Tara: [ Crying ] It hurts so bad.
Dustin: She's in a pretty bad way.
She's having another reaction to the insects.
I don't know if, like,
my skin's extra sensitive or what, but it just...
I just want to take it all off.
[ Crying ]
It just hurts.
Narrator: One man and one woman...
- Aah! - Aah!
Narrator: ...Alone for 21 days...
Aah!
Cut myself up pretty good here.
Narrator: ...To face the most primal survival challenge
of their lives.
Mmm. Rat kebabs.
They have no clothes, no food, no water.
Only their skills...
Ow. God, that [bleep] hurt.
Narrator: ...And their will to survive...
Whoo-hoo!
Woman: I'm so scared right now.
Narrator: Central America.
On a remote island off the west coast of Panama,
the production crew heads out on a final scout.
Insertion is two days away.
Without warning, they are attacked
by thousands of Africanized killer bees.
Woman: Oh, my God.
Africanized bees attack relentlessly in large numbers,
and the crew has suffered hundreds of stings.
You ready? Relax.
Now.
After such an aggressive attack,
they're at risk of kidney failure and asphyxiation.
The crew almost got killed, and they're dressed.
This happens to our naked survivalists, they're out.
Narrator: Two days later, the crew has made
enough of a recovery to continue with production,
and the survivalists have been informed of the threat.
They've both decided to face the challenge head-on.
For their safety,
they'll be escorted into the jungle by local guides.
Tara: I am a little nervous about surviving in a jungle.
The thing that scares me the most are the killer bees.
The crew was stung earlier, and it freaks me out.
My name's Tara, and I'm a mountain mama
from the high country of Colorado.
This is my house.
I have a workshop, chickens and a coop.
I love our lovely ladies.
I have a real passion for fire.
That's what we use to heat our house with.
Whoo-hoo!
But making a fire in the jungle
is a lot different from making a fire in dry Colorado.
Definitely be a challenge for me.
I worked in the wilderness therapy field in Florida.
I approach survival by being busy
and thinking ahead and planning.
I'm very goal-driven, and that's definitely one skill
I'm gonna use every day while I am out here.
Narrator: Tara displays a high degree of
she has a wealth of experience in rugged environments,
but she has never set foot in a jungle.
Tara earns an initial PSR, or primitive survival rating,
of 6.8.
I've never seen this much vegetation in one place.
It's a hot, crazy mess out here.
My name is Dustin.
I'm from Grand Island, Nebraska,
and I work in an ammunition factory.
I was a small-arms repairmen in the army.
I fixed guns.
I'm a gun nut. Rifle on the floor.
Pretty big rifle... 50 Cal.
I grew up in a really rural area.
My dad... if he didn't go out and find something to eat,
then the family was gonna go hungry that night.
So he passed some of that stuff down onto me.
I think that being able to fend for yourself is important.
I definitely do have the prepper mentality,
and I have a need right now
to put everything that I've learned to the test.
And I really hope I don't come up lacking.
I'm gonna make nature my bitch.
Narrator: Dustin's childhood spent living off the land
and his years of military training could serve him well,
but this prepper could be seriously challenged
without his stockpile of guns and food.
Dustin earns an initial PSR of 6.1.
[ Sighs ]
I'm comfortable with being naked,
but being completely naked
and knowing that there's killer bees in the area
really scares me.
Naked in a jungle. Here we go.
Things are about to get awful damn white around here.
Tara: I'm hoping that my partner has the skills of hunting,
because that's an area that I lack in,
and can remain focused in times when we need to be focused.
Tara: Hey, partner.
Hello, over there. How you doing?
We're naked and alone in a jungle,
so we must be together.
Yes, of course.
Well, I'll meet you down here in the middle,
and we'll take a look at what we got.
Dustin: I hope that my partner is not pigheaded
and can keep an open mind, because I'm very laissez-faire.
I don't really have a plan.
I'm Tara.
