Hey guys, my name is Lilly. Welcome to my channel.
And today, I want to thank all of subscribers
who have been watching my channel for the last ten years.
I've reached one million subscribers now which is completely crazy,
and I could not have done it without you.
Mine. [chuckles]
So, today, I have some really exciting news for you.
I have been chosen for the 21-day challenge of Naked and Afraid.
And this is completely, like, super crazy for me,
because it cannot get more extreme than that, right?
I am going to be surviving naked in the wilderness
in the American Southwest.
And it's completely different to my country, here in Austria.
We will see if I am able to adapt my survival skills
in a new environment.
Well, so this it. And I'll see you guys in 21 days.
This is my first time in the American Southwest.
And it looks so different than Austria.
This place looks really barren.
All I see here is grass, grass, and grass.
I don't see any water sources.
My biggest hope is that my partner is from this region
because this type of environment is really new to me.
So I really want to know what my partner thinks of this.
[Sam] This is nothing like home.
I'm a total fish out of water.
It's so exciting to be here.
I wanted this for so, for so long to be on Naked and Afraid.
And here I am. The first Englishman to be on this show.
And I'm here in the wild west in America.
I've never seen the horizon so far away.
It's an unbelievable feeling.
But my goodness, I don't mind admitting that I feel
very intimidated.
I can only hope that my partner has experience in environment like this.
This is no, no place for an Englishman.
[narrator] Sam and Lilly, two survivalists with extreme experience in Europe
will attempt to become the first foreigners to survive
twenty one days in the United States.
Their challenge will take place in the Sabinoso region of New Mexico,
a remote and untamed high desert in the American Southwest.
At an elevation of over 5000-feet, the region is known for its extremes.
Day time temps can soar in to the 90s.
But plunge into the low 50s at night.
Here we are. It's show time.
Oh my goodness.
There's not even a bush to hide behind.
[Sam] I've always enjoyed survival shows and being in the outdoors
since I was a little boy to be honest.
I've been a fan of Naked of Afraid since its inception.
I've seen every single episode.
Watched most of them several times.
Some of them dozens of times.
[Sam] So this is everything, I've ever wanted to do.
And I'm just so grateful to be here.
There's only one question left to ask.
Does my blur look big in this?
Let's roll.
[groaning in pain]
I'll be back.
[Lilly] I'm a survival enthusiast and about ten years ago,
I started my survival channel on YouTube.
Recently, I hit one million subscribers.
So I've trained for this challenge my entire life.
[Lilly] But Naked and Afraid is definitely the most extreme
survival challenge in the world.
I can't believe I'm doing this naked.
[grunts] It's really really hard on the feet, this terrain.
I'm just gonna have to keep toughen it out.
And eventually, I'll just get used to it, I suppose.
Man, this sun is really intense.
I don't know. It's going to get really hot today.
I'm really looking forward to meeting my partner now.
I hope that he's kind and respectful,
and that we make a great team together.
Hello.
Oh, hey there.
[Sam] Hello.
We finally meet.
I'm Sam.
Hey, nice to meet you.
[Sam] Nice to meet you too.
[Lilly] I'm Lilly.
I think I know you actually.
- Really? - Yeah, I think I follow you on YouTube.
- Oh, that's awesome. - Yeah.
I think I'm one of your fans. That's awesome.
- Oh God, I'm saved. - [both laughing]
- Yes. - Come on. Great, let's crush this.
Yes.
I've just met my partner. I'm really excited.
I was so worried who it was gonna be
and it turns out that it's survival Lilly.
I've watched many many of her videos.
In fact, I think a good majority of the likes she gets on her videos
probably come from here. [laughs]
Ah, you have a British accent, right?
- Yeah, I'm from England. - Awesome.
- And you're Austrian. - Yeah.
- Uh, wunderbar, expacen... - Wunderbar.
Great. [Lilly laughing]
When I was a little girl, I loved playing in the woods.
[Lilly] And this where I learnt most of my survival skills.
I'm self-taught, and mother nature was my teacher.
She is unforgiving.
At the beginning it was just a pure hobby. I didn't get paid for it.
And now I can even provide for my family.
Some of my friends call me the Austrian Chuck Norris,
because I like to go through really tough situations.
[narrator] Creating survival content is Lilly's full-time job.
But her skills in the American Southwest are untested.
She begins with a primitive survival rating or PSR of 7.1.
So two Europeans in the wilderness of New Mexico.
- That's crazy. - It's the most insane thing I could even imagine.
- It's a... - It's a strange environment.
I've never seen something like this.
It might as well be an alien planet to me, Lilly.
I've been into survival. I was a boy scout, army cadet.
I'm also a veteran. I was in the British army
for some years.
At my day job, I'm a mental health support worker.
I know that humans, all of us are capable of going through
far more than we can imagine.
And that's what I'm here to prove.
I want to know what that feeling of elation is
when you cross the finish line.
I must get to the end of this challenge.
[narrator] Sam's military background is a major strength.
But he lacks experience at higher elevations.
His PSR is set at 6.2.
I'm really hot, maybe we should go and get our bags.
- Anything to cover up just a little bit... - Yeah.
...sounds fantastic right now, Lilly.
[Lilly] Let's go. Come on.
[narrator] Sam and Lilly are each allowed one survival item from home
and are provided with a pot, and a fire starter.
So I got my custom survival knife.
[Lilly] My God, it's huge.
It's robust and it should hold an edge
- all the way to the end of the challenge. - Oh, wow.
Got my dog tags from 20-years ago.
[Lilly] Okay.
[Lilly] I like the fact that he is ex-military
and English guys are known to be tough.
So I'm really looking forward to have him in my team.
This is recurve bow, that I've shot over 12 years now.
So, I'm really accurate,
- and hopefully was can see some game... - [Sam sighs]
- ...that we can shoot. - [Sam] Absolutely gorgeous, Lilly.
[Lilly] Now, let's check out the map. We're here.
Here?
[Lilly] This looks like a canyon or something.
[Sam] Well, you know, I don't know much,
but it looks like water would probably collect down there.
Mm-hmm. May be we should go and check out of this area
- because I'm really thirsty. - I'm starting to feel it too, to be honest.
- Shall we head off? - Yes, okay. Let's go.
[Sam] Yes, ma'am.
[narrator] As they head north into the canyons,
Lilly and Sam will be competing for territory and food
with bobcats, mountain lions, and bears.
But it's the western diamond back rattlesnake
that presents the most danger.
This cold-blooded killer pumps hemotoxic venom into its prey
which attacks the blood and circulatory system.
Responsible for more bites than any other snake in the Southwest.
It causes the deaths of over ten people per year in the Unites States.
[Lilly] I really do hope that we find some water.
- [Sam] Yeah, it's, uh... - [Lilly] It's unbearable.
[Sam] It is.
I can already feel my saliva turning into foam.
[Lilly] Hey, hold on a second.
- We're descending. - We know water runs downhill.
Yeah, let's go and find some water.
[Sam] Oh wow, look at that.
[Lilly] Awesome.
If there's actual life down there, we might have a chance Lilly.
Yeah.
We come to this most beautiful breathtaking canyon
and we stand on top of a rock
and look out over the expanse of it.
And in the middle of this grass ocean,
it's just this oasis of life of water and hope.
[Sam] Do you think we should be out?
- We might be able to come and use these rocks... - [Lilly breathing deep]
...to kinda like giants steps
- to make our way down. - [Lilly] Mm. Definitely, yeah.
[rattlesnake rattles]
[Lilly] Hey, I heard a rattle.
What is this?
[Sam] I think we both know what it might be.
Quite an ominous sound. Because it can only be the sound of a rattlesnake,
one of the deadliest creatures in North America.
Do you want me to go first? You okay?
[Lilly sighs] You can go first.
- [Sam] Roger that. - [Lilly] I'm [bleep] in my pants.
- [Sam] You'll be okay. Well... - [Lilly] Uh.
- I don't have pants. - I was gonna say it.
[Sam] Oh [bleep].
Look at the size of that [bleep].
It's a [bleep] beast.
[Lilly] Oh, my God.
I'm, like, freaking out, because I'm really afraid of snakes.
[Sam] Let's just go very slow and careful.
I've heard that they can feel vibrations through the ground.
That's a lot of food.
We need a Y stick.
- That one there looks like a Y to me. - [Lilly] Yeah, take it down.
