show.

- I do. - Do you have a brother?

Yeah, but there's a few of us...

Emilia's brother bands in the camera department

and Rory's sister, Sally, is in wardrobe

and my brother is a multi award-winning sound man.

Ronan!

And I'm sure there are other siblings, as well.

We have noticed you had the best sound of any character.

That's correct. Always in sync.

We have a special guest to bring out now.

He drinked and drinked...

He drank and whored his way through Season 1,

all while enjoying a perfect marriage to Cersei.

Please welcome Robert Baratheon, Mark Addy!

How are you, man?

- Good to see you! - How are you?

What's it like to be back and seeing everybody?

It's great to be back.

Eight years! Since I've been here.

Yeah.

And seen these guys.

You know, it's... And these guys!

What an extraordinary thing.

And who knew way back then that the show was going to be

what it has become? It's... It's amazing.

Did you think, when your character was killed off...

"Good luck to them getting by without me?"

Yeah, whatever. Yes.

Did you think "This show would have just another season and that's it?"

Yeah. Probably. It's, I think... you know...

It's... I knew Robert was there for a limited time...

Right.

And until that seat becomes vacant

the game can't really begin, you know?

Yes, your death is the catalyst for everything that happens afterwards.

Kind of, yeah.

So, you know, it was a...

I knew it was a limited time for the character, but...

It was such a great character... that it was a joy to do, you know?

And you got to sit in the Iron Throne.

In the show, no. I never did.

- What?! - Other people did.

Robert never sat on the Iron Throne.

- It's really uncomfy. - Not very comfortable...

I think off-camera you all sat.

Everyone here has sat on the Iron Throne, right?

Yes! You've all sat on it!

When the lights are down, people do all kind of things on that prop.

You know they do.

- It's filthy. - Yeah. They hose it down.

Your death... Settle down! Your death was supposed to be different.

They looked at the possibility of a wild boar...

goring me or a stunt guy. But...

Turns out the clue is in the name. "Wild" is a tricky one to capture.

So it was easier to say "He's just been gored by a boar!"

Yeah, it was like something out of a high-school play.

Exactly.

They come running in and say "He got bored..."

- Gored. - Sorry, it slipped.

But, I mean, with CGI. You have dragons flying around!

Come on! They could've got a boar together!

They could have done something! They could have rigged up a robot pig!

We have someone else waiting to bring out round.

We have one more special guest for the Lannister House.

He outlasted Robert Baratheon by two episodes in Season 1,

Please welcome the head of the Stark House, Ned Stark, Mr. Sean Bean!

- Hey, man. - Good to see you! How are you?

Love you.

Has it been a long time since you've seen everybody?

Yes. Since the first season. I've seen Mark. I haven't seen you...

You guys became very close, you and Mark. You're close pals.

Yeah...

I happen to know you are friends. Isn't that true, Mr. Addy?

We knew each other. We worked together before this.

We were at drama school at around about the same time.

- Yeah. - So we were... And that helps.

When you're playing characters that have a history,

to have a little bit of history with your fellow actor is a bonus.

I think it was a signal to everybody that watched the show...

When Ned Stark dies.. that this show can and will do anything.

Because it was just inconceivable that your character would die.

When he died, there was a seismic wave, a shock.

And people thought: if they can kill him, they can kill anybody.

Do you really... What was the fan reaction to your death?

People that you'd just meet on the street?

They were upset, some of them were really upset.

And... there were some good ones on the internet.

Some good reactions. These guys in America...

Just smashing, like... Their own place up. And...

It's funny though, there are a lot of people that think

even after all these years you've been gone,

your character is still the moral centre of the show.

Yes, he is really. I think he's a good man.

You know, he was passionate and strong and...

Quite a normal guy, I suppose.

Compared to... well, the rest of them.

And I think that was a kind of...

It was a positive, and it was good to have that, because without the good...

Now I'm not saying he's perfect,

but without the good you can't have the bad.

So it's good foil for some of these characters

There are immensely enjoyable scenes.

There's a story, Mark, about you and Sean

had a lot of trouble getting through a scene...

with a horse.

There was a horse that laughed every time I did.

- Which... - I don't know what you mean.