I'm Dusty or Dustin or Hobbs or whatever you like.
Nice to meet you, Hobbs. Let's see what we have here.
Narrator: Dustin's survival tool of choice is a metal pot.
Tara's is a bow-drill fire starter.
We got ourselves a little machete there, too.
Oh, and I have one more thing.
Looks like I have a map.
Okay, let's take a look at it.
Looks like we're right here. There's a rock.
Stay away from the bees,
but then we got this big tree-of-life-looking thing.
I say let's go there.
Yeah. Yeah, definitely.
Dustin and Tara will have to survive
in the dense jungles of Isla San Jos,
a primitive purgatory disguised as paradise.
The lush landscape is teeming with crocodiles,
10-foot-long boa constrictors, and giant cockroaches.
But it's the island's tiniest predators
that can pose the greatest threat.
Swarms of flying and crawling insects plague the island.
Among the worst, pin-sized sand flies
known as chitras that persistently bite
and can transmit a painful parasitic disease.
Most dangerous of all, the Africanized bees
that can sting to death
anything or anyone who threatens the hive.
Dustin: Coming from America, where you're always connected
to Wi-Fi and the Internet and got your cellphone
and your Facebook and everything,
and then getting plopped down in the middle of the jungle,
I think that the biggest foe out here
is gonna be, probably, boredom.
So, where are you from?
Oh, I'm from a little, small town in Nebraska.
What about you?
Well, I'm from a really tiny town in Colorado
up in the mountains.
Okay.
Oh.
Whatever.
Looks like this is a little game trail.
Ah, yeah.
Some kind of critter runs down here to get a drink.
So, do you hunt?
Yes.
Yay.
Might have to set up a snare or a deadfall.
Tara: Hobbs is a hunter,
and I've never really hunted before, so that's good.
Oh, my gosh. Look at that.
That is awesome.
Yeah, I think that's definitely our tree.
That's huge.
So what do you think about making a temporary shelter
for the first night on the ground?
[ Sighs ] Yeah.
What about right over here? I kind of like this spot.
Dustin: Yeah.
Dustin: We're right near the river, so we got our source of water
and got a lot of really soft foliage.
We're just building a hasty shelter.
If we're lucky,
we got maybe two, three hours of daylight left.
All of our building material is fighting us tooth and nail.
Everything is covered in these obnoxious thorns.
Getting kind of sick of having to do this.
Nature, she's a bitch.
I like to think of her as my friend.
[ Laughs ]
Well, she hasn't been very friendly
since we've been out here.
We're covered in bugs.
All our building supplies are fighting us.
At least she's providing us with something.
Well, you know,
it actually is not looking half bad right now.
Yeah. Looks pretty good.
Ouch.
It's these little bugs that are crawling on my skin.
Look at them.
They're all, like, moving on my skin, right?
And when I touch them, they stop,
and they burrow into my skin.
- You see them? - Uh-huh.
- It's a breeding ground. - A chigger.
I felt like I had little, like,
tingly spiders underneath my skin.
They're having a party.
I certainly hope we don't break out
in some kind of weird hives.
Oh, I'm sure that we're gonna get bug-bit all to hell.
All right.
All right, little satchel.
You're gonna be my best friend tonight.
Do you just feel like little worms
are crawling all over your body in every direction?
Mm-hmm.
Yeah.
Oh, my God.
That thing is enormous.
[Bleep] Cockroaches. Humongous
aah!
Oh, let's get out of here.
[Bleep]
We are sitting on top of a rock in the middle of the stream.
[ Laughs ]
Watching the bats fly around
because no giant cockroaches are going to cross the stream
to get to us on this rock.
And hopefully, sunrise is only a couple of hours away.
Can you look and see if I have a tick in my butt crack?
I think I might.
It might be a bug bite, though.
I'm just... I just don't want a tick in my butt crack.
Okay.
Is it a bite?
Yeah, it's a bite.
Okay. All right, good.
