MAN: [ON WALKIE-TALKIE] We need to clear building.
CAL: What are you doing?
I'm not gonna let anyone else see these files before we do.
We don't know who Elliot was working with,
who else was on Meridian's payroll.
I don't trust anyone at this point.
INTERPOL OFFICER: Going through door.
Em, hurry. Interpol's in the building.
EMILY: He was injecting the refugees with some kind of virus.
His guards were escorting a tech guy
with two grey briefcases out of the building
just before everything went sideways.
Do you have any idea who he's trying to sell it to?
EMILY: Hope the answer is in these files.
Nick.
Nick, the password.
They are three doors away.
Hurry, hurry, hurry.
Come on, come on, come on.
What in the hell is that?
Chemical purchases, communications.
It'll take weeks to go through all this.We don't have weeks.
CAL: They are behind the door.
Elliot's bioagent's out there.
Now.
Drop your weapons! Down on the ground now!
FBI! FBI! Don't shoot.
Hands in the air. Don't move.
FBI.
Pop!
Emily! [LAUGHS] Is it you?Yes.
Nick! Thank God! So glad to see you!
NICK: Thank you. WARREN: Hey.
Flynn! They're here.
JACK: Hey. Hey, good to see you.
Oh, I'm so sorry about everything. It's okay.
Thank you. Hey, sis.
Ohh. Easy.
You okay? Yeah, I'm good.
[NICK SOBBING]
Hey, I made you something.
Wow. What is this? FLYNN: Tea.
EMILY: Thank you.
Hmm.
Mom. Yeah?
Was it hard to rescue Dad?
[DOGS BARKING]
Yes.
Thank you for bringing Dad back.
Can I ask you a question?
Were you scared when Dawkins came to the house?
At the beginning, but it all happened so fast.
And I remembered what Grandpa told me about fear.
And I thought of you and Dad, so...
And I wasn't scared any more.
Good, good.
I hope you never have to be scared of anyone.
I know you do.
You don't have to worry about me anymore.
I'm always gonna worry about you.
What, even when I'm grown up,
living on my own? Yeah, always and forever.
[CHUCKLES]
[KISSES]
JULIANNE: What does it mean, anyway?
NICK: It's amalgamation of Kai's childhood nicknames
for her Greek father and Japanese mother.
JULIANNE: How long to catalog the files?
There's gigabytes of data here.
Um, my guess is it'll take me at least a few days.
Weeks, if you want me to go through everything with a fine-tooth comb.
I'll back these up to our offsite server in Cambridge.
Is it safe? Good. Should be.
NICK: We found two facilities. One was a medical testing complex,
and the other one was a prison camp for refugees
where Elliot Brandstetter, Meridian's boss was moving something.
As you catalog everything, keep in mind that Meridian was testing
biological compounds on refugees.
What are you thinking?
There might be some connection
between medical and pharmaceutical companies.
Let's be discreet about this until we know what we have on our hands.
NICK: He was trying to protect someone.
The answer must be in the files.
[THROUGH EARBUDS] โช The good times
โช He gave me
โช Somewhere down the line
โช Why not fall for one who's mine?
[CHUCKLES]
[HUMMING]
โช I see
โช God knows how I'll try
โช Just to keep them all alive โช
You still listen to these guys?
They just did a reunion tour.
Oh. And yes, the '90s are back.
Now you're just trying to make me feel old.
How do you think that makes me feel?
[LAUGHS]
Thank you for everything at the farm.
It was my turn to get shot.
No.
You gave Flynn a chance to escape.
I'm glad you were there.
DIANE: I'm around cops all day
and you bring me to a cop bar?
Is that some kind of federal torture tactic?
They have a good happy hour.
Every bar has a good happy hour.
What do you care?
The drinks are on me.
You get to sip your muddled fruit thing and I get to rant.
So be real with me.
What do you think about Webb being the mole?
Honestly? Mmm-hmm.
