Hold on to your butts. [laughing]
It's my first time in South America.
So far... [laughing]
It seems pretty dangerous.
[howling]
This forest is thick as hell, man.
I mean, I haven't seen anything this thick...
maybe ever.
[Rachel] This place is called the "Impenetrable Jungle"
and it seems like it was well named.
This vegetation is thick.
This part of the world is extremely beautiful.
It's also extremely dangerous.
[narrator] Stretching over 15,000 square miles,
the deadly forest of Chaco, Argentina is known by locals
as the "Impenetrable Jungle."
Large swamps of dense wilderness and thorny brush
make it nearly impassable for humans,
but provide the perfect cover for jaguars, maned wolves
and the venomous fer-de-lance snake.
Beneath some of the world's thickest jungle canopy where sunlight is limited,
moisture from the region's violent subtropical storms
leads to extreme temperature shifts of over 30 degrees.
And now as the challenge begins,
an unusually intense and sustained cold front
could cause nighttime temperatures to drop as low as 40 degrees.
The hardest thing for a man to admit to himself is that he's fearful.
Believe me, I'm fearful.
Rachel, you're a crazy lady. [laughing]
Oh, man.
[laughing] I'm so nervous.
Okay. Be brave.
I'm definitely nervous about meeting my partner.
The idea of meeting someone naked for the first time
and then having to survive with them is a little daunting.
All right.
I have no problems whatsoever being naked.
I enjoy it actually.
I've done nude yoga to prepare myself.
And the only thing that I kind of regret is,
you know, I put on a couple pounds in preparation for this
and I don't have my sexy body down.
But, hey, you know what, I'm gonna let it fly and have fun.
All right. Let's do it.
[Rachel] And into the jungle we go.
It is fairly thorny here.
The terrain is rough.
I feel like everything in this jungle... Ow.
...is sharp.
Ow! Biscuits!
Ow.
I am stuck.
Toodle-oo! Is anyone out there?
Hello.
Marco!
- [Na'im] Polo! - [gasps] Oh, yes!
Hey! I'm right here.
- Hello! - [Na'im] Hey! I can see you.
Wonderful. Oh, my goodness.
- [Na'im] There you are. - [Rachel] Oh, we made it.
- Wait, you look familiar. - Do I?
- Word up. I'm Na'im. - Yes, hi.
- Rachel. Nice to meet you. - Rachel, nice to meet you.
- Oh, I do know where I remember you from! - [Rachel laughing]
You were on the Naked and Afraid of Love.
[Na'im] Oh, my God.
[Na'im] Oh, my goodness.
- I was. - Totally. Okay, cool.
[Na'im] That's awesome.
I feel like I got a taste of, you know, survival
doing Naked and Afraid of Love.
- Let's bust this out. - I'm so excited.
[Rachel] Match made in heaven.
Uh, I have not actually.
I had expected it to be more naked and afraid and less of love.
So I'm looking for more of that challenge.
So I'm looking for more of that challenge
and I'm looking to push myself
and to grow through this experience.
- Okay. So, you're back for the real deal. - [Rachel] I am.
I'm not looking for love. I'm looking
- to survive this time. - [Na'im] Okay, cool.
I remembered her on the show,
like, kind of the person she was.
And so, like, it's actually, like, comforting
because I know that I got someone
that I'm pretty sure I can vibe with.
- I'm looking to love the jungle. - Yeah.
So, let's do it. Here, look. Take a good look. Here we go.
- [Rachel laughing] Okay. - [Na'im] Look at that.
- Oof! Okay. - Okay.
Cool. Let's do it.
My first impression of Na'im is that he's just really excited to be here.
I can tell that he is super outgoing and bubbly.
- So, let's do it. - [Rachel] Okay.
Let's try and find our bags.
- [Na'im] Yeah. That sounds like a great idea. - Yeah?
- [Na'im] That sounds like a great idea. - [Rachel] Okay.
[Rachel] I think these are our bags.
Well, let's take a look at what we got here.
