I've come at last, Yoshioka.

THE BLOOD OF THE DO RE MI FA GIRL ROARS

December 12th - the Voting Day

Hey! A freshman? Which department?

Don't you want me to take a nude photo of you, in memory of your entrance?

Music Circle, Veracruz.

Veracruz

Freshmen this way. Stage of One Thousand.

It's here. I've come at last, Yoshioka.

I panicked.

Who are you?

Yoshioka isn't there?

No, he isn't.

Will he come here, if I wait for him?

Will who come?

Minoru Yoshioka.

- Who's he? - Er...

Where do the seminars of Professor Hirayama,

of the Psychology Department, take place?

This is only between us.

We are already tired of living on our own terms.

Now we're aware of that at last.

It took us 20years to finally figure that out.

But it's not too late for us.

We're thinking of making every effort to reconstruct a story that was broken by someone.

That means dreaming of living in a perfect story.

And, another necessary thing is ''to search''.

''Romance instead of sex''

Hi! Are you a freshman?

- No. - Then a senior?

I'm not a student of this university.

I see...

- Are you surprised? - No, not at all.

I've come here looking for this man: Yoshioka.

- Where are you from? - From the countryside.

- Are you surprised? - No, not at all.

Is he your lover? The man you gave your virginity to?

University students are like that?

They always do such things?

You're going to the Psychology Department? I'll come too.

- Do you attend Hirayama's seminars? - I haven't made my mind up yet...

- OK. I'll go there. - Take me there, please!

- All the students are present. - All right.

- We're busy. - I become angry when I see a selfish man.

- Yoshioka isn't like that? - Of course not.

All the university students in Tokyo are shameless, aren't they?

New Liberal Psychology The more you know, the more you become ashamed.

They've already started.

Is that man in there?

Is he there?

How about going in?

- Now...? - Let's enter!

- What's the matter? - I'm a newcomer to the Psychology Department.

OK.

- No, I'm not... - OK.

You're newcomers. Welcome.

Please.

Yoshioka is here?

- Yoshioka? - Yes, Minoru Yoshioka. Do you know him?

He was present only a few times at first; since then he's been absent.

- I've heard he belonged to a music circle. - He's been absent from that, too.

- I've heard he played in a live venue. - That's a lie.

- That professor is charming. - Eh?

I like him.

- I saw his live performance. - Liar!

- I saw it! - Absurd. That's a lie.

- Why did you lie like that? - No matter. It's my own business.

- I really saw it. - You mistook him for another.

- No. It absolutely was Yoshioka. - All right. It was Yoshioka.

The eyes didn't see, but the mind was watching, certainly.

What on earth is the truth?

Yes. That is a serious problem in psychology.

I'm confused!

Yoshioka won't come here any more.

So where should I go? For I love Yoshioka...

I'll marry him. That's why I've left my home.

I liked that seminar... though it was unfortunate that Yoshioka wasn't there.

- Now I'll go. - You'll go where?

You may have no place to go. Come to our dormitory!

- No, thank you. - Relax! Let's go.

- No, thank you. - You're stubborn.

- Why? - For what reason?

If I'm asked 'why', I cannot help answering 'without any reason'.

- Why? - You said it.

I'd like to propose something...

How about not asking 'why' from now on?

If one continues to ask 'why', one can get only endless answers in return.

I think we shall become exhausted at last, and reach the limits of our time.

By 'exhausted', do you mean having reached the limits of one's intelligence?

No. No. It doesn't mean the limits of intelligence, but those of asking 'why'.

But why? Whilst he lives, a human being continues to think, until he dies.

As I said, I'm proposing to stop asking 'why'. Isn't that right?

Yet it's normal for students to ask 'why' of a professor.

No. It isn't normal at all.

It's good that students ask 'what is this?' of a professor.

Ask me for a name. I'm willing to answer, because I know plenty of names.

- We don't want to ask for names especially. - Why?... But I mustn't say that!

As for 'why', one must think by oneself.

- So far as one thinks by oneself, is it OK? - No!

No. It's not good to think by oneself.

Why?

But really... I don't know why... Only music always moves us. Always.

- It's strange, I don't know why... - You're right.

There are many interesting things, but only music can really move us.

- Why? - Those are 'absolute notes', aren't they?

That is to say, there aren't 'absolute words', but music has 'absolute notes'.

'Do'. This is the absolute note of'Do'.

'Do'

'Re'

'Mi'

'Fa'

'So'

What I really want to talk about is

simply

about chairs,

a table,

a cup,

mountains, forests,

the sea, my friends,

and the man I love.