What I think doesn't matter.
I'm a city servant, and not some big-boy government bullshit.
But I do know what it's like to lose one of your own,
and internalizing is the worst thing you can do.
Come on, Diane. The whole thing, it was way too easy.
Webb was a smart guy.
He was an FBI special agent in New York for decades.
And what, we just catch him on the take, like, that easily?
Uh-uh.
He was smarter than the evidence shook out,
or at least he should have been.
So what's your next move?
JULIANNE: It pains me to say this, Emily,
but this is our investigation, not yours.
EMILY: Because I don't work with people I can't trust.
You had thousands of choices you could have made.
JULIANNE: I stand by my decision.
EMILY: You feel threatened by someone like Alice.
JULIANNE: I'm ordering you to walk away.
Take care of yourself and your son.
WARREN: Em, you down there?Yeah.
Hey. What's wrong?
Nothing, Dad.
You still looking into her?
I can't keep putting you guys in the middle of all this stuff.
We're in this together, baby.
That bastard who attacked us at the farm...
Dawkins? Left a little souvenir behind.
The call logs have been erased.
But I figure you might have a trick or two up your sleeves.
Oh. Nice, yeah. Yeah?
Okay.
CAL: You asked to see me.
I had hoped I'd have received more regular updates from you.
Yeah, and we're in the middle of nowhere. The situation was fluid.
Well, we got Nick back alive and in one piece.
In my book, that's a win.
So, what's next? Excuse me?
For you, here at the FBI.
Before I left, you were more concerned with my past.
Given everything that's happened since then,
that's water under the bridge as far as I'm concerned.
Is it? It is.
Look, you're entitled to have a say in your next assignment.
White collar, narcotics,
counter-intelligence, you name it.
No, I just... I don't know yet.
Think about it.
Both the Bureau and I want to show our appreciation for what you've done.
You did a great job, Special Agent Isaac.
Let me know what you're interested in,
and I'll do everything in my power to make it happen.
Okay? Okay.
[DOOR OPENS] [BUZZER SOUNDS]
JIMMY: We're closed.
No, no, no. I need to talk to Darius.
He's not here.
Jimmy. Jimmy, it's Emily. Open the door.
[BUZZER SOUNDS]
What the hell happened? Where is he?In hiding.
What? He pulled a Snowden.
He's hanging out in Chile till the dust settles.
Call logs have all been erased. Can you retrieve any of this?
Residual data will be on the phone's memory bus . But...
How long? Uh, like, a couple days.
Okay. Do it.
EMILY: Thanks for coming.
Everything all right? Yeah, everything's good.
I'm just getting settled in, you know.
Yeah, I can imagine.
How's Flynn? Good. He's good.
So Webb was working with Meridian, the whole time?
It would seem so.
But? The evidence looks compelling.
Something ain't adding up. Keep asking myself what I missed.
And?
And I don't have any answers. But...
I can't shake that feeling.
You know what I mean?
You got any theories as to who else might be behind all of this.
Are you gonna do something about it?
I already started.
But our moles already left a trail of bodies,
so we have to play this smart.
MAN: [ON TV] ...her thoughts on the recent events
outside of Schoenberg, Austria.
BRIGITTE: Border Outreach is securing a new facility in Mali
to help those escaping violence and bloodshed.
It's a travesty these at-risk groups are being exploited...
EMILY: What the...
...which is why Border Outreach acts and advocate for their rights.
Over the last three years... [PHONE RINGS]
Hey. EMILY: Cal, you near a TV?
Sort of. Why? Turn it on to channel 320.
Border Outreach has worked with displaced population...
I met the woman who is talking
at that party that I snuck into in Berlin.
It can't be a coincidence that a woman who's in charge of a nonprofit
for refugees was at the same party as a guy who's testing on refugees.
In several countries around the world...
You know I don't believe in coincidences?