[narrator] Rachel and Na'im have each brought a personal item with them.
Braided fishing line and hooks and a machete.
Oh, wonderful.
[narrator] They have also been given a pot for water and a fire starter.
Now we just need shelter.
So, let's see what we got here.
- So, it looks like this is where we are. - Yeah.
[Na'im] And so, the river runs right by us.
I think it's gonna be best to build a shelter
- near a source of water. That's the first thing. - [Rachel] Absolutely.
- Sounds good. - Maybe like a three-star hotel?
- Ow! Yeah. - Swimming pool.
Let's do it.
I'll try to keep us out of the thorns, too.
- No promises. - Good luck.
- [Na'im] Okay. - [Rachel] Yeah. 'Cause everything has thorns.
[Na'im] Whew!
Tell me a little bit about yourself.
What's your survival experience?
What do you enjoy doing?
- Well, I will be honest. - Uh-huh.
Most of my survival experience
- is in ocean environments. - [Na'im] Okay.
- So this is very much new territory for me. - [Na'im] Okay.
[Rachel] I am a free dive instructor
and for the last few years
I have been traveling full-time,
just diving in every possible body of water that I can find.
I use free diving to overcome my fear of the ocean.
Free diving is honestly an obsession for me.
At this point I can hold my breath for almost five minutes
and I've dove to 130 feet on a single breath of air.
I feel like people underestimate me a lot
because of my bubbly, outgoing personality,
but I definitely have a lot of mental fortitude
that I've learned through free diving
and I think that that applies to any situation.
I am always looking for ways to grow and ways to push myself.
You give me rain, I'll show you rainbows.
[narrator] As a free diver, Rachel has a high level of control over her body
and knows how to push her limits,
but might struggle to apply those skills in a jungle environment.
She begins with a primitive survival rating, or PSR, of 6.4.
- I don't have a ton of jungle survival experience either. - Okay.
Most of my survival experience
- is cold-weather forest. - Okay.
- But that being said, I think my skills are bushcraft... - [Rachel] Okay.
...rope-making, trapping
- and I would say I'm an intermediate fisher. - [Rachel] Okay.
[Na'im] I defy categories. I refuse to be put in a box.
I'm a never say die guy.
I have great endurance.
I've done over 50 long-course races.
I've run a full 26.2 marathon.
I've done a full Olympic triathlon.
I was a Boy Scout growing up.
We even had limited survival courses that we took,
Including wilderness survival, cold-weather survival.
When I moved to Colorado and I began hunting
is probably when I had to really engage my survival skills.
A lot of cold-weather camping.
So I do have a lot of cold-weather survival training.
I'm here to succeed.
So long as there is breath in these lungs,
I'm gonna make it 21 damn days.
[narrator] Na'im's cold-weather camping experience
gives him an edge in harsh environments,
but he could struggle without the aid of clothes and gear.
He begins with a PSR of 7.0.
Ow!
- Careful. - [Na'im] Yeah.
- [Rachel] It's so thick. - It is thick.
Ow! Mother goose, that was a good one.
- [Na'im] Oh, yeah. A thorn? - [Rachel] Yep.
[Na'im] Oh, man.
Ooh! [inhales through teeth]
[Rachel] This jungle is crazy.
She's definitely not gonna make it easy on us.
We're gonna have to work really hard to make it the full 21 days.
[Na'im] What is the one thing I should never do?
What's, like, if I do this to Rachel,
I will have very much screwed things up?
[Rachel] You can't leave.
- I can't leave. - [Rachel] I don't wanna be out here alone.
[Na'im] Okay.
[Rachel] So you're not allowed to leave.
Okay. Deal.
- Yeah? - Yeah, absolutely.
- You can't leave me alone out here. - We can't leave, yeah.
- I will not leave you alone. - Okay.
- Okay. - All right.
[Rachel] Look, I'm gonna cry just thinking about...
- [Na'im] I almost did, too. - [Rachel laughing] You did.
