I've been watching Naked And Afraid
since it came out.
I've always wanted to be the guy in this boat,
and now here I am. It's my turn.
As a huge fan, I actually never thought
I would be on the show,
so I'm just filled with gratitude.
But also aware that I have no idea
what I'm getting myself into.
Super-fans Sara and Frank
will attempt to survive on the island of Tobago,
off the east coast of South America.
A tropical, dense jungle
built on the jagged teeth of volcanic rock,
and crawling with venomous centipedes,
poisonous scorpions, biting black engine ants,
and hoards of swarming, blood-sucking mosquitos.
I'm confident I can make it 14 days out here,
but look at it! It's not a good place to live.
I just wanna get out there
and then prove to myself that I can do this.
It's about to happen.
Nice! I see a raft.
Time to get naked. I'm ready.
I feel fine being naked.
We all have, you know, some insecurity, but my body
is not a temple.
It's like a rocket ship that is made to get done.
Being out here with another naked woman, my wife,
she's got nothing to worry about.
I'm all hers.
Cheehoo!
Aw, yeah. That's great.
The wait is over.
It's happening.
I've been training for this my whole life.
Primitive hunting is one of my best skills,
and hunting successfully with primitive traps.
That's gonna be dinner. Probably gonna chicken-fry him
or make tacos, something out of him.
I see anything close enough I can run down in a foot race,
I am putting these hands on it.
Ribbit.
Frank brings a no-nonsense approach.
But his small game hunting skills
will be severely tested in this environment.
He begins with a Primitive Survival Rating,
or PSR, of 5.7.
As the shore gets closer,
so does reality of what's about to happen.
I'm here to strengthen my relationship with myself.
I want the experience of being out there,
connecting with my primal roots.
I've been doing it since I was a kid in Hawaii.
So beautiful. It's a double rainbow.
I've always been weird and kinda silly.
I worked through undergrad to pay for circus school
and then I became a solo circus performer,
and have toured the world doing it.
Most of my life has been solo.
I travel solo.
I think one of the biggest challenges is gonna be
the flexibility with whoever my partner is.
See ya!
Sara has spent a lifetime
practicing her primitive skills,
but her quirky independent nature
could impact her survival in a team situation.
Sara's initial PSR has been set at 5.2.
I guess we're partners.
That's so funny. I'm Sara.
- Frank. Nice to meet you. - Nice to meet you, Frank.
Shall we, like, get this out of the way?
Like, this is my naked body.
- Yeah. Yeah. - Cool. Let's...
There we are. All right.
This looks pretty rugged.
Yeah, how's this environment for you?
I'm pretty... pretty confident in it.
- Yeah. Same. - But it's not gonna be easy.
Where are you from?
- I'm from Jacksonville, Florida. - Great.
So you're used to the weather.
- Yeah. - Awesome. I'm from Hawaii.
- So I'm... yeah. - You're used to the weather.
- I think we're coming in from good spots. - Okay, yeah.
- All right. Let's do it. - For the next 14 days in Tobago.
- Cool. Yeah. - I guess we find our bags now and...
Nice. Guess this is mine.
I got a cast net.
- And we got this machete. - Nice.
In addition to their personal items,
Sara and Frank are provided with a fire starter,
a pot, and a map.
So, looks like there's a stream.
- Some bamboo. - Yeah.
That's great for shelter,
- and food. We got... - Absolutely. Yeah.
I guess we're gonna come down the creek
to the bamboo?
- Yeah. - That would be extraction.
All right, you ready to do this?
- I'm so ready, dude. - All right.
I would chest-bump you,
- but we're not there yet, you know? - Yeah.
- Give it a couple days. - Yeah.
- Well, after you. Yeah. - All right, thanks.
Sara is my partner.
14 days out here.
I think I hit the partner lotto.
I'm immediately comfortable with her,
and it's not always easy to get that.
Do you wanna go on the shore or just cut through there?
- Let's cut through here. - Yeah. All right.
Sara and Frank enter the Tobagan jungle
home to aggressive spectacled caiman,
who use 75 razor-sharp teeth to catch their victims,
and menacing boa constrictors.
While not venomous, they can deliver
an extremely painful bite
as they squeeze the life out of their prey.
