potential escape route,

Bob made a staggering
discovery.

A house on the outskirts
of Dallas

where Oswald reportedly met
with Cuban exiles

only days before
Kennedy's murder.

a sheriff's report,

Oswald has been
visiting a house

at 3128 Harlandale.

This is exactly it.

- Every piece of evidence
we've been following

has led to this.

Lee Harvey Oswald opens fire
in Dealey Plaza,

forever changing
American history.

Unanswered questions linger,

breeding countless
conspiracy theories.

Many believe Russia, Cuba,
or even the CIA

supported Oswald
in his mission.

In 2017, the final documents
from the JFK assassination

are scheduled for release.

More than 2 million files have
already been declassified.

No one has analyzed them
until now.

A CIA veteran is on the trail

of the most notorious assassin
in US history.

the president,

there's now way Oswald's
gonna get

out of Dallas without help
of somebody.

For 50 years, everybody's
focused on Dealey Plaza.

But no one's looked at what
Lee Harvey Oswald

would have done
had he gotten away.

The official investigation
concludes

that after shooting
the president...

Oswald goes back
to his boarding house,

changes his clothes,
grabs his gun...

Then leaves the boarding house

and walks west.

And then runs into
Officer Tippit.

He panics, shoots Tippit...

[gunshot]

And then runs into
the Texas Theater,

where he's quickly found

and apprehended
by the Dallas PD.

- There is Lee Oswald.

[gunshot]
Lee Oswald has been shot.

- Less than 48 hours later,

Oswald was killed
by Jack Ruby,

so police were never able
to find out

what his escape plan was.

But in his pocket, there was
a bus transfer ticket,

which suggests he was headed
for a bus stop.

narrator: Searching
their database,

the team's also discovered

a declassified Dallas
Sheriff's report

offering new information

about Oswald's possible
escape route.

The document reveals a house

located at 3128 Harlandale,

where Oswald reportedly met

with several Cuban exiles
before the assassination.

The deputy sheriff later
corrected the address

to 3126 Harlandale Street.

- After shooting the president
of the United States,

Oswald would have wanted a place

to law low until
things cooled down.

And that's why this
Harlandale address

is so interesting to me.

- Is that it right there?
- This is it here.

This looks like a safe house.
- It does.

A safe house is a
pre-established secure location

where an asset can go where
he's not gonna be compromised,

not gonna be captured by anybody
that's looking for him.

- Look at this.
This is a sheriff's report.

Local law enforcement
at 3128 Harlandale.

Some Cubans had been
having meetings

and were connected
with an organization

of which Oswald was a member.

"My informant stated

that Oswald had been
to this house before."

According to
the sheriff's report,

Cubans are living here,
and Oswald is showing up,

pre-assassination,
for some unexplained reason.

My gut tells me that the Cubans
in this report are Alpha 66.

It just makes sense based on
the evidence we've gathered.

The deputy goes on to say,

"I don't know what action
the Secret Service has taken,

"but I learned today that
the day after

the president was shot, these
Cubans moved from this house."

They move out of the safe house
the day after the assassination?

*

And the fact is,
nobody even showed up

to verify the report.

- They didn't manage this case.

This is part of
a larger crime scene.

- Yeah, if this had been in the
field in Iraq or Afghanistan,

and the special forces
had this lead,

you would have had
Black Hawks up,

people fast-roping, and
you would have been

kicking down doors here.

- And none of that was done.

None of that was done.

- For whatever reason, neither
the CIA nor the FBI

looked into this Harlandale
safe house.

I'm not sure
how it was associated

with the assassination,
but my gut tells me

there's a link here.

That bus ticket transfer,

that's the key
piece of evidence.

Where could that transfer take
him as quickly as possible?

- I think we need to look at
a two-block radius of this,

and we need to search it,
and we need to see if

possible locations or routes

that he could have got here
or left from here.

narrator: Bob and Adam begin
a search of the neighborhood,

looking for any evidence
linking the house

to Oswald's bus transfer ticket

from the day
of the assassination.

- There's got to be some
connection,

this neighborhood, that would
make sense going to.

We've looked through
all the information,

and a declassified Secret
Service document indicates

that Oswald may have
intended to take

the 55 bus to get away.

But it didn't add up for me.

It went through a busy
part of town

where Oswald could have
easily been spotted,

and it ended up
at the Greyhound station,

which would have been crawling
with police

on the day of the assassination.

After all of Oswald's training
and careful planning,

there's no way he would have
allowed himself

to be that exposed.

I want to see if
there's another bus route

closer to this safe house

that could have worked better
for Oswald's getaway.

Look at this.

Very suburban.

There's nothing here
except houses.

Where else could he have gone?

What's that over there?

- That is a bus stop.

- A half a block
from a safe house,

get off a bus, you'd be inside
within two minutes.