- [Rachel] Definitely getting more than a little thirsty. - [Na'im] Yeah.
[Na'im] Look at this.
- [Rachel] Oh, amazing. - We hit a clearing here quite a bit.
- Oh, this is so much more open. - [Na'im] Yeah.
- And I think I can see water just over this hill, so... - Oh, amazing.
- [Na'im] Yeah. So, great... - [Rachel] Oh, I can see water, too.
- [Na'im] I can see it, yes. - [Rachel] Okay.
The water comes right to the bank here.
We've got plenty of fallen wood.
We've got some clearing.
What do you think?
I see home.
- [both laughing] - Great.
So, obviously we're gonna wanna get a shelter up.
These trees over here might be nice.
- The one with the Y. - [Na'im] Yeah.
Um, that's good for a shelter. It's high.
We're gonna have a Y stick here,
and then we will have sticks coming off the back.
- [Rachel] We're gonna have to clear all of this out. - We're gonna have
- to clear all that out, yeah. - [Rachel] These cactuses and stuff, too.
[Na'im] Yeah, definitely.
All right. Let's give it a shot.
[Na'im] Timber!
All this is gonna have to go.
I'm feeling a little overwhelmed. [laughs]
I just feel like we have a lot of work to get done
and not a whole lot of time left.
First priority, grow more hands.
[Rachel] You think that's deep enough?
[Na'im] I think that's pretty good.
- I think that looks good. - With a crossbeam,
- we're gonna be good to go. - Okay.
- Perfect. Yeah. - Yeah, that's perfect. Yay!
Our plan for our shelter is to build basically a lean-to.
We're going to take a crossbeam through the tree,
and then put a little Y branch
on the other side to hold it up.
Ow! Biscuits!
And then just stack different logs and sticks over top of it
before we cover it up with brush
- to give us covering. - There we go.
- There we go. - Amazing.
- That's what I'm talking about. - Yeah.
[Na'im] I think my partner's fantastic.
I think we're gonna get along great.
I mean, we made a pact not to quit,
so I plan on keeping that bargain, hell or high water.
All right. I'm gonna go ahead and try to get down that bank.
All right. I'm gonna go ahead and try to get down that bank
- to get some water. - Okay.
Oh, this looks delicious. [laughing]
Like a nice big cup of coffee.
Okay.
Do you want me to start working on the fire?
- Yeah, yeah. Absolutely. - [Rachel] Okay.
[Rachel] The sun's starting to go down.
It's getting a little cold, so I'm going to try to get the fire started.
Fire's a very important thing to have.
Just try to help with bugs and keep us warm.
Because it does get pretty cold here at night.
[Na'im] Wait...
- [Na'im] All right. I see fire. - All right.
- [Rachel] Fire! - Teamwork makes the dream work, baby.
[Na'im] It's looking great.
[Rachel] We can boil our water.
[Na'im] All right. Here.
Let's tap it out, right?
I feel like we're doing good.
We've done some good work tonight.
Oh, I love our little home. It's coming together.
It is. I think we're gonna get through the night.
[Rachel] Oh, it's freezing cold.
[Na'im] This dang old fire's not cutting it.
- I can feel it and it got cold quick, too. - [Rachel] It did.
[Rachel] Ohh, jeez Louise.
[Na'im] It's cold.
Yeah.
[Na'im] Oh, sorry.
[Rachel groans]
I'm struggling tonight.
[Rachel shivers]
It is not easy right now.
Like, nothing is easy right now.
We're working our butts off to get this fire going
and keep it going because it's just so cold.
Oh, man.
It's starting to rain.
This is gonna suck.
This is all that's left of our fire and our firewood.
Oh, it's so cold.
[sobbing]
[Rachel speaking]
[Na'im speaking]
[Rachel] Oh, my God.
Oh, man.
Wow.
[Na'im] Last night was miserably cold.
- Like [bleep] got real. - [Rachel chuckles]
[bleep] got real.
[Rachel] Last night was
probably one of the hardest nights of my life.