BRIGITTE: ...expand our global footprint in places
where we don't yet have people on the ground.
Holy shit.
[LINE BEEPING]
Hey, it's Canto.
Um, I know this may sound weird,
but I need to see you right now.
I found something you're going to want to see.
You got these files from Meridian?
Looks like they purchased a ton of research some time in the last few years.
Uh, research about me, about...Not exactly.
Among the hundreds of Meridian folders,
was one labeled, "Pharmaceutical Patents."
Inside that folder
was another called
Project Quill,
and that name rang a bell, so I went down a rabbit hole
and eventually found you.
I need you to check for someone else in those files.
[PHONE BUZZES]
Hey.
CAL: Brigitte Kerlan is in Boston this week
for her company's annual board of directors meeting.
It explains why she was on TV.
We have to find a connection between
her company, Meridian, and the NGO.
What about the Meridian files?
I already got someone looking into it.
Let me guess. Canto.
She's gonna let me know if she finds anything.
Good, good.
Hey, um, do you wanna get a drink?
Or something?
I have something that I've got to do, but rain check?
Sure.
[PHONE BEEPS OFF]
[FOOTSTEPS PATTERING]
You asked me to look for links between Brigitte Kerlan and Meridian.
Brigitte Kerlan and her husband Marcus
are the owners of Kerlan Pharmaceuticals.
One of the biggest Big Pharma companies in the world.
Okay.
These are wire transfers between Kerlan Pharmaceuticals
and Meridians offshore shell accounts,
run by one Elliot Brandstetter.
Elliot was doing business with a major
legitimate pharmaceutical company?
Kerlan Pharma was running tests on refugees.
And Brigitte Kerlan is pretending to be a saint
through her work with Border Outreach.
Holy shit.
CAL: What Canto found checks out, so,
other than the financial trail between Kerlan Pharmaceuticals and Meridian,
what do we have? Kerlan Pharmaceuticals...
Has been stockpiling massive quantities of chemical compounds.
Almost like they're anticipating something, the bioagent.
They know something is on its way.
Well, since she's in town, why don't I go pay Mrs. Kerlan a friendly visit?
See what I can learn.
[INDISTINCT CHATTER]
Special Agent Nick Durand here to speak with Mrs. Brigitte Kerlan.
Do you have an appointment?
No, but she's gonna want to speak with me.
Let me check upstairs. Good idea.
I'm afraid Mrs. Brigitte Kerlan is not available.
Oh, perhaps I didn't make myself clear.
I'm here on behalf of the FBI.
Sir, you need to have... I think you need to call her again.
You need to have an appointment.I think you should.
You should try her just one more time.
For me.
[LINE RINGS]
Yes, it's me. Yes, he's very persistent.
Okay.
[RECEIVER THUDS] [CLEARS THROAT]
Hey. Hey.
Come in.
Is anyone home?
No.
All right.
EMILY: Is everything okay?
Uh, where do you stay?
So this is where you're living.
Yeah.
I, uh...
I'm sorry.
I'm sorry about the phone.
And about the text.
I was trying to buy you more time to find Nick.
I wanted to keep you safe.
I don't need protection, Cal.
What do you need?
Let me know.
[DOOR OPENS]
[DOOR CLOSES]
[IMPERCEPTIBLE]
Mrs. Kerlan is not available right now.
You'll have to leave the property.
[PHONE RINGS, BUZZES]
How'd it go?
NICK: They showed me the door.
So much for the friendly visit.[LAUGHS] Yeah.
I think it's time we bring in Brigitte Kerlan officially.
All right, who's gonna tell Gunnarsen?
I don't like it. CAL: We need to talk to her.
I mean, I don't like bringing Emily Byrne into the mix.
Emily is the only person who's ever met Brigitte Kerlan.
She's not an agent. I don't want her in this building.
CAL: Why wouldn't we want her to at least observe?
Maybe she sees something we don't.
Please. This is worth a shot.