The horse laughed every time you did.

I had to laugh in the scene when I first arrived in Winterfell...

Every time I went...

The horse would go...

So it was impossible... But that was also the scene where...

Sean had a secret pocket inside his tunic.

For necessaries. Mobile phone, cigarettes, whatever.

We used to have decent chocolate on the craft service table,

but by the time I'd come out of make-up, it'd all gone.

When he knelt down, all this chocolate fell out of his secret pocket.

I knew were it had gone...

- KitKats and Mars bars... - KitKats, all the good stuff!

Sean, HBO didn't know if you were able to make it tonight

so they thought "If he doesn't make it, we're bringing this out."

This is something that HBO wanted to reunite you with...

I don't know, I'm told...

- Oh, boy! - Deja-vu?

Thank you! Thank you, everyone!

- What do you think of it so far? - Yeah, you like it?

I look a bit younger. Seven years, like.

You think you look better as a severed head than you do in person.

What shall I do with it?

You should sell it on eBay. That's what you could do.

You'd make quite a pretty penny for that.

Yeah... thanks for that.

There are...

- Thanks for that! - You're all right, Sean?

All right, we're gonna move on to the Starks.

We wanna thank these people for being here.

Sean, stay up with us, because we want you to reunite with your children.

As you'll see how Stark has been very busy in your absence.

Winter is coming.

We must protect ourselves.

Stop!

Look after one another.

Come on!

We can't fight a war amongst ourselves.

The world is built by killers.

So you better get used to looking at them.

If I'm going to die...

Let it happen while there's still some of me left.

I was never going to be as good a lady as you.

So I had to be something else.

Valar morghulis.

I remember what it felt like to be Brandon Stark.

But I remember so much else now.

I'm tired of reading about the achievements of better men.

This isn't someone else's war.

Go! Go!

It's our war.

My name is Jon Snow.

Ned Stark's son.

I am not your enemy.

The dead are the enemy.

Please welcome Kit Harington, Maisie Williams, Sophie Turner,

Isaac Hempstead Wright!

How are you?

- Hello! - How are you?

Sean, this is something that everybody wants to see:

you back with your... with your family.

Good, it feels good.

Is it... have you kept in touch with anybody here.

Or are you just... This is the first time?

- No. - Not really...

Thanks.

- We did a movie together. - Yeah.

No way... "We did a movie together."

- Where was it? Canada. - Canada.

Shit!

Sean, are you aware that Maisie and Sophie do impressions

of you as Ned Stark? Are you aware of that?

- They never get back to you? - No.

I think the crew are probably sick of hearing us.

- Yeah. - No...

The people watching this DVD, and God bless them...

I think they're gonna want to see this.

Can we see? Can you show us? Can you sample?

Well, it's just like... We just talk like this all time, don't we?

Whenever we're on the set... "Can we all talk like that?"

"Talk like that! Jon Snow?"

You said nice. Oh, yeah.

Maisie, was this awkward

watching Game of Thrones the first time with your family?

You said it was awkward. Why?

Well, the first series was really very raunchy,

and my family was so proud of me and it was really lovely

and they would come over every Monday night

and sit down and watch the show.

But the themes of the show are very embarrassing to watch

with your auntie and your uncle and your nan, and your mom, and...

your neighbour and everyone in the room.

It was really embarrassing.

My mom would keep filling up my nan's glass with gin, more and more gin

as it got raunchier and raunchier and she is saying that...

Very embarrassing, but... yeah.

I feel like it tamed down a little bit now.

- The show's not quite so... - Yeah! Less penises, less tits.

It's nice. It's much nicer.

Less penises, less tits. Yeah.

That's almost what HBO wants to use for the next tagline.

One of the innate things about Game of Thrones

it that we've watched all of you, these performers here

grow as actors and also just grow.

- We actually have some pretty... - I didn't.

You did fine. Pretty adorable footage. Take a look.

Oh, God...

Game of Thrones has been such an education for me in everything.

I've become an adult on this show.

More than everything, the friends I've made on the show I will have for life.

Coming... And... Action!

My gosh! I am in mediaeval times! I'm not in 2009 anymore!

I've never done anything like this before.