The 515.

There's two things
I want to know.

One, did this bus route exist
in 1963?

And if so,

did Oswald's transfer
work on this line?

I'm gonna see what I can
find on this route here.

[electronic beeping]

Are you kidding me?

Look at this route.

It goes right to where
Tippit was shot.

And it looks like the 515
hasn't changed since 1963.

It was called something else
back then,

but the route here is the same.

The same transfer ticket
in his pocket

gets him on the 515.

The 55 route, it's over that way
a couple miles.

But it doesn't provide the cover
this place does.

This is a country road
back here.

- Yeah.
- Not traveled.

Not patrolled, and we're within

two minutes of a safe house.

So if he hadn't run into Tippit,

my bet is he would have
got on this bus,

coming out here.

To my knowledge, no one's ever
looked at this bus route before.

Oswald killed Tippit
one block away

from a stop on this 515 route.

If he gets on that bus,
he could have gotten off

only a block away from the safe
house on Harlandale.

A house we know he was seen at
just before the assassination.

Look, if Lee Harvey Oswald
doesn't get arrested,

this is the bus he would have
taken, I'm convinced.

I've always believed
that a larger network

was supporting Oswald's mission
to kill Kennedy.

Now I believe we've found
evidence that could prove it.

suggesting Lee Harvey Oswald
was working with

a group of Cuban militants
to murder JFK,

and that these men
were in Dallas

a bus route

they suspect Oswald planned
to use for his getaway.

A declassified Dallas
Sheriff's report

indicates that along
that same route,

Oswald visited
a house belonging

to Cuban men before
the president's murder.

as we always have

with the evidence at hand.

Official police documents.
FBI, CIA.

The bus transfer is the one
piece of evidence

that puts us in Oswald's mind

how he intended to escape,

and that's the 515 bus route.

Whenever I'm working a case,

I take everything into account

before reaching any conclusions.

For me, the bus route we found

fits too perfectly
not to take seriously.

I've studied this case
for years,

and this is the kind of
discovery I've been looking for.

Look, here we go: Dealey Plaza,
shoots the president.

Tippit shooting,
Harlandale safe house...

Look at that.
The 515 bus route.

You don't need to be a genius
to figure this out.

He could have gotten away

had he made it
to the Harlandale house.

It's someplace that he could go

after killing the president.

Now what we need to find out is
who was at

this house on Harlandale,
and why did Oswald feel

that he could hide with them?

It's key to figuring out
who his accomplices were.

- Take a look at that.

"Review of Dallas file reflects

"that the organization known
as 'Alpha 66'

"held meetings during early 1963

"at the residence of one
Jorge Salazar,

3126 Harlandale Street,
Dallas, Texas."

- This is where Oswald was.

He's going to an Alpha 66
safe house.

Earlier in the investigation,

we found declassified documents

exposing a connection between

Oswald and Alpha 66.

We suspected they were
working together,

but this is incredible.

This is Oswald, in Dallas,

in the middle of a violent
and motivated group

who can help him murder
the president.

narrator: In the early 1960s,

the CIA armed and militarized

dozens of Cuban exile groups,

training them to overthrow
the Castro regime.

In 1961, President Kennedy
orders these men

to invade the Bay of Pigs,

nearly 120 miles from Havana,

but then withdraws air support
during the battle.

[explosions]

Hundreds are killed,
and more than 1,000

are taken prisoner.

In the aftermath,
part of Alpha 66,

one of the most radical
and violent

Cuban groups, goes rogue.

According to the House Select
Committee on Assassinations,

the leaders of Alpha 66
felt betrayed by JFK

and threatened violence against
the US president.

- We've been looking for
Oswald's accomplices.

We've found 'em.

But what I want to know is what
kind of network,

how extensive was
the Dallas network.

Any one of these people
could have helped Oswald.

to see what's around
the bus route.

- I'm gonna look at
a two-mile radius

Jorge Salazar.

We've got five other names here.

All of these houses are
all within

a two-mile radius
of the Harlandale house.

That's way too much.
- Yeah. Yeah.

- Let's plot these on a map and
see where they are in Dallas.

I want to see
if they're connected.

The six addresses,
they're all in a line.

There's not scattered
around an area

in a circle of two-mile radius.

What--I mean,
what's going on here?

I want to see these houses

on the same map
as the bus route.

All right, here we have
the bus route.

515.

Here we have the safe houses.

Let's overlay 'em.

Look at this.

- Holy [bleep].

- Every single house is right
on that bus route.

It looks like we've uncovered
a potential sleeper cell

right in the heart of Dallas,

active on the day
of the assassination.

The Warren Commission,
the FBI,

and the CIA all missed this,

either because
they wanted Oswald

to look like a lone wolf,
or because

they weren't sharing information
with each other.

