Fifteen Years of Waiting for Migratory Birds

Episode 5

Li Li, is something troubling you?

Do you have problems with your homework?

If you need help with homework, you can ask Qianren.

That's okay.

Children don't have that many problems.

Here, eat a piece of meat.

Qianren, you have a piece, too. Look at how skinny you are.

Ms. Li, you are so thoughtless.

You clearly know that I don't like to eat meat fat, but you gave me such a big piece.

Strange.

Why didn't I know that you don't eat meat fat?

I'm not eating anymore.

Meat fat is meat fat! I don't like eating it. Even if I have to starve, I won't eat it!

You little rascal!

Your heart is like ice no matter how well others treat you!

Old Liu, don't be mad.

Qianren is angry because of his mom.

When it comes to his morals,

Qianren is still a filial child.

Filial children have to have manners when talking to adults!

- I should've told him earlier— - Old Liu, let's eat now.

Let's talk more about it later.

I'm not eating anymore. I'm going out to the balcony to smoke.

Why are you smoking again? I thought you stopped smoking a while ago.

Isn't it about time since we've had a discussion?

Talk about what? About us?

Go tattletale. Go tell your mom.

Or you can go tell my dad. Whatever pleases you.

Because you're always trying to find fault,

you've tired them out,

especially Mr. Liu.

I heard that he stopped smoking for a long time.

But after you left today,

he smoked for a long time at the balcony.

All humans have something they're bothered by.

My dad can solve his problems by smoking, but me?

I can't help but to meet people I hate everyday.

Am I not more pitiful than he?

Is your heart made of steel?

Let's talk about us now.

I've warned you before.

I told you that if you were to move into my house, I'd have 10,000 methods of making you and your mom leave.

How's that? Do you want me to hide your dolls in a more interesting place?

To help you exercise your brain and strength.

Everyone has something precious to them.

If you want to threaten others, first look to see if you have weaknesses.

Try touching my things again.

A new year in a new place.

Beginning a new life.

There will be smiles, there will be tears.

This is the meaning of growing up.

Year of 2003

Emergency notice: Because of the SARS,

starting this week, all classes will stop.

All students may study at home.

It will be announced soon when classes resume.

In addition, may all students

before 7PM every night, report your temperature to your class representative.

The class representative will then report the results to each homeroom teacher.

Don't forget to report your temperatures tonight, you two.

Don't worry. We're going to play soccer now. We'll report it after we finish.

Didn't Teacher Gao already say that...

- What are you doing? - Breathing the same air and fate as you.

Why do you always play such lame jokes?

It's that way.

Let's go.

Hello?

38.7 degrees Celsius.

Pei Shangxuan, do you know the etiquette when calling others on the phone?

Do you have a fever? Are you coughing?

Why are you nervous?

Are you afraid of me passing it on to you after breathing on you this afternoon?

Can't you be a bit more serious? I'm caring about you here.

I read it incorrectly. It's 36.7 degrees Celsius.

Do you think this is funny?

Goodbye.

She dares to hang up on me?

Pei Shangxuan, stop playing. I know it's you.

I'm sorry, Auntie.

Li Li, Xiao Jun has a high fever today.

Her temperature is 39 degrees Celsius. I'm on my way to bringing her to the hospital.

She kept telling me to report her temperature to you.

How did it become like that?

Which hospital are you guys at?

Li Li, why are you here? It's so late.

Auntie, I'm here for Xiao Jun. I'm very worried.

Even though Xiao Jun is sick from a virus, she'll get better after some days at home.

Look at you. You didn't even wear a mask coming here.

Does your mom know that you're here?

It's fine, Auntie. Don't worry.

That's fine. It's great that you're here. I'll go get some water for Xiao Jun.

She has to take her medicine. Can you help me look after her?

- Is that fine? - Yeah.

I'm going now.

- Xiao Jun! - Li Li.

Why are you here?

I was so anxious when I heard you had a fever. Did your fever go down a little?

Cover yourself well with the blankets. Don't get cold.

It's already difficult for you to come here just to meet me.

Don't worry about me too much.

Li Li, why aren't you wearing a mask?