As soon as that sun goes down, the temperature just plummets.
And I am not used to cold weather at all.
[Na'im] The temperature drop means we need to have
a fire going pretty much all the time.
[Rachel] Yeah, we need to stay on top of that.
[Na'im] We're trying to stay dry as much as we can,
trying to make fire,
so that we don't get hypothermia and pass out.
That's the one fear I can't fight back against.
- [Rachel] Um... - [Na'im] Mmm-hmm.
What if we take some of the mud
and just try to build some semblance of a wall
- with the clay? - I love it. I love it.
[Na'im] Let's do it.
Look at that. That's straight clay right there.
My partner had a wonderful idea to use some of this mud
to try and make a reflection wall.
And the idea is that heat rises,
that reflection wall is gonna push more of the heat toward us
and heat the inside of the shelter.
Someone once told me that the most important survival skill is creativity,
and my partner has it abounds.
I like puzzles.
- And I like being warm. - [Na'im laughing] Cool.
The fire will help to solidify the wall.
- It's pretty mushy and soft. - [Na'im] 'Cause it bakes it like a kiln effect.
- [Na'im] Yeah. - [Rachel] Yeah, harden it.
- [Na'im] And it's working. - [Rachel] It is working.
- Like, the fire is pretty small right now... - Uh-huh.
...but it's warm.
- Like, it's... It's nice. - See, that's what I'm talking about.
- It's freaking working. - That's what I'm talking about.
[Na'im] It might not be a bad idea to just start prepping some hooks.
[Rachel] Yeah. Prep some hooks. We could do that.
[Na'im] We probably burned quite a few calories shivering
and huddled up in the rain.
We need to get something to replace our calories,
so I'm gonna get some lines out in the water
and see if we can get some food,
see if we can get some protein coming in.
Grubs, grubs, where are you now?
Usually they're just, like, in pockets of soil here.
Ah!
Look at that. Wham bam.
Kind of like that.
That's pretty decent.
[Rachel] That's pretty good.
- Okay. - [Na'im] Let's just tie it off right here.
- [Rachel] A warn meal would be dope. - [Na'im] Yeah.
[Na'im] Hopefully we'll just get something to take a big gulp of it.
We're gonna see what happens.
[Rachel sighing] Ah. Oh, man.
[Rachel speaking]
[Na'im speaking]
[Rachel] It is.
I definitely don't think the shelter was any warmer last night.
- [Na'im] No. - [Rachel] Maybe it was less wet.
[Na'im] We gotta shore this shelter up
and get it as airtight as possible.
We just gotta get as much protection from the elements as we can.
And hopefully not freeze our balls off.
I mean, they're still there, but they're cold.
Ooh, I'm still cold.
[Na'im] The cold is really our most formidable challenge right now.
I mean, I'm accustomed to cold,
but no one goes out in the cold weather naked.
So, today is just about answering back.
We gotta get more foliage on our shelter,
more firewood.
Slowly but surely we're getting this shelter filled in.
[Na'im] I'm gonna go just grab mud
and slap it on the outside of this.
[Rachel] Work with what we've got and what we've got is mud.
We're just trying to figure out what it is we're missing to stay warm,
and we've decided that we're gonna try to cover the outside of our hut in mud.
Just to help give us some insulation.
[Na'im grunts] Every little bit counts.
- [Rachel] I feel like this is kind of working. - [Na'im] Yeah.
Wonderful.
That's it.
[Rachel] This is going to be better than last night.
It has to be. [laughing] It has to be.
It better be, yes.
[Na'im] All right. I'm actually gonna go check my traps real quick.
[Rachel] Okay.
[Na'im] A-fishing we will go.
Please gift us a catfish of Argentine origin.
It does not look like we've been gifted a catfish.
[sighing] Oh, man.
Yep. Well, the bait's still on it.
[sighs]
So, no luck on the fish today.
[Rachel speaking]
[Na'im] Yeah.
[Na'im speaking]
I think we've thrown everything we could throw into this problem. [chuckling]
I think the issue is just the temperature.