It's also the rainy season,
when 90-degree temperatures by day can quickly give way
to violent thunderstorms by night,
causing flash floods, lightning strikes,
and falling trees.
Yeah, these rocks are rough on my feet.
This is gonna be a rough go no matter how we slice it,
- isn't it? - Yeah.
Everything's so thick here.
- It's super-dense. - Super-dense.
Yeah. And, the bugs are starting to come out.
These bugs.
Being naked out here,
I don't know how that's gonna go.
It's hot, it's humid.
Like, there's things crawling all over me right now.
There's stuff crawling by my butt.
There's all these things
that on TV you don't even really see
that we're feeling all over our bodies.
These damn flies.
They're mowing down on my boys,
and... it's brutal.
That's the hazards of being naked in a jungle.
Whoa.
- Yeah. - Mega bamboo.
Look at all these resources.
Whoa. This is perfect.
- It is. - I think this is great.
We got tons of bedding.
- Yeah. - Tons of bamboo
for building, making traps, making everything.
I think this is home.
- Think this is home? - It feels good.
I'll cut some of these
and we'll get a A-frame going right here.
So far with Frank, stoked. Great partner.
We're both completely focused
on our priorities, and there's no BS, you know?
It's just - get it done.
- Guess we decided. - Cool.
Home sweet bushes.
- Over there. - Home sweet bush.
Priority number one is getting off the ground.
Even if we don't sleep all night,
we cannot be on the ground.
There's ants everywhere, it's wet, there's bugs.
Off the ground, number one.
Pretty good.
We got a few hours of daylight left.
Before we finish the shelter,
we're gonna get fire and we're gonna get water.
There you go. Come on. Come on, come on.
Come on!
That's a fire.
- It's definitely a fire. - It's definitely a fire.
I got fire. Cheehoo!
- How you feeling, Frank? - Feeling pretty good.
Look at this.
- Frank's making the bed. - Little fire. Yeah.
Little hot. My God.
I am so happy I got that fire.
Time to get some water going.
We need to finish the shelter
and just keep baby-stepping our way up
for the first night.
- Ooh, this is a good one. - Yeah.
We've got these broad leaf plants,
like birds of paradise type things.
They got nice, wide, long leaves.
They look excellent for building material.
Put a roof on,
in case it starts raining,
we can at least somewhat stay dry.
I am mentally prepared
to go through some really tough weather out here,
ferocious storms. I'm gonna batten down the hatches
and use every resource I can
to have a strong shelter.
All right, this is really starting to come together.
Look at that.
- This looks great. - Water.
- Yeah. - This is beautiful.
This is a beast of a shelter.
God.
It looks great. It looks comfy.
I think we crushed it.
Seriously?
You wanna go up to that bend and explore?
- See if we can get some firewood? - Yeah.
Look at that huge lizard.
Yeah, it's a big lizard.
Are you gonna get it?
Get it, dude.
Can you see?
- I see, he's... - Where? Okay.
Right where you're point... Up a little.
Right there, that's its mid-section,
on the exact opposite side of the tree.
Can you see?
- I see, he's... - Where? Okay.
Right where you're point... Up a little.
Right there, that's its mid-section,
on the exact opposite side of the tree.
Right in front of you.
You got it.
- Dude! - Yes.
This guy is insane!
My partner's a bad-ass.
Super-impressed by Frank.
He caught a lizard,
and he incorporated me in the process.
Like, he wasn't conceited about it.
He's like, "Hey, help me out, where do you see the lizard?"
He caught it like a Floridian lizard ninja.
He's got skills, for sure.
- Caught him twice. - My gosh.
My kick-ass partner
got us a little lizard on the stove/fire already.
I think we're doing really good.
As I'm reflecting I'm like, "You know what?
Yeah, this is a great place to be."
The first day out here.
- That's for you. - The whole tail?
- Yeah. - Thanks.
Aw, yeah.
- Lizard back... Ooh! Dang. - My goodness.
Awesome when you can just peel strips of lizard,
lizard meat off the carcus.
I gotta be real with you, lizard toes? Pretty good.
Right?
I have meat stuck in my teeth.
- That's a good feeling. - It's a great feeling.
