Gods rule in Heaven, demons suffer in Hell, and men stride the earth

Bearing their sins, seeking enlightenment, all three realms follow the rules of karma

The Dark Crystal memorializes the demons' bitter spiritual quest

Once in each millennium, on July 15, when the moon is full

All beings can cross realms through reincarnation

This millennium's reincarnation day draws near; Hell is sure to rumble

The city of Hu is too close to the demons' grasp

No matter how small their population, they need to prepare

Who's willing to go and look after the city?

I volunteer to go help the people of Hu make their way through this darkness

Demon!

Zhong Kui, what an amazing accomplishment!

Sister, the Dark Crystal has been stolen!

Who was wielding the sword of Hu?

I didn't see his face, just... a flash of golden light

A flash of golden light?

Could it have been one of the gods?

No god can enter Hell!

Please let me go reclaim our Dark Crystal!

Now, time for you to pay me back...

Demon Gallbladder Wine, Demon Gallbladder Wine

All you travelers, listen up!

Every person has three souls and seven spirits. Without life, the spirits can't exist

Without spirits, life can't thrive. The souls are the roots of the seven spirits

And the seven spirits are the branches and leaves of the souls. So what are these seven spirits?

These spirits are actually the seven chakras of the body, from head to toe

Where human vitality lies

Why do we sometimes feel tired, dull and drained?

That's an excellent question, my good man. Come

I didn't ask you anything

Yes, it was you!

Those are actually signs that you're losing your spirits

But I didn't ask

And now my good man asks, what are the seven spirits?

They are the spirits of Yin, Wisdom, Chi, Power, the Center,

Brilliance and Essence

Actually, they are... the seven spirits of man

If a man loses three of them, he will die

The world's a tough place these days. We must take great care in our comings and goings

So what can you do if a demon sucks out your spirits?

Nothing to fear

My Spirit Protection Potion! My family's secret formula!

My great-great grandfather

Created it using 300 different herbs

It will protect your spirits! One sip is all you need! Really!

Does it really work?

Yep.

Come here.

My wife can't get pregnant. Can you take a look at her?

It's so crowded today, Brother. How about you come alone some other time?

Now!

Why are you groping me?

Brother, your Essence Spirit is gone.

Just like I said - the problem isn't me.

What did you say?

Your Essence Spirit is gone.

You told me to take a look! I said no, but you made me!

Bull!

Stop!

Who the hell are you?

Zhong Ling

My wife

Nonsense

Sooner or later, I'll be your man...

You are shameless! Hand...

Remember this

I can hit him

And YOU cannot

Zhong Ling, your brother's back!

My brother is here? Come

The Dark Crystal...

Brother

Brother

What kind of demon is it this time?

Master

Master

Come, drink this holy elixir, replenish your strength

Zhong Kui, the Dark Crystal contains

All the spirits our good folk of Hu have lost

After seven days, all shall be saved.

Does that mean my brother can finally rest now?

This is the critical time

The demons in Hell will not rest for a moment

The safety of Hu depends on

Whether we can keep the Dark Crystal out of their hands

Master, please spare my brother.

If my brother ever got... by a demon...

Zhong Ling...

Master...

My sister has a point

The demons are so powerful

How can we humans defeat them?

But you did once say

You have a demon fighting technique to defeat them, victory guaranteed

And you would pass it on to me at the critical moment

Can now be considered that critical moment?

Have you recovered your strength?

No!

Of course!

Zhong Kui, you infiltrated the demon realm and stole the Dark Crystal

Proving yourself even more worthy of my trust

Zhong Kui, as I once told you

You are the warrior chosen by the gods

Master, your every word becomes deeply engraved in my heart

But you have not yet realized your full potential

You... still require a little more training

Keep an eye on her!

The millennium full moon will be in ten days

Your sacred duty is to keep the Dark Crystal safe

Zhong Kui, I will give you even greater power

This is the legendary magic fan

Formed of the bones and blood of 10,000 year-old bats

When a man uses a holy weapon, its power will bounce back to wound him

He must endure severe pain

Are you ready for that pain?

Master, I can take it! Please allow me to fight those demons

The pain I'd suffer if I fail to defeat them: that is true pain

Marvelous!

He is your potential

Your other side

Zhong Kui, he is you

Zhong Kui, each time you open this fan

The demon inside you will be unleashed

The greater your power, the more focused you must be

Lest you succumb to your inner demon and fall to darkness

Remember, never open this fan in front of others

Seeing you in this form, they would think you're a demon

To use your power with ease, the key is to train your mind

Only when you master your mind

Can you transcend your pain and harness your power

Submerge your heart... calm your Chi

Unsheathe your sword!

