Oi, Steve!

Oi!

Hey, are you all right, mate?

All right, there, b'y?

Order! Let's have some order here!

We're gonna get the ferry back up and running for you as soon as we can,

I promise, but for now,

we've got a bit of a situation on our hands.

So I'm gonna hand it over to someone who can explain it much better than I can.

Doctor.

- Go on, girl. You, uh… - Oh.

…tell 'em what you told me.

Thank you. Um…

For those who don't know me, I'm Dr. Howander

from the Ocean Science Center,

uh… down in Seal Cove.

And, um…

well, we've noticed some… unusual activity in these waters recently.

All right. Quiet.

There was the sinking of the Santa Cristina

near Fogo last week.

Then, Jerry Biles, here in Snooks Arm.

And now the two tourists in Deep Bay.

Based on what I've seen, I believe these incidents may be related.

I believe we may be dealing with an unusually aggressive cephalopod,

most likely genus Architeuthis dux,

otherwise known as the North Atlantic giant squid.

What?

This can't be real. Come on, this is a joke, right?

- Sh. I'm trying to listen. - Actually insane.

Until we have more information,

I strongly advise everyone to stay well back from the shore.

At least 50 feet.

- We know this animal has tremendous reach. - Dad.

No offense to you, missus, no offense,

but why should we believe a word you're saying?

- Yes. - Excuse me?

It was you crowd of scientists that told the government

shut down the fishery back in '92.

For a year or two, you said, and it's 30 years later,

and we still can't drop a goddamn line in the water.

Jesus Murphy Christ.

She's right!

This thing is real. I seen it with my own two eyes.

It tore Jerry Biles clean in two. It just about took my Wade.

It got the two mainlanders.

Only question now is what we're gonna do about it.

- No. - Thank you for your input, Calvin.

We're gonna let the experts take this.

If you thinks a giant squid did all this, you need your head checked.

The coast guard and the DFO are monitoring the situation closely.

They've assured us help is on the way.

You said that 30 years ago! "Help is on the way, b'ys!"

I'll do it meself.

Don't forget it's still Come Home Year,

and there's plenty to do off the water.

For instance, happy hour at Linda's Place and Bar.

Wha!

Ah! Ah.

- This is somethin' else, skipper. - Oh yeah.

She's a little beauty, mate. Here.

Here. This way.

- You're all dried off now? - Oh yeah. This blanket is wicked.

Yeah, look. You're getting some color back in your cheeks.

And mind the head.

Oh yeah.

Yeah, she's 120 feet,

300 ton,

and got an endurance range of 5,000 nautical miles.

Oh yeah. No, this is some deadly rig, all right.

Yeah, she's got the latest sonar satellite technology.

- You need it in this kind of work. - Oh yeah?

What kind of work is that?

Uh, conservation. Just, you know, raising awareness.

Educating and mobilizing people to take some action on climate change.

Climate change? Right on.

Oh yeah. I hear there's been some interesting activity in these parts.

Oh. Yeah. I mean, that would be an understatement.

- Oh yeah? Tell us more. - Well…

The other night, me and Jerry Biles went out,

you know, hoping to nab a bit of that ice in the harbor.

We were taking pot shots at it when, uh…

when something gave us a bump, you know? Something big.

Now, I can't say for sure what it was 'cause, at that point,

I goes into a bit of a blackout,

but all I know is Biles was ripped in two, and so was his boat.

Oh yeah, and then there's this.

Oh shit.

Ah, you see that?

- Does it hurt? - Huh?

Oh, like a shagger.

Have you been experiencing any, uh, unusual symptoms?

- Any headaches? - Sure, head's throbbing like mad.

- Uh-huh. You got difficulty sleeping? - Oh yeah, barely a wink.

Excessive thirst?

Yeah, like a plant with no water.

- Hallucinations? - Oh yeah. I got the hag something fierce.

- The hag? - Sure.

The old missus, you know?

Comes in your room at night. Sits on your chest.

Uh, so can you tell me, uh… what's going on here, b'ys?

My colleague's got this theory about, um… a previously undetected species

of cephalopod with a very unusual defense mechanism.

It's a gelatinous secretion that causes an effect in mammals

not dissimilar to chronic wasting syndrome.

Affected caribou have been known to bloody drown themselves

in an attempt to quench their thirst.

