Narrator: Season after season,
dozens of america's most talented survivalists...
That's dinner.
...Have put their skills to the test...
Whoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo!
...Naked and afraid.
[bleep]
damn it!
Yeah, baby! Yeah! Oww!
Narrator: Across the country, fans of the show responded,
looking for their own chance to prove they have what it takes.
I'm ready to be naked and afraid.
Narrator: Nine finalists were selected.
Please vote for me. I'm such a fan of the show.
But not so afraid.
I'm already halfway of being naked.
[ blows ] you can see I can make fire.
I'll see you on tv.
I just would love the opportunity to do it.
Let's do this. I'm here to rock this out.
Narrator: And now, america's votes are in.
Aah!
I'm gonna be on "naked and afraid."
I'm gonna be on "naked and afraid."
gonna be on "naked and afraid."
whoo!
Narrator: One man, one woman
with no primitive survival experience...
[bleep] no!
Narrator: ...Have been given the chance
to take on the everest of survival challenges.
No, no, no, no.
In a special, 14-day episode,
they will have to fend for themselves
in one of the world's harshest environments...
I wish I had shoes!
...With no food, no water, and no clothes.
[ howls ] can either of them survive...

there is something big running around out there right now.
What am I getting myself into?!
I'm kristin young.
I'm from mount gilead, ohio, and I'm an oncology nurse.
I've been a fan of "naked and afraid" for forever.
My kids and I actually watch it together.
"oh, I'm so tired and sick." it's been two days.
This girl has been here a day,
and she's complaining about being sick
and her stomach hurting and being dehydrated.
Even though I'm just a fan, I think I can make it
because I'm used to going on very little sleep
with small children, and I love nature.
You don't like snakes.
You're right. Mommy doesn't like snakes.
Do you think mommy is gonna be able to light a fire?
Uh-huh!
I have a fear of being naked
and things coming towards my private areas
that are not supposed to be there.
My name's paolo di girolamo.
I'm from stoughton, massachusetts,
and I'm definitely a fan.
But everything in this show
are things that I like to do on my own when I go out hiking,
backpacking, camping -- anything like that.
So, this show right here is basically the bare-bones,
stripped-down version of what I'm actually capable of doing.
All right.
This is just something I know that I can do.
Narrator: One month before leaving for nicaragua,
kristin and paolo are given
primitive-survival-training lessons from an expert.
So, the bird hops around,
and then you capture a live bird.
Keep that going.
Increase your pressure slightly, little by little.
Not all of a sudden, just little by little.
They are taught the basics of fire-making,
shelter construction, and trap-building.
Definitely the next few weeks, I'm gonna need the practice,
and I am gonna practice.
But I just want to go out there and do it now.
Paolo: Coming into this, I was a little trepidatious.
You know, kind of nervous.
But right now, my confidence level is through the roof.
I can't believe it.
I just opened up the camera,
and like they said in the episode, it smells like fire.
[ sniffs ] it's a strong fire, too.
So, hopefully I'm gonna add a little bit more smoke to this
once I'm done with it.
My heart is racing
because I just had a nightmare about going to nicaragua.
Eating a little more extra food,
trying to put on some more pounds.
Don't worry. I'll still look good for the camera. I promise.
I am in my basement, testing out my orange, little fire starter.
Right now, I'm energetic.
I'm excited even though it's 2:30 in the morning,
and I'm flying to the airport.
I'm ready to go to nicaragua!
Narrator: Deep in the somoto canyon region of nicaragua,
the thick rainforest is littered with poisonous plants and trees
that provide cover for 15 different types of pit vipers
and one of the most lethal species
of coral snake in the world,
making it a daunting challenge for even highly trained experts.
Paolo: I cannot believe that I am sitting on a pile of pi
in the back of a pickup truck in nicaragua right now.
This is insane.
[ laughs ] now I'm the intro to the show.
I'm proud because I'm here.
You know, like, there were other guys that I beat out.
This is huge. It really is.
