brought here for safe keeping.

Was camped up on the hill
just at the top here.

The crown jewels were saved
by some local people,

Smuggled out of the castle,

And taken down to
the local church and buried,

For about eight or nine years.

And then, when charles ii.

Was re-established as,
the king of britain,

The crown jewels
were given back to him.

The people that got the jewels
out... was it a woman?

It was a woman.

The person who was
in charge of the castle.

Was a guy called george ogilvy,

And his wife arranged
with another woman,

Mrs. Grainger,
who is the minister's wife.

She arranged in secret with her
to smuggle them out.

And didn't even tell
her husband.

about alexander campbell,

great-great-grandfather.

They go all the way back

The oldest, record we have
is a chart.

That was given to the city
by king william the lion.

In the 1180s.

What about the campbells?

How... where do you think
that they might've come from?

It's hard to say how far back
they go and where they go.

It's also the origin
of the name campbell,

Because it's more
of a nickname originally.

The word originally
means "sneery".

"Sneery" like... effectively.

So, that was... it all makes
so much sense right now.

is listed as a quarrier,

So he would've had a quarry.

They turn up in a couple of post
office directories, as well.

Now, I've got
a slightly later one here,

But by this point,
he's changed his profession.

Alexander... contractor.

He sounds a little shady.

He's jack of
a great number of trades,

But by the same token,
he kind of never quite achieves.

A kind of prominence in the city
that other people do,

And I'm... I have
a sneaking suspicion that.

That's actually on purpose.

At this point in July 1859,

Alexander campbell
purchases two shares.

Previously, we have
detailed records.

Of what cargoes
people were bringing in.

Contraband rum, or...
So, that might...

What... it might be, like, rum.

It could be.
He could be a rumrunner.

This is for 1879,
and alexander campbell is noted.

As being a proprietor
of ironmonger's court.

This is the last place
where he lived.

What is ironmonger's court?

It's an alleyway that led off
of the main street.

Ironmonger?
Blacksmith, effectively.

There are three flats,

And the third one
is occupied by alexander.

There's a few photographs
that wou... that show.

The neighborhood around there,

Which was one of aberdeen's
most notorious slums.

These are very heavily
subdivided tenements.

So, you get numerous families.

Living in incredibly
cramped conditions.

The town decided to demolish
in the 1920s...

Really? ...Because it was
a public health hazard.

So, this aberdeen, this is
the city as it was then.

That's the house...

Ironmonger's court, where he
would've lived in his last year.

Wow. And it's still there.

Wow. So, it's just...
just north of here.

They demolished
everything around it.

So, when he died,

Did he have
pretty much nothing left?

Um, they don't have
a lot to their name.

This is, like, a great mystery.

It sounds shady as heck
to me... all of it.