We're not gonna pass up an opportunity for a win
and for food, and especially when it's that much food,
that'll keep us going for the first three days.
This thing is well over a meter long.
That things can strike, definitely, its own distance.
Oh [bleep], it's coiled. It's coiled.
Get back, get back. Lilly, stay back.
[rattlesnake hisses]
[Sam] That's beautiful.
That thing is opening its mouth
and it looks the size of my hand
and it's got fangs as long as my fingers.
I think, I'm going to walk behind the snake
and pin it from the back side. I'm protected by the stone.
And once it's safe, it's your turn.
You put unlimited force down on its neck
- like it's [bleep] fine if you need to. - Yeah.
- We got this, Lilly. - Yeah.
- Let's go. - Slow and steady. It's gonna feel
your vibration through the rocks.
So just go, roll your feet slow and steady.
- I'll try and keep its attention. - [rattlesnake rattles]
So, I'm thinking you wanna come kind of down
at a 45 degree angle.
Lilly, you got this. Maximum force.
Go for it.
Go, go, go.
Right. Then strike this to clinch and let go.
I'll try to get him to... [grunts]
[rattlesnake hisses]
Right Lilly, I think you've nearly got him. Get that head right down.
- Maximum force. - [Lilly grunts]
- Everything you got. everything you got. - Kill it.
- Kill it. - Everything you got.
[Sam] Come on [bleep]. [grunts]
Kill it.
[both screaming]
[Sam] Right Lilly, I think you've nearly got him. Get that head right down.
- Maximum force. - [Lilly grunts]
- Everything you got. everything you got. - Kill it.
- Kill it. - Everything you got.
[Sam] Come on [bleep]. [grunts]
Kill it.
[both screaming]
[Lilly laughs]
[Sam sighs and pants]
The blade goes through it like it's made of butter
and the head is off, and all of a sudden the adrenaline
is just pumping through our bodies.
You're hero, Lilly. You're a hero.
- [Lilly exhales] - You were so brave.
Give me a fist bump.
- Oh! - Yeah.
[Lilly] I can't believe it. We did it.
Oh, my God.
We make a kill together and I think that's really good
for our team spirit.
- You ready? - Okay.
I think now we are real warriors.
Our first kill together.
First of many.
I'm grateful for Lilly for her courage in that moment,
because she kept me alive and I kept her alive
in a very deadly situation.
[Lilly] Tonight we're going to eat.
[Sam] Yeah, that's for sure.
- [Sam] Oh wow, look. - [Lilly exhales]
- Uh, oh, thank goodness. - Oh, my God, this is great.
Finally, we arrive at the bottom of the canyon,
dinner in hand and we see the water.
[Lilly speaking]
We should find something, which is maybe at a higher elevation,
but not too far away from the water.
One hundred percent agree.
Finally, we discover water down the canyon. But it is a flooding area
and we are searching for higher grounds to make a camp.
I think this is great because we have some shrubs at the back side.
This is where the wind is coming from.
And maybe we can use this tree here
to make some sort of emergency lead into shelter for tonight.
- I think we should probably deal... - Um...
...with the... See more of the snake.
I think you have peel off the skin now
because otherwise it's not minute cooling around,
it's going to be really hard to get it off.
- Oh, I didn't know that. - Yes.
Let's skin it quickly.
Being from United Kingdom, I've never cleaned a snake before.
[Sam] I mean, there's only three, in England.
So, it was all kinda new thing to me.
There he goes.
Come on.
Let's do it.
[grunts] It's a lot easier when you see it on the...
On this... Here we go, here we go.
- Come on, big sucker. - [Sam grunts]
That's a nasty, fat bugger.
You wanna go and then we'll go.
[Sam screams]
As I get to some bowels,
it decides to detonate utterly in my direction.
- [Lilly] Oh. [laughs] - [Sam] Oh, dude.
- Oh, my God. - [bleep] Ah.
I had snake excreta, in my eyes, all over my chest,
on my face, and dripping down my body.
[Sam] I think it's got in my eye.
- [Lilly] No. - [Sam] Yeah, just a little bit.
Dang.
It's alright, I've got a spare.
- [Sam] I got to wash the, uh... - [Lilly] Yeah.
- [Sam] the snake [bleep] of my bits and bobs. - [Lilly] Definitely.
It has pooped on him, so...
[chuckles] It's really, like, you can't imagine that this is really happening.
So, I can't believe it.
[Sam] Extremely funny.
[Lilly] Let's cut down this tree
because this is where the fire is going to be.
I've some seem logs over there which are perfect and yeah,
we just have to build a roof like this.
So we block out the wind.
On it.
[Lilly] I want to build a shelter,
and use some boughs of pine and juniper
to make it somewhat windproof.
[groans]
I'm getting really dehydrated.
So, right now, I'm collecting some dried grasses,
for building the fire, it's really important.
Is that high enough for you, Lilly?
[Lilly exhaling] Yeah.
- [Sam] We need to get that water. - Yeah.
[grunts] That water cranking quick sharp, Lilly.
[Lilly] Okay. I will try to make the fire now.
[scratching]
[Sam] Oh, Lilly! Look at you go.
What a savage! Look at that!
[blowing air]
[Lilly breathless] Oh, my God! Thank God.
[Sam chuckles]
[sighs wearily] I'm so relieved.
[Sam] Let's get some water and get hydrated.
[Lilly] The air's already getting colder.
- [Sam] Yeah. - I can feel it.
I actually think it might actually be
a little bit warmer than you think this evening, to be honest.
[Lilly] Mmm.
For you, maybe yes, but not for me.
[Sam] Uh...
I'm a sissy. [chuckles]
You're not.
I saw you, like, sleep out in the middle of the woods.
Yeah, but it was with clothing,
and naked, it's entirely different.
I only have, like, one hour left
and then, it's getting really cold.
[grunts]
My biggest fear is getting hypothermia.
So, we have to build a really nice bed,
- using these juniper twigs here. - [exhales]
[softly] This is perfect.
[Sam] We need to get our snake cranking soon.
- [Lilly] Yeah. - Uh...
- [Lilly] Do you want to do that? - Uh...
Yeah, I'm pretty sure we just coil it up on a stick.
- [Lilly] Yeah. - Uh, and then... [Lilly] Perfect.
[suspenseful music playing]
[Sam grunts] I've never had snake before,
but there you go.
One of the most deadliest predators
in the, uh, the United States,
and we're gonna eat him for our tea.
[serene instrumental music playing]
[groans] Oh, western diamondback.
- Alfresco! - [Lilly chuckles]
[Sam] Is this a "ladies first" situation,
or is this, shall I be the guinea pig here?
I think it's now gentlemen first.
[Sam chuckling] Oh, okay.
- [fire crackles] - Never had snake before.
[exclaims] Oh!
It's really good.
- [Lilly] Yeah? - That's chicken.
- Chicken? - [Sam] It's got lots of ribs, but it's chicken.
Mmm-hmm.
[Sam] Very chewy chicken.
I think when that golden brown colors come in,
I think we need to note that.
- [Lilly] Mmm-hmm. - I think that's about the cusp of...
perfection there. Cheers!
Cheers to you.
- [Sam exhales] - Our first snake.
[exhales] Not bad for two Europeans
in the American wilderness, huh?
[Lilly chuckles] Pretty good.
[dramatic music playing]
[insects trilling]
[Lilly coughing]
[Sam] You okay?
[Lilly] I'm cramping up a little bit.
[Sam] Get some water in.
Get some... Go on, get some fluids onboard.
[Lilly] Hmm.
[clanking]
[Lilly] It's okay. I'm just cramping.
I mean, it's like... I don't know.
[Lilly coughing]
[Lilly speaking]
I think my body wants to throw up.
[Lilly speaking]
[Lilly retching]
[Lilly coughing]
[Sam] You're okay.
[Lilly] I can't believe I'm throwing up the first night.
[Sam] But, it's standard.
Standard procedure.
[Lilly voice shaking] Yeah.
[coughing]
[Sam speaking]
[Lilly coughs, laughs]
[Lilly speaking]
[dramatic music playing]
That was our first night, and it was, like, okay,
- temperature wise... - [Sam chuckles]
...because we had a good fire going.
Survival Lilly.
- [coughing] - [Sam] Survival Lilly.
[exclaims excitedly] Oh-ho-ho!
[whispering] Okay, so...
we're gonna keep quiet from this point on.
We think we might have just seen some movement
from a small ground bird.