This is gonna be a very validating experience for me,
to show that, yeah, I belong out here.
I'm a real survivalist.
Narrator: Despite a significant amount of outdoor adventure exp
paolo is completely untested
in extreme conditions for long durations.
He's been given
an initial primitive survival rating of 4.2.
I don't want this to be a fluff piece.
That's not what I'm about.
Kristin: I still can't believe this is happening.
Mentally -- 100%, I am prepared.
I'm definitely gonna have the strength of positivity.
But experience-wise, we're gonna go for...40%.
[ cows moo ]
oh, my god.
Okay, maybe 50%.
40% to 50% prepared, experience-wise.
Narrator: Kristin's nursing background
and fitness as a marathon runner is a plus,
but her overall lack of primitive survival experience
sets her psr in the novice range at 3.6.
Kristin: I have no clue who I'm gonna meet up with.
Actually, I'm really anxious to meet them,
and I really hope we get along.
All right.
Well, at least I can't get arrested for being naked.
Have to go with that.
Here goes nothing.
[ chuckles ] whew!
Kristin: So, I'm not very comfortable
because I don't really want anyone seeing my booty.
[ chuckles ] sorry, mom and dad.
[ laughs ]
hello.
Not awkward at all. No, not at all.
Hi. I'm kristin. How you doing? Paolo.
Kristin, it's nice to meet you. Nice to meet you, paolo.
So, uh... This is different.
Yeah. I know you from your video.
Yeah, so, the video was a really interesting way
to go about to almost meet everybody
that I could potentially be with.
Mm-hmm, and nerve-wracking, 'cause then you had to
think about who you're gonna end up with.
[ chuckles ] exactly.
[ exhales sharply ] um...
So, do you want to see what we got and go from there?
Yeah. All right, great.
Narrator: In addition to a basic machete,
each were allowed one personal survival item.
Kristin chose a fire starter.
What did you bring? I brought fishing line.
Fishing line. Yeah.
Interesting.
It's braided, 30-pound test.
So, I mean, it should be really, really strong.
And it means we won't have to spend a lot of time
making too much cordage.
If we decided to, you know, move to somewhere else
or need to reuse this,
it's not gonna snap like vines and stuff might.
Okay. I've fished before.
Yeah, that's about all I've I used it for,
though, is fishing, so... Okay.
It'll be good to try it with something else, you know?
Perfect. Be a little creative.
So, do you have a map? Do I have a map?
Uh...I do. Perfect.
We're here.
There's a big tree. Mm-hmm.
And it looks like we have a path up above it
that's gonna lead us out to water.
So, yeah, what do you say we roll in that direction?
Yeah, let's head towards the water.
All right, cool.
So, what made you want to apply to this?
It's my favorite show. Yeah?
What kind of stuff have you done to, like, get ready?
Well, I'm from ohio, and it's snowing.
Yep.
So I wasn't really able to do much outside.
Kristin seems to have, you know,
like, energy and everything like that.
But I don't know what her skill sets are,
I don't know where her mind-set is,
and that's a big concern.
You want to take the lead?
Sure. Cool.
So, I think these might be the poisonous plants.
Oh, great. So we just walked into the valley of death?
Yeah. [ chuckles ] no touching.
Wonderful.
It's just basically a small forest of poisonous trees
that bees are flying around into.
[ laughs ] this goes up really high.
Yeah.
I wish I had shoes!
Oh [bleep]
I wasn't expecting to be put in a place
that is quite this, you know, unfriendly.
Ah. Ooh.
Stepped on something.
It's a little prickly with some of these plants down here.
Not dead yet.
It's pretty steep, so let's just be careful.
Really steep.
Kristin: The insertion hike --
way tougher than I thought it was gonna be.
You don't see that much on tv of how much they've been walking.
There's a lot more to it.
All right.
Oh! Think I see a waterfall.
It's beautiful.
It's gorgeous here.
It's really breezy.
Paolo: Well, here's proof of the crabs.