That was great.
I want about 10 of those a day.
I know.
Yeah, the bats are out, so...
Well, at least they can help eat mosquitos.
Yeah. It's not gonna be long before it's dark.
Night one in the unknown.
Everything about life feels itchy right now.
It's crazy. We're in a jungle.
We're in the middle of freakin' Tobago.
- Yeah. - It's rough out here.
- Everything's on my body. - Yeah.
There's so much stuff
- that crawls on you here. - So much stuff.
My ankles are ate up.
- Can't even see it. - Ate up.
No smooth spots on the ankles.
They're hitting below the belt here.
Literally.
I got a bite right on my... Like, right on my nipple.
Yeah. That's horrible.
It's everything I hoped for and more
out of this challenge, just...
nipple bites and good company.
I got my stick.
- Got my net. - All right, let's...
- Let's go to the beach. - Let's go to the beach.
Sara and I have been working our butts off,
and we're gonna need to replenish that energy.
I brought this cast net and I'm itching to try it out.
It's gonna be a hike down there
and a hell of a hike back.
That's basically our insertion hike twice.
But it's... it'll be worth it
if we can score some protein.
Look at that water.
I just wanna get in it.
That's slippery!
Yeah.
I can smell fish.
All right, I'm gonna go work on some firewood
before the tide comes up.
I'm just gonna grab whatever I can.
Okay.
The strongest skills I have are
definitely hunting and fishing.
I have done a lot of research on the local fish here.
I'm definitely the right man for this job.
I see fish.
All right.
Let it sink.
Hopefully it's not tangled up on nine million rocks.
Whoo-hoo! Yeah!
Protein.
I'll take it.
It's freakin' protein.
It's not a big fish,
but if I can get four or five of 'em today,
I mean, that's gonna go a long way for us.
That's a big score.
Even another one. We're gonna be okay.
Now let's try to get some more.
Let's get some stuff to start our fire with.
Everything is wet, so my job right now is
to look out for dry material and keep us going.
It's tempting to grab more, but limited carrying capacity,
so I'm gonna break this up,
and if I can, I'll wrap these up
so we have a little bundle.
Here we go.
Got 'em. Did you see that?
Is that a fish in there?
- I got two. - Nice.
There's the first one
hanging from the tree like an ornament.
Little fishy!
That's so good.
I entered this trip down to the beach
with no expectations. That's how I roll.
I couldn't be happier. I'm so proud of Frank.
I got a few snails. They're not...
- Bring 'em. We'll make a stew. - Yeah?
We'll put all of this in a stew
- and eat like kings tonight. - Okay.
It is dinner time, baby!
Yup.
Got fish.
We got some edible greens.
Man, this smells freakin' good.
Sara came up with these papaya leaves.
We chopped them up,
and then put them in with the fish to boil.
That papaya leaf.
- Is it great? - It's great.
I just got a chunk of fish.
Probably a square-centimeter chunk.
- It's not big, but... - No, it's good.
The fish soup is amazing.
All of a sudden we have vitamins,
we have protein, we have oil.
It was a huge trek. My back hurts.
But it was totally worth it.
I really did not expect somebody with your skillset
and your humility, and I, like,
swear to God, could not be happier.
Bringing it in as a team.
- The dream team. - Absolutely.
- Really good. - Yeah.
Bugs are way worse tonight.
My God, they're everywhere.
I can barely think.
It's so itchy.
We ashed the bed with bamboo ash
because that's what you do to keep bugs away.
But it's like microscopic piece of glass
- all over your body. - Yeah. Fiberglas.
- It sucks. - Yeah.
We are unable to sleep.
All I could do was sit there and itch.
Yeah.
My butt is on fire.
I don't even know what's biting my butt.
Tired. I wanna sleep.
I'm gonna take all this ash off.
That turned it into
- our worst night last night. - Yeah.
Last night was rough.
It was a huge mistake to put the ash in the bed.
I've used hardwood ash before,
but never bamboo ash.
It's got these hairs in it,
and when you burn it,
the hairs are still there and they are still itchy.
It was possibly the worst night out here.
It was, hands down,
the worst night so far.
It was brutal. I ended up sleeping on the floor,
which was not good for my back.
