(MultiCom Jingle)
(suspenseful music)
- You want to leave your country?
- Yes, I have permission.
- Let me see your papers.
So you are Tania Roskov.
We have been waiting for you.
- What's the matter?
My papers are in order.
- Your papers.
You're on your way to receive this foreign prize?
- This is an international prize for literature
and I'm proud that I have been chosen.
- It's a disguised payment made by the west
to encourage people like you to write
slanderous things about her own people.
Get out.
Now don't make it worse for yourself.
And don't give me any trouble.
- But my papers are stamped.
I have an exit permit.
- It's canceled.
Oh we have had special orders about you.
You're not to leave the country.
- But, I don't believe it.
- We just wanted to know if you would really go.
Guard?
This is Tania Roskov, the literary genius
who reviles her comrades.
Get her out and put her in the truck.
(dramatic music)
- I've got to make quite sure you look smart.
It's not every day my brother's
an international prize winner.
- It's a very minor prize, Dee.
- It's a very great honor.
Contributions to science.
- You know what contribution it was.
The scientist who made himself invisible, accidentally.
The human guinea pig.
- It's time we left for the reception.
(phone rings)
- Peter Brady here.
What's that?
Are you sure?
Right.
The president of the prize committee's on his way up.
- The president?
Surely he should be at the reception by now.
- There's something wrong.
(knocking)
- Oh Mrs. Wilson.
I apologize for bursting in like this
but I had to see your brother.
Mr. Brady, this is most urgent.
Tania Roskov, the chief prize winner,
our guest of honor, she has been arrested.
- Arrested, where?
- At the frontier, they wouldn't let her cross.
- But that's terrible, what has she done?
- Nothing.
They don't need excuses, these people,
they just arrest you and that's the end.
We had hoped to bring honor and fortune
to a very gifted young writer, and what have we done?
Given her enemies a chance to ill treat her and prison her.
It is very tragic.
As a mark of our disapproval, we have decided
to postpone the entire prize giving.
- Professor.
Perhaps we ought to do more than that.
- What do you mean?
- Show me where she is.
- The area here, here on the frontier.
- Oh that's only a few miles away.
- Hm, but it is guarded by armed frontier posts
by minefields, and by patrols.
- Tania Roskov is someone I've admired for a long time.
I don't intend to stand by without
doing something to help her.
- Mr. Brady, thank you.
It is more than I had dared to hope.
(ominous music)
- I should have thought Tania Roskov
that you of all people understood the risks you ran
deviating from the instructions laid down by the
writer's party congress.
Some people might even call you a traitor
and according to your book, my own copy,
the page 78, we brainwash them.
Whatever that may be.
- I have written nothing but the truth.
- I should have enjoyed the time
to discuss what is truth with you, Ms. Roskov,
in this boring frontier village
I have so few casual contacts.
But I'm afraid this is not quite the moment.
It is my unpleasant task
to get a few written statements from you.
First, that your book is a false picture of our country
and second, that you denounce this
international prize as worthless propaganda.
- I refuse to do either.
- It is only a matter of time before you do both.
Well.
If you insist on being heroic.
Guard?
We have specialists here who achieve results their own way.
(ominous music)
- We are very glad you're going to make this attempt,
Mr. Brady, but it's going to be dangerous,
even for Invisible Man.
- [Voiceover] I have to take the risk.
If I have trouble with the wire on the far side,
I'll blow a hole in it.
- The minefield lies over there, between our two countries.
Our man will cut the wire.
After that, we cannot help you.
- [Voiceover] I've got this little instrument to help me.
- Even with mine detector, you must take great care.
Look.
In front of you is the minefield.
- [Voiceover] Well, that'll be the sentry post over there.
- They are guarded always with orders to shoot.
No one has ever managed to cross,
though some poor wretches have tried to escape.
- [Voiceover] This time it's different.
I'm trying to get in.
- You're right.