She says nothing. She does nothing. Understood?
CAL: Sure.
[DOOR OPENS]
[SIGHS DEEPLY] [DOOR CLOSES]
LAWYER: [ON SPEAKER] Mrs. Kerlan is well known in the nonprofit community.
CAL: Yes, we understand that.
LAWYER: And we're here voluntarily.
CAL: And we thank you for it.
Then what's it all about?
So, Mrs. Kerlan, you are aware of the recent activities in Eastern Austria.
You know I am.
You said you saw me on television talking about it.
CAL: I did. Does your company have anything to do with what happened?
[SIGHS] Why would we risk everything we worked so hard to build
by associating with such a tragedy?
Look at our philanthropic work.
We are very proud of what we've been able to do for refugees around the world.
Does your NGO have anything to do with using refugees as human lab rats
to test biological agents?
Is that a joke?
We think that Border Outreach
is a smoke screen to cover for illegal experiments.
LAWYER: My client knows nothing
about any experiments, illegal or otherwise.
CAL: What about the pharmaceutical compounds
your company's been stockpiling?
According to public records, you've bought many rare and...
We have a large R&D division. So yes, we buy in bulk.
Our team spends years developing new products. This is not at all unusual.
Ask anyone in our industry.
So you're not expecting a viral outbreak?
Of course not. How can anyone anticipate a viral outbreak?
If you know the answer, there's not a single person in medicine
who wouldn't pay a king's ransom for that knowledge.
Okay.
LAWYER: What is this?
JULIANNE: Did you know about these documents?
This is a king's ransom.
Financial transactions linking Kerlan Pharmaceuticals, your company,
to offshore shell companies owned by the criminal Elliot Brandstetter.
[DOOR OPENS]
[IMPERCEPTIBLE] [DOOR CLOSES]
Mrs. Kerlan, it would be a shame for any of this to go public.
Are you laying charges against my client?
Absolutely not.
JULIANNE: I think we're done here.
Brigitte, why's your company associating with known criminals?
LAWYER: Neither my client nor her companies
have anything to do with any of this.
JULIANNE: Thank you for your time and cooperation. Good-bye.
What the hell was that?
Showing evidence that I hadn't vetted to a possible suspect.
I thought you were in the loop. I'm sorry that you...
We'll be lucky if they don't sue for libel or ask for your termination.
People this wealthy rarely do time behind bars.
You know, even if we did follow up on what you're suggesting,
they will take it through the courts. It will take years.
And all they'll end up in the end is with a slap on the wrist.
We don't have years.
Brandstetter's bioagent could get out there any day now.
Oh, you want to catch a fox?
Be smarter than the fox and keep me in the loop.
Do that, and maybe next time, you won't get the runaround
from a suspect you've brought in for questioning.
[DOOR CLOSES]
Tell your guy to get out of here.
[ELEVATOR DINGS]
Hello again, Sasha. Or shall I call you Emily?
So you know who I am?
I knew at the party.
This could get ugly.
Is that a threat?
Our company has an army of lawyers at our disposal.
And an army.
Well, if you actually know who I am...
Then you know I won't stop.
I didn't think you would.
[KNOCK ON DOOR]
Can we come in? FLYNN: Enter.
Both of you? [SCOFFS] What'd I do now?
Nothing. We just want to tuck you in.
Dad.
I know. I'm gross.
But just let us pretend that you're a kid for five minutes,
and then you can go back to being the adult that you are, okay?
Okay.
[GRUNTING]
What you reading?
Uncle Jack gave it to me.Hmm.
Count of Monte Cristo, huh?
Do you like it? Yeah.
Yeah, he outsmarted everyone.Mmm-hmm.
You know what the Count says?
In life, you don't make choices out of fear
but you make them in spite of it.
I'm really glad you're home.
Thank you.
Makes three of us.
EMILY: Hmm.
