- [Sid] I feel fine, really Tom.

- [Tom] I'm telling you no!

- I'm okay!

I wanna go with you Tom!

- You ain't going nowhere.

You'll be best laying in
bed you've got a fever.

- I feel fine, I tell ya I'm
gonna be well enough to go.

Honest I am!

- You were told to stay
put by doc Mitchell.

- But I'm really feeling much
better, feel my head see?

- You're still sick.

Maybe you'll be able to go
to the picnic next time.

Now rest yourself in bed quiet like.

- I want to go now, I want to go now,

I want to go now I want to go!

- You're acting like a kid, Sid.

- Tom, why aren't you downstairs?

Come join us and eat breakfast
or you're going to be late.

- Okay but Sid still thinks
that he's coming to the picnic.

- No Sid you have a bad fever.

You know you'll probably catch

your death of cold if you go outside.

I think you should go
downstairs to breakfast

and I'll take care of Sid for a while.

- Well, all right.

- Come on Sid, it's okay don't cry.

- But Mary, I really
wanted to go to the picnic.

- Well I do know children should have fun,

but I declare it's trouble

the very idea of a picnic
with only three grownups

to watch over so many children.

I don't think you should be going.

- But aunt Polly, you
know just how important

the very last picnic of
the summertime is to me.

- Yes but I do fret you know.

You keep yourself out of
trouble Tom Sawyer, ya hear?

You're always up to something

and I'm gonna be worried
until you get back home.

- Oh I'll be good, I will,
and that's a promise.

Aunt Polly, no need to fret
and you got my word on it.

I'll do exactly like you tell me to.

I'll mind all the
grownups and be a good boy

'cause you know how much I want
to go, don't you aunt Polly?

- You better be good, 'cause if you

get into trouble I'll hear about it.

(lively fiddle music)

- [Boys] Wait Tom, wait!

- [Boy] Oh, faster!

(shouting)

- [Becky] Hi Tom.

- Ready for the picnic?

- Oh I can't wait.

I was so excited about going to the picnic

I couldn't sleep at all last night.

- Me neither.

- I'm so happy, is Sid coming Tom?

- No he can't come, he's
still at home sick in bed.

- Oh that's unfortunate.
- Yeah, let's go.

- Okay!
(giggles)

- All right now children, no shoving.

The boat's not leaving
until everyone's on board.

- Come on now, move inside,
move inside everybody.

There's plenty of room.

- Someone left their lunchbox behind.

Whose lunchbox is this?

- Pardon me, excuse me, pardon me,

excuse me, pardon me, excuse me.

- Hey Ben aren't you coming to the picnic?

- Yeah but I can't find my lunchbox

so I'm going to go look for it.

- You'll miss the boat, Ben, hurry.

- Ben doesn't this look
like your lunchbox?

- Why yeah, that's it.

- Here it is, Ben.

How did you lose it?

- There must have been a good reason.

Let's see if I can remember.

But I'm afraid that St. Petersburg sun

baked out my memory ma'am.

Thanks for finding it, bye-bye ma'am.

(pleasant music)

(laughing)

(whistle blows)

- [Tom Voiceover] It was the last picnic

of our summer vacation.

I was thinking I needed an adventure

before going back to school.

Huck Finn like always was
left out of the party.

(yawns)

- Well, what's there to do?

- [Man] Heave ho!

(grunting)

- How's it going up there?

- It's all done now.

- Whee, whee!

- Come on Becky!
- Come on Becky!

(laughing, shouting)

- Yay!

(panting)

- Here it goes, yeah!

(pleasant music)

Ah!

There.

(snorts)

Hey!

Liver and cheese ain't
one of my favorites, Ben.

(groaning)

- No no no no no!

(sighs)

How come you stole my sandwich?

- If you eat all your food now

what'll you do when lunchtime comes?

- Well everybody's got a
whole bunch of food with 'em

and I can snitch some of it.

Would you give me some of your sandwich

since you took mine Tom?

- Okay, fair's fair.

- Well, what now?

- Well first thing planned
is the square dancing,

then I reckon it's the treasure hunt.

- Then some lunch maybe.

- We'll have time to explore before we go.

- What kind of exploring Tom?

- Adventure kind of exploring.

- Huh, hey I want to go too.

- You mean you ain't afeared Ben?

- Huh?

You mean it's something scary?

- I'm going in the McDougal Cave.

(gasps)

- The forbidden cave you mean?

- So do you want to come with me?

- But Tom we'll get into trouble

if we go in there without a grownup.