It just drops that cold. I mean... [Na'im speaking]
[Na'im speaking]
The cold is... It's beating me down, man.
My body's having a hard time dealing with that.
Yeah, it's taking a toll.
[Na'im] It's taking a toll.
[Na'im] It continues to get more and more cold,
and it's almost as though all of our efforts were for naught.
Oh, my God.
Oh, it's so bloody cold.
[Na'im] How are you doing?
Um, not great, honestly, but I am...
[in singsong] getting it done anyways.
- Not great physically or mentally or... - Yeah.
I just keep having, like, these dizzy spells and...
[Na'im] If you need to take a break or...
- [Rachel] What I need is food. - Yeah.
- [Rachel] That's what I really, really need. - Yeah.
- And I need protein. - [Na'im] Yeah.
We do need to get some food,
so I'm gonna go check that line.
[sighing] Okay.
Let's go check this line.
[Na'im shouting] Rachel!
[Na'im shouting] A-ha!
[bleep] yes!
[Na'im shouting] Rachel!
Whoo-hoo!
Ah! [laughing]
That sounds like somebody who caught a fish.
[Rachel] What'd you get?
- Catfish! - [Rachel] Ohh!
- Ah, I'm so happy. - [Na'im] Look at that.
[Rachel] We needed this.
[Na'im] Yes, we did.
This is a huge victory.
I cannot tell you.
This jungle has given us nothing.
Now it's just time to eat.
[Na'im] Here it comes.
[Na'im] Just take a little bite.
[Na'im] Yep.
[Na'im] There you go.
[quietly] I'm so excited.
[Na'im chuckling]
When I tell you that I could cry right now...
[Na'im laughing]
Wow.
[Rachel] I already feel so much better.
Thank you so much.
Yep.
This catfish is the biggest victory that we've had so far.
I'm feeling really excited about this partnership
and just really optimistic about what we can accomplish together.
- I'd love a little hot sauce, but... - [Rachel chuckling]
[Na'im] We have tried a lot of things to shore up the shelter.
Mud has been our most recent one,
but right now our shelter is still leaky and cold.
So, I am barking trees to make bark shingles,
so that we have some blockage
from the elements this evening.
You can strip large parts of bark off of that tree,
place it on our shelter and you should have
a waterproof structure at that point.
We wanna put them down in sort of bigger sections like this.
At the very least that will provide some protection
from the wind and stuff on that side.
[Rachel] It's looking good!
[Na'im] I'm hoping this works.
It may be kind of piecemeal, but...
I don't care what it looks like as long as we're warm.
[chuckling]
Truthfully.
[Na'im speaking]
[Rachel speaking]
[Na'im] It's night time,
and we have to answer the same question we've tried to answer
every day since we've been here, which is,
"Will we be able to stay warm and sleep tonight?"
[Rachel speaking]
[Na'im speaking]
[Rachel] I think this place is so fricking cold.
My toes are like freaking icicles.
It's continuously getting colder every night.
It's not... It's crazy.
[Na'im speaking]
[exhales]
[sighs]
Last night, I realized that, like,
we're in something that is capable of killing us.
When you are dealing with conditions like we're dealing with last night,
you are pushing your body to the edge.
I'm from a place where people die doing things that they enjoy doing.
Death has been so close to me
that I've learned to have a fear of it.
That fear is very present right now.
I think we've worked on this thing as feverishly as human beings can. [laughs]
[sighs]
I just feel like there's always a way to improve your situation.
There's always something you can do to make it better...
- [Na'im] Yeah. - ...and we just have to keep trying.
My body has taken a toll in the last couple of days,
but my will is telling me that I can do this no matter what
and just to keep pushing.
And it just kind of seems like Nai'm's head isn't quite in that same place
this morning.
Are you still in this?
I really don't wanna do this alone.
[sighs]
I know better than make decisions when you're cold and emotional. [laughs]
[sighs] But I gotta play this by ear.
Okay?