Without documents from
the Dallas police,

the Secret Service,
the FBI, and the CIA,

this puzzle wouldn't have come
together so clearly.

I am now convinced
that Oswald was tied up

with Alpha 66, both before
the assassination

and in the hours afterwards.

If we want to prove
this working theory,

we need more information.

We have to find someone that
can further corroborate

Oswald's connection to Alpha 66.

to corroborate

their explosive discovery
in Dallas,

to find a source
with inside information

about Alpha 66.

and manages to track down

a former Cuban
intelligence officer

who defected to
the United States.

The team is in Miami
to try and arrange

a face-to-face meeting.

- My colleague at the Defense
Intelligence Agency

found me a reputable source

who might know something
about Alpha 66.

I'll do it at any time.

For years,
Cuban intelligence officers

who have defected to the US

have lived by an unwritten
code of silence.

They simply don't talk
about their work

for fear that if they reveal
classified information

about the Cuban government,

their lives would be at risk.

He'll do it.

- I don't know what
he's gonna tell us,

but the fact that he'll
talk to us?

He's got something to say.

with the investigation.

along the Miami River

to deliver them

Our Cuban source is following

every rule I learned
at the agency.

To set a meeting where you're
in control of every variable.

It's classic tradecraft.

they've uncovered new evidence

suggesting Lee Harvey Oswald
was working

with a group of Cuban militants

a former Cuban
intelligence officer

the United States in 1989.

the assassination,

and what we keep on

are Oswald's ties to Alpha 66,

before the assassination
and after.

was working for
Cuban intelligence?

anti-Castro,

was a double-agent.

reports back to Castro.

the assassination

was working with

who turned on Kennedy

were double agents

any exile group

If this same group is plotting
to kill Kennedy,

what this means?

- There's only one reason
why he would do it.

- I mean, he knew.

ordered the assassination?

- If this is true,
it changes everything

we think we knew about
the Kennedy assassination.

After 54 years, we are finally
getting close to the truth.

- I believe that members
of Alpha 66

were working with Oswald,

and that they were reporting
to Fidel Castro.

And if that's true,
Castro was aware

of the plot to kill JFK
in advance.

Now, I'm gonna prove it.

Oswald's possible accomplices,

rogue members of a Cuban exile

working for Fidel Castro

the assassination,

intercepting radio
transmissions from Dallas

in anticipation of
the president's murder.

I want to prove it's possible.

If we do, it only
strengthens our theory

that Alpha 66 was complicit
in the assassination plans

and worked directly with Oswald.

if Alpha 66

helped Castro
eavesdrop from Cuba

on the day of the
assassination, Bob and his team

will conduct a transmission
simulation test,

recreating the plan Bob
believes Castro implemented

in anticipation of
the president's murder.

In 1963, a police radio
broadcast from Dallas

would've emitted a low-power,
high-frequency signal,

detectable only
over short distances.

In order for Castro to listen
to Dallas radio

on the day of
the assassination,

he would've required
someone in Dallas

to relay the signal,
a job that Bob believes

was carried out by members
of Alpha 66.

These men would have utilized
a low-frequency transmitter

to boost the local signal to
the Earth's upper atmosphere,

where radio waves can reflect
hundreds of miles,

reaching a radio tower
near Havana.

To test Castro's
potential plan,

former Army Ranger
Marty Skovlund

- We're gonna run a boat
down to Cuba,

that transmission

that Bob and Adam are gonna
send from Dallas,

that's pretty heavy evidence
that Castro could have been

monitoring the entire
assassination attempt.

Instead, Marty departs Miami

to travel in range of
the radio tower

that Enrique Garcia reports
Fidel Castro used

to eavesdrop on the day
of the assassination.

evidence that suggests
he expected

the president's murder

were government officials

or military of some sort,

but I do know we need
to be careful.

If they send people
out to apprehend us,

they're gonna get us,
and they're gonna

take us into custody.

narrator: With the team no
longer in sight of the boat,

Marty makes the decision
to continue their mission,

and instructs the captain
to make a fast approach

toward the location
of the radio tower

west of Havana,
the original site where

Castro's men reportedly
intercepted

American transmissions at the
moment of the assassination.

our tower there?

- That's got to be it.

- I don't see anybody around.
Anybody chasing us?

- So far, so good.

- All right.

I think we stop in here,

and let's do our business.

narrator: To simulate
the radio tower,

Marty will utilize
a low-frequency radio

and a six-foot antenna.

- We got a short wave
radio here.

Basically, what we got to do is

point this radio
out towards Dallas.

Bob is gonna transmit signals.

We're gonna see if
we can pick it up here.

- All right, we got it.
- All right, yeah.