We brought you to this particular part
because you may be able to get a little
help from the other side.
- [Voiceover] That's the first cheerful thing you've said.
- Through those woods over there
you'll find a party of women working on the roads.
Women laborers are common over there.
One of this party is a middle aged woman called Agasha.
She's in fact put there by us.
Her uniform is clearly marked number 11.
She already has information you are coming.
- [Voiceover] Nice to know I've got
one friend on the other side.
Well he's cut the wire.
I'll get started.
Give me a hand with the pack, will you?
Well goodbye, I'll be seeing you.
- Best of luck, Mr. Brady.
(high pitched whining)
(music swells)
- Hello patrol, hello patrol.
Sentry post one seven two calling central patrol.
Report strange object cited on minefield.
Bearing two two oh crossing towards us.
- Hello one seven two, Captain Bera here.
What do you mean strange object?
Is it a man or an animal or what?
- No captain, it's a stick.
At least it looks like a stick.
It keeps changing direction.
I can't think why it hasn't blown up.
It's coming towards us.
- Let's have a look.
(high pitched whining)
He's right, it is a mine detector, and it's nearly across.
Quick, open fire.
(guns firing)
(explosion booms)
You must have touched off one of the mines.
There it is!
It's a detector all right.
But how did it move?
You're getting jumpy.
- [Voiceover] Psst, hello there.
- So it's true.
There is a man you cannot see.
- [Voiceover] You know what I've come for?
- Tania Roskov has been taken to military headquarters.
- [Voiceover] How do I get there?
- That truck is leaving almost at once for Brot.
You must go with it.
- [Voiceover] Thanks.
I hope that--
- Leave me, I'm being watched.
- [Voiceover] Goodbye.
(dramatic music)
- Come in.
My dear Ms. Roskov, you look distressed.
- Please, please don't concern yourself about me.
I'm all right.
- I didn't want this to happen, you know.
Much better you sign these statements, hm?
- I have already refused.
What makes you think that I should change my mind?
- I don't think I happen to have every sympathy with you.
I like writers who are people of principle.
Great intellects.
Fascinating.
Dostoevsky, Gogol, and now you my dear Ms. Roskov.
Another very gifted artist.
But you do exaggerate our faults a little you know.
- After what has happened to me,
I know that what I wrote is more true than ever.
I shall stand by it.
(phone rings)
- Hello?
Is that you Captain Bera?
What did you say?
A mine detector by itself?
Impossible.
- But I have the pieces with me.
One of my men hit it as it reached the fence.
- But how could it cross by itself?
- It is my opinion it was operated
by some form of remote control.
- Thank you Captain Bera.
Very wise of you to contact me so quickly.
Tell me, are you expecting help
from any friends abroad?
- I have no friends abroad.
I'm a loyal--
- There has been an attempt to cross the frontier
only a few miles away.
Let us put two and two together, shall we?
Yes, exactly as I thought.
Brady, Peter Brady, receiving awards for science.
Do you know who is trying to help you Ms. Roskov?
Brady, the invisible man.
- But that's not true.
- Have it posted immediately that
Tania Roskov is detained here.
Yes, yes, I want people to know.
Yes I want them to speak about it.
Oh and be sure that the prison notices
include Tania's name and cell number.
- [Voiceover] Tania Roskov?
- It's him.
- [Voiceover] Tania Roskov?
Oh no you don't.
- You're a welcome visitor, Mr. Brady.
You mustn't take any chances, Sergeant.
I want him alive.
But turn on the gas sufficiently to render him unconscious.
(coughing)
Not more than half pressure.
(coughing)
(sighs)
(dramatic music)
There.
I imagine the invisible man has had all he can take.
Respirators.
(coughing)
(glass tinkles)
What's that?
Open the door.
Pull him down.
Guard!
Guard!
(tapping)
- [Voiceover] Tania Roskov?
- [Gunzi]] Guard!
- Yes comrade.