It's probably warm enough for me to go get debris and firewood.
Just let me warm up here for a little minute,
- if that's okay. - Okay.
[sighs] Oh, man.
[sighs]
At this point, I'm cold. I am upset at our situation.
I'm mad that we put so much effort
into trying to make sure that we didn't have this problem,
and it just all failed again.
[groans]
It's frustrating, but I'm going to have to keep pushing forward.
That's a promise that I made to my partner.
[sighs] Okay.
Man, I could fall asleep standing up.
I push my limits on the regular, with free diving.
There's times that my body is screaming at me that I'm not okay,
but I've build a mental fortitude through that
to push through it and push to the edge.
And with the cold weather, that's a whole different ball game.
Like, I don't know where the edge lives with that.
So I'm just gonna do what I have to do
to make the best of the situation that I'm in.
Killing it.
- [Na'im] Is it looking okay? - No, the fire's out.
[Na'im] Oh, [bleep].
- How's it going? - [Rachel] How's it sound?
[Na'im] Like it's taking a little while.
Oh, [bleep].
Uh.
So frustrating.
We're playing the same old game of trying to get warm.
[Na'im speaking]
I don't know what else we're supposed to do.
I don't what else we're supposed to do.
I don't like being cold. I don't.
[sighs] I'm so cold.
Come the [bleep] on.
Go get it.
[Na'im speaking]
[Rachel] No.
[Na'im speaking]
I just... I know where the line is for me at this point.
I gotta tap. I gotta tap out.
[sighs] Feels like winter.
- Outside, too? - Oh, yeah.
That might be the most miserable night of my life.
[groans] Oh, [bleep].
The effects of fighting the same battle over and over again
and losing it is taking its toll.
The cumulative effect of the cold, the lack of sleep,
just the general up and downs, I know where my limits lie, and I'm there.
I'm done.
[whispers] I'm done.
- Rachel? - Yeah?
I can't go anymore.
[Rachel] Okay.
What's going on, Na'im?
I am tapping out.
- Nothing that can be done? - [Na'im] No.
The last night I knew that, like,
I was reaching the edge of what I could give.
I'm all used up, man.
I just don't have any more in the tank.
[Ryan] All right. We'll get you out of here.
I appreciate every moment of this.
[Rachel speaking]
Please try to make it if you can, okay?
- [Rachel] I will. - I'm rooting for you.
Forget it. Good luck.
I got my butt kicked here, without a doubt.
I am leaving this jungle with cold feet and a tired mind.
The impenetrable jungle definitely won.
I think it's gonna be very difficult for Rachel to make it.
I don't know that she has the skills necessary to get her through this,
but I think she's damn tough enough.
[narrator] Unable to battle the cold front any longer,
Na'im quits the challenge, losing 21 pounds.
His PSR drops from 7.0 to 5.6.
My partner just tapped out, so that means I am on my own.
This challenge is incredibly hard,
and so the thought of doing this without Na'im is honestly terrifying.
But I have no other options.
Ooh. [exhales]
I gotta get this firewood, or it's gonna be a really long night.
I'm trying my best not to think and just do what needs to be done.
[sighs]
Doing this alone was the scariest idea for me,
but I'm really just trying to focus on one thing at a time
instead of looking at the grand scheme of things
'cause the grand scheme of it is terrifying.
But I can do one task at a time.
I can do one day at a time, and those will add up, and I'll be at extraction.
Like, I'm on my own. Let's make it work.
10 days by myself. I can do that.
[thunder rumbling]
I don't know where these clouds came from
because sunset was really nice.
And now all of a sudden, it's starting to rain.
[thunder clap]
Oh, gosh.
I'm definitely getting wet.
Holy crap.
Please, please, don't do this to me.
Oh, this thing's crazy.
I need to make this shelter more water and windproof
'cause it was so cold and wet last night.
[exhales]
[sniffs] Mmm.
I just wanna get warm. [cries]
Last night was rough.
It just really solidified the fact that I'm on my own now,
and this is what it's gonna be from this point out.