That's the stuff. Yeah, I think I mighta swallowed meself some of that.

It's also got a chemical in it with psychoactive properties,

so that probably explains the, um… the visions.

- Right, like the toads in the Amazon. - Yeah.

- Have you had some of that, have you? - Oh no, no. I mean, I wish, but no.

Why? Have you?

- Many times. - Ah!

Many times.

Oh well, we got some deadly old shrooms in the cove here.

- Yeah? - Sure.

- Can you get us some? - Ah yeah, don't say another word, buddy.

Hey, we're looking for, uh… a local hire, someone who knows these waters.

I can tell you right now, you're not gonna find another soul

who knows these waters better than Wade Penney.

Yeah?

Welcome aboard, mate.

Who are you calling?

Air Canada.

See what they suggest.

Are you really having that bad of a time here?

What? No, babe. There is a giant killer squid.

Were you not listening in there?

- Yes, yes. Hi. - Oh my God! Noah!

Oh my God. Dad!

Mary!

- All our agents… - Fuck.

…are presently busy.

- The hell's going on? - Your waiting time is greater than 45…

There's, uh…

There's a giant squid apparently.

Right on.

Hey, you didn't happen to see a ring lying around anywhere, did ya?

A ring?

- Yeah, just a… - Thank you for calling Air Canada.

A diamond ring belonging to my grandmother?

- All our agents are presently… - No.

You're not seriously goin' out there right now.

- Go home, Mary. - Are you insane?

That thing obliterated Jerry Biles's boat, and… and his was twice the size of yours.

Jerry Biles, God rest his soul, was a moron,

and he didn't know what he was dealing with.

- So you're gonna blow it up, are you? - I knows what I'm doin'.

Fine, then I'm coming wit' you.

- Yeah, I'm serious. - I knows you are.

But this is something I needs to do on my own.

Dad, please. Can you just be normal for a day or two?

We haven't spent any time together. You haven't said two words to Noah.

There'll be plenty of time for that later, I promise.

Now, go home, and stay away from the water. All of you.

Go home, Mary.

Dad.

Dad.

Fuck!

Ruth, where's me engine coil?

- Where the fuck is it? - Get outta my office.

I know you took it. Don't try to deny it.

Fuck.

You keep carrying on like this, I'll have your boat impounded.

- It's the same one, Ruth. - Same what?

The same one that took the house, the same one that took Dad.

- Mary's right. You are losing it. - I'm not losing a goddamn thing!

Things are finally starting to make a bit of sense.

That was 40 years ago, Calvin!

I knows what I saw.

Okay.

Okay. Let's say you're right.

All the more reason not to go out and get yourself killed.

Hasn't this family suffered enough?

You don't need to look out for me anymore. I'm not ten years old.

Marvelous. Let's see how you do without me when I'm gone.

You goin' somewhere?

Phonse and Noelle are voting to leave.

And you are too?

Go. Go.

I don't need you to stay.

Just give me back my coil, and then you can fuck off. Forever.

We're done here.

Drink?

I am off the clock.

What about him?

He's not going anywhere without his engine coil.

Mm-hmm.

Paddy.

- Do you have a spare engine coil? - No chance.

I'm not risking me boat crossing the Department of Fisheries.

Or worse, your sister!

Wade.

Fuck.

Thank you for calling Air Canada. Your call is important to us.

All our agents are presently busy.

Your estimated waiting time is 55 minutes.

Looks like we're gonna have a busy night,

so it's gonna be big squid prices all night long!

It's a disaster.

Dad running around like a lunatic like he can't even see Noah.

And now there's an actual fucking sea monster in the bay.

Must be special if you're bringin' him home to meet the family.

Yeah. I thought so too. Now he can't wait to get outta here.

In fairness, my love, that may have more to do with the sea monster.

No, no, it feels like more than that.

- Welcome home, Mary, my love! - Oh, Jan!

Aww.

So good to see your gorgeous face.

- Thanks, Jan. - Care to join?

Oh, I'd love to, but I gotta scoot back home now.

You should drop over sometime. We'll have a proper catch-up over a cup of tea.

- That sounds great. - Yeah.

I can't with her.

- She's not so bad. - Oh my God, look at her.

- In her $300 boots. - The important thing is she's trying.