It's sheathed in your spine!

Drink this holy elixir. It will ease your symptoms

To slay demons, you must first purge your heart of demons

Master!

Behold! Who says humans can't defeat demons?

Today, you are victorious.

The Dark Crystal is yours now, and a new world is upon us

In seven days, on the night of the full moon

Your spirits will return to you

The demons will shrivel away, and Hu will enjoy eternal peace

The demons will surely attack us in full force within the week

If you stand united, you will all be heroes

I... will fight by your side

YES!

The demons who harm us will be killed

May Master show us what to do, Heaven bless our City of Hu!

May Master show us what to do, Heaven bless our City of Hu!

MOVE, MOVE!

So pretty

Enough looking! Could you be any more shameless?

Be careful or that soul of yours will be sucked right out!

That babe can have my soul or spirits whenever she wants!

Your clearance orders?

It's permission to enter Tang, issued by the capital

Which part of the West are you from?

Lou Lan

When did you set out for here?

Two months ago

No one enters the city without Lord Zhong Kui's permission

You're not allowed in! Search them!

Everybody get out now

Wait! None shall leave before I search them

Turn around

Little Snow?

I am Snow Girl, from the West

May we pass now?

Go

Do all girls from the West have such cold hands?

Let them through!

Let them through!

Come to our show tomorrow night! Like nothing you've seen before!

Don't miss it!

Come to the show!

Step aside! Search them!

What are these? Open it!

Little Snow, where have you been these past three years?

I don't know you

I'm Zhong Kui, only with a beard now

I am a demon slayer now

A demon slayer? Are you fond of killing demons, my Lord?

It's either them or me

I guess you're not Little Snow after all

I've never been to this city before

Sister, what's wrong?

The guy who stopped our caravan earlier... why did he come back?

Haven't you stared enough?

No...

Come here and make yourself useful

I'm not done looking...

All my souls and spirits are here with you

Ah, there goes your silver tongue

I hear some gorgeous women from the West arrived in town yesterday

So beautiful they look like she-demons?

They don't just "look" like demons... they ARE demons!

So you were there?

I... I... no...I was

Well... the guys said

there were a bunch of gorgeous babes

So... uh... I just stopped by to have a look

Just one look

Well... were they pretty?

Brother's home!

What's wrong with my brother?

Dunno...

"Three Years Ago"

One who gains enlightenment at dawn can die fulfilled that night

A scholar sets his intent on the Way, and is humble in his dress and habits

Who's there?

There is righteousness in this world

And it makes the sun and moon shine brighter

When calm, be as a sleeping dragon

When angry, don't refrain from speaking out

Come out!

My song will bring demons and gods to tears

My dance will reach Heaven and Earth

My words will fill the rivers and mountains

And morals will return to the world

I apologize for the other day, my Lady

But I, Zhong Kui... am righteous, and reject low and frivolous things

I eschew luxury, avoid intimacy, and hold myself apart

My sole desire is to make a great contribution

to the glory of our Tang Empire

May I come in?

I was in a hurry, but- alas, I encountered a blizzard

My Lady, your hands are so cold

My name is Little Snow; I've been icy cold since birth

It's so cold in here

I don't have a fire basin

You're studying so you can better serve the glory of the Tang Dynasty, right?

How do you know that, my Lady?

Can you even remember all these books you've read?

Yes.

The Duke of Bo Chapter of the Confucian Analects:

A scholar must have strong ambition and will: the burden is heavy, and the road is long

If he lacks ambition, he cannot carry the burden; if he lacks will, he cannot complete the journey

If one feels it his duty to achieve compassion, is that not a heavy burden?

If one is willing to persist to the end, is that not a long journey?

Sun Tzu's "Art of War":

When in a Dead End Land one must not show one's fear of death

When fighting in enemy territory, go in deep and the troops will stay focused;

remain on the edge and they will never bond together

An area with no way out is a Dead Land

When in a Dead Land, one mustn't show fear of death

Therefore, in matters of military strategy...

... one becomes a bookworm

The Book of Rites:

To await someone worthy of love

To wait through past and present lives, is it worth it?

Does the Book of Rites really say that?

Is it not worth it?

I was wondering why she looked so familiar

The one I said is especially beautiful

looks exactly like the lady in that painting

Are you kidding, or for real?

Why would I lie about that?

I return to Heaven tomorrow

The demons will fight to the death for the Dark Crystal

The Kirin will help you guard it

Zhong Kui

You must protect the Dark Crystal. Make sure it's intact

What happens tomorrow night will determine our fates for the next millenium

Are all of you ready?

How long have you been a demon?