Gonna try to take the shingles off of the outside of the shelter
and see if I can enclose maybe a smaller space on the inside.
Keep some warmth in.
Keep the wind and water out.
There's definitely a lot less cold air coming in.
This is progress, and I'm feeling pretty good about it.
Ah! [giggles]
It's definitely warmer in my house now than it was. [laughs]
These shingles are helping so, so much.
[vocalizes]
[whispers] Okay.
I'm gonna have to get more firewood.
Ooh. I'm feeling a little topsy-turvy.
Ooh. Whoa.
Chill out. Stop spinning, world.
I feel terrible.
Ugh. I'm so nauseous.
This kind of comes in waves.
I am not feeling well today at all.
Dizzy and light-headed. Cramping.
My body just feels weak and deflated. I need food.
I hate how weak I feel. I don't enjoy feeling weak.
My body is screaming at me to replenish
and to give myself some sustenance, so I'm really focused
on getting new bait on the lines that are in the water.
I hope that getting food in my stomach will help settle it down.
'Cause this really sucks.
Looks like a good spot.
Okay.
Please, let this work.
Just need a fish.
I should go and check the lines.
All right.
Dang.
That's unfortunate.
Got a little bit of bait left.
Sometimes that's all it takes.
[groans] Jesus.
[breathlessly] Okay.
Just non-stop cramps and nausea.
[exhales] And I, like, can't function.
I might try to go find some of that pig's weed,
so I can get something in my stomach.
I'm just hoping that I can power through.
I just hope. [cries]
This challenge is so much more difficult than Naked and Afraid of Love.
It's really pushing me to the edge.
There's only so many thoughts I can go through before I land on, like,
"Why am I still here? Like, why am I still doing this?"
But I made a commitment to myself that I would see this through,
and I believe that you should be impeccable with your word, especially to yourself.
[sniffs]
[exhales]
[heavy breathing]
Ugh.
[exhales]
[sniffs]
[whispers] Oh, God.
I frigging hope it helps 'cause I can't... Ugh. God.
[deep inhale]
Whoa.
[groans]
Okay.
Still don't feel well.
Ugh. It's so bad.
[narrator] Consistent lack of food
leads to a build up of stomach acid and contractions,
which can cause intense nausea.
[Rachel] Physically, I feel absolutely terrible.
The pig's weed did not work.
This sucks.
I am in an excruciating amount of pain.
Like, I literally can't fricking do anything.
Like, I literally can't fricking do anything
without feeling like I'm about to throw up, and the cramps are killing me.
Gonna lay down for a second. Oh, Jesus.
Come on, man.
Get it together.
I'm in the home-fricking-stretch, and this is where we're at.
I want so badly to finish this.
Like, it's like a burning fire inside of me.
It's the only thing warm inside of me right now is my desire to finish this,
but my body is just in so much pain
that I'm seriously questioning whether I physically can.
No. I don't know if I can do this. [deep inhale]
I try not to cuss,
but there was a chapter of my life where I cussed a lot.
So to kind of phase that out, I just sort of put other little sayings in their place.
Things like biscuits and gravy.
Ow. Biscuits and gravy.
Whoa! Biscuits and gravy.
[laughing] Biscuits and gravy.
[exhales] Biscuits and gravy.
Biscuits.
Ow. Biscuits.
Biscuits.
Ow. Biscuits and gravy.
Ah. Biscuits and gravy.
Biscuits and gravy.
Ah! Biscuits and gravy.
We are okay.
Doing great, honey.
Ooh.
[whispers] Okay.
Get it together.
If I don't get fish, I just can't fathom how I'm gonna possibly
make it through this day feeling the way I'm feeling.
I'm gonna go check that hook I left in the water.
Thing's really stuck.
[screams] I got a fish!
Ah! [giggles]
What the freaking heck? Are you serious?
Wow! Oh, my God. I am so blessed.
This is honestly a ton of meat.
Mmm.
I am a very happy camper right now.