No one thinks of talking about the

relationship between chairs and a table,

nor that between forests and the sea,

no more than that between him and me.

By the way,

music doesn't ever consist of the relationship

between 'Do' and 'Re', nor that of'Mi' and 'Fa'.

There are simply several sounds there, it seems.

Even if everything is forbidden,

or forgotten,

only music will survive.

I believe that only music will always be able to triumph,

over any trap contained within a relationship.

We hide certain parts of our own bodies, because we feel them shameful.

Which parts one feels shameful depends on one's own culture.

There is no general principle at work there.

I can say that shame is cultural nonsense.

For example, when we feel a part shameful, we cover it with a piece of cloth.

Even if we do so, shame doesn't disappear so easily.

Certainly it's true that we can conceal that part from others' eyes,

but at the same time that lets them know which part we're ashamed of.

That is to say that hiding something only results in making clear the ashamed-of part.

It seems to me that this is even more shameful.

Therefore... How to say...

In order to conquer this new shame caused by covering up,

people in the future might stop hiding themselves,

in other words, people might live naked.

Because if stark naked, we cannot tell from the outside which part one is ashamed of.

Such a time might happen to come about.

In conclusion, I'd like to say that shame is much...

more powerful than a piece of cloth, and has priority.

- What are you doing? - Nothing especially.

Are you a student of this university?

Yes, I am...

- Are you an ally... or an enemy? - I'm an ally.

- What are you doing? - A pirouette exercise.

Yoshioka has formed a band.

He plays fairly well for a high-schooler, doesn't he?

You'd better forget old songs.

University is an odd place.

It always looks like a festival...

Rather like an amusement park.

Or perhaps a battlefield?

How about flowers?

How about flowers of the cosmos, which will make you encounter your beloved?

- Please give me those. - All right. They cost five hundred yen.

Here you go.

Thank you.

Nice flowers. I present these to you.

No, thank you. I already have many like these.

I bought these flowers to give to you.

Consider them as me and cherish them, please!

You're a freshman? This is my present to you.

- As a memory of your entrance. - Thank you.

Bye.

- Have you played music before? - A long time ago.

I could have belonged to this club...

but that matters little.

- Do you happen to be Aki? - Yes, I am.

I'm Teruoka. I was in the same year as you at the high school.

Ah! Teruoka! But why are you here?

Actually, I've sat the entrance examination here.

I'm surprised.

I didn't want to stay in the country. I was eager to go to Tokyo.

But if one says that in the countryside, one becomes ashamed. That's why...

But rather than me, Aki, why are you here?

Me? Because of a personal matter...

But I didn't think that you thought about such things back then.

- So? - You've changed so much!

You look completely like a city man: Your hat, your clothes and your shoes.

But first of all, this hand! This is the hand of a city dweller.

- You've been able to change up to this point! - I've changed so much?

You've really changed. I must admire you!

If so, how about coming to a cafรฉ with me?

- No, thanks. - Well, I don't need to go there either...

- Please do go, Teruoka. - I'd better go there?

- Yes. Don't worry about me! - So... I'm off.

Are you really Teruoka?

Are you really Teruoka?

Listen to this record. This is a very good one.

No, thank you.

- How about some caramels? - No. No, thank you.

All right. I'll be on that bench over there. If you're free, come over.

- Bye. - I'm sorry.

Don't you want to be naked?

What? Why?

Yoshioka, I hope that you will be here today.

You're Aki, aren't you?

This man is Yoshioka?

Yoshioka, how are you?

Aki, I haven't seen you for so long.

You've entered this university?

She's serious.

I wonder where we were...

All right. If we go beyond an experience of 'localised shame',

it seems that our body, being incapable of delivering its energy,

is forced to undergo a sort of physical stiffness.

For example, a certain change occurs in the body, or such like?

Or hair goes totally white?

Though we haven't yet observed these phenomena directly, comma,

we have certain grounds to suggest we shouldn't't deny their existence theoretically, period.

For the time being, comma, we call these physical changes, open bracket,

extreme shame mutation, close bracket, period.

It's possible that hair goes completely white.

- The extreme shame is... - That of the index ten, isn't it?

Myself, I've never experienced such shame.

- Maybe we ought to experiment? - No. We aren't yet at that point.

- I don't mind being a guinea-pig. - I thank you for your eagerness, yet...

I'm tired. Excuse me. Let me sleep for a while.

A shame...

How wonderful it would be if I could humiliate a young girl, and be humiliated by her!

I've slept.

Did I talk about anything?