Basically from my waist to my hip
on my left side is in spasm.
Extremely uncomfortable, physically.
So we're gonna keep mudding up,
help protect us from the buggies.
'Cause this bamboo ash paves the road to hell.
It's horrible.
How hungry are you, Frank?
I'm pretty hungry.
After we catch 87 crawdads in here,
you'll be like, "Damn."
I would love to be
at the beach every day catching fish,
but it's a rough hike.
You know, it takes a lot out of you.
You get down there, then you gotta get your haul back.
It's a double-whammy.
On the agenda for today,
we're gonna be setting some traps.
Sara's making a crawdad trap.
Found some crab holes,
and I'm gonna get busy getting them.
You know, a big protein score, that'd be awesome.
This is just like any other box trap.
Get your two holes,
the trap door, and this would be the dog.
When the crab crawls in here, it'll hit the dog,
releasing the trap door.
But this is a power-assisted one.
With some vine, I'll make a little bow.
It doesn't take very much power to keep a crab in.
It's at an angle, so the more he pushes,
the harder it locks in.
And that's kinda the secret to the whole trap.
And hopefully we'll get some land crabs
here in Tobago.
All right, crawdad trap.
I'm just gonna lightly attach this one in.
And anything that size or smaller can get in,
and they don't know how to turn around.
They stay and then they go in our belly.
That's the plan.
See all this new dirt?
It's muddy. This is definitely an active hole.
We're gonna set this trap right here,
and hope for the best.
All right.
I see one. Ooh.
Big one.
All right, gonna put it in here.
I'm just gonna weigh this down with some rocks,
and then come back and check it
in hopes of craw-diddy-dads.
That one I saw was really big, so that's a good sign.
I am going to go check the crab traps.
Think I'm just gonna lie down.
I'm okay.
Yeah, good for a bit.
Last night we didn't get no sleep.
The storm rolled in.
We got some pretty good lightning and thunder.
And right now my partner's going through some stuff.
She's in a lot of pain.
She doesn't really talk about it a whole lot,
but she doesn't have to. I mean, it's apparent.
I'm dealing with a lot of pain right now.
On a scale of one to 10, I'm, like, a seven or eight.
Right after undergrad,
I went to circus school in Beijing.
I was studying contortion, and I broke my back.
And it is as awful as it sounds.
I'm healed and I can move around
and I'm very fit and active.
I've been managing the pain really well.
I know when to rest.
But in a situation like this challenge,
I don't have time to rest.
We're up all night,
dealing with bugs and the wind and the rain.
It's physically taxing.
But all I can do is suck it up.
Figure it out. Keep moving.
Damn. Nothing.
We've had a little protein,
but not enough, and protein's a huge thing.
I mean, we're gonna need that.
Our bodies, our muscles are gonna need it.
Especially, I mean,
if we got 10 days left in this challenge,
you know, that's a long ways to go.
I'm hoping the crab trap pays off.
It's just right over here.
Right there, and it's... it's sprung.
Look at this.
It just didn't... It just didn't catch.
It went off, though.
Well, he didn't get out, so...
guess we'll try it again.
You can't give up when it gets tough,
or you're gonna stay hungry.
I mean, a mountain lion
doesn't give up when he's hungry.
He keeps looking.
Hopefully it works.
It's probably, like, 2:00 in the morning,
and I have not slept.
Not even one minute.
Is there anything I can do to help?
There's nothing we can do.
My body's miserable.
I slept, like, an hour last night.
My back pain's been getting worse.
It's really hard in this environment.
I know my body.
And I know if I don't get sleep,
it just is gonna go downhill really quickly.
I don't wanna tap out.
But I'm worried about long-term damage.
I know my mind is strong enough
to pull my body through.
But right now my body is in a really rough place.
I'm just in a lot of pain.
My back feels really horrible.
There's no comfortable place to sit.
All right.
My number one concern is definitely my partner.
She's in a lot of pain, and I'm worried about that.
Can go from bad to worse real quick out here.
That can be a game-changer.
And it would be a shame for her to quit.
To have something
just swoop you out of a challenge like that.
That would be crushing.
So I'm gonna do whatever I can
to just try to make her comfortable.