We got ate alive by every manner of insect.
I think we fed every bug in Panama.
I've got chiggers in places
that I would rather not have chiggers.
And an ant bit me there.
So I'm gonna try and get some type of bedding situation
where we're off the ground.
I don't want another repeat
of the night of the living cockroaches.
We basically take one vine,
and we're gonna wrap it up to get it started with,
and then once we get it splayed out into a little tripod,
then we can get more and more and more
and just really, really bind these things down.
I didn't sleep at all last night.
We were on the ground,
and we didn't build a raised platform to sleep on.
And that was that a chance we took.
But I need sleep in order to survive.
Splay it out like that.
When we put weight on it,
we don't want those vines to snap...
Right.
...and spill us into the dirt and the cockroaches.
All right, give it a shot.
[ Chuckles ]
All right.
I'll let you get on there first.
Oh!
Son of a bitch.
It's okay.
We might not have a bed tonight.
I say we try it one more time.
I think we just have to re-wrap them
and tighten them up a little bit.
Dustin: I had some grandiose visions
of what I thought I would be able to accomplish out here,
but I knew that, you know,
I was mostly just fooling myself.
[ Grunts ]
Is it about as comfortable as it looks?
It actually isn't too bad.
This just feels really good to be able to lay down.
How are you feeling?
I don't think I have anything else
that I want to do today except just take it easy.
We're gonna try and get a fire today so we can boil some water.
If we do get a fire started,
it's gonna be like a 24-hour job keeping it going.
Going around finding fuel, cutting down wood
is really gonna be a bit of a hassle.
Okay.
I think I'm gonna crawl in here real quick.
Working on fire for as long as we can
I think is really important
so we can boil water and stay hydrated.
And my partner is taking a nap in the shelter.
How are you doing, Hobbs?
Ohh.
Not getting very comfortable.
How are you doing?
Help me with this?
Two people with the bow?
Yeah.
Okay.
Take longer strokes. There we go.
No.
We're packed.
Yeah. [ Laughs ]
Take a little breather? I'm pooped.
Are you? Okay.
We could probably both use some hydration.
Yeah.
We don't have fire yet, so we can't boil any water.
I'm still not that comfortable drinking out of a stream,
but I don't want to be dehydrated, either.
Dustin: It is a risk,
but I came out of the gate swinging today
and probably hit it a little harder than I should have
on low food and water.
It's hard for me to do this
'cause it goes against everything I've ever done.
Wilderness safety.
I'm doing something different now, so...
Dustin: Yep.
Tara: If we're unable to get fire today,
I really hope that we can get it tomorrow
because drinking from the stream
is something that I've never done before.
I've always been taught
you always filter, boil, purify your water.
Ahh.
I'm really worried.
Tasty... ish.
Ooh, it's a roach!
Where?
I got it.
Oh, look at him. That thing is enormous.
Ew.
I'm sorry.
[ Laughing ] It's okay.
Feel like taking a nature walk?
Yeah.
We definitely need to go scouting around for some food.
We really need to find food because I've only had
about four hours of sleep over the past three nights,
and both Hobbs and I are feeling really depleted.
Ow! Ow!
God, I hate these things so much.
Oh. Lookit over here. Do you see the nut fruits?
Yeah.
They don't look like they're quite ripe yet,
but maybe there's a bunch that is.
They need to be kind of a purple-ish color.
Oh, there's some on the ground.
These are ripe, aren't they?
Yeah, that's perfect.
Before you hack anything,
make sure you look up for beehives.
Yeah.
Ta-da! Whoo-hoo!
High five. We got some food.
Dustin: They're the nuts that grow on the spiky black palms.
You don't get much out of it, but it is an edible fruit.
I might go in the opposite direction
and look for animal signs.
Okay.
This is near the area
where the bees are supposed to hang out.
So I'm gonna leave anything
that looks like it might be a beehive very much alone.
I'm gonna wait to eat until Hobbs gets back
so we can have our first meal together.