[WATER RUNS]
[DOG HOWLS OUTSIDE]
[WATER STOPS RUNNING]
NICK: Our family has a target on their backs. We have to be careful.
So what do you want to do?
We should have Flynn stay at Jack's.
For how long?
Uh, I don't know.
We have to do something.
[PHONE RINGS, BUZZES]
Sorry, I have to get this.
Hey. Tell me you found something.
Did I ever.
The residual call logs were on the phone's memory bus.
Several calls to an unlisted European number
and one, two weeks ago,
to an unlisted number right here in Boston.
I retrieved the local number for you.
Assumed you might have an idea who it might belong to.
Yeah. Sure do.
[PHONE RINGING]
[RINGING CONTINUES]
[BEEPS]
[RINGING, BEEPING]
[RINGING STOPS]
[CAR ENGINE STARTS]
I should be shocked, but I'm not.
Looks like a call from a dead man's phone spooked her.
Answering a phone that isn't hers isn't enough to convict her.
Not even close. We need much more.
I got Dawkins texts. What texts?
The, uh... Here.
Conversation between Gunnarsen's burner phone and Dawkins' cell
the day that Kai was killed.
She told him where Kai was hiding in the mall.
Date stamp and the time frame line up.
This is good.
Now we just need the connection
between Gunnarsen and Kerlan Pharmaceuticals.
Which means we got two problems.
Kerlans and Gunnarsen.
Yeah, we need to figure out who to go after first.
Oh, hey, bud, would you get some plates?Yup.
Damn.
FLYNN: Oh. There you go. Thanks.
You go.
Should I wash it or... No, sink's fine.
EMILY: I gotta go.
Just leave it. Okay. All right.
I'll see you guys later, okay?
[DOOR CLOSES]
Hey, Dad. Hiya.
[ENGINE STARTS]
[CAR ALARMS BLARE]
MAN: [ON TV] FBI Agent Nick Durand and his teenage son
were buried today at a small South End ceremony
two days after an explosion at their home.
The incident is under investigation
by the FBI and the Boston Police Department.
Bostonians will remember Agent Durand
as one of the FBI's lead investigators
in last year's deadly bombing at the FEMA Building.
He and his son were at home two nights ago when their house tragically caught fire.
Witnesses reported the sound of a loud explosion...
[CONTINUES SPEAKING INDISTINCTLY]
Ready for this?
WARREN: You've got everything you need.
You're stronger than you realize.
Take care of yourself, son. I love you.
Mom.
WARREN: I'll drop the Wrangler off after the shop closes.
Gas tank's full. Ditch it if and when the time comes.
Thanks, Warren. Hey, bud, you take care.
You know we have to do this for your protection, right?
Yeah.
You and your dad wouldn't be safe if we didn't.
I know. Yeah.
What?
I just want to stare at you a little bit longer.
I wanna memorize your face.
How long till I see you again?
I don't know.
You've got the best of me.
You know that, right? You got the very best of me and your dad.
I love you.
I love you.
[SNIFFLES] Always and forever.
NICK: We need to get moving.
Trying to get us as far west as possible before dark.
Uh, yeah. Um...
So your swim gear, everything's in there.
I cleaned out the locker.
Bye, Emily.
Bye, Nick.
[CHUCKLES]
What?
Forgot to pay the water bill.
[LAUGHS] I will take care of it.
Well, that makes me feel much better.
I wasn't sure about all this at first, but,
it's the right thing to do.
I'll keep him safe, Em, I promise.
I know you will.
I think I'm ready to be "Just a dad."
And for the first time in a long, long, it's gonna be...
Gonna be a nice change.
You're a good man, Nick.
We should go.
Finish this.
[ENGINE STARTS]
[DOOR BUZZES]
[DOOR BUZZES]
Jimmy.
Hey, I need you to do something else for me.
Is it legal? No.
Is it dangerous? Yeah, probably.
But it's for a good cause.