[suspenseful music playing]
[whispering] Lilly's just very quietly preparing her bow.
And we're gonna just have a very slow,
quiet patrol forward.
See what we can find.
[birds chirping]
Let's just, uh, get ourselves into this cover here,
and just have a little listen.
[continues whispering] Lilly, fresh!
It might have been one of those giant bunny rabbits.
[Sam whispering hoarsely] Seen! Seen!
Lilly, wow!
Okay, okay.
[Sam breathing heavily]
[Lilly softly]
[Sam whispering] But, Lilly, we know they're here now.
[Lilly whispering] Okay, I think we should head home now.
This is a great hunting place.
We will come back to it.
[Sam whispering] Roger, we've witnessed jackrabbit,
which is definitely,
definitely on our number one hit list.
[in normal voice] Before this adventure's over,
he's gonna be in our bellies.
[smacking lips and chuckles]
[dramatic music playing]
I'm tryin' to acclimatize my body
to the heat of the day.
The UV index right now, my goodness, it's incredible.
Even where the sun is cuttin' through
the little gaps in the roof, it's actually cookin' me.
So, it's like, but like,
tiger stripes sunburn.
I'm feelin' a bit helpless right now,
but I'm gonna be much more useless to Lilly
if, uh, she's having to drag me around
'cause I've keeled over with heatstroke.
I'm already feelin' the, uh, the heat wobbles.
- Should we start to... try and get some water. - [Lilly] Let's go.
- Yeah, let's go and get some water. - [Sam breathes heavily]
[thrilling instrumental music playing]
[Sam sighs in relief] Oh! That feels glorious.
[exclaims] Oh!
[chuckles]
You feel, like, my blood coolin' down
and then traveling up my legs.
Lilly, we've got some supper there.
- Is that a crawdad claw? - [Lilly] Yeah.
Crawdad's, uh, in here where the grass is.
[Sam] We'd need at least, like, 20 each, I guess.
For one meal, yeah.
- [Sam] For one meal! - [chuckling] Yeah.
That being said, I've watched videos
- where folks have dropped a pyramid shaped trap. - Mmm-hmm.
And the next morning it's literally...
- [Lilly] Full. - ...burstin'.
We can fish in, like, different kinds of, uh, traps,
and then see which one works best.
Yeah, yeah.
So, that stone's, like, wet an inch up.
[Lilly] Yeah.
There's no tide in here.
Maybe it's the water seeping down into the ground.
So, everyday we have less water.
Do you think it's worth us monitoring the water level
just to keep an eye on how low it's goin'?
Yeah.
[scraping]
All right, we'll see where we go from there.
[somber instrumental music playing]
[Sam] That's [blows] six-inches.
In fact, all these rocks were underwater last night.
I'm a little concerned that
all the water is dryin' up very fast.
[thrilling instrumental music playing]
[fire crackling]
I'm not gonna lie, Lilly. I find it very hard to even
find a little spot in that water hole,
to press the pot down deep enough for it to fill in.
What do you wanna do, Lilly?
How... How many days do we have left with this water?
Um... I think we've probably got 72 hours left,
but I think, as it becomes more concentrated,
it's gonna get very unpleasant to palette.
And there could be things in it that
we just can't boil out.
If we stay here much longer, like,
we're just gonna die of [chuckling] dehydration.
We might have to move.
[Sam] There's probably no, no water.
[Lilly] Oh, my God.
[Sam] We might have to move.
How would you feel if I went to scout a location?
We want to do it now in the heat of the sun?
By blocking shade, hot around there.
And if you wanna help you just really mud up.
- Really... - Yeah, let's go to the creek and... and mud you up.
[Sam] On day three, we marked the water level of our sour...
Of our water source,
and we've noticed that it's gone down significantly.
And if our source dries up totally,
we won't make it to the end of this challenge.
I just wanna make sure I'm totally, absolutely,
as sun-proof as I can possibly make myself.
[Lilly] Okay, see you later.
[Sam] See you later, Lilly.
I'm just gonna have a little look up at the canyon wall,
and I'm lookin' for somethin' that you might call, like,
a... a saddle. Basically like a crack,
that looks like a place where water might accumulate,
and drizzle down.
I'm just kinda darting from shade to shade.
I can already feel my mouth dryin' out,
and my thoughts startin' to... startin' to fog.
So, I need to push hard and fast now.
[dramatic music playing]
[Lilly] Sam, is going for scout,
if he can find something better than this.
While he's gone, I'm going to be making
a crayfish trap.
We need some kind of filling material for the trap.
And sometimes, it works if you carve off the bark.
[scraping]
With a trap, we don't need to actively hunt.
The trap is going to passively provide us with food.
[somber instrumental music playing]
[Sam] I'm seein' a lot more shaded area,
I'm seein' a lot more flora,
I'm seein' a lot more growth.
Uh, this place seems...
[sighs] daresay...
ten times more verdant than where we've been.
[sighs in relief] Oh! Oh, that feels so good under foot.
Hey, what's goin' on here?
What is this?
[exclaims excitedly] It's water!
- Oh, my God, it's flowin'. - [cheerful music playing]
To find water like this, this fresh,
and literally just comin' out of the ground,
might be the thing that takes us to day 21.
[sucking and gulping water]
[chuckling]
[sighs in relief] Oh, God!
We needed this, we needed this immediately.
I'm gonna get covered, so I don't get burned.
And then, uh, it's time to make, uh,
hotfoot it back to Lilly.
But I think she'll be as excited as I am about this,
the prospect of water.
[breathing heavily] Let's go.
[taking deep breaths]
[birds chirping]
[Sam breathes heavily]
[Lilly] Hey, buddy, how are you?
[Sam breathing heavily] I'm all good.
I've been on a little bit of an adventure though.
About a kilometer that way,
there is a beautiful, fresh runnin' seep.
- [Lilly] Ah! - The area looks verdant.
It looks like there's
a reasonable amount of firewood as well.
When you're ready,
we'll go on a, a little... migration.
[Lilly] Tomorrow, we go.
[Sam] Yes, ma'am.
I'm sad that we're leaving this place because...
we were just about to make this our home.
But if the water is running out,
we have to leave anyway.
I think I'm done with the trap.
Now let's see if the cone fits inside.
[Sam speaking]
- [Lilly] Yeah. - [Sam] Nice.
I think that's a tight seal.
[Sam] Okay, straight down?
[Lilly] Yeah, don't touch me.
- [Sam chuckling] I get that a lot. - [Lilly exclaims] Oh!
[Lilly grunts]
[Sam] You really wanna just...
- [Lilly] All right. - [Sam] Okay.
[Lilly] It's baited.
- [Sam] Okay. - Put it underneath the stone where you are standing.
- [Sam] Oh, underneath it? - Yeah.
[Sam] Okay.
[Lilly] Now we need a little bit of foliage
and cover everything up.
We want to create some kind of shady place,
and this is where they like to hang out.
- [Sam] Where they think they're safe. - Yeah.
[Lilly] Safe against predators.
- [Sam] Just like that, yeah? - [Lilly] Yeah, perfect.
[dramatic music playing]
[insects trilling]
The end of day four.
We've got another big day tomorrow, day five.
Uh, 'cause we're headin' out
for a beautiful, fresh, cold seep.
We're gonna be optimistic,
and we'll see what we get tomorrow.
What's our Naked and Afraid team name?
So, we got Sam and Lilly.
Are we Team Silly?
- [Lilly laughing heartily] Team silly! - [Sam laughing heartily]
- [Lilly] Team Silly, yeah. - [Sam] Whoo!
Good night.
[dramatic music playing]
[Lilly] We have to eat something before we go
because we need the energy.
[Sam] Lilly has constructed the most beautiful fish trap.
An absolute masterpiece of form and function.
- [Lilly] Hey, we got one. - [Sam] No!
- [Lilly] We got one. - Let's have a look.
Lilly... well done, well done.
It brought us a little win today.
A sizeable crawdad to share between us.
- [uplifting music playing] - Thanks to her hard efforts.
And we're gonna have ourselves
a little breakfast before we set off.
We have to make ourselves a couple of sets of chopsticks,
I think, when we get to the... The new location, as well.
Bon appetit. Cheers.
[both exclaiming] Mmm.
They are good.
So, what's next on the agenda?
Let's get moving.
I like the sound of that.
[hissing]
[Sam] I'll follow you.
Say, "Bye, camp."