Dustin: I'm not really an adept tracker.
My hunting is typically done with a rifle or a shotgun.
So we'll see if lady luck
decides that she's gonna dump something in my lap.
Oh, forget it. Too big of a pain.
I haven't seen a single animal.
There's water, fruit nuts.
Oh, look at you, little Susie homemaker.
Whole a lot of work for a little bit of gain.
I'm excited that we found something to eat.
Yeah.
Tara's got a very positive and upbeat attitude.
So hopefully she keeps it up 'cause I know that my attitude
can get a little pessimistic at times.
Ouch.
Can you check my back for ticks really quick?
Um...
Pretty big cluster of chiggers on your arm there.
You are covered in bug bites.
They're turning puss-y now.
You might be having an allergic reaction to something out here
because I don't have them.
It's like my skin is on fire.
[ Insects buzzing ]
Tara: I literally just want to rip off my skin.
Dustin: Tara's covered in bug bites.
She might be having an allergic reaction to something out here.
Okay.
We'll have to check your hair tomorrow morning.
All right, let's try this fire thing again.
Tara: My bug bites are multiplying by the hour.
Oh! Sorry.
Fire's definitely a need.
Hopefully, that'll deter some of the bugs.
Dustin: We decided we were gonna give the tea handles a shot
because it didn't feel all that efficient
to have one person twiddling their thumbs
while the other person saws away on the bow drill
like a methed-out cello player.
Ooh! It's okay.
No! [Bleep] There's an ember in there.
Push it around there. Push it together.
Have you done that before?
Put it up and make sure you don't close the back.
You keep the back open
so the oxygen can go through the dust.
[ Exhales ] There you go.
A little bit harder than that.
If you want to hand it off, let me know.
There's some big embers in there.
Now I'm getting lightheaded.
[ Laughs ] I'm feeling amazing!
Very happy.
We got fire.
Hopefully Hobbs will catch us an animal so we can eat it.
Whoo-hoo!
It's really, really important to me to make sure
that we don't let that fire go out.
[ Laughs ] Side hug.
I think I'm just gonna go and scout for food.
Okay.
Dustin: I'm gonna explore some areas I haven't been to before
and see if I can find any trace of animals out here.
I'll be looking for a new place to set the snare up.
I'll probably just drop it someplace random.
Without shoes, this has the potential to hurt.
Yeah, just lost the machete.
I may have to endeavor to be a little more careful.
Maybe.
To me, it looks like this little low area here
is a very convenient little trail
for animals to come down and get a drink of water.
Some little animals are gonna come down through here,
walk through this snare, and hoist it into the air
and be my dinner.
Okay. We're all set.
I hope that works.
There is a killer bee nest
that's not too far away from our campsite.
And this is pretty serious stuff.
Right before the sun went down,
Hobbs noticed a bee or two swarming.
We're really concerned about our safety right now and tonight,
and I'm not sure if we're gonna get much sleep.
But hopefully this fire will keep them away.
We have a good supply of dried leaves to put on the fire,
so if they act up, we can hopefully smoke them out.
Dustin: Hey, Tara?
Tara: Yeah?
I might stay out there at the trap for a little bit
just to get away.
Okay. Yeah, yeah.
Dustin: I came to check my snare trap,
it's got this concave divot in it
that's just perfect for my butt.
Tara... she's always got to be doing something,
and I do feel guilty that I'm sometimes just laying around.
But this is a marathon. It's not a sprint.
Tara: It's in my mind to look for food every day,
and it seems like there's a lot of shrimp out here,
at least during the day.
So I am gonna try and make a shrimp basket.
So hopefully that will bring in something to eat.
Hobbs.
Hobbs.
Mm-hmm?
Have you ever done... I don't know what it's called...
a hole trap where you dig a hole and you camouflage the hole
and the animal falls in?
I've never done one before.
I just don't really know about digging out here.
It's a lot of work to dig.