- Have you ever been inside the cave?

- Yeah with my dad.

It was dark and scary.

- Did you go all the way inside of it?

- No Tom, nobody's supposed to.

- Once I went into the
entrance of that big cave

when I was with my aunt Polly.

Now I want to go in deeper.

- It's black as night in there.

- So what?

I brung some candles with me.

- But Tom, some caves have no way out.

We could get lost and trapped
and never be seen again.

- I ain't afeared, Ben.

- Well I don't want to go
in there without a grownup.

- Oh, so you don't want
to come along with me.

- No Tom, and I really don't think

you should go into that cave alone either.

It's too dangerous.

There are big dark holes filled with water

and you could fall into one.

You could drown!

- Well all right, maybe I won't
go exploring after all, Ben.

- Good Tom, I'm relieved to hear that.

(bell rings)

- Hey, the dance is starting.

It's the signal to begin.
- Yep.

- Come on everyone, gather round.

(cheering)

(fiddle music)

(kids chattering)

- Joe, that looks real good.

Could I have a bite of it
you think, just for a taste?

- Well just a bite, here.

- Much obliged.

Who's next?

- McDougal Cave's not
much father is it Tom?

- No, the opening's just a short way

right over the top of the hill.

Are you sure you won't come in with me?

- We'd be back on time wouldn't we?

- We have lots of time before
we have to head back home.

We'll explore the cave, be back on time

and no one will ever know
that we were gone, Becky.

- Do you think it's going to be beautiful?

Hope so.

- Well, we can look through the opening

in the gate to see if it is, all right?

- I think that maybe I'll go in.

Oh, is it locked up Tom?

It's so dark inside I can't see a thing.

- Want to go in?

- [Becky] Gee, it feels
like it's cold in there.

- Come on Becky, it's
not really that cold.

- Tom I'm scared!

- Well then you can just wait for me here.

Or you can go back all
alone to the picnic okay?

- I'm going too!

- Attagirl.

- Don't let go of me.
- I won't.

Be careful you don't lose it now.

- Gee how pretty.

- Come on Becky, let's look around.

- Ooh, oh what's that sound Tom?

- It's running water, Becky.

Let's keep on walking and
maybe we'll see a waterfall.

- Hey, look!

- Wow, look at them stagamagits.

- [Becky] They're such funny shapes.

- I heard it took hundreds of years

for them to grow like that.

Ain't that some pumpkins.

(yawns)

- Well what in the world's
gone wrong with me?

I've been fishing right here
all morning and caught nothing.

(cawing)
(yells)

(dramatic music)

(yells)

I gotta get out of here!

(yelling)

- What, calm down Huck and
tell me again what you saw.

Do you know who the dead man was,

the one you saw by the river?

- That guy's Injun Joe's friend.

He's the fellow that taught me that song

the other day back at the haunted house.

- You sure about that?

- Yes sir, Injun Joe called him Gil.

- Sounds to me like
maybe they had a fight.

Well Huck, I suggest you come with me

and show me where it happened.

- Do you reckon Injun Joe killed that guy?

- It's possible, appears Injun Joe's

been hanging around here after all.

(pleasant music)

- In my whole life I bet I've

never seen such a big waterfall.

- Me too, come on Becky I want
to get a closer look at it.

(gasps)

- Hey lookie here how the candlelight

dances on the water, nice huh?

- Oh how beautiful.

(laughing)

- What's that?

Hey Becky look, there
are some steps down here.

- Where do you think they lead to Tom?

- [Tom] Your guess is as good as mine.

- Let's go down and see
what's at the bottom.

- Well I'm gonna go take a look

but I reckon you better
just wait back here for me.

It looks like it might be
dangerous going down there.

- I don't want to wait here.

- It ain't no place for a girl.

- But I want to go down
there with you exploring.

- Well all right then.

Here you go, watch your step now.

- Okay.

Listen.

- [Tom] Mhmm, running water.

- It's getting louder now.

- Hey look at that!

Okay watch your head now, Becky.

Y'all right?

Hey.

- Gosh Tom, this looks
like an ancient palace

from some long lost city.

I've never seen anything so beautiful.

Look at those lovely pools of water.

They look like mirrors.

Ah, it's freezing!

- Let's go look around some more.

- Yes.

(suspenseful music)

(squeaking)

- [Tom] Don't panic Becky,
I won't let 'em get ya.

Shoo shoo!

- Ah help Tom help!

Get them away help help Tom help!

(yelling)

Stop Tom make 'em stop, make 'em stop.