- All right.

narrator: As Marty gets
into position,

1,100 miles away,
back in Dallas,

Bob prepares to begin

the transmission
simulation test.

- Here's what we got here.

This is a Motorola radio from
the era 1963.

Any spy worth his salt would
have one of these radios.

This antenna right here

would have received
police communications.

The problem is this radio

transmits a very short distance.

What they would have needed

is a long-range transmitter
like this

in order to relay the message

a thousand miles away
to Havana.

narrator: When the test begins,

Adam will be in position
to broadcast a signal

through a local
police dispatch.

He will air a broadcast
reporting news

from the day of
the assassination

over local Dallas airwaves.

Bob, acting as a member
of Alpha 66 in Dallas,

will use his equipment
to boost that signal

to the Earth's
upper atmosphere.

From his position near Cuba,

Marty will attempt
to retrieve that signal

as Castro's radio tower
would have in 1963.

- What we want to do
is see if Marty

can pick up the signal from this
amateur radio

in Havana, and that's key.

That will prove Enrique's story

that Castro was listening in
to police communications

that morning before
the assassination.

If it turns out that in fact
they could have

transmitted the police
communications to Havana,

we're right on the doorstep
of the conclusion

that Castro was complicit
in the murder

of the president
of the United States.

the communications from
that morning at 12:30.

as many did on that fateful

on the arrival

of President John F. Kennedy.

The eyes of Texas and the
nation are focused on Dallas.

- There we go. I can hear it.

- Here comes the president
of the United States.

There's a big cheer going up.

[applause]

And what a crowd.

- Come on, Bob.

Nothing.

- And now the entire Main
Street is completely filled

from building to building
with people,

and the latter part of
the motorcade has just passed.

- Here comes the rest
of the motorcade.

[dramatic music]

narrator: In Dallas,
Bob is using

1960s-era technology
to try and relay

a radio signal to Marty,
who's in position

in international waters
off the coast of Cuba.

They're trying to see if Castro

could have intercepted
local Dallas radio

on the day of
the Kennedy assassination.

- Somewhat on the leading car.

- This is the transmission.

There are people actually
looking from every window

here in downtown Dallas,

and the crowd is absolutely
going wild.

There has been a shooting.

I repeat, a shooting
in the motorcade

in the downtown area.

[phone ringing]

- Marty?

- Bob. Yeah. We got it.

- Amazing. Way to go.

The fact that our transmission
test was successful

means that Fidel Castro could
have been listening live

as our president
was assassinated.

It means that Lee Harvey Oswald
could have been

working with members of
Alpha 66 as we suspected.

Double agents who
informed Castro

who looks at this objectively
to dismiss it.

Declassified documents
paint a clear picture

that begins when
a 19-year-old Oswald

attempts to defect
to the Soviet Union,

looking for communist allies.

- When the KGB rejects him,

Oswald returns
to the United States,

angry but undeterred.

He moves to New Orleans,

and seems to find his way

into another communist front.

- I would very definitely
say that I, uh,

I, uh, I'm a Marxist.
That is correct.

- The underground movement
of Cuban exiles.

Within this group,
I believe that Oswald found

accomplices that would help him
pull off the assassination.

His collaborators: members of a
group called Alpha 66,

furious with Kennedy for
abandoning their cause

during the failed
Bay of Pigs invasion.

They're armed, bitter,
ready to do violence.

- Oswald represented what the
exile community seemed to want.

- To murder Kennedy.

- Yes.

- Eight weeks before
the assassination,

he leaves New Orleans
and travels to Dallas,

where a witness
reports a meeting

with Oswald and two
Cuban radicals,

who boast of his intentions
to murder the president.

- This American,
he's been telling us

that the Cubans should have
assassinated

President Kennedy right after
the Bay of Pigs

and they didn't have
any guts to do it.

- From there, Oswald
visits Mexico City,

where he attempts
to obtain a visa

and relocate to Cuba.

When he's denied, he openly
threatens the president

inside the Cuban embassy.

Oswald stormed into the embassy

and headed out saying, "I'm
going to kill Kennedy for this."

This is incredible.

On November 22, 1963,

Oswald makes good on his
promise to kill JFK.

[rifle cocking, gunshot]

In the aftermath
of the assassination,

Oswald flees
the School Book Depository

and makes his way across town

with a bus transfer ticket
in his pocket.

Everything we've found suggests
he intended

to take the 515 southbound bus
to get away.

along that route, we found
multiple houses

belonging to several members
of Alpha 66,

safe houses that Oswald
could have used

to hide out and escape capture.

This is where Oswald was.

He's going to an Alpha 66
safe house.

Testimony from
a Cuban intelligence officer

tells us that members
of that same group

were working with
Castro all along.

Our radio test confirmed
that Castro could have been

listening on the morning
of the assassination,

complicit to the crime
of the century.