I feel like I've lost a lot of confidence in Hobbs.
He just really hasn't applied himself.
He'll sleep for most of the day.
It's his way of surviving, I guess.
Are you all refreshed?
I'm a little discouraged.
I think between two of us, we'll have a shrimp tonight.
It's a little disheartening because, as someone who hunts,
I've been coming up lacking in pretty much every attempt.
I'll switch off with you. How about that?
- Sounds good. - Okay.
Keep the fire going.
Yeah.
I'm gonna try and catch a shrimp.
Tara: I was raised to be proactive.
And to me, when you're in a situation like this,
there's always something that can be done.
I really feel that I'm trying to work through
a couple things that have gotten me down with Hobbs.
Oh, my gosh. Hobbs!
You let the fire go out!
[ Sighs ]
[ Crying ] My partner doesn't know anything.
All he does is sleep all freaking day.
He's so incredibly lazy.
He's, of course, sleeping again, like always, and our fire's out.
I just feel like he's such a dud, a complete dud.
And this is the worst possible partner I could ever have.
[ Snoring ]
Can we have a conversation?
I really need to talk about some things.
I guess, like, things are just kind of,
like, building up, and it's starting to get to me.
I feel like I'm doing a lot more than you are.
Taking care of a fire does take a lot of work,
and I'm one of those people that has a lot of energy.
I don't know where it comes from.
You know, you might be
on the other end of the spectrum.
But I'd really like to maybe come to, like,
a more middle ground
'cause I think we really need each other out here, Hobbs.
Dustin: I know.
I've been really selfish the past couple of days.
I've been married for so long, and it's, like...
[Voice breaking] I can count on my husband for anything.
We really don't even have to talk about it,
so, like, this is new to me.
Sorry to have to put you through that.
This is a team effort 24/7.
I do realize that the past couple of days
I've just been exhausted,
and rather than fighting through it,
I've just been crashing out whenever I needed to.
And this right here is the big kick in the ass.
Yeah.
I'm very good at spacing out
and ignoring what other people would consider to be obvious.
I lived with a girl once and she would come home
and I'd be watching TV and she'd bitch at me about,
"why aren't the floors swept and vacuumed?"
And I'll be like, "what are you talking about?"
Things that bother other people don't bother me.
All right.
And we talked it out.
I think we're gonna be done with that, thank God.
Let's get to work.
Tara: Depending on somebody else is hard for me
because I'm more of an independent type of a person.
I hope communicating better will make things more fluid,
and hopefully Hobbs will be putting in some more effort.
Protein will help strengthen our immune systems
so we can heal from the chitra bites.
So whether it's palm nuts or shrimp,
it's important to try and find food every day.
I think I have one!
Hobbs!
Yeah.
We have a shrimp!
Whoo!
Ooh! It's a big one!
Yay! We each get a bite of shrimp tonight.
Dustin: It's a good omen.
At least one of us is gonna be able to pull
something out of this river.
We've got to get more of these guys.
Yes.
I am stoked.
Tara: I knew, if I stuck to it, I would catch something.
Really good to know that we can catch shrimp now
and we've got a technique that will work.
Okay, so, what did you say? We split it in half?
Oh, my gosh. This is so good.
How about the eyeballs?
No.
It's like mush.
Now I'm stuffed.
[ Both laugh ]
[ Insects buzzing ]
[ Tara crying ]
The chitras are out in full force again.
They've really come out swinging.
And my partner is over here having another...
another... terrible reaction
to these little biting [bleep]heads.
Just having an absolutely miserable time.
You okay?
[ Crying ] I don't know if, like,
my skin's extra sensitive or what, but it just...
I just want to take it all off.
It hurts so bad.
[ Crying ]
She's in a pretty bad way.
She's having another reaction to the insects.
It's happened two or three times since we've been out here.
Hobbs, could you please help me put some ash on my back?
Yeah.
Thank you.