- [Gunzi]] We are locked in.
Fetch the master key!
- [Voiceover] Tania Roskov?
Tania Roskov?
- [Voiceover] Who's that?
- [Voiceover] It's Peter Brady.
There's no time to spare.
Come on.
Here we go.
(dramatic music)
(phone ringing)
- Hello?
What, in the truck?
What direction?
The forest road, right.
(alarm blaring)
- Faster, that's the alarm.
- [Voiceover] So nice to meet you, Ms. Roskov.
I've always enjoyed your books.
Jump out and hide in the trees.
Hey, Agasha.
- It's all right.
You must get out at once, the patrols have been warned.
The way to cross the minefield is directly ahead,
through those trees, the way you came over.
- [Voiceover] But this time there's one difference,
I don't have a mine detector.
- I have a plan.
In each of the sentry towers there is a chart
showing the mined area.
You must carry a walkie talkie radio.
I will speak to you from the tower
and give you directions.
- But we have no radio.
- [Voiceover] That won't be difficult for me to get one.
All the patrols carry them.
- Good.
The sooner you get started--
- [Voiceover] But there's one thing
I don't like about your plan.
You can't stand in the tower and give us directions.
You'll be seen.
- There is no other way.
- [Voiceover] I'll give the directions to Tania.
When she's across, I can easily look after myself.
- Oh but that's--
- [Voiceover] There's no time to argue.
Thanks for all you've done.
Get back before they miss you.
Come on, I'll show you where you can get through the wire.
- What now?
- [Voiceover] Don't worry.
This is where we get our walkie talkie.
Here's your radio.
You'll have to wait here.
Keep well down.
Don't start across until you hear me.
If you want to talk to me, press this button.
- I understand.
- [Voiceover] Good luck.
Oh no you don't.
Hello Tania, can you hear me?
- Yes.
- [Voiceover] Start moving.
The ground is clear for about ten yards.
Slowly now.
Stop.
The mine's directly ahead.
Go about three yards slightly left.
Keep going, keep going you're doing fine.
Stay there.
Now turn right.
Keep going for about three yards.
You're clear, go ahead.
- That's not the sentry's voice.
There is a voice over the radio commisar.
It must be Brady.
- Where is it?
- He must be in the tower.
He's directing her across the minefield.
- Now take one of your men to the tower and get rid of him.
Come on.
- [Voiceover] Keep going.
You're doing fine, keep going.
Stop.
Watch it here.
- Over there.
- [Voiceover] Tania, get down.
- It's Tania Roskov, open fire!
(guns firing)
Fire at the ground around her.
It's likely to blow up.
(guns firing, explosions booming)
- Hello, hello Peter?
Peter what can I do?
They're blowing up the mines.
- [Voiceover] Stay there.
I'll see to these boys.
(guns firing)
- The sentry box, he's up there.
- Start crawling Tania, straight ahead.
(guns firing)
Turn right.
- The girl, she's nearly there.
Don't mind me, get the girl.
(guns firing)
- [Voiceover] This is it, Tania.
Run for it!
Drop your arms, get over there.
Go on, move.
Drop your gun.
Get in that corner.
(dramatic music)
You too.
Nice work, Tania, you've done it.
I'll be seeing you.
- Ah good evening, Mrs. Wilson.
We are so sorry that your brother
was not back for the reception.
- Oh yes, have you any news of him?
I'm still terribly worried.
- Don't worry, Ms. Roskov.
Peter'll be all right.
He can come back any way he likes.
In all probability he'll take the train.
- You're dead right, Dee.
First class from Brava on the trans Siberian branch line.
- Pete!
- Mr. Brady!
Oh I'm so glad that you are back.
Professor Kenig collected your prize.
Do you mind professor?
This is a prize that that would be honored to give.
It's not merely for science, Mr. Brady.
As far as I'm concerned, it is for everything.
- [Voiceover] Thank you Ms. Roskov.