- [Lilly] Bye! - [Sam in high-pitched voice] Bye, camp. [chuckles]
[Sam in normal voice] Indigenous tribes of the area
would use a device called a travois.
It allows a large amount of equipment
to be dragged with relative ease over rough terrain.
So, we quickly threw together
a down and dirty version of this
-for our bedding, uh, some yucca, -[breathing heavily]
and set off into the unknown.
As we move down this path, Lilly,
the terrain's gonna change, and so is the flora.
I think you're gonna like it.
I'm just gonna try and find a way to maneuver
across to the other side.
- [Sam panting] - [Lilly] You can do it, man.
[Sam] I got it.
Just don't wanna break a toe.
[Sam breathing heavily]
[grunts]
[Sam] The altitude is kicking my ass.
The altitude we're at,
this reduced oxygen in the atmosphere,
compared to England, I can barely breathe.
[suspenseful music playing]
Now, if I'm not mistaken,
I don't think we're too far now.
We might even start to hear a gentle trickle soon.
[continues breathing heavily]
Follow me.
[Lilly] Oh, my God. Look at that.
You found a spring.
[Sam] Oh, yeah.
[Lilly] Good job! That's so great.
[Sam] It's perfectly fresh, I promise.
Have yourself a little drink.
- [Lilly] Thank you. - Go figure out your technique.
I just find... just lying right down
and then getting my face in there.
[Lilly] We could have actually blocked this entrance.
Then the water will raise higher, you know?
[Sam] That's a good idea.
- Oh, that's why I love ya. - [Lilly whispers] Okay.
Okay, let's find a good shelter location.
- [Sam] Okay. - [Lilly] Let's go down this way,
and search for a place where we have more firewood available.
[Sam] Okay.
- [Sam] Can you see this? - Actually I like this place
because we can walk around a lot,
it's easier to traverse.
You know what? Could you get some stones
and you just place them here, around here,
this is the backside of the shelter, okay?
Yeah, so it's like aerodynamic, so the wind will just,
- shape itself around it. - [Lilly] Well, yeah.
[Sam] I think that's a good idea.
[narrator] Built on a solid rock wall foundation,
with a log feeding fire pit in the middle,
Lilly's shelter plan is inspired by a wickiup,
a comical, Native American design
that minimizes wind resistance.
I want to build a stone wall for my shelter because...
At higher elevation you have more wind,
and we need our shelter really strong and good enough
that we can survive to day 21.
Maybe we should put in the trap right now,
to make sure that we have something in the evening.
[Sam] Yes, so it's working straight away.
We'll build a wall I promise,
- I'm just lodging them in at the moment. [chuckles] - [Lilly] Okay.
I'll try to get us some water.
[Sam] Oh, that would be wonderful actually, I'm starting to gasp.
[Sam] I'll be able to do shot putt for, uh,
England, when I get out.
Our intention is to construct the wall of our shelter,
from heavy rocks,
just to give us a little bit of protection,
but it's really quite exhausting work.
[Sam sighs] Ooh.
[sighs]
Wow, really awesome,
I like the wall.
[Sam sighs] Well, what to say?
To go really thick this one,
really thick, that one.
[Lilly] Pretty good job.
Oh, my God,
look at this.
[Sam] What is it?
It's the brevage was, um,
put here by water.
[bleep]
If it really rains that much,
it might destroy the wall.
Okay.
But we also can use,
I mean we can move to this spot here
which is a little bit higher.
That's a lot of tons for me to...
- this is literally a ton of stones, Lilly. - [Lilly] Yeah.
[clicks tongue] I think, we are making a mistake,
we should correct it right now.
I believe that,
masses of water have come through the canyons,
so, I don't know if we should stay or not.
[Sam] I think this whole place floods, Lilly,
I think from one side of the canyon
to the other, floods.
I have to, uh,
- trust my gut feeling and then says... - [Sam] Okay.
- [Lilly] ...it can flood. - So, if it rains, it rains,
what's the point in moving all this?
[Lilly] It's going to destroy the shelter
and then it's gone and,
- you know, it's not too many rocks. - [Sam] I'll tell you what.
- I'll help you with the rocks. - [Sam] Uh, no, stop.
What I'm gonna say now
is the camp situation is gonna have to,
slow right the [bleep] down now,
because, I've just gone really fast
- to do that. - [Lilly] I know, I know, I know.
We are making a mistake,
it's my fault because I told you to...
you should build a wall here,
so now I have to correct the mistake
before you spend too much care with.
Please hear me out,
if it destroys the shelter and it's gone,
I would be happier to build a new one there...
- [Lilly] Okay. - [Sam] ...than to [bleep] take that beast down
and move Castle Grayskull all the way over there.
[Lilly] The problem is,
if this is getting destroyed...
- [Sam] If this washes away... - [Lilly] You know...
[Sam] ...if this washes away, Lilly,
I'll build it again, -I promise. - Okay.
Then let's stay here, and, if this really like
gets flooded and destroyed, we have to rebuild it.
- I will let you give me one in the face... - [Lilly] If the flat space...
...or two in the chest,
really good ones as well, yeah?
And start calling me everything under the sun,
and then when we come back down here
and it's all epically washed away, yeah?
And my PSR has plummeted and yours is rocketing up,
I'll rebuild it again.
- [Lilly] Okay, deal. - [Sam] There.
Thank you. All right?
- All right. - I love you, okay?
[Sam] I love you too, I really do.
We did have a little bit
of a back and forwards about this,
but thankfully myself and Lilly
have a really good rapport,
and we're able to come to consensus.
Lilly did agree with me,
and I was very grateful for that.
Let's stay here, maybe we are lucky with the weather.
[Sam] Lucky? Yeah, and if we're not,
you can finish [bleep] Naked and Afraid,
and we're made to flip it...
we're carved out a granite.
[Lilly] In the end, Sam convinced me to stay,
so in a survival situation
you definitely want to have a partner
that you can get along because if you work together,
you have a higher chance of completing this challenge.
[Sam] Thank you. All right?
- I... I really... - [Lilly] Thanks to you,
I know this is hard work.
Let's finish the wall
- and build a shelter here tomorrow. - [Sam] I like it.
Night five,
we're at our new camp,
we've got like a two foot brick wall
around us, we're talking about
putting a nice roof on, all insulated,
um, but, um,
until that time,
I don't think either of us can think straight
until we've had a good night's sleep.
We'll see everyone in the morning.
[bear roars]
[Sam speaking]
[Lilly speaking]
[Sam speaking]
[Sam] It sounds like it's getting pissed off.
[Lilly speaking]
[Sam speaking]
[Sam] Hey! Hey, bear. [whistles]
[Lilly] Hey, bear! Hey, bear!
[Sam] It's up, we just keep talking,
we just talk like us.
We've just heard a big rustle in the bushes,
20 meters, 25 meters max from our camp,
uh, a splash of water
and I think we just disturbed something.
Something sizeable that
might have been taking a drink.
[Lilly] I think it has taken off.
[Sam] Yeah, yeah, if it's got any sense.
[Lilly] We need a shelter, we are completely exposed.
[Sam] Right. Oh, my God.
Whoa.
[sighs]
Um, that was some scary [bleep] last night.
Yeah it was scary.
This is a predator prone, area.
Whatever it was, it was,
not that concerned by us.
But I think it did not hunt us,
it just wanted to have a drink,
in the canyon.
Because there's no place else
where the animals can drink, right?
So, they come here in the night and drink.
With the amount of predators out here,
- I think today we need to focus on shelter. - [Sam] Yeah,
- shelter and then as soon... - Firewood.
[Sam] ...as soon... yeah, shelter and firewood.
All right, let's, uh, best guess is better hop to it.
I can rebuild the shelter
higher here than at the back,
then we can both crawl out of the shelter here
and then, this will be the lo... low point,
okay?
- Can we go down to the ground? - [Sam] Yes, probably.
There you go.
[Lilly] So.
Lilly has had the idea for us to place a wikiup,
uh, which is almost like a pyramid structure,
and this is actually a design that's used in this area
for thousands of years,
by local tribes.
It's simple to construct, it's robust and strong,
just to give us a little bit of extra protection
from animals and also from the environment.
[Lilly] Time to put on some bark onto our roof.
[Sam] Basically just like you would on any
household roof as tiles.
If and when it does rain,
the water should run straight off our shelter,
and keep Lilly and myself dry,
even in quite a torrential downpour,
- but that's the plan, isn't it, Lilly? - [Lilly] Yeah.