- Yeah, way too hard. - Maybe a little too hard.

- That and she's banging Jay. - Mm. What?

Jesus.

What's the deepest point around here?

Probably Slade Cove, but I calls it "Wade's Cove."

Wade!

Oh, hey!

You should be at home right now. You're not well.

Oh. Well… I'm going with them.

These fellas have work to do. Don't waste their time. Come on.

No, I'm serious. Hey, Steve. Tell him.

Oh, it's true.

We were looking for a local hire to join our mission, and,

well, Wade tells us he knows the topography better than anybody.

- Is that right? - Yeah. That's right.

And what is your mission exactly?

Just raising awareness.

Raising awareness?

With a ballistic harpoon system, are ya?

It… it's all non-lethal, I can assure you.

Right.

Well, if I didn't know better, I'd say you fellas are out here hunting squid.

We're not hunters, Mr. Penney. We're conservationists.

Look.

I don't know what my son's been telling you,

but he's been through a very traumatizing ordeal.

I'm fine. Don't listen to him.

You've got a fine ship here, and I'm sure you've got a great crew,

but these waters is filled with shipwrecks,

and they all had fine crews.

Now, I've seen this thing up close with me own two eyes,

and without a seasoned hand, you fellas don't stand a chance.

And you'd be willing to lend us that hand, would you?

Well, on one condition.

You leave the boy behind, and you bring me with you instead.

What? Whoa, whoa, whoa. Wait. What are you saying?

I imagine you've heard of the Titanic. Now, she met her final resting place…

- Oh, the Titanic. - …just off here in these waters.

And with Wade, you're likely to be joining her right quick.

Imagine that. The freakin' Titanic.

So what do you say? We got a deal?

Fuck this.

Wise choice.

- Wade! - We ship out at first light.

Wade.

Look. I know you had your heart set, but this is dangerous stuff.

These people are not to be trusted.

- Get off me! - And you're not well.

- Look. You're all clammy in the face. - Frig off. Yeah?

Jesus Christ.

- I'm trying to look out for you. - Are you done?

What's gotten into you, b'y?

- What happened to you last night? - I'm sorry about that.

Just…

family drama.

Mm-hmm.

You know, all that resettlement talk's got everybody

a bit stressed.

It's more than just talk. Might really happen this time.

But you're the official, uh…

resettlement person, right?

Yes, but

I don't write the checks. I just keep the peace.

But you could slide a name on a list.

If you wanted to.

What happened to you?

It's a long story, really, but, um…

That 60 grand, that…

that could really come in handy right about now.

No, no… Um…

Sorry.

Forget I asked.

Look, if you can… if you can find a couple pieces of mail

with an address in the cove, I might be able to look the other way.

- Thank you. - Just…

Don't ever leave me waitin' in the dark again.

You got it?

Yeah, I got it.

Hey!

Hey!

What?

Hey!

Jesus.

Get off the water! It's not safe!

Hey!

Dr. Sayed?

Uh, you don't know me, but I know you. I…

I mean, I know your work. I'm, um…

I'm a marine zoologist, too, like you.

Well, God, no, not like you. I…

Uh… Hey, um…

Can we talk?

I have a theory on the core sample you just took.

Based on my own observations and then your precautions,

it seems likely to me that there's some kind of contaminant in the iceberg,

but I believe that this contaminant is somehow connected

to the arrival of a lethally aggressive cephalopod.

- Does that sound crazy to you? - Yes.

- Oh. - But crazy doesn't mean wrong.

Could you please wait in there?

- Oh yeah. - Please?

Oh!

Wow, you must've gotten a hell of a research grant.

Uh, nowadays, most of my funding comes from the private sector.

And, to be honest, I mean, this thing behaves like nothing I've ever seen.

Not even Architeuthis.

That's because it's not Architeuthis.

This species is much older

and much more dangerous.

What is it?

Excuse me.

I call her Species A, but feel free to find a better name.

Just… What's… it doing here?

Look here.

I mean, a… a cephalopod of that size should be in much deeper, colder waters,

not just drifting onto an inshore shelf.

Oceans warming.

Permafrost thawing. Glaciers melting.

Her natural habitat was the deep Arctic, but now,

it's all breaking apart, and it's…

it's never coming back again.

So, every few years, she goes roaming.

Drifting with the Labrador Current.