This fish is re-energizing my body,
giving me that extra boost I need to make it to extraction.
I have surprised myself.
So grateful.
So fricking grateful.
It is day 20.
Tomorrow is extraction day,
and based on insertion and how many thorns I was getting on my feet,
I think I really need to try to make some shoes.
I don't want to destroy me feet on the way out,
so I'm using the wood shingling off my shelter,
and I'm going to use fishing lines to kind of make this net for my shoes.
Ta-da! [laughs]
I'm just trying to make sure my feet are secured.
I've already been beaten up enough by this jungle.
I can't believe that tomorrow's day 21.
I was close to giving up a few times,
and it took literally everything that I had
to keep pushing, to keep going.
It's just another reminder to do the things that scare me, you know,
and, like, to do them even whenever you don't feel ready
because you're never gonna feel ready.
It's not until you're in the thick of it
that you find out what you're made of,
and I'm so happy that I kept pushing.
[sings] Extraction day is here.
Ooh.
Nice.
All right.
Check out this bad boy one more time.
So that looks like I'm just gonna head straight that way.
And then I'm home, free.
[narrator] To reach her extraction point,
Rachel must travel three miles north
through the dense, thorn-riddled, impenetrable jungle,
avoiding aggressive jaguars and deadly snakes
until she reaches a clearing, where she will be picked up by her extraction vehicle.
[Rachel] I'm not feeling my strongest,
and I'm gonna be hiking through some really thick vegetation.
Everything in this jungle has thorns. Everything's wet.
And I don't wanna tear my feet up on the way out of here.
Ouch. Ouch. Ouch.
Ooh! [sighs]
Onward. [groans] [whispers] Oh. gosh.
I feel like we just came past this.
It's definitely not easy to navigate.
I feel like I'm going in circles a little bit.
Oh, ew.
I don't know what left that.
Eugh. It's poop. I think it was recent. Ooh.
I'm so ready for this to be over.
[low growling]
[Rachel] What was that?
Get me out of this jungle.
Ugh.
Ah! Ah! Ow! Ow. Ow. Ow. Ow.
[cries]
[groans]
My body's telling me to quit, and I don't think I can take another step.
Ugh. [whispers] Okay.
But seeing this through is especially important.
Just like with free diving,
when you're coming up to the surface from a 50-meter dive,
and you're questioning whether you have enough oxygen
to make it through, as long as you stay relaxed and keep pushing,
you'll make it to the surface.
So as long as I stay relaxed and keep pushing myself, I'll make it to extraction.
I know that I am capable of doing whatever it is I put my mind to,
so that is just what keeps driving me forward.
It's freezing right now, and it hurts to move my body.
Oh. [grunts]
It's starting to clear up a bit.
Is this the road?
I'm just ready for this to be over.
This has to be it.
- [distant voices and engine rumbling] - I hear something.
[engine rumbles]
Oh, I definitely hear something.
[whispers] Oh, yes.
Oh, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes.
[whispers] Oh.
Oh. Are you my ride?
Oh, my gosh. I can't believe it.
[sighs] Ah, thank you.
This is it!
I can't believe it's over. [laughs]
I can't believe I made it.
I can't believe how freaking cold it is in this jungle. [laughs]
I learned that survival isn't just having a set of skills.
So much of it is about thinking on your feet
and being creative and adaptable.
Man, Na'im, I fricking wish you were here.
It's such an amazing feeling.
I fricking did it. [laughs]
I came into this questioning whether I had what it took.
The place where the jungle pushed me
was way beyond where I thought my limits lived.
In fact, I was able to show her
that I do have what it takes to survive.
[narrator] Over the course of the 21 days, Rachel lost 21 pounds.
Her PSR rises from 6.4 to 7.3.
Against all odds, even when my body is screaming at me to stop,
like, I can still keep going.
Honestly, I think this has changed me.
There's nothing that can stop me,
not even the impenetrable jungle. [laughs]
[screams and giggles] Holy freaking cow.
