[Ever Night]

[Episode 02]

So, Old Ma...

You send me off with them,

like a lamb to a tiger?

You should leave this Blue Lake Woodcutter here a few more years.

You want to go to the Academy, right?

They have a Cultivator at upper See-through level.

Lu Qingchen.

You'd have heard of him.

A Cultivator at See-through level.

I'll go.

You want to go? Only if I agree.

Princess' safety concerns Great Tang.

With even half a misstep,

your death is worth nothing.

Right! I'm a general; I direct war.

I don't help you don armour.

Begone.

Thanks, General.

[Chang'an - Tang Empire Capital]

[Tang Empress, Xia Tian]

Who is it?

[Tang Great General, Xia Hou]

So you're here.

How are you?

You're a Cultivator, yet got white hair.

You left without turning back.

So my hair went white for you.

You come at risk of death.

Princess Li Yu has escaped Golden Horde.

Her safe return is good.

If she does, you won't be safe.

She wants you dead.

His Majesty will protect me.

Him?

I doubt he can protect himself.

Don't worry. I can protect myself.

I won't let anyone hurt you.

So let her come.

This guide dissatisfies you?

I want a skilled guide,

not one dreaming of Cultivating,

and speaking coarsely.

Ning Que is young,

yet in these last 2 years in the grasslands,

he killed many bandits.

Ability to kill doesn't make a good guide.

We've 300 troops.

Though Ning Que hasn't killed the most foes,

he can guarantee survival.

In the fiercest battle encounters, he can survive.

It's guaranteed.

Besides, he'll put on a good show to qualify for Academy entry.

I am here.

Princess, don't be too anxious.

I'll trust you.

Thanks, Princess.

Your Majesty–

The Soothsayer came urgently.

- Let him in. - Yes.

Li Qingshan greets you.

Soothsayer, it's late. What's urgent? [Emperor Li Zhongyi]

Your Majesty.

I just performed a divination.

I fear Princess had problems on her journey.

I request Your Majesty to send people to her aid.

No need to worry.

His Majesty sent men; they're now at Northern Pass.

Princess is safe.

Whoever stops her will be killed.

Yes.

[Zhuo'er]

Sang Sang.

Coming to the capital?

Young Master.

When you're at the barracks, bring back oil.

This door has creaked for months.

The sound is annoying.

Stop swinging that broken door.

I told you I go to the capital tomorrow for the Academy test.

Even if we leave, other people will still live here.

The capital.

Must we go?

We can't stay in Wei City forever.

Old Ma said the world is large; it's time we saw it.

I heard Chang'an is huge.

It has many people.

It's big, but not to fear.

We'll keep old habits. I'll deal with people outside;

you keep the house.

Then tell me, in the capital,

how many taels (silver) is meat, vegetables and rice per month?

When you enter the Academy, you'll need new clothes.

What if we have guests?

Like classmates.

I must have new clothes, too.

Roughly, that's 10 taels.

Ten taels.

Just ten taels.

I heard of Chang'an's famed Victory Restaurant.

A meal there costs this much.

Two taels?

Two taels?

20 taels.

Twenty?

Taels? For one meal?

I won't go.

Not just restaurants; there's the Palace.

Palace ladies don't worry about clothing or food.

Guess what they eat.

I guess, East Palace meat pie; West Palace green onions.

The meat pie is ocean large; green onions are mountain high.

So smart, Sang Sang.

Sang Sang, meat pies so late?

Talk tomorrow.

Chief.

Don't move. Your wounds are bad.

Here, drink the medicine.

I'll repay you for saving me.

[Yulong Gang Chief, Chao Xiaoshu]

You're in my Yulong Gang. We're Brothers.

Chief.

I...

Why'd you show up there?

Why'd you chase that guy?

If you don't want to tell me, you needn't.

I'll just say he's too strong.

You'll never match him.

Some problems aren't just mine.

Get well soon.

Oh my...

76 taels,

3 coppers.

4 cents!

If not for the Academy test, I won't sell that horse.

It eats too much.

You don't eat? Careful, I may sell you.

I eat less than you.

Sang Sang. Got a chill again?

Here, drink wine.