It's my first ever filming of anything.

I love getting in costume, walking about in a massive cloak and sword.

That's been the most fun: just pretending to be in this world.

Can't wait to see what more would be like.

Getting one donut. Take one!

Me and Maisie are best friends on set.

We met in the auditions.

I'm not supposed to leave the column anymore. Father said so.

Father said so.

We get on really well in real life.

I think we're gonna be friends for a long time.

The most fun I had was working with Sophie.

She's my best friend.

I mean like, who else gets to go to work with their best friend.

My favourite day on set...

would be the day that I was reunited with Maisie...

and we could keep it together.

This has been not only a family to me,

but I've grown up with these people.

I changed so much as a person.

Game of Thrones means my 20s. It's a decade of my life.

Keep doing what you're doing! Straight, long and up!

It's going to be brilliant. Doing this all the time.

Not knowing when this is gonna end.

That we would come back and we'll do it again.

So embarrassing...

- What are you doing to us? - That was adorable!

It was horrible!

That was lovely! What are you talking about?

Kit! First of all, I mean... Had you...

- You've aged decades... - Yeah, it's incredible!

I don't think you could grow a beard, then, could you?

I think if I shave my beard off

I'm just gonna look like a disturbed child.

I still have a baby face, with massive bags under my eyes.

That's what this show has done to me.

This was... Kit, this was really your first time...

- Doing anything! - First time, yeah.

Yeah! It's my first scene I ever had on camera was with Peter, in the pilot.

I came a year out of drama school into this show.

I did one job before, which is a play.

And then came into Game of Thrones, which is sort of...

You can't... it's incredible. As a first job.

What's interesting is that we have... As you said, we have...

- We have other auditions footage. - Please no.

We don't have it! We don't have your audition footage.

I'm told that you showed up in a kind of rough shape. Is that true?

- Yeah. - You wanna talk about that?

- Continue that theme through... - Nothing's changed.

- No... Yeah, I had a black eye. - You had a black eye to an audition?

I got in a fight at McDonald's.

Do you remember what the fight was about in McDonald's?

This guy was like being a real prick to this girl that I was with.

We went and shared a table and he started calling...

For no reason he started calling her a pig

and like started going "she's fucking ugly" and all this stuff

and I was like "You can't say that."

I got up and said "Right... Get up and come on."

Have it at McDonalds.

- Like last night? - Yeah. Like last night.

No... a story for another time.

But... he'd been sitting down the whole time

and when he got up he was like six foot five.

And I swung for him and completely missed.

And he, like, cluttered me.

But I think... the black eye made me stand out in the audition.

- You owe that man. - Yeah. Yeah!

- That man saved you. - Yeah. Pretty much.

- I many ways. - Yeah.

And he's here tonight. Ladies and gentlemen...

That'd be great if we could bring him out.

But that's not gonna happen.

It's amazing the way you two, and you can see it,

you bonded instantly, as friends, and here we are...

Nine years later and you're still besties.

Yes. Still besties. We met at an audition and we like...

we high-fived each other and gone on with it.

Kept high-giving after every take. "You nailed it, babe!"

They're a nightmare on set, by the way.

Yeah, we are, yeah.

What are they like on set?

- We're just loud. Really loud. - They just don't shut up.

- Loud and obnoxious. - Obnoxious. Annoying.

At least not hungover, there, 'ay Kit...

Good one.

Isaac... I mean you were so young. And you look at that footage.

It's a home movie you're looking at, essentially.

- But there's a difference. - Like a weird, expensive one...

- Medieval home movie. - An expensive medieval home movie.

With more incest.

Do you... I mean, when you start out that young on a show like this,

the show becomes a massive part of your life.

It's become a massive part of everyone's life, but...

this is a major part of your... childhood.

- Isn't it half of your life? - Pretty much. Like... nine years.

I'm 19, so that's pretty much 50 percent.

- That is crazy. - Ever...

Yeah. Do you remember that first day?

Yeah. I just remember it raining, like... all day.

And coming back and saying: "I don't think I can do this."

"This is not what I've signed up for".

Calls up his agent, he's like: "Hey, I'm out, man".

"This thing's going nowhere. Get me off. I wanna be on "Alf".