[Sam laughs]
[Sam] Whoa, a bark scorpion shedding.
The front of the carapace is open like
it's crawled out from inside.
He's shed his shell,
and he's running around somewhere.
It's probably a chonky boy now,
- watch your fingers, Lilly. - [Lilly] Mmm.
[Sam] I think they have a really potent sting, you know.
[Lilly] Yeah, we have to be careful.
New shelter, which
still needs a lot of finishing touches but
we'll continue to complete
and work on it for just a few days,
but, uh, the beauty of this shelter is that,
it's functional at every stage of its construction.
Lilly has just gone down to check the fish trap.
Just wanted to show you like
one of the things that's becoming a staple of this
- challenge for me... - [Lilly] Hurry up!
What... wha... I'm coming, I'm coming!
[Lilly speaking]
Oh, my God. Lilly, well done!
[Lilly] It's huge.
[Sam] Oh, my God.
Oh, we got to do!
There she is, ladies and gentleman.
We have the biggest
crayfish ever.
[Sam] Let's have a look.
- Oh, my goodness, he's a monster. - [Lilly] Whoa!
- Whoo-hoo! - Well done, Lilly.
[Lilly] Let's put it back in.
Straight away the trap's going back in to start
working again.
- Yeah, man. Whoo! - Oh, my God.
[Sam chuckles]
- [Lilly] Bon appetit. - [Sam] Bon appetit. Cheers.
[Lilly] Yeah.
[Sam] Savage, Lilly.
Oh, so good.
[Sam] Oh [bleep].
[Lilly speaking]
[Sam speaking]
[bleep]
[Sam speaking]
[bleep] Ah!
I thought it was coals hitting me,
it's bit me about three [bleep] times [bleep].
Ah! [bleep]
I just like you to just make sure
he's not on my [bleep] back.
[Lilly] Yeah, come here.
Turn around.
Can't see anything.
Where did he bite you?
Under my arm, everywhere man, [bleep] everywhere.
I think because my... the bark that is shingling
the roof of my bed, is fresh,
uh, it's, uh, former residence, uh,
having to find new homes
and this one decided to make its home in my armpit.
[Lilly] It's a tree bark scorpion
which is non-venomous.
[Sam] Oh, my God.
Worse thing is,
he's probably still running around in there.
[shivers]
[Lilly] So, Sam got stung by a scorpion.
Sam, how you doing?
Um, a bit stiff, still a bit stiff,
uh, it's a very strange sensation,
you get the additional sting and then
this horrible numbness that spreads out
and the... the psychologically impact
of knowing that there's a scorpion as big as your hand
running around your bed,
kind of put me off sleeping a little bit last night,
I got a few hours.
Yeah, I'm really sorry that this happened to you.
[Sam] You don't have to sorry for it.
- It's like... - [Lilly] But it sucks because it was the first
great night and then you got stung by a scorpion.
- [Sam] Three times. - And then you could not sleep any more
because you were completely like,
full of adrenaline and everything.
[Sam] This place does not like me.
[Sam sighs deeply]
[Lilly] It's raining.
It has just started to rain.
Hunkering up inside of the shelter.
[Sam] The temperature is dropping
significantly and rapidly.
[Lilly] I get pretty strong
when it comes to my survival skills,
but when it comes to the cold...
[Lilly speaking]
[narrator] Severe thyroid conditions
such as Hashimoto's disease can slow down metabolism,
which causes a drop in the body's core temperature.
[Sam] Preparing for the worst and, uh,
hoping for the best.
The darkness has come now,
and, uh, it is significantly colder
- than it was yesterday. - Mmm.
I mean it's cold enough now
that I can feel my toes being cold,
and it's absolutely bitter.
- This is the coldest night we've had so far. - [Lilly] Mmm.
But we're trying to get some sleep.
[Sam] Ah.
Lilly.
Sweet sunshine.
[Lilly speaking]
[Sam] Sun's coming.
That was a [bleep] good jack.
Yesterday, we had our first significant rainfall,
and yeah, kept raining and raining and raining,
but actually only one could lie down because,
the shelter is not wide enough,
so, one person always ha... had to sit.
So, today we have to expand the shelter,
so we both have room.
Today, we're making a shelter,
- that's more important. - [Sam] Well... well... well, we can do it all.
To finally get this shelter complete,
and bring it in line with Lilly's vision,
all we need to do is mirror
the existing side of the shelter,
which would give us two clamp shelves
with a gap in the middle for our long fire,
and by this evening,
we'll have a reinforced insulated shelter.
- [Lilly] Nice. - [Sam] Yeah.
- [Lilly sighs] - [Sam] Okay.
This is so much better.
[Sam] I'm gonna sleep comfortably tonight
and so are you.
Oh, God.
Oh, the cold's kicking,
- we can't sleep. - [Lilly] Yeah.
- [Sam] It's gonna be a long night. - [Lilly speaking]
[Sam] Yeah, of course.
I've... I've got a huge pile here.
[Lilly] Yeah, please.
This log is burning really hot,
but look, back here the stone is ice cold.
I can feel the cold.
It's so crazy.
We're making all... all attempts
to regulate our body temperature
by, uh, consuming plenty of hot drinks as well
to try and keep our core body temperatures up as well.
We're just gonna cook our way
through this, whatever we have to do.
[Eagle screeching]
[Sam] Oh, God.
- [Lilly] Ooh, it's cold. - [Sam] It is, it's very brisk.
It is looking like we'll get some rain later.
I can't believe the weather's changed
so significantly, so quickly,
I just didn't expect the high dessert
to be freezing, to be honest but,
we've gone from a hot weather challenge day
- to a cold weather challenge. - [Lilly] Yeah.
[thunder rumbling]
Oh, it sounds like it's got worse coming in as well.
What worries me is the rain so,
if it's really going to rain, then we have a problem.
[Sam] If... if I'm open and honest,
it really worries me too,
'cause obviously that night... we had the other night
where it was super cold.
That combined with rain
- could actually end up doing us both. - [Lilly] Yeah.
For nor... normal person,
this would feel fine, but
I'm already cold at my back, so.
- Are you, really? - [Lilly] And that's
because I have this, um, Hashimoto's thyroid disorder.
And it makes me more susceptible to the cold.
And because I'm thin. So that's two things at once.
- Yeah. - Are you okay, yeah?
Yep.
[Sam] I'm deeply concerned about Lilly
and her body's ability to regulate its body temperature.
So whereby, I may be cold,
Lilly might feel the cold to be five or ten degrees lower.
As long as the coals are hot, it's okay.
As long as it's not a downpour, we are fine.
[thunder rumbling]
[Sam] Oh, [bleep].
[Lilly] It's raining.
[Sam] Here we go.
It's getting heavier.
Oh, [bleep].
It's coming in sideways on me. [laughs]
[bleep]
[Lilly] I need more firewood.
Quickly.
[bleep]
I don't have big firewood.
It's only going to last 20 minutes.
Blow into the fire.
Quickly.
[groans] The roof is leaking more than I thought.
[Sam] What shall I do?
[Lilly] Just blow into the fire.
- [Sam] Okay. - [Lilly] Just blow in.
[Sam] Come on!
Come on, cut us a break.
[Lilly] Blow.
Blow, blow, blow.
[Sam coughing]
[bleep]
This [bleep].
I just can't.
[sighs] [bleep]
[thunder rumbling]
[bleep]
[Sam] This [bleep].
I just can't.
It's [bleep].
[Lilly] Hold on. I'm making a separate fireplace here.
Just blow into the fire.
Blow, blow, blow.
I've got no puffs left.
- I've got no puffs left, Lilly. - [Lilly] It's okay.
[Lilly] I have a new fire here.
[Sam] So can I come over, Lilly?
'Cause... I'm [bleep] here, uh?
[Lilly] Yeah.
Come.
[Sam] I'm bringing what bedding I can.
[Lilly] I quickly made another firepit inside of my shelter.
And this way, I could save the flame from going totally out.
[Lilly] Hold on. Hold... Watch out.
- [Lilly] Sit. - [Sam] Ow, ow, ow.
[Lilly] Okay. I think it's good.
- [Lilly] Yeah! Whoo! - [bleep]
-[Lilly laughs] -[Sam] Look at you! Look at Lilly!
Can't believe you actually just like,
dug a firepit and just manifested a new fire like that.
[Lilly] Yeah.