Wine to drink, nothing to fear.

Young Master, we share food, drink and items

so why don't you get chills?

If I did, who'd warm your bed?

Still cold?

Come here.

Feet.

So warm.

Picking up a girl like you gave me 8 lifetimes' bad luck.

Talk about it after 8 lifetimes.

Go to sleep.

You sleep too. I'm not cold anymore.

Who'll warm your feet?

Sleep.

Not sure why,

but you remind me of my Bro Zhuo'er.

I wonder how Little Black is.

Young Master, will you take it to the capital?

Want to go with me to the capital?

Or stay here in the wild?

Got it.

[Ning Que]

Sang Sang has grown taller.

[Ning Que]

[Xiling Peach Mountain]

There are three obsessed Lady Cultivators-

Dao Addict,

Book Addict,

Flower Addict.

Talk of obsessions

is ignorant secular language.

Long Qing needn't heed it.

To some people, Long Qing is only a layman.

Can you not go to the Wildland?

Not so.

You know it's a trap, but jump into it.

Luo Kedi,

Justice Hall Chief, with Cultivation mastery,

strongest of Xiling's young generation,

envies you.

Once you entered Xiling, he was your enemy.

Now you're being favoured by Light Hall

and called Son of Light,

he'll hate you more.

I heard northern Wildland has a Snow Lotus.

I'll bring you one.

(Lu Chenjia - one of three lady Chi/Addicts)

Go!

Go!

General Ma.

Go!

Ning Que, you left like this.

Not saying goodbye?

Disrespectful.

General. I receive the order to act as Princess' guide.

I leave today for Chang An.

~no need to confess~

~the curtain of night has lifted~

~success or failure~

~don't fear, look ahead~

You'll be a guide, okay.

Do it well. Don't fool around.

Yes, sir.

Study well.

If you don't enter the Academy, don't come back.

I can't be let down.

I'll come back with first place.

I'll make you proud.

Get going.

Let this accompany you.

Let's agree- don't grow old.

Don't die. Wait for me to bring you honour.

Yes.

~glorious eclipse~

No crying as I go.

~I've been to an oasis~

Leave now. Get going.

~I kissed rivers; Spring comes and goes~

~I saw the sea of clouds~

Though I don't comprehend most of what you say, you studied in Xiling.

~I've called stars~

~like a glorious eclipse~

~I've been to an oasis~

~with no border and no shore~

~I kissed the rivers~

~Spring comes and goes~

Get lost!

Go trouble others!

Xiling Cavalryman, Zi Mo, assigned to go with you.

Please set off, Your Highness.

Let's go.

[Tang Empire - Northern Mountains Pass]

Princess gave orders to set up camp here.

What's wrong?

This isn't a good site.

We can't rest here. We need to go now by Hua Xi Road.

You're just a guide. How can you give orders?

You must heed me on this!

Loser.

Grand Priest, I did as you told me. [Xiling Justice Hall]

Long Qing won't return from his trip.

I'll let you handle him.

And the other matter?

Priest Wu Ming is at Peach Mountain.

I can't act rashly.

Useless!

Our Justice Hall oversees Xiling Calvary,

assassins and spies, totalling millions of people.

Why fear that mere Wu Ming?

Wu Ming must die.

Light Hall priests must die.

I want Light Hall to vanish forever.

Grand Priest, Xiling's 3 Halls have ancient origins.

Light Hall has strong foundations. To eradicate them

is difficult.

Wei Guangming has been in Serene Pavilion 15 years.

He clearly sinned against God, yet has the people's support.

Why?

Justice Hall does God's will

and eradicates heresy.

Yet people despise us. Why?

If our plot is exposed, how do we justify ourselves?

Shrine Hierarch will punish us.

Remember, the winner rules.

In this battle, whoever wins represents Light.

I see.

[Li Qingshan - State Preceptor/ High Priest of Dao South Gate Temple]

General Xia Hou, how are you?

Tang State Preceptor, it's been a while.

Since you've in the capital, why not visit me?

Preceptor invited me so sincerely, how can I refuse?

Sang Sang, let's go.

Go?