Look it up.

Kit, in the package you're this kid, and you're saying

that you love wearing the cloak and having a sword,

and that's your favourite thing.

That's not true, all these years later, is it?

- It's really not. - Why?

I hate the cloak.

I like the sword. The sword's all right.

The cloak's just like... The trouble about the cloak is that

when you're in the scene and there's context

you feel relatively like cool.

But the minute you step off and you're in a cloak,

you feel like such a dick! Like if they take you out of context

you're just an idiot wearing a furry cloak. Do you know what I mean?

No, I wear a cloak in my private life.

All around Los Angeles. I think it looks fantastic.

It... yeah. I won't say that.

You won't say what?

No, I'm not gonna.

DVD extra!

If you fall, it traps it.

Now we're getting somewhere.

Now we're getting there.

It's true though, isn't it?

Kit! Your character dies, and everyone thinks you're gone.

Were you able to tell anybody here what the real deal was?

Yeah, I told these two. But Sophie wrote me a letter.

You didn't tell Sophie.

No, she wrote me a really heartfelt letter saying

"I'm so sorry that you're leaving the show, I loved working with you..."

- So I just like said "thank you", and... - You just carried on.

- Yeah. I didn't tell you. - You didn't tell me.

Do you feel betrayed. You wrote that beautiful letter... He told...

Yeah, 'cause I would never say that to him normally.

It was a once in a lifetime thing.

It's the only time you've been nice to me.

He made a big hoo-hah on the "last day ever".

- I had to give a speech! - He gave a speech, he was crying...

It was terrible.

I came on set to go say good-bye and he walks out,

he's got tears streaming down his face, doesn't wanna talk anymore...

You're the greatest actor...

- You're the greatest actor I ever met! - I save it for off-camera.

You noticed your friends saying:

"Too bad, you're probably gonna get a new job,"

and you're like: "I think I'm gonna be all right."

"I'm fine."

Well, it's time for another surprise guest.

We we lucky to get him because he lives only two blocks away...

Kristian Nairn! Let's get him out here!

Hello!

Good to see you again.

- Hello! - Hi! How are you?

Kristian, your iconic character, amazing character,

has one line that he says over and over again,

which can be a blessing and a curse.

As you can probably tell us all...

In your real life how much... people yell "Hodor" do you get.

It doesn't happen that often. I've definitely been...

at the supermarket at 3 a.m. and I'll hear it from like from four aisles away,

someone shouting "Hodor" from the frozen produce.

So... it definitely happens.

You literally carried Isaac...

For six seasons.

And I thought about this before...

He got bigger and bigger and bigger.

Yeah.

And it's something that anyone watching the show would think about.

Which is he starts up as a little child, you're a big guy,

and he... what, triples in weight, size,

in the time that you have to carry him?

Did you dread seeing him go through this growth spurt?

'Cause you literally had to carry him.

I did dread it. I had many conversations

with your sainted mother Helen,

asking her if she could just not feed you.

He looks like a drink of water. He's not a drink of water,

I'm telling you right now he's really heavy.

I don't really know why, 'cause you're not really...

I just put on a little vest with extra weight

whenever I knew you would carry me.

Thank you. You would do that.

Kristian has literally had put up with my shit for like... eight years.

Yeah, you wouldn't believe it, actually.

Singing Sponge Bob songs in your ear.

That's how it all started. He'd be on my back and he'd be singing

repeatedly and solely to annoy me Sponge Bob songs.

Your death on Game of Thrones is one of the saddest

I think I've seen on television and, as I said, that is no small feat.

Can you explain what was going on? What went into making that?

- I mean... I guess it took two weeks? - Yeah.

Yeah, two weeks, in various different locations,

I think there were about seven different doors,

you know... there was a stunt door, they had different types of wood.

You wouldn't believe how many doors we destroyed.

And there was an entire cave set built in our studio.

It was such an incredible scene to be part of.

And... there was one part where I think eight or nine people

trying to stop me getting through the door.

At one stage the entire set was moving. When I was ramming into the door.

That's just how I roll.

And that was very emotional for you, too, Isaac, right?

No, I was asleep for most of it.