But why does it seem like she's stickin' around this time?

Yes.

And… But what does she have to do with the iceberg

and these secretions within the ice?

My theory is she's using the icebergs to mark her territory.

It's a warning to other species to stay back.

Uh, but you… I mean, you must've tested them.

How toxic are they?

It depends.

On exposure, on how much you ingest.

Ingest?

1742.

The Low Arctic.

A group of British sailors got separated from their ship in a terrible blizzard.

They wandered around, wandered for days, until they came across this.

On the ice.

They decided to make camp in the carcass of this kraken,

as they called it.

But their ship, it took days to break through the ice and get to them,

and by the time they got there, all but one were…

were dead.

The survivor's the one who made this sketch.

He said

the entire party went mad.

Turned on each other,

started fighting over the few tools they had.

All of them trying to dig their way down through the ice.

Why?

He said they were trying to drown themselves in the seawater below.

Fuck!

Oh!

Squid or no squid, I'm getting on the go tonight.

But what you gonna do, huh? That's what I wanna know.

Oh!

Hey, Mr. Tour Guide!

Everybody here, huh?

This place is awesome!

Oh, would you look at that?

- Have you seen it happen? - Happens all the time.

Oh, Mr. Penney!

I was wondering when our chief navigator would show his face.

Let's keep that between us.

Small town. Some get jealous when there's work to be had.

Understood, understood.

And you might wanna rein in your buddy, there.

We needs clear heads tomorrow.

Ah, don't worry about him. He'll be okay. Um, can you get him a beer, please?

Sure.

All right. Just the one.

- There you go. - Dawn comes early.

Well, here's to the great unknown.

And us fools chasing it.

Cheers. Good on ya.

- Rum and Pepsi. - You got it.

Yeah.

Here you go, my love.

Surprised you're still talking to me, let alone buying me drinks.

Well,

I can't blame you for wanting out. You got your own crowd to think about.

I didn't mean for it to come out like that earlier.

I'm just tired and crooked and worried you're gonna do somethin' foolish.

You don't have to worry about me.

I had a think on it, and, uh… I gets where you're comin' from.

This family's suffered enough.

There we go. Can we get a second one, Linda?

- No. Pumpkin time for me. - What?

- You behave yourself. - Yeah.

Yeah.

Hey, I was, uh… just looking for you fellas, actually.

Yeah? Where's the money?

Relax. I've got good news.

Good boy.

The fuck am I looking at here?

Proof of residency. That there's a golden ticket.

A 60K payout. Guaran-fucking-teed.

No, these are your high-school fuckin' transcripts, guy.

- And your GST stubs. - Yes, yeah. Exactly.

Guys, I'll have the money I owes you. Six to eight weeks tops.

- Six to eight. - Listen, I've got a girl on the inside.

You got a girl on the inside?

- Mercy! - Oh shit.

Six to eight weeks? We can't wait that long!

- Hey! - Dad! Wait!

- Hey! - Get off.

- It's fine! - Fuck off.

Shut the fuck up.

This is your old man, huh?

Maybe we should take this up with you.

- Take what up with me, huh? - Oh, you didn't tell him.

Tell your fucking daddy, Jay. It's all good.

This isn't over, Jay.

High-school fuckin' transcript.

Jesus.

Who the fuck are they then?

Just some friends from Fort Mac.

Oh! Good friends, are they? Nice fellas?

I owes them a bit of money.

I thought you were making money hand over fist out there.

How much are we talkin'?

Eighty?

Eighty thousand dollars?

I've got it under control, Dad.

How the fuck are you gonna find 80 grand, huh?

You too?

Vote's gonna go through anyway, Dad.

- Yeah! - One more.

Come on.

Oh yeah!

Mary, Mary, Mary, Mary!

Mary, Mary, Mary, Mary!

Hey, Linda. What happened to Steve and what's his name?

Left a while ago now.

- When did they close out their tab? - No tab. Never even had a drop to drink.

Which is peculiar, you ask me.

I mean, what sailor comes to shore and doesn't have a drink?

Wade?

Wade?

Motherfuckers!

Barry?

Goddammit, Wade.

Shit.

Barry!

Barry?

- Barry. - Water!

Barry!

Hey, hey, hey, hey!

Hey, hey! Stop!

Water! Water! Water!