[ gasps ] we found a crab.
It's dead.
Oh, a dead crab.
At least we know they're here.
Wonder how long it's been dead.
Too long.
Ew, it's kind of gooey looking.
Yeah. Oh, it feel apart.
This is a lot of hills to be going up and down.
I know. Um...
Do we want to look around over there?
Yes. There's a big tree.
I figure, if we could find one with the roots,
we could use, like, half that as part of our shelter.
I love that idea.
That's not bad.
You could tuck in there, I could tuck in there.
You want to call this home for tonight, at least?
Yeah.
Narrator: The waterfall can be a steady source of water and food.
But by setting up camp too close to it,
kristin and paolo increase the risk
of encountering predators on their way to drink and hunt.
Kristin: Well, right now, I still feel like
I'm just naked in the middle of nowhere with nowhere to go.
So, once the shelter's built
and we have some kind of something to go to,
[ chuckles ] I think I'll feel a lot better.
Do you want me to get the, um...Bayonet?
Yes...
Paolo: I did hear her call it a bayonet,
and I think that I let it slide
only because it's one of those things where
if I call her out and be like, "no, no, no, it's a machete,"
she's gonna be like, "all right, you're a [bleep]"
so, how are we gonna get the wood to stay
from falling down straight on us tonight?
What do you think?
Probably the safest way is gonna be to make a shelf
with that fishing line.
So, if we just wrap it around, 'cause of the way that tree
fans out so much, it'll leave almost a little shelf.
I have noticed a few certain things.
Paolo kind of likes to play the expert.
Maybe it'll start getting on my nerves in another couple days,
and if it does, I'll let him know.
Okay, your fishing line idea better work.
Hey, hey.
Never really used fishing line like this before.
Where's the knife? We'll make a notch in the tree.
Right there. That good?
Probably do one on every side.
Yeah.
Cool.
Sun's kind of starting to go down.
Just taking a little longer... Than I expected.
Paolo: Those banana-looking fronds, they're very soft,
and they're bowing much more than we expected them to.
Think we should get some more wood.
I agree.
I'm really not happy with the shelter right now.
It's basically a pile of sticks, and I'm not happy with that.
Kristin: I think it just gets weird
when you're like, "okay, time for bed.
Let's go in our little hut together.
Oh, wait, nice to meet you.
Goodnight?"
what do you figure? Just chill out?
Yeah, I think it's chill-out time.
So, we're in our shelter here, and it's just getting dark.
And I think we had a pretty good first day.
Paolo made a pillow.
Look, there's paolo's pillow.
[ both chuckle ]
and we're just gonna try to go to sleep.
Good night.
[ leaves rustling ]
[bleep]
so, we just had our first experience
with an unknown animal in the rainforest.
Whatever it was, it sounded, you know, like a fair size.
Definitely had four feet, 'cause it was like...
[ whimpers ]
worst-case scenario, just keep the machete by our side.
And with any luck, it will wind up --
[ leaves rustling ] he's still out there.
There is something big running around out there right now.
[ birds chirping ]
so, right now, I'm making a spear.
Last night, we had a couple animals walk around our camp.
And honestly, I don't know what they were.
I would just like to have, for peace of mind,
in the event that we need to defend ourselves.
So, I'm trying to leave some bark on this side right here
so that it doesn't, you know, snap off or anything...
Like that. Yeah.
[ chuckles ] kristin: I was, like, on alert.
I was like, "did you hear that?! Did you hear that?!"
we need fire. Yeah, let's do that
'cause I'm not really in the mood to have an animal
come and sniff around on us.
Yeah, also we can go get water.
Paolo: So, what we're gonna do
is we're gonna turn this little area into a fire pit.
Getting good smoke already. That's good.
Paolo: Wait, wait, wait, pause.
So, I've seen that break on other episodes
'cause people are pushing down like that.
Oh.
So, see how it clicked back into place?
So, make sure that we're pushing, like, straight down.
