Ryleigh: A mind-blowing part
of this whole experience

is that when I was little,

I was emulating
Ariana Grande.

since I was 6 years old.

What's really cool about

I was really starting to
struggle with my mental health.

their struggles so publicly.

This is so crazy
because I grew up

singing your songs
as a little kid.

Since I was 6 or 7,

I was like,
"I am going to be a rock star."

And I didn't want to necessarily
go to college, be in debt.

I just wanted
to chase my dream.

So I started creating
my own music.

I do write all of my own songs
and I make demos at my home.

Music is my life,
and as cliche as it may sound,

it definitely was something

that helped pull me
out of the trenches.

Growing up was kind of difficult
for me.

When I was about 9,

my mom and dad
had gotten divorced.

I didn't have many friends and
struggled a lot with bullying.

I think that really set me
on a tailspin.

I just started struggling
insanely with depression,

but I would hide it
like nobody's business.

And I think it was
a defensive mechanism, you know?

If they don't know,
then maybe it's not so bad

or something silly like that.

Having experienced
depression and anxiety,

it sometimes does become hard
to believe in yourself.

But now that I have
stepped out of high school

and really allowed myself
to be who I am,

I have discovered
that this doesn't define me.

So being here
is an amazing realization

of how far I've come.

Ariana:
You brought me to tears.

I was welling up.
I felt that so deeply.

It was so beautiful,
and I could tell

that you were singing
from a really real place.

Your vibrato can
become quite wide

and it's beautiful
and it's stunning.

But there were moments
where it was a little sharp.

I think it was
probably just nerves,

but I think I would be able
to help with that.

And it was really moving.

I could tell that
that came from somewhere.

My name is Manny Keith.

I'm 31 years old
and I live in Miami, Florida.

I'm a huge Ariana Grande fan,

but I didn't know she was gonna
be a coach on this season.

So when I found that out,

I was like -- I almost cried.

I was so excited.
I just love her voice.

She makes singing
look so effortless.

Music has been, like,
a part of my household.

My dad is a musician.
My mom was a dancer.

She sang in the choir.

But I didn't start singing
until I was 14 years old.

I was a very shy kid
and very introverted,

pretty scrawny, pretty cute,
but I was very shy.

In middle school,
I joined a dance team.

You know, that wasn't
the most popular thing at school

because it was like,
"Oh, guys, they play sports,"

and I was dancing.

But my mom would encourage me,

and -- and that's when
I started singing.

It became really a passion.

My mom was one
of my biggest cheerleaders,

and I wouldn't be here today
had it not been for her.

It was during the summer
of 2012, and my dad,

he told us
that my mom was sick.

And in 2017,
she passed away from cancer.

It was one of the hardest things
I've ever experienced.

You know, it --
it took a while for me

to be able to talk about it
because it's such a tragic

and it's a heavy thing.

But I will say that
I'm so grateful

that I'm able to share my story
to help people

that may be walking through loss
as well and may not know,

you know, what hope looks like
on the other end of it.

Growing up in Texas
was extremely fun and muddy,

and I was so blessed
to have parents that raised us

in such a creative
and active household.

From dirt biking,
wakesurfing, beekeeping...

adrenaline-inducing activities

were so incredible

because they prepared me
for the stage.

The moment I knew
I wanted to be a performer,

I was 6 years old, and I
was watching my mom perform

in the musical "Guys and Dolls."

As soon as she came out
on stage, that was it.

I was mesmerized,

so I really started
to dive into theater

and discovered my love for jazz.

I attended Berklee College
of Music

to study jazz performance there

because I wanted to do
what my mom did.

My name is Libianca.

I was born in St. Paul,
Minnesota.

I moved to Cameroon with my mom
and my little brother

when I was 4 years old.

My parents are
full-blooded Cameroonians.

We took both of them
back to Cameroon

so they can grow up
and see where we grew up

and how life looks like
in Africa.

Libianca: When I first came to
Cameroon, I was so distraught.

We did not have phones,
no tablets,

and we had a TV
that was this big.

I'm not kidding you.
This big.

I got accustomed
to the lifestyle pretty quick,

to be honest.

When I was in Cameroon, I was
exposed to a whole lot of music.

The music that I used to hear

was Afrobeats,
African genres of music.

That was pretty amazing.

When I was 13 years old,
I moved to America.

It was very hard to make friends

because the ways in which
we communicate back home

is not the same as, you know,
how people communicate here.

If you call somebody fat in
Cameroon, it's a compliment.

Walk up to this girl,
I say, "Wow, you look fat."

That did not go well.

After that,
I just started to sing

I've barely got social skills,

but my voice just seemed
to attract friends.

It made me popular.

With the little means
that we had,

we decided to give everything

My name's Jared Brasher.
I'm 26 years old,

and I'm from Huntsville,
Alabama.

Baseball was always
my true love.

It's what I've done ever since
I was 4 years old.

And the dream of playing
in the Major Leagues

was always my goal.

In 2017, I was drafted by
the Washington Nationals

in the Minor Leagues.

But in 2019,
I was released.

I kind of had a reality check

trying to figure out
what I was gonna do.

After baseball was over,

it was time for me
to focus on our family.

We had a little boy in December.

Ended up doing medical sales.
That's what I do now.

It's provided for my family.
It's put food on the table.

But at the end of the day,
it's not my dream.

I always sang the entire time
that I was playing baseball,

but it was a passion of mine
that I never really considered

to be a possibility
of becoming a career.

I have never performed
in front of a live audience.

I've never been in a situation

where I felt the courage
to be able to do it,

and then this opportunity
came along.

Jared being out there

and auditioning
for "The Voice" is huge.