You know I have a fever. What if it gets to you?

I'm going to be fine. I'm also not going to let anything happen to you.

Look.

Do you remember these dolls that you gave me for my birthday?

Look at the words. [Li and Jun]

You sewed it on?

To be honest, I wanted to tell you sorry since a long time ago.

There were so many times when the words were right there, but I just couldn't open my mouth.

It's also my fault.

You're obviously my best friend,

but I was so afraid that you hated me, so I didn't even talk to you.

I didn't hate you. I was only...

I was only pitying myself...

I know that I'm ugly and bad at studying.

I always make you take care of me.

I'm only a burden to you.

Don't talk like that.

It's all my fault.

Will you forgive me?

Forgive me for always saying that you're immature.

And that you're silly for looking up to idols.

To be honest, that incident involving Pei Shangxuan, I really don't—

That incident really doesn't mean anything anymore.

I admit, I did treat Pei Shangxuan like an idol,

but...

but I was just star-struck.

I've thought a lot while I was sick.

I've realized that during these important times,

the one I think about isn't him,

but you.

But I never thought that you'd come here so quickly.

Li Li,

you must never be sick. If you were to get sick because of me, I'd feel so bad.

Don't talk about such unlucky things.

We're friends for life. If anything bad happens, we'll take care of it together.

I'll peel some tangerines for you.

Look. Let's eat the bigger one.

Year of 2016

Driver Qian, safety first. You should still drive safer.

Do you have to say everything opposite to what I say?

Do you know who he went to meet?

We're all adults, who can't he meet?

That person is different.

When Pei Shangxuan met her,

he met his life's jinx.

Jinx?

Hello, Sir. May I ask who you're looking for?

I'm looking for Han Yichen.

Are you looking for Director Han? Do you have an appointment?

I do not, but I have something important to ask her.

- Xiao Zhang, are you done with the contract for Director Wang? - Yes, I'm done.

Pei Shangxuan?

Year of 2003

Look, look. It's a pretty girl.

- That's Han Yichen. She was in my school before. - Li Li!

She was a pretty girl then, too.

Hurry and ask her. Hurry.

Classmate, let me help you.

- I'm fine, thank you. I'll do it myself. - Okay.

Don't worry, it only wants you to wait a little.

- Thank you. - You're welcome.

Look, Sister Mei Qing. Come on in Li Li.

Li Li, go play with Yichen.

Yichen, look who came.

Yichen, you've grown again.

Give your greetings to Auntie.

This child.

Here, Li Li. Let's eat some sweets.

- Thank you. - You're so polite.

Yichen, you have to learn from her.

Did you know? Her grades are especially good.

She's always first whenever she takes a test.

- Don't just play everyday, okay? - Okay.

- This child. - Yichen's mother.

That... I came here today...

I...I want to...

I know, I know what you're talking about.

Let's leave them alone and go discuss it over there.

Hey, don't think you're all that because you have good grades.

I'm prettier than you. No matter what you have,

I can have it all. But the things I'll have,

you'll never have.

Sister Li Li!

Sister Li Li,

you still haven't changed your natural style.

I haven't changed.

You two know each other?

Yeah, she's my cousin.

Students,

I want to introduce to you all a new member to our class.

Let's welcome Han Yichen.

Han Yichen, introduce yourself to the class.

Hello, everyone, my name is Han Yichen.

Han meaning Korea, Yi meaning think, and Chen meaning dawn.

Even though my surname is Han, I'm not from Korea.

Oh, right! I also have a cousin here.

Her name is Li Li.

Is she your cousin?

She's one of those extremely disconnected relatives.

She's prettier than the girl in Class 8.

The guys in our class are all staring at her.

What a disgrace to men.

I hope you're better than they are.

Li Li.

On the blackboard, which formula was used

to solve for the shape's volume?

Are you unable to answer the question or were you just not listening at all?

Sit down and listen to the lesson.

Kick the ball.

What's happening?

Next!

It's okay. Thanks, everyone.

You guys only crowded around. Didn't you know to put the fire out?

Leave, leave.

Leave!

- What a coincidence. - What a coincidence.