Kristin: Oh, yeah.
Yep, yep.
Come on, come on.
No. No.
No!
[bleep]
yeah.
No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
Damn.
Paolo seems really frustrated.
I think it's, like, a guy thing.
[ chuckles ] "me have to build fire."
[ coughs ]
[bleep]
nothing about this whatsoever is easy right now.
[ grunts ]
all I'm doing is burning my thumb.
I can't believe that fire didn't go.
I can. Yeah?
It's not supposed to be easy.
At this point, I'm scary thirsty.
Like, my body feels, like, sick dehydrated.
Let's see if the waterfall is clean.
Oh, god, it feels good.
Oh, so good.
Kristin: Does it look clear?
It's clear, it's cool.
I think I'm gonna try some that's cascading off.
Kristin: He's pretty risky.
He's like, "I'm gonna try that right now."
I'm like, "okay."
I feel like I'm a lot more hesitant.
I think it comes from watching other shows.
It tastes wonderful.
There's no funny flavors to it or anything like that.
So, I tell you what --
I think I'll stick with what I just tried,
and if by, you know, the end of the day or tomorrow
I don't feel great, then it's my own fault.
Think it's better to be safe than sorry.
I guess we'll just see what happens.
If he doesn't feel sick this evening,
I might be drinking some ice-cold waterfall water.
I found a frog. You did?
Yeah. Where?
He's right here.
They have toxins on their skin, you know.
[ gasps ] no, you little [bleep]
what if it's poisonous?
It's not brightly colored.
Looks just like a regular little peeper.
Like we could cook it? Yeah.
Paolo: This is huge 'cause even though it's a small frog,
it's gonna be something for kristin and I
to actually put --
no!
[bleep]
[ groans ]
I have no idea where that damn frog went.
You can't really see.
Is he in there?
No.
Okay.
I'm pretty upset about the loss of the frog.
It's one less opportunity for us to eat.
[bleep] it.
Sorry I'm moving in slow motion.
No, that's the way we should move.
This is like, I feel dizzy and sick.
Oh, you think it might just be hunger right now?
Oh, I bet it's just that I haven't drank any water.
Okay.
We have to get water tomorrow.
I'm so thirsty.
Almost want to just go and drink from the waterfall.
Paolo: I drank probably a cup or so of water,
and I have experienced zero negative side-effects right now.
All right, I'm gonna keep a close eye.
You sure you're all right?
Perfectly fine.
Okay.
I think water has to happen.
I just peed, and it was, like, neon orange.
Kristin: I've got to drink something.
Paolo's not sick yet.
Kristin: Kind of to the point where it's not a choice anymore.
If I get sick, that's just a risk we're gonna have to take.
Narrator: Some waterborne diseases, such as cholera,
can take up to five days to affect the body.
So, the risk of drinking from the waterfall is still high.
This might be a really bad idea.
[ laughs ] famous last words.
[ slurps ]
tastes pretty good. Yeah.
[ laughs ]
ahh.
I really hope we're not regretting this.
Thanks for trying it first. That was awesome.
[ chuckles ] I gotcha.
Paolo: We didn't accomplish fire yet, which sucks.
It's still a little breezy in here,
there's no two ways about that.
So, we need to get that fire going
'cause otherwise, we're just gonna shiver and shake.
Kristin: I'm cold. I woke up shivering.
Without fire, it's just gonna wind up
turning into a dangerous game of catch-up more than anything.
Kristin: All those other girls and guys
from past "naked and afraid" episodes
who complained about being cold --
dude, kudos to you guys,
because it really is freaking cold with no clothes on,
and I am taking back all the crap that I said.
It's kind of freaking me out that I'm shivering
in the middle of the day.
This is really hard.
And anybody who watches it on tv that thinks they can do it,
just tell yourself it's really hard.
You want to show them my back?
Paolo: I mean, that's just a little view of it.
I'm saying that as a fan.
It's really hard.
I think we should try to start the fire.