Six centuries?

And you, nine centuries?

And you must be over a thousand years old, right?

If we fail, that means...

We'll have to suffer in Hell for another thousand years

The hardship of spiritual practice is bearable

What scares me more... is the loss of hope

You shall not transform without my order!

You must make your utmost effort tomorrow night...

to not draw anyone's suspicion

Especially the demon slayers'!

I want to drink! Who dares to try to stop me?

I want Demon Gallbladder Wine!

We don't have any!

I knew you wouldn't, so I brought my own

Have a sip with me... just one sip

My Lord, please

Why is it so cold?

Frost is flying in July. There's a chill in the air

Rumor has it that demons are in the city

Demons are coming to destroy Hu. Have you heard, my Lord?

Great! It's showtime!

How do you catch demons, Lord Zhong?

Using my eyes... I fix my eyes on them...

Until they reveal themselves!

What are demons like in broad daylight?

Most demons take the form of beautiful women

Is there a demon Lord Zhong won't slay?

Come see my performance tomorrow night!

Depends on who it is!

Sister, what if he doesn't come tomorrow?

He will

To await someone worthy of love

To wait through past and present lives

Is it worth it?

When bewitching the heart of a man, beware of falling under your own spell

"Three Years Ago"

Under the snow-covered plum tree, Zhong Kui meets Little Snow

Let the plum blossoms be our witnesses

We shall be like Heaven and Earth, You and Me

Heaven and Earth?

But I'm not a Moon Goddess

You are my... Snow Girl

If I were a demon,

would you still love me?

If you were truly a demon

My spirits would be long gone by now

Is a demon's love... undeserving of a human's?

Humans and demons walk separate paths. Always have and always will

Nothing is colder than the blood of humans

What is illusion?

Illusion gives you what was never yours to begin with

Name your wishes, what do you want?

Money! Lots and lots of it!

With money, I can have everything

Here you go

But don't think it's real

Money... oh money

He's not here yet

Now it's your turn

"See you at the school courtyard - Snow"

To await someone worthy of love

To wait through past and present lives...

Is it worth it?

Dark Crystal...

Please leave the Demon Suppressing Pagoda

Dark Crystal, please come here

Let the people of Hu regain their lost spirits

Let's move!

Bring it back to Hell

Sister? Aren't you coming?

You go first

Go,now

There are demons in the city... trying to steal the Dark Crystal...

Did you capture them?

You're not the Little Snow you were back then

And I'm no longer the same Zhong Kui

You are a demon!

Are you going to kill me?

I won't let anyone hurt you!

The Dark Crystal has returned!

Where is it?

Your Highness... I never opened it!

Those tricky humans. You have all been fooled

I entered the Pagoda... and there was a black monster there

A black monster?!

My sister and her people are in danger now

Your Highness... I need to go back

Why is your brother leaving her here?

She's brother's lover

Are you looking for me?

You dropped your sword

You're using sorcery again, don't you dare scare him!

I don't know you...

but I know who you are

You're the one in my brother's painting. You're Little Snow!

Three years ago, you left without a word

Do you know how my brother pined for you, every day for the past three years?

Every night that winter...

He'd pass out drunk under the blossoming plum tree

When morning came, he'd be blanketed in snow

He didn't die...

But it was like he lost his life when you left

Why did you leave him?

Come watch the dancing girls get arrested! Let's go!

Last night, a deadly fight took place here

Demons were trying to steal the Dark Crystal

But they failed!

The Dark Crystal is still ours...

Just as I'm still yours...

But the danger hasn't passed yet

We must unite ourselves over these last three days

To ensure we don't lose the Dark Crystal

And in the end... eternal peace will dawn on the City of Hu

Do you know them?

They're dancers

Demons!

Kill the demons!

Kill the demons!

The smell of demons...

Sister...

Isn't she that dancer?

She's a snow demon!

No matter what kind of demons they are...

If they dare set foot on this land...

there's only one end in store for them

Kill her! Kill her!

Zhong Kui, it's your turn now!

Kill the demons!

Kill her!

Kill the demons! Kill the demons!

Master...

Please spare her life!

Fine!

Brother!

The demons are attacking our city!

Protect the Dark Crystal!

Yes, Master!

Follow me!

Zhang, you've been behind this all along!

About time!

Zhong Kui! I bestow the almighty power upon you!

Protect the City of Hu!

So the Black Monster is Zhong Kui

Zhong Kui, kill him!

Kill him!

Protect his Highness!

How dare you align with our enemies today!

One mistake after another

Go, kill that snow demon!

Get out!

The way you hold that sword... hasn't changed a bit

I'm taking you with me!