- I didn't notice. - Really?

- Doesn't the seminar take place today? - No. We're collecting material.

I didn't expect that.

- Isn't the other girl with you? - I'm alone.

This book is available at the store?

Yes. But I'll give it to you.

The Professor has copies in stock, doesn't he?

We still have many. Please.

Please give her this book.

- But she isn't a student of this university. - That's not important!

''I wonder why you're angry?''

''Because we've met here again?''

I'll be back soon.

''The university is full of blossom,

with love, delight and organs.

The university is full of blossom,

in a word: a battlefield.

The university is...

full of blossom,

a city where a student should put an end to his psychosocial moratorium.

The university is full of blossom,

in a word: an emotion.''

Yoshioka wasn't that type of man.

''I'm always myself, everywhere I go.

Dreams are dreams, always, everywhere.

Everything always, everywhere.''

I dislike you... dislike... dislike...

I dislike you!

I hate you!

''How wonderful the romance between the two!

Discreet, gentle, admirable love!

The strong chest of that attractive man:

you don't touch it, nor approach it.''

''Without being embraced by the beloved man,

you're a blossom which is to fall on a late spring day.''

Goodbye.

'To not chase anyone who leaves', that is my policy.

- Could you read this book? - But I'm going home.

Before you return, read this book and let me know your impressions, please.

New Liberal Psychology by Enkichi Hirayama

Hi!

- How are you? It's been awhile. - Hi!

I'll be a failed student?

- I've heard that you've played music before? - Yes.

''Dense roses, smiling and swinging,

invite me, who is looking for love.

Now let's sing an old song to send you,

thinking of kisses on your lips,

on an evening of a crescent moon, of stars far away,

in the city of Avalon, in sweet scents.''

Everyone arrives at a point when one's mind is full of problems about men and women.

I was happy when I intruded without reflection, from country to city,

from the outside to the inside of the university,

looking for an adventure leading to love.

I thought that I could find any kind of questions and answers there.

In a corner of the refectory, in a room of the club,

on the grass on campus, in corridors, in staircases,

there are human beings, here and there.

When I glance at them, they start talking,

talking about themselves, without exception.

Yet they are far beyond my imagination, as I'm a countrywoman.

Because they talk in grammar incomprehensible to a woman,

I cannot know in which direction I should start walking.

I've met Professor Hirayama. We stared at each other.

I don't know what happened, but there was a crucial turning point.

What I wished for wasn't an adventure leading to love...

but perhaps love leading to an adventure.

Not love for love's sake, but love for adventure's sake.

It seems that the time when it was good for a woman to simply be a woman has ended.

That means that she should never put on an attractive expression,

never wander around walking in a manner as if she'd grown up here,

and chatter delightfully with people.

That would mean that she would become one of the majority, the people in good health,

that is to say, become a man.

I don't think of ceasing to be a woman.

I have a strategy...

that is, to reveal that this university

this place at large, has been a woman.

Of course, don't consider me a woman crying over an impossible love!

In a place where all those other than men are called women,

do you have the self-assurance to survive, Yoshioka?

Following faithfully a line drawn by you,

I'm not going to be contained by any frame.

Nobody will be able to tolerate us.

I'll start acting in such away...

as to have an influence on everybody.

It will be easy. I'm not a woman who hides herself and hesitates.

I'm a woman who laughs... but not the loud laughter of men.

It should be perfect if only I have the best smile.

What do you think of this, Yoshioka?

Can you resolve the enigma of this smile?

No! Set me free!

- We won't find out? - No, because Hirayama won't come today.

- Experiments are interesting? - Of course!

We'll succeed?

Don't worry. With you, surely we'll succeed.

Do you think so?

I haven't seen you for a long time.

- Hi! - Hi!

- Hi! - Hi!

I haven't seen you for ages. By the way, what's the matter?

I wanted to see Hirayama.

- Hi! - Hi!

- He's not feeling well. He says he can't come. - Oh? That's unlucky.

We'll do a psychological test. Do you want to see it?

- No, thanks. I'm going. - They say it's interesting.

- Stay with us! - Yeah? All right. I'll stay.

Now we'll start an experiment concerning shame.

We'll borrow your tough body and mind.

We're sure to obtain a good result.

- Let's start! - OK.

Oh, Aki. What? What's wrong?

What's wrong? Are you all right?

Do you want a cup of coffee?

You'd prefer tea? Coffee is OK, perhaps?

What?

Wasn't it difficult for you to find my room?

Are you all right? What's wrong?

What? What's wrong?

What? Was I crying?