Yeah, that's what I was thinking, too.
Today, we are much more organized.
We have a proper setup.
We have all of our fuels in line.
We should have a pretty significantly sized fire.
Paolo: Oh, yes. Wait, wait, wait.
Once the embers start, they dissipate so quickly,
and I have no idea why.
Yes, go, go, go, go, go, go, go. Go, go.
Open up, open up.
You want some more tinder? Yeah, yeah.
[ blowing lightly ]
whoo!
All right, let's slow down for one second.
Want to put a big piece on?
No, not yet. Keep everything to the side.
Kristin: I think it was definitely a team effort,
though I might have rolled my eyes a couple times at him.
[ chuckles ]
high-five.
Yay.
We just made fire.
[ sighs ] damn, that feels good.
It's warm.
This is the first time I've really been warm
since getting here, which is amazing.
I'm gonna walk up, try and see
if I can't find maybe some lizards or something.
Okay.
Now we're in it.
Like, the game is on now.
So, I'm just kind of digging around,
hoping to find crabs coming out from underneath rocks.
Now I'm just kind of, like,
check some of the pockets, like right there.
There's one right there.
I am now in a somewhat epic battle with a crab.
[ grunts ]
yeah, he backed in there way too far.
Hold on a second.
[bleep] oh [bleep]
holy [bleep]
narrator: Away from camp without his machete,
paolo has stumbled upon
one of the most dangerous snakes in central america.
Paolo: How are you not dead yet? You just don't stop.
No, no, no, no, no.
[bleep]
[bleep] [bleep]
[bleep] that thing's long. Paolo:
That's about 3 feet long.
I didn't bring the machete.
I got to bash its head.
Otherwise, it's just gonna get away from me,
and this could be dangerous.
No, no, no, no, no.
[bleep]
[ grunts ]
son of a bitch.
Holy [bleep] this is intense.
[ groans ]
okay. Okay.
Okay.
[ sighs ]
okay.
It's over.
[ panting ] and now we have a very big portion of snake meat.
That's as long as my arm.
Kristin: What the heck? We got dinner.
Are you kidding me? That's poisonous.
Yeah, but I cut its head off.
Wait, right where we were walking?
In that area, yeah.
They're little, though. So, like...
They can still kill you.
Yeah, they can still kill you. You're right.
You know, I went off on my own,
and I happen to find a coral snake,
so I made the decision to get it.
Hey, food's food, and we need it.
You didn't even have the knife!
Yeah.
You sure it didn't bite you?
Well, that makes me feel better.
Wait, is there still poisonous stuff on that part?
No.
Kristin: I still can't believe he brought back
this huge-ass poisonous snake.
And he killed it on his own.
That was a huge, huge risk he took,
but in the long run, I mean, it worked out.
I don't want this to turn into the anaconda
that was in tanzania.
Remember?
Oh, no. They dried it out.
They couldn't even eat it.
Dude, they turn it into a rock, yeah.
That would be so upsetting.
That's why I'm super, like, careful
with this little guy right now.
You want to hold that for a second?
Hold on, let's keep it high, just 'cause it's so thin.
That's the only thing about snake -- there's no fat on it.
We've both seen on past "naked and afraid" episodes
where they burnt the snake to a crisp
and then couldn't even eat it,
so I don't really need paolo telling me how to do it.
Can't believe I'm gonna eat a poisonous snake.
It's not poisonous anymore.
Failure is my biggest fear.
We're not failing anywhere.
So, I'm not scared at all.
So, I'm just naked, not afraid.
[ laughs ]
that was in your 60-second video.
No, it wasn't. Yes, it was.
Nah. I remember that part.
It just makes sense. Okay.
[ laughs ]
paolo: You know, so far, we've been able to eat.
But it's been by luck, and I'd much rather us be able
to plan out, you know, our opportunities for meals
rather than just happen upon them.
We're gonna try to make a couple box traps today.
Hopefully get a bird or two.
Today's focused on huntin'.