Narrator: Mud made from ash can help cool the skin,
temporarily relieving discomfort caused by bites and stings.
- There you go. - Thank you.
Dustin: The medical problems that she has been having,
it is a big hindrance to being successful out here.
So now I just got to get up off my ass
and actually go about doing something.
I'm going out on a little walk.
I'm gonna see if I can't find any trace of animals out here.
Up there...
Got a big termite nest.
You can eat 'em.
It ain't much,
but it will be better than nothing.
That's a termite nest.
Okay.
Oh, it looks like this tree is...
Just gonna fall.
Soon, we'll have jungle oatmeal.
Narrator: Termites are rich in protein and fat.
They provide almost twice as many calories
as the equivalent amount of beef.
Should we see how many fell in?
Yeah.
Is that larva?
Larvas and all sorts of good stuff in there.
Well, what do you think?
I say let's go boil this.
All right.
Maybe my bug bites will start to heal after this.
[ Chuckles ]
Dustin: Take a big chug.
A little woody.
Yeah?
Mm-hmm. A little crunchy.
Tara: Can't say it's, like, my favorite thing to eat,
but at least it will nourish our bodies.
Down the hatch.
Dustin: Tastes like pine sawdust.
I wouldn't trade my morning grits for it,
but if it's down between that and nothing,
got to do what you got to do.
It's packed with nutrients, protein.
Those are two of the things that we need right now.
It will get us through the day,
but it's definitely not gonna be one of those things
that I'm gonna be like, "oh, God, I could really go
for some termite right now," you know?
My body's finally starting to heal
from thousands of bug bites.
Oh, my gosh.
I feel like I've lost so much weight,
and my stomach started growling really consistently
a few days ago.
Well, nothing in the trap today, either.
A little disappointed, but it is what it is.
Yeah.
I can clearly see that she's skin and bones right now,
and if she needs some food
and if it's something that I can do,
I'm gonna do it
because we still have the walk ahead of us,
which is gonna be a challenge.
Yeah, we didn't catch any shrimp today.
I didn't even see any today.
Hey, I think I see something moving in the grass over there.
Oh, my God.
A big one.
[Bleep]
Aah! [Bleep]
Narrator: 18 days ago, Tara and Dustin made the journey
into the impenetrable Panamanian jungle of Isla San Jos
with PSR ratings of 6.1 and 6.8.
Tara has shown great mental stamina and endurance
coping with an alarming reaction to the chitras
and persisting with fire and food,
while her partner let his failures get the best of him.
[ Sighs ]
Narrator: But Dustin's discovery of a termite nest
has given him renewed confidence.
Dustin: Yeah, jungle oatmeal.
Confronted with a large snake that has entered their camp,
both Tara and Dustin are now in a situation
where their PSRS can be significantly affected.
Hey, I think I see something moving in the grass over there.
It's a snake.
Looks like a boa.
It's a boa.
He's moving slow,
so I'm just gonna chop his head off.
[ Grunts ]
You are my hero.
[ Laughs ]
[ Laughing ] Thank you.
Oh, my gosh.
Tara: Hobbs stepped up to the plate.
This meat is gonna give us
the energy we need for extraction.
That's pretty cool to see that improvement with him.
Who's the king of the jungle?
That is crazy.
No shrimps tonight. We've got snake to eat.
Yeah!
Let's get a fire going.
Yep.
Dustin: Haven't had a whole lot of success
with much of anything food-wise.
This puts a smile on my face in ways that you can't imagine.
You got it.
Ahh!
Ooh, that's an interesting noise.
[ Laughs ]
One more big tug. And there it is.
Aah!
[ Laughs ]
[ Laughs ] Congratulations.
Are you ready?
I think so.
Very, very tough and rubbery.
But not too bad.
I'm feeling pretty good about Hobbs' participation.
I think we worked together really well
and probably the best that we have
during out entire stay here.
Do you think we're gonna be able to eat it all?
I'm damn sure gonna try.