This is the way to Northern Pass. It's unsafe to stop here.

Or a few enemy horsemen can destroy us.

- Then why not tell them? - I did.

They won't listen.

Idiots.

Will marauders really come?

In our years at Mount Min, my intuition was never wrong.

That idiot lived on Great Plains for 2 years, yet hasn't learned.

She has no idea.

But if we just leave, what happens when they pursue us?

You're General Ma's assigned guide.

Sang Sang, always remember-

For us to live isn't easy.

We must give our all to survive.

Persevere in adversity to live.

We can't die so easily.

Hold it.

Where are you two going?

Not thinking of deserting?

You're just a maid. What's your right to ask?

You're really a hoodlum.

Ambush!

It's your turn, Preceptor.

Attack!

Kill!

Step-Mom!

Step-Mom!

Xiao Man!

- Want to die?! - Whatever! Move aside!

Xiao Man!

Don't move if you want to live.

Xiao Man is in the carriage.

Young Master!

Xiao Man.

You're so resolute in tasks.

But if you want to break through the guards, it won't be easy.

Young Master!

Lu Qingchen?

You're indeed astute.

He gave up his sword to Cultivate, and attained See-through level.

Could his journey to the plains be an adventure?

Bro Lu has been with Princess in the north for 2 years.

He would see new scenery.

It would stimulate his insight.

Only, General won't expect an Academy disciple to be a pawn.

A previous Academy student actually joined Demon Sect.

Demon Sect.

An Academy alumni uses Demonism?

Don't you fear Heaven's wrath?

If one is righteous, why fear Demonism?

If I sank into evil, I'll be eternally damned.

Demon Sect's path is unlike other sects' ways.

They absorb Nature's Qi (energy) into their bodies by force,

intersecting with Heaven and Earth.

Human bodies are like ants.

There's only one result of absorbing Qi by force.

The body explodes in death.

Princess! Leave here now!

Xiao Man, hurry.

Hurry, Xiao Man.

Sang Sang! Open the Umbrella!

Who's that?

Pardon me.

If you hadn't focused so hard on this chess match,

I'd have had no chance to best you.

Farewell.

Grandmaster Lu!

Grandmaster Lu, are you okay?

Luckily, I'm fine.

- Are you okay? - Princess, relax.

I'm unhurt.

Then let's leave immediately.

- Master, are you okay? - Someone changed this "game".

Someone sent by the Emperor?

This person doesn't 'xiu xing' (Cultivate Qi).

I can't accurately perceive it.

But that person isn't simple.

Princess is trying to go home. What if...

Mingchi, remember this.

Heaven Dao South Gate Temple, though a branch of Xiling...

also belongs to South Gate of Tang Empire.

We follow His Majesty's wishes.

In power struggles in the Court,

struggles over the throne,

South Gate never participates.

Your disciple understands.

That person's identity is unknown.

But his arrival will cause a great storm...

in the capital.

Young Master, have soup

while it's hot.

Thanks for help earlier.

May I ask from whom you learned killing skills?

Killing skills are learned killing.

At your age, no way you killed more people than we did.

A border soldier's biggest income is from killing bandits.

We call it 'chopping firewood'.

Boxwood bow? Three podao (broadswords)?

He must be...

Blue Lake Woodcutter.

[Ever Night]

~Hey, I can only say sorry~

~You, who've forgotten time, look a bit lost~

~You seem faraway, in front of me~

~Time blinks by~

~Take it easy~

~Life is still the same~

~Hey, let me change the ending~

~Yet I can cover it up only a short while~

~Don't obsess or say sorry~

~Loser just treats winner~

~Better not meet rather than cry on parting~

~Night is long and dark~

~Don't leave regrets~

~I've seen right, wrong, gratitude, grudges, words, acts~

~I risk danger, desperate for you~

~Umbrella in old Chang'an~

~Night nears; talismans burn~

~Fight till all is gone in chaos and darkness~

~See us blaze through darkness, changing Heaven and Earth~

~Spur the horses forward~

~Geese fly south before snow~

~Get drunk at a warm coast~

~Under slashes of the sword, we love each other still~

~Under slashes of the sword, we love each other still~