- [Sam] That quick. - [Lilly] Okay, just stop it, okay?
[Lilly speaking]
[Sam] And we ain't gonna quit till the [bleep] drag us out of here.
[Lilly] Surely not.
- [Sam] Well, that was exciting. - [Lilly] Yeah.
[Lilly speaking]
- But it's even colder. - [Sam] It's for sure.
[Sam] It's so cold. It really is bitter.
It's unbelievable. [sighs] It's... If... if...
If this is how the rest of the challenge has to progress,
it's gonna be slow-going.
Are you warm enough?
[Lilly] If I conserve my energy the next day, then I will be fine.
I just want to make sure that the fire doesn't go out.
It's just a case of firewood.
- I can wander off and drag some of that back. - [Lilly] Yeah.
You just concentrate on keeping warm or keeping dry
and keeping rested.
I will do water as well as soon as I'm back, okay?
[Lilly] Yeah. Thank you.
- [Sam] I love you, babe. - [Lilly] You're my man.
[Sam] I'm doing my best.
[Lilly] Oh, nice.
I'm just gonna go backwards and forwards and just get everything.
[Lilly] Okay.
[Sam] Since we've been out here,
Lilly's shown me every step of the way,
the breadth and depth of her skills.
But uh, this morning, it's led to me understanding
exactly how hard it's been for Lilly,
regarding her vulnerability to the cold.
And primary concerns at the moment is firewood, firewood, firewood.
We need a lot more firewood to keep her warm
and it's absolutely imperative in my mind now
to keep that immense knowledge of hers ticking
and keep her in the challenge,
so we can fight through to the end together.
[Lilly] Thank you so much for your merch.
[laughs] Doing my best.
[sighs] Let's hope it's enough.
I... I'll keep going... Until it gets too dark.
- You're doing a... a great job, okay? - [Sam sighs] I'm trying.
[Lilly] It's really cold.
The fire's small. I need a bigger fire.
[Sam] To be honest, I might have to spend more time just getting wood like,
all that wood I collected earlier on, we'll be done through it.
[Lilly speaking]
[groans softly]
[exhales]
We've been burning significant amounts of firewood at night.
And it might be a resource
that we've suddenly stripped from the area for the time being.
So, have to go further afield
to try and find more firewood to drag back.
- [Sam pants] - [Lilly] Thank you, man.
[clears throat]
- [bird squawking] - [Lilly] Hear this?
What kind of bird is it?
Edible, I should imagine.
Do you wanna go and have a look?
- I can't, it's too cold. - Sounds big.
But I can't leave the camp. It's too cold.
[Sam] Okay. [sighs]
[Lilly] I want to go hunting as much as I can.
But the problem with the cold is that
it makes me a prisoner to the shelter and to the fire.
So, I cannot do the things that I would like to do.
[Sam] I... I'll go and grab some more firewood.
[Sam sighs]
[Lilly] I'm supposed to be the provider,
but with the cold, I'm not able to do that.
[grunts]
Oh, the strength is just draining out of me now.
Can't even snap a twig.
[Sam] Getting more and more exhausted.
My arms are aching,
every muscle fiber in my body is torn.
And in my mind I'm wondering whether I can keep this pace going for another ten days.
I'm feeling it today.
My joints are just wretched.
[exhales]
[Lilly] I've been cold and miserable for a couple of days now.
Sam's getting most of the firewood.
And because I get so cold, we have to get a lot.
I can see that it's wearing him down
and I feel really guilty about that and bad,
and I feel that I'm dragging him down.
[Sam] Ah!
[bleep]
- Been blasting too much. - [Lilly] Mmm.
It's ridiculous
'cause I've got to go so much further afield now.
- [Lilly] Yeah. - Um, it's gonna start crushing me really bad.
[Sam] 'Cause don't get me wrong,
I don't want the fire to go out either
- under any circumstances. - [Lilly] Mmm.
But I don't need it cranking at like, 100 degree Celsius like you do.
I'm getting very worried.
Look, I'm... I'm not gonna make it myself.
[Lilly] I'm sorry.
[Sam] Well, it is what it is.
[Lilly] I appreciate you, okay?
[Sam] I appreciate you.
We'll be okay, all right?
I'm gonna keep getting more.
[Lilly] So, I'm still really cold,
and I don't have enough energy,
but I'm going to go hunting
because food is really the one thing that we need right now.
I don't want to be a burden for Sam.
But I need like, three times more firewood than him
and that really drags him down.
And I want him to finish the challenge, so.
I either have to get some food or I have to leave.
I feel like if we continue like this,
he's better off alone.
Got it.
I think I nicked a lizard but.
I don't know where he is now. [chuckles softly]
Where are you?
He's hiding in some kind of hole.
I can't get to it.
Oh.
[bleep]
Too hard to move around here.
We really need some protein today.
I have no energy left.
[pants]
It's not sustainable.
Oh. [pants]
And it's because of me.
[chopping wood]
[Lilly] Sam.
Sam!
Come here.
[Sam exhales]
Any sign?
[Lilly speaking]
So...
You know we have this firewood problem?
You were collecting a lot of it
because I need like, three times more than you?
So I really appreciate that you did so much for me,
but now I feel like I'm a burden for you.
- No. - Yes.
- Never. No. - I know it because
you're spending too many calories getting firewood for me
because if you were on your own,
you would not need that much.
And I want you to make it to the end of the challenge.
So I decided to leave.
I'm going to tap.
And that's... it sucks.
But now, I feel that I'm... I'm at the end.
- Now is the time to separate. - No.
No, no, no.
Lilly,
I've been a burden to you up until this point.
- I've had half... - No, you have not.
Please, I've heard you. Hear me.
I've had half your food, yeah?
You are not dragging me down.
You've lifted me up when...
At this start of this challenge.
You said you can't do it anymore.
- And you know why? - Because I'm burning out.
I... I'll tell you why.
Because I was low and I was tired and I was being weak.
Yeah?
And I should've been stronger than that.
And I shouldn't have vocalized what was a doubt in my mind.
I shouldn't have said that.
You're not a burden to me.
- You risk not making it because of me. - It... it's...
I risk not making it every single day I'm here.
Because that's what the challenge is.
I... I would much rather you be in here with me.
I mean, I have to exert myself 20, 30% more than I would ever if I was on my own.
I'm... I'm getting to 21 even if I have to [bleep]
even if I have to crawl, even if I'm bones, skin and bones.
Which I might be anyway.
But I want you with me.
I want... I want us to do 21 together.
And I know you can do it.
Yeah?
Let's try absolutely every trick in the book
before we come to this decision, please?
I'm begging you.
We'll do whatever it takes to get by.
Yeah?
Do you want to ride to day 21 with me?
Do you wanna try?
- Yeah. - [chuckles softly] Come on, let's try.
[Lilly crying] Okay.
[sniffles] Let's try.
[Sam] And I'm sorry for doubting myself and doubting you.
[both crying]
[Sam] I don't... I don't want you to separate from me.
I don't care what I have to do.
But we're gonna do it, all right?
I [bleep] mean it.
- [Lilly] Mmm. - Okay?
I [bleep] mean it.
Um... - [both giggle] -[Lilly] Okay.
[Lilly sniffles]
And I'm sorry.
You're not a burden. You're not a burden.
- Come on. - [both sniffling and crying]
God, I need a drink.
I can see in Lilly's eye that she's not done.
She's not ready to tap.
She's an enormous asset to me just by being here.
And I can't see her tap. I can't see her fail.
If we're gonna do this challenge,
we're going all the way to the end,
and we're going together no matter what it takes.
[Sam] Come on. It's all right.
Okay?
[Lilly] I cannot believe my partner, how great he is.
He's the best partner that ever happened to me.
So I'm not going to tap
because I want to make it to day 21.
And I want to finish together with Sam.
[Sam] All right.
We got this. We got this together.
[chopping wood]
[Sam] I am so glad I could be there for Lilly
and to get her back in the game.
But given our levels of depletion already,
from now on, we need to start operating
a little bit more efficiently.
So I've got an idea for a project to help me collect firewood.
I'm making this carrying device,
which I think will help me with the firewood situation significantly.
So these will be the handles for the carrier.
And then string this the straw between the two.
And then these notches are where the...
The cordage will tie.
Working smart, not hard.
Oh, well, let... Let's see if it works first.
Otherwise, I've wasted half a day.
I need to do eight strands to make two meters of cordage.