[ Laughs ]
Day 21... extraction day.
Think we should take one last look at the map?
Let's see.
So, we're right about here.
Ow! Just got stung by a bee.
[Bleep]
Whew! That burns.
[ Grunts ]
Dustin: We have a beehive up in this big tree
only about 100, 150 feet away from our campsite.
When one stings, it releases pheromones into the air,
which triggers the rest of them off to zero in.
They sting until the target is dead.
Tara: How are you feeling?
It burned for awhile.
I killed it. I pulled the stinger out.
No swarm is coming.
We'll keep our eyes peeled for more bees
on the way to our extraction point.
Narrator: To reach the extraction,
to trek through the thorny jungle
and follow the river for six miles,
staying clear of killer bees
and saltwater crocodiles that swim upstream.
Three miles in, they will have to wade
through deep mangrove mud,
make their way to the east bank of the river,
and continue their trek to the beach.
Once on the beach, they will have to swim to safety.
Let's start steppin'.
I'll blaze the trail. Just follow behind me.
Ow.
Baby black palms right here, so watch where you step.
Ow!
Ow! [Bleep]
Every tree I want to reach out for is a black palm.
Let's get back to the river.
Okay.
Uh, how deep is that?
Doesn't look too bad.
Whoa [bleep]
Ooh!
Oh!
You okay?
[ Grunts ] There we go.
You will sink to your hips, so watch yourself.
Oh [bleep] I'm sinking.
Whoa.
You need a hand, let me know.
All right.
The thing that worries me a little bit are the crocodiles.
I don't like it when I can't see the bottom.
Good?
Yep.
Let's Charlie Mike.
Tara: We are tired and weak.
We have black palm needles sticking in our feet.
But as long as I can make it, that's all that matters.
That sounds like the ocean to me.
Whoo!
Oh, that sounds amazing.
There's the ocean!
We made it!
It's so warm!
I don't need this stick anymore.
Come on! Keep up!
Come on.
Just got this one steep part left.
[ Sighs ]
Tara: Whoo!
Oh, let's get there.
- There's a boat! - Come here!
When I see the boat, I'm feeling empowered.
I feel like I can do absolutely anything now.
Dustin: Surviving out here for three weeks
is definitely going to make me appreciate
the luxuries we have back in civilization.
It gives me a different perspective
on how strong I can be.
Maybe I'm not physically strong,
but mentally I'm coming out a stronger person.
[ Laughs ]
Dustin: I came into this thinking
that I was going to be king of the forest,
stabbing and killing
and murdering animals left and right.
It was a very humbling experience to not get that.
I really feel like I was true to myself
and I stayed real to me
and I didn't change who I was during the challenge.
Narrator: Over the course of 21 days,
Dustin lost a total of 25 pounds.
Dustin started off overconfident in his abilities,
but he failed to support his teammate.
He allowed his failures to get the better of him
and lost his motivation,
leaving his partner to fend for herself.
He eventually did provide food for the team,
ultimately maintaining his initial PSR of 6.1.
After struggling to procure food for the last three weeks,
Tara lost a total of 16 pounds.
She did more than her fair share of team duties
and showed incredible mental fortitude
in coping with a terrible reaction
to the relentless sand flies.
Despite her frustrations,
she was able to communicate diplomatically
with her unmotivated partner and persevered through 21 days.
Her PSR increases from a 6.8 to a 7.6
by coping with the bugs, the bees, and each other,
Tara and Dustin discovered what they were made of
and survived their 21 days Naked and Afraid.
Dustin: May have to endeavor to be a little more careful.
I'm at a hot springs near my house.
I'm trying to soothe my chitra bites.
They are still super-super-itchy,
but this hot springs feels absolutely wonderful,
and it's just what I need.
It's time for a victory shave.
Now we'll lather up here real quick.
[ Water running ]
Oh, man.
All I got to do is get rid of the old white-trash mustache.
Freshly shaven.