What book are you looking for? I'll help you.

I'm just looking around. There's nothing I'm looking for especially.

At school, we're always doing practice problems.

We also have to look at practice books after school.

My head is about to start hurting.

Then look at some more relaxing things while you're here.

What about you?

I'm like you.

At school, we have to do practice problems.

I also have to look at practice books after school.

My head is about to become bigger.

That's why whenever I'm here, I read more relaxing and entertaining things.

Like mangas. Am I not right?

Saint Seiya!

No way. You also like reading that?

Am I not allowed to? I've read every single book of the series.

But don't you girls all like to read mangas like

Sailor Moon?

Then what you're saying is that I'm not like any ordinary girl?

No, you're definitely not like an ordinary girl.

Hello, your total is ¥180. (About $27.63 USD)

No way. You're going to buy the entire set in one purchase?

You can rent these. It's cheaper that way.

I like collecting the things that I like.

You didn't read these either, right? I can lend them to you.

You probably won't reject a girl's good intentions, right?

Of course, I won't.

It's too heavy, I won't be able to carry it.

What does that even account to? You have me. Let's go.

- What else do you like reading? - Me?

I'm home. Thank you.

- Be careful. See you tomorrow. - Bye.

- Bye. - Bye.

Yichen, come and sit next to me.

Tell me how your new school is.

It's fine. The students there are interesting.

Now that I think about it, what a coincidence it is. I called Auntie Mei Qing and apparently

Li Li is also at that school.

Li Li's grades are good. She can also help you with your studies.

I can feel relaxed.

Is Sister Li Li so good

to the point where you think that your daughter isn't up to her level?

Why are you saying that to me?

I'm joking.

Sister Li Li is very capable,

that's why I'll use her as my role model.

If she can do it, I'll try my best to do it.

What she has, I will also have.

You rascal. Good girl.

- I'm going upstairs. - Go ahead.

Shangxuan,

a bowling alley just opened near my school.

There's a 60% discount. Do you want to go with me?

Yeah, but it's going to be boring with just us two.

Is there anyone else who wants to come?

- I want to go. - I also want to go.

Then I'll join, too.

Let's go together.

Yichen, what about you?

Sure, but I'm a bit bad at it.

You guys better not laugh at me.

Li Li, let's go, too.

I'm not going. I have to go home and finish my homework.

Li Li, let's go together. It's fun.

You can do your homework whenever, but discounts don't wait for anyone.

Also, joining an extracurricular activity is good for you.

Studying everyday is so boring.

Fine.

Let's go.

Let me tell you, you have to first choose a ball that fits your hand.

I think this suits your hand.

Make your hand like this and stick two fingers in the middle like this.

Stick your thumb in the bottom. That's right.

Okay, now look at me.

Look at how I do it. Give the ball to me.

Keep your two legs together and then step forward with your left.

1, 2, 3, 4, 5.

You're pretty good at it.

Let's try it again. Let's try it again.

Yichen, why are you here only now?

Hurry and try it out!

Go Yichen! Go Yichen!

She's not only a gorgeous goddess,

but she also has skills in bowling.

Don't flatter me. I still have two more that didn't go in.

Look at me!

Xuanxuan, good luck!

Go Xuanxuan! Go Xuanxuan!

Go! Go! Go!

That's incredible!

You're so handsome! Xuanxuan is so handsome!

I paid for the fees as a punishment for me being late.

Have fun and play, everyone.

Li Li, come here and have a battle.

Let's see how much you've learned from what I taught you.

Let's do it, Li Li. Have a battle, have a battle!

I'm not really good at playing. I'll just look after your stuff. I can't do it.

Li Li, do it! Do it! Do it!

Sister Li Li, don't be shy. Come and play with us.

Okay?

- Sister Li Li! - That's right!

Just do it! Just do it!

Li Li! Li Li! Li Li!

Go! Go! Go!

I'll take photos of you!

Go!

What are you laughing at?!

- Nothing, nothing, nothing. - Sister Li Li.

Pei Shangxuan!

You're so bad at playing. Don't ever say that you're my disciple.

