When you write a song,

sometimes they just fall out of the air and land on your lap.

This was not one of those.

This song took years to finish.

But it was when we actually recorded some amazing voices

on the end chorus

that I got the old shivers down the spine

and I knew that it was finally complete.

So, this was one of the things that we were doing

since the last tour.

And it was a show for the millennium called "OVO".

This is essentially a kids' story,

but at one point, the world turns upside down

and you have to imagine lying on a field of grass

and looking up at the sky long enough

that you start to see the sky as down,

as an ocean below you.

And that is the state "downside up".

it's easy to be philosophical,

If you were to arrive on another planet

and discover two species that were less than 1% different,

you'd probably assume they could do many of the same things.

Yet on this planet we humans believe we are much smarter

than our ape relatives,

but, in truth, we've only 0.6% difference in our DNA.

Last year we had an amazing experience

creating music with some bonobo apes.

They turned out to have extraordinary understanding

and sensitivity, communicating and playing music with us.

That was the inspiration for this song.

It's called "Animal Nation".