[ chuckles ]
[ gasps ]
ugh.
Stupid fishing line.
Sorry, paolo.
Not a fan right now at the moment.
Hey, can you hold this? Yeah.
Guess there's more than 30 pounds of pressure on these.
Starting over.
Paolo: I brought fishing line because of all the uses
that I thought we would have for it.
Was it the best thing to use for the bird traps?
No, not really -- little bit too thin.
But for her to, you know, just, like, sit there and go,
"ugh, the fishing line sucks,"
I'm just like, "all right, then shut up and don't use it."
you know what I mean?
You're gonna try the fishing line?
Just gonna give it a roll, see what happens.
Mm-hmm.
Paolo and I have totally different ideas in our head.
He came in just wanting to hunt and kill everything.
I came in wanting to enjoy the experience.
I don't think he understands, at all, the whole idea of,
you know, just...Enjoying it.
Good morning, waterfall.
So pretty.
I love listening to the water at night.
I'm gonna have to fix my trigger.
I don't like it right now.
It's a little too easy right now.
Of all the things I think I've tried here,
so far, this bird trap might be the most difficult.
In concept, it's just straightforward --
you stack sticks under pressure.
But I'm doing something --
[bleep] wow.
This is crazy.
Kristin: We are deep in the thick of it in the jungle of nicaragua h
it's really pretty down here, and the birds are chirping.
[ birds chirping ]
the sun is going in and out.
There's a few clouds, but... It's really pretty.
Paolo: My whole thing's starting to get loose.
You can tell right there.
So, I'm just gonna start from the beginning.
It'll get done right.
[ groans ]
[bleep]
paolo: You know, unless kristin wakes up
and comes over here soon,
I'm gonna have to carry all this wood back by myself
because we need it.
It seems like her energy levels in general
and here focus is down.
And frankly, I don't want to do all that labor by myself.
This is a team effort, so it's something
that I'm probably gonna have to bring up with her pretty soon.
Kristin: It's day seven.
I guess I'm doing okay.
I'm starting to miss my family...
...A lot. [ chuckles ]
I feel as though she's having a really hard time
letting go of the idea that, you know, we're not home.
We're not, like, doing a backpacking trip,
a little camping trip.
You know, this is all very real.
Kristin: There's paolo.
He's down in the creek.
See anything good, paolo?
Here, crabby crabby crabs
did you find a big one?
Not big, but it's a crab.
Ow! Ohhh.
Show me. Let me see.
Oh, okay.
Guess who sees another crab
ooh, look at the little fella.
Aww.
Paolo: She needs to kind of get her head in the game more.
If that's gonna be her attitude for the most part,
then that means I'm gonna have to do a lot of things solo,
and if I'm gonna do a lot of things solo, then it means,
you know, things could potentially start falling apart.
I just want to make sure that, you know, like,
as we continue with this that, you know,
you keep your eyes and ears open as well to any, you know,
food that might come around.
Oh, of course. Definitely.
'cause if you're gonna stand in the middle of the river
on a rock and be like, "here, crabby crabby,"
and I'm actually in the mud, like,
scooping underneath rocks
and stuff like that trying to find them,
then it's a little bit more, like, fun for you.
It is fun.
This is, like, the awesome-est experience ever.
All right, then, in that case, like,
how about I eat all the food I catch for the next, you know,
like, six days, and then you don't.
Like, that's the point I'm making.
I just want to make sure that, you know,
we're both equally trying to put food on the table.
Yes, yes.
That's all. It's just something I wanted to say.
Good to know.
Kristin: I think our bodies are really catching up to the fact
that, like, we're not getting enough calories at all.
I thought about what paolo talked to me about,
and since he's been helping out so much
with all the, like, food stuff, like, I want to help more.
Trying to get some straight sticks so that
I can make another box trap and surprise paolo.
[ chuckles ]
paolo wants me to pull my weight around a little bit more, too,
so figure I can help.
Feel like I got the hang of it now,
and this one will work even better.