Are you okay, Sister Li Li?

Stop laughing at Sister Li Li.

Who didn't slip when bowling for the first time?

Did you guys not slip?

Nope.

Bowling doesn't suit me.

I'm heading home first.

- Don't be mad. - Don't leave.

Play with us.

We were joking, Li Li.

Oh, right! I want to tell you guys something.

I hope you guys can agree to it.

What is it?

This weekend will be my birthday, so I want to invite you all to barbecue.

I hope you all can come. If you guys don't come,

I'm going to be sad.

Of course, we'll all be there.

Sister Li Li, you're also coming, right?

I still have to study. I'm not going.

- Let's go, Li Li. - Let's all go.

- That's right! Let's go. - Everyone is going.

Just go. Just go.

Just go.

Did you come and see me just to tell me that you're leaving the country?!

Son,

please forgive my decision.

I really love you,

but I can only do this

so that we can all be happy.

You're lying.

You and dad are all selfish.

You guys only care for your own lives.

You guys never consider my feelings!

Qianren, calm down!

We also didn't want to come to this point in our lives.

You have to know that Mom really loves you.

I don't want to leave you, either.

Liar.

You guys are all liars.

- Qianren. - Leave.

Leave. Leave!

Right, right.

Don't worry, Li Li and I will definitely attend Yichen's birthday.

Okay, then we'll meet tomorrow. Bye.

What happened? Did you run a marathon?

Why do you look so lethargic?

Mom, I don't feel well.

Can I not go tomorrow?

You aren't—

I know.

You don't want to attend her birthday party, right?

There are already so many people giving her blessings. My blessings won't make a difference.

But you are her cousin. You're different from others.

Also, Yichen's mom already called us.

I know that you have some opinions against Yichen.

Yichen was brought up like a princess, spoiled since young.

She has a personality where if she wants anything, she'll have it.

But you have to remember

that when our family was struggling the most, Yichen's mother helped us.

Plus, you're her cousin.

That's why you should just give in to her a little.

Mom.

Okay, I'll pick an outfit for you now.

Even though we don't have to compare ourselves to the princess,

we still have to appear pretty. Am I right?

She's a princess, I'm a servant. How can we be compared?

If you're a servant, then I'm a maid.

Since the maid has already given her order, I can only obey.

Prepare and head out for dinner, okay?

Timing and Subtitles brought to you by Timeless Lovebirds Team @ Viki

Since it is a photo you treasure,

why force yourself to rip it?

Actually, you don't really hate my mother and me, right?

You just love your mom too much.

I can understand your feelings.

But I feel like you're luckier than I am,

because your mom is still alive.

No matter where she is in the world,

she can still continue to love you in the future.

But my father

left to another world.

All that's left for me are memories.

Perhaps hurting, rebelling,

are ways you're using to express that you want to feel loved, right?

I hope you can see that those who we can actually hurt

are those that we really love and those that we are closest to.

If you also love them,

you should be able to understand their feelings.

You reap what you sow.

Sow love, and you'll reap more love.

Li Li, hurry and come out to eat breakfast. There's no time.

I'm coming, Mom.

Good morning.

What are you yelling for?

Did you see a ghost?

Good morning?

He actually said "Good morning" to me?

Perhaps...

Mom, I'm hungry.

Here, here.

Okay.

Eat first. I'm going to wake up Mr. Liu.

Perhaps it's Li Li's kindness

or

is it that she's able to see through me?

On that morning,

I genuinely wanted to make up with her.

To let someone gain affection is actually really easy.

You only need to give someone in a desert a drop of water.

Year of 2016

It's rare that you're here. Have a cup of coffee.

I'm not here to be nostalgic about the past.

I'm here to only ask you one question.

Where is Li Li?

It's been such a long time since we've seen each other.

Shouldn't we at least relive the times?

Also, why do you think I'd know?

Li Li is your cousin.

The fact that you're not there when she's getting married is already strange.

And when I asked you where she was, you did not reflect a shocked reaction.

This shows that you'd know something about it.

Pei Shangxuan, you're definitely different now that you've become a president of a company.

Community college sure can refine somebody.