Zhong Kui

Water

Water

Water... here's water

More

Water... Zhong Kui!

How is it that you can transform?

I'm about to burst!

So it was you at the Pagoda the other day?

Don't you hurt him!

I'm here to save him!

The Spirit-Reviving Elixir?

Zhong Kui, this is no magic elixir

Zhang feeds you this every other day...

to protect your seven spirits from scattering

The soul is lost, but the spirits are intact. Do you get it now?

Drink this

Sister, take him back to Hell

His Highness will explain everything to him

Citizens, listen up! The curfew will be in effect from 7pm to 5am

I hear it was Lord Zhong who let that demon go

He ran away too

Demons are demons, after all

Even Lord Zhong couldn't resist her charms

None shall enter the city without a permit

Any demon sightings must be reported immediately

What are you doing?!

Brother?

Brother... brother

What happened to you?

Citizens, listen up! The curfew will be in effect from 7pm to 5am

None shall enter the city without a permit

Any demon sightings must be reported immediately

Can you check and see what's happened to me?

Your spirits are fine...

Brother...

What is it, Du Ping?

I can't feel his pulse

Brother, you've lost your life force

That's outrageous! Liar! How can Brother be dead?

Isn't he right here now? You're lying!

How did I smash my head on the golden tablet?

And how did I come back?

Why can't I remember anything?

I couldn't stop crying. I thought I'd never see you again.

And then?

Then Master Zhang brought you back

A god is a god

You came back as if nothing had happened

Not even a scar on your head

I need to go to Hell

I need to find out who I really am

I'm going with you

Zhong Kui... you are here

All love between humans and demons is bound to be star-crossed

And you, Xue Qing. Fell for a mix of both!

Stop!

Without the Dark Crystal, Hell has no future

Let her go

Zhong Kui, scholar from Hu, you were meant to be the highest-ranked scholar of this Dynasty

But you were framed by an evildoer and died when you smashed your head on the Golden Tablet

Your wronged soul was resurrected by Zhang

And he trained you to steal the Dark Crystal for him

You're lying!

This is your blade, right?

Only demons can enter our world. Even gods can't

If you aren't a demon, how can you grow 10 feet tall?

Zhang has turned you into a demon

Zhong Kui... you are a demon

I am not a demon!

This is my true self

Don't you want the truth?

This is the truth!

This millennium's day of reincarnation is dawning

Are you ready to become a god?

We've never once ceased our spiritual practice, no matter how hard it might be

With the very little spiritual force you have...

You lack the energy needed to fully power the Dark Crystal

You can, however...

Suck away the humans' spirits and empower yourselves

This is the only shortcut for powering up the Dark Crystal

But isn't that against the rule of Heaven?

Finally, I couldn't resist the temptation

And the Dark Crystal's energy grew so quickly

It wasn't until I saw you in Hu

that I realized what was happening

What did Master plan to do with the Dark Crystal?

It is now the greatest force of all three realms

If he were to gain control of it

Chaos would result, and all beings face utter annihilation

Don't you even think of using me

I'm not a demon!

The people who lost their spirits were innocent

So are most of the demons in my realm!

I broke the rules, and I'll suffer the consequences

But what about Little Snow?

If the Dark Crystal is opened tomorrow, she'll vanish into thin air

You won't even save her?

Don't we look alike?

But you're not me...

And I'm not you.

We both have a destiny to fulfill

If you can manage to recapture my power

You can stop Zhang Daoxian

Only you can restore

the order of the three realms

Zhang Daoxian will use the Dark Crystal's power to destroy mankind

Tomorrow's full moon marks the end of human and demon realms

The Dark Crystal holds the record of our spiritual cultivation

Only once, every thousand years, on the 15th day of the 7th month

Do we have a chance to purge our sins and gain rebirth

Some become gods

And others remain demons

It is the work of the Dark Crystal

That decides these destinies

I'm a demon slayer

Killing your kind is all I know how to do

How can I save your world?

Master Zhang

What are you doing here with the Dark Crystal?

Have you obtained the Spirit-Reviving Elixir?

You went to Hell

Where is the Demon King?

Is it true, what he said?

You got here just in time! Come!

Tomorrow is July 15

Our distinguished guests will all be here

Allow me to introduce them

Here sits Heavenly King Li

His son Nezha achieved great fame at an early age

This is Avalokitesvara

The truly merciful, who shall bring us salvation

This is the Queen of Heaven

The magic cudgel from the West's Great Kunlun Mountains

And this is the Jade Emperor

Who has been sitting on that throne for over 10,000 years

Such a banquet. Where do you think I should sit?