- This way.

Don't let go of my hand.

In there, quick.

Becky, you all right?

Oh no the candle!

They knocked it out of
my hand, it's going out.

- [Becky] Oh Tom!

(cawing)

- You sure this is Injun's friend?

- Mhmm, I'd never forget him.

- Well by the looks of him I say

he ain't been dead for too long.

That means that...

- Injun Joe killed him, didn't he?

- Maybe so, anyhow we gotta
round up a search party.

- I know!

- How's that Huck?

- He said he'd go hide out in the cave.

- You wouldn't be mistaken
about that son now would ya?

- Uh-uh.

I tell you we'll find him right there.

- You don't say, the cave huh?

McDougal Cave.

- [Tom Voiceover] Lucky for me
and Becky, I had some matches

and I was able to relight the candle

though we had no idea which way to go.

- Tom can we get out if we go this way?

- All we can do is hope.

- Tom, I'm afraid we'll get lost

if we keep going in this direction.

Let's go back the way we came

where the spring was at
the entrance to the cave.

Isn't that a good idea Tom?

Tom please can't we go back?

- I can't remember which way we came in.

(gasps)

I want to go back and try to
find that spring again, Becky.

But I don't know which one
of these tunnels to take.

- Tom.

- Now Becky don't you fret none.

We're gonna find our way out.

Let's try this one, it looks familiar

but then all these tunnels
look familiar don't they?

(triangle dinging)

(kids chattering)

- Come on everybody, gather round!

It's almost time to go!

(suspenseful music)

(crying)

- We're trapped in here.

- Now that ain't true.

There's gotta be a path
that leads us out of here

and we're gonna find it.

- But we've been walking
back and forth for hours

and I'm scared we'll never
find the entrance again.

- I was thinking the exact same thing,

but I couldn't let on
that I was scared too

'cause I had to help
Becky keep her courage up.

Don't cry now, I'm gonna get
us out of here I promise Becky.

Besides, they're bound
to come looking for us

when we don't show up back at the picnic.

You don't have a thing to worry about.

Let's just keep looking for the way out.

Come on, we have to keep on moving.

We ain't doing no good just
sitting around here worrying.

- I can't walk anymore.

- Okay, I'm tired too Becky.

We'll sit down for a while.

- Oh.
- Now what's wrong?

- It's hopeless, no one is
out there searching for us.

- How do you know?

- No one from the picnic
knows that we left

and came here into the cave, Tom.

They won't search for us here.

We're lost forever.

- I didn't think of that.

(crying)

- Say has anybody seen Tom lately?

(kids chattering)

- Doesn't anybody have any
idea where Becky has gone to?

(kids chattering)

- Now we're going to form search parties

to look for both of them since
they're probably together.

It's a lot of work, so everyone's

going to have to help us out.

- Miss Anne?

- Ben, do you know where they've gone to?

- I believe I saw the two of them

walking up to the entrance
of the McDougal Cave ma'am.

- Oh no, not up to the cave!

- The candle's going out,
have you got any more?

- A few, but I've been trying to save 'em.

- What do you mean?

I'm afraid of the dark, you
mustn't let the candle go out.

- Okay I'll light another one for ya.

Yeah what is it?

- I thought I heard
someone calling our names.

- Really?

(dripping)

(ominous music)

I can only hear the sound of water.

- Well I'm sure that I heard something.

- Well, we can't just
sit here forever Becky.

We gotta go and try to find the way out.

Now come on.

- But if someone comes
looking for us in this cave

they won't be able to find us

if we just keep wandering around.

- You stay here Becky okay?

(gasps)

- You'd leave me here alone Tom?

- No Becky, this here's a big kite string.

Now you hold on to one
end and I'll unwind it

while I explore around for the entrance.

Okay you got that?

- But I--

- Hold it, real tight like this okay?

(sniffles)

- Well okay, only do
leave a candle for me.

- Mhmm, don't fret none.

I'm gonna find the way.

- Ted were they in there?

- It's hopeless, I went as
far as I could and called

but there was no answer at all, Bob.

We don't have any candles
so we can't go in.

We'll have to wait for the others.

(groans)

- Hot hot hot!

That's gonna smart a while.

(groaning)

Doggone it.

(groaning)

Hey.

Oh boy, we're saved at last.

Hello!

Oh no!

(ominous music)

Just when I reckoned we was
finally gonna be rescued

from a fate worse than death,

something even worse was
coming around that corner,

Injun Joe, heading right for me

and me with nowhere to hide.