Kristin: Here, paolo. I made you a present.
Ooh. Nice.
Hopefully it catches a bird.
Oh, nice job. Looks really good.
Thanks.
It's huge. Thank you.
Oh, wow.
That spider.
Look how long his legs are.
That's massive.
How crazy is that?
That's the biggest spider I've ever seen.
He stays over there, I'll stay over there,
and I think we'll be okay. Yeah.
Whole lot of jungle for the both of us, right, buddy?
Yeah, I'm not getting near that thing.
I don't do well with spiders.
Kristin: Um, think it's day 11.
Energy is definitely running low.
I think it's really just hitting me, the lack of food,
the lack of...Everything.
If you look, like, all around here, there's --
there's little spikes that have already been eaten.
I'm hoping that the birds are what are eating these,
so I'm taking them down.
I'm gonna put them in our traps.
Hopefully, somebody gets hungry.
Paolo: See that lizard again.
The stick I had was much weaker than I thought, and it broke.
[ exhales deeply ]
just used a lot of energy... To do nothing.
And food just got away.
I'm feeling pretty low... To be honest.
Doesn't really feel like I have any fat to run off of.
So, like, my body's just using muscle and stuff.
And that means it's just starting to wear me down.
I haven't had a bowel movement in, I think, a week now.
We're basically in a starvation survival mode right now.
This is definitely towing the danger zone.
Let's do this.
[ gasps ]
[ crashes ] oh, my god.
Narrator: Selected from hundreds of online fan application,
kristin and paolo are struggling to survive
their special, 14-day challenge in the jungles of nicaragua.
Kristin began to lose focus on her survival responsibilities.
Kristin: Here, crabby crabby crabs
narrator: And paolo took a huge risk in his decision
to kill a highly poisonous coral snake armed with only a stick.
Paolo: No, no, no, no.
Narrator: Since then, they've had very little success
in securing any other significant amount of protein
and grow increasingly weaker by the day.
Their psr scores will be reevaluated
at the end of their two-week challenge if they make it.
Paolo: I haven't had a bowel movement
I could potentially put myself into a starvation coma.
Let's do this.
[ gasps ]
[ crashes ] oh, my god.
You all right?
Um...Yeah, that was weird.
What happened?
I don't know.
I just kind of lost my balance for a second.
So, you didn't black out?
I don't know. I mean, like --
you were really, like,
kind of deer in the headlights for a second there.
Yeah, no. I'm not gonna say that I wasn't.
My bad.
Just sit there for a minute.
That really freaks me out.
We're gonna be on a cliff side tomorrow.
Narrator: Less than 24 hours
from a difficult extraction journey up the mountain,
kristin and paolo have had no significant protein
since the meat of a small crab five days ago.
Right is absolutely the most fatigued that I have ever felt.
When they talk about this show and the ups and the downs,
this is a marked low point.
At this point, it's not even hunger.
I haven't felt this way the entire time we've been here.
Paolo: Holy [bleep]
check it out.
There's a bird in the trap, kristin.
Kristin: Oh, my god! Holy [bleep]
I can't believe it worked.
I'm gonna stab it in the head.
Okay.
Just get your hand on it, and then I'm gonna kill it.
There you go. Right in between my thumbs.
Right here? Yep. Down hard.
There you go. Good. Congratulations. That's huge.
It worked. Got it.
Oh, my god. This is actually a meal.
Oh!
Dude, you did so good.
That's huge.
[ chuckles ] I killed something.
Paolo: To see that she had taken initiative
and gone out of her way to better our chances of survival
in getting food into our bellies, it meant a lot to me.
We're having wings for dinner, baby.
This is our thanksgiving dinner
right before our big trek tomorrow.
Chef paolo, how's it coming along?
This is looking delicious right now.
Oh, it smells delicious.
Today's been a good day, huh?
I'm elated right now.
Mmm.
[ laughs ]
it's good.
Oh, my gosh.
Good, huh?
This is so good.