So it'll be super strong so it can hold lots of weight in it.
[exhales] All right, so this is my uh,
my firewood carrier bag, I guess, or...
so I can lay... I could lay the firewood across it
and carry a huge bundle
much more so than I'd ever be able to carry as an individual in my arms.
I could stack wood as high as I like,
pick up both sides,
and hold tons and tons of firewood.
It's just a very simple mechanism.
But given our levels of depletion already,
it's gonna be most efficient and calorie-saving for me.
At least I've done something that a survivalist would make.
And it'll make me feel proud,
and, uh, like I'm achieving something out here
like a real survivalist.
[Lilly] Now that Sam has promised me to stay,
I realize that we're a team and it's better if we stay together.
And today, I'm trying to stay positive, think positive
and I'm in great hopes that we will get some food soon.
Our crayfish trap has not been as efficient as in the first days.
So, in a sense, going to walk to find some different kinds of spots.
I want to check out this pond.
It's one that I have never seen before.
Dude, there's a huge crayfish.
That's the biggest one, yet.
Let's see if I can get it like this.
I don't want to stick my hands underneath the rocks
because I don't know how hard they can pinch my fingers.
So, rather I use the stick method to be sure.
Damn it.
Come on!
Oh, my God.
Oh, here's one!
Right here.
Yeah! [chuckling] Look at it!
Big crayfish!
Whoo!
Got it with the hand.
Yeah!
And look at the claws, I mean, that's amazing!
Yeah.
Now I know how it works
and I just have to chase them out of the holes.
Whoa!
Got it.
Nice!
Okay, I think that's it for the pond.
I head back.
Let's eat.
And Sam's gonna love it.
[Lilly] Sam!
Hey, buddy.
[Sam] Hey, Lilly.
[Sam] I see that smile I love.
I got one.
Oh, wow!
- And a second one! - [both exclaiming excitedly]
Look at the size!
What!
[Sam] I am absolutely over the moon!
This is gonna be a great little protein hit.
Probably the equivalent of a boiled egg each.
[Sam] It's massive! Look at him, he's like a lobster.
[Lilly] Yeah.
It's good to see you smile.
- Cheers! - Cheers.
[Lilly] Mm.
[Sam] Ah!
Wonderful.
Oh, it's so good to have a little bit of meat in our tummies.
How good does that feel, Lilly?
- Rejuvenated, honestly. - Oh.
"Rejuvenated." "Rejuvenated" is the word.
It might as well be a three-course meal.
It feels amazing. I can actually sleep.
[grunts]
[Sam] Based on the things we've been through on this challenge,
there's been some talk of maybe not making it.
But I still think we're back on track for the high score.
And we're gonna go all the way.
[Sam sighs]
I feel so better now, so much better.
[Sam] Oh, God. You really, really are
an absolute champion.
[Sam] All the way, baby!
[Lilly] All the way.
[Sam] There's no quitting now.
- [Sam] Are you ready, Lilly? - [Lilly] Yeah.
It's sunny, yeah!
[Sam] I think we've caught what might be termed as a second wind.
So today and tomorrow,
and the next day all the way through,
we just wanna go for a big win.
[Sam] Lilly, we're back to going for the high score, then?
[Lilly] Yeah.
[Sam] Nice.
[Lilly] So we're two weeks in, and in the last seven days,
we need some more protein, otherwise we can't keep going.
[Sam] Good luck, Lilly.
[Lilly] Yeah.
Oh [bleep].
A squirrel.
Where?
[Lilly] Where is it?
- [Sam] Look. - Hang on.
[Sam] See it? See it? See it?
- [Sam] Tree with shaved bark, there you go. - [Lilly] Okay, I see him.
[Sam shushing] Slowly.
And remember, if anyone asks,
you're a nice, friendly herbivore.
[Sam] He's moving to the right.
He's moving to the right.
He's on the path. There he goes across the right.
Lilly, Lilly! Right, right!
Damn it.
I don't know where it went.
He's gone.
[Lilly] I will get him next time.
That looks aggressive enough to break someone's neck to me.
[Lilly] Yeah.
You set the trap now, okay?
Yesterday, a ground squirrel approached our camp.
So today, I'm going to set up a Vietnamese snap trap.
So I'm going to set this trap on a game trail
in between the trees here.
With a Vietnamese snap trap,
you can catch all kind of smaller critters
like squirrels or mink, rats, rabbits,
everything which is not much bigger than this.
Okay.
Trigger is almost done.
Now when you're setting this trap, you have to make sure
that you're not breaking your own fingers
because it's really powerful
and very tricky to set up.
This trap uses the tension of a long, flexible stick
weighted down in the middle by rocks.
And then elevated on both ends
with a trigger mechanism on the shorter end.
So the smaller stick is pressed to the upright stick
by this stick that is coming down,
so the pressure is going this way.
So if there's an animal coming through here,
it will touch the small stick here,
does this, and then it breaks its neck.
This is actually one of the most humane traps.
It's a quick and sudden death.
Next animal that comes through here is dead.
[Sam] Feels like a 1,000 miles now, doesn't it?
[Lilly] Yeah.
[Lilly] Do you have the knife with you?
[Sam] Yes.
[Sam] Is it triggered?
[Lilly] No.
Apparently, there was no animal coming through.
[Lilly] We get to the trap, it's not triggered.
That's unfortunate, but this is how it is when it comes to trapping.
If there's an animal coming, it should work.
But if there's no animal, then there's nothing you can do.
[Sam] That would've been a nice little morsel in our bellies.
The clock's ticking down.
The war clock is approaching zero.
What are you hunting tonight, Lilly?
[Lilly] I'll try to go for rabbits.
Ooh, she's hunting rascally rabbits.
Ooh!
[Sam] Fur, oh! Can you imagine that if we get a rabbit?
[Lilly] Mm.
- [Sam] Oh, wow! - [Lilly] Wish me luck.
You got this, I believe in you.
[Lilly] So unfortunately, we haven't eaten a lot lately.
And we need as much energy as possible
so that we have enough of power to make extraction.
It's really urgent that we get some type of protein.
So my plan tonight is to walk back to the prairie lands
that I walked into at the beginning of this challenge.
And I hope I can find some cottontail rabbits
or Czech rabbits or some smaller game.
'Cause around here, there's not a lot that I can hunt.
I hope that it works out because we desperately need some food.
[whispering] I think I see one.
Oh, my God.
It's huge.
[Sam] [bleep] Oh, sweetheart!
Last night, we stayed very close to the fire
and we've been peppered by hot coals.
[groaning in pain]
And one of the said coals has landed on my, um...
[groaning]
My little soldier's helmet.
- [Sam groaning] - [Lilly chuckling]
I'm gonna look like I've been hit with buckshot when I get home.
Thankfully, this brave heroic medic is about to, uh...
Make sure it's not gonna get infected.
[medic] It shouldn't be too traumatizing. [chuckles]
[Sam] Well, you used just a normal-sized Q-tip.
Obviously we need everything extra-large.
Just like my blur.
[medic] Let's do it. You ready?
- No, but go for it anyway. - [medic] All right.
- [medicine sprays] - [Sam yelps]
Oh!
Thank you, oh!
[inhales]
[exhales]
[Sam] That is just what the doctor ordered.
[Lilly] Yes!
Oh, my God!
[screams]
Whoo! Look at this!
Oh, my God!
Oh, my...
It's huge!
[Lilly] I took the shot and got the rabbit,
and it was the craziest feeling in my life, like...
New Mexico was kicking my ass,
but now we have something to eat and now we can make it.
That's a lot of meat. Sam's going to love it!
Thank you so much, buddy, for your life.
Let's go home.
We are eating tonight!
Yeah! Woo-hoo!
We got dinner!
[Sam] Oh, my goodness, Lilly.
- What a... Oh, my God! - [Lilly exclaims]
- I got a huge rabbit! - [Sam exclaims excitedly]
[Sam yelling] Oh, yes!
[Sam] Look at the size of it!
Yeah, it's like... It's a quarter of the size of you!
I didn't even know rabbits got that big!
Oh, my God!
This is gonna take us all the way to 21, Lilly.
[Lilly] Yeah.
- [Lilly] Oh, my God, look at that! - [Sam] Oh, my goodness.
[Sam] We've got a heart, liver, kidneys.
Let's check out the liver.
[Sam] It looks good to me.
- [both] Cheers! - [Sam] Ladies first.