Recently,

I keep thinking about our school days.

We were really naive back then.

- They all tried to flatter you— - Let's not talk about this.

I had to go to community college all because of you.

It was all immaturity and recklessness.

I will not deny the past, but I will also not stop myself from going on because of it.

I've done so much for you since I came back to the country.

But you didn't see any of it. Your heart only contains Li Li.

This is already a thing of the past.

I've already put it down, so why hang on to it?

Let's get back on topic. Li Li is your cousin.

If you really know where she is, please tell me.

Everyone is looking for her.

Li Li is incredible.

Since young, she stole my everything.

But she pretended to be innocent to the point where

you and Liu Qianren both fell for her.

Stop joking. I don't have time to be joking now.

Look at what you have now. You can get whatever you want!

Who can steal anything that's yours?

That's the most pitiful part of me.

During high school, I performed a play.

I was obviously the main character

and Li Li was a maid.

But she was able to easily

win the attention of you and Daniel.

But why was it that I was definitely the princess,

but I ended up in a position where no one liked me?

Everybody has plans for their choices in life,

but they may not all come true.

It's not that every princess must have a prince and knight.

You want everybody to only focus on you, that's not wrong.

But you must not only know how to gain, you also have to learn how to give.

If not, everyone will leave you.

It was my fault for the past incident.

But everyone will make mistakes.

Don't I have the chance to fix it?

I have already forgiven you for that incident. I should actually thank you for it.

If it wasn't for you, I would have never known the person who never abandoned me or left my side.

Between you and me, you were the first to let go.

Even though I've forgiven you,

we can never be the same. Am I right?

So I'm the first to let go of you.

Now that I see it, I also never lost to Li Li.

You never lost to anyone.

In the future, I hope you can have less remorse

and more persistence.

Since you don't know where Li Li is,

I also don't have anything else to talk about anymore. I hope everything goes well.

Goodbye.

Year of 2003

Let's take a photo!

4, 3, 2...

Happy birthday to you! Happy birthday to you! Happy birthday to you!

Thank you.

I really thank you guys for coming to celebrate my birthday.

I'm really happy and touched.

I haven't made a lot of friends since I've transferred to this class.

That's why I really treasure the times I've been with you guys. I treasure this friendship.

I hope that you can all stay as my friends in the future. Thanks, you guys.

Bravo! Bravo!

Yichen, you're so nice and pretty. We're definitely willing to be your friend!

Yeah, that's what I wanted to say.

Yichen, happy birthday.

Thank you, Cousin Li Li.

- This is mine. - And mine!

Happy birthday.

- Thank you. - Let me help you collect them.

Cheese!

- I want to be in it, too. - Why are you in all of them?

Cheese!

For you two.

- Come, come. - Stand closer, stand closer.

Li Jun, can we make up now?

Stop looking at me as if I were your enemy every time you see me.

What are you doing? How is it that your smiling face is worse than your crying face?

What? Are you saying that I look bad when smiling?

At least it's better than Li Li's poker face.

That's true.

What are you doing?

Is it really that funny?

Everyone, let's gather!

Let's go. They're all heading there.

I want to tell you guys something.

Actually, I invited you guys here to BBQ so that we can observe the migratory birds together.

Migratory birds?

It's hard to see migrating birds,

so if two people can see them at the same time, it means that they're fated.

I have a recommendation.

Let's split into teams of two. Which ever team sees them first will be the luckiest team.

Sure. Look for yourself!

Let's start!

Let's start! Let's go that way.

These fools.

Who knows more about migratory birds than you?

Let's form a team and beat all of them to it. Let's go.

Li Li, how long do we have to walk for?

I didn't really eat anything for lunch. I'm so hungry.

If you don't go deep into the reed field, how would you see the migratory birds? Just a bit further, okay?

All humans have three necessities.

It's in this direction anyway. I'll head this way after.

If you get lost or don't find them, hurry back.

Are you really not coming?

Fine. Hurry and go eat.

I'll go look, I'll come back if I don't find them.

Okay.

Bye!

Why can't I see the birds? I've walked up to here already.

It seems like I can't see them today.
