To be back in the UK feels amazing, you know,

cos it's been so long.

I've lived over in America for a long time.

It's fantastic.

I mean, it's beyond anything I could've imagined.

I mean, all the gigs are important,

but Wembley Stadium is like the special one of all.

We're heading for production rehearsals,

which involves very many complicated things.

Like, are all the lights working,

are all the enormous backdrops working?

Everything that has to work has to work tonight, really,

because if it doesn't, there's gonna be big trouble tomorrow.

I ended up in LA just enjoying the life,

the sunshine, the blue sky that I'd written about,

and I thought: "Yeah, that's a good idea,

let's get some blue sky."

I do miss that kind of English landscape.

I probably always see England as a green and pleasant land,

you know, that kind of view.

Beautiful little villages with rolling hills,

almost like a painting.

you expect cold, bloody pissing down weather,

and what do you get? The same shit.

We're gonna run through the whole set.

Make sure the balances are correct,

Cos we have such a complex arrangement.

Which is also fun and challenging,

and you've really gotta have your wits about you.

I thought I would go mad, you know, at first, thinking:

But it actually does sound like the record,

because I've got enough people to cover all the parts.

And I never did have before, in the old days.

Every single note is where it should be.

That's the best ELO's ever sounded.

"Do Ya" is a real quirky song. It always was.

I did write it when I was about 22.

Recorded that one in the front room of my mum and dad's house.

It's probably the oldest song that we ever play.

The stage set is the biggest one I've ever seen,

and it's got a flying saucer above it.

It's just beautiful to look at.

I have to turn round a lot, you know,

when we we're rehearsing, just to look at it

and go: "Wow, that's pretty unbelievable."

and I thought: "I must go there."

And he's come with me

because my wife is with my daughter, also here in London,

and they go in the musical but he goes with me here.

You get a younger generation.

I always loved the tune. It's my favourite song I ever wrote

because of the chords, they're really great chords.

It's just a fluke, I suppose.

But, anyway, I'd never done it. I thought that was great for me

to be able to resurrect the song for our group.

Jeff is a perfectionist,

you only have to listen to his records.

A perfectionist expects it to be right.

So it's a pleasure to work for somebody

who expects standards to be great,

and we'll push those as much as we can.

I'm not a hard band leader to please now.

I mean, I am, really. I don't let anything slide.

If there's something bugging me, I'll be right there to say:

"Can you not do that?"

His ears are insanely good.

He'll hear one thing that you do and be like:

"Wait, that's not right."

Which is wonderful, really,

because it just means that the show is so precise,

so it sounds so good.

I think he lets everyone do their thing,

and then he'll point out every little bit

that's not as it should be.

It doesn't happen often, because they're so good

and they've got infinite patience,

they learn everything so well

that I've got every faith in them, total confidence.

There's a great meeting of minds,

because as much as he's a genius,

he recognises the love, the desire, the passion

that we have for his music.

So there's a brilliant understanding.

We all love the music.

Everyone in this band is an arch fan.

So to get to stand on stage with the man himself

and play those songs,

it's incredible. I would say it's about as much fun

you can have with your clothes on.

You look at the songs he's written,

check his name on those records,

the Tom Petty and the Beatles stuff,

the George Harrison, you know, and going back and back,

you know, there's not many people who'll ever do that.

What surprises me about music

is that I can still find new chords

after, like, 50 years of playing guitar.

I go: "Shit, where did that come from?"

It's only one little plank of wood about that long.

Wonderful instrument, the guitar.

When you get under the bonnet of the tunes

the way we do in the band,

you sort of see how well they're crafted,

and it's a testament to how long it's been

since he wrote some of them

and people can still connect with them now.

And new fans on top of that.

There's a whole new generation of fans.

People still go to watch classical music,

cos it's fantastic music.

It's the same with pop. Great pop.

You know, you can't beat it, really.

I mean, seriously,

on stage sometimes, you know, I'm with the bass player

and we just go like that, pinch ourselves.

Because we're going, you know: "This is incredible."

For me, the most surprising thing

about Jeff Lynne is how normal he is.

He's just a normal guy who loves music.

If I was to sum Jeff up in one word,

it would probably be genius,

but with a fabulously large amount of modesty in there.

but the right kind of genius.

is totally amazing,

I suppose ELO's home is in my head,

nowadays especially.