And I'm like, "Holy cow."
I got an idea.
That's a butt rock right there.
- Thank you for the butt rock. - You are welcome.
Spa day.
Spa day. This is more like
physical therapy adjustment day.
My partner gave me noni leaves which are anti-inflammatory,
wrapped around a really hot rock,
and I'm just resting it on my back
just to help it heal a bit.
It feels really good.
Straight from the fire to the leaf to the back.
Yeah.
I came into this challenge
prepared to deal with somebody really difficult,
and what I got is somebody really capable
with a good heart and an open mind.
I couldn't ask for a better teammate.
It's amazing.
I'm doing my best, making sure
everybody makes it to the finish line.
That's really good.
I'm starting to feel the spasm relax.
As long as I have noni leaves
and hot rocks, I'm gonna do that
as much as I can,
and take every small, simple step I can
to take care of my body out here.
- Thank you so much. - You're welcome.
It's getting tougher every day.
Getting hungrier every day.
Damn.
Been sprung but there's nothing in 'em.
I'm gonna try something different.
I know there's a lot of crab in here and a lot of birds.
I'm gonna try to find a fairly big-sized flat rock
for a Paiute deadfall.
I've been very successful with these through the years.
They're simple to make.
This is the main post for my Paiute.
And then it'll have a lever stick
and it'll rest in this one,
and just form, like, a little pivot point for it.
They'll get back in, start tugging at that bait,
and bam.
I just wanna get one big score before I go.
Just one.
Just one.
Right.
My back is feeling a lot better today.
It's not 100%,
but it's at 80%. It's a lot better.
Just three days until extraction.
We need more calories.
We're running out of foraging stuff,
and so we really need to rely on protein and traps.
All right, let's see if I'm lucky.
Nope, nothing.
At this stage, the reality is we are extremely depleted.
Mentally, physically, emotionally, spiritually.
And it sucks. It sucks.
Feels good to move early.
Yeah.
Can hear those waves calling us.
Still haven't caught them land crabs
or anything in the traps,
so Sara and I got up this morning really early
to make this long trip to the beach.
Hell of a journey down that rocky stream bed.
Not looking forward to that journey back.
But we gotta get some protein.
- Wanna give it a toss here? - All right.
We're both hitting a bit of a wall.
So to make this trek out here is a huge risk.
Nope.
- Nothing. - Nothing.
All right, I'll pull.
- Nothing. - Nothing?
- Nothing. - Nothing.
If the tide's rough,
a lot of times, fish won't come in that close.
They know better.
They don't wanna get washed ashore either.
Nope.
I only got one or two throws left in me.
Nothing.
Nothing.
- I'm tired. I mean... - Yeah.
Throwing that net, I mean,
I might have only thrown the net
maybe 15, 20 times,
but it's not worth just throwing for nothing.
That was exhausting.
It's a bummer. It's a bummer.
As a hunter and a survivalist, being able to provide
protein for me and my partner,
I mean, that's kinda... that's kinda my thing.
If I don't bring home something to eat,
I just feel like a complete failure.
We got one more day and night in the bush,
and our extraction hike is coming up.
The walk out's gonna be brutal enough
without being fatigued and malnourished,
so I'm gonna keep trying, you know?
Never give up. Just keep trying.
My God.
The deadfall's definitely sprung.
Let's see what happened.
It has fired.
Wait. My God. Look at this.
Never eaten grubs but I've just...
I see people do it, so...
I can see its goo.
Yeah, it's gotta have something there.
Grubs.
This is what you call thriving.
It just tastes like burnt skin.
They're great.
A lot of people eat grubs on this challenge,
and I'm really honored to be part of the club.
That is a true delight.
- Not a fan of those grubs. - Me neither.
The deadfall's definitely sprung.
Wait. My God. Look at this.
It had a mouse.
The jungle has beat me to it.
How do you like that?
Guessing it's some type of jungle shrew.
These ants have already just pretty much
consumed my catch.
That really sucks.
'Cause I would have ate that.
I would have happily ate that.
Last night here in Tobago.
We got tons of firewood.
We are gonna just go hog wild
with the firewood tonight.
And we got Frank's fantastic smile.
And my evening chilling pose.