Because I'd done all my bits in the "vision" part,

so I got all that out of the way.

And then I was just lying, warging, in the little sled.

For about two weeks. So...

What an emotional story!

No, it was...

This would not be a proper reunion of House Stark

if we didn't include a few eccentric family friends.

Please welcome Liam Cunningham, John Bradley, Rory McCann!

Hi, Conan!

- Here you go, chief! - Liam...

- Hello! - Look who's here!

- I'm here! - There you are!

I'm in the back row.

Gentlemen... Welcome! We have so much to talk about here.

John, first of all, Game of Thrones...

Not a comedy, but Sam brings so much levity to the show.

Is that something that... Did they pick you because you have this great...

You got great comedy in your eyes. Great comic timing.

That is very kind.

I think it has definitely evolved over the course of the series.

And I think it's a huge testament to Dave and Dan's sensitivity

as writers and people to collaborate with.

The fact that they can look at an actor, at the initial stage

and start to tailor their script to their kind of sets of skills.

For example, we were... I don't know if...

It was in my first episode, episode four,

and I don't know if the episode was running slightly short or something,

but a couple of weeks into shooting we got a scene, me and Kit.

It's a scene where we're talking about girls,

and the scene where they established that Jon's a virgin

and Sam wasn't having any of it, and they were scrubbing tables...

And you could see, in the course of those two weeks,

they kind got a measure of our blossoming relationship.

And... decided there was a kind of comic energy between me and Kit

that they could harness for Sam and Jon.

And once that starts to come through,

you realise you're working with people who...

They're not only very good at writing,

but they're very good at getting the measure of people.

You said there were some challenges to doing these scenes with Kit.

You love Kit, but there are some challenges there.

Just about...

There are some challenges to working with Kit, yes.

- Please elaborate. - Welcome challenges.

The main challenge, if I'm gonna go down the safe route here...

The main challenge in working with Kit as far as I'm concerned is...

I think he ruined all the professional relationships for me in the future.

The fact that the professional relationship

that I enjoyed the most, I got the most satisfaction from,

and the one that I felt it made me improve as an actor as well

it just happened to be my first one.

And I realize, as I go forward, how extraordinarily lucky I've been.

I'll probably never work with anybody that closely again

I'll have that relationship with.

Having said that...

I wouldn't mind working with some ugly people.

Oh, please, God!

Please, God! That's my dream.

But it's been... I start to realize now that we've been very lucky.

We were lucky to work with a close friend for... eight years.

- How rare that is in this game. - Rory...

I want to talk to you about The Hound. It's such a fantastic character.

He has such an interesting, complicated, fun relationship

with Arya.

- Yeah. - You think of her almost as...

You think that Arya's your character's moral compass, a little bit?

No, I think The Hound's got his own fucking moral compass.

He's got his own code.

And I think Arya has annoyed him for a few seasons,

and then, eventually, he gets a bit of respect,

sees that she's a survivor.

They go on a good road trip

and they find a bit of peace through that, and... still here.

It's a great evolution to watch.

When I first started,

I really was that spear carrier behind my king

and... or looking after Joffrey.

I had no idea that it was gonna be such a story with this character.

I remember, I mean I did have a big speech in the first...

the first CD's and they actually cut it

said they're gonna bring it in gently, and they did.

It was years later, but it just got... more and more.

Which was great.

Maisie, you and Rory became good friends. In real life.

Yeah, we absolutely did. Season 4 was the funny one.

Because Rory... there was this scene where Rory got bitten

and Arya offers to burn away the rotting flesh, to make him better.

And it said in the script that Rory... that The Hound was topless.

So Rory had been on this crazy diet, he'd quit drinking,

anyone that knows Rory knows that's a big deal.

I was even grumpier than usual.

He was just... Honestly, he was just grumpy.

'cause he was eating just boiled eggs and chicken.

The funniest and best thing about it

is that when we came to shoot that scene,

they looked at the weather and said: "You know what, it's been cold".

"It doesn't make sense to have your shirt off".

"So maybe you could just leave it on".

And I've never been to the gym since.

And that's the truth. That was years ago, as well.

- It was the best he ever looked. - Fuck you, that's it.