Most people don't get an
opportunity to chase one dream,

and now

I've been watching "The Voice"
since I was very little.

I'm a huge fan,
my entire family is,

so it's super-surreal
to be here right now,

especially seeing that
behind me.

I'm Sophia Bromberg.
I'm 16 years old.

And I'm from
San Rafael, California.

That's about 15 minutes away
from San Francisco.

So, I grew up in the Bay Area
in a very musical family.

My mom sings,
my dad tries to sing.

My dad's really into
hip-hop and R&B.

My mom introduced me to, like,

classical music
and classical piano.

I'm a senior,
and my high school

has such an amazing
music program.

I've learned so much.

That just opened up

all these opportunities
for her to perform

and be in the limelight,
showcasing her voice.

With the Internet,
social media,

there are a lot
of different struggles

that I feel like teenagers today
have to deal with.

I know how destructive
comparing yourself to others

can be for teenagers.

Me specifically, I struggled
a lot with believing in myself.

That channeled into anxiety,
anorexia, and bulimia.

Melinda: She had
an eating disorder for a while

that I didn't really
even understand

it was an eating disorder
until she was 12 years old.

We saw the weight dropping
to a point

where, "This is a problem."

We assessed the situation,
and together,

we started
the healing process.

Sophia: I had a problem,
and I needed to fix it.

There was definitely a period
of denial or anger,

and I'm very grateful
that my parents were there

to support me.

I had a lot of free time
during my recovery process,

so I did a lot of music.

It was definitely
a very cathartic experience,

and music really
helped me through it.

I'm at a stage
of my recovery now

where I feel very comfortable
talking about it,

because showing that
to the entire world,

hopefully that is inspiring
for anybody else struggling

to maybe find the courage
to just open up

to, like, a friend
or their parents,

because your loved ones
do want to help.

For her
to be here today,

showing the world what
she really is on the inside,

is the most important part
of her experience here

and being a voice
for who you are

and what you've made
of yourself.

When my brother and I
started a rock band,

I knew that I wanted
to have a career in music.

I just didn't know at the time
that it was not rock music.

Being a full-time musician
is hard enough,

but the genre that I picked
just makes it that much harder

to find gigs,
and to get this opportunity

could launch me
into the stratosphere.

in a rock band with my brother

for about
five to seven years.

We would play
these really terrible bars

with people
much more rowdy than ourselves.

It was not -- not my scene.

My mother adores Frank Sinatra

and was the one who actually
introduced me to him.

And the more I listened to jazz,
the more I fell in love with it.

And I realized that's truly
what I -- what I loved.

When you sing jazz or big band,
you have to bring the class.

So I have a growing collection
of suits.

Trying out different suits is --
I don't want to say "hobbies"

because that makes me
sound kind of weird --

but it's definitely
something I enjoy.

I do have some groupies,
but they're women over 65.

Frank Sinatra is a hero of mine.

It's funny, when he first
started out, in the '40s,

he had the nickname "The Voice."

He was the original holder
of that title.

So I would definitely love
to bring that title back

to the genre
where it started.

My name is Alexandra Stojack.

I'm 20 years old.
And I'm from Cincinnati, Ohio.

Alexandra was a child who
lived to dance and sing.

Mark: I knew Alexandra
was destined to be performing

in the way she is now
when she was in a T-shirt
and a little diaper

performing on the back stoop
of our house.

Yes.
And she hasn't stopped
since then.

I was in my junior year
of high school.

We were doing "Hairspray."

All throughout those rehearsals,

I experienced headaches.

I was in a lot of pain,

and I didn't want it
to affect me being in the show.

It took a toll on me.

I tried so hard
to push through.

She would have
a lot of pain.

We finally were put into
the headache clinic

at Cincinnati
Children's Hospital,

where they did an MRI
and found that she had
Chiari malformation.

That was a little scary.

Basically, my brain
was too big for my skull,

and it was squishing out
the back, near my spine.

I couldn't participate
in all my dance and my singing,

and it was really hard, because
the one thing that I loved

I felt like
I couldn't enjoy anymore.

Over the next six months,
along with the headaches,

I started having slurred speech,
stuttering.

My arms and legs would go tingly
and numb,

leading to me
getting brain surgery.

It was a six-hour surgery.

They took a piece of my skull
out to allow more room
for my brain.

Now that the pressure
wasn't there,

I felt there was, like,
literally a rock

had been, like,
taken out of my head.

I could finally sing again
without being in pain,

and I started songwriting.

I started experimenting more
with pop music.

And I found a new voice
that I didn't know I had before.

It felt like I can
literally do anything.

My name is Brittany Bree,
and I'm from Monroe, Louisiana,

but I currently reside
in Dallas, Texas.

I started singing in a church
when I was 5 years old.

Church is a big part of my life.
I love it. It's like a family.

We did homework in church,
we slept in church.

Everything was about church.

I've been a praise and worship
leader since I was maybe 16.

We would have
these convocations

with 600 to 700 youth members
there.

That's where I kind of got
my start on big stages,

you know, in front of a lot
of people at an early age.

But my life changed
after having two daughters.

I have Bailey and Brooklyn.

Having to provide
for you and a child,

it hits different.

Right now
what I'm doing for a living,

I work on an assembly line
picking boxes all day.

I also work as
an assistant adjuster.

To balance being a mom,

working jobs,
and also being at church 24/7,

it can be very challenging,
but I'm still dedicated,

no matter what I'm doing,
to chase my dreams.

This is definitely
a different experience for me,

singing outside of the church,
because I've never really sung

any other genre of music
besides gospel.

This is my first big break
in mainstream.

I'm actually challenging myself
to do different types of music

and create it and make it my own
and become an artist.

For my daughters to see me