BRIGITTE: Without going into too much detail,
I think you'll find we are bullish by our sales and expansion prospects...
[PHONES BUZZING] ...for this coming year and beyond.
You'll see that in the past quarter...
Excuse me, what's going on here?
WOMAN: [ON TV] This week's annual
Kerlan Pharmaceuticals board of directors meeting
devolved into chaos
when information alleging the company's leaders
were involved in illegal medical research and organ harvesting
was sent to board members
before appearing on several social media platforms.
The source of the information is a hacker
who goes by the name of Kai Kusano.
Following the allegations,
an anonymous tip led Boston law enforcement to recover
what appears to be some kind of a biological weapon
at Kerlan Pharmaceuticals American headquarters,
which led to the arrest of the company's CEO, Brigitte Kerlan.
Sources indicate the Kerlan's non-profit charity, Border Outreach,
appears to have been used as a front
to hide the illegal testing of biological weapons on refugees
from the Middle East, Latin America, and Afghanistan.
EMILY: Derek? You were right.
She made a copy of the files and tried to delete them from the servers.
She just accessed Canto's
computer about ten minutes ago.
Okay, where is she now?
Just watching her get into her car in the building CCTV.
EMILY: All right, I'm staked outside the office. I'll tail her.
CROWN: Roger that.
JULIANNE: I'm here. MAN: [ON PHONE] Do you have it?
JULIANNE: I copied everything,
so you can mitigate any problems. Good.
EMILY: She's headed in. I'm going after her.
CROWN: Stand down. Backup is on the way.
JULIANNE: This is the entirety of what they have.
[GUN CLATTERS]
[BOTH GRUNTING]
[COUGHING]
[GRUNTING]
[GROANS]
[MAN GROANS]
[CHOKING]
[BREATHING HEAVILY]
[YELLING]
[SOBBING]
[DOOR OPENS]
I knew you'd come.
You could have killed me on that rooftop. Why didn't you?
I don't know.
Why did you kill Alice Durand?
Rich and powerful people need someone to clean up their mess.
The rest of us are...
Disposable.
Alice was stupid and soft.
She would have sold us out in a minute.
You did all of this just to protect the Kerlans?
You know they'll fight the charges.
And they'll win.
It's over for them.
It's never over for people like the Kerlans.
You should know that by now.
How did you get caught up in all of this?
You're smart.
I'm sure you'll figure it out.
You wanted to be just like them.
Live in a world of privilege.
But in the end, you discovered that you were disposable too.
Isn't that...
Isn't that what everything comes down to in the end,
just wanting to be...
Just wanting to be special?
Not always.
Sometimes it's just about valuing human life.
[DOOR CLOSES, LOCKS]
[BELL TOLLING]
[BIRDS SQUAWKING]
[COCKTAIL SHAKER RATTLES]
[INDISTINCT CHATTER]
EMILY: [SOFTLY] Hi. Hey.
Hey.
Wow.
Have you got a drink for a weary traveler?
Yeah.
I got this postcard in the mail
with no sender.
Just the name Cafe Sofia's written on the back.
Well.
Do you recognize it?
I don't know. I mean, it looks familiar.
Yeah? Yeah.
How about the handwriting?
Uh-huh. Looks a little more familiar.[CHUCKLES]
I'm so glad you came.
Yeah. Me, too.
I got an irresistible invitation.
I like the new look.
Almost didn't recognize you.
Almost.
MAN: [OVER RADIO] Target has made contact.
You're working something right now?
[WHISPERING] Black-market arms dealer.
Oh.
Police haven't been able to track him down.
What can I do? Right now?
Nothing.
But later you could, um...
[IMPERCEPTIBLE]
MAN: Target is on the move.
Alex, I have to go on break.Yeah. Sure.
You feel like working together again?
What do you think?
You sure I can't help you?
You should finish your drink.
It's your favorite.
[DOOR CLOSES]