- [Sam] What's the word? - Mm-hmm.
Yummy.
Oh!
- Oh, that is life. - Ah!
Oh, my God, I can feel the energy going into my body again.
- [Sam] Oh, thank you so much, Lilly. - Mm-hmm.
I'm so grateful, and you've been such a great mentor and teacher to me.
And I really do feel like I've transitioned
from being, like, a fan to actually feeling like I'm a proper survivalist.
[Lilly] Yeah, you are.
And I just don't think I could've done that without you.
[Lilly] I couldn't have done it without you.
You're my muscle. You built the shelter, most of it.
You dragged in the stones. You're great!
I love you, man. I could not have done it without you.
That really means a lot to me, Lilly.
And I wouldn't have wanted to be out here with anyone else.
You've made this whole experience just life-affirming for me,
just absolutely amazing from start to finish.
And it's an honor to know you, and I know that we're just gonna be
best friends for life. I really mean that.
Yeah.
I love you, brother.
[Sam crying] I love you, too.
[Sam] Yes, yes. Yes!
[Lilly] Can't wait to leave this place.
- [Sam] Yeah. - Our shelter was great, but now,
- I'm ready to go. - Me too.
- [Lilly] I have to. - [Sam] I've waited a decade for this.
[Lilly] Let's put out the fire.
[Sam] Farewell, Castle Grayskull.
[Lilly] Bye.
[Sam] Nice.
[Lilly] Let's go.
[Sam] Yes, ma'am.
[narrator] To reach their extraction point,
Sam and Lilly must climb their way up and out of this steep gorge,
only to descend three treacherous miles down the other side
through sharp rocks and snake-filled boulders of the canyon wash,
to an open meadow in time to meet their extraction vehicle.
[Sam] Keep a slow, steady pace
so we don't dehydrate ourselves.
[Lilly] Yeah.
[Sam] Just watch your footing.
[Lilly] Dude, watch out for rattlesnakes.
[Sam] Good advice.
[Sam] Let me get up on that one, then I'll help you.
Some good hand holds here on the right and left.
Then just step up like stairs.
Look at this.
- Oh, my goodness. - Can't believe it.
[Lilly] It's so beautiful.
[Sam] I've never seen anything like it.
[Sam] Lilly and I make our way up to the top of the cliffs,
trying to get observance of our extraction route.
Looking at over Rattlesnake Canyon,
my goodness, is the view awe-inspiring.
But we have an awfully long way to go,
and it's a really long way down.
[Lilly] There's the extraction.
[Sam] We're gonna have to come down the wash,
and then follow it around to the left.
[Lilly] Yeah.
It actually looks like
the signs of civilization down there.
That could mean rescue.
You ready to get out of here, Lilly?
[Lilly] Yeah.
[Sam] Watch out for those droppings.
I wouldn't touch 'em.
There's a lot of cactus here.
[sniffs] Ay, ay ay!
- Are you okay? - [Sam] Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Let's just mind our footing
'cause these rocks are definitely
where snakes will come out to sun themselves.
- [Lilly] This is some treacherous terrain. - [Sam] Oh, it is.
- [Sam] Let's just... - [Lilly] Oh, my gosh.
[Sam] We do need to start heading down
these boulders now into the wash.
[Lilly] Yeah.
[Sam] We've got to the boulders
in the wash of crawdad creek.
We could slip and dash our heads on a rock.
One of these boulders could move and crush us.
It's extremely dangerous.
It is [bleep] treacherous. You with me, Lilly?
[Lilly] I'm here.
[Sam] Heaven forbid one of our legs goes down
like a crevice or something.
[Lilly exhales]
- [Sam] Okay? - [Lilly] Yeah.
[Sam] This looks like it could be a path out of the wash.
[Lilly] Nice.
The sun's about to be beating on me.
And we both know that's my, uh, Kryptonite.
[exhales]
Lots of cacti here.
Let's watch our footing throughout.
We've been walking for some time now,
and we're both extremely dehydrated.
Lilly is really struggling.
[Lilly] Pretty soon I can't do it anymore.
- [exhales] - [Sam] Nearly there. Okay?
[Lilly] Yeah.
[Sam] But we're trying to lift each other up.
We rise and fall together as our team Silly rolls.
I think we're definitely approaching
the heat of the day now, that's for sure.
How you doing?
[Lilly] Okay.
[Sam] Good. Keep going.
We'll get there.
[Lilly exhales]
[Sam] I hear something.
- [Lilly] A wagon? - [Sam] Is it?
With horses?
- Oh, my God! - [laughs]
Oh, my God!
- [Lilly] Yeah! - [Sam] Yes! Yes!
- Yeah! - Yes, yes, yes!
- [Sam] Look at these animals. - [Lilly] Wow, that's such an American way
- to get out of here. - Oh!
- They're beautiful. Oh! - Oh, my gosh.
This is the most Wild West thing
I've ever experienced in my life.
- [Sam] Let's get out of here. - [Lilly] Woo-hoo!
Nice. Yeah!
- [Sam] We did it. We did it. We did it! - [Lilly] Yeah!
- [Sam] My jagar! - [Lilly] My Krieger.
Let's go home.
Twenty-one days!
[both cheering]
[Sam laughing]
[Lilly] I can't believe it, it's so surreal.
It was my biggest dream, and I've done it.
It's great.
Whoo!
- Look at the landscape. - [Lilly] Oh, my God.
It's like being in... It's like being in a Western.
The Wild West got its teeth into us immediately.
And, uh, to know me and my partner made it together,
is absolutely fantastic.
We've had ups and downs, but let me just say,
the worse it got, the closer we became.
And I have nothing but gratitude and thanks.
She is my sister for life.
We've been through a lot of [bleep].
[Sam] We have been through everything.
It's gonna take a long time to process this.
A long time.
[Lilly] I am pretty proud of this
because I'm the first Austrian who completed this challenge.
Of course, I had my lows when I was weak,
but we worked really well together as a team.
And, we got out of here together.
That's the best thing about it.
[narrator] After 21 days,
Lilly lost a total of 26 pounds,
and her final PSR increases from 7.1 to 7.9.
Beat me up, let me have a sleep.
- Put me back in coach. - [Lilly chuckles]
I'm ready to roll.
When I came into this challenge, I did doubt myself
as to whether I could complete this challenge.
But, to be honest, I feel really proud of myself.
I did my best to contribute to the team.
Right now, on day 21,
I'm walking out an extreme survivalist.
[narrator] Sam lost a total of 36 pounds,
and his PSR rises from 6.2 to 7.0.
Twenty-one days.
Team Silly.
What else you got?
- [chuckles] - [laughing]
-[Lilly] New Mexico! [cheering] -[Sam] Yes, 21 days!
Hey, guys. It's me, Lilly.
And I'm back from my Naked and Afraid challenge.
I can't wait to share with you
some, uh, new survival skills that I have learned.
- [laughing] - I would also like
to make a shoutout to my partner Sam.
I believe that you are a true survivalist.
Thank you for watching, guys.
And stay tuned till next time.
[howling]
[man] The minute that these jeans hit the floor,
it's redemption time.
[woman] There's never been a crew member
to attempt a challenge
until now.
[Sam] When my wife sees my partner,
- I can already feel the side eye. - [chuckling]
[man] Hello!
Greetings!
Surprise!
It's a sausage fest.
[woman] No dudes at this party.
[all laughing]
- Mind if I join you down here? - [all] Oh, no!
A guy's gonna crash our party?
[man] This place has already taken out
two other survivalists.
Gonna be absolute hell.
[woman] Oh, snake. Ow, ow!
[man] And we go... Ah!
Whoo! Run! Go, go, go, go!
Ow! Ow.
[man] I'm getting chewed up.
[woman] God!
[man] This is the Olympics of survival.
[screams]
- But this experience... - God!
- ...can become like a nightmare. - [screaming]
- [groans] - Hey, hey, hey, hey!
[roars]
[man] Hey!
- They're coming in. - [all screaming]
[screaming]
I'm sick and tired of pulling your weight.
Don't tap, die first.
Shoo-hoo!
[groaning]
Team work makes a dream work.
[woman] Ow!
[bleep] I got it.
[shouting] We have meat.
[all grunting]
[man] Yeah!
Come on!
Yes!
- Yeah! [laughing] - My partner's a badass.
- Oh, my God! - [trumpeting]
Yeah!
Are you ready?
[man] I'll show the Devil who's boss.