I think he actually cracked open a beer on set, which was just hilarious.

I did. I'll never stop drinking.

And that night I saw you drinking a pint of gin and tonic.

Yeah, it was great...

Liam, when you were first approached

you weren't excited about the "Game of Thrones" project, initially. Why?

What was it about the project that gave you pause?

My agent rung me and said "I have this script"

"with dragons and shadow babies" and I said "Let me stop you there."

So I said "Look, just hang up. We'll have a conversation..."

She said "Wait a minute". And said: "It's HBO."

So I went "Oh? Okay."

And then they sent the script over and the script was anything but

about dragons and this. It's a very, very expensive backdrop

to an incredible story, as we know, of power and legacy

and family and paranoia and all those wonderful things.

Actually, at the meeting I had with the boys they said

"You don't do series." I said... "No, I get bored easily".

They said "Why are you interested in this?"

I said "HBO, the script..."

"It's an hour and a half from my front door!"

So I didn't have to uproot my family, I didn't have to do any of that

and the script, as we now, is just gold.

So it wasn't a difficult decision.

I want to ask you, Rory, prior to Game of Thrones...

You're living in Iceland. You were struggling, at the time.

What has this opportunity meant to you?

Two years ago I was in a tent, literally in a tent,

stealing food occasionally.

Eventually I got a job and sorted myself out,

but then suddenly I'm getting driven around in a nice car

and I'm in the biggest and best show in the world.

Just shows how your fortune can change. Amazing.

I managed to go back there and pay my old library fines.

John, no one pegged Sam as a survivor.

When the first appears in The Game of Thrones.

People are just... everyone has to be so on their toes,

they have to be... you know. Such killers.

And no one thought that you were going to... survive.

And I think that's part of the magic of your character.

That you've managed to bob and weave and somehow...

And probably make your way through the whole affair.

Yeah, and I think that's...

That's a testament to one of the great lessons that's learned

through watching Game of Thrones.

Sam is such a figurehead of this lesson:

that there's not just one set of skills that's needed to survive.

On the outside, it looks like

you need a lot of physical prowess to survive.

You need to be a warrior. To be able to handle yourself in a battlefield.

And I think that Sam's a great lesson to people.

Not only in the show, but also watching the show.

There are any number of sets of skills that can get yourself through life.

You shouldn't look at other people and say

"If I was like them, I'd survive,"

And the fact that he's made it to the end of the series

just goes to show that if you have a belief in yourself,

and you have an iron will

to apply what you love and what you're good at,

then you can get kind of anywhere, really.

And I think that it's...

It's an important lesson to learn in life.

That you do have sets of skills.

Even if you don't see the importance of them yourself.

Other people do. Before I went into this show,

there were a lot of things I didn't like about myself.

You know, there's a lot of things I used to go to bed and think:

I wish I could wake up tomorrow and things about me would be different.

And all that time I was thinking that, those two guys...

they were looking for exactly me.

They were looking for an actor who knows what it's like

to be bullied because of his weight.

And were looking for an actor who knows what it's like to be painfully shy

and have grave doubts about yourself.

And the stuff that they were looking for

not only did they see worth in me, when I couldn't see it myself,

but they saw what I considered to be my failures as virtues.

And I think that in Sam's journey throughout this whole thing as well,

he's learned... it's not about what he learned about himself,

it's about his own learn.

There's a very valuable call within him and...

This narrative of the show told him that.

And they had faith in me and told me what's good about myself

and I figure that's a parallel that's not lost on me.

You just mentioned Dan and David and said something incredibly sweet.

Liam, you said before that you consider Dan and David sadists.

Yes!

And I haven't changed my opinion.

The used to do terrible things to the actors

whose lives they were there about to ruin.

They bring them over a nice dinner

you know, get them all relaxed and then tell them they were sacked.

So they did it in a number of occasions.

I refused to go to dinner with them for a long time.

Yeah, if you ever had a cast made of your head...

That was... And you phone your agent: "I think I'm getting the chop."

Yeah, I know that.

Unfortunately, we have to move on.

Please, you guys go back to your tables,

continue drinking heavily on HBO's dime...

All I have to say about my next guests is they have dragons.