It looks like you were crying.

It's strange; I have nothing to cry about.

Do you like to listen to Brahms?

Brahms? Don't you have any other records?

- Like what? - Beethoven, for example.

Beethoven? He's in the third class...

- How about Mozart? - He's at the bottom of the middle class.

- Saint-Saรซns? - Saint-Saรซns?

- Let's listen to Brahms. - No, thank you. I don't want to.

Teruoka, do you know what sort of thing they do in the Psychology Department?

The Psychology Department is the place where they study psychology.

In a word, it isn't philosophy, nor a science.

Suspended between the two, it wants to become a thought, but it cannot.

It's a vague subject like that.

Do you know Professor Hirayama, of the Psychology Department?

No, I've never heard of him. Who is he?

- You belong to the same university? - University is that sort of place.

The inexperienced students failed the experiment.

They couldn't prove the hypothesis of Hirayama concerning 'extreme shame mutation'.

The woman guinea-pig, in a position of extreme shame,

instead of undergoing the phenomenon of physical stiffness,

experienced rather the utmost pleasure.

The wave of pleasure that spread from her enveloped the students, one after another.

The wave of pleasures wept over everybody, without exception.

It doesn't distinguish between anything,

sweeping over the mind, as well as the body,

over the men as well as the women.

In the wave, the contours of things become clearer to the eyes.

One can understand everything instantly.

Everybody understood at once and simultaneously.

Professor, are you alright?

Excuse me for coming in without permission.

Since you slept well...

- A cup of water? - Yes.

Professor, I'm thinking of attending your seminar.

- Yes? That's good. - But I'm actually not a student here.

That doesn't matter.

Many things are so complicated, that I don't know what to do.

Now let's go to the classroom. They may be waiting.

- But you're ill, aren't you? - No. I don't know why, but I'm fine now.

- Where are you from? - From the countryside.

University is a good place, though there are many problems.

Yes.

How are you?

They're waiting inside.

Has there ever been a more shameful sight than this?

This is exactly what I foresaw.

Right from the start, they haven't had the capacity to understand shame.

It's only you who can understand real shame.

Mr. Hirayama, you've made a funny toy.

I'll attend your seminar from next week on.

I'll never be absent. So, please give me a credit.

Do as you please!

- Aki, I'm sorry about last time. - Don't bother her any more.

After you, please.

Mr. Hirayama! That girl isn't a virgin.

- You're a dreadful man! - Yes? You think so?

You're right.

I'm sorry.

I'm shameless.

I can do nothing that might help.

I'm the same as those students.

Only you can know genuine shame.

This way, I will also be able to know true shame.

That is to say: to love, and to be loved.

To love each other. I can do that.

''In the blue sky, the sun shines.

- A wagtail of Melaka is singing...'' - No. That's different.

- ''In the blue sky...'' - No. 'In' at the start is different.

Pronounce it.

This note.

''In the blue sky, the sun shines.

A wagtail of Melaka is singing...''

No. That's still different.

- I wonder where... - Where?

Your mind is elsewhere, though your gestures are excellent.

If you have time to think of gestures, you must sing more earnestly.

My mind reaches my fingers, as far as the tips of my nails.

No it doesn't. Only you think that it does.

- I'm sorry. - Let's try once more.

- OK. - This time it will be OK.

OK.

''In the blue sky, the sun shines, oh, oh...''

You've made a mistake. Don't be afraid!

Let's do it from the start again. This is the best part, isn't it?

- You need to be enthusiastic! Start. - Sorry.

''In the blue sky, the sun shines. A wagtail of Melaka is singing a song.

I will sing that tender song from heart, for the sake of that memory.

Girls living in a tropical country have light hearts...

and call to the seashore with this voice, oh, oh...''

- Are you serious? From the start again! - All right.

What's the matter?

You don't want to try again?

Now start!

''In the blue sky, the sun shines. A wagtail of Melaka is singing a song...''

An 'extreme shame mutation' might occur.

Anyway, something like that might occur.

Ah! Beautiful.

Ah! Superb!

What is that?

Good morning.

Oh, hi!

Where are you going?

I'm going back to the country.

How about coming with us? There's nothing important, yet it's interesting.

Kishino!

Shoko!

Everybody! Everybody!

No! No!

Junko!

Teruoka.

''Sleep! Sleep!

Around you bloom graceful flowers.

Now sleep calmly,

until you wake up tomorrow.

Sleep! Sleep!

Angels are watching over your dreams.

Sleep now, forgetting everything,

and smiling, to the country of dreams.''