Back's tired. Body's ready for bed.
I'm hoping the weather clears.
Another drip.
It's night 13.
Every time I start to fall asleep,
there's more rain or thunder,
or trees breaking near our shelter.
Holy moly.
Every time we think it's about to be sunrise,
'cause the storm clears,
another storm wave comes.
Night 13.
Anyways, we're walking out of here in the morning.
Well, Sara-bear, we made it.
Not yet, man.
It's not good.
It's day 14.
Extraction hike.
- It is raining. - Brutal rain.
And windy. Deadfall above,
treacherous, slippy ground beneath.
This storm is making extraction a whole other game.
Safety is a huge concern right now.
It's gonna be brutal.
All right, man.
This is the last time we look at this map.
Yeah.
- We're here? - Yeah.
Right here is where the hill starts going up.
And it's gonna be really rough.
We're gonna have to be very, very careful.
- Very slow. - Gonna be steep and slippery.
- All right, man. - All right, well, let's get out of here.
Sara and Frank will be heading four miles south
across slippery terrain covered with sharp thorns,
jagged fallen bamboo,
and stinging scorpions
camouflaged on the wet jungle floor.
The storm has dropped more than five inches of rain,
which will further tax their depleted bodies
as they attempt to climb
a treacherous 60-degree incline
to a clearing where they will meet their extraction vehicle.
Yeah. Look at this puddle, man.
Yeah. This hike is gonna be particularly hard
- because it's hard to see. - Yeah.
Footing's gonna be loose.
We gotta head due south.
And without sunlight, that's a little harder.
Yeah, here comes the mud.
This is unexplored territory here.
Properly in the wilderness.
You're actually bleeding a little.
- Yeah? There's sharp stuff out here. - Yeah.
Yeah, on your back.
We got a bunch of deadfall bamboo up here.
We're gonna have to try to skirt this
or work through it,
but definitely don't trust any of it.
- No, don't step on anything. - Yeah.
Ouch. Ouch.
Ooh, lots of these things
with the fibers we don't like right here.
The storm kicking up.
Pick a route you feel safe with.
We gotta get out of this bamboo.
- Yeah. - Like, this could fall on us at any second.
- If that wind picks up... - Then we're done.
Look at this hill. This is no joke, man.
It's gonna get steep.
You all right, Sara?
I'm just going slow, man.
Woof.
- Pretty pokey through here. - Yeah.
Ooh!
- Man, this is a scramble. - Yeah.
It gets really rocky right through here, Sara.
- Go ahead, I'll go behind you. - All right.
All right, I'm gonna go really slow.
- Man. - What do you see?
I see a beautiful opening and a dirt road.
- Let's go. - Let's go.
Let's check it out.
- Man. - What is it? Is it a road?
Um... yeah.
I think it's our road.
Dude, that's not the ocean I hear.
Hey! We got goats! Dude!
Please be our ride.
Yes! Hi! We get to go with goats!
My God.
It's been 14 days in the jungle.
I see them goats and, I mean, I start salivating.
I'm thinking barbecue.
I'm just hungry.
We are on our extraction vehicle
with these cute little goats,
and I am on top of the world right now.
I entered this challenge
with a beginner's mindset.
The only thing I assumed
was that it would be really, really hard.
And I was correct, sir.
I learned so many hard skills from Frank.
We came into this challenge strangers,
and we're leaving as friends with a lifetime bond.
I feel like a million bucks right now.
After everything we've been through,
this, this right here is great.
I never felt prouder of Sara and me
as a team working together.
Couldn't ask for a better partner.
She'll always be in my heart right there.
After experiencing this, on the couch
watching the challenges,
and then actually being in one,
it's... it's tough. It ain't no joke.
I have so much respect for the people before me now.
Frank dropped 20 pounds
during the challenge.
His PSR increases from 5.7 to 6.0.
To hop in the back of a truck
with my partner and two goats,
it made me realize how insane this whole thing is.
Sara lost a total of 17 pounds.
Her PSR rises from 5.2 to 5.8.
I think we need to do a 21-day now.
- I'm ready. Let's do 21. - Yeah.
- Let's go. - Absolutely.
14 days in Tobago! Whoo-hoo!