Zhong Kui, I should thank you

You are the one who brought me the Dark Crystal

Tomorrow, at midnight

I will attain the highest spiritual cultivation of all three realms

And from this day forth

The throne will forever be mine!

So, everything you've told me...

Was a lie?

The best stories convince everyone

Think about it

Who would still worship the gods if the world were at peace?

No desire, no needs

Humans must have dreams in order to become believers

Now, with fear in their hearts, they'll need me

Zhang Daoxian

You're already a god. What more do you wish for?

You've never been to Heaven

You don't know how high the stairs reach

Am I a god lesser than any of those others?

Why should I be the one stuck at the bottom?

I've never even set foot in the Jade Emperor's Palace!

Everyone wants to be a god

But then what?

Every time I'm shamed, I tell myself that

One day, I'll turn all of this upside down!

So you tempted the Demon King to take human spirits

And you used me to steal the Dark Crystal

You've caused cosmic chaos and annihilated humans and demons without regret

All this, just for ambition?

I will tell the people of Hu the truth!

And who would believe you?

Zhong Kui, you're just a convenient pawn

You are nothing

Back then, you couldn't reincarnate because you reeked of resentment

Not because your will was strong

I made all that up to fool you

You don't have a soul, and I'm the one keeping your spirits intact

Tomorrow... after the Dark Crystal is opened

All the people's spirits will be taken from them

Earth will become a land of the walking dead

It'll be the greatest crime in human history

And I became your accomplice...

To achieve greatness, there will always be collateral damage

Do you really want to be my enemy?

I've been preparing for this banquet for a thousand years

Just one more day... and no one shall sabotage my work!

You... are the biggest demon of all!

Get out!

You are no longer my pupil!

It's Zhong Kui! What is he doing back here?

Stay away from him! Lover of vile demons!

Brother!

Brother!

Brother, what are you doing back here? You must run

They'll come for you

What are you doing following him? Go away!

Move! Move!

Brother!

Move!

We've both been waiting for midnight

Waiting for the moment our lost spirits will return to us

Waiting for Hell to vanish, for peace on Earth

But it's all a lie!

Zhong Kui, have you gone mad?!? Don't talk nonsense!

This has been Zhang Daoxian's scheme all along!

Your words are poison!

Zhong Kui, don't force us to draw our swords

Your words are poison! Brother would never lie to you

This is the moment Zhang Daoxian's been so hungry for

At midnight he will seize our spirits

Our great city will turn into a purgatory

Liar! Liar!

And all of us will turn into demons!

Master!

Don't you kneel to him!

Du Ping!

Get up!

Don't you bow to him! No bowing!

He is the monster! He's been lying to us!

He doesn't want us to get our spirits back!

We'll all turn into demons at midnight!

Do you believe him?

No!

Everyone, take a good look at Zhong Kui

Look at him

Zhong Kui, aren't you exhausted from holding onto that human skin?

Why don't you show us your true form?

Stop! Don't hit my brother! Stop it!

Hit him! Hit him!

Don't hurt my brother!

Don't hurt my brother!

Hit him!

Protect the Master!

Zhong Kui, what are you waiting for? Show your true form!

Why don't you attack us in your demon form?

Demon!

Beat that demon! Beat it!

Zhong Kui has turned into a demon!

My brother is not a demon... He IS Zhong Kui...

Kill him!

Zhong Kui...

Zhong Kui!

I'm nothing more than a lost soul, used like a pawn for three years

It doesn't matter whether you're human or demon...

You didn't do anything wrong

You want to go back to Hu?

Tonight will be the final battle

Wherever you go

I'll be by your side

"The mysteries of Heaven and Earth..."

"The never-ending spiritual practice..."

"The three realms and beyond..."

"The gold light shining from above..."

"The invisible Tao..."

"That which governs heaven and earth..."

"Keep reciting..."

"Your senses and spirit will benefit..."

Du Ping, do you believe all this?

I can't trust him

"Demons and monsters will tremble with fear and scamper..."

Bold

I'm here for the Dark Crystal

Vile creature

A god who doesn't cultivate his spiritual character

But instead deceives the whole world and destroys mine

You saved Zhong Kui just to use him

You false god!

Die!

I'm not here to fight my brothers

I don't want to kill anyone

Move!

"Demons will tremble with fear..."

I have sealed her up

Nothing will ever tempt you again

A great hero falling for a demon

You're no exception, even you

Is "love" so mesmerizing?

Is it worth it?

Forever... and always...

... worth it

Zhong Kui, "Be calm and focused, and you shall gain true wisdom"

None of your demon forms represent your true nature

Go, reincarnate. We need you up in Heaven