It's psychologically and physically satisfied me
in so many ways.
[ howling ]
kristin: I feel uplifted.
I feel like we can totally do this.
And we're gonna prove to america that fans have what it takes.
Hey, paolo? Yeah?
Thanks for being such a good partner.
You're welcome. It's been great.
It feels like christmas morning.
Today is extraction.
And yeah, I'm just ready for action.
Narrator: Kristin and paolo's extraction point
sits along the highest ridge of the mountain,
a gain of over 500 feet in elevation from their camp.
To reach it, they'll have to navigate
a series of severe inclines and declines
in time to meet the rescue team.
Paolo: All right, chica.
We have to go up there.
[bleep]
all the way up there.
[ sighs ]
I don't think we're gonna scale this wall.
[ laughs ]
your armpits smell so bad.
I'm trying not to get whiffs of them.
Told you, man. They're, like, potent.
Yep.
Look how high we're getting.
Wow. Wow!
Dude, we're starting to come up on that ridge.
Be careful. It goes straight down.
[bleep] yeah.
Kristin: This hike is insane.
It isn't even a hike. It's like climbing straight up.
You trip once, and you could just roll
all the way down the mountain. That's pretty scary.
Hmm. How you feeling?
I'm getting tired. Yeah.
All right.
Paolo: Kristin's energy level waned pretty quickly.
And that makes me nervous
simply because of how dangerous the hike actually is.
We have to grab onto roots.
We have to have our walking sticks.
We have to, like, inchworm up.
You want to breathe? Yeah.
Yeah, go for it.
[ burps ] sorry.
I just want to get through it.
Gonna stop at these rocks here.
Sorry I have to break so often.
Paolo: I am genuinely concerned for her safety and wellbeing.
What if I do have to carry her out of the valley?
Do I have enough energy
to physically carry a 125-pound woman?
Okay, let's do it.
[ paolo gasps ] open sky.
Oh, my god. I think we're gonna be there.
We better be.
[ laughs ] we're at the top of the ridge.
Kristin, the truck.
It's our truck!
Oh, god.
Oh, my god. Everything's tired. Hola.
Kristin: The emotions going through
like, I have to process the fact that I did it.
That's it. We're done.
I feel happy, satisfied, and accomplished, and exhausted.
We're on the top of a -- I know.
Look at how high up we are.
Dude, I'm so proud of us.
Now I can watch that show as a member of that group
and go, "I know exactly how they feel."
oh, my god. We're naked-and-afraiders now.
[ sighs ] that's it.
14 days was definitely harder
than I ever, ever would have expected.
You have to really want it.
I don't think just any person
could come out and do this at all.
Bye, nicaragua. It's been fun.
Narrator: Although limited to only 14 days in nicaragua,
paolo lost 35 pounds.
Despite early frictions, his stubborn determination
was key in getting both he and his partner through to the end.
As a result, his final psr rises from a 4.2 to a 5.1.
Significant lack of food for over two weeks
caused kristin to lose a total of 11 pounds.
Her early lack of focus was a detriment,
but her persistence and innovation
in baiting the bird trap led to
the final source of protein they needed to succeed.
Her final psr also increases from a 3.6 to a 4.4.
Together, they rose to the challenge
and proved they have what it takes to survive 14 days...
I cannot wait to see my family.
Hi.
Hi, baby girl.
[ laughs ]
[ voice breaking ] I missed you so much.
I almost feel like -- like a superhero.
[ laughs ] like, adventure-man.
Did you miss me? You did?
Aww.
I'm absolutely planning more outdoor survival adventures.
I have a couple in the works right now,
hopefully involving total world travel.
This is the best sandwich I've ever had in my life.
If the producers called me up and said, "hey, paolo,
do you want to give, you know, 21 days a shot?"
I'd be like, "yeah. Let me pack my bags."
but the beauty about this show is
I don't really have to pack anything for my bags.
Oh, I love sandwiches.
Mmm.
Mmm.
